THE CatCalls The Catcalls EP

The Northern Colorado music scene is truly a unique animal. We’ve got everything from bluegrass, new-grass, indie, alternative, and metal. However, if there was ever a void for a sultry, chill style of blues rock, The Catcalls have filled it with the polished purr of their self-titled release. Led by singer and songwriter Riley Ann, The Catcalls have been stalwarts on the scene over the past few years (notably competing in our 2018 Battle Of The Bands) but it’s with the release of their upcoming self-titled EP that the group truly steps it up. The record kicks off with “Bloodhounds,” a sort of Beatles-on-downers track, with big, dissonant chords. It’s a powerful yet chill opener that almost sounds like music for a dream sequence in a film. Speaking of film, the album then showcases The Catcalls’ ability to take a song and make it their own, covering “You’re the One That I Want” from Grease. Riley and co-producer Jay Elliott take the John Travolta and Olivia Newton John classic and turn the temperature way down, transforming the bouncy pop hit into a cool, smooth number flecked with electric organ and wah-drenched guitars.

The album keeps with its cool, bluesy vibe on the very Colorado-centric “I Get High,” which features an almost honky-tonk piano, taking the listener’s imagination to an old rough-and-tumble roadhouse. Finally, the arguably stand-out track, if you will, “My Stand” closes out the five song collection. It’s slow and mysterious, placing us in a vast desert, with Riley’s vocals going from a previously more Susan Tedeschi and Bonnie Raitt style, to a feel reminiscent of Natalie Merchant’s more somber early works. The Catcalls’ self-titled EP not only accurately translates their raucous live performances to record, but also puts them at the forefront of cool, bluesy Colorado rock with an attitude that the scene so desperately needs. The Catcalls release their self titled EP October 17 with a show at Pinball Jones Campus West in Fort Collins.

Heart Eyes. Cycles. Clear Mind Valerie Vampola

Jarrod Gipson, known in the local scene as the drummer for Nina and the Hold Tight, ventures out with a debut solo album that should excite Hold Tight fans. Heart Eyes. Cycles. Clear Mind., out October 11, continues a similar modern, soulful pop rock sound, but he pulls his album in a mellow, electronic direction that hazes the air a bit more. Each track fades into the next with echoes of Gipson’s voice and spacey white noise, adding an air of confusion and angst. As a singer, Gipson shows an intimate and tender side to contrast his powerful choruses – the dynamics of which may surprise fans of his forceful drumming with The Hold Tight. He exaggerates that powerful chorus/verse contrast with subtle lower harmonies or by adding distortion effects, as heard in “Clockwise” and “Taste.” The wall of sound that characterizes much of the album is powerful and emotionally engaging. But at times all those instrumental layers are a bit too thick, lacking minimalistic moments to allow

the music to breathe and the listener to process it all. When he does give the arrangements some space, like at the end of “Fragments,” the vocals and keys give us a moment of tranquility. As a young, ambitious artist, it’s easy to want to throw every cool idea and effect out there to show your audience what you’re made of. But the best moments come when he exposes himself just a little more. Gipson’s debut is an impressive, ambitious introduction to him as a soloist, where he throws everything he’s got at us. Hopefully, he’ll continue his exploration of textures as well as refining his ideas to bring out his promising songwriting. If he does, a bright, clear path lies ahead. Heart Eyes. Cycles. Clear Mind. is available online October 11.

The first time you see Josh Dion and Geoff Kraly perform live, you’ll realize your mouth has been hanging open for minutes. This is the initial jaw-dropping shock one goes through at their first Paris Monster show: how are just two people doing this? The technical explanation of the group thus: Josh simultaneously sings unstoppably pure, mammothpowered soul, while playing super phat drums and deftly precise keyboard bass. Meanwhile, Geoff plays bass guitar through a modular synth, creating limitless soundscapes and melodic imagery. But the musical explanation of the dark, elaborately funky Paris Monster is something to be pondered. The only problem with doing so, is that your head

art out of foggy funk. Paris Monster lay down the deepest of staccatofunk grooves, yet paint bleak, verbose pictures above it in a soaring, soulful howl. With as much raw talent oozing from their pores as they do, Paris Monster take the high-road by keeping it smart, but keeping it low and nasty too. Lacy Jo is humble and gracious. She attributes her successes to God for showing her the way, her family and the agricultural community for always helping her grow and supporting her, and everyone that’s encouraged and helped her along the way. She believes she wouldn’t be where she is if not for these instrumental people. Jo writes her songs based on both experiences she’s been through herself, and those which people close to her have been through. Regardless of the inspiration for the song, there’s a relatable feel to her music, which is exactly what she is striving for. “I want to be able to reach people far and wide and let them know that they’re not alone; that someone out there understands,” Lacy Jo says. She wants to be the artist that followers and fans can relate to on such a level that they see her as a friend. Her forthcoming album is mainly ballads, raw songs focused on being real, which Lacy wrote based on her own life. Some feature heavy topics, while others highlight happiness, resulting in a varied mix for the listener. She chose to record the instrumental music and vocals live and simultaneously, a testimony to her skill as an artist and a nod to the requirements for the talent she seeks to

use on stage and in the studio. It’s a classic approach to recording where the margin for error is non-existent. This recording method goes hand-inhand with her beliefs and mindset as an artist. Lacy Jo, as well as her mentors and vocal coach, Dr. Scott Martin and guitar coach / Producer, Dave Beegle, all believe that as an artist and performer, the opportunity to be an influencer and role model to a large group of people is no light matter. Jo takes her career as an artist seriously, putting her best foot forward. Taking her outlook another step further, she wants to be the best example of a human being she can be. Listen to her music or talk to her at a show and you’ll see that first hand. The role-model idea, in part, came from her father’s words of wisdom, a phrase which has stuck with her throughout the years: “Take the risk and walk through the door. Practice every day for what you want. Don’t be somebody who overprepares and then doesn’t have enough courage to walkthe-walk and take the risk.” Lacy Jo is taking on more than just her new EP, working on collaborations with other artists, bands and community influencers, while currently building a full-time band. Once her band is put together, Lacy Jo plans to expand her reach and begin touring in 2020.

Country Music: An Illustrated History by Dayton Duncan and Ken Burns – This is the companion book to the PBS documentary Country Music. 2. Can’t Stop Won’t Stop: A History Of The Hip-Hop Generation by Jeff Chang – A thorough history of the roots of hop-hop through the social changes from the early 1970s on.

Memphis Rent Party by Robert Gordon – Though this book highlights people from the Memphis music scene (Alex Chilton, Jeff Buckley, etc) it’s more about how the city of Memphis itself influenced the work of so many musicians. 4. William S. Burroughs And The Cult Of Rock And Roll by Casey Rae – The writer William S. Burroughs was on the periphery of big moments in music and this book serves almost as an alternative music history about his time covering music and musicians. 5. 1971 Never A Dull Moment by David Hepworth – The author makes a case it was 1971 and not any other year that was the greatest year in rock music. His point centers on the (now iconic) ’71 releases from the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Who, and David Bowie, among others.

DJ Shadow: “Rocket Fuel” – We haven’t heard from Shadow since 2017 but the wait was worth it. With help from De La Soul, this banger propels any party. The Spy: A Netflix Original – I was skeptical of a thriller starring Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat) in a serious role, but this six part-er based on the true story of Eli Cohen infiltrating the Syrian government in the 60’s is an edge-ofyour-seat binge-watch! REBIRTH BRASS BAND OLD TRADITION, DIFFERENT GROOVE

Keith and Philip Frazier and the other members of the Rebirth Brass Band have to answer two questions every time they play a gig: Are you going to play some traditional stuff? Are you going to play your own stuff?

The answer, Keith said in an interview for BandWagon, depends on the location. If they’re home in New Orleans, where brass bands play as often as bluegrass bands play in Kentucky, the Rebirth will most likely play its famous hybrid

Cory Wong loves playing for Vulfpeck so much that his own album sounds, well, a lot like Vulfpeck. Where other members who recorded solo projects see it as a chance to show another side of themselves, like Theo Katzman’s

business. However, as much of a beast as Wong is on the guitar (and how catchy his composing and songwriting is) the album isn’t exactly a pedestal of attention for himself. Instead, he collaborated

The solo stuff helps the band be better.” melodious yacht rock-esque pop, Wong plays acid-jazz and funk with a goofy touch because, well, that is his true voice. The only difference being that on his latest album, Motivational Music for the Syncopated Soul, he got to call all the shots. “[Vulfpeck] encourages everyone to do their own thing. The solo stuff helps the band be better,” Wong said in a phone interview for BandWagon. All the members of Vulfpeck are accomplished solo artists, but instead of egotists, they are just a group of self-aware music nerds excited to play together. They draw from each other’s energy and use it to power their own projects. You could easily mistake some of Wong’s songs for something

with several well-established musicians: some personal friends he met on the road, and some he met only once after an Instagram follow. “I would sometimes pick someone based on pre-written material . . . but in some cases it was just because people wanted to hang,” remarked Wong. That structured process of selflessness manifests in different ways on the album. On his collaboration with Caleb Hawley, the main ideas written for their track “Limited World,” were workshopped via voice memos. With Emily C. Browning (on “Starting Line”) they had the opportunity to develop an idea over a 3-month period while on tour together.

His perhaps highest-profile collaboration, that with Jon Batiste (band leader for Stay Human, the house band on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert) wasn’t entirely intentional, but naturally developed when the two were hanging out one night after the Late Show. Batiste wanted to be involved in Wong’s project, so

Wong flew out to New York, where they recorded “St. Paul” and the soulful, emotional “Home.” And then sometimes those hangs lead to true spontaneous moments of magic. His collaboration with Tom Misch felt as such. Misch was visiting Los Angeles when he invited Wong over to hang out and see if they could write something. 30 minutes later they had “Cosmic Sans” recorded. Wong encourages featuring the voices of other artists on the record and emerses them in his writing process too. Often these magic moments are so surreal, he sometimes has to ask himself: “Am I allowed to do this?” As a response to his own self doubt and disbelief of his current state, he wrote the song “Today I’m Gonna Get Myself a Real Job,” where he mulls over the process of quitting music and

But really he’s acknowledging, in a playful way, that despite the exhausting grind of being a full-time musician and the negative YouTube comments or discouraging Spotify statistics that come along with putting yourself out there, moments like recording Motivational Music and getting to play with Vulfpeck are what motivates his soul.

FIRST CLASS There are no controversial names in the Greeley Arts Legacy’s inaugural Hall Of Fame class, but you might have a hard time finding people on the street who would know why Helen Langworthy was inducted. They would probably have heard her name, given that the University of Northern Colorado named its main theater performance venue after her. But there aren’t many, if any, left alive who knew her, said Noel Johnston, an Arts Legacy Board member. Langworthy has been dead for more than 30 years and had no children or spouse. Board members can’t find any living relatives. Langworthy may even be embarrassed at the honor: She allegedly didn’t want a memorial service of any kind at her death. But she, like the rest of the six who make up the inaugural class, was a stalwart of Greeley’s arts community. She started the Little Theater of the Rockies, now in its 80th year, and helped make UNC’s theater program one of the most well-regarded in the country. She was brought in as a oneyear replacement by President George Frasier and stayed more than 30 years,

retiring in 1965. But Langworthy is not the oldest in the inaugural class. That distinction belongs to the Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra (the oldest continuously operating orchestra west of the Mississippi) but Langworthy was perhaps the one in the most danger of being left behind. “We do not want to forget what happened,” said Ed Rogers, chairman of the Arts Legacy board as well as the Greeley Arts Commission. “It’s easy to select what we know, but we also want to go back and make sure our past is remembered.” The Arts Legacy board did just that, honoring Ruth Savig, a visual artist, teacher, actor and musician for decades in Greeley who passed away last year, as well as Langworthy and the Philharmonic. But it also honored more modern shoo-ins such as Howard Skinner, who also has a building named after him at UNC for his work there, who founded the Greeley Chorale and directed the Philharmonic for decades. Skinner also fulfilled another of the board’s requirements, though this one was less official. “We did want a

couple people who were still alive, to be honest,” Johnston said and laughed. The Arts Legacy board formed in 2017 to honor those who made significant and lasting contributions to the arts in Greeley. The 10-person board chose the first class after a selection committee narrowed down the 32 nominations from the public to 12 names. The board also chose two who weren’t artists themselves but contributed greatly to the scene: longtime philanthropist Bob Tointon and Jil Rosentrater. Rosentrater started such events as the Greeley Arts Picnic and the Cinco de Mayo Festival as director of cultural affairs, as well as having pushed for the construction of the Union Colony Civic Center in the 1980’s. The UCCC, in fact, will host the induction ceremony on October 4 in an event that’s free and open to the public. The UCCC will also eventually have an outdoor walkway honoring the class as part of some planned renovations of the building. The board hopes the ceremony draws some attention and attracts

even more ideas for who to honor next year – nominations for the 2020 class opening in later this month. Rogers said he was pleased with the number of nominations this year, as they produced an excellent inaugural class. But he wants more names from the public next year, including those who may not be as well-remembered as time passes. “We do not want this to be an elitist type of thing. We will throw biases out the window, Rogers said. “We will look at anything,” he continued, supporting the ideal that famous or humble, today’s Greeley deserves to know the individuals responsible for the breadth of arts history in its legacy.

The Inaugural Greeley Arts Legacy Hall Of Fame induction ceremony is Friday, October 4, in Downtown Greeley. Starting at 6:30pm in the Two Rivers Lounge of the Union Colony Civic Center, it continues at 7pm in the Hensel-Phelps theater.
