FROM THE EDITOR The end is nigh! And by that I of course mean the end of yet another action packed, utterly exhausting and insanely 10 inspiring year is rapidly approaching. Which means the silly 16 season (as if the silliness is ever contained to just one 16 “season”, but hey any excuse) is rapidly approaching! In previous years we’d be producing a December Banksia Bulletin (eg, this edition) and then turning around and smashing out another “Christmas” edition. But in an attempt to work smarter not harder, and let’s be honest, to not have to whip up a Banksia Bulletin during Christmas party—hangover—Christmas party again week—we’ve simply put an end to it. If you devastatingly missed that memo and didn’t get your Christmas wishes / opening hours / notices into this Banksia Bulletin, fear not—we’ll gleefully publish them all in the weekly Passion Sheets through December. If you need some help getting into the festive spirit, join us for our Fabric Wreath Making Workshop (with brunch!) on Saturday 14th December. It’s $35 per person to cover all the supplies and will be incredibly low key with zero pressure to bring any crafty / fabricy /creative skills—the complimentary mimosas will take care of that. As we wrap up one year and prepare for the next, we’ve got our whiteboard front and centre, plotting out dates and all sorts of ideas for 2020. If you happen to have an excellent—or in fact, an ordinary—idea spring to mind for an event, activity, workshop or other that you’d like to see on offer (or better yet, you’d like to be a part of) let us know! Lastly, thank you to everyone who has shared wonderfully positive feedback and kind words off the back of our (Curtain Raisers’) epic production of Mamma Mia! I think it was gosh darn epic and it’s suitably gratifying to have our wonderful audiences agree. The generous and super fun volunteer collaboration of so many locals to make it such a success is the exact reason I continue to freakin’ love this town and our community. Bring on 2020! If you see something you like we do accept laybys. We are always in need of bed linen, curtains, tablecloths, towels and clean clothing. 2019 SENIORS WEEK COMEDY LUNCH For a little ol’ rural town, the Quairading community have been absolutely spoilt for choice when it comes to enriching cultural activities. In 2019 so far we’ve been privy to- exclusive fine dining, art classes, local theatre and not just one, but TWO stand-up comedy performances! Just to name a few, and all without the need for arduous travel. Back in July of this year the QDHS P&C Association organised a visit from a comedy troupe ‘The Motherhood’ who performed their ‘Surviving the Circus’ show. The evening was so thoroughly enjoyed that members of the senior community in attendance then came to the Quairading CRC to ask if we could aid in arranging another visit, specifically for the senior community. We were successful in receiving some grant funding under the COTA WA Seniors Week grant scheme and this, along with some in-kind contributions from the Shire of Quairading and the Quairading CRC, enabled us to hold such an affordable afternoon soiree. We were also able to gather some fantastic feedback, both written and anecdotal, for future Senior Week events (we feel a sing along may be on the horizon?) Shout out to Flavour Town Catering for providing such sumptuous savoury sustenance on the day! Laughing is an aerobic workout- FACT, it’s science! QUAIRADING SUB CENTRE Staying safe in summer With a surge in the number of Western Australians treated for snake bites in the last year, the Beverley Sub Centre wishes to highlight the importance of first aid as we head towards peak snake season. From July 2018 to June 2019, 169 people in WA were treated by paramedics for snake bites. By comparison, 104 people were treated in the 12 months to June 2018, and 120 in 2016. More than 66 per cent of cases occurred in country WA, with the Wheatbelt (31), South West (29) and Pilbara (15) topping the list. Margaret River had the highest single number of emergency calls with seven, while 57 patients were treated in and around Perth, most in the South West (14) and North West (13) metropolitan areas. Five of the world’s 10 most venomous snakes live in Australia and unfortunately there are still many myths surrounding snake bite treatment. Our message is simple, but could be lifesaving – know first aid, even it’s at a basic level. The most important thing if you’re bitten by a snake is to call triple zero (000), even if you’re unsure of the snake type. People should lie flat, remain as calm and still as possible, and then bandage the bite starting from the fingers or toes and wrapping upwards.” Common snake bite symptoms include headaches, blurred vision, nausea, drowsiness and difficulty breathing, speaking or swallowing. Downloading the St John First Responder smartphone application, which can dial triple zero (000) and provide operators with an exact GPS location, may save a life, especially in remote locations. It’s also important that if you are going walking in bush areas you take a first aid kit with you.

As part of teaching kids that swimming is a “sport for life” we are encouraging the kids as well as the adults to “Swim to Rottnest”. Every time you swim some laps in our Quairading Pool please ask Kyle for the Purple Folder. In here, you can write your name and record your laps as a running total. GARDENING IN THE WHEATBELT Written by Carmela Kriszyk of Eaglewood Farm How did your garden survive the three scorchers we had in mid November? Sudden heat spikes early in the season can severely stress plants and in some cases cause leaf burn, which is evident in my front garden where the rock wall radiating heat and the direct sun blaring down caused the fresh growth on my roses to burn to a crisp. They are recovering and it now has prompted us to find some shade cloth to drape over the wall and plants. Another factor causing plant stress are the drying easterly or northerly winds which are constant during our summers. Fortunately plants have an incredible ability to keep cool. So long as there is adequate moisture around their roots their leaves transpire to keep the plants cool. So in conclusion keep in mind the three musts 1, adequate water; 2, shade the plants and 3, shade the soil with mulch. Helping to strengthen the roots during these hot periods with a seaweed product is also a good idea. Plant of the Month – Pandorea jasminoides, commonly known as Bower of Beauty, it is a vigorous growing evergreen native climber with tubular or funnel shaped flowers. The foliage is dark green and the flowers are either white or pink with a maroon centre. Although a climber at Eaglewood farm we have it cascading over the rock wall which surrounds the main water tank at the back of our house. It has climbed over itself so that now it provides a cooling barrier for the tank on its western side. This lovely plant has flowers almost all year round and is frost hardy and extremely drought tolerant once established. Jasminoides flowers from spring through to summer and spot flowers all year. PHYSICAL EDUCATION IN TERM 4 @ QDHS Following our Athletics program last term, this term has been all about developing skills for striking sports! Students in Years 1-4 have been working with Bec Wilson to develop fundamental skills relating to throwing, catching, fielding and striking. Students in Years 5-10 have been developing sport specific skills relating to tee-ball and softball. In the spirit of Term 4 ‘striking sports’, all students also had the opportunity to participate in a cricket clinic with Daniel Gollan, Wheatbelt Cricket Development Officer, prior to students in Years 3-6 competing in the Wheatbelt Region 2019 Cricket Blast Cup. We entered two Year 3/4 teams and three Year 5/6 teams, with one of our Year 5/6 teams coming home with the 2019 WINNING SCHOOL flag!! Our students all report having a great day of cricket and I’d like to thank the teaching staff that took the kids across to Tammin for the day and all of the AMAZING parent helpers that supported us in their roles as scorers and umpires. MARY CLEMENS’ ADDRESS TO THE TH QARRAS ON 11 NOVEMBER 2019 Although it is generally believed that the first Australian Troops to serve overseas were volunteers during the Boer War in 1899, volunteers had taken part in the Maori Wars in New Zealand in the 1860’s and troops were serving in the Sudan in 1885. Also a contingent fought against the Boxer Rebellion in China, 11 years before Australia was drawn into WW1 and the legend of the Anzacs was born. From records, it appears that in WW1, 119 enlistments were recorded by the RSL from Quairading. It is not recorded how many returned to the district. It is still talked about how Alec McRae and Lawry Bryant rode their horses to Blackboy Hill to enlist in the 0th Light Horse from where they saw service at Gallipoli. West Australian Mounted Infantry formed January 1900 18th Australian Light Horse mounted Infantry formed 1905 2nd Light Horse formed 1918 10th Light Horse (A.I.F.) formed in 1914 10th Light Horse (W.A.M.I.) formed in 1918 10th Australian Light Horse Regiment, 1942 - 1948 10th Australian Light Horse Regiment (AIF) 1943 330,000 served 1943 was when the 10th Light Horse was changed to a mechanised unit and many of the enlisted men were transferred to the Army, Navy or Air Force. Colin Walker had collected 70 surnames as giving Quairading as their address for WW2. Some were accepted into the services and some were declined as they were considered ESSENTIAL SERVICES> A group of young men travelled to Northam on the tray of Nat Chandler’s truck. Ron Anderson was among them along with Bobbie Barr. They were stationed in Singapore when the Japanese invaded. Ron told me they were walking through the jungle with him leading and he turned to talk to Bobbie and he just wasn’t there – he disappeared without a sound or any trace. Ron was captured and spent three months in Changi prison before being transferred to work on the Burma Railway and the River Kwai Bridge from May 1942 to 1946. (From Certificate of Discharge). Twenty hours a day with very little food. All the time I was working with Ron on his experiences, the only time he became emotional was when he recounted how they had a baby elephant that died from the mistreatment he received at the hands of the Japanese guards. When I approached Ron’s family for permission to interview him, I was told “Go ahead but he won’t tell you anything”. Boy oh boy, were they wrong!! The recollections came out so fast that I was very lucky to be using a recorder. Earlier, I recounted the war mainly from the perspective of the forces. Now, let us recall what was happening at home. Rationing was in full force with everything restricted. Butter, sugar, jam and tinned fruits were in very short supply, even if you had the necessary coupons. Cigarettes and tobacco, although not rationed, were very hard to obtain. Sugar, being on the list of rationed goods, sweets and lollies were in very short supply. We were lucky in that our father had an old school friend who had a PAGE 50

confectionary factory and could occasionally gave him some sugar and Dad would make toffee which meant another saucepan with a burnt out bottom! Farmers were fortunate in that they could kill their own meat but this also had the balance that that was an animal unavailable for sale. Petrol rationing was very meagre and supplies of coupons available from the Shire, administered by Jack Keast were extremely meagre – it was often remarked that you would think it was his blood that was wanted! Personally, our family suffered as previously, Mum had driven us to school – picking up Noel Shenton on the way. Grandpa Bryant converted the tray of an old ute into a horse drawn cart which was covered with a canvas cover, a la a covered wagon. An old white pony was purchased to pull the cart and this was our conveyance to school (North Quairading University).Noel elected to resurrect an old pushbike. Snowball, the horse, spent the day in a yard erected from saplings on the reserve by the school. We had to carry water in buckets from Mr Jim Barr’s dam to the horse yard which was very annoying when he indulged in his favourite habit of knocking the buckets over. I remember in winter, breaking the ice on the water trough to allow Snowball to have a drink before leaving fr school. Everything was in short supply. Occasionally, Mr Hewitt would obtain such luxuries as jam, tinned fruit or sweets which he portioned out to customers. On her side in the Drapery, Mrs Hewitt faced similar problems with coupons and shortages of all supplies. Sometimes, knitting wool would could be available from the Red Cross through Mrs Shenton to knit scarves, socks and balaclavas for soldiers. After WW1, many small farms were allotted to ex-service men. One in our district was an aboriginal ex-service man and his sons were serving in the Desert Campaign in WW2. One night, word was passed around if you saw the sisters, to tell them there was a message at the Post Office – a postal message was usually bad news, so there was much relief and celebration when it was revealed the message was to say, they are well and on their way home. When an issue of an English magazine was unavailable, everyone knew that it had been cargo on a ship that had not completed its voyage. With so many men away in the services, senior men, women and children had to carry out all the farming operations, although many servicemen were granted leave to complete special commitments such as seeding, shearing and harvest and of course, neighbours always co-operated. Land girls were allocated on some farms. I cannot recall any girls doing the actual shearing although they were engaged in shed handing and other yard work. Many drove tractors and trucks during seeding and harvest. Remember, at this time bags were still in vogue – bulk did not take off until later. Amusement consisted of dances, concerts and films provided by Baker’s Talkies. The music for the dances was provided by Elaine Chandler playing the piano and Bill Fisher on the drums. Knox Thompson on piano and another South Caroling gent on drums took a turn. For big occasions, an orchestra from York would be engaged. The ladies always provided a good supper to sustain the dancers. Much money was raised to support the Comfort Fund and the Red Cross. (*not fact checked).

CHICKEN CHERRY & ALMOND SALAD Recipes courtesy of delicious.com.au INGREDIENTS
200ml sour cream 1 teaspoon honey 1 tablespoon mild curry paste (such as Korma) Juice of 1/2 a lemon 1 large barbeque chicken, meat shredded (or 2 x 450g packets of smoked chicken breast fillets, shredded) 150g watercress sprigs 1 cup of mint leaves 350g cherries, pitted. 6 spring onions thinly sliced 1 cup of toasted almonds
METHOD So easy there are literally 2 steps! Step 1: Combine the sour cream, honey, curry paste and lemon juice in a bowl and season. If the dressing is too thick you can thin it down with 2-3 tablespoons of water. Step 2: Toss the chicken, watercress, mint, cherries, spring onion and almonds together, divide among plates and drizzle with the dressing.
Note—there is A LOT of room for improve/substitution with this salad depending on what is available. The hero of the dish are the Cherries and the balance of the flavours. You’ll achieve the same desired result so long as you retain that balance i.e. arugula, radicchio, finely shredded red cabbage or some other peppery green will work in place of watercress. You can substitute the sour cream for Greek or natural yoghurt, which will give you a thinner dressing. You can also use basically any toasted but or even pepitas, pine nuts or sunflower kernels.
YOGHURT PANNA COTTA WITH CHERRY SAUCE INGREDIENTS 1 vanilla bean, split, seeds scraped 1 1/2 cups (375ml) thickened cream 185g caster sugar 2 titanium-strength gelatine leaves 500g thick Greek-style yoghurt 400g cherries, pitted ,sliced, plus extra whole cherries to serve Biscotti or similar to serve with.
METHOD Step 1: Place vanilla pod and seeds, cream and 1/2 cup (110g) sugar in saucepan over medium heat, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Bring to just below boiling point, then remove from heat and stand for 5 minutes to infuse Step 2: Soak the gelatine in cold water for 5 minutes to soften. Remove vanilla pod from the cream mixture and discard, then squeeze excess water from gelatine and whisk gelatine into warm cream mixture, stirring until dissolved. Whisk in yoghurt, then strain mixture through a fine sieve. Divide among four 1-cup (250ml) moulds, cover with plastic wrap and chill for 3 hours or until just set Step 3: Meanwhile, combine the remaining 1/3 cup (75g) sugar with 1/4 cup (60ml) water in a saucepan. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Add sliced cherries and remove from heat. Allow to cool completely. Step 4: Dip the base of the moulds in hot water for a few seconds to loosen, then invert panna cottas onto serving plates and drizzle over cherry sauce. Serve with extra cherries and almond bread.

UNITING CHURCH Coraling Street THE GIFT OF CHRISTMAS A Minister visiting an elderly lady, was asked if he could get a box of letters from her dresser. In doing so he noticed a beautiful quilt hidden in a draw. She said he could take it out and it was a master piece, he was told that it was made by her Grandmother many years ago for a wedding present. When asked why she did not put it on her bed, she said, "Oh it’s to beautiful to use". The minister thought how sad that such a beautiful thing should be hidden in a draw where no one could see it. At Christmas God gave His Son, "What a beautiful gift." How sad that it can be lost and hidden in the material things of the season. WARRIOR WELLBEING Don’t spend too much time looking in the rear-view mirror When learning to drive we’re constantly reminded about the importance of checking our rear-view mirror, not just when reversing or changing lanes but for general awareness of our surroundings and enhancing our peripheral vision. However, spending too much time looking in the rear-view mirror can be hazardous as it distracts us from what’s happening in front of us and may delay our ability to avoid an accident.

The first Sunday in November saw the Mick Laycock Tournament played out at Wamenusking by a good, strong field of players. QUAIRADING LADIES BOWLS GALA DAY
Another very successful Gala Day was held on Friday 1st November with 24 teams from surrounding districts competing, including Quairading teams. Weather conditions were not very kind to us, with strong winds a few showers of rain, but this didn’t stop the ladies from enjoying their bowls. The winner of the day was B. Davidson’s team from Kukerin and the Runner up was K. Cochrane’s team from Yealering. Congratulations to these ladies. Congratulations to Dale Wilson and Christine Gimbel in the Captain’s Office on such a well run event. Many thanks to the catering coordinator, Joan Bartlett, kitchen helpers, bar staff and all members who provided food on the day, we had many comments on the delicious lunch and afternoon tea. This event could not have been held without the very generous support of our many sponsors which was very much appreciated. Please remember to give your support to them in return whenever possible.
