FROM THE EDITOR Ignoring the odd high thirty-something degree day; how nice is the cool change in the air! The cooler feeling means it must almost be the Easter long weekend, and school holidays, and the start of winter sports season, and time for dry gardens to bounce back, and time for endless days and weeks of spraying out thriving weeds in the paddocks, and, bonfire season!! March was full of excellent activities here at the Quairading CRC. Read all about our Clay Mug Workshop and our Creative & Meditative Afternoon on pages 29 and 30, respectively. While each of these activities appealed to only a small niche, that small niche supported them hard and had an absolute ball—which means we had an absolute ball too! We also held a Welcome to Town Sundowner (the first in many years) on Thursday 11th March. With nearly 30 people joining us for a drink and a nibble, it was so dang heart-warming to hear all the fabulous reasons as to why newbies and locals alike choose to live here, and it was so great to put new names to new faces. Welcome to you all! If you missed it, pop into the Quairading CRC sometime to collect a Welcome Pack. We’ve also had the team from Wheatbelt Aboriginal Health Service in the building each Tuesday for the last month, providing the HEAL (Healthy Eating Activity and Lifestyle) program to our local community. These sessions include an hour of gentle exercise (conveniently utilising the Quairading Community Gym) and an hour of lifestyle education. Judging by giggles and huge smiles that emerge at the end of each session, I think it’s safe to say this program is a huge hit! For more info or to get involved, contact Danika via 9690 2888. We’re super excited for our upcoming School Holiday Mini Science Fair on Friday 16th April! Working collaboratively with the school, a visit from Scitech was identified as a pretty great thing to spend some grant money on—and with a successful application to WA Youth Week funding, we did just that! And more! Check out the flyer on page 15 and be sure to book your spot ASAP (the morning session is just about sold out!). Lastly, flip your calendar a few pages and save Friday 12th November for an afternoon out with Lou Kelman’s Big Purple Undies—we’ll share more info in like, six months. Adios. VACCINES Covid-19 Vaccination The Covid-19 Vaccination Programme is being rolled out in partnership with the Australian Government in a phased approach. Quairading Medical Practice has been registered & approved. As the vaccines are rolled out to the Surgery, we will receive a limited number of stock each week. There are a number of eligible categories for the vaccine. We will endeavour to cover all categories in an orderly fashion and will advertise accordingly. If you are over 80 years of age and would like the COVID Vaccine, Please phone the Practice on 9645 1210 and register yourself.
Flu Vaccine Government Funded stock has been ordered. Eligibility for Government Funded Flu Vaccine include: 6 Months – 5 Years Aboriginal Medical Risk Condition Pregnant Women Over 65 Years Private stock has arrived. Mug–nificent clay workshop! Written by Jill Hayes
Through the power of Instagram, earlier this year we came across one Kaitlyn Elsegood—a Fremantle based creative who has been spending lots of time out in the Wheatbelt, including a stint as Artist in Residence at Beverley Station Arts last year. One of Kaitlyn’s self-taught specialities is facilitating beginners clay workshops, so we slid into her DMs (sent her a direct message) and were delighted that she was delighted to pop over to Quairading to host a workshop in the fabulous Art Space out the back of the Quairading CRC. With the coffee machine running at full pelt, 15 of us spent 4 hours on Sunday 7th March learning how to roll, smooth, cut, shape and mould clay into some resemblance of a mug (many were more like a handle-less vase, or “other nondescript vessel”). The caffeine was well needed - as it turns out working with clay is slightly harder than playing with playdough in Pre-Primary (the only comparable activity many of us had prior experience with!) - but wildly enjoyable non the less. We decorated our “mugs” with layers of painted on glaze and left them for firing at a later date—as you can see from the photos below, our styles all turned out fascinatingly different! Participants travelled from Cunderdin, Tammin, Kellerberrin and even Perth to Quairading to try something new in a relaxed setting, that worked around busy work and life schedules— huge thank you to all who came along, and a huge thank you to Teresa and the Quairading Creative Arts Society who are, as I write, allowing us access to their kiln to fire these beauties.

Creative & Meditative Afternoon Written by Tamara Stacey The aim and focus of this event was to impart some tools and strategies to help reduce stress and increase energy levels, and boy did it deliver. I was eagerly anticipating this event, especially the elements of the afternoon that I had never experienced. An intimate group of 9 were under the tutelage of jack of all trades and master of many, Janet Robertson, (racking up her 3rd Quairading CRC workshop I might add) for 4 hours one Saturday afternoon not too long ago. I woke up on the morning of feeling far from fresh, yet the instant the workshop started my batteries seemed to start re-charging, 4 hours and 6 energy balls later I was motivated enough to sneak in some last minute laps at the pool before it closes at the end of this month (and summer leaves me, winter comes and I die a little inside). The day flowed as follows: Energy ball making demonstration Mandala Drawing (who’d have thought doodling could look so pretty?) Stretched out with some yoga Sound bath; Janet graciously allowed us to have a play with her Tibetan singing bowls, deer skin drum and symbols as well as bathe us in their good vibrations. Finished off by zenning out with some Tai Chi fundamentals- I can’t wait to sidle up to the Tai Chi pro’s in the park next time before sulking off in shame because it’s way harder than it looks! ….by which point we were famished and ready to eat those energy balls. We shared some healthy snacks and a cuppa before we all floated home.

Quairading District High School News... Thank you from the Year 5/6 Class On Saturday the 13th of March, the year 5/6 class hosted an Election Day sausage sizzle to raise some money to help with the costs of their upcoming camp. We had a great day and the sizzle was a huge hit! We want to thank everyone who came and purchased a sausage sizzle and all our volunteers, staff, the P&C and the Quairading Co-Op for food donations that made this day possible, we couldn't have done it without you! Our camp will be in term 4 to Dare Adventure Camp in Dwellingup. We hope to have some more fundraising opportunities in the coming months.
On Friday the 5th March, we were fortunate enough to receive a donation of 24 mountain bikes and helmets from John Curtain College of the Arts as a part of the Teacher Development Schools (TDS). TDS initiative acknowledges teachers learn best from other teachers across schools, networks and professional learning communities. We’d like to say a big ‘thank you’ for the donation—we feel very lucky. Hopefully you’ll see our students out and about on the bikes during the year!

Our students did a fantastic job of representing QDHS - demonstrating our 4 core values of Pride, Grace, Quality and Respect. Gardening in the Wheatbelt Written by Carmela Kriszyk of Eaglewood Farm The start of autumn lived up to its reputation with cooler temperatures and real rain. And even though we had a burst of summer again at the end of the third week I hope that the indications that cooler weather is on its way do come true. The rain lifted the spirits of this gardener and her garden. Every plant has put on a new spurt of life, the roses are blooming, the pumpkin patch has covered twice the area allotted to it, the artichoke rhizomes have put up new pups and all the plants are more vibrant and happy. I’m reminded that during summer all the watering I do only really helps to keep the plants alive during the hibernation and it’s only after rain that they respond and grow. The rain is laden with nitrogen which the plant leaves soak up directly and the roots get a boost from the extra moisture and revitalized soil biology. Don’t forget everyone is invited to come to the second meeting of the garden lovers club, come to Quairading Garden & Gifts on Friday 26th at 10am. Tips of the Month 1. Reduce water use. Even when you are using stored rain water it is important to reduce water waste and of course when water is metered, a bill every three months reminds us that water waste costs money literally. So here are the basic tips for watering: a) water deeply, acquaint yourself with the specific water requirements for each plant, some plants wilt a little and let you know they need water others wilt only in the middle of the day but are really fine and don’t need to be watered. When you water deeply you not only give the plant enough water to last it for several days but it also means that the plant roots are not stressed and can continue growing until the next watering occurs. Using sprinklers and especially misting sprinklers can be very inefficient. Much is lost in fine droplets blown around by the wind and is evaporated even before it hits the ground and unless you actually check how much of the water has penetrated into the soil you will not know how well your plants are being watered. b) water before a hot spell, if you know that there is going to be a hot spell coming water either that morning early or even better late the evening before. This way the plants have time to absorb the moister take it up into the leaves and so be ready to transpire without drying out and withering. How and when you apply water to your plants can make a difference! 2. Reduce the use of pesticides and herbicides. Now here I am being practical. I certainly am not in favour of not using herbicides in large open areas where weeds can abound and make the garden look unsightly. In the Wheatbelt some of us live on farms where areas around the home garden need to be weeded so that those weeds don’t spread into the ornamental garden, the fruit tree area or the vegetable garden. Weeding these areas by hand is impractical. At Eaglewood Farm we use Glyphosate in the areas beyond the established garden and orchard and we keep the base of new trees clear by spraying with Glyphosate to kill existing perennial weeds and pre emergent to prevent winter grass from coming up. We use pre emergent in areas where we are going
to plant new gardens or trees so that the new plants have less competition during their establishment. Always use appropriate coverings, gloves, long sleeves and trousers and masks when using these products. Remember if you can smell it, it is in your system. So how do we reduce the use of these herbicides? Ground covers do a great job of stopping weed germination, wind breaks around the garden reduce the weeds seeds that the wind can bring into your garden and weeding before the existing weeds set seed can reduce the amount of seed in the soil considerably. In the established garden hand weeding or the use of a Dutch hoe isn’t such a chore especially on those lovely winter days when physical activity is easy. Also the use of mulch in the established garden makes for fewer weeds and easy pulling for those few which do come up. We use no pesticides as such in our garden. Apart from Eco Oil, Naturalure in milk bottles to lure in fruit flies if there and Success Extra (all organic controls) nothing else is used in the vegetable garden and orchard. We especially don’t use yellow sticky paper which kills beneficial insects as well as pests. The only pests we fight with all guns blazing are ants. And for them we use everything!!!!! And I might add we don’t succeed. It’s time to… Sow – Everything you want to flower in winter and spring can be sown now including bulbs, herbs, vegetables, annual and perennial plant seeds. Paper daisies and sweet pea can be sown during April. Plant – All winter vegetables should be put in now, except for peas, broad beans and onions. After the next rain event all native trees and shrubs should be planted so that they have all winter to establish a good root system which will help them survive their first summer. Strawberry plants can be propagated from runners now. Harvest – At Eaglewood Farm in April we pick green olives for pickling, apples, pears, quinces, grapes, rhubarb, pumpkins, chillies, capsicums, egg plants, beans and lettuces. I don’t often mention our herbs but whereas most are there all year round the basil and tarragon are only summer herbs and are coming to an end now as the cooler nights set in. Things to do – Roses are at their peak autumn flowering now. Keep the water up to them until regular rain falls. Finish summer pruning of deciduous fruiting trees during a dry spell. All evergreen shrubs can be transplanted now, except natives, which don’t like being uprooted. Feed the lawn while the soil temperature is still in the high teens. Take semi hardwood cuttings of Pelargoniums, Azaleas, Viburnums, Olives, Caper berries, Oleanders, Lavenders, Correas and other many native plants. The last word – Gardening: cheaper than therapy and, you get tomatoes! PAGE 37

Gala Day Our Gala Day was held on 6th November 2020. There were 22 Teams of 4 with 5 Leagues, 15 Country Towns and 2 Metropolitan Teams represented. It was a hugely successful day with lots of friendly games played, raffles to win and a wonderful meal organised by Marie Killian and her helpers. Winners – Pingelly: B Wallace, P Patterson, M Ryan and E McCahon with 12 points + 37 shots. Runners Up – Narembeen: A Cowan, M Campbell, H Copeland and C Crowd with 12 points + 21 shots. Thank you to everyone who helped in any way. League League Pairs were played at Tammin in October. We had 3 pairs playing with Phyllis Brown and Dallas Brown coming second. Congratulations. Well done to Donna Hayes being selected for the Interleague Team. Unfortunately, this event was cancelled due to Covid. League Fours were played in Cunderdin in December. We had 2 Teams and 2 Players in a Composite Side participating. Well Done to Marie Killian, Donna Hayes, Chris Gimbel and Chris Hadlow on winning the day. Our 9 players went on to represent East Avon in the Interleague Fours play in Merredin. This event was won by the Goldfields League. Donna Hayes has been selected for the Interzone Event to be held in April. Congratulations to Donna and thank you to Liz Anderson for your work being East Avon Selector and now Team Manager for the Zone Team at Merredin in April. Bill Granger’s Green Herb Risotto with Raw Summer Salad No one has done more to promote Australia’s great produce and delicious food than Bill Granger. The much-loved chef has 19 restaurants around the globe and is firing like Crepe Suzette. In the 20 years since Bill published his first book of recipes, Sydney Food, the world has fallen in love with this joyfully casual Australian way of eating. Now Bill’s back with Australian Food (Murdoch Books), a gold mine of Australian culinary delights that would make an ideal gift for the foodie in your life. Here’s Bill’s recipe for Green Herb Risotto with Raw Summer Salad Serves 4 “I’ve always loved the idea of nasturtium leaves in a salad. They grow everywhere, and so easily. In the early days of bills our chef used to pick them on the way to work, and now I always grow them in the garden. The risotto uses a simple but clever method – the green herb mixture is blended and then stirred into the cooked risotto – that way the colours and flavours stay completely fresh and the greens aren’t cooked at all. It’s almost like saying risotto is good for you. In fact, because the butter and cheese help you absorb the vitamins from the greens, this is practically spa food!”
Ingredients
Raw summer salad 5 asparagus spears, sliced into ribbons 1 zucchini (courgette), sliced into ribbons 6 Brussels sprouts or 2 kale leaves, finely shredded 12 nasturtium leaves 1 tablespoon lemon juice 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil Risotto 50g butter 2 French shallots, finely chopped 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1½ tablespoons thyme 400g risotto rice 200ml white wine 1.2 litres warm vegetable stock Zest and juice of ½ lemon 3 tablespoons grated parmesan Green herb purée 50g parsley 50g baby spinach 50g rocket 50ml olive oil PAGE 44
Method
To make the raw summer salad, toss together the asparagus, zucchini, sprouts or kale and nasturtium leaves. Whisk together the lemon juice and oil with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to make a citrus dressing. Toss the salad with the dressing and set aside until ready to serve. To make the risotto, heat half the butter in a pan over low–medium heat. Gently cook the shallots, garlic and thyme in the butter until the shallots are soft and translucent. Add the rice and cook, stirring well, for a minute or so, until all the rice is coated in hot butter. Add the white wine and stir until it has all been absorbed. Slowly stir in the warm stock, a ladleful at a time, stirring continuously until it has been absorbed before adding the next ladle – this will take around 20 –25 minutes. To make the green herb purée, mix all the ingredients in a blender until thick and smooth. Season to taste. Stir the green herb purée into the risotto. Finish with the remaining butter, a squeeze of lemon juice and the parmesan. Serve with the salad, sprinkled with lemon zest.

Warrior Wellbeing Keeping an Eye on the Crown Jewels The title might suggest that this article relates to a security firm engaged at Buckingham Palace, however what we’re actually talking about is monitoring an aspect of our sexual health, specifically testicular cancer. Testicular cancer is a relatively rare cancer, however it seems to be becoming more prevalent and is the most common cancer in men aged between 20 and 35. It’s ironic that blokes will quite often joke or boast about their tackle but will find it very difficult to discuss the same appendage with their GP. Becoming comfortable and familiar with our penis and testicles is the first step in being able to notice any changes over time. The first thing that some blokes notice (and get concerned about) is that one testicle may hang lower than the other. This is perfectly normal and is actually an evolutionary trait that prevents them bashing into each other like some runaway desk ornament when we walk or run. Testicular cancer usually affects one testicle. There are some symptoms to keep an eye out for which shouldn’t be ignored: a feeling of heaviness in the scrotum a lump in either testicle enlargement of a testicle dull aching in the abdomen or groin a sudden collection of fluid in the scrotum tenderness and/or enlargement of the breast tissue A key point to remember is, initially, and in some cases even in the later stages, testicular cancer might not cause any pain or discomfort. A small painless lump is the most common symptom, and if you have any of these symptoms, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you definitely have cancer. These symptoms can also indicate a range of benign (non-cancerous) causes, but they should always be checked by a doctor.
Because some of these symptoms are not always glaringly obvious, it's important to selfcheck your testicles. The best way to examine your testicles is after a warm bath or shower and it’s a fairly straight forward process: Cup your testicles in the palm of one hand. Pay attention to the size and weight. This helps you identify any future changes. Locate the epididymis. This is the tube that carries sperm to the penis. It can be felt at the top-rear of each testicle. This lump is meant to be there. Examining each testicle in more detail by rolling it between your thumb and fingers, press gently but firmly to feel for any lumps, swellings or variations in firmness. Repeat this examination every couple of months or so. The outlook for treatment of testicular cancer is very good. With early diagnosis, 96% of patients can be completely cured. Even after the cancer has spread, up to 80% of men can still be cured. If you do find anything unusual, don't wait for it to disappear or start throbbing - see your doctor.
