Executive Message: Our Community & Happiness On July 4, 2019, our country will celebrate the 243rd anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. We take it for granted now, but that remarkable document was crafted by some enormously eloquent and gifted individuals, chief among them Thomas Jefferson. Nearly all of us are familiar with its language:
You see, our happiness is intertwined with the well-being of our local community. Being connected in a community helps us feel like we belong. This has a big impact on our own happiness, and scientific evidence shows there are positive health benefits when we connect with people locally.
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.”
This year, the theme of our Annual Meeting is “Connecting our Communities,” and it is something we have done for the last 80 years. We are very excited to memorialize this commitment to community with the launch of the BEC Foundation.
Today, I would like to talk about the concept of "happiness" as an objective for the membership of Bandera Electric Cooperative. It is the only right mentioned not once but twice in that powerful opening to the founders' declaration of "the causes which led them to the separation" of the colonies from the authority of the king of Great Britain. So the concept of happiness is embedded in our national DNA. But does "the pursuit" of this "inalienable Right" have meaning for us as members of Bandera Electric Cooperative? As a nonprofit, community-based organization, our mission is to improve the quality of life, which I equate to improving happiness. So how has Bandera Electric improved happiness over its 80-year existence? I would suspect that people were happy to have electricity for the first time, and I know that our members who now have access to affordable high-speed internet are happy, and I hope that you are happy to be an owner of a community-based electric cooperative. 4 | BanderaElectric.com
All money raised by the BEC Foundation will go to local nonprofit charities that serve our community. I am proud of the fact that last year BEC supported more than 80 different entities in the Texas Hill Country. The easiest way to support BEC Foundation is to agree to round up your electric bill to the next full dollar. Even though this amounts to only six dollars per year on average, the impact can be significant. Direct donations are welcome, and we participate in the AmazonSmile program as well. I encourage all of you to support the BEC Foundation because some of our neighbors could use a little help. I’ve always believed that the measure of a community’s character is based on how they support the less fortunate and their local businesses. 2018 Meeting Minutes MINUTES OF THE ANNUAL MEETING OF THE MEMBERSHIP OF BANDERA ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE, INC. The Annual Meeting of the Membership of the Bandera Electric Cooperative, Inc. was held at the Bandera County Show Barn in Bandera, Texas, on the 19th day of May, 2018 in accordance with the Bylaws. Bruce Forey welcomed members to this year’s Annual Meeting and asked that District 4 Director Jeremy Diller give the invocation at 10:01 a.m. Bruce Forey then asked for all to stand for the posting of colors by the all-volunteer Fort Sam Houston Memorial Services Detachment. Our National Anthem was sung by Rachel Gaujardo followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Bruce Forey asked for all to be seated with the exception of all veterans and current active service members, to thank them for their service, on this Armed Forces Day. Bruce Forey then announced Attorney Don Richards. Attorney Richards informed members that $1,500,000 was returned in the form of capital credits, in the prior month. Attorney Richards then called the meeting to order at 10:11 a.m. and stated a quorum was present in person, by proxy, or having voted by mail. Attorney Richards then introduced Chairman Michael Edwards, District 8 representative. Chairman Edwards welcomed the members and visitors, and then asked all Directors to stand for introductions, which were made by video.

Director Solis read the Notice of Meeting and Proof of Mailing at 10:16 a.m. He then stated that the next order of business was the reading of the minutes of the Annual Meeting of the Membership held on May 20, 2017. He indicated that copies of these minutes were distributed to each Member at the registration desk and entertained a motion to dispense with the reading of the minutes. A motion was made to dispense with the reading of and to approve the minutes of the Annual Meeting of the Membership held on May 20, 2017. The motion received a second and was approved by the membership at 10:17 a.m.

Director Solis called on William Hethertington to present the CEO Report. At 10:18 a.m., William Hetherington welcomed members followed by a video, which recapped some of the highlights of 2017. At 10:24 a.m., William Hetherington presented the CEO Report. At 10:29 a.m., Chairman Edwards informed the Members of the Cooperative’s 2017 Annual Report, including statements from BEC management and other Cooperative statistics. He indicated that this information was handed out during the meeting registration and that any questions regarding the annual report or other business matters would be addressed after the adjournment of the meeting. Attorney Richards returned to speak at 10:30 a.m. and stated that in accordance with the provisions of the Bylaws, the following persons were placed in nomination as the official candidates:

Attorney Richards stated that votes received by the 11:00 a.m. deadline the previous day had been tabulated by Survey and Ballot Systems. The final tabulation of votes included all electronic, phone and mail-in ballots. Attorney Richards read the report regarding the final tally of votes for each candidate. A motion was made and seconded to approve the committee’s report. This motion was approved by the membership. At 10:32 a.m. the final election results were presented by Attorney Richards. The the following nominees received these number of votes:
Jeremy Diller with 2,029 votes.
Jerry Pierce with 2,078 votes.
Richard (Dick) Earnest with 2,009 votes.
With no unfinished business, Attorney Richards entertained a motion to adjourn. A motion was made, seconded, and approved by the membership to adjourn the meeting at 10:34 a.m.

How do I calculate my appliance energy consumption? Most household appliances have the wattage listed on the label, making calculating the energy cost easy. To find the kilowatts used by an appliance, you simply divide the watts listed on the appliance by 1,000 (the number of watts in a kilowatt) and then multiply by the hours used. Fun Fact: Since a refrigerator has to run constantly, it is one of the biggest energy users in the home. A refrigerator can use anywhere from 80-200 kWh per month (up to $170 per year on average), depending on the age of the unit. 2019 Scholarship Recipients We are excited to announce the winners of the 2019 BEC scholarships. Each year, BEC awards ten $2,500 college scholarships to outstanding high school seniors and college students. The scholarship program was established in 1998 to encourage and assist in the educational pursuits of BEC members, their immediate family members or applicants who reside in the service area. Scholarship funds may be used for the payment of tuition, enrollment fees, books, supplies and/or equipment required for courses of instruction at any accredited four-year university or college, junior college or TEA-approved trade school. Winners were chosen by the New Braunfels Area Community Foundation (NBACF). The NBACF fields all applicants, filters those applicants based on criteria set up by BEC, and selects scholarship recipients through an anonymous process. Congratulations to all of the winners!

2019 Youth Tour Delegates This year, Bandera Electric Cooperative will send four students to Washington, D.C., as our 2019 representatives at the Government-in-Action Youth Tour. Each year, BEC sponsors the Youth Tour in conjunction with Texas Electric Cooperatives and the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association. The four winners were selected by a committee of volunteers and will be recipients of an all-expenses-paid trip for an intensive week-long tour and leadership program.
