FROM THE EDITOR I am very much enjoying the vibe of Quairading right now. We’re in that final sprint of the marathon that has been 2017. Everyone’s (somewhat) happily going hell for leather; getting crops off, starting work on resolutions made about this time last year, crossing jobs off lists that have probably been there a bit too long and some fantastic people are even getting organised for (grinches stop reading now…) Christmas! We’ve got a pretty full calendar this month at the CRC with a range of events and workshops to round out the year. And by “month” it seems we mean “week”. This is going to be fun! *I trust that no-one has taken offence to our use of the term ‘oldies’, it’s of course meant in the most endearing and respectful way possible! We’ve had a big few weeks lately pulling together a bunch of grant funding applications which will (hopefully) help our little piggy bank for some of next year’s events and initiatives. If you’re one of those fantastically organised people who are running a 2018 diary already (or are like me and use a financial year diary to avoid that daunting task each December) here’s some MORE dates to save: Thursday 8th March: Women’s Business (seminar on all things business and personal finance and lunch, oh and wine) Sunday 18th March: Tour de Quairading 2.0 (riding bikes, answering questions, eating sausage sizzles) In this Banksia Bulletin, we’ve included the report prepared by Anna from CreativeIQ from our Thrive to Survive community chat held on Monday 30th October—have a read! I’m definitely still processing and planning where to from here (but not without plans altogether), so feel free to share your post-event thoughts and advice. A huge thank you to all the kind and caring people who donated to Brittany’s “Chook’s Champs” in the MSWA Ocean Ride, raising funds and awareness of the terrible motor neuron disease. A total in excess of $6,300 was raised thank to you all. Very proud of them all completing the 50 and 30km rides—a few tired bodies! Thank you. Val Hayes.

SLOW DOWN AND ENJOY THE RIDE Harvest is upon us and the race is on again, Got to get the headers out and gather in the grain. Got to keep the pace up, the road trains in top gear, It’s a crazy, hectic, hell for leather, stressful time of year. Everything is flat out from the farmhouse to the sheds. Answering the two way, taking phone calls, making beds. Cooking meals, drying grain, kids home off the bus. Moving gear from paddocks with a minimum of fuss. Harvest is a time to push, to drive the horse power home. To work long days, and sleep short nights, feel knackered to the bone. Two weeks down, stress levels high, the team show signs of strain. The chaser driver hangs on in, with secret hopes of rain. But harvest stops for no man, and the drive does not subside. The record year upon us at the forefront of our minds. Run the lunch out, wash the clothes, Fix the bust hydraulic hose. Ring the truckie, feed the chooks, Update the BAS and office books. Shift the silo, move the bin, Which ute was the grease gun in? Check the bearings, order fuel, Where's the mobile set of tools? Note grain prices, load the truck, Where's he got the chaser stuck?! Change the tyre, switch to Mace, Can we keep up at this pace? Test the sample, take the grain, To CBH then back again. Pick up parts, drive to town... AND NOW'S YOUR CHANCE TO STOP, SLOW DOWN Leave speed behind you when you put your vehicle on the road. Rebel against the rush and put yourself in back off mode. Make your car your sanctuary, and shut the door on speed. And from fast-paced harvest pressure let yourself recede. Let's get through this season, a community together. Avoid the pain road trauma leaves, the scars that last forever. Stuck behind a road train? Don't struggle to get past. When all those tiny seconds saved could end up as your last. If you're choked with gravel dust, stress rising deep inside. Back off, breathe deep, and tell yourself Slow down, enjoy the ride. Dr Olu is a colleague of Dr Ade and Dr Joseph and we are working towards having Dr Olu attend on a permanent basis allowing our Doctors to work a three week rotation.

If this is an ongoing requirement, we will add a prompt notice to your record and our system will automatically remind us that you will be using rear parking each time you book an appointment. It is very important that you DO NOT drive down the pedestrian walkway to the front of the Practice. This is strictly for pedestrians and not vehicles. The driveway to the Doctor’s garage must also be left clear allowing a quick exit in the event of an emergency.

Meningococcal Vaccine Meningococcal disease is a life-threatening illness caused by a bacterial infection of the blood and/or the membranes that line the spinal cord and brain, and occasionally of other sites, such as the throat or large joints. The incidence of the disease has decreased significantly in WA – down from a peak of 86 cases in 2000 to a low of 16 cases in 2013 – but now appears to be increasing again due to the emergence of new virulent strains of serogroup W, and to a lesser extend serogroup Y, meningococcal bacteria. As a result of the increase in serogroup W disease in WA over the past three years, a funded state-wide meningococcal ACWY vaccination program for adolescents aged 15 to 19 years commenced this year, and most of those eligible are receiving vaccine at school during the third term. Eligible teenagers who are no longer at school can currently receive the vaccine at community health clinics and some university student health centres. The vaccine is also available at the Quairading Medical Practice. THE VACCINE IS ONLY FREE THIS YEAR FOR THE AGE GROUP OF 15-19. FROM 2018 ONLY YEAR 10 STUDENTS WILL BE ELIGIBLE.

CAUTION OVER THE FESTIVE SEASON
A cocktail of excitement, stress, tiredness and alcohol can create unexpected hazards in the home at Christmas. Did you know that more than 80,000 people a year need hospital treatment for injuries such as falls, cuts and burns during the festive period.
1. Hospitals reported 4 broken arms last year after cracker pulling accidents. 2. Three people die each year testing if a 9v battery works on their tongue. 3. Five people were injured last year in accidents involving out of control Scalextric cars. 4. Eight people cracked their skull in 1997 after falling asleep while throwing up into the toilet. 5. Eighteen people had serious burns in 1998 trying on a new jumper with a lit cigarette in their mouth. 6. Nineteen people have died in the last 3 years believing that Christmas decorations were chocolate. 7. Thirty one people have died since 1996 by watering their Christmas tree while the fairy lights were plugged in. 8. Fifty eight people are injured each year by using sharp knives instead of screwdrivers. 9. One hundred and one people since 1997 have had to have broken parts of plastic toys pulled out of the soles of their feet. 10. One hundred and forty two people were injured in 1998 by not removing all pins from new shirts.

First Australians conquer NYC marathon Published on Prime Minister and Cabinet’s website, 6 November Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, and Minister for Indigenous Health, Ken Wyatt AM, have congratulated the latest squad of Indigenous Marathon Foundation runners on conquering the legendary New York City Marathon. “The Indigenous Marathon Foundation uses running to promote health and build resilience and leadership in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island communities,” said Minister Scullion. “I’m proud of the Coalition Government’s support for the Foundation, a $1.3 million investment this year for a range of activities, including Deadly Fun Runs and school-based fitness activities. “Participants in the annual Indigenous Marathon Project are given just six months to train for the New York City Marathon, so this is a truly remarkable achievement.” Minister Wyatt said the Department of Health supported the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander athletes to travel to the New York City Marathon. “I congratulate the 2017 Indigenous Marathon Foundation Squad on their dedication to a milestone event they will remember for the rest of their lives,” said Minister Wyatt. “Participants in the annual Indigenous Marathon Project become agents of change in their communities, advocating for healthy and active lifestyles. “Leading by example, they complete a Certificate IV in Sport and Recreation and gain first aid qualifications and running coach accreditation, which links them to broader community engagement and fitness projects.” With support from the Indigenous Advancement Strategy, Deadly Fun Runs are hosted across the Northern Territory, Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia, providing walking and running events for people of all ages and ability. This year, more than 1130 people have taken part. Of this group, 125 went on to compete at the Deadly Fun Run Championships under the mentorship of Indigenous Marathon Project graduates. The Foundation’s I-CAN project uses sport to promote school attendance among 1500 children at six schools in the Northern Territory and Thursday Island. Where has 2017 gone, it is the end of November already !!!!!! Since our last BB page, it hasn’t stopped at Loosies. At the end of September, we hosted Helen Stubbings, Australian quilt and fabric designer who is known worldwide. It was such a coup to have her come to Quairading with her Trunk Show and conduct a workshop. We continued our crazy hectic schedule by taking the shop on the road to Cunderdin. The Cunderdin Quilters hosted a 3-day retreat at the Ag College at the beginning of October. A huge thank you to all the ladies at the retreat and especially to the Cunderdin ladies for organising a fantastic weekend. We have had a couple of weeks off and we are on the road again, this time to Northam for the Avon Valley Quilters Friendship day on the 11th November. From the 24th to 27th we will be on the road again but not taking the shop anywhere, we are all off to Melbourne for the Australian Quilt Market (and Tattoo Expo ;)) This is a ‘fact finding and buying’ trip where we meet quilt and fabric designers, research new techniques for us to show you next year. Well we made it back from Melbourne a little puffed but full of ideas and inspiration for next years projects. At AQM we were lucky to be in the audience when world renowned American fabric designer, Tula Pink entertained us with her insight into what inspires her with her fabric designs and the designing process. We will give you a sneak peep at what we are planning for 2018 in next month’s Christmas Banksia Bulletin. As Christmas is around the corner we have some great gift ideas so come on in and have a look. We will be closing Friday 22nd Dec and re opening on Tuesday 13th February 2018

GOLD GOLD GOLD! Local Quairading archer has success at The Australian Masters Games. Noel Stone, who shoots at the local sports club of Wamenusking where he has been shooting for six years was good enough to win three gold medals at the recent Masters Games in north West Tasmania. The Masters Games is only open to athletes over 30 years old and can enter by nomination, not qualification. Noel's wife Shauna played golf to come middle of the field after finding the fast grass greens unfamiliar but enjoyed the experience. Noel who shoots a long bow which in fact is made out of "Sandalwood" shot in four events over a five day period between Wynyard , Burnie and Heybridge. They included Target, Field and Clout, which he won the Target and 2 Field competitions, only to come 6th in the Clout,( clout involves shooting an arrow 145 meters into a 15 meter circle.) Noel is a member of the Bowmen of Melville only to get down there on the odd occasion but spends more time at his local club of Wamenusking.

SENIORS WEEK COME & TRY GYM DAY Thank you to everyone who came along to our 'Come & Try Gym Day' for Seniors Week 2017! We had a great turnout of locals, checking out the gym, gaining new info and tips from Frankie from Wheatbelt Exercise Physiology, Elouise from My Healthy Wheatbelt, Lisa from Quairading Gym, our local Practice Nurse Jess and a brief appearance from Candace from Time 2 Shape Up - thank you all for your expertise! # SAVE OUR CRC POSTCARD CAMPAIGN With thanks to Linkwest (our peak body) we're part of a state wide "Postcard Campaign" to help raise awareness of the importance of Community Resource Centres. We want to spread this awareness across the state and right into the metro area, to the people currently in government making decisions regarding the future funding of the CRC network contracts. Our state's budget has a big hole in it, and lots of great programs and initiatives will be sacrificed over the next few years to fix it - but we don't want that to be us. You can help by popping into the Quairading CRC and writing on the back of a postcard a reason or two why you think CRCs are an awesome and integral part of regional communities. Firstly let me extend our best wishes to all our farmers. With harvest in full swing we hope you reap the benefits of all the hard work involved in a demanding business that is often reliant on factors out of your control. The rich and long family history of so many farmers in our community is testament to the resilience of people in your industry. Every single member of our community helps to mould and shape the identity of our great town, however I firmly believe the men and women who work the land are our backbone. Your efforts help stimulate, drive and maintain so many aspects of our community. We salute you.
New officer arriving soon: As I write this edition I am pleased to announce I am expecting Dave Atkins’ replacement to arrive in the coming weeks. Senior Constable Deb Andrews will bring extensive policing experience in rural Western Australia from towns in the Great Southern, Pilbara and Peel regions. Deb is also a trained Child Interviewer with experience at the WA Police Child Interview Assessment Team. I believe her resume, skill set and experience makes an ideal fit for our community. We anticipate she will be on deck in time for Christmas and the New Year. Welcome Deb. Volume Crime: In my last edition I started providing you with an insight into the ethos that drives Policing in the Wheatbelt. I spoke of the Wheatbelt Police District 4 Command Directives designed and implemented to give clarity to how each Police sub-district must focus our Policing effort and resources for maximum impact. Those four areas are Reduce Volume Crime – Drug Offences – Road Policing – Target Priority Locations. As a community we can be proud of the fact volume crime in the form of burglary, stealing and damage are low in comparison to many towns within regional Western Australia. This speaks volumes (no pun intended) of the character of people within our community. We must, however, remain vigilant and takes steps to reduce theft, especially opportunistic theft.
Lock the doors and windows on your home, especially at night and when you leave the house. Do not leave valuables in your vehicles. Lock your vehicles. Keep the amount of cash you carry to a minimum. Take care with your credit card and other forms of identification that can be and have been the target of criminals for identify fraud. Secure your letterbox with a padlock. Be aware of your surroundings. Report suspicious vehicles or people.
Rural properties are often an easy target for theft. Recent incidents of people entering properties, knocking on the front door of the homestead to establish if anyone is at home and even identifying themselves and coming up with a feasible and believable explanation for their attendance is a copycat approach used in suburban areas and simply designed to establish if anyone is home. Surprise, surprise, if nobody is home they then simply help themselves to items in sheds and anywhere else they can find something of value. I strongly urge you to report such behaviour. Obtain the registration number of vehicles, write down a good description of the people involved and report the matter immediately. You would be amazed at what they will take. Theft of vehicles, quad bikes, tools and firearms are common throughout rural Western Australia. 36 Banksia Bulletin December 2017
You MUST make sure your firearms are LOCKED in an approved firearm cabinet and make sure the key is hidden away from the cabinet. Stolen firearms are a prized possession within organised criminal groups. There is also a strong demand for items that are considered to be of antique/vintage value. The old saying “one mans trash is another mans treasure” is very true in these instances. Old wagon wheels, cast iron sewing machine stands, antique farming tools, the iron seat from vintage farm machines, vintage child’s bicycles and pedal cars, old fuel and oil tins and bottles are items that have been stolen from rural properties within our district and neighbouring districts in recent months. Simple and inexpensive options are available to help protect against such theft. Quality battery operated cameras that have both day and night capability can be secreted in strategic locations that will take images that will prove invaluable in identifying people responsible for theft. Let’s face it a few hundred dollars spent on cameras is nothing compared to the expense of a harvester or countless other items vital to farming in the wheatbelt or the sheer annoyance of some thieving bugger taking items that hold significant sentimental value. Touch wood we have been free of stock theft in recent times. This has not been the case in other districts within the wheatbelt police district. The current price of sheep makes them an ideal target for theft. Once again be vigilant. Be the eyes and ears for not only yourself but also your neighbours. Unknown people and vehicles loading or moving stock should ring an alarm bell. Obtain registration numbers, contact the owner of the property, contact Police but be very cautious if you decide to challenge people in these circumstances. Contacting Police: In a two officer town it is impossible for Deb and myself to be available 24/7. I also realise it can be a little frustrating knowing when the Police Station will be open. The simplest way to contact Police is by calling the Quairading Police Station number on 9645 1000. If we are not working or not at the Police Station the phone will divert to the 24 hour Police facility at Northam. In the event that Northam Police staff are attending to other calls the phone will redirect to the Police Operations Centre in Midland. If you wish to speak with either Deb or myself simply ask the officer send an email to us with your name and contact number. If Police attendance is required they will be able to get hold of us and arrange attendance. In emergencies you should always ring 000. To help maximise Police availability the Quairading, Cunderdin and Kellerberrin Police work together in a cell arrangement whereby Police from one of those three stations will be on duty from 8.00 am to midnight 7 days a week. Do not be surprised if your call for assistance is responded to by our colleagues from either Cunderdin or Kellerberrin. We have a very strong working relationship with our cell partners and all are very capable officers. As Christmas draws near please stay safe on the road. Understand your journey will involve the increased presence of long/heavy vehicles on the road along with over length/width vehicles as machinery is moved between crops. I thought I would do another report on this lovely place. I am getting on well - thank goodness. I have finished another quilt and started on a table runner now (I told you that I must be MAD). The only thing I do not like is the cutting up of the material so if any of you inventors out there could come up with a robot that would cut up my material neatly I would be most grateful (and probably quite a few people in the quilting world). What a fantastic turnout there was at the Quairading Club on Monday 30th October to be a part of the Regional Development Australia – Wheatbelt “Enterprising Communities” program. Thank you, if you were one of them, for making the time to be there and for your enthusiastic participation. The Quairading CRC staff and committee were very keen to join this program to seek out inspiring ideas about how we can make our already vibrant and dynamic town of Quairading thrive and perhaps even grow – and inspirational ideas there were aplenty!!

A very successful Gala Day was held on Friday 3rd November with 24 teams from surrounding districts and the metro area competing including three Quairading teams. We couldn’t have asked for better weather, after the clouds lifted we had a lovely sunny day filled with laughter and friendly competition, the winners of the day were Beverley with 4 wins. Congratulations to Phyllis Brown and Pam Caporn (in the Captain’s Office) on such a well run event. Many thanks to the catering co-ordinators, kitchen helpers, bar staff, and all members who provided food on the day, we had many comments on the delicious lunch and afternoon tea.
