THE LATEST CARAVAN PARK UPGRADES There’s been action all over town recently—the latest including a new Caretaker Building at the front of the Shire of Quairading’s Caravan Park, and this Backpacker Building down the back of the park. I often find myself thinking that the end of July marks the end of Winter which makes me momentarily sad (end of birthday month is difficult enough to deal with!). So I’m in my annual spot of delight as a realise my winter soul gets to bask in another few weeks of chilly temps and perhaps, hopefully, some sunny winter days. In August here at the Quairading CRC, we’ll be hosting a two-day Mental Health First Aid workshop. This has been a long time coming—as many good things are. We met the facilitator Phillippa Henderson (from The Sharing Shed) by chance, as she called in for local tourist info (and maybe a public toilet?) last July, having just finished a camping trip to Esperance and was coming the good way home, back to Perth. Phillippa and I got to chatting about all the fabulous things Community Resource Centres do and she told me about all the plans she happened to have of decking out a van and travelling the state to deliver mental health first aid to regional communities—just like ours. We ran some background checks, decided Phillippa was a perfect fit for us, and talked her into coming back to host a “taster session” to help us gauge community interest in the full accredited workshop. This taster session proved the interest was well and truly there so we got to work seeking grant funding—as the per person cost was definitely still going to be a barrier between our locals and accessing the training. A collaborative relationship with a few surrounding CRCs and the Wheatbelt Business Network led to a successful group grant application to FRRR (Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal) and here we are, one week out from a fully booked, accredited, two-day Mental Health First Aid workshop here at the Quairading CRC! We think this is a really great achievement in itself, for our team and for our community, and we can’t wait to partake in the training ourselves and be better skilled in assisting our friends, family, neighbours, community members– and strangers on the street. In the works also for August, or springtime, is a local Cultural Bus Tour that we’re developing with local Noongar Elders. Perhaps a one off annual day out, perhaps running for a few weeks in Spring—our combined aim is to provide locals and visitors alike an opportunity to visit and learn about our region from local knowledge-holders, our Noongar Elders. Stay tuned for more info! Lastly, Curtain Raisers rehearsals are about to kick off and I’m anxiously stoked to be welcomed back as (amateur) Director for this year’s production of ‘Rock of Ages’! The Co-Op’s AGM is coming up, and wow! What a year it has been! We look forward to a historic level of shareholder’s attendance at this year’s AGM- we have some announcements to make, as well as a lot to celebrate. It’s also a wonderful opportunity to ask the board questions about our long-term planning and direction. The recent (ish) completion of the layover bay out the front of our building has had a wonderfully, positive effect on our sales. We are seeing more visitors and travellers through our store than ever before. Did you know our Co-Op board petitioned the Shire to get that layover bay installed? We are incredibly grateful for how quickly the Shire team were able to bring this idea to life. Hasn’t Todd Johnston done a wonderful job of our front windows? We are loving the colour and vibrancy the photos have given to the front of the store. PAGE 26

The café has been doing a roaring trade of soups, sandwiches, slices and rolls. We love that the relocation of the café to the front of the store is working so well, it’s making it so easy for people to pop in and grab something quick for lunch. Don’t forget our wonderful team also offers catering. We are still experiencing shortages in some product lines. The extreme weather conditions in key horticultural areas, farm worker shortages and border closures have seen the cost of fresh produce and meat rise. We are incredibly aware of the pressure this puts on household budgets and are working tirelessly to get this cost down. A small silver lining is that we haven’t seen a reduction in the quality of the fruit and vegetables. Our humidity-controlled fridges are doing a wonderful job of keeping the high-quality fresh produce, at its freshest. We are seeing more shoppers from neighbouring towns than ever before all commenting on our fresh produce quality. Our online shop is still open, we are still pinching ourselves that Quairading has a ‘click and collect’ supermarket! Have you noticed all the new product lines we have gotten in recently? Cheeky Brothers pizzas (including their gluten free range), a wide range of native teas and fresh pasta. Back by popular demand soon will be Beerenberg sauces, chutneys, and pickles. The increase in the support our community has given us in the last year, as well as the increase in visitor traffic means we are breaking sales records. All this translates to being able to stock more variety and securing better wholesale discounts. In summary the more people shop with us, the better our shop gets! We really can’t thank our community and shareholders enough for their support. We acknowledge how scary a pandemic has been, but as a result we have seen people change the way they shop and be more mindful about where they spend their money. This change in shopping behaviour has been a blessing for our co-operative and has funded so many of the improvements we have been able to deliver. Are you not a shareholder of our co-operative? Congratulations Britt! Brittany Hadlow recently represented Quairading at the Eastern Districts Group Judging in the nationwide Rural Ambassador Competition for 2021. After excelling in the panel interview and delivering an engaging and inspiring speech to the meeting delegates, Britt took the title and will now represent the Eastern Districts at State level! State Judging will be held in Perth in late September 2021—we wish Britt well, and know she will represent our region superbly! The Rural Ambassador Competition is a national competition aimed at young adults from rural areas who have a passion for living and working in their communities. The competition aims to discover the next generation of rural leaders who have the desire to represent and promote their community, their region and their state.

Warrior Wellbeing Suicide: You cannot address a problem without talking about it It does not matter what the issues are in our life, we must have a conversation and talking to someone about the situations we find ourselves in will relieve pressure and help us to normalise our own response to these issues. The challenge for all of us is to recognise where we are at, and then work through it. As a society we have perhaps become too politically correct about what we talk about and how we talk about it! Conversations around suicide are a classic example of this! When we consider that 75% of suicides in Australia are men, it is important to develop an understanding of life problems in our own lives and in the lives of others around us. Suicide does not have a set of risk factors that you can refer to and suicidal ideation is not necessarily a mental illness. Suicide prevention is everyone’s business. There is a lot to talk about when we are discussing suicide, and it is essential that we all learn more, but three key points summarising what we know about suicide are: A distressed (suicidal) person does not want to die. They want to stop the pain; It is safe to talk about thoughts of suicide with at risk people; Suicide is not usually a complex decision, the reasons (layers) however behind the suicidal thoughts are complex, and usually need professional help. We also know that a lot of completed suicides are a result of people being under extreme distress (what we call situational distress) and not from a mental illness. We do not have to have a diagnosed mental illness to complete suicide. People quite often ask, when should I be concerned? Be observant about any changes in a person’s situation, anything that is out of the ordinary for that person. Some experts spend all their time talking about indicators of risk, and higher risk groups (men for example). However,
we all should be deemed at risk if we have shit going on in our life. Suicide can happen to anyone, anywhere, anytime. Knowing individual human capacity is the unknown factor! We should never underestimate the power of ordinary people to make a difference and the important role we can have supporting someone through a difficult patch in their life. This can be in the three areas of our life where we often connect with people - our family, workplace and/ or community group. We must always remember a conversation can change someone’s life. Sometimes this is confused with, a conversation can save someone’s life (only that person can save their own life). We do not know if someone is suicidal unless we ask. If we have that gut feel about the person, we must ask. It’s not easy, we do not need formal training and our ‘language’ is up to us. We do however need awareness, empathy and the ability to listen. If the answer is ‘yes’ put in place an immediate plan for both support and follow up ensuring the safety of all. We need to be prepared to act. There is plenty of help out there (refer to useful contacts below), the local mental health team, local doctor, and other support services in your area. Be prepared by becoming informed. Updates from the Shire of Quairading Caravan Park Projects The Caretaker building and Single Accommodation Rooms have now arrived in Quairading. It was a little hairy with the delivery having experienced 20+mm of rainfall the night before. Luckily our quick thinking team shored up the ground with some blue metal so the truck could off load its cargo on schedule. Thanks to Adam, Allan and the Works team who assisted in this process. The next step is the exterior concrete and roof structures such as verandahs, carport and alfresco patio. The buildings complement the existing facilities at the Caravan Park. Along with the Cabins, they have all been built by Modular WA and match in design and finishing. The Shire anticipates holding some sort of event so those who are interested can have a look through the new installations.

Work is now underway on the Light Industrial Subdivision. There will be two blocks available in the initial offer with possible future expansion. The Shire is very pleased to be able to support this development towards future investment and economic opportunities in Quairading.
Staffing Changes The Shire would like to officially welcome Leah Horton to the role of Executive Manager of Corporate Services. Leah comes to Quairading from a role at the City of South Perth. She is very much looking forward to becoming a part of the Quairading community with her husband Anthony and children Violet and Darcy. Quairading Golf Club Shattock Cup was held on Friday 16th July with a fine day forecast. The winner was Jenine Robinson from York with 51 points. Runner up was Joy Hamilton from Bolgart on 50 pts. Gross Winner was Shauna Stone on 38 pts. Carol Comley (18 holes) winner was Suanne Crossland from Corrigin on 39 pts and runner up was Di Wallwork with 36 pts. A great day was enjoyed by all with our course looking fantastic. Well done to all of our club members and a special thank you to the non golfers that gave us so much help on the day so that we could enjoy our golf. Congratulations to Cam Fraser and Stuey Wilson who were runners up in the Beverley 4Ball last Saturday. The men are looking forward to the Dolin Cup and our 4Ball this Saturday.

Local archers shine in State Titles An outstanding weekend of shooting saw local archer Weng George takeout the female champion title at the traditional Archery Australia state titles at Wamenusking on 10th and 11th July. In the mens’ competition Andrew Szczecinski, Andrew George and Dane Bingham placed first second and third in the hybrid longbow section and club founder Noel Stone added to the medal tally with a creditable 3rd in the traditional bow section. Forty archers from five clubs across the state took part in the tournament which included both the title shoot and novelty events. A very wet Friday night turned into very good weather for the event. In traditional archery, archers use a long bow and wooden arrows. The title shoot was conducted over both days on a ‘3d’ course of rubber animals. It consisted of a three arrow per target shoot on Saturday and a single arrow per target shoot on Sunday. The single arrow event means that shooters do not have the advantage of sighting up with their first arrow, adding to the difficulty of the competition. Novelty events included moving targets set up on a flying fox; five rolling targets and a 30 second speed shoot. A special ‘winner take all’, last man standing, ‘bum shoot’ which included a Stihl chainsaw prize (novelty of course), added to the evening’s humour. Wamenusking archers’ wives and friends catered for the event which included an outstanding Saturday night roast beef, potato bake and salad mains and Shauna Stone’s special hot chocolate pudding. Old age, just a number! Submitted by Terrance Kean. Old age, just a number! Bull****, it's not. We start our journey, in life, struggling to stand and walk and run. Now, we have the same problem, trying to stand up and walk. Terrified of falling we do the soft shoe shuffle, before we take giant steps for man or woman. Babies bounce, we don't. Sometimes you have to do little mincing steps so legs warm up and realise what they are for. Bloody brain still feels young, okay for him he doesn't have aches and pains, just tells you they are there. How many of us wrinkly dinosaurs listen to the immortal words (come on, you can do it) bovine excrement to me. Lying brains have been telling us for centuries!!!! Ask us old folk with plastered arms and legs? Universal answer, (I thought I could). Another topic is when we are little helpless bubbies, we are changed, bathed, fed, and especially little boys, can wet the bed, no worries at all. But ask us what it's like to slip into this incontinence, poo world. Brain comes alive and tells you. You dirty old bugger. Guilt rages. You are back at the beginning, sadly not all is wonderful. Somebody tells a joke and you have trouble with peeing and laughing. Then the sneeze pee, cough pee, bending down garden pee. How cruel. Then there is flatulence or in Aussie idiom, FARTING, which is not good for those near you or methane in the climate. Our daily milk is in danger of vanishing. Industry belches toxins in the air while cows release methane, my thinking is, if methane could be used as a weapon! Cattle would double.

Gardening in the Wheatbelt Written by Carmela Kriszyk of Eaglewood Farm The saying goes “it never rains but it pours” Of course I’m using the literal meaning here. It’s almost as if the heavens were aware that our soils were super dry and needed the long sustained gentle rain that we have enjoyed over the month of July. At Eaglewood Farm I can finally say our tanks are full and our dams are replenished with streams of water still pouring in from the swales. Some of the newly planted bare rooted trees may be water logged but most will survive and that’s all we can hope for. The crops are looking lush and healthy and when the sun shines the bright yellow of the canola fields is almost blinding. It won’t be long and there will be lines of tourist cars lining roads in the hope of getting the best photo of these bright yellow fields. However, there is beauty to be seen and enjoyed in more inconspicuous places. For example the tea tree shrubs, Leptospermum are already flowering on our farm and they will soon be followed by tiny pink everlastings, blue Leschenaultia and the purple Hardenbergia to name a few. I encourage everyone to take some time to enjoy this time of the year in the garden and bushland and perhaps even invite some city friends to see this lovely part of the state. Plant of the Month – this month’s plant is Senecio Angulatus with the common name being Creeping Groundsel. It is also sometimes known as Cape ivy; it is a succulent flowering plant in the family Asteraceae and is native to South Africa. The name of this plant is not common at all and if we lived anywhere else but where we do, I wouldn’t be writing about this lovely plant. And that is because almost anywhere else it is a weed. In my garden and even in Perth it is a well behaved and very attractive scrambling twining plant that likes to hang over fences and walls. In my garden it has struggled to survive because it’s only the tough that get any chance at all here. So for about four years it has slowly climbed the teepees that it is on and not really produced many flowers. Then this year perhaps because of the summer rains it has produced masses of flowers and has finally earned it place at the back of the yellow border. In other places it spreads by seed and by layering but I grew mine from a cutting taken in autumn. I am only recommending it to responsible gardeners who would not allow it to take over in their garden. It is certainly much prettier than Gazanias which spread into bushland very quickly and are still sold in nurseries even though their weed potential is very high.

In mid to late August we will start harvesting swedes, turnips, sugar snap peas, snow peas, red cabbage and artichokes. There’s also parsley and coriander galore! Things to do – August is the month for pruning grape vines; if you’re worried about how to tackle this job there are lots of YouTube videos that are really helpful. Other trees that can be pruned during winter are the pome fruits which include apples, pears and quinces. If you haven’t It’s time… already pruned your roses it needs to be done as soon as Sow – if you have a warm window sill sowing spring possible; then fertilise and spread organic mulch over the flowering annuals and some summer vegetables during top. We have found that after pruning is a good time to August is a good idea. Uniting Church Coraling Street This month in the Gospel readings we have been following the travels of Jesus around Lake Galilee. We have looked at some of the miracles and healings He performed. He was very popular except for his own town and family. The people thought He was a Prophet and wanted to make Him king but that was not what He wanted. The Old Testament readings in 2 Samuel told us about the life of David, his successes and his failures. We can relate to these choices that we make and Paul tells us in Ephesians that in all things we can have God’s Grace and Spirit with us when we believe in Jesus. Sunday 1st August Service 10.30am P.
