Dear Readers, It’s said that the Baal Hatanya once remarked that the arrival of Moshiach would be printed in the newspapers. In times past one may have wondered, What’s the big deal? Of course it would, don’t the papers report on what’s happened? That’s what they’re there for! I don’t think the question is still a good one. These past couple of months have shown us that all news organizations either root for the right or the left. No one’s in the middle. No one really tries to cover the truth, regardless of whether it confirms or contradicts their biases. Every story is further proof that the pre-determined bullseye is the correct one. In today’s media, if a story cannot be found to make the supporting point it may be just be made up, or fake news as some have called it. Says the Baal Hatanya: Moshiach’s arrival will be dif-

ferent. It will be printed in all of the papers. He won’t belong to a specific group and will not be owned by a party. He is coming for all of humanity. Everyone will celebrate the triumph of good and truth over evil and falsehood. Maybe having a pre-determined bull’s eye isn’t such a bad idea after all. We have the Torah and mitzvos; everything that happens is an expression of its truth. If we just push ourselves hard enough, we can find how events seeming otherwise are actually the biggest proof. Don’t trust me, just ask your local news anchor. This country is torn and could really use the fulfillment of the Messianic prophecies of peace just about now. Hopefully we won’t have to wait much longer. Wishing you a wonderful Shabbos, Shalom

Sam & Donna Wach Honored at NCSY’s 42nd Annual Isaac H. Taylor Jewish Music Festival By Binyamin Ansbacher BaltimoreJewishLife.com/Jeff Cohn

CSY’s 42nd Annual Isaac H. Taylor Jewish Music Festival took place on January 15th at the spectacular Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in downtown Baltimore with a crowd over 2,000 strong! This year, NCSY honored Rabbi and Mrs. Sam and Donna Wach with

the Lifetime Dedication Award for their many contributions to the teens of NCSY. “Sam and Donna have NCSY in their blood. Sam grew up in the Catskill Region of NCSY and Donna from New Jersey and then during the mid-80’s, while in Ner Israel, Sam became an advisor in Atlantic Seaboard”. “We raised our kids in NCSY and could not be happier that we did. At a young age our kids taught by example and became accepting and caring of fellow Jews no matter what their level of Torah knowledge and

observance”. This year’s concert featured the musical talent of Jewish music sensations Dovid Gabay, Simcha Leiner, and Yerachmiel Begun & the Miami Boys Choir. The event began with a beautiful VIP reception for NCSY supporters. Mr. Izzy Patoka, Director of Community Development at LifeBridge Health (formerly Executive Director of the Governor’s Office of Community Initiatives) presented a proclamation on behalf of the newly elect-

ed Baltimore City Councilmen Isaac “Yitzy” Schleifer to Sam and Donna Wach. Mr. Schleifer was unable to personally attend due to the birth of his daughter, Bobbi, earlier in the day. Moments before the concert began, the VIP’s were ushered in to take their seats among the lively and enthusiastic crowd. The concert was kicked off with co-hosts Azi Rosenbloom and an Atlantic Seaboard teen leader. After a brief program including an inspiring video about the Wachs’ profound contribution to the teens of NCSY, Jewish Cont. on page 8

music superstar Dovid Gabay began his enthusiastic performance, backed by Baltimore’s Zemer Orchestra and Jewish Music Producer Yochi Briskman, performing his smash hit “LeGabay”, the emotional “Daven for Me” and his recent hit “Hakol LeTovah”! The crowd radiated energy as Simcha Leiner performed songs from his newest live-in-concert release “Live in Odessa” as well his emotional hit “Kol Beramah” which he composed while learning here, in Baltimore, at Yeshivas Ner Yisrael. Yerachmiel Begun & The Miami Boys Choir’s performance dazzled as they performed an array of their contemporary hits as well as nostalgic Miami classics. This was the first show of their “MBC 40th Anniversary world-tour”.

While incredibly entertaining and enjoyable - the NCSY concert is about far more than a fun night out with great music. As Dr. Michael Elman explained, “this concert is Atlantic Seaboard NCSY’s single largest fundraising event of the year. Each and every attendee can have a real chance to make a significant impact on the Jewish future as this event generates the support needed to guarantee that no Jewish child is ever denied the opportunity to experience the beauty of Torah.” The show ended on a high note as all of the evening’s performers returned to the grand finale performance of Mordechai Ben David’s “Someday We Will All Be Together”. They were joined onstage by Rabbis Yitzchok Dinovitzer, Yitz Levi and Jonah Lerner, NCSY’s Regional Directors.

STAR-K Kosher Certification Awards Grant to Mikvah of Baltimore

B

altimore’s history of providing a community mikvah dates back several generations. Recently, archeologists discovered one of the oldest mikvaos in the United States, built in 1845, in the basement of the Lloyd Street Synagogue in East Baltimore. Subsequent-

ly, others were built by Shearith Israel Congregation, Congregation Shomrei Mishmeres HaKodesh, and Khal Arugas Habosem; the first autonomous Mikvah of Baltimore opened in 1963 on Rogers Avenue. The outgrowing of this structure and a further northwest geographical shift was the impetus for building its present facility on Clarks Lane in 1992.

The further rapid growth of the Mikvah of Baltimore since that move—often resulting in an hour plus wait time for the 40-70 daily users— has necessitated its expansion and the solicitation of significant community funding for the first time in 25 years. To help alleviate this financial strain, STAR-K Kosher Certification has pledged a generous grant to the Mikvah of Baltimore as its latest initiative in a string of worthy community causes and institutions that it is honored to help support. “Our Capital Expansion Project includes the simultaneous expansion of the Clarks Lane mikvah, the renovation of the existing mikvah, and a satellite community-run Shabbos and Yom Tov mikvah,” notes Eliezer Abramson, president of the Mikvah of Baltimore. “There was a consensus that this satellite mikvah should be located in the Ranchleigh area be-

cause of the growing number of young families moving there. Thankfully, STAR-K has chosen to be a partial sponsor of this branch which will be dedicated in its name.” According to Mr. Abramson, no opening date has been announced for the satellite Ranchleigh branch of the Mikvah of Baltimore. He is presently working with contractors to get pricing so it can move forward with the necessary renovations for the already purchased property in Ranchleigh. STAR-K’s pledge follows in a long line of gifts that it has given to organizations which are unique, important, and extremely necessary, as a way of giving back to and enhancing the Baltimore community. “STAR-K is thrilled to fill this vital need in our community and have a chalek in this mitzvah,” says STAR-K President Avrom Pollak.

Jewish Experience Week By Ari Kravetz

C

ollege students from Florida, Texas, Missouri and New York came during their winter break to Baltimore for a week to delve into their Jewish roots and experience the Jewish community Jewish Experience Week in it’s 5th year lead by Rabbi Zvi Schwartz themed this year’s program Med Connections where pre med students participated in various learning opportunities, networked with medical professionals,while exploring the world class medical facilities that Maryland has to offer. The trip kicked off with a Hatzalah tour by Dubie Heyman inspiring participants in Hatzolah’s new headquarters . Lunch and Learn” featured a special program at the Star-K where Rabbi Sholom Tendler delivered a

presentation entitled, “Myths of Kosher,” speaking about common kashrus misconceptions and confusions. Afternoons featured tours of world class facilities like the Maryland Shock Trauma Center and National Institute of Health. Students also got a taste of Baltimore in a Police Ride along. Evenings were spent with engaging discussions by lay leaders and Doctors with a Thursday night Stew and Brew at the home of Mr and Mrs Shuie Shapiro. Mornings, the students of the JEW program could be found in the beis hamedrash of Ner Yisroel learning Gemara with baal habatim from the community. The students had the privilege to have shiurim in Medical ethics given by Rabbi Moshe Hauer, Rabbi Yehuda Moridian, and Rabbi Yosef Wagner. In case the growth made by all the students during the week wasn’t

enough, one students also ended up getting a new pair of tefillin and another enrolling at Yeshivas Shor Yoshuv. All students left eager to continue their Jewish journey. When asked to reflect on the trip Matan Kadosh, from Dallas and currently a student at the University of Missouri, commented, “The Med-Connections program was both a fun and informative trip rolled into one week long program. During the trip I had the opportunity to tour world-class facilities such as NIH and The Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center. I had the opportunity of meeting Jewish medical professionals who are highly renowned in their respective fields in both research and trauma. Rabbi Schwartz is a seasoned and down-to-earth rabbi who was able to provide an unparalleled array of speakers who lead discussions concerning Jewish Medical Ethics, Biblical learning, and much more. During the trip we stayed with welcoming host families and met other Jewish professionals in the Greater Baltimore community. I personally found the experience very enlightening both in Medical Ethics and Jewish learning, which I will continue to learn about during my future career as a physician and my goal of personal self-fulfillment.” University Jewish Experience is already taking applicants for its summer jInternship program which will provide students the opportunity to live in the Baltimore or Kemp Mill Jewish community and participate in weekly Shabbatons and Shiurim, all while interning at medical facilities, companies, and Capital Hill. Bais Yaakov Exhibit 5777/2017 Stirs Thousands

F

or the last two weeks, another of the legendary, larger than life Bais Yaakov of Baltimore exhibits has been open to the public, and judged by the comments of mesmerized visitors, this one has certainly equaled if not bettered its predecessors in its grandeur and magnitude. The Exhibits have been presented to the public every four to five years and are largely seen as a truly unique experience in the larger Jewish community, drawing many thousands of visitors. These include schools and groups that bus in from the tri-state area and beyond. An observer commented that if a museum type presentation of this quality were created in the New York vicinity, it would easily draw tens of thousands of guests in a mere matter of weeks. In addition, this year’s schedule included “Grandparents Day” as well as many other group tours including, but not limited to, The Associated Women, Israel Bonds Women, as well as members of the Deaf and hard of hearing community (see articles about all of these below), to name a few. The Exhibit theme depicted in this year’s presentation is the group of great women throughout Jewish history who formed or led Klal Yisroel. The

theme, “Eishes Chayil: Guardians of Our Glory- A Celebration of Women in Tanach,” movingly depicts the central role that our Imahos (matriarchs) and nevios (prophetesses) played in

the creation and development of our people. The Exhibit occupies an entire high school floor, with eleven large classrooms and hallways dedicated to the Imahos, sheva nevios and other great righteous tzidkaniyos alluded to in Eishes Chayil (Mishlei, Perek 31:10-31). A combination of the professional quality of the presentations and their beautifully crafted messages has led to guests- men and women- experiencing genuine inspiration. And these guests include an amazing range of our brothers and sisters from all walks of Jewish life. Numerous hashkafic and historical ideas, places and images are projected at the Exhibit through a multiplicity of artistic media. The creativity of the students extends to mockups of Esther in Achashveirosh’s palace, the tents of our Imahos, a real kriyas yam suf (splitting of the sea), a DNA model, the eitz hada’as, (tree of knowledge) and much, much more. The vast array of media used include actual cut stone (!), beautiful stained glass, embroidery, quilting, stunning art work, mosaics, videos and interactive games.

The materials used- costing tens of thousands of dollars and including numerous structures- include a list as long as the students’ minds were creative in planning their individual projects. It is truly hard to believe, in times when our young people have to fend off so many outside influences, that they can muster their determination, stamina, diligence, happy spirits and comradery to create a project of this sort, taking thousands of man hours and endless old fashioned, loving handiwork to complete. Our Imahos must certainly be smiling in shomayim, to witness such wonderful and inspired children. Unending thanks are due to our superstar faculty trio who guided the students in their efforts, project brainchild Mrs. Wolf, together with Mrs. Goldstein, and Mrs. Krakauer. Their z’chus, together with that of utterly selfless teachers and parents, all blessed with untold s’yata d’shmaya (Divine assistance), have helped the students bring a great and unique gift to Klal Yisroel, and supreme nachas to all of us at Bais Yaakov.

ccording to an old adage, if the first thing you do each morning is eat a live frog, nothing worse can happen for the rest of the day. Time-management guru Brian Tracy explains that your “frog” should be the most difficult or most annoying or most unappealing task on your to-do list – the one you’re most likely to procrastinate. Because if you eat that first, momentum will carry you throughout the day; if you let that frog sit there while you attend to other things, you’ll never eat your frog. Moshe could teach us a thing or two about frogs and procrastination. After the plague of frogs, Pharaoh agreed to allow the Jewish people to worship G-d in the desert, provided the frogs were removed by the next day (Shemos 8:4-7). Moshe and Aaron left, and Moshe prayed to G-d “immediately” that the frogs be removed (Rashi, Shemos 8:8). Why immediately? Because as much as Moshe surely did not want

the frogs to go – after all, they were tormenting his oppressors – he knew it had to be done, so he did it without delay. Moshe would show time again that he was no procrastinator. When attacked by Amalek, Moshe told Yehoshua to “go out and fight against Amalek, tomorrow, I will stand on top of the mountain with the staff of G-d in my hand’”

R’ Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld suggests that the reference to “tomorrow” was left vague by design, to show that the power of the Evil Inclination (symbolized by Amalek) is in the “tomorrow,” the procrastination. had a student who rented a small apartment from the local “poritz,” the Polish landowner who could – and usually did – make life miserable for his Jewish tenants. When the student’s finances took a turn for the worse, the poritz threatened to evict him and his family. With nowhere to turn, the student went to the Bach and poured out his soul. As it happened, the Bach had another, well-off student who was on friendlier terms with the poritz, and the Bach hoped he would intercede. Emissaries of the Bach arrived at the home of the wealthy student and found him packing his bags. “Oh, I’d love to help,” he explained, “but I just can’t at the moment. I have an important business matter in another city and must leave at once. Rest assured, though, I will do everything I can upon my return.” It seemed reasonable, but by the time he returned, the poor student and his wife and small children had been evicted and shoved out onto the street for a full week. Eventually, the wealthy student returned and prevailed upon the poritz to forego the outstanding rent balance, and the poor student and his family moved back into their humble abode.

The High Holy Days were approaching in a Displaced Persons camp after the Holocaust, and a group of survivors were tasked with arranging services. They approached a highly-regarded rabbi – a survivor himself – and asked him to deliver words of guidance and inspiration to the makeshift congregation. Reluctantly, he agreed. Speaking just at the twilight hour of Yom Kippur, the rabbi praised the survivors’ strength and told of the Evil Inclination who was plotting with his minions about how to exploit some weakness to extinguish any hope for rebuilding

the Jewish people. “How will they seek to attack us? Depression? Questioning faith? Breakdown in interpersonal relations? They could never overcome us directly, especially not with all we’ve suffered through. No. I believe they’ll allow us to do all the good things we want to do – as long as we start tomorrow.” * * * If you’re anything like me, you’re a chronic procrastinator. Most people are. But there’s a better way. We can stop procrastinating, as long as we act – now. So put down this article. Look at your list of things to do. Circle the frog. And go eat it.

The Brisker Rav once asked a prominent community member to prepare an important letter just before Shabbos. Because time was short, however, the man asked whether it had to be done right then or could wait until after Shabbos. The Brisker Rav shot him a puzzled look. “And who said you’ll be alive after Shabbos?” The antidote to procrastination? Today. That’s the reason the Torah stresses “today” consistently. “And you should know today…that [our G-d] is G-d in the heavens above

were both fortunate to get involved in our children’s school, Ohr Chadash Academy. I have been on the school’s Board and the Finance Committee for several years now. Yael is the president of a very active school PTA. Our roles allow us to assist in running special events within the school and the community. Last year Yael was instrumental in organizing the community Yom Ha’Atzmaut celebration held at Shomrei. It was a huge success. The planning is underway for this year’s function scheduled for May 2nd. Yael is also on the Levindale Ladies Auxiliary Board, running special events for children and the Levindale residents around the Yamim Tovim. I also am also a member of the Shomrei Emunah Board and Yael is one of the leaders of the Shomrei sisterhood. It is exciting to see that you will soon be receiving Shomrei Emunah’s Young Leadership Award. Tell us about Shomrei and your involvement with the Shul. Congregation Shomrei Emunah was one of the first institutions that we encountered when we arrived in Baltimore over 4 years ago. From the very first Shabbos, we felt welcome. We were greeted by people of all ages and backgrounds. We quickly learned that Shomrei was the perfect blend of Torah, Mitzvot and the love of Eretz

Yisrael. Shomrei is also truly blessed to have Rabbi Binyamin Marwick as its Rabbi and leader. His knowledge as well as his love of Torah and Yiddishkeit is inspirational. Now, four years later, Shomrei has become more than just a Shul to us. It has become our home. Our children look forward to coming to Shul every Shabbos. Whether it is Koby singing “adon olam” at the bimah or Racheli and Maya attending groups, Shomrei filled a piece of our lives that we never knew was missing before we moved to Baltimore. It is therefore an absolute pleasure to accept the Young Leadership Award. Firstly, because we are still considered “young” and secondly, we accepted this honor because we owe a tremendous amount of gratitude to our Shul, to Rabbi and Rebbetzin Marwick and to the entire Shomrei community for being an integral part of our lives. Torah Thought Challenges of Complacency in Yetzias Mitzrayim By Rabbi Azriel Hauptman Habituation (derived from the word habit) is a word we use to describe becoming accustomed or used to a situation. Habituation can be very detrimental. At times we can find ourselves in adverse situations which require significant amounts of energy in order to escape. In this situation, habituation is outright dangerous as it leads to complacency and causes us to lose the desire to escape and break free. We become apathetic and indifferent. As a philosopher once said, “Habituation puts to sleep the eye of our judgment.”

Reb Simcha Bunim of Peshischa, one of the great Chassidic Rebbes of the early 19th century, explains that Bnai Yisrael found themselves in a similar situation during their slavery in Egypt. He points this out through a careful reading of the text. In the beginning of Parshas Vaeyra (6, 6) it states, “I will take you out from the Sivlos of Mitzrayim.” The simple translation of Sivlos is burdens. However, Reb Simcha Bunim points out that Sivlos actually refers to a burden that we have become accustomed to carrying. The word Savlanus which

means patience or tolerance has the same root. When we are patient or tolerant, we are being faced with a situation that has the potential to provoke our anger but instead we choose to be patient or tolerant and be “sovel” the situation. Accordingly, the following message was told to Bnai Yisrael. You have become habituated to the slavery in Egypt. Your emotions now are apathy and indifference. These emotions are counterproductive to freedom and liberty. Only those who yearn to be free can achieve that freedom. Therefore, I, Hashem, will take you out of these negative emotions and I will give you the desire and longing for freedom. We are all faced throughout our lives with different types of adversity. The challenge is how to discern when

we should allow ourselves to become habituated and when we should not. We learn from Reb Simcha Bunim that we can daven to Hashem and ask Him to remove from our hearts any misplaced habituation as He did for our forefathers in Egypt. Rabbi Azriel Hauptman is a highly regarded Marbitz Torah both inside and outside our shul walls. He has given a Daf Yomi shiur in our shul for more than fifteen years, having finished Shas twice and currently going through a third cycle with a large group of dedicated talmidim. Tech-Savvy Thieves Arrested A gang of 12 that is responsible for the theft of equipment worth tens of millions of shekels has been arrested in Israel. The crew used sophisticated frequency jamming technology in order to pull off their elaborate heists. According to police, the group would find businesses that dealt in expensive goods and would track their hours of operations. They would then use advanced jamming systems to block alarm frequencies and video cameras. Law enforcement frequencies were also monitored to make sure their thievery went undisturbed. The origins of their jamming technology is currently under investigation as only licensed security agencies are authorized to use such equipment. The technology also requires official permits from the Ministry of Communications, which the gang apparently had. The equipment allowed the group to operate undetected for many years. When the 12 suspects were brought in, police found NIS 2.5 million in cash and many vehicles in their possession. The investigation is ongoing and more arrests are expected, as well as answers to many questions that have surrounded the probe.

Terror Tunnels Collapsing

A terrorist was killed inside a collapsed tunnel in southern Gaza

last week. Hamas said that Yussef al-Agha died in Khan Yunis when a “resistance tunnel” collapsed. The tunnels are dug to commit terror operations against Israel. The terror organization’s network of tunnels was mapped and attacked during 2014’s counterterror effort known as “Operation Protective Edge.” Since then, Hamas has been busy reconstructing their tunnel network. During their reconstruction, there have been several collapses that have taken lives. Hamas said last month that 21 terrorists were killed in tunnel collapses in 2016. In October, a member of the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas’s armed terror wing, was killed after an underground tunnel collapsed on him. Last month, a tunnel collapsed in the Shuja’iyya neighborhood of Gaza killing two terrorists. Egypt has helped destroy the terror tunnels. Gazans, who share a border with Egypt, have used the tunnels to smuggle in people, cash, weapons, and commercial goods.

Bibi to Iranians: We are Not Your Enemy

Benjamin Netanyahu slammed the Iranian regime this week in a video he released online addressing the Iranian population. Israel’s prime minister vowed that he would speak with Donald Trump about the aggression that has come out of Tehran when he meets with him for the first time. Though he did not directly call on the Iranian people to revolt, Netanyahu did describe how the brutal regime

down.” Netanyahu made clear that he has no problem with the Iranian people, only their dictatorship system that commands power. “By calling daily for Israel’s destruction, the regime hopes to instill hostility between us. This is wrong. We are your friend, not your enemy. We’ve always distinguished between the Iranian people and the Iranian regime,” he said. “The regime is cruel – the people are not;

the regime is aggressive – the people are warm. I yearn for the day when Israelis and Iranians can once again visit each other freely in Tehran and Esfahan, in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.” Until 1979, when a revolution overthrew the secular regime of the Shah, Israel and Iran enjoyed a close relationship. Israelis and Iranians “can work together for a more peaceful and hopeful future for both of us,” the prime minister concluded. “We

must defeat terror and tyranny and we must ensure that freedom and friendship win the day.”

Trump and Bibi’s Chat

Bibi Netanyahu and President Trump spoke over the phone this week in their first conversation since Trump took over the Oval Office. On the call, President Trump pledged to help address the “threats posed by Iran,” contribute his full support of Israel’s security needs, and help achieve peace in the region. Many in Israel hope that the phone conversation is the beginning of a new Israel-America relationship – one that has been strained during the past eight years when Obama occupied the Oval Office. The White House’s account of the call gives a small preview of what may be to come. A White House spokesman said that the two leaders discussed ways to “advance and strengthen the U.S.-Israel special relationship.” Trump stressed “the importance the United States places on our close military, intelligence and security cooperation with Israel, which reflects the deep and abiding partnership between our countries.” Netanyahu and Trump agreed to “closely consult on a range of regional issues, including addressing the threats posed by Iran,” the White House said. The likeness of mind on the Iran deal is possibly the biggest difference between the current U.S. administration and the old one. The president also stressed that peace between Israel and the Palestinians “can only be negotiated directly between the two parties and that the

2,500 New Settlement Homes This week, Israel approved the construction of approximately 2,500 homes in the West Bank, most of them in existing settlement blocs, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman announced on Tuesday. The decision came two days after a Jerusalem planning committee approved the construction of 566 housing units in East Jerusalem, and on the heels of a phone conversation on Sunday between Netanyahu and U.S. President Donald Trump, in which the two discussed their plans for the region. Outside the larger settlement areas, Liberman and Netanyahu allowed the construction of 86 homes for the former residents of the evacuated Migron settlement, who now live in the Yekev neighborhood of the Kochav Ya’akov settlement, south of Ramallah. The approval was granted in accordance with an agreement between the government and Migron residents. In addition, 20 homes were approved in the Beit El settlement, north of Ramallah, as part of a High Court of Justice decision, the defense minister said. On Sunday, the Jerusalem Municipality approved the construction of 566 new homes in East Jerusalem, in a vote that had been pushed back from December in order to avoid angering the outgoing administration of former U.S. president Barack Obama. The Palestinians condemned the decision as an explicit violation of the recent anti-settlement resolution at the United Nations.

The Week In News items are “Swiss made”? Swiss watchmakers H. Moser & Cie had a bit of fun with the term when it made a watch, the Swiss Mad Watch, entirely out “the most precious Swiss material” – Swiss cheese. “H. Moser & Cie is making Swiss Made great again with the Swiss Mad Watch, the most Swiss watch ever produced!” the company said. The watch features a case made of hardened Vacherin Mont d’Or medaille d’or cheese, a strap made of cowhide, and a red dial reminiscent of the Swiss flag. The price, though, is nothing to “cheese” at. For just 1,081,291 Swiss francs ($1,077,734) you can also be the proud owner of this stinky timepiece. The price is symbolic of the day the Swiss Federal Charter was signed on August 1, 1291. “As you may know, since January 1, 2017, the regulations surrounding the Swiss Made label have been modified. Some see it as an improvement, strengthening the requirements; I frankly believe that the Swiss Made label is even weaker today that it was before,” H. Moser & Cie CEO Edouard Meylan said. “We have even decided to remove ‘Swiss Made’ from our dials for all of our new collections because we strongly believe that the Swiss Made label is deceiving as it gives many brands the legitimacy to over-price their products and it promotes a false perception for customers about a Swiss made watch and the reality of what is actually made in Switzerland.” Meylan made sure to add one more important detail – he said the cheese in the watch base is pasteurized and therefore does not stink. Oh, and it’s edible too.

Two Smashed Cars and a Lottery Ticket Georgiy Karpekin owned two cars last week and now he has none. What

he does have, though, is a lot of luck. Georgiy was at Sacramento City College when strong winds felled a tree, which smashed into his car. “I walked up to my truck and I saw it was ‘taco-ed’ around a tree,” he said. A fallen tree had formed the pickup into the shape of a taco shell.

He eventually got a ride back home only to discover that another tree had fallen on two vehicles parked in front of his house, including his own car. “Yeah, and then I come home and two other cars, huh? My luck. I bought a lottery ticket. It didn’t win, but...” Georgiy said. “I feel like I’m the luckiest guy. Why? I came out alive. Everything is fine. My insurance is covering it. There’s no other way to look at it, right?” The philosophical Californian added, “You know, life’s full of peaks and valleys, man. You can’t help but laugh.”

Patmon served less than two years in prison and is now out of jail. But the convicted art thief wasn’t happy just being free. He wanted to be pardoned as well. Last week, police arrested Patmon once again. It seems that in his haste to drive to Washington, D.C., from Miami, Patmon “borrowed” someone’s vehicle. Police found the stolen car after a police license plate reader indicated the car was stolen. According to police spokeswoman Ashley Savage, Patmon “wanted to meet with Eric Holder” because “he was looking to be pardoned by the Obama administration before the Trump administration came in.” Eric Holder, though, was no longer in the White House. Loretta Lynch took over for him back in 2015. Back in 2009, Patmon told investigators that he had been inspired by an episode of the PBS series “Antiques Roadshow” to steal and resell art so he could resume the comfortable life he’d been living before he was convicted of assault in 2001. When authorities searched Patmon’s Miami home, they found one of the Picassos, a 1957 etching of a woman reading a book called “Jacqueline Lisant,” hidden behind the sofa. Seems like Patmon has a pattern of criminal behavior.

Marcus Sanford Patmon, 45, has spent time in jail. In 2009, Patmon pleaded guilty to attempted wire fraud and interstate transportation of stolen property for trafficking in two stolen Pablo Picasso etchings and a stolen Marc Chagall lithograph — together worth over a half-million dollars.

Stuck in traffic? Not a problem – especially if you have some pizza to tide you over. A pizzeria owner in Italy personally handed out free pizza and water to drivers stuck in traffic during a massive wildfire. Simone Di Maria,

owner of La Pizza di Egizio, happily paraded through the streets of Genoa to provide free food to drivers as traffic remained at a standstill. “You can’t leave people starving at dinner time,” he insisted. “A margherita is a small gesture that can get a bad day back on track.” Di Maria said flames came within 330 feet of his home and expressed gratitude for the firefighters “who worked tirelessly, at great risk, to ensure the safety of us all” by battling the blaze for several days. His act of kindness spread like wildfire, with people urging the mayor of the town to recognize what Di Maria did. “An act like that unfortunately today day is increasingly rare,” one person said. “You deserve it with honor!” And that’s what we call a slice of nice!

Slice of Whatever I’ll take a slice of “whatever” with extra cheese. It’s annoying when people are indecisive at crucial moments – like when you have to decide where to go out to eat, whether or not to bring an umbrella, or if you should bring along a sweatshirt “just in case.” But ever order pizza and don’t have a specific topping in mind? Well, if you’re friends with this guy you’d better make a decision. Recently, a Reddit user posted a passive aggressive move he made against his friend when he asked her what pizza he should order for her. “Whatever,” she answered. And so he ordered her “whatever.” “Please send me an extra empty box that has ‘whatever’ written in big letters in it because that’s what my [friend] said she wants.” Time to make a decision – about maybe not being friends with this guy anymore.

Even the word “leaker” is misleading. Leak makes it sound like a piece of information a whistleblower gives Woodward and Bernstein to expose misdeeds in high office. This

A campaign chairman’s private emails and Democratic National Committee chatter, i.e. campaign gossip, backbiting, indiscretions and cynicism. The usual stuff, embarrassing but not dangerous. was nothing of the sort. It was the indiscriminate dumping of a mountain of national security secrets certain to bring harm to American troops, allies and interests. Obama considered Manning’s 35-year sentence excessive. On the contrary. It was lenient. Manning could have been – and in previous ages, might well have been – hanged for such treason. Now she walks after seven years. What makes this commutation so spectacularly in-your-face is its hypocrisy. Here is a president who spent weeks banging the drums over the harm inflicted by WikiLeaks with its release of stolen materials and emails during the election campaign.

After eight years of reassurance, Obama seized the chance – free of political accountability for himself and his potential Democratic successor – to do permanent damage to Israel. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, the U.S. ambassador to the U.N. who went on to be a great Democratic senator, once argued passionately that in the anti-American, anti-democratic swamp of the U.N., America should act unwaveringly in opposition and never give in to the jackals. Obama joined the jackals. Why? To curry favor with the international left? After all, Obama leaves office as a relatively young man of 55. His next chapter could very well be as a leader on the international stage, perhaps at the U.N. (secretary-general?) or some transnational (ostensibly) human rights organization. What better demonstration of bona fides than a gratuitous attack on Israel? Or the about-face on Manning and WikiLeaks? Or the freeing of a still unrepentant Puerto Rican terrorist, Oscar Lopez Rivera, also pulled off with three days remaining in his presidency. A more likely explanation, however, is that these are acts not of calculation but of authenticity. This is Obama being Obama. He leaves office as he came in: a man of the left, but possessing the intelligence and discipline to suppress his more radical instincts. As of Nov. 9, 2016, suppression was no longer necessary. arack Obama did not go out quietly. His unquiet final acts were, in part, overshadowed by a successor who refused to come in quietly and, in part, by Obama’s own endless, sentimental farewell tour. But there was nothing nostalgic or sentimental about Obama’s last acts. Two of them were simply shocking. Perhaps we should have known. At the 2015 White House correspondents dinner, he joked about whether he had a bucket list: “Well, I have something that rhymes with bucket list.” Turns out, he wasn’t kidding. Commuting the sentence of Chelsea Manning, one of the great traitors of our time, is finger-in-the-eye willfulness. Obama took 28 years off the sentence of a soldier who stole and then released through WikiLeaks almost half a million military reports plus another quarter-million State Department documents. The cables were embarrassing; the military secrets were almost certainly deadly. They jeopardized the lives not just of American soldiers on two active fronts – Iraq and Afghanistan – but of locals who were, at great peril, secretly aiding and abetting us. After Manning’s documents release, the Taliban “went on a killing spree” (according to intelligence sources quoted by Fox News) of those who fit the description of individuals working with the United States. Real Winners By Rabbi Zvi Teichman Of all the plagues that assaulted the Egyptians there is one that is obscured in mystery. Its very name defies clear description. We have been commonly taught that the plague of Arov consisted of numerous and varied families of wild animals descending upon Egypt wreaking havoc and pandemonium among the frightened populace. Arov though, simply means a “mixture”, but of what?

According to various opinions, it might refer to swarms of angry birds of prey. Alternatively it may intimate hordes of aggressive land animals consisting of lions, tigers and bears as well as other similar vicious beasts. Perhaps it was a conglomeration of land, air and sea creatures. Some claim it was clouds of hornets and other flying insects. Others contend that Arov was packs of wild wolves or maybe just marauding panthers. )‫(עיין תורה שלמה אות סד סה סח‬ Either way, the Torah chose to de-emphasize its exact genus and merely describe it as simply a “mixture”. Why leave out these exciting details? Additionally, it is the only one of the ten plagues that is termed ‫"הֶ "עָ רֹוב‬ )‫(שמות ח יז‬, “The” Arov, prefaced with the ‫"ה" הידיעה‬, the definite article “the”, accentuating the unique nature of this specific plague. In what way is this “mixture” distinguished more so than any of the other magnificent plagues? The great Poet and Sage, Rav Eliezer HaKalir describes in verse that is recited by some on the second day of Pesach at Shacharis ‫(בעשר מכות‬ )...‫פתרוסים‬, how each plague’s unique

punishment corresponds precisely to similar evil acts the Egyptians perpetrated against the Jewish nation. He delineates how: “ they spilled like water the blood of infants, therefore into blood will their liquids turn”, “they crushed and pressed them (into bricks) to destroy them, therefore the frogs alighted and demolished them”, “they oppressed them with dust and water to produce bricks, therefore the dust was transformed into lice”. He then goes on to describe the “measure for measure” nature of Arov: ‫ לכן‬,‫הם הֶ גלום להביא חיות להַ צדָ אֹות‬ ‫ערוב בא להַ צדֹות‬, they exiled them to retrieve wild animals for “sport and play”, therefore a swarm of wild beasts came to decimate them. ‫(עיין ב"ר פי"א ג ובמפרשי המדרש שם‬ )‫ הרש"ש‬,‫ הרד"ל‬,‫בפרט עץ יוסף‬ What is so significant in the fact that they were dispatched to hunt and capture animals for sport? There is no mention here of the danger they were exposed to, simply that they were expected to travel and fetch from the wild, animals for their oppressor’s purposeless games of enjoyment. This aspect of the Egyptians mistreatment of the Jews seems to pale in significance in contrast with the other very obvious abuses they were held accountable for. Have you ever observed or sensed personally the passion and joy when engaging in competitive sports or when merely spectating? What makes sports so exciting? In a sense competitive sport contains all the elements for a successful life. One must have a goal. One must face challenge in order to advance and

become more skilled. One must focus on, and commit to, an objective. One must adhere to the rules of engagement while protecting and preserving what one has gained. One must be alert and swift to gain an advantage and edge in achieving the goal. G-d had hardwired this instinct within the animal kingdom as well. Think about it, the manner in which each of the species obtains its needs and advances its familial and territorial goals is predicated on all the same “ideals” mentioned above. Each of our souls instinctively pines for true success. The ultimate achievement lies in the goal of self-perfection in the image of our Creator, that brings us closer to the purpose of life, '‫להתענג על ד‬, to cleave to G-d and to rejoice in, and relish that pleasure. Man however has relinquished that quest and replaced it with artificial goals. It may be the search for physical pleasure, the pursuit of meaningless recognition and honor or the rush for power and control. These poor imitations mimic our deepest desire for spiritual enjoyment, our noble pursuit of making our own unique and valuable contribution to the world and the joy of that ultimate force, the exhilarating power of self-control. The excitement and pounding heart we experience when observing a mother grizzly bear successfully fend off an attacker of her young cubs, stems from the soul identifying with that desire to be a true champion. It is merely misplaced. The origin of sports began with the glee ancient nations discovered in pitting and watching two animals fight against each other or whether animal against man, and it eventually evolved into an arena of competition where we match human contestants and teams to see who could attain “excellence”.

An astute secular observer once wisely expressed the notion that “organized sports are the perfection of the unnecessary”. It stirs our innermost emotions by misguiding those healthy feelings towards worthless objectives and empty accomplishment. When these artificial goals are measured up against the nobility of our spirit and what it can attain in its most purposeful way, we are left with nothing but the shameful failure to utilize our talents in a meaningful mode. The traits of courage, swiftness, loyalty, guile and strength that G-d implanted within the animal kingdom weren’t meant for us to emulate on the same level as that of an animal. We are to employ them to achieve our highest mission of serving G-d by using these qualities towards attaining perfection of character. Facing challenges with courage, grabbing at every opportunity for spiritual growth, cleverly avoiding the pitfalls that seek to encroach on our territory and maintaining strong motivation in fending off those forces that attempt to tackle our resolve, which seek to deter us from our greatest ambitions, are all part of the “game plan” we need to “win” at life. From the moment man partook from the Tree of Knowledge our clear perception of where our goals lie became obscured. We must struggle in the confused state we now exist in to set real goals for ourselves. Yet man who is now exposed to the forces of material desire, the need for adulation and the lure of raw power must find his way through the jungle of obstacles in setting his sights on the pursuit of spiritual excellence. This ‫עירוב טוב ורע‬, the “mixture” of good and bad, that lack of clarity in knowing who we truly are and where we should be headed and the battle we must endure in discovering that truth, lies at the root of the plague of Arov.

Last week’s Torah reading portrayed how the midwives saved countless Jewish babies from infanticide. I would like to take a step backwards in the Jewish lifecycle and delve into the precursor for Jewish babies, and what is commonly termed ‘The Shidduch Crisis’. The difficulty of finding a mate is famously compared to ‫קריאת ים סוף‬, the splitting of the Reed Sea, and the exit from the Egyptian bondage in general. We are blessed with countless organizations, websites, apps and retreats, devoted to making it easier for people to find each other across the globe.

In the past few years, we have even been presented with demographic calculations, showing us that if we only we did X, all will be solved. In my eyes, any plan that can bring simcha to even one additional couple has merit. However, I can’t help but wonder if we have lost sight of a most critical ingredient for solving this crisis, one that cannot be solved with mathematical formulas, or even well-meaning shadchanim. If we investigate the unfolding of the bondage in Egypt, as described in the Torah, it is difficult to pinpoint the turning point when the redemption

actually began. Was it when Moshe initially approached Pharaoh? Perhaps the beginning of the plagues? Or was it at ‫מכת בכורות‬, the ultimate strike against the Egyptian firstborns? The Sefas Emes however, identifies the dawn of redemption in the following words in our Torah reading. “And I will remove you from under the burden of Egypt” (6:6) The word used for burden - ‫סבלות‬, can in Hebrew also indicate acceptance of suffering. Explains the Sefas Emes, the Jewish People were at a point of despair, they had lost all hope and were resigned to their fate. Under such circumstances, no future was possible, they were down for the count. Hashem promised that He would remove them from this silent acceptance, He would power them with hope that they need not accept this situation, that they could move forward and be free. He expresses a similar notion earlier: “And the Children of Israel groaned because of the work and they cried out” (2:23) Up to that point, the Jews were so deep in exile that they had lost their sense of self and couldn’t cry out. Finally, with the rise of the new harsher Pharaoh, they garnered inner strength, realized their predicament and out of deep pain, cried out in prayer. It is at that point, when they reawakened and had a fresh resilience to state that they hadn’t given up, that the redemption could commence. Perhaps the least openly discussed facet of long-term dating, is the despair, the shear loneliness and the feelings of abandonment. Harrowing questions are asked: “Will I ever get married?” “Where do I belong in a community so understandably focused on family?” “Does anyone really care?” It is horrifying to hear that so many

singles are questioned “Do you want to get married?”, or “Why are you so picky?”, or are cynically dismissed as long-term failures. 99% of singles legitimately want to be happily married. It is simply that at times that goal seems terribly illusive, the challenges and fear of taking that leap of faith, too risky. Our job is not to jab. As family, as a community, our work is to enable, to embrace, to reignite the sense of hope, to make sure that singles do not feel abandoned. This should not emanate out of sometimes condescending pity, but from a place of humanity, ‫“וירא‬ ”‫בסבלותם‬. I am one to speak from experience. Undoubtedly, as a previous ‘alter-bochur’, I probably hold some interesting dating records. As others in a similar predicament can relate to, I lived the emotional roller coaster of hope, pain and despair. I grew through challenging periods of focused therapy, all to get me to that finishing line. I am not embarrassed by these details; singles are talented individuals who must muster their internal stamina to do all that is necessary to achieve a goal. But what was it that gave me the strength to endure, to take that leap of faith? It wasn’t necessarily the shadchanim (nothing personal), but the families and individuals who pro-actively invited me every Shabbos, without waiting for me to call first. The people who treated me as a capable, normal person, instead of damaged goods. They kept alive that glimmer of hope, self-worth, and courage, to reach the Chupah and build a beautiful family. Critique is all too easy, but instilling hope and anticipation, together with sensitive mentoring to make the right decisions, are the real tools that will enable ultimate simcha and redemption for singles and for all of the Jewish People.

vera’ei, it is our zechus to present a new program, entitled Kinyan Chochma, a daily limud of mussar and hadracha culled from various mussar seforim, Tomer Devorah, Orchos Chaim l’Harosh, Orchos Tzaddikim and others…” Sample editions of the Kinyan Chochma kuntress were distributed so that lomdim can begin learning it daily and take tests on it monthly. “Transformational Chiddush of Dirshu: Ol Torah” A powerful major address was also delivered by Dayan Yonasan Abraham, shlita, a member of the London Beis Din and Rav of the Toras Chaim Shul in Hendon, North West London. The final drasha was a deep, comprehensive speech by HaGaon HaRav Binyomin Eisenberger, shlita, Rav of Kehal Heichal Hatefillah in Boro Park. Throughout Shabbos luminaries such as HaGaon HaRav Reuven Feinstein, shlita, Rosh Yeshiva of the Yeshiva of Staten Island, HaGaon Harav Yitzchok Sorotzkin, shlita, HaGaon HaRav Dovid Olewski, shlita, Rosh Yeshivas Ger, and HaGaon HaRav Yechiel Mechel Steinmetz, shlita, Skverer Dayan of Boro Park, delivered prominent drashos and shiurim. These and other convention highlights will be covered extensively in the upcoming weeks. Perhaps Rav Yitzchok Sorotzkin encapsulated it best when he said, “Dirshu has been mechadesh many things, but perhaps the overwhelming, transformational ideal of Dirshu is the concept of kabbolas ol - accepting the yoke of limud haTorah on oneself, regardless of what is going on in one’s life! A person has an ol to learn, to chazer, to know. That ol is the integral component to success in learning and Dirshu has cultivated it in a heretofore unprecedented fashion!”

the Crown Plaza Hotel in Stamford where the convention was held was “K’nacking” throughout the Shabbos. Despite the fact that the shiurim and oneg Shabbos went so late, the beis medrash was packed - late at night, early in the morning, throughout the afternoon. “The olam here is not mehader in sheinah b’Shabbos taanug because their greatest delight is to sit and learn,” Rav Schustal said. Two extraordinarily riveting drashos were also given at shalosh seudos by HaRav Yitzchok Zalman Gips, shlita, Rav of Beis Medrash Birchas Avrohom of Boro Park and Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva Nahardaah, and HaRav Zev Smith, shlita, a popular Maggid Shiur with Irgun Shiurei Torah and Dirshu. There were so many lessons imparted by the various luminaries who addressed both the men and the

women throughout Shabbos. A more detailed treatment of the historic nature of some of those speeches will be forthcoming in the weeks to come. Kinyan Chochma: The Primacy of Enhancing Yiras Shomayim The highlight of the Shabbos was the melava malka siyum on Masechta Bava Basra. Busses from major Jewish populations brought lomdei Torah and ohavei Torah from major centers. The crowd swelled to nearly 2000! Harav Shmuel Choueka, shlita, Rav of Congregation Ohel Simcha of Deal and a popular Daf HaYomi B’Halacha Maggid Shiur, explained how the halacha program not only enhances the observance of halacha but the myriad details in the Mishnah Berurah with the biurim and musafim additions in the Dirshu Mishnah Berurah also enhance one’s yiras shomayim! The hadran on Masechta Bava Metziah was given by Rav Berel Povarsky. Once again, Rav Berel, with his deep love of Torah, managed to draw the massive crowd into his intimate world of ahavas haTorah. The kaddish was recited by HaRav Moshe Mordechai Lowy, shlita, Rav, Agudas Yisrael of Toronto. The topic of yiras shomayim was also a prominent theme in the address given by Rav Dovid Hofstedter, Nasi of Dirshu. Rav Dovid related that on the one hand the tremendous increase in Torah in our generation built on the ashes of the Holocaust is unprecedented. On the other hand, however, the way the host culture has invaded even our own heimishe circles is also unprecedented! In a pain-filled voice, Rav Dovid lamented how even in our own publications we have allowed ideas, advertisements and a culture of pure superficiality, jealousy and greed to infiltrate. The antidote to this is to cultivate our own pnimiyus and our own yiras shomayim. “Therefore morai v’rabosai, achai

It was Mincha on Shabbos, a Shabbos that nearly 1,000 lomdei Torah in Dirshu’s myriad programs will never forget. During the Shabbos morning tefillah, aliyos are given to the attending Gedolei Yisrael. Only one aliyah is sold, shlishi on Mincha of Shabbos. That aliyah is not sold for money, because the only real “legal tender” for lomdei Dirshu is Torah! The bidding started: 1,000 blatt, 2,000... At the last Dirshu Shabbos shlishi sold for 3,200. This year it first went to 3,000, then 4,000… There was furious bidding until finally, after some twenty minutes the aliyah was sold for a whopping 10,000 blatt Gemara to be learned by this time next year. 10,000 blatt by one person! The person then gave the aliyah to Dirshu’s Nasi, Rav Dovid Hofstedter as hakoras hatov for the transformation that his life underwent as a result of being part of the Kinyan Shas learning program. Hundreds of Thousands of Aggregate Torah! Yes, the mind boggling undertaking of one person to learn 10,000 blatt in one year was a highlight of the convention but there were tens of other highlights. Perhaps the greatest highlight was the very fact that there was so much Torah in one room. Hundreds of thousands of aggregate blatt Gemara and blatt Shulchan Aruch and Mishnah Berurah, hundreds of thousands of hours spent learning and chazering for the bechinos, hundreds of thousands of hours of mesiras nefesh by the wives of lomdei Dirshu to enable their husbands to devote the requisite hours upon hours of learning and chazering necessary to successfully learn with accountability. In his powerful remarks at shalosh seudos, HaGaon HaRav Dovid Schustal, shlita, Rosh Yeshiva of Beth Medrash Govoha of Lakewood, gave voice to this as he called the lomdei Torah in the room “Kodesh Hakadoshim” who

I

n the gray area that it is the arena of spying it is thought by the outsider that a spy works alone. Rarely is that the case. The British used this to their advantage during WWII to set up the Double Cross System. Once a spy was captured in England he was told to cooperate or face a firing squad. Most chose the former and sent back fake messages to their German “handlers.” In many cases the British set up fake subagents and were feeding the German intelligence false information. One particular instance stood out when they had to “kill” off one the fake subagents to make the story even more plausible. Ironically, 160 years earlier this idea of a spy ring was used against the British in the American Revolutionary War. Finding out the plans of the British Army was the task of the Culper Spy Ring. As early as the summer of 1776 the British occupied New York City and were preparing for General George Washington to launch an attack. After a series of engagements, the British under General Howe forced the Continental Army to retreat to New Jersey. Washington badly needed information on the British movements in New York and, after a few failed attempts to use soldiers, he turned to civilians. Nathaniel Sackett was selected; his contact in the army was Lieutenant Colonel Benjamin Tallmadge. This set the stage for an entire spy ring to be created.

Code names weren’t used extensively until the 20th century so the fact that the name Samuel Culper was used for multiple people had its intended effect of confusing the British. The main spies in the network were Abraham Woodhull, aka Samuel Culper Sr., and Robert Townsend, aka Samuel Culper Jr. In total, about twenty individuals made up the Culper Spy Ring. To keep it as secret as possible George Washington himself did not know the identities of the spies. The exceptions were the men in the army, and Tallmadge used the code name John Bolton (not to be confused with the future American ambassador to the UN) for himself. A system was set up to get the information from the spies to Washington’s camp in upstate New York, and in 1779 this was changed to express riders hand-delivering the reports. The practices they used were very similar to the ones used by spies during WWII and the Cold War. Dead drops, codes, and invisible ink were among the bag of tricks employed by the spy ring which was impressive considering the time in history. Abraham Woodhull’s spying career was almost over before it started. In October 1778 he was poking around the British defenses in New York on one of his earliest missions. He ran into a camp of Americans fighting for the British called Loyalists and before he knew it they

had him detained. Thankfully, his answers to why he was in the area proved to be satisfactory and he was released. However, he was shaken by the incident and later wrote: “I received their threats for coming there that made me almost tremble knowing my situation and business.” If his true identity had been discovered he would have been hanged. To appear loyal to the king, Woodhull took an oath of allegiance and ran a boarding house in Manhattan for British soldiers. Gleaning information by posing as an inquisitive farmer he sent back reports on British and Loyalist numbers and movements. One report was seven pages long and detailed British naval strength, supply problems, number of total troops in New York, possible reinforcements, and other intelligence with military importance. During the British occupation of New York the British top spy, Major Andre, visited Benedict Arnold several times which indicated that Arnold was going to surrender West Point without a fight. Soon the Americans found out about it through the spy ring and the rest is history. There were other traitors in the Continental Army that were exposed by Townsend and other members of the ring. Irish-born Hercules Mulligan became a legend in his role in the Culper Ring. Working as a subagent and using his slave Cato as a courier, Mulligan used his profession

to his advantage. As the best tailor in the area British soldiers and officers would send their clothes to him for cleaning and upkeep. If they all needed their clothes back by a certain date he would deduce that this was when they would be on the move, and he would send a message to General Washington. Sometimes the British would let their guard down and let Mulligan in on some of the British plans. One time an officer told him that he was planning to kidnap Washington the very next day. Thanks to this information Mulligan prevented the capture of our first future president. In 1781 Mulligan’s older brother Hugh was in charge of getting boats ready to intercept Washington off the coast of Connecticut. Once again Hercules saved the day and the American convoy was rerouted. Mulligan was arrested by traitor Benedict Arnold but was soon released because there was no hard evidence implicating him as a spy. Perhaps the most secret and valuable agent in the ring was Robert Townsend. Very few knew the real identity of Samuel Culper Jr. and he wanted to keep it that way. Among the many dispatches of letters indicating the next moves of the British Army came the information that the British wanted to flood the American economy with counterfeit money. In his letter Townsend wrote that the British had acquired “several reams of paper made for the

The traditional 5-day, 40-hour work week accompanied by the 2-day weekend seems to be ingrained in nearly every business culture worldwide. Some of the trendier new companies whose production environments can support it have bucked this system with schedule flexibility and work from home policies that shift the focus from the number of hours you work to getting your work done. Ultimately though, the goal is to get a solid workweek out of employees and to profit. If we compare the two approaches, I suspect that the expectations in terms of work effort are very similar in both environments. Both the super chilled hipster company where denim and hoodies rule the boardroom and the more traditional punch clock environment where morning traffic issues can lose you a lunch break expect you to work and accomplish. At the crux of the debate

between the two approaches, however, would be the dispute over results. So where did the 5-day work week and 2-day weekend come from? Who decided on the 8-hour day? Has it always been this way? Historically, the 40-hour workweek (8 hours a day, 5 days a week) is the result of the battle cry of workers during the industrial revolution. Industry, manufacturing, machines, companies, and technology changed the nature of work completely. “Eight hours for work, eight hours for rest, eight hours for what we will” was the mantra of a movement that eventually led to the introduction of The Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 which established laws we now take for granted like minimum wage, overtime laws and restrictions on child labor (2 out of 3 ain’t bad). Historical records seem to imply that the trend of working harder than in previous cen-

turies began in the 19th century. The Pre-Capitalist work patterns had more days off, a slower pace, and long naps during the day! In medieval England, nearly a third of the year was leisure time. 14th century manorial records indicate that 150 to 175 days a year made up the average work year, which is 1400 to 1600 hours based on their workday, compared to our 2000 plus! Biblically speaking, however, the Jewish workweek is 6 days. “Six days shall work be done” which regardless of the number of hours, brings to mind a whole new question and realization. Forget the number of hours and days. Where does the 7-day week come from? If you paid attention in school, you know that Hashem created the world in 6 days, rested on the 7th and BAM, we have our week. That said, ever wonder why everyone else does it that way? Why 7 days? Why is the secular “weekend” in sync with our Shabbos? History books give G-d & the Jews partial credit for the 7-day week, but we know where it comes from. The question again is why the world has adopted it too? In case you think I’m crazy, don’t think changing the “week” has not been attempted. After the French Revolution, there was an attempt to institute a 10-day week which lasted

about a decade and was overturned by Napoleon. In 1929, the USSR adopted a five-day week model with 72 weeks per year. When that didn’t work, they shifted to six days per week in 1931, but eventually dropped it and returned to seven days in 1940. So now that I have met my quota for number of words required for this article, here is my main point: TGIF, Thank G-d it’s Friday, that the modern world has adopted as the last day of the regular work week. TGIF that coincides with the beginning of our Shabbos. TGIF that parallels the cycle of our Jewish week, week after week, allowing us to live our lives and follow our routines in parallel with what the world has also adopted as “a week.” You think taking off for Yomim Tovim is tough? Imagine if the world had gone with a 10-day week and Shabbos was bouncing around in the middle of it each “week.” TGIF indeed! My son Abie is what you’d call a “great catch.” I’m not just saying that on my own – I’ve been told that many times over the years. He’s fine and polite, tall and good looking, smart and ambitious – the whole package. I’ve been very aware of how easily it could be for him to become con-

ceited, and my husband and I have always tried to stay away from those ideas and nurture his inner qualities. Now that he’s dating, we’re finding that it’s becoming a problem. I’ll tell you why. We get many wonderful resumes to keep him busy. Not once has a young woman gone back to the shadchan and said that she is disquits, sometimes right away and, on three occasions, after dating for a while. Basically, what happens is that he becomes very interested in someone, tells me and my husband how wonderful she is, and then, when it’s time to take the next step toward “tachlis,” he says something like, “How do I know there isn’t anyone better out there for me to marry?” Well, how does anyone know? We don’t know. After the first two times he said this, I figured he needed to date more and meet more women to be sure about who is right for him. But now I’m concerned that no one will ever be good enough for him. What do we tell our son to get him to stop “shopping around” for the “best”?

ou seem to be perceptive parents but somewhat overinvolved. In the past, the two of you have tried to stress his inner qualities so that his external attractive qualities are perceived by him as external. Good for you for focusing on character development as he grew up. Your son is now an adult and while it’s good that he is sharing his reactions with the two of you, I think you should lay off. From your words, it sounds like you are eager for him to settle down and commit. It’s not just about commitment phobia and too many choices on his part. Encourage him to get a dating coach, and/or mentor, and/or rebbi to discuss dating, personal development and his needs for compatibility. Hopefully, there will be trust and open communication and as a result, it will lead to healthy self-understanding, realistic dating and opening up to developing a deep relationship. Keep talking and fostering a good relationship but let someone else work on the issue you have raised. It will be healthier that way.

Next time he threatens to drop a perfectly suitable shidduch because he’s in Shopping Mode, you can say, “Not so fast.” Ask him to take out his list and describe how the current shidduch does or does not meet his personal criteria. You may not be able to change his mind, but hopefully it will cause him to give the next young lady more serious, measured consideration.

Ask him what values are important to him and how he goes about seeking those out. It’s all about creating a meaning-

ful dialogue with him about life in general. He will begin to calm down and begin to date with an open heart and mind.

She was also incredibly understanding of him. His family had money and his parents were incredibly generous to him. They bought him a home, paid his mortgage, sent him on lavish vacations with his wife and kids. He wanted for nothing. He and his wife would go out one to two evenings weekly for dinner at various fancy restaurants… going into the city for dinner and a Broadway show was nothing other than a typical Thursday night. ave you heard of the catchphrase “FOMO”? It stands for “Fear of Missing Out.” Based on your email and your perception of the situation, I have gathered that one of two scenarios is most likely the culprit. Scenario A: Abie’s ego is calling the shots and it is screaming “more, more, more! I want to see how good I can feel around all different types of women.” When his ego is no longer gratified, it demands “next!” You don’t mention how old Abie is, but regardless, on the surface, his desire for more strikes me as somewhat immature. Scenario B is in the neighborhood of anxiety and fear of commitment. Oh, and there a third scenario. Scenario C: Abie doesn’t want to get married right now. Either he knows it and isn’t telling you, or he doesn’t know it himself. He was blessed with the complete package: looks, brains, ambition, height… I have no doubt that mothers and their daughters are throwing themselves at Abie (and his resume). I can have anything I want. “Yes, you can have anything you want and you’re never happy. You don’t know the feeling of contentment. I feel really bad for you.” I feel badly for Abie, too. He is having a hard time feeling content with anyone he is with and I do wonder if he feels content or at peace within himself. You asked what you should tell your son to get him to stop “shopping around.” Here is my best advice. Tell him the pattern you have noticed. “You have been serious with several girls and you always end the relationships wondering if there is better out there.” Ask him lovingly and respectfully, “What do you think this is about?” Tell him you are concerned about him. You want to see him happy and in a warm, wonderful relationship. Finally, suggest that he see a therapist to help him figure out what is going on within him and eventually support him as he becomes serious with someone he genuinely likes. You are the parents and will decide what you want to say, but I might also say something like, “We think you should take a break from

for themselves. My work as a homeroom teacher has taken me into homes that has, by just crossing the threshold, taken me out of my comfort zone. In one case a single parent had been working such long hours that his ability to shop for basic food items was severely limited. I recently asked a student of mine to see me in the teachers’ room. When he arrived I presented him with a fistful of coupons. Having visited his home only a few weeks earlier I knew just how much he was in need of them. He matter-of-factly accepted them and went on his way. There are places in the country where poverty isn’t recognized by the naked, untrained eye. Visitors from overseas are unlikely to be shown the seedier sides of towns. Yet the fact remains that in many places, particularly in the periphery, poverty is a constant reminder of the inequality facing so many Israelis. There are over 24,000 residents here in Ma’alot. If the figures I’ve quoted are correct, and I have no reason to believe they aren’t, there are thousands of Ma’alotians among us living below the poverty line. It’s not the poverty of the homeless, rather it’s a standard of living that most people reading this would find untenable, but a standard of living, nonetheless, that those with less have become used to. I was given a warm welcome when I walked into my student’s home. He lives with his mother

and grandfather, who at the age of almost 80 still works a full shift at one of the local factories. There is another brother who lives with a foster family in a nearby city. Since the age of ten my student has had to fend and advocate for himself. Doctors, shopping, registering for programs, he does it all. I find his outlook on life remarkable, his optimism infectious. He doesn’t seek favor and he concentrates hard on his studies. He is unaware of the moral boost he infuses in me and others. I often ponder life in his shoes. It is not a comfortable thought. His attitude to life and his willingness to persevere will hopefully help him find a way out of the forest of his life where the trees have snapped and fallen across his path turning every step forward into an obstacle course. I pray that his uncomplicated resolve and determination will take him far in what I am sure will be a successful professional life. On the school trip I keenly observed the students during their chants. They seemed to break into “Ma’alot! Ma’alot! What type of neighborhood are we? Poor!” only when they were among people they didn’t know. It was like a show they were performing for strangers. I’m positive my student will one day look back and laugh, not at humor he and his friends were generating, but that he had beaten the odds. family to friends I asked for money. My pitch was simple: I told them I was collecting money for children at risk. Everyone I asked came through with grace and generosity. I returned to the Galil with over $5,000 in my pocket. I donated the money to my school with the express purpose of creating an account whose major purpose was, and is, to provide food coupons needy students can use at the school cafeteria. Discreet notifications were sent to homeroom teachers, who forwarded lists of kids whose families are in difficult financial straits. The welfare ministry helps many of these poor families, but a little extra help is always welcome. The coupons are small enough to fit into the palm of one’s hand. Whereas their purchasing power is small – a sandwich and drink – they are enough to keep a child from going hungry during the day. The value of the coupon amounts to little more than a dollar, yet multiplied by school days in a year that dollar translates into close to $200 a year. More to the point, kids who eat during the day study better. Don’t be fooled into thinking that sending a kid to school with two slices of bread and chummus or chocolate spread is beyond the range of any parent. In some cases it is: I’ve seen more than enough empty shelves on my homeroom visits that make fridges seem unused. Over the years I’ve noticed that students aren’t that adept at preparing lunches

n a recent school trip our students would occasionally break into song and dance chanting over and over with fervor and joy, “Oh...Ma’alot! Ma’alot! What type of neighborhood are we? Poor!” On the word “poor” they would break into cackles of laughter. The irony of the chant is that there are more than a handful of students who regularly come to school hungry. They, too, laugh at the chant, but for them poverty is a way of life. It would be unfair to label Ma’alot as poor. The town is thriving: factories and new apartments are being built, new roads, railway lines and shopping centers are under construction. Yet underneath the surface lies an underbelly that is prevalent not only in Ma’alot, but elsewhere in the country. In a January 2016 article, YNET reported that there had been a drastic rise in Israeli poverty rates. In the last 20 years the rate has risen from 14 to 21%. In a recent report Israel was ranked by the OECD as the country with the highest rates of poverty among its members. This is reflected in the pay gap between rich and poor, where Israel ranks third behind the U.S. and Mexico. Ha’aretz newspaper brought the figures into a perspective everyone could understand when they reported that “one in three children [was] living in poverty.” While visiting New York last year I took upon myself a difficult, but in my eyes necessary, mission: from

Letting Go By Chasida Teichman CLC AAPC

Nomi, a dear friend of mine, is calling to catch up with the usual. After we exhaust the topics of children, health, Shidduchim, or the absence of same, we segue to other, maybe safer topics. We talk about the meaning of true friends, and then she drops this bombshell. “I used to be friendly with someone, and it was a very troubling friendship. I think that I was taken advantage of to such a degree that I could not sustain the relationship. But I like to think of myself as a good Jew, and

I’m supposed to forgive her, right?” I don’t answer; I’m not G-d. “But I can’t. I just don’t have the capacity to do that; there has been way too much pain.” She is quiet, hoping, I think, that I will agree. I don’t. I am not G-d. “So you know what I think?” she continues, “I will forgive her. I will stretch and go way beyond the realm of possible. I will forgive her, but I will never forget.” I think I got that. Not long after, a client I will call Chevy walks in. She presented a com-

plex family dynamic. She expressed her feelings that a sister had betrayed her one time too many, and that the relationship between the two is beyond repair. But as the sister attempts to reach out and rebuild, Chevy is undecided as to whether she can cooperate. “Why do I need to reconcile with my sister?” she asks. I do not answer. I am not G-d. After thinking it through, she concedes somewhat, and says, “I will choose to forget. But I will never forgive.” Only G-d can decide the right-or wrong of the flipped approaches in the very different set of circumstances. Resentment and bitterness eat away at the soul. Anyone party to an acrimonious relationship, suffers, as the toxicity which originates inwards spreads outwards. There really aren’t any winners – everyone loses. The words forgive and forget are enigmatic - the give and the take in them that is. Why do you give when you for”give”, but you’re on the receiving end when you for”get”? Why is a magnanimous spirit more generous than an intentional lapse of memory? I don’t have a clue. Only a very small fraction of G-d’s awesome world is interpreted through our intelligence; there is more that we don’t know, than what we do. It has been suggested that one reason why G-d chose to create us with two hands (and not only one) is to imply that with one we hold on, and with the other we let go. Inner serenity is achieved when the symbiotic relationship between the two is established. Very very often, it is so difficult but even more beneficial for us if we can just let it go. I recently heard a beautiful story regarding the venerable Rabbi Nesanel Quinn of Yeshiva Torah V’daas. When he was 91, he was informed of

an elderly gentleman, a resident of one of the local nursing homes who was despondent. He was 75. And so Rabbi Quinn volunteered to visit and revive the spirits of the “elderly” gentleman. At the conclusion of the visit, Rabbi Quinn stood at the entrance of the nursing home waiting for the driver who had left him there, as he went to bring the car closer to the entrance. The manager of the home sees an elderly man at the entrance, and thinking it’s a resident attempting to leave, pulls him indoors. As much as Rabbi Quinn protests that he is just visiting, his words fall on deaf ears as he is being forcefully escorted towards the office. The matter is soon resolved when the driver appears on the scene. In the car, Rabbi Quinn is disturbed by only one thing – no, he is not angry at the manager, no – he will not sue the nursing home. He let go of all the resentment; he was not bothered by “age discrimination”. But, he wondered, “Why did this happen to me”? After thinking about it some more, he concludes,” It must be because I wasn’t smiling! If I had been smiling, they would have known for sure that I am not a resident of this home!” He surely would have stated: “Let it go! Let it go! Being old never bothered me anyway!” The cheerful Rabbi Quinn, who would not hold a grudge, but looked to give others the benefit of the situation, in so many situations, passed away at the age of 95. The Dawn of Trump The Key Players in the New Administration The president’s Cabinet traditionally includes the vice president and the heads of 15 executive departments: Agriculture, Commerce, Defense, Education, Energy, Health and Human Services, Homeland Security, Housing and Urban Development, Interior, Justice (the Attorney General), Labor, State, Transportation, Treasury, and Veterans Affairs. Other officials also hold Cabinet-rank, including the White House Chief of Staff, the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, the Director of the Office of Management and Budget, the Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers, the Administrator of the Small Business Administration, and the U.S. Trade Representative. Once confirmed, Cabinet officials are called by the title “Secretary.” The one exception is the attorney general, who is called by that title and leads the Department of Justice. The Cabinet members meet weekly with the president to advise him and inform him of matters related to their position and expertise.

They are also vital to the order of presidential succession provided something happens to the commander-in-chief. Who can the president appoint to these positions? Well, it seems he can choose whomever he desires, provided they are not a member of Congress at the time. Although Cabinet members are nominated by the president – or president-elect – they need to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate in a majority vote. Throughout the years there has been a healthy back-and-forth between the executive and legislative branches when it comes to Cabinet nominations. 2017 is no exception. Friday’s inauguration will bring Donald Trump into the Oval Office but many of his Cabinet appointees will be swinging in the wind, waiting for their approvals by the Senate, which could take days and even weeks. In all likelihood there will be a few Cabinet picks that will be confirmed by the Senate by Friday. Republicans are hoping that retired General James Mattis will be confirmed defense secretary, retired General John Kelly as home-

he Cabinet. It’s a part of American life that dates back to our first U.S. President George Washington. Washington would call meetings with his Secretary of State, the Secretary of the Treasury, the Secretary of War, and the Attorney General to advise him on issues. The term “Cabinet” dates back to James Madison, who described these meetings as the “president’s Cabinet” – and the rest, as they say, is history. The U.S. Constitution has several provisions that refer to “principal officers” of the “executive departments.” Indeed, the Constitution, in Article II, Section 2, authorizes the president to “appoint Ambassadors, other public Ministers and Consuls […].” In addition, the president “may require the opinion, in writing, of the principal officer in each of the executive departments, upon any subject relating to the duties of their respective offices[.]” Taken together, these provisions give the president the necessary authority to appoint executive department officials and partake of their advice on important policy matters.

If Senate approval is stamped and sealed, Donald Trump – who by then will be the 45th president of the United States – will swear them into his Cabinet on Friday.

And Trump has a lot on his plate. In terms of foreign policy, the Middle East is in flames, ISIS is still out of control, North Korea has been acting belligerent, Russia has been aggressive and hostile towards the U.S., China is feeling threatened, and some countries to our south have been wrestling with failing economies. elections have left some very deep scars that are not close to healing. People are still hurting for jobs, fearful for their health insurance coverage, and terrorism still threatens our shores. Donald Trump has never held political office and before his run for presidency was most known for his role in “The Apprentice.” But he was able to rally Americans for his cause and swept into the White House, knocking down a baffled Hillary Clinton in his wake. Who has he chosen to advise, inform and help form policies? Here are the top people who President-elect Donald Trump has nominated to comprise his presidential Cabinet.

During the hearings this week, Tillerson was grilled about many things. Among them, the TPP (“I do not oppose [it]”), he called Russia’s invasion of Ukraine an “illegal action,” and admitted that “the risk of climate change does exist.” Trump has said in the past that climate change is a “hoax.” Tillerson also said that the U.S. needs to have a tougher line on Moscow: “Russia must know that we will be accountable to our commitments and those of our allies, and that Russia must be held to account for its actions.” He also said that the Iran nuclear deal necessitates a “full review.” Interestingly, Tillerson admitted that he has only spoken to Trump about world affairs in general terms and that they have “not yet” spoken about Russian policy.

Tillerson is an oilman. He has been the CEO of Exxon Mobil since 2006 and has been with the company since 1975. Talk about staying-power. This is the only company Tillerson has ever worked for; he started at Exxon right after college. The 64-year-old is also an Eagle Scout who served as a past president of the Boy Scouts of America. He has no government experience.

In Trump’s Words “The thing I like best about Rex Tillerson is that he has vast experience at dealing successfully with all types of foreign governments,” Trump tweeted. Tillerson is experienced with making deals – many of them with some of the governments he’ll be interacting with as secretary of state. Road to Confirmation Trump may appreciate that Tillerson has been dealing with many foreign countries, but others see that as an undesirable trait. In 2012, Putin awarded him the “Order of Friendship” – a high honor in the Kremlin, but Russia is not necessarily on America’s list of “besties” at the moment. In fact, during his hearing this week, Tillerson was asked if he would call Putin a war criminal. “I would not use that term,” Tillerson answered Republican Marco Rubio. “Those are very, very serious charges to make, and I would want to have

Who He Is Mnuchin is a former senior executive at Goldman Sachs and a hedge fund manager who bought the failed mortgage lender IndyMac from the gov-

ernment in 2009. He spun it off into OneWest and sold it for a huge profit five years later. The 54-year-old is also a Hollywood producer whose credits include Avatar, American Sniper, and the X-Men movies. He has three children and has no government experience.

Why Trump Likes Him Well, he’s a successful businessman. Trump also rewards loyalty. Mnuchin jumped on the Trump train early on and joined the campaign as national finance chairman back in April, just as Trump was shifting from relying on his own funds to setting up a more traditional fundraising apparatus. Mnuchin made clear early on he wanted the Treasury job – and Trump heard him loud and clear.

Interesting Fact If confirmed, Mnuchin, who is Jewish, will be taking over for Secretary of State Jack Lew, who is also Jewish.

Some will see Mnuchin as a symbol of Wall Street and all its demerits. After all, didn’t Trump rail against Hillary Clinton and her speeches at Goldman Sachs while on the campaign trail? Democrats will see the foreclosures that came about from the Indymac saga as a long trail of tears. But even so, Mnuchin will probably win over Senate Republicans and will be confirmed in the next week or so.

General James Mattis

Who He Is Mattis is a four-star Marine Corps general who led U.S. Central Command from 2010 to 2013. He commanded forces in both the Afghanistan and Iraq wars after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Mattis also worked with General David Petraeus to produce the field manual on battling counterinsurgents in Iraq. The 66-year-old has 44 years of experience in the military.

In Trump’s Words “We are going to appoint ‘Mad Dog’ Mattis as our Secretary of Defense,” Trump said at

Mattis has famously told Marines under his command, “Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everyone you meet.” He has also said, “I don’t lose any sleep at night over the potential for failure. I cannot even spell the word.” In that same vein, he has said: “Marines don’t know how to spell the word defeat.” Mattis has stressed that Marines need to use their brains in the battlefield. “You are part of the world’s most feared and trusted force. Engage your brain before you engage your weapon.” Echoing that sentiment, he has said, “The most important 6 inches on the battlefield is between your ears.” In April, Mattis said in remarks at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think tank, “The Iranian regime, in my mind, is the single most enduring threat to stability and peace in the Middle East.” He added, “Among all the issues facing us in the Middle East, I think Iran is actually foremost. And yet at the same time, it appears here in Washington that we’ve forgotten how to keep certain issues foremost.” Back in February of 2005, comments he made about using force against the Taliban in Afghanistan generated some controversy. “You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around for five years because they didn’t wear a veil. You know, guys like that ain’t got no manhood left anyway,” said Mattis. “So it’s … a lot of fun to shoot them. Actually, it’s a lot of fun to fight. … I’ll be right up front with you — I like brawling.” He later admitted that he should have chosen his words more carefully. At his Senate hearing last week, Mattis also had some sharp words. “Senator, I assure you that nickname was given to me by the press and some you have experienced similar occasions with the press where they perhaps they didn’t get it quite right,” he quipped, referring to his “Mad Dog” nickname. He also said at the hearing, “America has two fundamental powers. One is the power of intimidation. I was part of it and America will defend herself and our idea, this experiment that we call America. And that’s all it is, is an experiment in democracy. But the other power I think that perhaps we have used less in recent years, last 20 years maybe, is the power of inspiration. And I think that the power of inspiration of America at times has got to be employed just as strongly.”

During his hearing, Sessions said he would oppose a ban on Muslim immigration and that waterboarding is “improper and illegal,” both of which Trump has supported over the course of the election. Sessions also said he would recuse himself in a criminal investigation of Hillary Clinton into the handling of her emails, saying that political issues cannot be involved with criminal justice.

Probably.

With Republicans generally behind him, Sessions will in all probability be confirmed. With this likelihood, The Washington Post listed Sessions as a “top five power player in the country” in an analysis written by Alabama Republican consultant Brett Buchanan.

Who He Is Sessions has represented Alabama in the Senate for 20 years, building up a record as a staunch critic of illegal immigration and expanded legal immigration. He’s been a conservative all around, opposing the Obama administration at nearly every turn. Before his election to the Senate, Sessions served as a federal prosecutor and then Alabama attorney general. He might have had a lifetime appointment to the federal bench had the Senate not rejected his nomination in 1987 over allegations that he made racist comments and praised the KKK while criticizing the NAACP and the ACLU. The 70-year-old has served in the U.S. Senate since 1997 and has held public office in Alabama beginning in 1981.

In Trump’s Words “The president-elect has been unbelievably impressed with Senator Sessions and his phenomenal record as Alabama’s attorney general and U.S. attorney,” a Trump transition statement released recently read. “It is no wonder the people of Alabama re-elected him without opposition.” Once again, Trump is awarding loyalty. Sessions was the first senator to endorse Trump and has been a close advisor ever since. His aides as well have garnered top positions in the Trump transition team. He and Trump are on the same page when it comes to immigration reform and citizenship for undocumented immigrants. Blast From The Past Sessions’ problems back in the 1980s came back to haunt him this time around. At his 1986 hearing before the Senate, Adam Serwer wrote for The Atlantic, “witnesses testified that Sessions referred to a black attorney as ‘boy,’ described the Voting Rights Act as ‘intrusive,’ attacked the NAACP and ACLU as ‘un-American’ for ‘forcing civil rights down the throats of people,’ joked that he thought the Ku Klux Klan was ok until he found out they smoked marijuana, and referred to a white attorney who took on voting-rights cases as a ‘traitor to his race.’” In his defense, in 1986 Sessions said, “I am not the Jeff Sessions my detractors have tried to create,” he told

He also said that he was not for the “mass collection of data” of Americans and would not see religion as the only factor in targeting terrorists. If anything, Democrats are relieved that Trump didn’t nominate Kris Kobach, the ultra-hawkish secretary of state of Kansas, or David Clarke Jr., the outspoken sheriff of Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, for the position.

But “it seems to me that running this department is not exactly brain surgery.” It was pointed out that Carson seemed to contradict previous statements that he made and was told “I think you understand you’ll be held to the ideas you’ve expressed today, not ones necessarily you may have written about or talked about in a presidential race” by Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown. Carson said that he thinks that a holistic approach is needed to overhaul the agency. “One of the things that I discovered as a neurosurgeon, you’re much more effective when you bring in a bigger-picture view of things. Instead of looking at a tumor someone has in their brain, [consider] ... how can you bring health to this entire individual … and put them in an environment where they can thrive.” He added, “That’s the same here,” mentioning that he would place more clinics in low-income neighborhoods to save residents high out-of-pocket emergency room visits.

Perry also had a short stint as lieutenant governor and was Texas agriculture commissioner for eight years. His experience in energy-rich Texas would, on the surface, seem to make him a natural fit, but the Energy Department is actually more of a national security agency that’s responsible for designing and protecting the nation’s stockpile of nuclear weapons. The last two energy secretaries were award-winning scientists.

Teacher unions will aggressively oppose DeVos over her support for unfettered and largely unregulated expansion of charter schools and vouchers. That likely won’t matter much to Republicans, but it will hurt her chances of winning broad bipartisan support. Conservatives who favor reduced federal power over education will question her previous support for Common Core standards and her affiliation with organizations that have championed Common Core. Anticipating that issue, DeVos has said that while she supports “high standards and strong accountability” for schools, Common Core “got turned into a federalized boondoggle.” DeVos has said that if confirmed, she will be a “strong advocate for great public schools.” But when public schools are “troubled, or unsafe, or not a good fit for a child,” she said, parents should have a “right to enroll their child in a high quality alternative.” “I share President-elect Trump’s view that it’s time to shift the debate from what the system thinks is best for kids to what moms and dads want, expect and deserve,” she said.

In Trump’s Words “My administration is going to make sure we take advantage of our huge natural resource deposits to make America energy independent and create vast new wealth for our nation, and Rick Perry is going to do an amazing job as the leader of that process,” Trump said in December. Perry actually confronted Trump in the early part of the 2016 race and gave an entire speech in July 2015 calling Trump “a cancer on conservatism.” But Perry eventually dropped out of the primaries and then campaigned for Trump once Trump clinched the nomination. ››››››››› Will He Be Confirmed?

Barring a truly embarrassing moment that will haunt him throughout his political years, Perry will probably win strong support from Republicans and even some red-state Democrats. His hearing is scheduled for January 19 before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.

Key Republicans have already come out in support of DeVos, including the chairman of the relevant committee in the Senate, Lamar Alexander. Most Democrats will likely oppose the pick, but barring a controversy that erupts during her confirmation hearings, she should win approval. That could take a while because DeVos and her husband have myriad investments with as many as 250 companies located at the same address.

Despite her lack of foreign policy experience, Democrats have signaled they will not put up much of a fight over her nomination. Haley is considered well within the mainstream of the modern Republican Party, and Democrats are likely to use her confirmation hearings to press her on whether or not she will fight inside the Trump administration for sustained U.S. funding for the U.N. and an internationalist foreign policy. Her hearing is scheduled for January 18 before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. In her opening remarks, she is expected to criticize the U.N. for its treatment of Israel. “Are we getting what we pay for?” she asks in her opening statement. Israel is the only international issue she focuses on at the beginning of her hearing. She said a December U.N. Security Council resolution that calls on Israel to stop settlement construction in Palestinian areas “damaging” and a reflection of the U.N.’s “long-history of anti-Israel bias.” That resolution passed when the U.S. abstained from voting.

Unfortunately, some civil liberties and privacy advocates claim that liability protection in [the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act] with respect to the use of cybersecurity systems could lead to broader activities than authorized. This legislation doesn’t do that.” In his hearing last week, Pompeo asserted, “We have an awful lot of work to do [in terms of cybersecurity]. There is no reason to expect this threat is going to diminish. And that will take a whole of government effort to do that, shared by the executive branch and legislative branch.” In 2014, he addressed Islamic terrorism. “My generation was the tail end of the Cold War,” Pompeo said during a visit to Kansas State, where he discussed the battle against the Islamic State. He added: “Before that, you had Nazism. This will ultimately be this generation’s fight, this battle where radical Islam continues to want to take on the West in fundamental ways, in the same way these other ideologies wanted to do before. I think we’re going to be at this for a while. We ought to be vigorous and thoughtful and effective in the way we respond.”

No nomination is without controversy and Flynn is no exception. Last Friday it was revealed that Flynn had been in touch with Russia’s ambassador to Washington a number of times. Flynn spoke with Sergey Kislyak after the shooting of a Russian ambassador to Turkey. They also exchanged holiday greetings via text messages and phone. The Logan Act forbids any U.S. citizen without official U.S. authority from influencing “disputes or controversies” involving the U.S. and a foreign government. The phone call came on the same day President Obama ordered sanctions on Russia, although Flynn has said they did not speak about the sanctions. It is said that they spoke about setting up a phone call with Trump and Putin after the inauguration. In 2015, Flynn was seated next to Putin at a Russian media gala, and

he previously had a paid speaking gig with Russia Today, the Kremlin’s TV network, though it was before he took on a formal campaign role. In Flynn’s book, The Field of Fight, he writes that Russia would not be a good ally in the war against ISIS. “Therefore, when it is said that Russia would make an ideal partner for fighting radical Islam, it behooves us to remember that the Russians haven’t been very effective at fighting jihadis on their own territory and are in cahoots with the Iranians. In Syria, the two allies have loudly proclaimed they are waging war against ISIS, but in reality the great bulk of their efforts are aimed at the opponents of the [Bashar] Assad regime. They are certainly not ‘fighting terrorists’ in the Middle East; theirs is a battle to rescue an embattled ally in Damascus.” He concluded: “Although I believe America and Russia could find mutual ground fighting radical Islamists, there is no reason to believe Putin would welcome cooperation with us; quite the contrary, in fact.” The book was released in July. Trump has put a working relationship with Russia high on his priority list.

The average age of an ADHD diagnosis is 7. When a childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s parents receive the diagnosis, they are often faced with the quandary of whether or not they should treat their child with ADHD medications. One of their concerns is of drug abuse. This is because the most common type of medication for ADHD is a stimulant, either a Methylphenidate (such as Ritalin or Concerta) or an Amphetamine (such as Adderall or Vyvanse), and these substances are often abused. However, abuse of these medications is only when they are taken in higher dosages or in a different manner than prescribed. When taken in the prescribed dosage (for that individual patient) and in the proper manner they do not produce an effect that would lead to abuse as demonstrated by studies done by the NIH. Nevertheless, someone who does not have an ADHD diagnosis should never take these medications. Usage of stimulants by someone who does not have ADHD can be a risk factor for developing a substance abuse disorder. Even the use of a stimulant for improving academic outcomes (such as studying for a test or learning with greater hasmadah) is a very dangerous behavior and can be the start of a slippery slope into addiction. ADHD medications are no different than any other prescription medication that only the prescribed patient should be taking the medication. This is a service of Relief Resources. he IRS publishes hundreds of reports every year, covering all sorts of topics. You’ll find routine statistical summaries, like the always-popular “Number of Individual Income Tax Returns, Income, Exemptions and Deductions, Tax, and Average Tax.” You’ll find page-turners worthy of a Tom Clancy thriller, like last summer’s “Actions Can Be Taken to Better Address Potential Noncompliance for Roth Individual Retirement Arrangement Conversions.” But the most entertaining report of all is the Criminal Investigations unit’s annual business report summarizing their work for the previous year. On November 29, CI released their annual report for FY 2015. As is typical in government, budget cuts colored the story — the unit hired just 45 investigators over the last three years, and attrition has reduced staffing to its lowest levels since the 1970s. And, as usual, you’ve got to be a really bad guy to find yourself in CI’s crosshairs. For 2015, the unit initiated just 3,835 investigations, down from 4,297 in 2014. But if CI does take you on, they’ve usually got you dead to rights: the unit won 93.2% of the

cases they prosecuted. Dig behind the dry statistics, though, to read about the actual offenders that CI targets, and you’ll find one sorry smorgasbord of human greed, frailty, arrogance, and

downright stupidity. Here are three of the more entertaining stories: • Happy Asker grew his company, Happy’s Pizza, from a single Detroit-area location in 1994 to a 95-store chain. But paying taxes didn’t make him happy. (Sorry, couldn’t resist.) So he conspired with four of his franchisees and employees to skim $6.1 million in cash from the books and divvy it up in weekly “profit splits.” The group also underreported wages to evade $2.39 million in payroll taxes, because why not? Now Happy will spend the

company called Green Power, Inc., and told investors he had found a way to convert municipal waste into biofuel. But what he’d really found was a way to convert demand for cutting-edge green energy into a classic Ponzi scheme. Spitzauer used his investors’ money on a million-dollar mansion, private schools for his children, Seattle Seahawks tickets, and paying back previous victims. Oh, and somehow he “forgot” to pay taxes on the $10 million he stole. Now he gets to spend four years in a northern California prison and pay the IRS $2,585,177 in restitution. Crime really doesn’t pay — especially when it comes to taxes! Fortunately, there’s no reason to learn that lesson the hard way! What You Will Need: 3 egg whites 3/4 cup extra fine sugar (The proportions are 1 egg white to Âź cup sugar)

Preperation: 1. Preheat oven to 225 degrees. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. 2. If you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have extra fine sugar, you may take regular sugar and beat in food processor for a minute. 3. Beat egg whites until frothy. Slowly add sugar, one teaspoon at a time, until whites are stiff and glossy. Drop mixture by rounded teaspoons or squeeze through a pastry bag fitted with a decorative tip -onto prepared baking sheet. Bake for 1 hour, and shut off oven (or just use time bake setting), and leave in oven for at least 3 hours or overnight. Store in airtight container. (This is critical!) Enjoy!

Rainy Day Pasta Here are two recipes that are just what you want on a rainy or snowy day when you certainly don't want to go out of the house. Delicious when prepared as written and easily adaptable to the ingredients you have on hand.
