Another birthday month has been and almost gone, and by golly I’m glad it only happens once a year! The nearing back end of July means there’s only one beautiful month of winter left and while I actually feel pretty gypped by the lack of proper wintery days we’ve had; I think the Wednesday night front rolling through as I write this is going to make up for it! May it be full of rain for the crops and the wildflowers and the water tanks and the dams. This July we held another ripping Cabernet & Canvas workshop on Friday 20th which produced a stunning array of cabernet-induced masterpieces (see cover). Thanks to everyone who booked a ticket and came along, we cut it fine with our numbers but luckily took enough bookings to let the workshop go ahead AND make it financially viable for all involved. Read all about word sleuth Tamara’s experience with the paint brush and the wine glass on page 29. This week I got to play wallflower to a really great workshop that the Quairading CRC brought to the school called “Project Empower”. Delivered to the high school girls by a couple of epic volunteers from Eastern States based organisation Country to Canberra (founded by my new WCW, Hannah Wandel, look her up!) it was full of conversations about empowerment, leadership, gender equality and so much more. While there seems to be a new movement pushing for equality everyday (be it gender or other), we’ve still got a boat load of assumptions, widely accepted norms and double standards to break down; but I reckon these gals are ready to help us do it! Lastly, if Succession Planning is in your future, you should book yourself in and come along to the Succession Planning Seminar at the Quairading CRC on Wednesday 8th August. The seminar has been organised by Valenti Lawyers, with all ticket sales being generously donated to the Quairading CRC—that’s us! Valenti Lawyers have been great supporters of our local events, often kicking in a nice handful of cash to make things possible. Give us a call and we’ll hook you up with a ticket. When you return for follow-up appointments for on-going conditions, all patients will be Bulk Billed for their appointment. When you are recalled for any of the above reasons and being bulk billed, if you have a new non-related medical concern you wish to discuss with the GP you will need to make a separate appointment. All commercial driver licence medicals are privately billed for all patients regardless of relevant health cards. The reason being that commercial driver licence medicals attract GST. Medicals for a third party are privately billed with the exception of Centrelink. Flu clinics are bulk billed for all patients however, fees apply for private patients to cover the cost of the non-Government supplied vaccine. Cost is $20.00

Skin clinic appointments for the procedure are bulk billed with a fee to ALL patients of $10 for the cost of the first liquid nitrogen visit and $5.00 for subsequent visits for the same lesion/s. New lesions will again attract a fee of $10.00. Additional charges attached to both Bulk Billing and Private fees for ALL patients. Private fees and bulk billing apply to the consultation. Consumables are items we must purchase for use during a patient’s visit and this cost must be covered by the patient with or without a Commonwealth concession card and is payable at time of consult. The cost of the consumable to private patients will be billed as a separate item at the time of your consult as it is not covered by Medicare or private health fund. Examples of consumables which attract a separate fee for ALL patients include, but not limited to; Ear irrigation (ear syringe) Spirometry (testing of lung capacity) Pregnancy testing (including Lady Doctor Visits) Removal of Foreign Body from eye

MY HEALTH RECORD and SHARED HEALTH SUMMARY If you have a My Health Record you can sit with Doctor or our Practice Nurse and review your record including current medications, allergies, medical history and immunisations. This allows your record to be updated where required as well as having relevant information, selected by yourself, uploaded to your My Health Record. Your Shared Health Summary can be uploaded when any changes occur with your medical information. If you have any questions or would like an appointment to upload your Shared Health Summary to your MY HEALTH RECORD, please ring the Practice on 9645 1210.

WELCOME AXEL! The Quairading Rotary Club is hosting an exchangee from DENMARK. His name is Axel. He is currently 15 years old and will turn 16 on August 7 (after his arrival). Axel is the youngest of 4 boys. All three of Axel’s brothers have been on exchange, and his family have hosted many exchange students too. Axel’s current subjects are Danish, English (since grade 3), History, Social Studies, Math, Geography, Biology, Psychical Education, Physics/Chemistry & French. Axel plays tennis, plays bass guitar, likes to work out at the gym and is a Manchester United fan. He sings, enjoys carpentry and comes from a family of doctors and has plans to be a surgeon. CABERNET MAKES THE CANVAS Written by Tamara Spark
T
here's nothing quite like being told you are a ‘gifted artiste’...I assume, the highest appraisal I received was ‘above average’ accompanied by that tell tale lack of eye contact and high inflection at the end of the sentence.
The ridgy-didge artists, Ella Dent and Jaccie Gillett, expertly piloted the evening and tickled our ears with these and other similar words of encouragement. But, the humble truth is, there wasn’t a dud between the 25 or so everyday Joe’s turned recreational artists. I’d happily re gift or hang any of the finished canvas’s in a toilet, dark nook or spare room of my house. If you get the opportunity to attend a Cabernet and Canvas Workshop I couldn’t recommend it highly enough. Believe me when I say, I am one of those people with ZERO artistic ability- miming and cheating is required for me to get any result in Pictionary – but not only did I have a grand old tipsy time, I was rapt with my finished product. Quairading seems to produce a remarkable amount of gifted creative peoples I know, but don’t let your lack of talent (like yours truly), stop you from giving it a crack. Enough of me spruiking though, the photos are proof enough. Thank you to BP Quairading for whipping up and delivering Pizzas (+ some complimentary chips) and thanks to the farmers who grew the grapes that went into Kate Walker’s 1 litre value bottle of wine.

Noongar Cultural Corner A monthly article produced in collaboration with local Noongar representatives and Noongar cultural organisations. Badjaling Mission reserve was created in 1933 for the United Aborigines Mission and originally also included all the land contained in DEC Reserve 23758. The reserve was the camping ground and home for about 30 Nyungar families from 1887 to 1954. It was used by local Nyungar people prior to colonisation for traditional hunting, food collecting and camping as it contained several freshwater sources. Nyungar people have continued to camp in the area from time to time even after people were officially moved to Quairading Reserve in 1954 when the mission closed. Nyungar people formally moved back to the Reserve in 1980, the current housing being established in 1998.Please be aware permission needs to be sort before visiting Badjaling.
Badjaling Nature Reserve is just one of the many outstanding reserves in the Shire of Quairading. This 272 hectare reserve is managed by the Department of Parks and Wildlife. What makes this reserve so special is the rare plants that exist in the reserve. Due to land clearing the majority of this diverse bushland has been lost. This reserve is a terrific spot for the bird watcher, native plant enthusiast or just to admire nature as a whole. Situated approx. 10kms east of Quairading it’s a place to be admired.

MY LOOSE STITCHES REPORT Another report from my time spent at the magnificent Loose Stitches. I have had a bad year so far. First I had to have a serious eye operation (not a cataract) and I was under the hospital for several months. Then my sewing machine decided it would play up. So down the repair shop where it was for several weeks and then home. At long last back to work at Loose Stitches. They said that they missed me! But that is a matter of opinion. The quilt I am doing in painful – there seems to be hundreds of squares to sew together. Ugh. Slowly and surely I am getting there and I hope that at the Ag Show Day I win a GOLD MEDAL. Ha Ha Ha.

NORTHAM PERFORMING ARTS FESTIVAL Congratulations Quairading! In the last week of June you may have noticed a lot of Quairading cars travelling over to Northam. Quairading once again had many students enter in the Northam Performing Arts Festival. On Sunday we had Harrison participate in Dance. Tuesday in Northam we had students from Quairading performed on the piano, flute and guitar. Friday the children from Quairading Singing Buddies (choir) performed as well. All these students who performed received a Highly Commended, an Excellent or an Outstanding! KNOW YOUR LOCAL CWA I was recently asked where the money goes that CWA Quairading raise in the community. I suppose you could call us quiet achievers in some respects so I thought I would compile a list for anyone who is unaware of what we do. These items are in no particular order and many are ongoing throughout the years. 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) 7) 8) 9) 10) 11) 12) 13) 14) 15) 16) 17)
We paid for the water fountain with attached dog drinking bowl located in the carpark opposite IGA entrance. Provided 2 bird baths for the hospital. We provide toiletry bags (with soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, comb and razor) to the hospital for persons who are admitted who do not have these items with them. Provided a laptop computer for the air rifles club. We fully sponsor a person between the ages of 17 to 25 to attend a Young Leadership Weekend Workshop; we endeavour to do this on an annual basis. We would like to encourage members of the community to nominate someone. We subsidised AVIVO to hold Yorga meetings in the rooms every Wednesday. We have held Mental Health Information days during Mental Health Week. We held an Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training Course, with all in attendance receiving certificates. A donation has been made to the Harrison Woodcock Ballet Trust Fund. Education Scholarships are available for high school students and tertiary students. We provide welfare assistance to people in hardship in the Shire of Quairading. We also provide assistance to residents for medical aids who are in hardship. Each year there are scholarships available for rural medical, dental, nursing and agricultural students. With donated wool we make up rugs, beanies, scarves and toys for children in Wanslea Children’s Foster Home. Baby bundles are sent overseas each branch in the State do these. Support is provided to victims of rape in refugee camps. Costs were made by Head Office to assist a member to attend the National Association of Rural Mental Health in Denver, USA who was the only International speaker. This was also a study tour to learn about Peer run services in USA and how they compare to Australia.

BALLET UPDATE
From Harrison Woodcock & co
O
ver the last two months Harrison has continued to work hard, attending classes five days a week, practising at home and at the Quairading Town Hall, taking part in competitions and Festivals, and travelling to Melbourne for Australian Ballet School Male Intensive Training. In June he took part in the 20th year Anniversary of Dancequest, which was held at the Swan Park Calisthenics Centre in Midvale. It is an amazing competition, with an extraordinary number of performers who take part in various genres of dance over 5 days; 31 May – 4 June. Harrison performed both his Classical and his Lyrical solos, and his Lyrical, ‘Electricity’ won second place. He performed so strongly, and I was so proud of him as there were technical difficulties with the music for many competitors, and initially his music didn’t play, yet he still went on and performed his dance. The adjudicators allowed him to perform again with the music; this really tests the mettle of any performer to carry on, even when things go wrong. During this week he also performed at the Royal Academy of Dance Festival, held at John Curtin College of the Arts in Fremantle, another prestigious dance competition with some very strong classical ballet dancers performing. He was given very positive comments on the adjucator’s report.

The Northam Valley Performing Arts Festival (no longer AVAS) held it’s dance component in Northam on June 23rd and 24th at the Northam Senior High School. It was a wonderful day of dance, not only for Toodyay Ballet School, and the Rural Dance School branches, but we also got to watch the Irish and Highland dancers, and it was great to see a completely different genre of dance than we are accustomed too. Although it was a very busy day and half of dance, it was enjoyable and friendly place to perform. We were even lucky enough to have three lovely Quairading people drive over to watch! Harrison competed in nine different dances, including his Own Choreography Lyrical solo ‘Little Wonders’, and a new Lyrical trio ‘That Girl’. He danced very well, receiving many ‘Outstanding’ and ‘Excellent’ marks on his

Adjudicator’s reports. We were quite stunned when he was also awarded the ‘Georgia Haddrill Award for Excellence in Dance’ 2018. (Congratulations to the QDHS Singing Buddies and Danika and Stella Squiers for their fabulous singing on the Friday ) The first week of the school holidays saw Harrison and I flying to Melbourne to attend the Australian Ballet School’s Male Intensive Training Programme. This was made possible by the Fundraising that has been done on his behalf, through the raffle earlier in the year, various cash donations, sale of native trees (the soil and some pots donated by Dustin and Lisa McCreery of Chatfields Nursery), and the Shire of Quairading. We thank everyone who has helped him to get there. It is so amazing to

be part of such a big group of talented young male dancers (around 60) that have had to audition and be accepted into such an elite training opportunity. They travel from all over Australia to take part. This year Harrison’s teacher from Toodyay Ballet School, Mrs Lani McGeady, came to watch him on his last day. He was very proud to be able to show her what he had learnt in class.

GARDENING IN THE WHEATBELT Written by Carmela Kriszyk Hello everyone and welcome to your new gardening page. As you all are aware gardening in our beautiful Wheatbelt differs from gardening on the coast or in the southwest of our state. Our summers are hotter and the winters are colder and neither do we have the luxury of the abundant rainfall received in the southern areas. It’s important to access relevant and accurate information for our gardens to thrive and make a positive difference to our lives. I hope to share my small amount of knowledge and little experience with you all. If anyone has any topics you would like me to cover or any questions you would like to ask please email the Banksia Bulletin (via quairading@crc.net.au).
Plant of the Month Ornamental Grape, vitis Vinifera, grows well in the Wheatbelt. You don’t have to worry about the birds nicking the grapes with this vine because it doesn’t produce any. But what it lacks in fruit it makes up for in providing shade and beautiful tones of bronze and crimson during autumn. Train it to grow over a pergola or even as a relaxed hedge. Plant in spring, about two weeks before planting, add compost, some sheep manure and some horse manure to the hole and mix well. The planting hole should be twice as wide as it is deep. On planting day make sure the vine is not root bound if it is gently pull the roots apart then place the plant in the hole and back fill firm the soil without stomping on it too much. Water in with some wetting agent added to the water. During the first summer give the plant a good soak at least once per week. When it has lost its leaves at the end of winter prune it to a desired shape and the cuttings can be used to start new plants. Simply put a cutting of about 30cm into potting mix keep moist in a semi shaded spot and it will shoot during spring and be ready to plant out the following year. PAGE 44

Harvest – late mandarins, navel oranges, grapefruit, kumquats, Chores – winter pruning can continue into August but should be finished soon because most deciduous trees are beginning bud by now. Spray stone fruit with copper at bud burst to avoid fungal problems and leaf curl. The last word…… Loam wasn’t built in a day.

BEEF & PASTA BAKE A recipe from the team at the Quairading Farmer’s Co-op
Words by Tamara Spark, Quairading CRC: Who doesn’t love a recipe that has such a great basic structure that it allows you the freedom to experiment and put your own twist on it? You are guaranteed a scrumptious plentiful dinner (+ left overs) with this one, ideal for families with many mouths to feed. 6 - 8 Servings Prep time depends on your knife skills and your remembering to defrost the mince ahead of time– but approx 10 mins. Cooking time is 15 mins on the stove top and 30 minutes baking in the oven. You could prep the dish the night or morning before and then bake the night of. INGREDIENTS 2 large onions (diced) 4 tablespoons of olive oil 2 bacon rashers (diced) 500gms mushrooms (diced thinly) 1/2 teaspoon chilli flakes Salt & pepper to taste 1 500g tin tomato soup 3 heaped tablespoons tomato paste 1 bag pasta spirals 500gms-1kg of Beef mince Cheese + Bread crumbs to top METHOD Step 1: Place first 6 ingredients listed in a fry pan and sauté until onions are soft and translucent. Step 2: Add the mince and cook until fully browned. Step 3: Add the can of tomato soup and tomato paste and simmer for another 10-15 minutes on low heat to allow the sauce to cook down and concentrate. Step 4: In a separate saucepan bring a pan of water lightly salted to the boil, add the pasta spirals and cook to the instructions of the pasta packet. Step 5: Combine pasta and meet mix, pack tightly into a casserole dish. Sprinkle with cheese, breadcrumbs and any spices of your choice. Step 6: Dinner is served! PAGE 46

e’ve all heard of the hormone testosterone, but we might not know just how important it is that we look after our testosterone levels for our physical and mental health and wellbeing. Hormones themselves are the chemical messengers that the glands in our body send through our blood to our organs. They are necessary for growth, reproduction and wellbeing. The ones that are particularly important to men are the male sex hormones called androgens. Testosterone is the most important androgen and affects everything from our metabolism, our recovery time after physical exertion, our mood and of course our sex drive, performance and health. All things that we care about, that help define us as men and that we don’t want to compromise on. As testosterone is such a vital part of living a full and healthy life, it’s important to keep a lookout for signs of testosterone issues, most commonly testosterone deficiency. It is normal for men to have their testosterone peak between 20 and 30 years of age; and from
there fall gradually as we get older to one third of our maximum amount. In fact, by 45 years of age 4 out of every 10 men have symptoms of male hypogonadism (lowering testosterone). Despite it being common it is still important to keep an eye on it as testosterone deficiency can have severe consequences. In our youth it can present as failure to go through normal puberty, including not having our voice break, not getting a normal growth spurt or even developing breasts. This is all to be avoided if possible! In adults there are a range of potential symptoms including weight gain, mood changes, reduced strength, difficulty getting erections and a lower sex drive. These symptoms and others can have a detrimental impact on our health and quality of life so being aware of testosterones’ role in our lives and the difficulties we can have with it is important to all men. If we find ourselves experiencing these issues we should go to the doctor and have a simple blood test that will check our testosterone levels. If we are suffering from a severe deficiency it is
likely we will be administered Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) in the form of injections, gels, lotions, creams, patches and tablets; some of which can come with negative side effects. Fortunately, there are ways to increase our testosterone short of pharmaceutical help. Primarily through lifestyle choices. That is getting enough sleep, avoiding alcohol and drugs, staying active; especially through weightlifting, minimising stress levels and getting all our vitamins and minerals through a balanced diet, will all have a significant impact on our testosterone levels and general health. Like with most aspects of our health the same fundamentals affecting everything else also affect testosterone levels. Good health is a holistic process and if we do these things to take care of our testosterone we will enjoy the benefits of healthy testosterone levels throughout our lives. As always if there is any doubt it’s important to speak to your GP, especially when something as important as testosterone is involved.

UNITING CHURCH Coraling Street TELLING ABOUT GOD A first grade teacher tells about some of her experiences. She told about one little girl who came to school one winters day wearing a beautiful white angora beret, white mittens and a matching muff. As she came through the door, a mischievous boy grabbed the white muff and threw it in the mud. After disciplining the boy the teacher sought to comfort the girl. Brushing the mud off her muff, the girl looked up to the teacher and said in a quiet and responsible manner. "Sometime I must take a day off to tell him about God". As far as the girl was concerned, everything that was wrong with the boy could be put right if only she could tell him about God. How much better the world would be if only we could tell more about the love of God and Jesus.?
