Migration added 171,000 people to the UK's population last year, almost half the number seen in 2024, according to new Home Office data.

The figure is at its lowest level since 2012, excluding the Covid pandemic - but Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has said there was still "more to do".

The data also reveals that 93,525 people claimed asylum in the UK in the year to March 2026 - down 12% on the year prior, but still more than double that seen just before the pandemic.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the statistics showed the government was "restoring order and control to our borders", while her counterpart Chris Philp argued that Labour needed to "go further".

Queen Elizabeth II was "very keen" for her son Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor to become a trade envoy in 2000, according to newly released files.

The files relating to Mountbatten-Windsor's trade envoy role were released by the government in response to a request by Sir Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats.

The Queen wanted her son to take on a "prominent role in the promotion of national interests", thenchief executive of British Trade International Sir David Wright said in a memo to then-foreign secretary Robin Cook, dated February 2000. Mountbatten-Windsor acted as the UK's special representative for international trade and investment until 2011.

Sir Ed made a "humble address" in Parliament on 24 February, asking the government to release all papers relating to the creation of the position for Mountbatten-Windsor.

His request came just days after Mountbatten-Windsor

was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office relating to the alleged sharing of confidential material with late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. He was later released under investigation.

Mountbatten-Windsor has always rejected any wrongdoing in his associations with Epstein and denied any personal gain from his role as trade envoy. One of the letters

released as part of the documents expressed that Mountbatten-Windsor had a preference for visiting "the more sophisticated countries".

The letter is dated 25 January 2000 and is written by British diplomat Kathryn Colvin, but it is not clear who the letter was for.

It includes notes from a meeting between Colvin and Captain Neil Blair,

Mountbatten-Windsor's then-private secretary.

The letter states that Prince Andrew was "particularly good on high-tech matters, trade, youth (including primary schools and outward bound projects), cultural events, with a preference for ballet rather than theatre, the Commonwealth and military and foreign affairs".

One line reads: "Captain Blair particularly asked that The Duke of York should not

be offered golfing functions abroad. This was a private activity and if he took his clubs with him he would not play in any public sense."

Another of the documents released on Thursday is an internal telegram to staff of British Trade International - an organisation set up by the government to promote trade - that confirmed Andrew's appointment as a "special representative".

Sent on 25 September 2001, it reads: "We envisage a programme overseas based around two major regional visits per year. Other visits overseas will be considered, depending on budget and other constraints."

The telegram advised of the need for "careful and sometimes strict media management", and "initial proposals should contain the outline of a media strategy".

The files, shared by the Department for Business and Trade, includes a foreword which explains that the government "acknowledges that there is a long-standing convention of confidentiality in relation to communications with or on behalf of the Sovereign".

Cheaper theme park tickets and children's meals as VAT to be cut for some attractions this summer

Ticket prices for families at various attractions such as theme parks, zoos and museums will be cheaper during the summer holidays through a cut to VAT, the chancellor has said.

Rachel Reeves announced a temporary reduction in VAT from 20% to 5% from when schools break up in Scotland at the end of June until children return to classrooms in England, Wales and Northern Ireland on 1 September.

The discount, which will be up to businesses to pass on to customers, will also apply to children's entry to cinemas, soft play and theatres, as well as children's meals in restaurants and cafes.

The VAT cut was part of a flurry of government policy announcements aimed at easing cost of living pressures.

As well as the cut in VAT on tickets for family days out, the chancellor announced free bus journeys for under16s in England in August and cuts to import taxes

on some basic foods under a "Great British Summer Savings" campaign.

"I recognise that what matters for families is not just getting by, but being able to enjoy time together without worrying about the next bill," Reeves said, adding it was also about supporting the hospitality sector.

The scheme announcement comes as households are

experiencing rising fuel prices at the pumps, and are bracing themselves for higher energy and food bills due to the war in Iran disrupting supply chains.

Ofcom has criticised TikTok and YouTube, saying in a new report their content feeds are "not safe enough" for children.

The findings follow the regulator's call for stronger action on children's online safety, and said Meta, Snap and Roblox had each agreed to stronger anti-grooming measures.

Ofcom added it would share concerns that sites were not effectively enforcing minimum age rules with the government, whose consultation on whether to ban social media for under16s soon ends.

YouTube said it worked with child safety experts to provide "industryleading, age-appropriate" experiences for children.

TikTok said it was "very disappointing" Ofcom had failed to acknowledge its safety features.

Ofcom's criticism is part

of a new report into how five large social media and video platforms responded to its demand for stronger protections for children.

"Notably, TikTok and YouTube failed to commit to any significant changes to reduce harmful content being served to children, maintaining their feeds are already safe for children," it

said.

"Our wealth of evidence, published today, suggests they are still not safe enough."

In response, TikTok and YouTube pointed to safety features already in place on their apps - including TikTok stopping direct messaging for under-16s and YouTube's

short-form video timer, where parents can set time limits for the scrolling Shorts feed.

Social media consultant and analyst Matt Navarra said the criticism illustrated a shift to seeing online harms as "a product problem".

"The old debate was, 'did the platform remove harmful

content quickly enough?' - the new one has shifted towards, 'why did the platform show it to a child in the first place?'" he said. Ofcom has faced frequent calls to take stronger, speedier action to enforce the UK's online safety rules to protect children onlinewith some critics saying it has failed to do so quickly enough.

Speaking on the BBC's Today programme on Thursday, Ofcom chief executive Dame Melanie Dawes defended its actions but said she knew the job was "not done" yet.

"We're talking about a twenty-year culture at Silicon Valley of not taking safety seriously; you can't change that overnight," she said.

Tui ends sponsorship of Channel 4's Married at First Sight

Holiday company Tui has ended its sponsorship of three versions of Married at First Sight on Channel Four - the UK, Australia and US versions.

Tui told BBC News: "Following the broadcast of the Panorama programme and discussion with Channel 4, we have taken the decision to end our sponsorship of Married at First Sight."

Tui said it was "pausing" its sponsorship activity on Monday, after two women told the BBC they were raped during the filming of one of Channel 4's biggest shows, Married at First Sight UK, while a third described an allegation of a nonconsensual sex act.

TV critic Scott Bryan said on Thursday that although nonUK versions "do not have anything to do with these recent allegations, it shows how the reputation of MAFS brand itself is being affected by this news".

The women featured in Panorama said the show did not do enough to protect them.

Lawyers for CPL, the independent production company that makes the UK version of the show, said its welfare system was "gold standard" and industryleading, and that it acted appropriately in all these cases. Bryan said it was "a big deal" for Tui to pull out of the Australian editionsometimes called MAFS

Oz - as well as the UK one, because "it's a hugely popular and lucrative show for Channel 4, especially with younger viewers".

Channel 4 was aware of some allegations before broadcast, and all the episodes featuring the women had been available on its streaming service.

Desk report: Eleven members of staff have been sacked by an NHS trust for inappropriately accessing medical records of the Nottingham attacks victims.

Nottingham students Barnaby Webber and Grace O'Malley-Kumar, and grandfather Ian Coates, were stabbed to death on 13 June 2023 by Valdo Calocane, who was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 2020.

On Thursday, Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) NHS Trust confirmed it had dismissed 11 members of staff, while 12 had received final written warnings and two had first written warnings.

The families of Barnaby, Grace and Ian welcomed the action by the trust but called the development a "kick in the teeth" amid an ongoing inquiry examining the attacks.

The trust said it had informed Nottinghamshire Police and the Information Commissioner's Office of the outcomes of the investigation.

A public statutory inquiry, which is examining the

lead-up to the attacks and decisions and actions taken in the aftermath, is ongoing in London.

It emerged in 2025 that staff at the trust had accessed the victims' records without need, prompting an internal investigation.

NUH confirmed the staff involved in the investigations included doctors, nurses, registered medical professionals, and administrative and clerical employees. The families of Barnaby, Grace and Ian were

informed of the outcome of the investigations this week, the trust added.

Further investigations are ongoing into inappropriate access, the trust said, including into the files of the surviving victims of the attacks, Wayne Birkett, Sharon Miller and Marcin Gawronski.

The bereaved families told the BBC they were glad action was being taken, but called for further transparency from the trust and other organisations.

James Coates, one of Ian's three sons, said he believed the initial investigation by NUH and subsequent outcome to be "the tip of the iceberg".

"Morbid curiosity and inappropriate voyeurism have become a huge issue, not just with the NHS, but with the Nottinghamshire Police force.

"The council, the mental health trust, the probationary and prison service amongst others.

"Unfortunately, the numbers

continue to grow with each update we receive, and it is a huge kick in the teeth when we are already down," he said.

Grace's father, Dr Sanjoy Kumar, said: "Grace was a medical student and attended lectures at the Queen's Medical Centre (run by the trust).

"One day she would have qualified and started her chosen profession in Nottingham, treating the people of Nottingham, working in the NHS hospitals there.

"This news brings enormous hurt and adds to the pain of losing our beloved daughter."

Barnaby's mother, Emma Webber, added: "I'm under no illusions that had it not been for the inquiry, and had it not been for the amount of noise and pressure that we families have put onto this hospital trust, the other [mental health] trust and other agencies, it would have never come forward, it would have never seen the light of day.

"Whilst I'm glad it has been addressed, it's certainly nowhere near closure."

Labour's Andy Burnham has said national politics has reached a "dangerous place" where "people in this country cannot afford a good life".

The Greater Manchester mayor, who is his party's candidate for the Makerfield by-election next month, told BBC Radio Manchester Britain had been "on the wrong path for 40 years".

Burnham was speaking in the first of a series of interviews with candidates from the major parties standing in the poll, which will take place on 18 June.

Asked why he was potentially stepping away from his mayor role, he said he believed "politics in this country is at a moment where we either change it or it really becomes quite, quite broken and people lose faith completely".

The 56-year-old, who held senior cabinet positions in the Tony Blair and Gordon Brown governments, left Westminster politics in 2017.

"The economy is smaller and we have weaker control of immigration. That is my view.

"However, I've not said that we should now focus on rejoining. You know, we had a vote, we shouldn't keep re-running the arguments linked to that vote."

He said instead, he wanted to see a "relentless" focus on domestic issues over the "next five or 10 years".

"Let's get this country functioning again, let's get the basics right for people," he continued.

"Focus here, get things sorted out here. Let's not worry then about our relationship with other places until we fix our own situation." Burnham was also asked about his views regarding the HS2 rail project, which has been repeatedly cut back from its original plan to extend into the North of England.

"The frustration I feel about that is massive," he said.

"This is a classic example of Whitehall trying to run things from 200 miles away... dictating to us [and] getting it so drastically wrong."

He was also asked whether he would approve extra funding to extend the line to Manchester - as well as building an underground station beneath the city's current Piccadilly hub - if he were become prime minister.

He said he had "put forward a different way of doing things that's more localwork from the ground up".

UK agrees £3.7bn trade deal with six Gulf states

The UK has struck a trade deal with a group of six Gulf states which it says will be worth £3.7bn to the economy.

The government said the deal with Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and United Arab Emirates (UAE) would remove an estimated £580m a year in tariffs from British exports to the region once fully implemented. It also said it would make it easier for British firms to expand and partner in the Gulf, which will support jobs. Activist groups have criticised the lack of detail on human rights and labour protections in the deal. But the deal was welcomed by Chris Southworth, secretary general of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) UK, as a "boost to business confidence".

The Conservatives, who began the negotiations for the deal when in government,

said it was "another major Brexit opportunity" which Labour risked "throwing away" because of what it saw as Labour's pro-EU stance.

British products that will have tariffs removed include cheddar cheese, butter and chocolate.

The trade deal between the UK and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is the third struck by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer's government, after those with India and South Korea. It is also the first deal between a G7 country and the GCC.

The government has also reached trade agreements with the US and EU.

Sir Keir said the GCC deal was a "huge win" for British workers and businesses.

Working people "will feel the benefits in the years ahead through higher wages and more opportunities".

Secretary Peter Kyle said: "At a time of increased instability, today's announcement sends a clear signal of confidence – giving UK exporters the certainty they need to plan ahead."

Chancellor Rachel Reeves said the deal was "proof we are backing British firms to compete and win globally". "This agreement is good for jobs, good for industry and ultimately good for consumers."

Speaking to BBC News, ICC UK's Chris Southworth said: "This is guaranteed market access, free flow of data, increased mobility. "This is good for growth, good for jobs, good for investment and excellent news for the UK economy." However, rights group Trade Justice Movement has said the deal "poses serious risks to human rights, labour protections, and climate action".

How measles unleashed a wave of suffering in Bangladesh

Desk report: Delirious with lingering fever after contracting measles a fortnight ago, one-year-old Yusuf could soon die from a disease he should be protected against.

Propped up by his mother Nafisa on a temporary intensive care bed so she can keep the nebuliser over his mouth, the tiny boy is one of thousands of Bangladeshi children struck down by the worst global measles outbreak in years.

For now, an IV drip and oxygen sustain his fragile, listless frame. But Yusuf – whose eyes have been bandaged over to help him sleep – has a bleak prognosis. It is, sadly, a common one in a country currently overwhelmed by measles.

An immunisation gap caused mainly by the overthrow of Bangladesh’s authoritarian government in 2024 provided the catalyst for an unprecedented surge in cases which has so far claimed at least 424 lives.

A tiny measles patient Credit: Simon Townsley/The Telegraph More than 55,000 infections have been recorded since mid-March, according to the country’s Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), and hospital wards are over capacity with critically ill children.

Most of the victims of the epidemic are under 10, with the highest concentration among under-fives. Last week, 11 children died from measles in less than 24 hours.

Over the course of a week in Bangladesh, I witnessed the harrowing suffering unleashed when a whole nation’s vaccine distribution infrastructure is disrupted by bureaucratic collapse. For places where vaccine hesitancy has led to smaller recent outbreaks, including in London and Birmingham, it provides a blunt reminder of measles’ potential seriousness.

In Bangladesh, until recently praised by the World Health Organization (WHO) for its immunisation coverage, the mortality rate among children infected with the virus is high because of complications linked to malnourishment and pneumonia.

The ward in which I find Yusuf is in a former shopping mall converted into a makeshift hospital during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Rarely used since, except during a seasonal uptick in dengue fever cases, the Dhaka North City Corporation hospital is managed by the Bangladeshi

military. It was repurposed for measles when the sprawling city’s Infectious Disease Hospital could no longer cope. Eerily empty walkways between wards are lined with shuttered shop units.

Our escort, a uniformed army officer, tells me that in less than six weeks they have admitted more than 3,000 measles patients. “I was here during Covid and the dengue crisis in 2023,” says nurse Nazma Khan, 40. “This feels more severe because all of the patients are children. It is pitiful to see them in such a condition. They cannot express their suffering.”

As with many on the intensive care ward, Yusuf, from Shariatpur, three hours outside the capital, is not receiving the treatment he needs as medical fees are too expensive for his family.

“Doctors have told me that his brain has probably been affected by the measles infection,” says terrified Nafisa, 22. “Every time I turn away, he seems to get worse. He has been in a daze for so many days now. His eyes cannot focus anymore; he can’t really eat or sleep.

“He missed the measles vaccine, which he should have got when he was nine months old. Now he is so desperately ill. I feel helpless. The treatment he requires we can only get at a private clinic, but that would cost us twice what my husband earns in a whole month, for just a single day.” The disparity between the healthcare haves and have-nots is underlined by a flicker of movement that catches my eye next to Yusuf’s bed, a tiny cockroach scampering across the floor. On our way in, I was shown a dedicated private intensive care room for VIP patients.

At a nearby bed, exhausted parents Abdur Rajjak, 34, and wife Joynab, 33, are struggling to cope with having three of their four children, aged eight, five and one, in the hospital with measles. Their five-yearold, Obaidulah, is being kept separately in an isolation ward.

“All of my children missed their measles vaccinations,” admits Abdur. “I regret it so much. Normally, we would not be here. We are the most concerned about our son. He is in a very severe condition. “Neither me nor my wife have really slept properly for ten days. It’s just the two of us. Our relatives are scared to come in because they don’t want to risk catching measles.”

As I walk around the ward, I am accosted by dozens of fearful parents. All seem equally shocked to be in this predicament so soon after what started out as a runny nose and high temperature.

Plastic bags stuffed with cough syrups and calamine lotion are scattered across the tiled floor. Some families eat rice and lentils from metal pots. Sanitation seems unavoidably ad-hoc.

Paediatric consultant Dr Faria Yasnim tells me there has been an “exponential increase” since children first arrived with measles rashes, the majority aged six to eight months.

“Usually, we would expect them to be protected by maternal antibodies passed on through breastfeeding,” she explains. “However, many of these babies’ mothers have also missed their vaccine, or they were too weak to breastfeed because of their poor diet. It is a scenario none of us have encountered before. Nearly all of the patients are critical and need oxygen.

“Often it is too late by the time they get here. The gap between infection and detection is too long.” Bangladesh’s deadly measles outbreak this year is extreme, but several other countries have also experienced recent surges that run contrary to the overall global downward trend towards elimination through herd immunity.

Dozens of children have died from measles in Yemen, the majority unvaccinated. Last year there were 214 deaths from the disease in the warravaged country.

In Pakistan, 71 paediatric deaths due to measles were recorded in the first four months of 2026. Health authorities there say the spike is driven by a backlog of children who missed routine vaccinations during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mexico is also undergoing an untimely acceleration in measles infection, which has triggered alarm ahead of the World Cup next month.

In the US, which is hosting the most games including all of England and Scotland’s group stage fixtures, WHO measles elimination status achieved 26 years ago is under threat from persistent outbreaks often triggered by anti-vaccine misinformation.

Eighty-five per cent of people infected in Utah this year had not received the standard two doses of the measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine.

Health authorities there suspect the virus might have been imported by foreign tourists.

Whereas the mortality rate from measles is approximately 1 in 5,000 in the UK, in Bangladesh there are around seven deaths for every 1,000 recorded cases during the ongoing outbreak.

Bangladesh is the only country in the world ranking in the top 10 for both population density and total population, making it ideal breeding ground for a highly contagious airborne virus spread by coughs and sneezes.

Until the uprising that toppled despotic former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh prided itself on its strong childhood vaccination programme.

According to the British Medical Journal (BMJ), the country maintained between 90 per cent and 95 per cent MMR coverage up to 2025, aside from an understandable dip during the Covid pandemic. During the period of the interim government from August 2024 to February 2026, however, the mass measles vaccination campaign which normally happens every four years was missed. The last one was in 2020.

Stockpiles of vaccines became depleted as the procurement process slowed down and tens of thousands of health worker roles were left vacant.

Lacking foresight, the stand-in administration failed to react quickly enough to measles outbreaks in other countries in 2024. Another factor was that data from the private hospitals which many people in Dhaka use was not collated, the BMJ report found. It was the perfect storm. Mike Tildesley, Professor of Infectious Disease Modelling at the University of Warwick, said the difficulty facing nations with vaccination coverage problems is that the reproduction number for measles is extremely high.

As a result, herd immunity as defined by the WHO is only achieved when around 95 per cent have received the MMR jab.

“The consequence of this is that vaccination coverage doesn't need to fall very much for us to observe measles outbreaks again,” Professor Tildesley explained. “We've even seen this in the UK over the last few years, that measles cases have started to increase as a result of a drop in uptake of the MMR vaccine.”

Simon Townsley/The Telegraph Bangladesh’s new government is now playing catch-up with an emergency nationwide vaccination drive underway. Over four million children have already been reached. It is a race against the clock to prevent already weakened children from dying or suffering long-term complications, including inflammation of the brain and blindness.

At the Shishu Children’s Hospital in Dhaka, ICU staff on the hastily designated Measles ICU Ward have become accustomed to the grim spectacle of grieving parents carrying their tiny children’s bodies out, shrouded in white muslin cloth.

On one bed, garment factory worker Sheuli Akhter, 24, hugs her sleeping five-year-old niece Jammatal tightly, as if to shield her from encroaching danger. The two gaunt, immobile babies on the beds behind are the worst cases I have seen. I struggle to imagine them lasting long.

In the southern town of Noakhali, serious cases are being treated in a disused office building next to the main government hospital. The emergency add-on space is over capacity, with gurneys lining the corridors. Here, most measles patients are the children of smallholding farmers, fishermen, factory workers and labourers. Many arrived in the back of a rickshaw in their parents’ arms. Their tiny throats strain with hoarse coughs, their eyes are unfocused, they are floppy, and their weakened bodies are covered with a rash that in many cases has also spread internally.

Crouching next to her prone five-month-old daughter, Maisha on another bed is 29-year-old Nazmum Nahar, her face etched by fatigue and worry.

“When we brought her here her body had turned blue,” explains Nazmum. “I thought she was going to die.”

She is desperately underweight, having arrived at hospital in an already debilitated condition. Her recovery has been inhibited by the fact that her own recent birth was not straightforward, resulting in a hefty hospital bill for a Caesarean delivery.

“We had to hand over all the money we had when she was born,” continues her mother.

“That means we cannot even afford transport for her to be transferred to a better hospital.”

For some, the vaccination campaign backed by global vaccine alliance GAVI, UNICEF and the WHO has come too late.
