Hello end of year. Hello festive days and nights. Hello spending quality time with friends and family. Hello playing board games with friends and family. Hello beating said friends and families at said board games. Hello being really modest about it. Hello friends and family not wanting to play games with you anymore. Lucky Christmas is only once a year. Thank you Quairading for a ripper year. I think our community has brought the end of year home strong and after a little bit of R&R through January we’ll be firing on all cylinders to welcome in the new year, come February. We’ll be closing our doors for two whole weeks, we hope you don’t miss us too much. The next Passion Sheet will be produced on Thursday 10th January and the next Banksia Bulletin will be the March 2019 edition, deadline will be Tuesday 26th February at 12pm. Pencil in Saturday 9th Feb for a Quiz Night, and then go over it in pen because this is a night out you definitely want to be a part of! Swap out games of cards and luck for the likes of Trivial Pursuit over Christmas and summer holidays and take note of which friends and family members are actually going to bring something to the table come quiz time. When you’ve assembled your ATeam (or even before you do) contact us at the Quairading CRC and register. More info on page 23. If Christmas ain’t your jam, I hope you get to spend some time over the next few weeks with loved ones—human or otherwise—celebrating something, anything! Public holidays, great laundry drying weather, nailing another year, surviving another year, tennis and cricket on television, the end of tennis and cricket on television. Treat yo’ self and look after yo’ self. See you in 2019. WERE YOU INSPIRED BY KATE, THE QUAIRADING SHOP LOCAL CHRISTMAS ELF?
F
or a shop local campaign—and let’s be real, for a bit of a laugh—the Quairading CRC and Quairading Rainmakers Inc teamed up this month to produce a video, starring “Kate, the Quairading Shop Local Christmas Elf”. Elf? Yeah, we’re going with Elf. The video, posted to Facebook by both the @QuairadingCRC and @QuairadingRainmakers has been viewed a combined total of over 5000 times—and only like, 1000 of them were by us. We visited all of the “main street” retailers in town— which we do acknowledge are only a portion of our local businesses—to spruik gift ideas for young and old this festive season. The video is stuffed full of puns, giggles and possibly even a few local stores you’ve never stepped foot in. Huge thanks to Kate Walker, the freshest talent in town plus Tarnya Fraser, Jaylene George and Tamara Spark for their help in bringing the video together. The shop local message is one we like to highlight all year round, but especially at this time of year when we tend to be spending a bit more of our hard earned cash. When it comes to Christmas present shopping, it can sound like a fun idea to jump in the car and smash out a full day in a city shopping centre—but between the queues, the sore feet and the temperatures in the car parks, I’m yet
to hear of a person who has actually been successful AND enjoyed doing that. Likewise online shopping sounds attractive—I’ve admitted many times before that I’m a massive fan of punching in my debit card details in exchange for speciality goods to be delivered to my desk. But factor in postage costs, delivery times and just not being able to touch and feel certain products, it’s always a gamble and it too has its pitfalls. Just shopping local won’t guarantee you get everything on your list in one go, but if you do get a little bit organised and spend a little bit of time checking out how much actually is on offer from our local businesses, I do guarantee you’ll be surprised. Truly supporting our local businesses goes beyond buying a few presents here and there. These locally owned and run businesses, who employ our local friends and families, need our support all year round. By no means are our businesses entitled to our blind custom. But keep in mind that with your constructive customer feedback—shared through the appropriate channels—we all play an important role in ensuring our local businesses can continue to provide goods and services that meet the changing needs of our community. LOOSE STITCHES FAN Another story about Loose Stitches. I have finished my very, very large quilt. Even Sam said it was large. CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT From the Quairading CRC 17/18 Annual Report
I
t gives me great pleasure to present our 17/18 Annual Report for your perusal, after both a challenging and rewarding year. In August 2017 the first budget of the McGowan government showed a 38.5% cut to the CRC program from 1/7/19 in the forward estimates. This came after our newly awarded 3 year contracts were cut to 18 months with an option (for the government) to extend a further 15 months, after the findings of a review into the function and location of the CRC program. Much water has passed under the bridge since then with our community showing great support of our CRC, the CRC Network gaining a stronger identity and an improved appreciation at all levels of government of the important role of place based, grass root, community led organisations in creating strong local communities. I’d like to acknowledge the unwaivering support of our CRC staff, committee, community and clients along with the Shire of Quairading, Wheatbelt Business Network, Linkwest, DPIRD staff and other entities during this uncertain time. Despite the unrest, our CRC team carried on in their usual professional, considered manner and continued to deliver quality events, activities, workshops and support to our community and businesses, as well as being involved in training and collaboration themselves. Without bias, I can confidently say that our CRC and CRC team is highly regarded across the district, network and beyond.

A fresh pair of eyes overlooking our still new-ish change to Xero has been very beneficial, with a few tweaks to the system and this year’s financial audit finding very few issues. Our annual lock-in day for staff and committee continues to be very worthwhile, providing the opportunity for brain storming, planning, reviewing, discussing and sharing. The nurturing of relationships with stakeholders, partners and clients along with the willingness to go the extra mile by our team (capably led by our coordinator Jill) when it comes to providing a high level of service, including quality catering, never ceases to amaze me. Thank you all for continually caring and striving. It is of benefit to not only our CRC, but also our ‘backyard’ we call Quairading. Going forward I believe our challenges include ensuring that we do not assume knowledge of us and what we do and grasping opportunities for alternative revenue streams, both of which will ensure our ongoing value and sustainability. Next year we turn 21 – a milestone certainly worth celebrating. Loose Stitches ‘Twas the night before Christmas and the quilts were not made, the threads are all tangled, the cookies delayed. The stockings weren’t hung, the pantry bare. The poor Weary quilter, was tearing her hair. Stacks of fat quarters, tipped over in streams. Visions of Log Cabins, had turned into dreams. When what to her wondering eyes should appear, but a bus full of quilters with all of their gear. They went straight to work with just a few mutters, sorting and stitching and brandishing cutters. The patterns emerged from all of the clutter, like magic the fabrics arranged in a flutter. Log Cabins, Lone Stars, Flying Geese & Bear Tracks each quilt was a beauty, even the backs. Her house how it twinkled, her quilts how they glowed, the cookies were baking, the stockings were sewed. Their work was all done, so they folded their frames, and packed up their needles, without giving their names. They boarded the bus and checked the next address. More quilts to be made, another quilter in distress. She heard one voice echo, as they drove out of sight, Happy Quilting to all and to all good night. QUAIRADING COMMUNITY PARK Progress update! Talk of a playground in town has been on the agenda for several years now but have you ever thought of how many moving pieces it takes to build one?! I have at least nine different folders full of brochures and booklets and ideas. Thanks to everyone who filled in the online survey back in May 2018. From the interested respondents, a Focus Group of approximately 20 community members met in June provided initial ideas and direction for the project. There’s been additional consultation with Murphy Street and Little Joey’s Playgroups and students at Quairading District High School to develop our list of preferred play equipment to cater for different ages and stages. All of this has helped me to develop the draft concept and design as pictured below. The proposed site for the playground is on the north side of Parker Street between the CRC and Vintage Club. The recreation area will then extend south to include the Reserve towards Harris and MacDonald Streets. The wish list of included items includes: 1. Solid roof picnic shelter with double plate electric BBQ, picnic tables and lighting 2. Ablution block with universal access, hand basin, lighting and baby change table 3. Large lawn area and attractive yet hardy landscape plantings 4. Play equipment including a flying fox, 6m climbing tower, outdoor trampoline, basket swings and junior swings, sand play fort, water play area as well as a tunnel and slide. We will also include a climbing rock with proceeds from the upcoming CRC Back to School Quiz Night (thanks CRC!) 5. Playground mulch is proposed as the non-compacting soft fall medium with concrete to provide allweather access from the carpark across to the toilet block. 6. Mountain bike pump track with challenging jumps and bumps to cycle around 7. Some sheltered seating and walk trails around the Town Dam and Wildlife Reserve I, along with our Works Manager Allan Rourke and Head Gardener Steve Thomas have been working hard to gather all the suppliers and costings together for Council to consider and endorse the final concept at their next meeting. This will then form the basis of developing external funding applications (4-month assessment timeframe) and inform the Shire’s 2019/20 Budget process. Final design depends on the budget we have available but we are aiming to begin construction by July 2019. We’ll be calling on our community to roll up their sleeves and get involved with a busy-bee or two at some point—stay tuned! Sarah Caporn, Project Leader

February 2019 An Open Morning and a First Aid Course! Firstly, thank you to those who attended our ‘Open Morning’ on 5 th December. We hope that you enjoyed Janet’s presentation on what to do in the event of a snake bite. If you were unable to attend, we hope that you find the First Aid Snake Bite Fact Sheet overleaf to be of interest. Our next Open Morning will be held on Wednesday 6 th February 2019. As the planning process for this day is still in progress, we will advise planned presentation for this day through the Passion Sheet during December and January. LOOK OUT FOR SSSSSNAKES! Snakes are on the move and will be looking for food and warmth from their winter hiding spots. Snakes generally avoid humans if they can but people should take some basic precautions especially if they are involved in activities that may increase their chances of an encounter with snakes. WA SENIORS WEEK 2018: SPRING HIGH TEA
I
n celebration of Seniors Week the Quairading CRC held a first-rate, fancy afternoon High Tea back in November this year. It really was a great afternoon by all accounts, attended well by our wise and treasured senior community members. Our local police officers John & Deb were our guest speakers; they guided an interactive and crowd-pleasing Q & A session. Our local choir, Bel Canto, led some delightful sing-a-longs and the Quairading CRC staff and committee got busy in their kitchens and whipped up all of the gourmet finger foods that were so regally displayed on the elegant high tea ware supplied by NovelTea. I cannot stress enough how appreciative the Quairading CRC is to all of the people that contributed to the smooth running of the day, as well as to the fineness of the dĂŠcor and arrangements. Thank you again to all of the following people: Sergeant John Hancock & Senior Constable Deb Andrews, Mel Point-et and Sandy Briggs for helping with set up and pack down, Bel Canto Choir, Quairading Creative Arts Society & Quairading Gym for graciously sharing the Arts Space with us, Shire of Quairading for letting us cut roses from the Town Hall Gardens, QARRAS for lending and setting up their PA system and most of all thank you to everyone that came along and further brightened the event in their spring attire. The mammoth load of fine china and crystal that had to be hand washed and carefully repacked the next day was all totally worth it! MY WORK EXPERIENCE AT THE QUAIRADING CRC Written by Jaylene George
F
rom the 3rd to the 7th of December 2018 I have been doing my work experience here at the Quairading CRC, it has been a different experience. At most of the time I was at the front desk with Tamara. Tamara showed me how she runs the front desk, and what she does every day at the CRC. On my first day I didn’t know what to expect, I got dropped off by my mum just before 9 o’clock. When I stepped in the door, Tamara showed me what to do in the mornings, like open the doors and the curtains in all the rooms. Tamara explained how to work the computer out the front desk and where every thing is, so when a customer comes in and they want a phone book, a calendar or even just want something printed, she showed me how to do it. Because it was quiet she asked me if I wanted to make some phone books, I said “sure”, so when the paper finished printing all the pages for the phone book, we went in the little room right behind the front desk. She told me how much paper goes in each book, and how they make the book. I got though half then I had a lunch break, when I got back I started to finish the rest of the books. It took me about 30-35 minute to finish, then I had to cut off the rough edges with this big cutting machine called a guillotine. Just as I finished cutting all the rough edges off the phone books, it turned 3 o’clock and that is when I finish. Tamara said “it time that you finish so you can go” and I went.

We worked on the Passion Sheet until 10:30am because the dead line for the information to come in is 10am, so we had to type what they emailed into the Passion Sheet.

MY YEAR WITHOUT CLOTHES SHOPPING Written by Tamara Spark
S
ome of you may recall way back in the first edition of the Banksia Bulletin for 2018 I pledged to abstain from shopping for one year, well by the time this goes to print I will have but 12 days more to endure of my self-imposed ban.
All of this and I still managed an overseas holiday and bought a new car. I think there is room for further tightening but overall I’m content with the results.
I absolutely intend to keep my material purchases in check going into 2019 and have I’ll get right to it and start off by admitting my set a big travel goal for 2020 to further slips…I may have bought a few pairs of shoes, motivate me to stay on the straight and a few hand bags and a couple of hats while on narrow… BUT come January 1, 2019 there will holiday overseas BUT if you look a little closer be a celebratory shopping break to this fashion at the fine print of the iron clad imaginary fast! Now though, as I near the finish line and reflect on my year of retail restriction, I’m aware that I no longer have any credit card debt, I’ve made a significant dent on a lingering personal loan, and I am sort of, kind of, almost sticking to a proper budget. WARRIOR WELLBEING Sun Safety…looking after your skin! Us West Aussies love nothing more than getting outdoors and enjoying the abundance of sunshine that lathers our great state. A small amount of incidental exposure to sunlight, around a few minutes each day, is actually important for maintaining adequate levels of Vitamin D needed for strong bones, muscles and overall good health. Too much exposure however, places us at great risk of damage from Ultra Violet ‘UV’ radiation which potentially could lead to the development of skin cancer. We need to get the balance right!
