Dear Readers, A UN resolution didn’t give the Jewish people the land of Israel, and it won’t take it away. Sure, all fair-minded people need to push back against this last ditch effort of Mr. Obama and Kerry to stack the chips against Israel in future negotiations, if there indeed are any. This is not a partisan issue. Israel is a beautiful example of what a democratic country can look like even in the otherwise jungle called the Middle East. For the US Ambassador to the UN to allow Israel to be singled out and not offering a counter resolution condemning calls for violence by Palestinian leadership is absurd. What’s more, per the behind-the-scenes transcript leaked by Egypt (!), Secretary Kerry and Former Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice told Mr. Abbas that he had lived up to all expectations the administration had. Really?! We Jews have a knack for turning lemons into lemonade. I don’t think the masterminds behind this foresaw the backlash it would bring from leaders right and left. Professor Alan Der-

showitz called it a stab in the back, Democrat Party Whip Steny Hoyer called the Obama administration out on this, a Bloomberg News editorial called for bi-partisan agreement in moving the embassy to Jerusalem. This step backward will yet strengthen Israel’s position, including establishing Yerushalayim as the eternal capital of the Jewish people. It’s interesting that the part dealing with Yerushalayim is what seems to have evoked the strongest response. Many of the prophesies and midrashim describing the final challenge facing the Jewish people refer to a battle for Jerusalem, the nations of the world ganging up on the Jewish people one last time. A final rabim b’yad m’atim. It’s already happening. Let us be ready for the miracles which are to follow. Like we say in the minchah Amida on Tisha B’av “For you, O Lord, consumed her with fire, and with fire You will rebuild her.” Wishing you a wonderful Shabbos,

Open House for Mesivta Kesser Torah

esser Torah, a new Mesivta scheduled to open in Baltimore for the 5778 school year, recently held an Open House at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gamliel Hackerman. Close to one hundred people filled the room as Rabbis Tzvi Mordechai and Avrohom Feldheim spoke passionately about the Yeshiva they envision. There was a palpable excitement in the air as parents of seventh and eighth graders from around Baltimore came together to hear their words. Mesivta Kesser Torah will be run by the dynamic father and son team of Rabbi Tzvi Mordechai Feldheim and Rabbi Avrohom Feldheim. Rabbi Tzvi Mordechai Feldheim is a veteran mechanech, who served as Menahel and ninth grade Rebbi at Yeshiva Toras Chaim of Denver for the past two decades, and has inspired hundreds of talmidim to embrace Yiddishkeit and become passionate Bnei Torah. Rabbi Avrohom Feldheim has served as Rebbi and Mashgiach for the past five years at Mechina of South Florida, under the auspices of Harav Yochanan Zweig. He is known for his innovative educational approaches. Mesivta Kesser Torah will draw upon this unique combination of experience and innovation to bring out the best in their talmidim. “In recent years, the Baltimore community has experienced unprecedented growth,” remarked Mr. Aryeh Leib Freedman. “In this year’s eighth grade classes throughout the city, there will be about 150 graduates, bli ayin hara.” Rabbi Feldheim adds, “More boys than ever before want to attend a local yeshivah, rather than go out of town, and there simply is not enough room in the existing yeshivos.” The Mesivta is being designed for

a bochur who has a strong commitment to Yiddishkeit and yearns to become a true ben Torah. It will provide a warm yet challenging environment that will encourage and motivate each boy to reach his potential. As Rabbi Tzvi Mordechai Feldheim emphasized, “Mesivta Kesser Torah will have the full tzurah of a yeshivah with a high level of learning, and a wholesome environment in which bochurim will become passionate bnei Torah, with a love for Yiddishkeit, mitzvos, and tefillah.”

The attendees walked away with a beautiful, detailed packet which included a curriculum for both limudei kodesh and limudei chol. The curriculum emphasizes the goal of the Yeshiva; to prepare each Bochur to attend any Bais Medrash of his choice. The packet also contained an application, sample hachana worksheets, and a CD recording of Rabbi Tzvi Mordechai Feldheim’s shiurim from Torah Communications Network. The Mesivta will have a full accredited secular studies department,

under the leadership of Rabbi Moshe Dovid Robinson. Rabbi Robinson holds a Masters degree in Education and is a popular 5th grade Rebbe. He is a dynamic and energetic mechanech who will bring his talent to Mesivta Kesser Torah. Our secular studies program will provide bachurim with the skills needed to succeed in today’s world. ident. Reed Cordish, a partner at his family’s real estate and entertainment firm, The Cordish Companies, co-hosted a fundraiser for Trump’s presidential campaign in October, according to Jewish Insider, which first reported on Cordish joining the Trump adminis-

tration. Cordish is in his early 40s. Kushner’s wife and the president-elect’s daughter Ivanka Trump introduced Cordish and his now-wife, Margaret Katz. Cordish’s father, David, the chairman and CEO of The Cordish Companies, and the president-elect are

friends. The two met during the mediation process of a lawsuit in which Trump sued The Cordish Companies. David Cordish also is a board member of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, a prominent lobbying group on behalf of Israel.

Mesivta Ne’imus HaTorah Bochurim Learn Shechita Basics at STAR-K Kosher Certification By Margie Pensak

hen Mesivta Ne’imus HaTorah Menahel Rabbi Laib Schulman approached STAR-K Kosher Certification about teaching a few of his students some Kashrus basics, the non-profit agency was eager to comply. Rather than start off with something as simple as what is behind a kosher symbol or basic kitchen kashrus rules, STAR-K Kashrus Administrator Rabbi Mayer Kurcfeld went with his gut feeling—literally and figuratively—planning a memorable once-in-alifetime presentation. He wowed the boys at STAR-K’s Baltimore offices, on January 4, with his three different-sized chalafim (shechting knives), two cow lungs, and a cow’s hoof! In addition to demonstrating the chalaf sharpness test on a student’s nail and explaining which knife is used for which type of animal, Rabbi Kurcfeld discussed the five basic halachos of shechita, mentioning the types of animals that need to be schechted. He also reviewed the split hoof and fish scale kosher criteria, the difference between a neveila and a treifa, and how to check the lungs to see if it is glatt kosher or treif. As Rabbi Kurcfeld noted, “Nowhere in the Torah are the rules of

shechita mentioned. It simply says: ‘Shecht the animal the way I commanded you’. This is one of the sources of Torah shel baal peh; you just have to believe in the Talmud with its details. “Shechita is one of the most vital parts of Kashrus and it has a lot of mesorah to it; you cannot learn it in a book,” continues Rabbi Kurcfeld. “I wanted the boys to know that everything they were seeing had been passed down from my Rebbi and he learned it from his Rebbi, all the way back to Moshe Rabbeinu. Hopefully, the concept of accepting and trusting your Rebbi in everything he teaches will have a ripple effect in all their other learning.” Neimus Hatorah’s mission is to help their talmidim successfully move forward as productive and functioning members of society. After attending a morning shiur, the post-high school students can avail themselves of a Maryland- funded career counseling and jobs training program, along with an array of presentations and workshops on a variety of practical topics. In addition to picking up important knowledge and life skills, the program is designed to broaden their horizons and to present them with possible career opportunities, such as in Kashrus. The field trip to STAR-K was part of a series of presentations scheduled

for the mesivta. Future topics, which will be covered by other STAR-K Kashrus Administrators, include: hashgacha in restaurants, the challenges of hashgacha, and how to read

kosher labels. “Although it was a very small group of boys, their Rosh Yeshiva felt they would benefit so we were pleased to arrange the classes,” remarks STAR-K Kashrus Administrator Rabbi Zvi Goldberg, coordinator of many of the agency’s educational programs. “Rabbi Kurcfeld really went all out for them. It is part of our achrayis to Klal Yisroel and our ongoing commitment to teach about Kashrus as much as possible.” “We are very excited about these presentations, which we feel will be extremely beneficial to the participants,” says Rabbi Ari Soloff, Executive Director of Mesivta Ne’imus HaTorah. “As an internationally recognized leader in the industry, STAR-K is a great resource for any type of education in the field of Kashrus,” adds Rabbi Schulman. In participant Meir Goldfeder’s own words, “I really enjoyed our session with Rabbi Kurcfeld. “A handson lesson about the simanim of kosher animals and the shechita process really expanded my understanding of this important topic. Nachlas Hatorah Legal Holiday Learning On Monday morning, December 26th, ‫כ”ו כסלו‬, Kollel Nachlas Hatorah of Khal Machzikei Torah held a Legal Holiday morning of learning. The Rosh Kollel, Harav Nechemiah Goldstein shlit”a gave a shiur on the topic of why there is no ‫ ספיקא דיומא‬by Chanuka. After he concluded the shiur the large crowd was addressed by Harav Herschel Rosenfeld shlit”a,, Rosh Kollel of Khal Chasidim, on the topic of if you only have enough money to purchase Ner Chanuka or Ner Shabbos which one has precedence. The Gemara says that Ner Shabbos comes first because of Shalom Bayis. He then

emphasized the importance of Shalom Bayis and that it even precedes the precious mitzvah of ner chanuka and persumey nisa. All those in attendance gained much insight and inspiration

Who Needs A Postcard When You Have A Sweater

am Barksy, a local Baltimorean, is making national headlines with his custom sweaters. Sam creates sweaters that depict places he visits and then has his picture taken in front of them while wearing his creation. Sam has been knitting for 17 years, and he started when he was at a crossroads in life. “I have a learning disability and also a neurological disorder that makes me tired and weak at times,” he told The Yarn Loop. “In 1999 it forced me to leave nursing school—at first I didn’t know what I was going to do.” He learned the craft from the owners of a local yarn shop. “They

agreed to teach me how to knit on the condition I buy their yarn. To make a long story short, I’ve fulfilled my yarn buying debt to them and a lot more!” After first knitting two solid-colored sweaters, Sam wanted more creativity in his garments. Unable to find something that suited him, he realized that he could “just try to knit a sweater without a pattern.” It was a success and launched Sam on his long journey of illustrating natural wonders, bustling metropolises, and even creepy crawlers. Each sweater is completely unique—all told, he’s made almost 90 of them, with no plans to stop. Where to next Sam?

Lieutenant Yael Yekutiel, 20, Cadet Shir Hajaj, 22, Cadet Shira Tzur, 20 and Cadet Erez Orbach, 20, were the four IDF soldiers tragically slain by an Arab terrorist this week. Fadi al-Qanbar, a resident of the capital’s Jabel Mukaber neighborhood, viciously rammed a flatbed truck into a group of soldiers on Sunday afternoon. The soldiers were participating in a group tour in the Armon Hanatziv neighborhood in Jerusalem and as they unloaded off the tour bus the truck came charging at full speed killing four and injuring another 16 people, two very seriously. According to police, the terrorist accelerated as he approached the group. He then reversed the vehicle and struck the group a second time. Within seconds the driver was fatally shot by a civilian guide and soldiers. The truck, with Israeli license plates, was purchased by the terrorist last year. It approached from the direction of that the Arab neighborhood Jabel Mukaber, which is adjacent to the promenade. Al-Qanbar was in his late 20s, was married with four children, and had previously served time in an Israeli jail. “In a fraction of a second during which I was speaking with one of the officers, I saw the truck plowing into us. After a few rolls on the grass I saw the truck start to reverse and then I already understood that this was not an accident. I felt that my pistol was still on me, so I ran up to him and started emptying my clip. He went in reverse and again drove over the injured,” the

group’s guide, Eitan Rund, said. Since the incident, Rund has expressed his concern that the soldiers did not react fast enough. “I have to ask why it took a 30-year-old civilian to fire first,” he said, “when there were well-armed officers” present. He blames the conviction for manslaughter handed out last week to soldier Elor Azaria, who shot dead a disarmed, injured Palestinian assailant. The IDF, though, claims that two to three soldiers opened fire from close range, perhaps after Rund, and are thought to be the ones who killed the terrorist. Within an hour after the attack, a Jerusalem court imposed a gag order on the investigation, so the exact details have not yet been revealed. Leah Schreiber, one of the guides for the group of soldiers, shared her harrowing experience, “I was explaining about the view of Jerusalem. I saw soldiers shouting and screaming. Some of the soldiers started shooting. It took some time to kill [the driver] so he was able to reverse. The whole thing took maybe a minute and a half,” she said. The tour was a field trip as part of the army’s “Culture Sundays,” in which troops visit historical and national sites at the start of the week. According to the Ben Zvi Institute, which organized the tour for the IDF, the soldiers were cadets from the officer’s training course and were from non-combat units. Following the attack, Hamas terror group praised the attack as “heroic.” Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem wrote on his Facebook page: “These operations demonstrate that all attempts to bypass the resistance or to thwart it will fail every time.” Israel Hayom reported on Monday that a relative of al-Qanbar said that al-Qanbar became incensed after hearing a sermon at his mosque on Friday excoriating U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv. According to Israel Radio, the expected embassy relocation was the chief subject of religious sermons throughout the West Bank on Friday, with PA leadership instructing the mosques under its control to focus on the matter. Israel Pulls UN Funding

In response to the passing of UN Security Council Resolution 2334, which condemns Israel’s presence in Judea, Samaria and eastern Jerusalem, Israel will be suspending significant amounts of its annual UN contributions in 2017. The Israeli Mission informed the UN that it will be cutting approximately 6 million dollars in protest. The 6 million represents the amount of money the UN allocated to anti-Israel bodies. These groups include the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People (CEIRPP), the Division for Palestinian Rights (DPR), the Work of the Special Committee to Investigate Israeli Practices Affecting the Human Rights of the Palestinian People and Other Arabs of the Occupied Territories (SCIIHRP), and the Special Information Program on the Question of Palestine of the UN Department of Public Information. Danny Danon, Israel’s Ambassador to the UN, said that “it is unreasonable for Israel to fund bodies that operate against us at the UN. The UN must end the absurd reality in which it supports bodies whose sole intent is to spread incitement and anti-Israel propaganda.” Danon added, “Now is the time to implement real change at the UN. We seek to stop the practice where the UN is used solely as a forum for unending attacks against Israel.” The Israeli Mission also plans to implement more initiatives to change the structure of the UN, hoping to end anti-Israel activities within the international body. A Ticket of the Past Hey Dude, Where’s My Car?

Ever lose your car on Central Avenue on Friday afternoon? You know you parked it right in front of this store and then when you come back, it’s not there. No, the meter maids didn’t tow it away; the car simply was parked a few cars back. Phew. A man in the UK experienced this sort of panic – just a billion times over. Back in June, he borrowed a friend’s BMW in Scotland and then drove it to Manchester for a concert. He parked his car in one of the parking garages – and then forgot which one. Turns out, looking for a car in myriad parking garages is like, well, looking for a needle in a haystack. Impossible to find. After searching for five days, he gave up. His friend, the owner of the vehicle, emailed parking garages and officials in search of the car as well but to no avail. Finally, the owner reported the vehicle lost or stolen. Well, we know it was lost. Now, seven months later, it seems that the BMW has finally been found! Police officers say that they happened upon an abandoned car in one of the area lots just before midnight on Friday and, after seeing it had been reported lost or stolen, tweeted that they’d found the car that had been lost

We know that people return library books late – even years late. But this week, Renae Thornton reached out to police to pay a ticket that was a bit late – 57 years old. The ticket was issued to Thornton’s “Paw Paw,” Delbert Kyle, for driving with one headlight and without a driver’s license. The fine? $10. Through Facebook Thornton connected with Police Chief Darryl Barton of West, Texas, telling him she wasn’t sure if the ticket had been paid. Barton replied to Thornton: “Well now, let me see… late fees, court cost, failure to appear charges…this could get expensive. Sure, come on over. Let’s talk about this…JUST KIDDING.” He added, “No worries, but I would be very interested in seeing this piece of history.” Thornton retrieved the ticket, snapped a photo and sent it to Barton. The ticket was dated April 27, 1960. According to the back of the ticket, the ticket was paid and was signed by Mayor George Kacir.

Out of the Picture In an effort to save face, an upstate New York man bought up nearly 1,000 copies of a local newspaper when it printed his mugshot and information about his recent driving while intoxicated arrest. But his efforts were for naught as the story of his frantic purchase went viral. Joseph Talbot (see, even you in the Five Towns are reading about his arrest) was arrested by State Police last Thursday. He was charged with driving while intoxicated and obstruction of governmental administration in the second-degree. During his arrest, Talbot called the officers names and refused to be fingerprinted or photographed because he didn’t want it to be in the local newspaper. He told the trooper the arrest would ruin his family.

But never tell a newspaperman that you’re scared of publicity. When Ron Holdraker, editor and owner of the Wayne County Times, heard about the story, he obtained Talbot’s mugshot and printed it on Saturday morning. The story was featured in the 12,000-circulation newspaper and on its website. That’s when Talbot took action. The self-conscious man followed the paper’s deliveryman and bought nearly 1,000 copies of the paper at $1.25 each. His frantic antics were picked up by other news outlets. You see, Talbot forgot that most people nowadays don’t read newspapers (except TJH). There’s something way more far-reaching called the internet.

Enter a sweet young man about to be an uncle. When heading to the hospital to see his niece for the first time, he donned a suit. According to his sister, “My sister is about to have a baby and my brother showed up to the hospital in a suit because ‘first impressions matter,’” she tweeted. The blazer and slacks were worn with a tie, tie clip, pocket square and watch. His hair was freshly combed. When a photo of the gentlemen hit the internet, it went viral. After all, don’t we all wish our dates came that nattily dressed?

Joseph Schwab, 36, was driving home from work in August of 2015

when he was pulled over by a cop. The officer said that Schwab was driving erratically and said that she believed he was under the influence of drugs. She observed that he was “amped up” and had dilated pupils. She also noticed workout supplements in the car. When a blood test was taken to determine what was in Schwab’s system, the only evidence found was caffeine. Could be he downed too many cups of coffee that day. But is coffee a drug? Schwab was then charged with a misdemeanor DUI charge for driving under the influence. Interestingly, despite the blood test results that indicate only the presence of caffeine, the prosecutors were initially moving forward with the charge against Schwab. “This is a case without a blood result, right, so it makes it a very difficult challenge to prove in court to not have the blood result,” Solano County District Attorney Krishna Abrams admitted. Schwab says that more than a year later, this whole ordeal has hurt him financially and damaged his reputation. “Looks like I’m undependable,” Schwab said. “And when you tell this type of story to somebody, they are naturally not going to believe you.” Ultimately, the DUI charge against Schwab was dropped. He is still facing a charge of reckless driving. Joseph, keep off the Red Bull for a while.

Earlier the Prophet alludes to how after the Philistines captured the Holy Ark, Shaul courageously runs alone a great distance and “snatches” the Two Tablets from the hands of Goliath. )‫(שם ד יב רש"י שם‬ In the days of Achashveirosh, Esther “captures” the heart of the king leading to the sequence of events that lead to the downfall of Haman. Each of these illustrious members of the tribe of Binyamin displays the talent of the ‫זאב יטרוף‬, the predatory wolf, who can adeptly ‫חוטף‬, snatch, his prey. Clearly this hereditary trait must have stemmed from their famed ancestor Binyamin. Yet in the portrayal of his life as detailed in the Torah nowhere is this skill evident. Rabbeinu Ephrayim, one of the Tosafists, makes a startlingly fascinating claim regarding the nature of Binyamin. In his commentary on Torah he states: Benjamin was a predatory wolf, sometimes preying upon people. When it was time for him to change into a wolf, as it says, ‘Benjamin is a predatory wolf’, as long as he was with his father, he could rely upon a physician, and in that merit he did not change into a wolf. He goes on to explain that this was why Yaakov Avinu feared for Binyamin to leave, when Yaakov exclaimed, ‘And he shall leave his father and die’, namely, that when he sepa-

rates from his father, and turns into a wolf with travelers, whoever finds him will kill him. In another place he elaborates with the following:

The loneliness of pain allows one to focus one’s energies in a way that comfort cannot. One must believe however that one possesses that ability to attain that goal.

There is a type of wolf that is called loup-garou (werewolf), which is a person that changes into a wolf. When it changes into a wolf, his feet emerge from between his shoulders, as it says, ‘he dwells between the shoulders’ )‫(דברים לג יב‬. And likewise, Binyamin ate his mother, who died on his accord, as it is written, ‘And it was as her soul left her, for she was dying, and she called his name the son of my affliction’ )‫(בראשית לה יח‬.

The word ‫ אוני‬refers to pain as well as to strength. Rav Hirsch teaches that ‫ און‬actually means to ‘claim possession’. When we suffer the pain of death it is the feeling of having a right to the possession of somebody of whom you have been robbed of. When one regains a healthy perspective on the situation at hand that is grounded in emunah, one becomes empowered with a greater strength, a greater resolve.

Perhaps we may suggest that the couching of his nature in this physical malady is actually a metaphor for the inner struggle Binyamin faced from birth.

The wolf is an animal that lacks the requisite strength to overpower by brute force alone in gaining its prey. He must utilize the element of surprise to “snatch” its quarry. At times it is the very lack of strength and its diminished size that deceives its target into thinking it is incapable of attack.

Binyamin entered this world without the warmth of a mother. He later lost a dear and devoted brother he cherished greatly. During those lonely years Binyamin goes on to establish his own family, he names each one of his ten children in memory of his departed brother, each name emphasizing the difficult circumstances Yosef must have faced. )‫(רש"י בראשית מג ל‬ Perhaps Binyamin struggled with the trauma of pain he was born into and continued to experience throughout his life. The natural reaction when reliving trauma is to react violently and impulsively. Rachel his mother names him ‫בן‬ ‫אוני‬, son of affliction. Why would she give him a name that would accentuate the pain each time his name would be called? Maybe she sought to make others aware of his fragile nature in the hope that kindness and understanding would be exhibited toward him. His father Yaakov however calls him ‫ימין‬-‫בן‬, son of strength )‫(רמב"ן‬. Yaakov Avinu wasn’t negating Rachel’s intent but rather infusing within this traumatized child the belief that one can transform pain into strength. One’s plight should not defeat but rather compel one to find the inner-strength to go forward.

The lone wolf is confident that in its limitation lay its greatest strength. The instinctive resolve the wolf possesses compels it to achieve its goal. Rabbeinu Ephrayim describes the ‘werewolf’ and its “feet emerging from the shoulders”. The shoulders represent ‘burden’, suffering. The feet imply mobility, going forward and taking that ‘load’ and giving it ‘legs’. Each of these descendants of Binyamin stood isolated and alone against powerful enemies. These lone wolves however had that inner confidence that in their most difficult circumstance they would discover their greatest strength. Each one of us can easily transform into reactive werewolves if we permit self-pity to defeat us. If we maintain the legacy of Binyamin however, we can shackle the forces of defeatism, transforming challenge into victory. May we finally reach that day when the force of the ‘wolf’ within us will coexist healthily with the ‘lamb’ and bring in its wake the final redemption.

By Rabbi Motty Rabinowitz Over the past two weeks, we have continued to witness the destruction that can be perpetrated by individuals who have uncontrollable rage and who’s values (or lack of) drive them to fanatical acts of terrorism. We of course wish a speedy recovery to all the wounded and traumatized. But it would perhaps also be valuable to contrast these evil acts with how we must handle our own passion. In our Torah reading, Yaakov gathers his family for his final words, and imparts each of his sons individually with blessings and guidance for the

future. Shimon and Levi are however, lumped together, and then seemingly read the riot act. Yaakov chastises them for episodes where their exuberant passion and ensuing zealously were let loose, with dire consequences. In the story of their sister Dina in Shechem, they destroyed the whole city. They were also the instigators of the attack on Yosef as he approached the brothers: “And one man said to his brother” (37:10) – the Midrash says that this refers to Shimon and Levi. It would seem that their weakness-

es were identical and that their future paths would be the same. However, deeper reading shows this not to be accurate. When Yosef decided to incarcerate one of the tribes in Egypt as collateral while the other brothers returned with Binyomin, he picks Shimon. Rashi notes (42,24) that it was Shimon who was the initiator of the conversation to kill Yosef and he was the one who physically pushed him into the pit. Shimon was the ringleader; Levi was merely the accomplice. Historically, we also see that their future paths starkly diverged. Levi became the tribe that served in the temple, and were allocated 48 specially designated cities. Shimon on the other hand, was donated random cities within the population of Yehuda, many of which he eventually lost at the time of David (Rashi D”H 1, 4:31). It seems clear that while they shared the passion and zealousness, they were undoubtedly different. Rabbi Yaakov Kamenetsky, in his commentary Emes L’Yaakov, explains that Shimon and Levi differed in how they controlled their passion. Levi was able to keep his passions in check through the Torah and Mitzvos. While he could still cause carnage, he was naturally inclined to temper his zealousness by the rule of law. On the other hand, Shimon was the source of unbridled passion, emotion without boundaries. He was not able temper his anger and exuberance. Levi could therefore be allowed to have a special role in the Jewish People as the religious leadership. Passion and devotion are critical components to lead a nation. But it must be controlled and moderated. Shimon, while also having a future role, had to be kept more in check. Yaakov’s blessing to these tribes is also intriguing: “I will divide them up in Yaakov, and scatter them in Israel” (49:7). While both Shimon and Levi would have future roles in the Jewish People,

dividing and scattering hardly strikes us as a loving blessing from a dying father. Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch remarks that on the contrary, this is indeed a blessing. It is true that in times of peace and success it is critical to widely scatter these tribes, as their passion and strength of character can breed extremism and lawlessness. The only way to guarantee that zealousness does not boil over is by ensuring that they are not allowed to reach a critical mass together. However, when the nation is in exile or downtrodden, it is precisely this strength and Jewish pride that will power the nation’s pulse throughout all the persecutions, suffering and despondency. ‘Scattering them in Israel’ will allow the rest of the nation the chance to latch on to this passion, to reignite its pride, to reenergize its broken spirit. Shimon and Levi have a tremendous gift, a powerful blessing, as long as it is used and channeled correctly. One way their energy becomes positive, says the Sefas Emes, is when it is focused on helping the Jewish People instead of being fixated on themselves. This is why they need to be spread throughout the nation. It is there, among the masses, assisting others, that they channel their energy to a higher purpose. But when their passions are focused internally, they become a danger to themselves and the nation. We are indeed challenged by rampant extremism worldwide, and need to unfortunately also combat it internally. However, the positive passion for life represented by these brothers is critical for our nation’s future. Our children notice when we are apathetic about our Jewish values, but they also absorb when we display enthusiasm for our Yiddishkeit. It is that powerful energy, the zest for a meaningful life, the drive to build a just nation, that will pull us out of exile and open the door for redemption.

t seems that the more new things come along the more amazing they become. Smart is the phrase that comes to mind and, of course, “smart” is the adjective that defines all new technology that wants to be taken remotely seriously. Take the newest cars for example. There are no door handles (ha, ha! door handles; how quaint). There are no keys, of course (puh’lease…how passé). Cameras use facial recognition to identify the driver and passengers, then adjust the seats to everyone’s preferences. There are no mirrors. High-definition displays replace the rearview and side-view mirrors through HD cameras. Of course, the cars park themselves. They use up to 30 sensors around the car to enable it to hunt around a parking lot for a space and then park perfectly. I am not sure I’ll be able to afford that sort of car any time soon, but I can always console myself with my smartphone. Leaving aside about a gazillion

apps, including Jewish ones that can make my phone do everything apart from making challah (at least I think it can’t do that), the list of things it can do is astonishing. You can monitor your blood sugar and pressure; retina scanners are here too, as well as fitness monitors. Then there is the standard fingerprint recognition feature to unlock your phone and let you can use it and more importantly stop other people from using it. With all these features and, of course, the fact that your phone probably contains all of your most critical personal details, like passwords, it becomes more than a phone. It becomes a crucial part of you. During this Chanukah, disaster struck. I lost my smartphone. Given how much essential “me” is contained inside it, I started to panic. My wife calmed me by pointing out that smartphones have features that allow them to be traced and located by their signal. Phew! Panic over. My wife and I started the pro-

cedure that launches the search on her iPhone and off we set to retrieve our lost child. At this point I should point out that although the adjective “smart” may well apply to the phone, it might not always apply to its owner. If only we had pressed one more part of the screen, we would have been all set. Instead I had a “glitch” in my own programming so that the map took us on a treasure hunt all over the Five Towns. Every time we arrived at an address, which surely must be where some saintly soul who had picked up the lost item resided, the phone informed us it was now at a different house! After six or seven tries we came to a house where everyone seemed to be out. For once the signal did not dance away to another location. We were convinced that behind this front door sat a smartphone pining to be reunited with its owner. My wife had the great idea of asking a neighbor if they could call the owners of the house to see if they had found a lost phone. Across the street, a brightly lit home showed

that lots of people were inside. We crossed the street and rang the bell. No one answered so we waited and rang again. No one answered. So we knocked. No one answered. Then a child’s figure appeared behind the glass and disappeared. We rang once more. Then an adult’s outline appeared behind the glass and disappeared and no one answered. I could see a video camera staring down at us and understood what had happened. We had been taken for meshulachim. Crossing the street we knocked on another door and their help was spontaneous and enthusiastic. Soon we were reunited with our phone. As we drove home I recalled a story I heard many years ago. For many years, Reb Moshe Reichmann, z”l, was a major supporter of countless Torah institutions — yeshivos, schools, kollelim. This included my own community kollel in England. One of the avreichim used to travel to Toronto annually to request funds from Mr. Reichmann,

Mr. Reichmann’s hand. “My receptionist misheard your name, and she didn’t realize who it was!” Mr. Cohen was clearly alarmed, as the deal they were scheduled to discuss involved hundreds of millions of dollars. “You see, we have never met before, and when I looked up and saw you, I thought you were a meshulach!” Mr. Reichmann apologized and said, “I am very sorry, but if that’s the way you treat meshulachim... the deal’s off.” And he left the plush offices and returned to Toronto. This was a story my wife had heard me recount many times before. That morning, though, I had been learning something new with my chavrusah something that was very relevant to that closed door. Reb Elya Lopian zt”l writes in Lev Eliyahu (Bereshis page 119): If Hashem sees that the middas ha’din is readying himself to punish someone because something they have done, he sends a poor person to his door. This is so as to evoke the person’s feelings of pity and mercy towards someone who is in trouble. That in turn, middah, kneged middah, arouses Hashem’s feelings of pity and mercy towards the person whom the middos ha’din wanted to strike and stops him doing so! A day later I toyed with the idea of returning to the house with the closed door to explain why I had come that night and to tell them about this frightening teaching. Instead I paused to wonder if the

smart app will show you where you can find another Jew who needs a bit of help with tzedaka to help a sick spouse or money for a sick child. The app will have a graphic of a figure standing outside a door. The sound to alert you to your danger and how to avoid it will be noise that resembles, “Knock, Knock.” Of course, if you are smart, you’ll want to download this to your smartphone right way. If you are really smart you’ll never go anywhere without it so you can listen out for the “Knock Knock” alert and the opportunity to show a little kindness which might just force the middos ha’din to visit another address in another neighborhood altogether.

and these were always supplied. On one occasion he brought back the following story from his trip. Mr. Reichmann had flown to Manhattan for a meeting with some other property developer. He arrived at the skyscraper offices of the New York firm and exited the elevator into the corporation’s office suite. The receptionist sat behind a pentangle-shaped desk surrounded by glass walls that gave onlookers a view into the offices of the firm. Through the glass walls, Mr. Reichmann could observe the staff busy at their desks, and he could even see the owner of the firm, whom he had come to meet, sitting in his own plush office. The receptionist asked if she could help the bearded man who wore the traditional dark suit of Orthodox Jews. Reb Moshe supplied his name and said that he had come to see Mr. “Cohen.” The receptionist invited him to take a seat and promptly picked up the phone and dialed her boss to inform him that Moshe Reichmann was asking to see him. But when she said Mr. Reichmann’s name she repeated what she had heard him say, only she had misheard him. “There is a Mr. Reinman here for you, Mr. Cohen.” The boss looked up from his desk and through the glass saw what he believed was yet another meshulach come to elicit a donation. After ten minutes of waiting, Moshe Reichmann approached the receptionist again and asked if she wouldn’t mind reminding her boss that he was still waiting. The young lady obliged and once again explained that Mr. Reinman was still waiting. This did not even provoke her boss to look up; he hung up the phone and went back to his work. After half an hour, Mr. Reichmann went back to the receptionist and said that he could see that Mr. Cohen was clearly very busy but he could not wait any longer. “Could you just tell them that Mr. Reichmann had to leave?” This time the receptionist heard the name correctly and her face turned white. She knew exactly

Governor Huckabee Visits Israel Orthodox Jewish Chamber of Commerce Mission to Israel Reverberates Through the Halls of Power By Shimmy Blum At the turn of the secular new year, the Orthodox Jewish Chamber of Commerce launched its first ever “U.S.-Israel Business Alliance” mission to Israel, aimed at strengthening the U.S.-Israel economic and diplomatic relationships, and fighting the BDS movement, UN anti-Semitism and other threats to Israel and the Jewish business world. The mission was led by the Jewish Chamber’s Executive Public Policy Committee - Dr. Joseph Frager, Dr. Paul Brody, Odeleya Jacobs and Duvi Honig - and its special guest, former Arkansas governor and two-time presidential candidate Mike Huckabee. Governor Huckabee is a leading supporter of Israel and strong pro-Israel voice in the media. He first visited Israel in 1973, at age 17, and has returned approximately one hundred

The stage was emblazoned with a red banner with the words “Build Israel Great Again,” a play on the famous “Make America Great Again” slogan of incoming U.S. President Donald Trump. Red and white “Build Israel Great Again” caps were distributed to Governor Huckabee and mission participants, who were all too eager to wear them. The group was there to, no less, lay the marker for a new Maale Adumim neighborhood to be built, which would meet the pent-up demand due to natural growth and the need for affordable housing in the Yerushalayim region. Governor Huckabee, a close friend and ally of President Elect Trump, said that he expects the Trump administration policy towards Israel and residence in Judea and Samaria to be “dramatically different” than the Obama administration’s hostile posture. Mayor Casriel, Governor Huckabee and the Jewish Chamber delegation then planted an olive tree in the new neighborhood and placed a vessel with the founding document of the new neighborhood in the ground. Visiting the Iriyah On Wednesday morning, following a press conference with Israeli and international media at the King David Hotel, Governor Huckabee and other mission participants took part in a roundtable forum at Yerushalayim Municipal Hall with Mayor Nir Barkat. Reb Duvi Honig also made an impassioned plea to the mayor not to change the Orthodox status quo at the Kosel Hamaaravi, warning that a commitment to democracy should never supersede fealty to our common religious obligations. He pointed to the recent anti-Israel UN resolution as a harbinger of what can happen when Jews dismiss their religious tradition. “If we don’t respect our traditions, how can we expect the world to respect our historical roots in Eretz Yisroel?,” Reb Duvi asked. ince the dawn of warfare there has always been the need for ships. Built out of necessity ships are vital parts of a military’s ability to actually fight. The two main purposes of ships before the 20th century were as warships (to take part in the battle) and to transport troops. Newer designs allowed navies to do much more including reconnaissance, tankers, minelayers and minesweepers, aircraft carriers, special missions and many other duties that would have been deemed impossible by ships before the Civil War. Here are some of the more interesting ships that have been a part of the American military. An auxiliary ship is defined as any naval vessel that performs a duty to

help out other vessels of the military. Notice that the word navy is missing from this definition as the army and coast guard also have naval vessels. One ship that stands out for not much other than being the subject of the TV series The Wackiest Ship in the Army is the USS Echo. The all-wooden schooner was built in New Zealand in 1905 without any motors. Fifteen years later they were placed on the ship and in 1942 she was lent to the U.S. as part of the reverse Lend-Lease deal. Since wood doesn’t show up on radar she was easily able to avoid detection by the Japanese for three years. Used as a reconnaissance and delivering ship she was able to blend in with native ships while logging 40,000 nautical miles as a member

of the U.S. Army. Eventually the Echo was returned to New Zealand and became a popular tourist attraction as a bar and museum. Almost every ship that is currently commissioned by the U.S. is propelled by some type of motor or engine. The two exceptions are the USS Constitution and the USCGC Eagle. The Constitution is a fascinating ship because it was launched in 1798. Yes, that date is correct, and the wooden hulled frigate, nicknamed Old Ironsides, is a fully commissioned U.S. Navy ship. While all of her current crew are active members of the Navy they dress in War of 1812-era battle clothes as it’s used as a parade ship. The Horst Wessel was built for Nazi Germany in 1936. After WWII

ended the U.S. took control over the ship and renamed it the USCGC (United States Coast Guard Cutter) Eagle. It has been tradition to train Coast Guard cadets on a sailing ship and the Eagle has provided that opportunity since 1946. Trainees are taught various tasks and the 57-man permanent crew are their teachers during the two- to six-week training sessions. The USS Kearsarge was a fearful battleship in the years prior to WWI. However, by the time the Great War started she was considered old and used only as a training ship. Then, in the 1920s, she was in a class all of her own as a crane was placed on her decks. One of her more interesting assignments was to help raise

Most combat ships don’t have the ability of getting close to shore for combat operations. In the past, big ships stayed out at sea and lobbed shells inland with the hope of hitting the target or smaller, less powerful boats would get in close to try and do the job. A new type of ship was needed for battle, and in the past ten years the littoral combat ship (LCS) was introduced. Two classes were built. The USS Freedom class is built by Lockheed using the traditional hull that is seen on most ships. General Dynamics designed the USS Independence and its unique trimaran design. These can carry two MH-60 Seahawk helicopters and can transport an assorted array of land vehicles, equipment and troops. Sporting the latest radar technology and missile systems the LCS can get into the objective area, perform its mission, and move away quickly. The number of these ships to be built has changed based on the secretary of defense of the U.S.; the current number is 26, with 12 already commissioned. As with airplanes, not all ships built are meant to fight the enemy. Some have the job of getting troops to shore which was the case of the WWII-era Higgins boats. Maritime combat units have been experimenting with “submersible canoes” since WWII to get commandos to their target undetected. The Navy SEALs have their own version named the SEAL Delivery Vehicle or SDV. The SDV are launched from submarines, surface craft or dropped from C-130 Hercules planes. The SCUBA-wearing crew of four – a pilot, co-pilot and two other combat swimmers – then make headway to their target. The SDV is a battery-powered vessel that

the USS Squalus. The Squalus was a submarine that sunk off the coast of New Hampshire during a test dive. 33 submariners managed to survive using a new type of breathing device. Once the survivors were rescued – 26 sailors died during the accident – the Kearsarge was on hand to lift the submarine from the depths. The Kearsarge was decommissioned in 1955 and has the distinction of being the first crane ship in U.S. Navy history. Nine other crane ships were commissioned after WWII and none are still in active service. The dawn of flight has been typically accredited to the Wright Brothers flying their airplane in 1903. While this is true for aircraft that are heavier-than-air, other contraptions have flown powered by a lighterthan-air source. To simplify matters for the reader hot air balloons have been around for a lot longer than airplanes, and in the early 1920s the U.S. built a carrier to house these balloons at sea. Curiously named USS Wright, the one-of-a-kind ship was around for the interwar period and soon was converted into a seaplane tender. Recently the navy commissioned a stealth destroyer, the USS Zumwalt, which had technology first used on a ship named the USS Sea Shadow. Built in the 1980s by Lockheed, the Sea Shadow was an experimental ship that had a very unique hull design. Instead of trying to explain the ship’s design, a picture will do the trick. It was intended only to test the feasibility of a stealth ship and was never commissioned into the navy, although it is listed on their registrar. The ship had a crew of twelve and was revealed to the public in 1993. In 2012 it was sold for scrap.

What Would You Do If…

I grew up in a typically nice home. I always felt that my parents had a good marriage and I’m sure like most couples, they would occasionally have a disagreement or even a little fight, but all in all they got along and laughed a lot together and seemed to be very happy together.

I’ve been dating now for over two years. The right guy for me just hasn’t come along yet. Sometimes I get nervous about it, but I try to keep my head about me and believe that I’m doing all the right things. I know what I want and need and that it’s just a matter of time until Mr. Right comes along.

I know that it isn’t anyone’s fault. When it’s the right time, it will happen. But the fighting has changed the whole atmosphere in my home. I can’t stand it and feel so sorry for my younger siblings who also have to live in such a tense atmosphere. It’s no longer the relaxed, happy home I grew up in. Everyone seems to be tense and angry. How do I get my parents to calm down, stop attacking each other and be the parents they both were? I’m feeling guilty even though I think I’m the only sane one right now between the three of us – but I do feel it’s all my fault! Any suggestions?

They each seem to need to be able to figure out whose fault it is and why I’m not married yet. My father will accuse my mother of picking the wrong men for me to go out with. My mother will accuse my father of giving me the wrong advice about how I should act on a date.

ort this out with a team including a rabbi and a therapist. You need to rid yourself of guilt but more importantly live in a harmonious home led by parents who work as a team. The level of rancor and stress in the house is damaging to all and a recipe for a hasty escape from an unpleasant environment. They are setting a terrible example for married life as they deal with the challenge of shidduchim. In other words, this situation is a recipe for a disastrous marriage for you. A rabbi will probably be effective in bringing these points out to your parents. Then he will probably recommend family therapy to get everyone to communicate properly, deal with their own stress, and restore a healthy environment. There may be some deeper underlying issues beneath the blame game. A rabbi can be very pivotal in getting your parents to recognize that they need help for all aspects of the presenting problem – their relationship, their reaction to stress, and helping you get married. However, you cannot be the peacemaker or obvious catalyst for going to family therapy. Go talk to the rabbi and open up completely to him. He can then sit down with your parents to discuss with them how shidduchim are going. Because he will have been primed by you, he will get them to open up about what is going on. Make sure that he will not disclose that you turned to him for help. Stay in touch with the rabbi and the therapist for the long term. You will need some support during the shidduch process and your parents may be too stressed (even if they

figure out how to talk to each other) about getting you to the chuppah to help you sort things out. Stick with your professional team and use them as shidduch coaches since your parents seem to need to deal primarily with their own immediate emotions.

et me assure you, looking for your shidduch, while challenging, is hardly enough to de-stabilize a solid marriage. While it’s unclear what the true source of your parents’ frustration (possibly financial, medical or emotional), I beg you not to take the blame for the toxic atmosphere in your home. It’s almost axiomatic that children feel guilty when their parents fight. An extreme example is when parents divorce, their children often rationalize that if they were better behaved, their parents would have stayed together. If their shalom bayis needs a tune-up, leave that to the professionals. In the meantime, you may wish to invite your parents to pizza or coffee. Reassure your folks that you are grateful for all the efforts they put into finding your zivug. Remind them that, despite their frustration at not finding The One, you remain happy, upbeat and confident that, in time, Mr. Right will ring your doorbell. During the meeting, you may allude to the fact that sometimes you feel bad for your siblings because “with all the calling and checking there is less time for the fun stuff we used to do.” Wrap up the conversation with plans for a family outing – just like the good old days.

f you are ready to get married, then you are ready to sit down with your parents and have a conversation. Tell them how you feel and what you have been observing, how it’s affecting the home, and how it sounds like the arguments are about you. Then ask them if you can take some of the responsibility off of their shoulders. Maybe you should be doing some or all of the calling and follow-up questions. Maybe you need to be more of an active participant. Offer that and say that you are willing to take the pressure off of them and how important it is to all of you that they don’t fight over this. More than that I can’t tell you what to do. You’re not their marriage counsellor and you shouldn’t be, though possibly, if they hear how it’s affecting you, it may be enough to wake them up. So don’t be afraid to have a dialogue with them. It’s important for all of you. Hatzlacha!

The anxiety they seem to experience is bolstered when they think about their 33-year-old niece who is still single or their neighbor’s son who is unwed and living at home at age 40. They worry that their child will possibly wind up the same way. I think our society encourages these fears with all the talk about the “shidduch crisis.” There is almost a collective paranoia that has engulfed so many families. My first bit of advice is that you should try your hardest to be around positive people. Don’t hang out with friends who share the same panicky message. You’re in a good place and you want to stay in a good place. There is no reason why you shouldn’t feel great about your future. Regarding your parents, I think you need to have some words with them. Explain to them that they are doing everything right and there is no reason to point fingers at themselves or each other. However, when you and your siblings hear them fighting over your single status, it is hurtful to everyone in the household and unfair. If they can’t get a grip on their fears, they need to find a professional to help them work out their stuff. They owe it to you and to your siblings to create a calm, loving atmosphere at home.

ever, if both or one are more rigid, or if there is a marital issue, the family therapist will either excuse you from the therapy or will refer your parents to another therapist to help them as a couple. If your family has a trusted rabbi whose counsel they seek, then speaking with him may be a wonderful avenue for you as well. I hope things don’t come to this, but if they cannot stop fighting and the tension is just too much for you to bear, you may want to look into moving out of the house. There are lots of frum young women who take apartments together. Sometimes this involves getting a part-time job to pay for your share. Another option would be to ask a relative or close friend if you can move in temporarily just to take some time away from the chaos at home. You seem like such a together, terrific young woman and I would hate to see you rush into a marriage simply to get out of your house. ow do I get my parents to calm down….? I am going to present a suggestion or two, but before I do, I must tell you the following. We can’t “get” people to do anything. If your parents are going to change, it will be because they are motivated to change; because they want to change. You didn’t do anything to create this situation and ultimately you can’t stop this situation. That will be the decision of your parents. Do they want to continue arguing and creating tension in the home or do they want to

We can’t fix this one for our little girl. Whatever the case, one thing is for certain: their fighting isn’t about you. I do hope your parents stop turning on each other and begin to turn toward each other. (I am writing this just in case they are reading this.) I second Tova Wein’s astute comment about your healthy view of dating, even in your stressful home environment. You may want to try having a heart-to-heart with your parents. Tell them that their fighting is stressing you out! Tell them you are worried about your siblings receiving unhealthy messaging about dating and relationships. Try not to “get into” their stuff too much. Focus on how the impact their blame game is having on you. Don’t hold back when it comes to your feelings. Tell them you do not want to marry someone in a desperate attempt to escape the tension in the house. This is not an attempt to change them, this is an attempt at communicating with them. Then tell them it would mean so much to you if they planned a lighthearted day for the entire family. You can go on a picnic, go ice skating, have a fun movie/pizza day (whatever the family likes). The one rule is no talking about dating or marriage whatsoever. Let’s remember that we are a family and that it is OK to have some fun! I definitely second Sarah Schwartz-Schreiber’s notion of having a wonderful family day! Hopefully that’ll do the trick. If your parents cannot hear your plea, or cannot stop their fighting, then invite your parents to see a therapist with you. Make sure the therapist has experience in family therapy. If both your parents are flexible and open, this could be resolved in a handful of sessions. Maybe even one. How-

You’ll see a smiling face right away, upfront and personal! Studies also show that smiles are contagious. They showed that when people saw a smiling face it took effort for them to frown. They automatically mimicked the smiling facial expression. Finally, studies show people reported “smiling people” to be better looking than other faces. Wow. That’s a lot less trouble than all the grooming we usually require to be so beautiful. It seems like smiling saves a lot of money, time, and trouble by greatly reducing the need for pills, therapists, doctors, manicures, makeup, and hairdressers. So smiling really sounds like a win-win! Now if all that isn’t something to laugh about, I don’t know what is.

wo interesting comments this weekend got me thinking. “Today was a great day,” said my mom, “because we laughed a lot!” “I learned this week from my daughter,” said my sis, “that whether you feel happy and then smile, or smile then feel happy, the exact same mechanisms and channels are in use.” What exactly that means I’m not sure, but it sounds to me like even if you’re not feeling that terrific, you can try and smile and you may get some happiness neurotransmitters released. Which seems a good idea, since it might start you on your way to laughter. And that, my mom – a very wise woman – says helps you have a great day! And who doesn’t want a great day? What with “news” always meaning “bad news!” And our classic childhood protectors, the police, being redefined as the bad guys. And general anxiety at its peak, to the point where we might want to amend the word society to “sanxiety.” Who can resist some extra opportunities for laughter in their life?! A good giggle or a great “hahaha” seems to release a lot of pent-up tension. Which many have, if not close to the surface, hidden in the recesses

HaGaon HaRav Berel Povarsky, Shlita to Grace Dirshu Convention Numerous Other Gedolim to Attend and Address Lomdei Dirshu By Chaim Gold HaGaon HaRav Berel Povarsky, shlita, Rosh Yeshiva of the Ponevezh Yeshiva, will be coming especially from Eretz Yisroel to attend the Dirshu Convention where he will deliver a shiur klali after davening on Shabbos morning and then, on motzoei Shabbos, will make the Hadran and give a keynote address at the melave malka siyum on Masechta Bava Metziah. The Convention, to be held this coming Shabbos Parshas Shemos, 22-24 Teves/ January 20-22, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Stamford, Connecticut, is entitled Shabbos Chizuk L’lomedei Torah. In truth, its name truly encapsulates and defines what the Shabbos is all about. The Shabbos is to pay tribute and give chizuk to the myriad lomdei Torah and their wives who, day in, day out, week after week, month after month, throughout the year, Shabbosim, Yomim Tovim, easy times, hard times… are dedicated to learning Torah and taking regular tests to ensure retention. Climax Will Be Keynote Motzoei Shabbos Melave Malka Siyum Numerous Gedolei Yisrael will grace the convention and deliver addresses paying tribute to the lomdei Torah comprising the worldwide Mishpachas Dirshu. The climax of the Shabbos will be motzoei Shabbos’s keynote session where a siyum on Masechta Bava Metzia will be made. At the siyum, addresses will be given by HaGaon HaRav Berel Povarsky, shlita, Dayan Yonasan Abraham, shlita, a member of the London Beis Din and Rav of the Toras Chaim Shul in Hendon, North West London, HaGaon HaRav Binyomin Eisenberger, shlita, Rav of Kehal Heichal Hatefillah in Boro Park, and Rav Dovid Hofstedter, Nasi Dirshu. Similarly, every Dirshu wife has displayed mesiras nefesh for her husband’s learning and spiritual ascent by enabling him to devote tremendous amounts of time to learning the daily material and then repeatedly reviewing so that he will know the material sufficiently to earn an exemplary mark on the test. This often does not come easily. It frequently means sacrificing the help of a husband in the most hectic of times, such as the morning rush to school

Where do you have a convention where after the seudah on Shabbos afternoon, the ‘taanug’ of sleeping on Shabbos is replaced by the even greater pleasure of learning and chazering another blatt Gemara and another seif in Shulchan Aruch?!” Rav Steinmetz will be introduced by another distinguished international

Inasmuch as the Convention is a sold out event and in order to ensure the proper kavod for davening and learning, Dirshu plans to erect a massive tent on the premises. The tent will also serve to accommodate the burgeoning crowds so that they can hear the shiurim of Rav Povarsky, Rav Steinmentz and numerous other Gedolim in a dignified manner as befitting a maamad of kavod haTorah. “The Shabbos When Totty and Mommy Went to Learn How to Learn More Torah!” After the last Dirshu convention, Dirshu received numerous letters from lomdei Torah and their wives, expressing their feelings about how limud haTorah with a plan has transformed their lives. One woman wrote, “…I would like to share what Dirshu and the Shabbos mean to us. There is no way we can ever express the depth of our gratitude. While my husband, a kollel yungerman, always admired his father who is a great masmid, he didn’t think he was capable of doing the same. At the first Dirshu Shabbos when my husband saw yungeleit just like him becoming Shas Yidden and being tested on the entire Shas, he came home determined to do the same! Since that Shabbos every moment in our life has become a treasure, life is a rush of excitement! “Another amud, another Daf… Baruch Hashem, my husband makes a siyum so often that my two-year old confuses the word siyum and Shabbos seudah. A seudah with a siyum is such a thrill as the children march into the dining room with a special dish while singing a niggun in honor of the siyum…. Although I never imagined I would leave my children behind for a Shabbos, this Shabbos is different. My children treasure the memory of “The Shabbos that Totty and Mommy went to learn how to learn more Torah!”

The beauty of innocence, of laughter, and of snow! I mentally applaud this spectacular display of artistry and life, and warmed by the thoughts the blanket of snow has offered me, I turn around, and go inside.

blasts of frigid air need to be kept at bay, to be prevented from permeating the depths of the soil and from destroying the seeds which slumber therein, awaiting the spring. I marvel at the splendor and the majesty, at the white glare of everything, and I think that in reality, G-d could have chosen to make the color of snow grey, and I am ever so grateful that he did not., and that the world is dressed in white. The neighbors are still playing outside, but now they have moved to the back of their house, choosing the snow covered slide as their new frontier. I recognize that all of nature is the very best playground in more than one season of the year; how in the winter, children can spend hours and days outdoors in the snow, and in the summer, play along the sea shore, with nothing to entertain themselves but the sea and the sand, all in abundance and free for the asking. And I think how the snow, like the sand, teaches us that we leave footprints wherever we go, and that everything we might build- the snowman and the sandcastle- eventually will disappear, because nothing of only material value lasts forever. I marvel that the grains of sand are not cohesive and, like a snowflake, each one is unique and purposeful on its own. Like each one of us. I recognize, then, how much joy there is in simplicity, how we are given so much for free, gifts which are absolutely priceless. Not just in the environment, but in the people who live there; in the warmth of friendship, the wonder in a child’s eyes, and in the comfort of trust. And I am saddened by the thought that so much of this value that has surrendered itself to the more powerful glitz of the artificial and shiny, measured in MPGs and Megabytes. It was Shabbos morning and the first snow of the season was starting to fall. The snow was coming down so softly at first that I wasn’t even sure that it was indeed snowing. The snowfall became heavier, and before long, the neighbors were outside running carefree in their newfound play land. They run and slide on the fresh white coating on the pavement. Sari, the younger sister, aged 21/2 is taking the snow in her hand and eating it. Maybe for the first time. She likes it. I know because she keeps on eating it. I wonder if I should tell her mom. I choose not to. I don’t have the heart. If today would be a Friday, I would, no doubt, be getting a phone call from my colleague. “Ahn Aroisgevorfineh Shnei!” (Yiddish for – A waste of a snowfall!), she would exclaim, totally dejected. “My Mazal! It only snows on the weekends!” I knew that “the teacher” in her was bemoaning the fact that most likely, she would not be off on Monday, as by then there would not be enough snow on the ground to qualify the day as a Snow Day. But I think that there is so much more to this snowfall than just bad timing. I step outside to be a part of the beauty and serenity. Quality of life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. It is a splendid wonderland, and I absorb the beauty along with the chill that goes right through my bones. I am enveloped by the heavy silence. The snow muffles the sounds of nature, stills the swaying of the branches in the wind, and covers the earth like a blanket, tucking it in tightly at the edges. I think of snow’s purpose. Giving it My Best Shot Flu Vaccines Save Lives By Hylton I. Lightman, MD, DCH, FAAP

advise and encourage my patients to get the flu vaccine. It is not perfect and there have been many cases of flu this season even after being vaccinated, but it can be lifesaving. The flu vaccine is made of dead flu viruses. Since they’re dead, you can’t catch the flu from them. When you get a vaccine, it takes about two weeks for your body to be ready to fight the flu virus. In addition, many viruses mimic flu symptoms. Nonetheless, the flu vaccine mitigates against stronger symptoms and a person becoming even sicker. Lest we forget, the flu can kill people. Thank you to Serese Marotta, Chief Operating Officer of Families Fighting Flu (FFF), for allowing me to share her heart wrenching account of losing her beautiful son to the flu. Flu season has begun and like other years, we can’t predict how severe this season will be, but we do know that annual flu vaccinations are our best defense. Unlike the common cold, influenza is a serious and highly contagious disease that tends to develop quickly, especially in children, and can lead to hospitalization or even death. Every year in the U.S., approximately 20,000 children under the age of five are hospitalized, and on average, 100 children die from infection with influenza or its complications. So often we hear “it’s just the flu,” but we need to take the flu seriously. How do I know this? Because my healthy, 5-year-old son, Joseph, lost his life to H1N1 flu in October 2009. I have always been

pro-vaccination and Joseph and his sister received their annual flu vaccinations in September 2009, but H1N1 wasn’t in the vaccine that year. Sadly, the H1N1 vaccine didn’t become available in our community until two weeks after Joseph’s death.

Joseph’s Story Joseph’s story began innocently enough. He was attending kindergarten in the fall of 2009 and threw up on the school bus. Later that day, Joseph continued to throw up and became increasingly lethargic. We called our pediatrician who suggested we take Joseph to the local urgent care. Upon arrival, they found Joseph’s blood oxygen level to be very low and immediately transported him to the local children’s hospital. The rapid flu test came back negative and Joseph was eventually diagnosed with pneumonia. Several days into his hospital stay, the doctors informed us that Joseph’s culture was growing influenza, which was likely H1N1, but not to worry – it was “just the flu” and they’d start him on antiviral medications. Joseph’s condition over the next several days was relatively stable. Various specialists came and went; all of Joseph’s tests appeared normal and we were even discussing his discharge with the doctors. All of that changed on the ninth day of our hospital stay. Joseph’s blood pressure suddenly plummeted, and we were sent back to the ICU. The doctors couldn’t re-

ally figure out what was causing Joseph’s low blood pressure, but they didn’t seem overly alarmed. More testing went on throughout the night, while I tried to distract Joseph with cartoons and discussions about his Halloween costume. The doctor came to me early on the morning of Oct. 18 to say she wanted to put Joseph on a ventilator because his heart and respiration rates were so high and his little body needed a rest. The doctor emphasized it was not a big deal, but Joseph would be unconscious while on the ventilator. I calmly called my husband, who was at home with our young daughter, and asked him to come to the hospital. Minutes later, while I was standing next to Joseph’s bed, he suddenly coded. The next scene was like something on a TV show – doctors and nurses rushing into Joseph’s room. I backed into the hallway so they could do their job, but honestly, I had no idea what was happening. As the minutes ticked away, I began to realize that something was seriously wrong. I continued to wait outside Joseph’s hospital room and finally, the attending doctor came to me, sobbing, and asked me to follow her into Joseph’s room because she needed me to talk to him. Looking back, I think she thought if modern medicine couldn’t save this child, perhaps the sound of his mother’s voice could. I entered Joseph’s room and held his hand as the doctors and nurses

continued to work on him. Finally, the doctor turned to me and said, “I’m so sorry.” My precious son lost his life to influenza that day, and my life was irrevocably changed as a result. My story is not unique. I have met many parents who’ve lost a child to the flu or had a child suffer serious medical complications as a result of the flu. I want parents to understand how critically important it is for all children and their families to get their flu vaccinations each and every year. The flu vaccine is the best protection we have in our fight against influenza. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends annual flu vaccination for everyone six months of age and older. I also want people to understand that getting an annual flu vaccination not only protects you and your family, but it also helps protect others in your community by limiting the potential for an outbreak.

Families Fighting Flu As a result of my loss, I became involved with Families Fighting Flu (FFF), which is a national, non-profit organization comprised of families whose children have suffered serious medical complications or died from influenza, as well as other advocates and healthcare professionals committed to flu prevention. I have since become the Chief Operating Officer at FFF. Together, every day in honor of

he audience – overwhelmingly Jewish, passionately pro-Israel and supremely gullible – applauded wildly. Four years later – his last election behind him, with a month to go in office and with no need to fool Jew or gentile again – Obama took the measure of Israel’s back and slid a knife into it. People don’t quite understand the damage done to Israel by the U.S. abstention that permitted passage of a Security Council resolution condemning Israel over settlements. The administration pretends this is nothing but a restatement of long-standing U.S. opposition to settlements. Nonsense. For the last 35 years, every administration, including a re-election-seeking Obama himself in 2011, has protected Israel with the U.S. veto because such a Security Council resolution gives immense legal ammunition to every boycotter, anti-Semite and zealous European prosecutor to penalize and punish Israelis. An ordinary Israeli who lives or works in the Old City of Jerusalem becomes an international pariah, a potential outlaw. To say nothing of the soldiers of Israel’s citizen army. “Every pilot and every officer and every soldier,” said a confidant of Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, “we are waiting for him at The

Hague.” I.e., the International Criminal Court. Moreover, the resolution undermines the very foundation of a half-century of American Middle East policy. What becomes of “land for peace” if the territories Israel was to have traded for peace are, in advance, declared to be Palestinian land to which Israel has no claim? The peace parameters enunciated so ostentatiously by Secretary of State John Kerry on Wednesday are nearly identical to the Clinton parameters that Yasser Arafat was offered and rejected in 2000 and that Abbas was offered by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in 2008. Abbas, too, walked away. Kerry mentioned none of this because it undermines his blame-Israel narrative. Yet Palestinian rejectionism works. The Security Council just declared the territories legally Palestinian – without the Palestinians having to concede anything, let alone peace. The administration claims a kind of passive innocence on the text of the resolution, as if it had come upon it at the last moment. We are to believe that the ostensible sponsors – New Zealand, Senegal, Malaysia and a Venezuela that cannot provide its own people with toilet paper, let alone food – had for months been sweating the details of Jewish housing in East Jerusalem. Nothing new here, protests deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes: “When we see the facts on the ground, again deep into the West Bank, beyond the separation bar-

rier, we feel compelled to speak up against those actions.” This is a deception. Everyone knows that remote outposts are not the issue. Under any peace, they will be swept away. Even the right-wing Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman, who lives in one of these West Bank Settlements, has stated publicly that “I even agree to vacate my settlement if there really will be a two-

Trial on Error By Azi Rosenblum

It’s an amazing thing that as soon as you decide what kind of car you want to get, it is everywhere! While there has been no real change in the number of vehicles of that make and model, the fact that it’s now your future car makes it somehow more visible. That’s kind of how I feel about small businesses. In my line of work, I’m all about small business owners. I find them captivating and I love to observe what they do and how they do it. Recently, I have been taking great interest in how they handle mistakes. Nobody wants to make mistakes, but the reality is that at some point it’s going to happen. Shlomo HaMelech said, “A righteous man falls down seven times and gets up.” Donald

Rumsfeld is quoted saying “It isn’t making mistakes that’s critical; it’s correcting them and getting on with the principal task.” So it seems that mistakes and errors in judgement set the stage for how you get up, how you recover, and how you move forward. When it comes to responding to the oversights and bad calls of business, I have notices a few approaches. Option 1: Do nothing. Despite how many employees and customers have noticed or been impacted by the situation, there are those who choose to do nothing. Maybe it’s pride, maybe it’s fear, but exercising the choice to do nothing is one option that some take. Ultimately, this path leads to loss of trust and is the

silent killer of a business’s reputation. Customer and employees alike lose a fundamental sense of faith when a situation is neither acknowledged or addressed. So… don’t choose option 1. Option 2: The spin, AKA the blame game. There is a terrible temptation to do whatever is necessary to never be wrong. In this gear, the choice is made to protect the reputation of a business or business leader by justifying, denying or otherwise disputing the error, thereby resolving the issue by making it a non-issue. Driven by a fight or flight instinct for self-preservation, this one is another bad call. Dishonesty is never OK, but even in situations where there is a reasonable argument or a logical way to avoid taking ownership of the mistake, this effort will result in similar results as option 1, so…. don’t choose this option either. Option 3: Own it and focus on solutions. There is nothing more impressive and no better way to diffuse a situation than taking ownership of the issue and the process of resolving it. It makes no difference how big or small the error, and in turn how big or small the impact on the other party.

A business relationship is just that: a relationship. Barring a malicious or grossly negligent scenario, if something is a mistake, all you can do is fix it, correct the damage as best as possible, and avoid it happening again. Yes, the customer or employee may remain upset, but when that storm passes, what will remain is the relationship and the way you responded. At the funeral of Eddie Dopkin, a local business owner whose family I once rented office space from, his sister was giving tribute to his leadership in their family business and quoted his marching orders to his team as: “Lets aim for 98% perfect. The other 2% is impossible and we would be better off focusing our energy on how we handle it when it comes up.” Option 3 takes a lot of guts, but it’s the way to go! Are We Seeing the Beginning of the Cold War 2.0? BY NACHUM SOROKA

Even Ronald Reagan knew to “trust, but verify” when it came to the Russians

in 1998 which allowed Russian intelligence access to military information in the amount of “a stack of printed copier paper three times the height of the Washington Monument.” So sanctions aren’t new when it comes to Russia.

A Necessary Evil It should be obvious to anyone who follows the news headlines on a regular basis that the Russians, particularly under Putin, are a conniving bunch of deceitful, self-interested players. They grant asylum to enemies of democracy, provide funding and military aid to terrorist organizations and despotic leaders, and blatantly annex lands which do not belong to them. President Putin has been known to throw his political rivals in prison, wrongfully seize internationally owned businesses, and poison those who speak out against him. But all this has not stopped world leaders, including American ones, from reaching out to Russia in order to harbor warm relations with the country. Having a working relationship with Russia can be considered a necessary evil. As the world’s two largest owners of nuclear weapons, a conflict between the U.S. and Russia can wipe humankind off the face of the earth in short time. Additionally, Russia’s massive size – its borders span across Europe, Central and East Asia, and the Arctic – allow it influence on many countries which are vital to the maintenance of democracy and Western interest in the world. And, in truth, Russia has been a vital ally in the effort to quell the influence of Islamist movements in some of the world’s most volatile regions such as in the successful

defeat of the Taliban in Afghanistan. On the other hand, the country maintains strong ties with Tehran and Pyonyang, the two most dangerous regimes in the world today. And as one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, Russia’s vote is necessary in order for key global security measures to pass. Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the United States

During the Bush presidency, the two nations did have some serious disagreements – most notably one regarding the U.S. installing a missile defense system in Poland – but the countries and their leaders remained cordial with one another. And by the time Barack Obama took office, the U.S. struck a reconciliatory tone in order to mend whatever strain was placed between the two powers, with then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton clumsily offering up a “reset” button (which actually spelled “overload” in Russian) to Sergey Lavrov, her Russian counterpart. Both the U.S. and Russia then set out on

a campaign to reduce their stockpiles of nuclear weaponry.

1980s Foreign Policy? President Obama seemed to have been relishing the generally complacent dealings between the U.S. and Russia, and during his 2012 reelection campaign, he and his camp repeatedly mocked Mitt Romney’s assertion that Russia was the United States “number one geopolitical foe.” Obama famously threw his “the 1980s are now calling to ask for their foreign policy back because the Cold War’s been over for 20 years” zinger at Romney during the third presidential debate that year. And John Kerry accused Romney of getting his facts about Russia straight from Rocky IV. In hindsight, looking back over the last term of Obama’s presidency, his team’s bluster about Russia is on the level of his comparing ISIS to a JV team. The past four years have showcased how far Vladimir Putin will go up against U.S. interests and how deceitful Russia can be. It seems that there is not a global crisis occurring these days without Russia and Putin somehow in the mix. As much as Obama’s dismissal of the Russian threat was campaign puffery, U.S.-Russia relations have deteriorated so much recently that the president needed to enact law and order on Russian diplomats a mere three weeks before he leaves office.

Russia Stirs the Pot How did things get to be this bad? The beginning of this new round of enmity may be linked back to the blatant annexation of the Ukrainian territory of Crimea by the Russians in 2014 after its

What Will the Future Bring? The U.S. has found itself outmaneuvered by Putin and his gang for the past four years. Relations with Russia have reached their lowest point since the 1980s. Indeed, ties with many of the U.S.’s allies have worn thin under Obama’s watch, including Egypt, Israel, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, and Tur-

key, while former foes like Cuba and Iran have been brought near. In contrast with President Obama’s diplomatic doctrine, President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to make good on reclaiming many of these relationships. During his campaign, Trump insinuated he would allow Russia to remain in Crimea and lift the sanctions imposed on Russia in response to its actions there. Most recently, he called into question the U.S. government’s assertion that it was indeed Russia which hacked into the DNC’s server accounts and indirectly influenced the U.S. election. “It could be somebody else. And I also know things that other people don’t know, and so they cannot be sure of the situation,” he said on December 31. Echoing this sentiment, this week, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange sat down with Fox News’ Sean Hannity and insisted, “We can say, we have said, repeatedly that over the last two months that our source is not the Russian government and it is not a state party,” Assange said. He added that the claim of Russia being behind the release of 50,000 emails during the presidential campaign was made as an effort to “delegitimize” Donald Trump. Trump has continually waxed pro-Putin, calling him a “real leader” and a “really smart man.” Clearly, Putin welcomes Trump’s isolationist policies which would allow him more leeway to influence world affairs. The question remains if Trump’s presidency will succeed in hitting the reset button on U.S.-Kremlin ties or lead everyone back into the cold 1980s.

The U.S. government is of the opinion that Snowden compromised national security and emboldened terrorists worldwide. Obama elected to cancel a planned meeting with Putin in 2013 after Russia extended its offer of asylum to the traitor. This past June, the Washington Post reported that Russian hackers infiltrated the servers of the Democratic National Committee. The hackers were only assumed to be Russian: they went by names like guccifer 2.0 and DC Leaks, but a cybersecurity firm called CrowdStrike was able to confirm that the hackers were indeed not lone individuals, but were a group of Russian agents working for groups such as the Russian GRU. Leaked emails from Guccifer led to the resignation of DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Shultz and may have caused the disaffection of many erstwhile Bernie Sanders supporters from the Hillary Clinton camp. The most disturbing revelation of all was that the Russian hacking campaign, using the alias “Shadow Brokers,” succeeded in gaining access to some NSA servers.

The U.S. responded by revoking Russia’s acceptance to the G8 political forum, a move whose severity was downplayed by Putin, who continued to stir unrest in the region. Eventually, the U.S. and its allies were forced to impose a number of sanctions on Russian firms and individuals with close ties to Putin. Russia had officially become a pariah to the West. There is also the ongoing civil war in Syria. The world is currently aghast at the massive civilian casualties brought about by Russian airstrikes on the city of Aleppo as the Syrian Army attempted to regain control of the city from rebel forces. Since the beginning of the civil war in Syria, Putin’s government has backed its longtime ally Bashar Assad’s forces without regard to any potential collateral damage. Back in 2012, President Obama warned President Assad that the use of chemical weapons on his country’s civilian population would trigger a U.S. military response. But Obama’s promise was a hollow threat, and Assad got away with murdering his own people. Many experts believe that Putin was emboldened to take a more confrontational role in Syria when President Obama failed to make good on his vow not to allow Assad to cross the “red line” of using chemical weapons on helpless civilians. The latest bout of Russian-induced heartburn for the U.S. and the Obama administration has to do with hacking, or to put it in classic terms, espionage. The Russian attitude towards U.S. cyber-security has always been dismissive, and there may be no better exam-

others; Often blames others for his or her mistakes or misbehavior; Has been spiteful or vindictive at least twice within the past 6 months. There are three settings that we look at when analyzing a child’s behavior: home, school, and social interaction with peers. Some children have symptoms of ODD in only one setting, whereas others will have symptoms in all three settings. There is no medication for ODD. Medication could only be appropriate if the child has another diagnosis in addition to ODD such as ADHD or an anxiety disorder. The diagnosis of ODD does not have a specific intervention since the intervention is very much dependent on the root of the child’s behavior. Some children by their nature do not naturally know how to regulate their emotions or tolerate frustration. Other children developed these behaviors in response to abuse or neglect. Sometimes, there is an illness or death in the family that can greatly affect the child. The parenting style of the child’s parents might also be a factor. Also, conditions such as anxiety, ADHD, or learning disorders can be a major factor in the child’s behavior. There are many possible interventions for ODD. Some of them are focused on the interaction between the parents and the child, some of them are more focused on the child himself, and sometimes there will be a synthesis between the two approaches. As mentioned, it is very dependent on the source of the child’s behavior. The ODD diagnosis is more complicated than just counting symptoms and should only be made by a clinician who has experience with ODD. Even if a child is diagnosed, that does not mean that he has a disease; it is merely a description of a group of behaviors that are clustering together. Furthermore, the diagnosis of ODD by itself does not offer a complete picture of the child’s challenges, but it is a red flag that the child needs help. This is a service of Relief Resources. f you’ve spent any time on the internet, you know it’s a vast rabbit hole of places to waste precious minutes of your life. “Will it Blend?” is one of those places, a video series showing off the Blendtec line of blenders. The videos feature the company’s founder, smiling in a white lab coat and safety goggles, dropping the day’s experiment into one of his company’s appliances. Not surprisingly, avocados, credit cards, and Big Mac Extra-Value meals all blend just fine — but iPhones, golf clubs, and an English-German dictionary on CD-ROM don’t fare nearly so well. (“Don’t try this at home,” they warn.) Taxpayers play a similar game. It’s not as fun to watch as a Justin Bieber doll in a blender, but it’s potentially far more profitable. That game, of course, is “Will it Deduct?” The results don’t go viral in the same way as the “Will it Blend?” videos. But they do wind up on the internet, in the form of Tax Court opinions. This week’s “Will it Deduct?” story features Herbie Vest, a CPA who launched H.D. Vest, an investment advisory firm for fellow CPAs. He took the company public and stayed

on until 2001, when he sold out to Wells Fargo for $125 million. By that point, he found himself looking for a new challenge in life. He found it in his own past. When Vest was just two years old, his father was found dead in the bathroom of his Texas shop.

Investigators ruled it a suicide, but in 2003, he received an anonymous letter alleging murder. So Vest began investigating this coldest of cases. In 2007, he tried to salvage that effort with a book or movie, hiring a writer to tell his story and a PR firm to market it. But Vest never found a killer, and the story never found a buyer. You can probably guess what Vest did with his pile of bills. That’s right,

fare better than a toilet plunger in a blender? Here’s what the judge said: By January 2008 [Vest] had been investigating his father’s death for five years. As of that time, his investigative activities had not generated a single dollar of revenue. Those activities generated no income during 2008, 2009, or 2010, and [Vest] had no reasonable prospect of generating future income. Petitioner never developed a business plan for commercializing his father’s story. He has no professional

background in writing, book publishing, or media. He did not modify the scale or scope of his investigative activities during 2008-2010 in an effort to minimize the substantial losses he was incurring. Sadly for Vest, his investigation did not deduct, and now he owes the IRS $4 million in tax. Don’t let Vest’s disappointment stop you from playing “Will it Deduct?” Section One of the tax code imposes a tax on every taxpayer and sets forth the various rates. Think of it as a “red light” on the road to financial independence. But the rest of the code outlines hundreds of exceptions to that tax — the deductions, credits, loopholes, and strategies that give a “green light” for taxpayers to pulse, chop, and liquefy their tax bills. So make sure to take advantage of those green lights and start planning today.

Fluffy Blueberry Muffins (adapted from Kosher.com)

What You Will Need: 2 eggs, separated ¾ cup sugar 2 tsp baking powder 1 ¼ cups potato starch 1/3 cup oil

½ - 1/3 cup blueberries (or mini chocolate chips) 2 Tbl of sugar and 2 tsp. of cinnamon mixed together

Preperation: 1. Pre-heat oven to 360 degrees. Line cupcake pans with liners. In the bowl of an electric mixer, beat egg whites o high until stiff peaks form. Slowly add sugar, baking powder, potato starch, egg yolks, and oil. 2. Spoon scant ¼ cup of batter into cupcake holders. Sprinkle tops of cupcakes with sugar and cinnamon. Bake for 25 minutes or until a cake tester comes out clean. Cool and enjoy for anytime, including Pesach! Makes 14 cupcakes.

Serves 8-12

Preperation:

1/4 cup butter 6-8 ¾ inch slices soft bread such as challah 1/4 cup light brown sugar 8 large eggs 1 1/2 cups milk 2 tablespoons maple syrup 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 teaspoon cinnamon ½ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon orange extract, optional powdered sugar and maple syrup for serving

1. Preheat the oven to 350°. Melt the butter in 9x13-inch baking dish. Layer the bread two slices deep in the pan. 2. Whisk the sugar, eggs, milk, maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon, salt and orange extract (if using) together. Pour the mixture evenly over the bread. Cover tightly and place the pan in the refrigerator overnight. 3. An hour before serving, remove pan from the refrigerator and set at room temperature. Preheat the oven to 350°. Bake uncovered for 45 to 50 minutes or until the bread is browned. Serve hot sprinkled with powdered sugar and warm maple syrup on the side.

Slow Cooker French Onion Soup Ingredients:

On winter nights we want recipes that are ready when we are. Here are two “fix-it and forget-it” recipes that are sure to be a part of your winter meal rotations. Enjoy!

Serves 10-12

Preperation:

1. Place the onion slices in a 5-quart (or larger) slow cooker. Stir in the butter and olive oil, salt, and pepper 2. Cover and cook on LOW overnight or for up to12 hours. The onions should be dark golden brown and soft. 3. Stir in the balsamic vinegar and the broth. Cover and continue cooking on LOW for 6 to 8 hours or longer. Longer cooking will intensify the flavors. 4. Taste and season with more salt and pepper if desired. Add the beer and red wine. 5. Heat the oven to 350°F. Ladle the soup and onions into oven-safe bowls and place the bowls in a baking pan. Top each bowl with a slice of toast and ¼ cup of the shredded cheese. 7. Bake on a rack in the upper third of the oven until the cheese is completely melted, 10-15 minutes. Turn the oven to broil and broil the soup for 2 to 3 minutes or until the cheese is bubbling and browned. Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes, then serve. RubyLaskerDesigns
