FESTIVAL OF Q FUN! Our local Quairading District High School has celebrated a well attended start to a new school year with a fun-filled festival of Q! Held in week two, enrolled students were treated to a couple of days of water sliding, face painting, sausage sizzling and more. Oh hey it’s me again. Twice in one month, you lucky things! Don’t worry, I won’t make a habit of it. You just get one dose a month from here on out, in the last week of each month. That’s until I go on holidays / AWOL again and stuff the whole schedule. You’re a resilient bunch though, you'll manage. I’m typing with toes and ankles crossed that we maintain power for long enough to get this column finished, and a few hundred Banksia Bulletins printed. Sure, typing with my fingers crossed would be more lucky, but it just would not be efficient, or accurate. Kudos to everyone for soldiering on through the waves of power outages, even you smug generator-owners! I hope you’re embracing the opportunity for a digital detox, reconnecting with friends and family over a good old fashioned game of cards, reading a book by torchlight and no-cook picnic dinners! Most importantly, I hope you’re supporting each other through what admittedly is, a pretty annoying period of time. Remember, life is 10% what happens and 90% how you react to it. Another bright side for you: y’all are entitled to claim $80 each time the power is out for over 12 hours. Yahoo!! QUAIRADING LCDC SUBSIDIES The LCDC will again be providing subsidies for Lime and Gypsum and for Saltbush and Tree planting this year. The rates are $5 per tonne for lime and gypsum up to $1000 and $0.20 per plant for Saltbush and Tree planting up to $1000. Welcome back to a new year everyone, we hope you all had an enjoyable break with family and friends over the Christmas / Holiday period. Quairading Medical Practice have had quite a few staff changes of late. We welcome Dr Desire Tshibumbu, (pronounced DEZ-a-ray) & Ms Chloe Jones – Practice Nurse. Dr Desire will be our long standing General Practitioner with Dr Ade attending one day a week. Some of you will recall having seen Chloe on the reception desk quite a few years ago. Chloe has followed her dreams and has since qualified as a Registered Nurse, congratulations Chloe. Jess & Chloe will share the Practice Nurse role, week about. Sadly Tarryn tendered her resignation late last year. Tarryn was a dedicated and extremely pleasant staff member to have in our team. Her knowledge & friendly smile will be extremely missed but we wish her all the very best in the next chapter of her life. For the month of March we will be hosting another student doctor, Connor Blackmore. Reception staff will obtain your consent for his presence in your consultation with Dr Desire, please remember you are under no obligation to have Connor present. We sincerely hope he enjoys his time in Quairading. Hydration & Blood Collections - Fasting & Non- Fasting It is advised that it is better to drink plenty of water prior to your test as it makes it easier for our Practice Nursing staff to collect blood from your veins. Even for those tests that are “Fasting” we recommend that you drink as much water during this time as you can. You are also able to take any medication you would normally take in the morning, unless advised otherwise by your doctor. In short, the Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a respiratory illness caused by a new virus. Symptoms range from a mild cough to pneumonia. Some people recover easily, others may get very sick very quickly. There is evidence that it spreads from person to person. Good hygiene can prevent infection.

Loose Stitches Ohhhh, it is sooooo good to be back at Loosies! We have had a great break and we’re raring to go. We have some exciting new projects, a fun BOM (which we have sold out of the kits but you could still make it up from your stash) and our monthly get togethers. Remember you don’t have to wait for the get togethers; you can come on any of the days we are open, Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays from 9am to 4pm. Tammy from Pots & Tangles visited us on Saturday 22nd February to hold a workshop and teach the finer art of Macramé. What a hoot this was, with enough food to get the energy levels up and a little champagne to make us relaxed, we knotted our way to produce a beautiful wall hanging - there are some very talented knotters amongst us. Thanks to everyone who participated and to Tammy for her fabulous instructions and inspiration.
With all these power outages recently, we hope you are able to get some sewing done! Loosies is hosting the Avon Valley Quilters friendship day on Saturday 28th March so we will be open from 9am to 2pm.

HUMANS OF THE WHEATBELT
Hearing stories and taking a photograph of our humans. Our focus is on disabled people interviewing people, including non-disabled people, in community settings. This is a Wheatbelt Health Network project. I grew up in Quairading and went to school here until the end of Year 8, before our family moved to Busselton. I attended Busselton Senior High School and I later spent two years up in Broome working as a mechanic. My memories of growing up are of working hard and having fun. I always enjoyed doing sheep work and helping on the farm. Growing up here, you knew everyone and you could just relax. Altogether I was away from Quairading for eight years. I’m not a fan of Perth; one of my happiest memories is of driving up Greenmount Hill! When I came back to live here, I worked for a few years on a farm and then bought the local tyre shop, which I’ve been running for three years now. I love the space here and the people are nice. I had wanted to add another string to my bow and the tyre shop had been on the market for a while, so I went for it. I believe we need a tyre shop here in Quairading. The local Shire have been good to us in supporting local businesses. They’re also motivated in trying to support community initiatives. They are looking at some building projects and trying to stimulate tourism here. The local Community Resource Centre do an amazing job in printing out maps for local businesses to display too.

PRIMARIES QUAIRADING
wins Western Australia CRT Community Member of the Year Award!
CRT member Primaries Quairading has taken out the Western Australia Community Member of the Year Award, announced at the CRT National Conference in Brisbane on Saturday. The annual awards held extra weight this year, as CRT, one of Australia’s leading rural merchandise retailers celebrates 50 years of operation. CRT recognises the important role of its member stores in supporting their local communities, whether it’s through supporting rural fire services, local ambulance volunteers, meals on wheels, schools, hospitals, Men’s Shed and charity organisations. Like a lot of small, regional towns, Quairading relies on local volunteers to provide much needed health care for the local community. Primaries Quairading have two volunteers from the branch who can render first aid and transport patients to hospitals and are contributors to the welfare of locals. In addition, the staff will also attend local sporting events to provide medical attention where required.
CRT Western Australia State Manager, Peter Burchell said Primaries Quairading had been recognised for their upstanding commitment to supporting their region. “This store has demonstrated why they are so highly respected within the network and the community they service, I couldn’t think of more deserving winners,” he said. Branch Manager Trevor Sandercock, at Primaries Quairading said he and the team were enormously proud to have won this award. “CRT put a lot of emphasis on supporting local communities, so to have won this award on behalf of our staff and customers is a huge honour.” CRT General Manager Greg O’Neil praised the culture of Primaries Quairading for the work they have done in the community and said they fully deserved to win this award. “The culture of the business has made them not only successful, but a valued member of their community, working alongside their customers in all their endeavours. Such high levels of community engagement are exactly what it means to be a CRT member.” PAGE 23

QUAIRADING AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY 2019 President’s Report
There has been a good roll-up to all committee meetings this year with the usual suspects taking on their long familiar roles. Jill Hayes introduced two new committee members, Kate Walker and Tamara Spark. Kate and Tamara worked closely with Jill to organise the show day entertainment and Lifestyle Pavilion stall holders and Fashion Stylist. Jill continued in the role of Secretary, including completing funding applications, and I thank her personally and on everyone’s behalf for a job very well done – again! Jo Hayes took on the role of Treasurer this year and provided clear and concise budget forecasts and monthly bank statements. Apart from looking after the monthly reports, Jo collected the cash, paid the bills and administered the cash floats and EFTPOS of show day. Jo also coordinated the grant funding application for the Federal Governments “Regional Agricultural Show Development Grants Program”. Jo also wrote much of the application. We applied for approx. $87K. Very grateful thanks to Jo for an excellent job throughout the year. Steve and his band of volunteers ran a great “Dad’s Bar”, making good cash flow while maintaining a safe and enjoyable atmosphere. This year, the committee added security and high fencing to the licensed area, noting compliance with license conditions is being closely monitored by the local
police, with whom we have a good relationship. While the fence detracted a bit from the atmosphere of the Quick Shear, it served its purpose well. Scott and his crew manned the gate, Helen, John, Geoff, Janet and others looked after the Ag Hall while Roger and Geoff directed the food vendors, side-shows and on-ground displays to their general location. Helen Fraser and Wendy Honey looked after the chooks while Chandie again stepped up to organise the Horse Breed Show. The Breed Show entry numbers improved again this year, having 12 entrants in the various categories. Once again, Grant Mills took care of the sheep and Greg Hayes the wool. Stacey Harris looked after the young show-goers with the help of Wayne and the Animal Education Centre and a display of miniature goats, which were very popular. Noel Stone, and the Bowmen of Wamenusking, put on an archery display and provided coaching and tips for budding archers. Andrew Caporn and the Vintage Club blokes took us down “machinery memory lane”.

Jo Clews put on a “camp cooking” demo adjacent the caravans which was very well attended with great feedback from the audience. Geoff Stone, show bag coordinator, had this year’s show off and handed the show bags to Matthew and Justine Whyte. They did a great job of providing, packaging and selling the show bags, along with their show-day helpers.
All in all, it was a good day, well patronised by the community and supported by sponsors Wheatbelt Aboriginal Health, CSBP, CBH, Lotteries West plus local sponsors Fraser Farming, Quairading Seed Cleaners, Wamenusking Dorpers and WA Sandalwood.
2019 Quairading Agricultural Society Show The ninety-ninth annual Quairading Ag Show was held on October 12 at the Quairading Greater Sports Ground in perfect weather for both indoor and outdoor entertainment. The preparation for the show began with the first committee meeting in the new year. The aim of the Quairading Show is to provide friendly competition and entertainment for the whole community and all family members. The Agricultural Hall was again decked out with exhibitions of local produce, art, sewing and quilting, photography, cake decorating, vegetables and floral arrangements. The walls of the Ag Hall were covered with the entries from the Quairading Primary School and Quairading District High School students. It was great to see such a wide variety of the work skilfully produced by the juniors. The Quairading Ag Society encourages and supports the junior entrants and acknowledges their great work during the prize winner’s presentations. Activities on the day included several side show rides and events for the young people including Snow to U, Hungry Hippo Chow Down, Wipe-out Bouncy Castle, Super Trooper, Kids Tent with face painting and sand-pit, an Animal Education Display and miniature goats. For the older participants there were sheep and wool displays, horse breed show, vintage race car display, vintage machinery and tractor display, caravan display, camp cooking display, chook show, and two machinery dealerships. The lifestyle pavilion was open for business with various items on display and for sale. The local ambos and bush fire brigades displayed their fire trucks and equipment along with Eddy Duffy, local senior constable, putting on a police service display. As has been the case in recent times, the Quairading Quick Shear Competition filled the evening and was well patronised by shearers competing for $9,000.00 in prize money. Noel Stone presented the “World Record Certificate” to Lou Brown, a shearer from Kojonup, for shearing 497 ewes in 8 hours. The presentation at Quairading was Lou’s choice. His achieving the world record and appearance at the Quick Shear was widely applauded.
There are many local businesses and families who generously provide prizes for section winners in the exhibition hall and I thank them also. 2019 Show Review Tuesday 22 October, was selected as the date for the show review discussion and a sausage sizzle for those who met at the Ag Hall on that evening. Discussion covered off many aspects of the show day, including the successes i.e. Dad’s Bar, and the opportunities for improvement, i.e. the road-side signage. All of the raised discussion points will be covered off in greater detail at the coming committee meetings. Planning is under way for the 100th show next year with the Centenary Committee formed some months ago and meeting regularly. Ideas and suggestions from the review will be incorporated, where appropriate, into the centenary plans. 2019 Summary I note that gate numbers were down this year along with shearer numbers reduced for the Quick Shear. Some exhibition hall section entries were down also. Volunteer numbers were down, increasing the workload on those who did attend for set-up and pack-up. All members are encouraged to “bring a friend” along to make the coming year a huge success. A greater publicity campaign, including GWN TV advertising will be undertaken for the Centenary Show. I would like to thank the committee, members, volunteers and sponsors who generously give up their time to support the Agricultural Society in providing this very worthwhile annual event for the community and districts of Quairading. Special thanks also to the ladies who organised and supplied the morning teas for the set-up and pack up days. Eastern Districts Rural Ambassador Competition Three entrants from Eastern Districts Ag Societies competed in this year’s Rural Ambassador event. Quairading was very capably represented by Fraser Hinchliffe who did a great job. Thank you Fraser. Every good swim team name has a story… Local Quairading lads Scott Walker, Mitch Davies, Matt Richards and ndtheir great mate Bradie (Worm) Yeomans took on the South 32 Rottnest Channel Swim on 22 February 2020. Their support crew included boat owner Wayne Davies and first mate Bill Walker along with paddlers Sean Hayes and James Leeming. Another local lad, Andrew Walker also competed in the swim with another team. Beautiful day out on the water, very chaotic with so many people around though! Really couldn’t have done anywhere near as good without our awesome crew especially Wayne, plus the kayakers both did a great job in setting the pace and the path. After a few issues from the start the boys were sitting third last, but with a solid effort from them all as well as the deft boat work by experienced Rotto Swim skipper Wayne, they managed a respectable 259 out of 359 teams in a time of 7.39.09 at an average pace of 23.12 min/km. Top effort team!!

QUAIRADING BLUE TREE PROJECT

The idea behind trees being painted blue is, it’s a creative advertisement to the public to break through the barrier and say “IT’S OK NOT TO BE OK” and to start up a conversation about your mental health.

WHAT IS THE BLUE TREE PROJECT?
Our mission is to help spark difficult conversations and encourage people to speak up when battling mental health concerns. By spreading the paint and spreading the message that "it’s OK to not be OK", we can help break down the stigma that’s still largely attached to mental health.
The story of the 'Original Blue Tree' retold... We opened the first bucket. The dried white paint clung to the lid and covered the walls of the bucket. A brush was stuck in the concrete-like mass. Next bucket, same thing: dried, hardened white paint. However, when I picked up the next bucket I could feel it sloshing. You took one of the nearby screwdrivers and pried off the paint-glued lid. It lay before us: a deep blue, flowing sea of colour, smoothly sending waves against the sides of the bucket as it moved in your hand. The paint tins were some of the few things your dad wanted to throw away, much to our disagreement. And so, we decided that if he did not want to use the paint, we would save it from drying out. What did we want to do with it? Luckily, we still had a few hours of work ahead of us and by the evening we had the crazy idea that made us both smile when thinking of it. We would drive around the farm and pick a tree on a remote path to paint. The blue colour would be perfect standing out from all its surroundings. We imagined how your dad would drive past and wonder where the heck this thing came from. We could not wait for work to finish and without taking a shower, we drove to Sippe’s Hardware in Mukinbudin, bought a brush and another bucket of blue paint (the first bucket would certainly not be enough to paint a whole tree). It was already dark when we got home, but that would not stop us. After 20 minutes of driving around, we found the perfect tree: it was big enough, but not so big that we needed a ladder, dead, so we wouldn’t harm it, and was on the side of a not too busy path. We came back at night, equipped with torches, gloves, brushes, the blue paint and dressed in some old clothing. To reach the top of the tree, you would lift me up on your shoulders and I would try to get the last bit of the tree whilst blue paint was dripping from the brush into your hair. We were freezing but giggling the whole time, as we imagined what your dad would do and how confused he would be when first seeing the bright blue tree on his farm. It became a two-day job and we really hoped we would not get caught by your dad. It was probably because we accidentally placed that wish upon so many shooting stars whilst painting the tree that faded into the night in its new dark blue dress. It was only several years later he would find it... Oh, and the purple plant pots? Well, I think they were also meant to be thrown out. But of course you had other ideas for them. One day, when I was no longer working on the farm, you sent me a picture of how you had added them to our tree. I had not laughed that hard in a very long time. We all miss you and your crazy ideas. GARDENING IN THE WHEATBELT Written by Carmela Kirszyk of Eaglewood Farm Welcome back to another year of gardening ideas and information. I hope you all had a break from the everyday chores and demands that are put on us all and that this year a head is better in every way and especially for our gardens. So how is your garden faring after the three spells of heat from hell? We have had 15 days of temperatures over 39 degrees and because they came in spells not spikes many plants had shut down for too long and could not revive themselves after the heat had passed. And of course those of us who were not able to give their plants extra water have had many sad if not dead plants. Having said all that, there are lessons to be learnt. More Bougainvilleas, Mandevillas, Broom (Bridal Veil), and a floribunda rose called Edelweiss as well as the well known Aussie plants like Eremophilas and Thryptomenes should be planted in our gardens in the future. These plants, just mentioned did not just survive the heat they flourished and flowered when all around them even well established plants were sulking. My idea of a good plant is one that looks good in our extreme summers. Plant of the Month – So allow me to add one more lovely plant to the list above. This month’s plant of the month is certainly a survivor. I bought my Alternanthera, Little Ruby, two years ago and took many cuttings from the initial plant. The cuttings grew roots very readily in water and then grew well in the garden while the weather was cool. However, whilst most of these did not survive the summer, the mother plant which I had repotted seemed to love the heat and the sun. The pot had a saucer which allowed some moisture to be retained from the once a week watering but that was it. It has been amazing to see this little plant thriving in our conditions. As the name suggests it has ruby leaves and is sold as a ground cover. There are quite a few Alternantheras some which have splashes of yellow on their leaves. Although these plants don’t like frost in a garden situation groundcovers can often be protected by other plants. This is one plant to look for. It’s time to… Plant – unless you are able to keep the water up to any new plants it probably best to wait until towards the end of March before you start planting new plants. But that shouldn’t stop you planning. If you like Hibiscus now is the time to choose one while they are in flower. If you’re a rose lover now is the time to order some. You can also put in another crop of your favourite summer veggies; more
zucchini, tomatoes and capsicums. Capsicums are a good plant to keep growing over winter. If you plant the new ones in a position with a northerly aspect, maybe in front of a north facing wall they will survive the winter and be fruiting well before the new crop that is planted in spring. Harvest – we are still harvesting peaches in the orchard and have also had the first Johnathon apples. In the veggie garden the tomatoes are going full bore, the snake beans are also producing well and the dwarf beans are just starting. We are also picking sweet corn, eggplants and silver beet. There are also lots of herbs during summer, with basil being the main one; there are five large jars of pesto in my freezer already. Things to do – from mid March fertilise the whole garden, this will help plants which have struggled with the heat to put on some growth before the cooler weather comes. Plan your veggie garden now so that you’re ready to plant out the autumn and winter vegetables by the end of March or beginning of April, some of these include all the Brassicas and many of the root vegetables. Consider some different ones like artichokes and fennel. If you’re planting Garlic now is the time to prepare the beds. The last word – Gardens add years to your life and life to your years.
