Welcome to the final edition of the Banksia Bulletin for 2021! True to form, there’s a fair bit going on over the next few weeks as we supposedly “wind down” the year. Community events you should be aware of, and very maybe attend: Friday 3rd: Reinmakers Christmas Party Tuesday 7th: Cuppa with a Copper Wednesday 8th: Good Grub Social Club Thursday 9th: Shire Afternoon Tea (farewell CEO Graeme Fardon and welcome incoming new CEO Nicole Gibbs) Sunday 12th: Community Christmas Carols Thursday 16th: Early Morning Yoga Plus summer sports and all of the festive celebrations—it’s looking packed full of good fun. If you’re a quiet observer of community life and perhaps haven’t been to the CRC or haven’t been involved in many (or any) community events, maybe joining us for Good Grub Social Club is your prime opportunity to step slightly out of your comfort zone and get involved. It’s a very simple premise, we’re using good food to bring people together. Getting out of the house, socialising, talking to new people and eating good food are all proven to reduce social isolation and loneliness. Likewise, if you’re a fully engaged and proactive member of the community we’d love to share lunch with you too! If I’ve piqued your interest, we’d love for you to let us know you’d like to join us on Wednesday 8th December by calling, emailing or sending us a message on Facebook or Instagram. Check out the poster on page 23 too. Between valued advertisers and upcoming event flyers, the Banksia Bulletin has always relied on local people across the community submitting content and photos—and it still does. If you’re doing something cool or interesting at work, at home, in a community group or down the street, that you think others might be interested in—take a photo and write a few words about it. Send it to us, and (if relevant and appropriate) we’ll share it with the community via the Banksia Bulletin (or sometimes via the Passion Sheet or via our Facebook or Instagram). While we’d love to be roving reporters and be in all places at once, we sadly can’t always and more so, we value your unique perspectives and insights. Please be mindful that discussing information outside the surgery is a breach of privacy and confidentiality. We do not wish to lose our wonderful reception staff. Our clinical psychologist Carol Deepe will not be attending the surgery next Year. You may however continue to see her in York. MY AGED CARE - To begin the process for My Aged Care please make a double appointment with your GP. We have brochures available at the surgery to assist you with this process.
Dr Ade is filling up his appointments very quickly and in advance. Please keep this in mind when you require an appointment. With this in mind there is also a 2 day turn around for any telephone script requests.
Huge congratulations to the community of Quairading. We are 87.3% 1st Dose and 70.8% Double dosed. We are one of the highest in the Wheatbelt for our COVID vaccinations. Please call one of our friendly receptionists to book a jab if you haven’t had one yet. We will not be having any covid clinics in January. If you are due for your second vaccine please call the surgery for an appointment in February. Booster Vaccines will be administered in accordance with the government time line of who will get it and when. Please speak to your GP to see if you are eligible before making your appointment. Quairading Ladies Bowls Gala Day
Another very successful Gala Day was held on Friday 5th November with 24 teams from surrounding districts competing. The weather was absolutely perfect for an enjoyable Competition. The winner of the day was J. Treasures team from Northam with runners-up being a composite team comprising D. Hudson from Dowerin with three of our local ladies; D. Mills, J. Bloom and O. Caporn. Third place was Beverley and Bruce Rock took out fourth. Congratulations to all of these ladies. Congratulations also to our Captain Donna Hayes with the assistance of Phyllis Brown and Chris Gimbel for a very well run event. Many thanks also to the catering coordinator, Joan Bartlett, kitchen helpers, bar staff and all the members who always provide a wide range of wonderful food on the day. Turmeric Paste (Golden Paste) Here’s how the story goes - My husband and I recently visited your fine town and stayed at the caravan park and I visited your Co-op for groceries. While in the shop a very nice lady said to me “you look worried” as I was trying to find Turmeric powder. She guided me to the right area and we got talking about why I wanted more than one jar of the powder. She was interested in what I had to say and I promised to email her my recipe. Well somehow I lost these details and I have been feeling bad. Ever since. I had been thinking about contacting say your local authorities to see if someone could guide me in some way. I found this recipe on Google some years ago, it was placed by a vet whose favourite horse couldn’t walk and he found with the correct dose of this paste he was able to get his horse walking again. Our experience with the paste was Bill (husband) was told he needed a hip replacement but after taking the Golden Paste for 2 weeks his pain level fell from a level 9 to a level 2, therefore he did not have the operation. Currently his pain level is zero to a level 1. I guess everyone is different and I wish you the very best of success if you give the paste a trial. I understand turmeric is a great anti-inflammatory. Ingredients 1 ¾ cups water ½ cup turmeric powder 1/3 cup cold pressed coconut oil 2 teaspoons freshly finely ground black pepper (I grind the pepper immediately prior to use) Directions Place turmeric and 1 cup of water in a saucepan, stir over gentle heat and slowly add the balance of the water until you have a thick paste. This should take about 7-10 minutes/ Add freshly ground pepper and oil AT THE END of cooking. Stir well (I use a whisk to blend completely) Pour into a sterilised jar and refrigerate. Notes This recipe is enough for Bill and I for 12-14 days. I have 2 teaspoons of paste in a little hot water (to melt the paste) with a little milk to improve the flavour. Bill has 3 teaspoons of paste plus hot water and milk. We find the taste quite palatable. You can leave out the pepper if you cannot tolerate it. The absorption of turmeric will still be improved by the cooking of the paste and by the addition of the oil BUT remember it will be less effective without the pepper. The Golden Paste will keep for 2 weeks refrigerated. Freeze a portion if you think you have too much to use within 2 weeks. Golden Paste can also be added into smoothies or stirred into yogurt. And don’t forget your pets dinner plate or your horse etc.

We have been extremely busy this last month. We held Kids sewing classes over 3 separate weeks and they made a Zippy Hobby bag. The kids learnt how to iron, sew straight and insert a zip. It was a pleasure to teach Alex, Pia, Lachie, Skyla, Chloe, Matilda and Mia, thank you
We hosted the Avon Valley Friendship Day on Saturday 13 Nov, we had 65 ladies (give or take a few) it was fabulous to hear lots of laughter and chatter throughout the day. Thanks to the Quairading Quilters for helping with the catering. We had 3 raffles on the day which raised $378 for the RFDS, thankyou ladies for your generosity.
To celebrate another fantastic year at Loosies we are having a PARTY !!!! Gardening in the Wheatbelt Written by Carmela Kriszyk of Eaglewood Farm We have reached the end of spring and December signals the traditional move into summer but so far it really has not felt like summer is close at hand at all. The indigenous 6 seasons would call this time of the year including October and November ‘sprummer’. Hopefully the showers of the last week of November have not adversely affected any of our farmers and that the warmer weather starting soon will allow the harvest to pick up speed so that it can be finished before Christmas. The next meeting for the Quairading Garden Lovers Group is our inaugural Christmas lunch. The first meeting for 2022 will be held at the Quairading Nursery at 10am on Friday 25th February. We would like to see some new members join us next year. Please consider gardening as a hobby it is rewarding in many ways including both mental and physical stimulation and coming to our informal meetings only adds more stimulation. Remember Act, Belong, Commit! Plant of the Month – It is not often that we come across a plant which has as many pluses as this month’s plant. Lonicera spp. or the Honeysuckle vine starts flowering in mid November and continues into December and with a little irrigation will continue well into January. Flower colour varies from yellow and white to a deep pink and white. The leaves are a deep green and give a lush appearance that belies its heat and drought tolerance. With its lovely fragrance and sweet nectar it attracts bees, butterflies and birds to the garden which are great for both pollination and pest control. Honeysuckles prefer to be planted in full sun although at Eaglewood Farm the best ones thrive in afternoon shade, probably because they are only watered once per week. They are not fussy about soil type, however, it does need to be free draining. There are almost two hundred varieties of Honeysuckle available the most common being the yellow and white vine. Usually Honeysuckles are grown over arbours as they will scramble over these supports quite easily but they also can be grown as a ground cover or as an informal hedge where they are allowed to climb over themselves and happily grow to one metre in height. Along with it no fuss growing requirements Honeysuckles are also easy to propagate. They will grow from cuttings taken at this time of the year and either put into water till roots develop or struck in moist potting mix. Keep cuttings out of direct sunlight, two leaves only and keep the pot under a clear plastic bag to conserve moisture. They will also grow from layered stems which are wounded and then placed in a small trench and held there till roots develop. If your garden is small and cannot handle an over exuberant vine such as this then all you need to do is prune it once a year after it has finished flowering and it will be very well behaved for you. It’s time… Sow – One vegetable that is traditionally sown in early December is a variety of beans called Snake Bean besides this not a lot needs to be sown at this time of the year, however, if you have shade and lots of water then you may want to continue sowing seeds of summer flowering and fruiting annuals. Plant –December and January are generally too hot to plant any seedlings or plants in the garden, however as above most plants given the right conditions will grow because they really do want to grow.
Harvest – At Eaglewood Farm we have just picked the last of the blood oranges, mandarins, Eureka lemons and Loquats (although I have to admit there was only one Loquat haha) I had stripped our young tree because I wanted it to put its energy into developing an extensive root system. By the way the one fruit was very sweet. We still have Kumquats on the tree but they will be picked shortly. The Cape gooseberry vine is producing well and the broad beans and asparagus have been abundant. Our staples are still in good supply including lettuce, spinach, carrots and many herbs. Things to do – Firstly we all now need to remember to wear sun protection when out in the garden also it is easy to forget how long we’re there, so having regular drinks is also important. In December a small trim of the rose bushes will encourage another flush of flowers, roses and tomatoes should be watered at ground level and in the morning to avoid fungal diseases. A deep watering once a week is better than more frequent light waterings. It’s a good time to prune and also to take cuttings of Grevillea, Thryptomene, Lavender and Geraldton Wax, remember avoid going into leafless woody parts which won’t shoot again. Cover compost heaps and don’t let them dry out. Make sure worm farms are in the shade and kept moist. Now is the time to shade the vegetable beds. Lift lawn mower blades, mow the lawn in the morning and then water thoroughly. Avoid mowing during a hot spell. If your fruit trees are not netted now is the time to do that before the fruit starts to colour up. Water fruiting trees under the canopy to the drip line, fertilise them to help improve fruit quality. Another thing to do is have a Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. This year there will be a Christmas service on Christmas Eve at St Faith’s Church, Quairading, with a 5.30 p.m. Christmas Eucharist. Earlier in the month on Sunday, 5 th December at 9.00 a.m. the annual Children’s Christmas Service will take place. The congregation will join with all members of the Shire on Sunday, 12th December at 6.00 p.m. in the Shire Hall for Community Christmas Carols. All are most welcome at any of these special services. Prior to Christmas Day the Parish will prepare with special services during the Season of Advent which represents the beginning of the Christian Calendar. Advent is the season observed in most Christian denominations as a time of expectant waiting and preparation for both the celebration of the Nativity of Christ at Christmas and the return of Christ at the Second Coming. Practices associated with Advent include keeping an Advent calendar, lighting an Advent wreath, praying an Advent daily devotional, erecting a Christmas tree or a Chrismon tree, lighting a Christingle, or erecting a Nativity Scene. Uniting Church Coraling Street We have come to the end of the Church year, we’ve been on a ‘Pentecost’ journey - one that began way back in the middle of the year and finishes next Sunday. On that journey, we have learned about different experiences that Jesus and his disciples had, and how they affect us, and our lives. That’s why each year, we go on this long journey and hear again about God and about Jesus and about the Holy Spirit. Many of the stories we’ve heard before, but we need to hear them frequently so we remember the things God has done and is doing in our lives. This year we have heard the stories as recorded by Mark.
