FROM THE EDITOR WELCOME. TO. TWENTY. SEVEN. TEEN. In roman numerals, it’s MMXVII. It’s the year of the Rooster. Better yet, it’s the year of the Fire Rooster! They say the rooster is trustworthy, with a strong sense of time keeping and is responsible at work. Boring, you say? I thought so too, but then I read that Beyonce is a rooster (as she was born in a year of the rooster many moons ago). SO, year of Queen Bey it is! Before I lose too many loyal readers, I’ll bring it back to a local level. This year has left the gate running and we’re unbelievably already two of twelve down. It’s been hot, it’s been cold, it’s been dry and it’s been gosh darn wet (which even if you had been living under a rock you’d be well aware of!). We’ve been chipping away here at the CRC with many pots on the burner. A couple of fun things coming up are the reveal of our Inside Out Project (more sneaky details on page 12), a Business After Hours on Thursday 9th March (hey farmers, it’s at Ag Implements so you should all come along too!) and the Tour de Quairading on Sunday 19th March (pretty poster on page 23). The Shire have got a couple of important things coming up. You may or may not be aware that our shire has a 15 year vision documented in a Strategic Community Plan. This plan gets updated every few years, and right at this very moment is your prime opportunity to have your say on the performance of our shire to date, and to tell them what you think their priorities should be for the next few years. You can (and you should!) do this in a couple of ways. First, complete the survey, you can find a link on the homepage of the website (www.quairading.wa.gov.au) or you can grab a hard copy from the Shire or CRC. Second, come along to the Community Open Day on Wednesday 1st March and have a chat in person (more info on page 11). I haven’t met a person in this town who doesn’t have an opinion or a story to share about our shire (positive, negative or everything in between) but until you direct those thoughts in a constructive manner towards this review right now, you’re not helping anyone. I feel like I’ve said this a few times over the past year, but we’ve made a few changes to the Banksia Bulletin! The Banksia Bulletin is a labour of love; with literal blood, sweat and tears going in to every edition. The heart of a local paper is without a doubt the local content, so thank you to those who contribute reports, stories and articles month after month. I strongly encourage any budding writers, or deep thinkers who need an outlet for their thoughts to put fingertips to keys and write me something! We have a few handy proof readers in our midst so fear not if your spelling and grammar isn’t up to par. Drive safe, be cool and bring on March. How bow dat. MEDICAL PRACTICE STAFF CHANGES Bonny King is returning to full time at the Shire. We are very sad to lose Bonny and sincerely thank her for her professional dedication to our staff and patients. We would like to welcome Tarryn Lear as our new receptionist. Tarryn has previously worked at York Medical Practice. As Tarryn does not know you, please introduce yourself when you arrive for your appointment. This will help Tarryn get to know you and ensure Doctor is advised of your arrival. Remember that as part of our Accreditation and for patient privacy and security, we will always ask you to confirm your name, telephone number and date of birth. NEW TELEPHONE SYSTEM If you ring the practice and we are unable to immediately answer the phone, our new system will pick up and play a message advising that “If this is an emergency please hang up and dial 000. If it is not an emergency please stay on the line and we will be with you shortly.” Whilst the message is being played, the system is still alerting staff to your incoming call so please do not hang up when the recorded message starts. If we have answered your call and need to put you on hold, you will hear a recorded repeat message advising we will be with you shortly. If your situation becomes an emergency while you are on hold, please hang up and dial 000. If the practice is unattended, the answer machine will pick up and give you instructions on how to obtain medical assistance. Please do not leave messages as this system does not record. In all cases, when experiencing an emergency, please dial 000 or attend the hospital.
SHINGLES VACCINE “Zostavax” is now available. This is a National Immunisation Program and available under Commonwealth Government Funding. Eligibility is for all patients 70-79 years of age. If you would like to participate in this Program and receive the shingles vaccine, please contact us for an appointment. We are always fully booked so when a patient fails to attend it is a total wasted appointment which someone else needed. We appreciate circumstances may change and you no longer need your appointment which is quite understandable and acceptable. BUT PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU NO LONGER NEED YOUR APPOINTMENT. We are happy to assist and change or cancel the appointment when you ring us. Without your help, we are not able to run a diary fitting patients in on the same day. If patients continually fail to notify us when they do not need their appointment or fail to attend we may look at introducing a fee which will be charged to everyone who fails to notify us of a no longer needed appointment. QUAIRADING PHOTO CLUB The Quairading Photo Club is a group of local photographers of all skill levels. We meet every second Tuesday of the month, from 7:30pm – 9:30pm in the Meeting Room at the Quairading CRC. We currently have about 10 members at every meeting and we would love to have more people join our club this year! The EMBRACE Documentary showed in the Quairading Town Hall on Thursday September 29, 2016. The screening was free to the public and there were about 40 people who attended. The evening was BYO with tea and coffee supplied. I’d like to thank the people who assisted in bringing the documentary to town. Thank you to the CRC, Jill & Tanieka who drafted and published the advertising, they tackled a chunk of the organising for the evening & gave the documentary the initial go-ahead. Thank you to the Quairading Shire, Quairading Curtain Raisers, Quairading Keep Fit group , Jill Dawson, Jane & Leah Davies, Penny Johnston, Bec Wilson, Maddy Johnston & Kyle Adams our bio box technician for their assistance & support towards the evening. There was no cost to attend the viewing, however guests on the night donated $243 towards the evening’s expenses. Those donations have been allocated to upgrading the technology for the Shire Hall Bio Box. Everyone in attendance on the night was aware we had initial glitches. Technology is changing so quickly, and we need to keep up to date with it. Thank you to everyone who attended Embrace. I hope you took home positive thoughts and ideas. Mary Stacey
RAISING MONEY TO THE CEILING FOR RFDS Greenhills Inn has been raising money to the ceiling to raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctor for over a year now. The fun way of fundraising requires participants to throw money on the ceiling in the bar with a 50 cent piece and a thumb tac. The money was removed on 1 January 2017 with an amount totalling of $3,370. Apryl said ‘We would like to thank everyone for contributing to such a great cause. This is a fantastic amount and beat our last effort of $2,075 in 2015. Everyone has a story to tell about how the Flying Doctors has helped them or a friend. They are an important part of our community.’ Greenhills Inn will continue to throw money on the ceiling for the Royal Flying Doctor Service in 2017 and hope the amount will grow! 41 Banksia Bulletin March 2017

“YOUR TOWN AND MINE” Newspaper clippings from the Countryman October 23, 1958. The article reads: People in the Eastern Wheatbelt can’t be blamed for feeling smug about their swimming pools. While Perth is still waiting a decision on where to build a pool they have gone ahead and built their own. Pools at Cunderdin and Merredin have already proved popular and Quairading will open its pool in about a month’s time. The 110ft x 36ft main pool with its 18ft x 36ft children’s pool and amenities cost about £25,000 to build. The money was raised by a loan which added about 1/2d in the pound to the general rate. The pool will be managed by ex-league footballer Ken Caporn who hopes to organise visits from city swimming clubs to boost interest in swimming. With the completion of the Quairading pool it is hoped to organise a swimming association in the Eastern Wheatbelt for inter-district competition at the various pools. A feature of the new pool is fluorescent lighting which will be used to light the pool and surroundings. This is the first time fluorescent lighting has been used in the State to light a pool. Water for the pool comes from a bore on the site and waste water will be used to spray lawns surrounding the pool.
QUAIRADING DISTRICT HIGH TO JOIN WHEATBELT SWIM FOR LITERACY The Rotary E-Club of Western Australia (“E-WA”) is delighted to announce that Quairading District High School has accepted our invitation to participate in the inaugural Wheatbelt Swim for Literacy ("Wheatbelt Swim") to be held at the Bruce Rock Aquatic Centre on Saturday 25 March 2017. The Wheatbelt Swim for Literacy is a fundraising and community event for participating Wheatbelt schools. Those schools that participate in the Wheatbelt Swim and obtain sponsorship will receive grants from E-WA and our charity, The Rotary Foundation. The Wheatbelt Swim is a generally non-competitive event which seeks to encourage participation by students and the community. The primary fundraising for the event is by way of sponsorship of swimmers. Registration for the Wheatbelt Swim on 25 March will commence at 4pm, with swimming commencing at 4.30pm. The Swim will conclude by 7.30pm. Entry to the Swim will be FREE. You can support literacy development at Quairading District High School by sponsoring a participating Quairading swimmer in the Wheatbelt Swim on 25 March 2017. You're welcome to come and cheer the swimmers on, too. Spectator entry to the Swim will be FREE. We’ll have a sausage sizzle at nominal cost to deal with those hunger pangs, too. What is the cash rate? I can guarantee all of you have watched an episode of Today Tonight where they are go undercover to expose the huge amounts of money the banks are making because the cash rate came down but peoples home loans haven’t… sound familiar? Spent time bitching about the banks because they didn’t pass on the rate cut? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not here to tell you the banks are hard done by, they make sh**t loads of money and it’s actually a good thing (I can explain that next month if you like?). When you borrow money to buy a house, the bank will normally let you pay it off over the next 30 years (how nice of them!).

Visiting your GP… Tips for the average bloke! We often talk to blokes about the importance of visiting their GP for a routine service visit or ‘check-up’ regardless of whether they feel unwell or not. These visits help you to stay health aware and if you do have particular risk factors, such as a family history of a certain disease, then regular check-ups may help your doctor pick up early warning signs. For example, high blood pressure may be an early warning sign of cardiovascular disease. I recently had my check up and I guess having a medical background puts me at a bit of an advantage when it comes to this sort of stuff, but for a lot of blokes it can be a bit of a daunting and at times confusing process. First and foremost I think there are a lot of benefits in having a regular doctor and practice that you visit. This gives you the opportunity to build a relationship over time, to the point where you are more comfortable talking openly about things. Your doctor gets to know you and will have a better understanding of your health needs and concerns. Your medical history also stays under the one roof making it easier to keep things up to date. With the average GP consultation time being around 10 to 15 minutes it’s important that you have a fairly clear idea of what you want to talk about (write a check list starting with the most concerning issue). Usually for two or more health issues you will need to book a longer consultation time. Be prepared! For a general health check, your doctor will want to talk to you about a range of stuff including your medical history, your family’s history, your lifestyle, diet, weight and how much you exercise. Be honest about your health and your concerns and most of all, don’t worry too much about being embarrassed. Doctors are usually very difficult people to shock and more than likely have seen or heard it all before. We all need to take responsibility for our own health and wellbeing. A lot of guys I talk to have no idea of what their blood pressure is normally or what it means for that matter. Get to know your normal parameters and other things like your cholesterol and PSA (Prostate specific antigen) blood tests so you can engage in conversation with your GP about them. It often helps to keep your own record of results and a list of any medications you may be on and what they are for. As we get older we inevitably encounter the increased risk of developing particular health issues such as prostate issues (over 45 years). Most GPs are pretty good at prompting us when needed but we still need to be an active participant. Don’t feel intimidated, you have the right to request certain tests and question things the doctor suggests. After all, this is about you and your GP working together. So when visiting your GP be prepared (take a checklist) and be involved, it’s your health, you are the expert on you. Open Letter to the Central Wheatbelt – from Bill Crabtree, Liberal Candidate I have been travelling throughout the Central Wheatbelt electorate hearing of your concerns for our towns, our state and even our country. We live in interesting times, the media seem to be missing the mark often and we are getting more of our trusted news from online sources. While we can all be proud of our great Australian history and heritage, I feel that many sense that we are slipping backwards. The general rural decline in rural prosperity, and moral, is largely influenced by what drives our businesses, being our agricultural production. A high priority must be that robust essential services for the Wheatbelt must be maintained and improved, along with safer roads, managing crime and providing employment opportunities. We can be thankful to the Liberal/National government for legislating Royalties for Regions which will remain an important foundation for maintaining and improving conditions of rural life. However, it is clear that our farmers are slowly becoming less competitive and this underpins rural vibrancy. The continuous trend of creeping rural exodus must be reversed in order to Renew Wheatbelt Prosperity. We need more jobs in our small unique and cherished towns. Robbing Peter to pay Paul is neither a wholesome approach nor a sustainable way to instil pride in our communities to move forward. As I travel globally often, while leading large Australian farmer groups, I learn that farmers in the America’s are often doing it better and that we are not competitive enough. So to combat this we can work harder and longer on our farms and make them bigger. We are not working as smart as we could be. I am pleased to say that as “No-Till Bill” I have helped WA farmers remain somewhat profitable during the dry 2000 years. Our wheatbelt’s prosperity depends largely upon efficient and economic wheat production. My dream, vision or target for the Wheatbelt is; “To help WA farmers produce 25 million tonnes of grain by the year 2025”. This extra production can be on the same piece of land that has been farmed long-term by families. I want to encourage young farmers to come back to their family farm, I want to help make farming exciting again. By lifting grain production by 60% farmers we will not need to expand farm size to remain competitive and will need to employ more people. This extra prosperity will flow through to rural businesses and the towns that host them! The current trend of expanding farm sizes comes at financial risk where droughts and frosts can cripple a business’s capacity to survive. For over 10 years there has been breeding technology sitting idle on the shelf which could help farmers fight droughts and frosts. It has been waiting for someone who can drive innovation and remove red tape. The loss of 5 million tonnes of grain from the WA Wheatbelt was worth One billion dollars and every one of these is multiplied 3 to 4 times in the regions. The question Central Wheatbelt electors need to ask is; how are we tracking? Do we need new leadership that is courageous, honest about the challenges, pragmatic and has experience in what it takes to make businesses profitable? I encourage you to consider giving me a chance to help Renew Wheatbelt Prosperity at the state election on the 11 th March.

THE BULL-ETIN Training for the 2017 football season officially started last Friday with approx. 23 players on the track, the enthusiasm and intensity was great to see. Not sure if the Perth boys enjoyed been eating by a million mozzies though (they will just have to toughen up!!!!!) The QFC committee worked extremely hard over the off season to secure Mick Outridge as the League Coach and Kyle Caporn as Reserves Coach. Mick comes highly credentialed as a football coach from the Kalamunda Football Club and coming off a successful season last year Kyle hopes to go one better in season 2017. The Jumper Presentation will be an opportunity to meet and welcome the coaches and new players at the Jumper Presentation. Quairading Tennis Club Ladies Open Day report Wow! How lucky were we – picture perfect weather for our Ladies Open Day on Wednesday 22nd February. With 52 players from far and wide – Merredin, Narembeen, Pingelly, Goomalling, Beverley, Northam, Roleystone, Mundaring, Helena Valley, Bruce Rock, Wamenusking & South Caroling and heaps of tennis to be played, the very pleasant conditions were a treat. Congratulations to all the winners and special thanks to all of our hard working locals who cooked up a storm and carried out all the tasks required for making Open Days run smoothly and successfully. Our sponsors for the day were – WFI Insurance, CBH Group, Quairading Farmer’s Co-op & Quairading Pub – we thank them very sincerely for their financial support of tennis in Quairading. Pennant Team update Not wanting to brag too loudly, but we’re pretty excited that our pennant team is currently sitting at the top of the ladder – undefeated. With one round to go which sees Quairading take on Goomalling (for the first and only time so far this season) we will have to wait and see who gets to play who in the semi-finals on Saturday 11th March and who makes it into the big one on Saturday 18th March 2017. Keep these dates free if you don’t mind watching quality tennis – it’ll be awesome. Men’s Open Day promo Calling all local blokes who haven’t picked up a tennis racquet in a few months (years) – we need you for a fun half day on the courts.
