PENNANTS CHAMPS
The place to be on Saturday 21st March was the Tammin Bowling Club for the East Avon Men’s Pennants Grand Final. Some awesome bowls were played, with every bowler contributing in a great day’s play. In First Division, Quairading Red were victorious by 9 Shots over Kellerberrin, and was there some breath holding towards the end of that tussle!! In Second Division, Kellerberrin proved too good for our Quairading Team. Congratulations to both Teams on making the Grand Final and representing Quairading with the best of their ability. All of our bowlers should be very proud of themselves for the way they played and their sportsmanship. Once again, a large number of Quairading supporters were there for encouragement and to witness some great bowling. Back L - R: Rohan Hadlow, Steven Wilton, Stephen Bartlett, Greg Sinclair, David Chandler, Jeff Dalton, Rod Haythornthwaite, Vincent Hadlow. Seated L - R: Paul O’Hare, Mathew Hudson, Michael Van Elden, George Anderson, Chris Squiers, Jim Gimbel, Murray Taylor, Scott Richards (via Quairading Bowling Club on Facebook).

From the Editor
After a pretty packed couple of months, we’ll wind down slightly through April but by no means will we stop completely!
On Wednesday 1st April we are (not foolishly!) hosting Enrika Grogan from Mind Your Money for an “Understanding Financials” Workshop for small businesses and organisations if we get a few more registrations. It’s a slightly vague workshop premise, and of course has potential to cover some dull topics BUT Enrika is an incredible resource in the Wheatbelt so if you have any finance and bookkeeping related queries, feel free to register your attendance to come along and you might just snag some one-onone support too.
Pristine Hearing will be back again later in the month and Kings Park Fashions will be in the building on Wednesday 22nd April with their new winter styles and Hot Stitches and the Art Group are always here every Tuesday, ready and waiting for newcomers to drop in on.
We’d love to see all quiz night lovers (and haters) fill the Quairading Town Hall on Friday 24th April for the QFNC Quiz Night! Channelling all the fun, nostalgia and competitiveness of quiz nights gone by, there will be 10 themed rounds of 10 questions each, head to head challenges, new games and heaps of opportunities to pick up extra points for your team. Bring your own nibbles/dinner, buy some drinks from the fundraising bar and get around it. If you’re in need of a team, let me know and I (Quiz Master Jill) can help connect you with others in need of you!
We’re also continuing to see the CRC used in all the ways it should be people popping in for a quick print job, a bit of tech help, or just a chat. It’s a good reminder that even when things feel a little quieter on the events front, the day-to-day support and connection is still ticking along in the background. If there’s something you’ve been meaning to ask or try, don’t hesitate to drop in.
Wishing all readers and safe, relaxing and affordable Easter break.

BEFOREYOUBURN–CALLDFES
With the implementation of the Emergency WA app, all large burns within the Shire of Quairading must now be reported to DFES prior to commencement. Please notify DFES on 1800 198 140 or 9395 9209 at least 15 minutes before starting any burn larger than a small pile or campfire. If you are unavailable any month just inform the office and you won’t be rostered on.
If you feel able to volunteer please contact the office at the hospital on 9645 2222.

Mrs Kym Benson and Mrs Kelsie Squiers joined in on the excitement to see all the swimmers perform at their absolute best.
All our swimmers are very fortunate to benefit from our fabulous coaches Jess Richards and Renee Anderson, who take them through their paces, and continually work on their technique to become more proficient at their strokes, every, single, week.

Lenten Labyrinth –
APilgrimage from Perth to Quairading
Around forty-five parishioners fromAnglicans Together in Scarborough, Woodlands and Wembley Downs, on Friday, 27th March, travelled together on a Lenten pilgrimage to Quairading. The visit centred on walking the Labyrinth at St Faith’sAnglican Church and exploring the town.
Their journey paused unexpectedly when the bus overheated on the way up Greenmount; however, a replacement bus came quickly. Upon arrival in Quairading, they were met by the Reverend Canon Philip Raymont, local priest, and the parishioners of St Faith’s. A morning tea of scones with jam and cream greeted them also.
Following morning tea, a short service of welcome was conducted introducing the pilgrims to the Labyrinth. Despite the intense sunshine, most pilgrims embraced the opportunity to walk the Labyrinth, offering a simple yet powerful moment of contemplation, followed by the opportunity for silent prayer in St Faith’s Church.
Adelightful and well organised lunch was had at the Quairading Hotel where local identity Shirley Stacey introduced the visitors to some of the town’s history before escorting them to the Quairading Museum where several local residents kindly guided them through the exhibits, sharing stories that brought the town and its residents’history vividly to life.
One pilgrim in a report for the Diocesan newsletter “The Messenger” wrote that the pilgrimage offered not only a moment of spiritual reflection but also a deeper appreciation of the warmth, faith, and richness of this small rural parish. They noted that the people of St Faith’s are always delighted to welcome visitors and church groups; you won’t be disappointed.

THE BULLS ARE BACK FOR 26!
The boys have been sweating it out for a few months now with a start on Saturday January 17 at City Beach, where a couple of youngsters hopefully learnt to have a quiet night before training! The Perth crew are currently training with 4 other country clubs on a Wednesday night with anywhere between 8-10 of our players making up the 35 odd players each week. Shaun Simpson has been flogging the boys during the week in town with 25 or so players turning up midweek and again on Friday night as we lead into the season proper in a couple of weeks. Numbers have been good however we can always cater for more whether you are too old or not.
We have lost a number of experienced and very valuable players in the off season but we welcome back as travellers Ben Rushforth, Brayden Andrews, Ryan Jarman, Harry McCracken and Kye Benson whilst welcoming Steve Miller, Rory Jarman, Isaac Bradford, Will Hughes and Ryan Patience. Along with the travellers we obviously go in with a number of local stars that continue to show how good the breeding in town is.
Due to weddings (there is a ban next pre-season on anyone getting married), cricket going so well and way too many social functions, the time together as a team has been very hard to find. Isaac, the Jarmans, Kye and Steve made the trek to Quairading to train recently on a Friday night and then we got to have our one and only scratch match last Friday in Bruce Rock. It was great to have nearly 30 players turn up and blow the cobwebs out and the year ahead is looking quite exciting especially seeing some of the youngsters that have put in a lot during the off season to get themselves in tip top condition. There were some very exciting pieces of play on Friday night and hopefully as match fitness kicks in these become the norm.
It would be great to see a large Quairading support group in attendance at our first game in Northam followed up by our first home game against Beverley where we would love to introduce our team to our faithful followers just after quarter time in the reserves, so if you would like to know who is who please join us outside the changerooms during the ressies.
Congrats to Braydo and Caitlin on their recent big day and good luck to Braden and Belinda for this weekend.
Let’s go Bulls!
Gardening in the Wheatbelt
Written by Carmela Kriszyk of Eaglewood Farm
Well! I did jinx it didn’t I!! There I was skiting about not having had heat waves during summer and bang the first two weeks of March with most days over 35 degrees. It has been grueling to say the least and plants will take some time to recover. We keep on hoping that cooler weather is on its way and that a tropical low will bring some much needed rain to put some moisture into the ground but we will have to wait and see. Fingers crossed.
The April meeting of the QGLG is on Friday the 24th at the CRC starting at 9:30am. For this meeting we will be discussing the preparation, preserving and storing of garden produce. Joining our group will always be interesting and informative so do join.
All gardeners are aware of the importance of bees in the pollination of many of the fruits and vegetables grown in home gardens. In fact, about 25% of food produced in Australia is produced in urban agricultural systems. To support the work that both native and the European honey bees do, it is important to meet their basic needs so that they will be attracted to our gardens. They need nectar, pollen and water. Very simple needs which can also be simple to meet. While many vegetables don’t have flowers with ample nectar or pollen they still need to be pollinated and this is where providing flowers in the vegetable patch ensures a large number of bees for good pollination.
Flowering plants in the vegetable patch can be both native and exotic, both perennial and annual. In our arid zone summer gardens, when there aren’t many flowering plants, bees will still find some flowers on Eremophila, Statice, Pelargonium and Oleander plants. Starting in late autumn almost all native shrubs and trees will start flowering and continue flowering into spring and early summer. The list of exotic perennial plants which flower in autumn and winter into spring and early summer, even in our arid conditions, is almost endless and also includes many herbs.
But my favourites are the annuals which brighten my patch every year with very little input from me. I have a fence line covered with sweet peas that self-seed every year. All I do is add a packet of seeds just to introduce some variety of colour and parentage and throw a little organic fertilizer over the seedlings. There is another line of Calendulas which runs along the Asparagus bed. These beauties of bright orange and yellow are always buzzing with bees. Again, these self-seed every year and all I do is fertilise and collect the dried plants after they have dropped all their seeds. Many years ago, next to the cherry trees, I sowed some Borage and now this too comes up every year and in such numbers that its exuberance has to be severely curtailed. Others annuals worth considering are Alyssum, Poppy and Nasturtium.
April in the Garden
It’s time to – add compost, manure, and pelletised fertilizer to the vegetable beds; repot cuttings that have been growing in small pots and harden up others for a
few weeks before planting them out in garden beds; take cuttings of soft-wooded perennials like curry leaf, rosemary, thyme, coleus, impatiens, lavender and lemon verbena, I did mine earlier and the majority have survived in improvised greenhouse conditions; feed roses once daytime temperatures come down to around 30 degrees; also then aerate, use a wetting agent and fertilise lawns with chicken pellets and dolomite lime while the soil is still warm; break summer dormancy of cyclamen plants by watering with a light liquid feed; propagate succulents; liquid feed winter flowering zygocactus; lift and divide crowded clumps of hippeastrums, replant and spread the bulbs to other pots or friends; being ever hopeful, clean out gutters and drains in time for rain; continue pruning fruit trees while we still have dry weather and finally dig up sweet potatoes.
Sow – after the first deep rains soak and sow sweet pea seeds; winter crops of root vegetables can be sown now, always after rain is predicted
Plant – all winter vegetable seedlings can be planted now, but still with the rain caveat.
Harvest – with all the stone fruit almost finished, only the Yellow Queen peaches left and they are not very good this year because it has been so dry; we are now picking the first of the pomme fruits, pears and early apples are being harvested; and also, grapes are ripening beautifully, the globe grapes were the first, and we now have the crimson seedless and the muscatels. The English mulberries have been luscious even though the tree is only a few years old. The harvest from the vegetable garden is much reduced this year because we chose to prioritise our water use to specific plants so we have had no lettuce and only silver beet for our chickens and other fowl and for ourselves we have grown tomatoes, capsicums, eggplant, carrots, watermelon, cucumber, zucchini, corn, pumpkin, beans, chilli and basil.
The last word –“Don’t garden to impress, don’t take it too seriously it must, after all, be fun.” - Advice from Michael Mc Coy garden designer
Quairading Sub Centre Update
Unfortunately, due to the predicted wet weather the sausage sizzle for 28th March will need to be postponed. We will advise of a more suitable date ASAP.
But in good news, our second new Ambulance has arrived! After having the last 2 vans for over 12 years, we have splurged a little and purchased 2 brand new Mercedes Sprinter Ambulances! We can’t wait to hold our BBQ and let everyone have a good look through them!
We received a very special ambulance call in March... The Paint Quairading REaD red egg was ready to hatch and needed some help! Carol & Kath raced to the Quairading Hall & gave them a helping hand! A big thank you to all involved, we are so glad to have helped you hatch the egg!

Easter is upon us! The stores are filled with chocolate animals, chocolate eggs and hot cross buns.
In Europe Easter comes at the end of winter and in cold places there is an amazing change as the snow melts and plants spring up. Within weeks the drab of winter is replaced by greenery and flowers. Baby animals, born in winter, leave the burrows. Trees that were bare in winter put out new leaves.
In Perth this season is when the drab dry browns of summer are replaced by the fresh green leaves of autumn. In Quairading there may not be much green until May but farmers, if they have enough fuel, are putting in seed in the sure hope that the rains will come. So even in this ‘land down under’ Easter is a time of new life.
Some people feel that this confuses Easter, it is not about chickens or rabbits or eggs. Doesn’t the Easter Bunny distract us from the good news about Jesus? Others feel that the joy of new life is a good reminder that Jesus gives us new life. As I step out into my garden in this cooler season I can feel the freshness of the dew in the morning. The plants that have been in survival mode during the heatwaves of summer are more soft and green.
Some people live their lives in survival mode, like my plants during summer or like the bare trees in a snowy winter. The message of Easter is that Jesus came so that we can do more than survive, we can have abundant life.
Happy Easter.
