A message from the Mayor
Council is focused on getting our community including local businesses back on their feet in the post-lockdown period. Council initiatives such as the outdoor dining and live performance guidelines will help hospitality bounce back

and generate much needed interest and local spend. We turned off the parking meters during lockdown and we have left them off while we consult with main street businesses. Our local artists, small business owners, neighbours and community leaders will be part of the next phase of Inner West Fest and Edge in February and March 2022. Dive in The beaches and jetties scattered around our peninsula have long been the domain of dogs, kids, and boat owners. But that was before we had to endure 106 days at home, without beach access. As spring arrived, and temperatures started to climb, locals made the most of our harbourside location. With restrictions in place, only a lucky few could get into Dawn Fraser Baths and desperate times calls for desperate measures so taking the plunge into a sometimes-murky Sydney Harbour was a welcome relief. But is it safe to swim in the harbour? The short answer is yeah, nah but you’ll probably be ok.
If you do decide to take the plunge there are a few golden rules: • Keep an eye out for oysters as they’re razor sharp and leave nasty cuts. • After heavy rain, wait three days before swimming due to stormwater waste. • Look out for bull sharks known to explore Parramatta River in the warmer months (November-May).

An ode to Balmain When Angel Aromatics set out to create a range of all-natural perfumes, they didn’t have to venture far for inspiration. Owner Susanna explains “We all live and work locally and share a real love for the area. We wanted the new range to reflect this.” Although trials were held before the final fragrance selection, there were a few scents Susanna knew they had to include. “Balmain in spring is all about jasmine! St Darling, our signature fragrance, is reminiscent of the village we call home. It has crisp top notes of

Make it glow
More time at home has made us all question how we can improve our living spaces. One prominent trend is the installation of fireplaces. “We’ve seen a surge in demand for efficient gas fireplaces that enhance the living space and draws people together in a warm and comfortable setting,” Simon at The Heater Man says. Aesthetically the linear look fire is becoming increasingly popular in modern homes with the double sided fires coming into play to separate spaces in larger open plan living and dining areas. Advances in technology mean the fireplace can be integrated into the surrounding features of the room, whether that be custom cabinetry, the TV and even artwork. Some fireplace systems can run their exhaust systems up to 30 metres and can be configured vertically, horizontally, and even run the exhaust below the floor level. Love grows in little houses As we enjoy new freedoms, this Christmas will be extra special with friends and family to share it with. It’s been a tough year so take time to enjoy Christmas and end the year off well.

Inspiration at every turn Growing up in Balmain, local artist Lara Scolari knows the area better than most. As a child she loved exploring our intricate peninsula on bike. As an adult she appreciates the sense of community and creative energy. “Balmain exudes creativity”, says Lara. “Whether it’s chefs, florists or visual artists like myself, creatives have always gravitated here and it’s wonderful to see new creative spaces pop up.” Lara still loves exploring our hidden parks and waterways. “Lately I’ve been enjoying
Peacock Point and the little beach in front of Colgate.” Although our lush peninsula is a constant inspiration, there’s one place Lara is sure to find her creativity – home! “My little house on Beattie Street is my creative space, art studio and gallery. This is where all the magic happens!”

For the love of beer In little over 12 months, White Bay Beer Co has made a splash on the local beer scene. Darling sat down with the creatives behind this much-loved local brew, Jess and Dennis, to talk all things beer.
The local beer scene is booming, what’s the fascination with beer (apart from the fact that it’s delicious)? Beer is fascinating because of the near infinite flavour combinations you can come up with when making it. Unlike wine, which largely derives all its character from a single base ingredient (grapes), beer is comprised of four base ingredients (yeast, malt, hops and water) all of which have different types, flavours, and chemistry. Each ingredient adds a unique flavour and character to the finished beer. What do you enjoy most about your role as brewers? As a relatively small brewery we work directly with producers and growers. To be able to translate their passion for their agricultural produce into a consumable beverage is a privilege. You’ve released some crazy flavours, where do you get your inspiration? Everywhere outside of work really. From our travels, food, other brewers, pop culture and crazy dreams. Inspiration can strike at any time! How long does it take to develop a new beer, and what’s the process? To be honest, it’s not long. We’re generally pretty comfortable with the base beer we’re brewing. With some of the more unique ingredients we may do some research or phone a brewer mate for advice, but a lot of it is just shooting from the hip.
Has there been a flavour combination that didn’t make the cut? We really strive to not waste beer. The batches that haven’t made the cut are usually Sunny, our hazy Australian pale ale, due to strange fermentation issues as opposed to strange ingredient use. We pride ourselves on our ability to correct ‘issues’. If we’ve added too much of a single flavour, we’ll add another ingredient to bring things back into balance. You not only brew together, you’re also a couple. How do you manage that? Like in any relationship there are good days and bad, but for the most part it’s very enjoyable. Our work ethic and values are very much aligned. It’s comforting to know that Summer 2021
there’s someone on your team who always has your back and shares you passion and dedication to the craft. We pull some long hours in the brewery, and our biggest relationship challenge is who’s cooking dinner at the end of a long day. It generally ends up being a local restaurant or pub.

What’s your favourite White Bay beer and why? Our Lager, formerly known as Union Lager. It’s a European style brewed with German malt, hops and yeast. It’s the most difficult beer for us to brew and spends ages in the tank conditioning. Everything about the beer speaks to process and patience which is something we take a lot of pride in. In an area that’s flooded with large scale draught taps, Lager stands out as a beacon of hope for a style that’s been done an injustice by decades of accountant-run-breweries and hostile corporate takeovers.

Active at any age We all know exercise is good for us, but it does much more than just improve our physical fitness. A lifelong exercise program is the surest way to help you thrive at any age.
Jeremy, owner of Vision Personal Training Balmain, says it’s never too late to start exercising. “It doesn’t matter if you’re 25 or 55, there’s a place for exercise at every stage of a person’s life. Find an activity you enjoy and fits in with your lifestyle. Any type of movement is great!” 20’s “Your 20’s is the perfect time to build a foundation of fitness because your body is strong and resilient. Turn your exercise regime into a habit, that’ll make it easier to keep it up as you get older”, says Jeremy. You should try to exercise at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week.

“There’s a place for exercise at every stage of a person’s life.” 30’s In our 30s, our body starts to lose muscle which makes resistance training especially important. This is a great time to join a gym and start lifting weights. Women are often worried about bulking up, but Jeremy says this won’t happen because women have a different hormone profile to men. “Weight training is important for women, especially as they get older, because it doesn’t just strengthen the muscles, it also increases bone density.”
40’s Our bodies naturally start to decline in middle age. Muscles begin to lose mass and elasticity which slows our metabolism, making it easier to gain weight. Aim for three to five cardio workouts per week. “Cardio doesn’t necessarily mean running on a treadmill for 30 minutes, it can be walking with friends, swimming, or dancing. There’re plenty of low-impact alternatives, just make sure you incorporate some resistance training as well.” 50’s You may experience aches and pains daily, but don’t let that stop you from exercising. Low-impact activities
like walking, biking, and swimming are easy on your joints. You may be even sorer after vigorous workouts so try reducing the intensity and exercise more often instead. In your 50’s it’s important to strengthen the muscles in your abdomen and back to fight the body’s natural tendency to curve forward. Because the risk for osteoporosis increases after menopause it’s vital for women to keep up the resistance training. 60’s Although 60 is the new 50, a few tweaks to your exercise regime are needed at this stage. Jeremy says “Try to get 30 minutes of low-impact activity five times a week and Summer 2021
lift weights or use resistance training two to three times a week to keep muscles and bones strong. Also start working on your balance to prevent falls later in life.” 70’s+ As you get older it’s important to maintain your strength and flexibility. Continue your low-impact aerobic exercise every week and use resistance training to keep muscles strong. Kids and screens Parents know the common side effects of excessive screen time – constant arguments about when to turn them off. According to Queenie, Principal Optometrist at Balmain Vision, there may be a more serious side effect to be aware of. Myopia, or short-sightedness (difficulty seeing objects in the distance) is rapidly becoming a serious health concern around the world, and Australia is no exception. Queenie explains that most parents don’t know what myopia is, and don’t recognise the related health risks. “This is concerning given that myopia is associated with an increased risk of blindness from retinal detachment, glaucoma and myopic macular degeneration.”
Having parents with myopia increases a child’s risk of developing the disease but environmental factors also play a role. Near work, such as reading from a book or screen, and lack of time spent outdoors are contributing factors. “Some studies have found a link between myopia and screen use but this doesn’t mean screen time itself causes myopia. The rising rates of myopia are related to near work behaviours and children today are reading from screens.”
Signs of myopia in kids: • Holding books and tablets close to the face • Sitting very close to the TV • Headaches • Squinting when looking at objects far away • Nausea after reading Over the past 18-months, children have inevitably spent less time outdoors and more time in front of screens and findings are already showing that COVID-19 may have increased the myopia prevalence in younger schoolaged children. Queenie advises parents to watch out for any changes in their kids’ reading and screen behaviour. “Although myopia can’t be cured, there are many effective treatments to delay its progression. Children should spend at least 90 minutes a day outdoors, and less time doing near work activities such as gaming and using computers. Reconnecting post COVID After 18-months of lockdowns and social distancing, it’s time to reconnect with the world. Although it’s a welcome relief, for many of us, stress levels remain high, and this can easily push our nervous system into fight or flight mode. and counting Factories and wharfies are long gone and today our streets are lined with cafes, trendy boutiques, and hairdressers. One constant has remained though – the pubs.
Someone who’s observed this transformation up close is Maureen Thornett, owner of Royal Oak Balmain. Maureen says, “When I bought Royal Oak in 1988, I didn’t know the area. I visited every hotel on the peninsula and none of them had particularly good food so offering great service and excellent food seemed like an opportunity.”
Royal Oak is one of the oldest pubs in the area and many patrons from those early days still come back bringing their kids and grandkids. “Catering to a changing demographic is part of the challenge but if someone would’ve told me back then that we’d have to supply highchairs and change tables I would’ve laughed at them.” The pub has survived recessions, Balmain’s evolution into a family mecca and two lockdowns. “You have to persevere and move with the times but also resist the urge to change to suit the latest fad.” “To succeed in this industry requires a lot of commitment. 30 years as a hotelier can take its toll, but I’m fortunate to come from a family that is strong, loyal, and understands the importance of never giving up. Without their support I wouldn’t have lasted.” Maureen’s youngest daughter Sophie works alongside her and they’re both overwhelmed by the support the community showed during the latest lockdown. “With patrons like that I can probably go on for another 30 years” says Maureen with her signature smile.
Back then, Balmain was working class and pubs were men’s territory. In her first few weeks of service Maureen didn’t see one woman in the pub. “I wanted a pub for everyone and once I added a woman’s touch and made sure the language in the bar was kept in check, things started to change.”

Let’s get reading with local author Wendy Milton As a child, Wendy dreamt of being a children’s book writer. Upon her retirement as an English teacher, she devoted herself to writing children’s books. She’s written thirteen, including the exciting Zach’s Story series. Knowing that children are reading and enjoying her books is priceless to Wendy, and positive feedback to her is gold. A University of California study found that children are exposed to 50% more words through reading than through television. Another found that reading reduces feelings of stress by 68%!

What’s in a frame? After more than three months in lockdown, parents are now professionals in the ‘Jack of all trades’ department and full-time optometrists Paul and Taeyon are no exception. “We became teachers as well as full time entertainers. When it came to entertainment, we decided to delve into classics like Back to The Future and The Matrix.” Whilst immersed in the alternate universe of movies, Paul and Taeyon’s children kept commenting on how cool the characters glasses were. It takes a village From small beginnings, 20 for 1 Community continues to grow and now serves more than 260 meals weekly to local residents doing it tough. Partnering with Rozelle Neighbourhood Centre and Vinnies, 20 for 1 is all about sharing the love around our community, in a practical way. “We can make a big difference in people’s lives just by letting them know that someone cares”, says Marco DeAngelis who founded the program. At its heart, 20 for 1 Community is about teaming up with friends and local businesses and doing something for others. The many volunteers that work tirelessly every day talk about
how a nutritious yummy meal can put a smile on a resident’s face when times are challenging. The name 20 for 1 Community comes from the concept of delivering twenty meals for one community. It also shares its name with the postcode 2041 – it’s home, the Balmain peninsula.
A delicious meal is much more than a donation. It says, we care about you.
Many local cafes, restaurants and food providores support the program and talk about how it inspires their staff with the spirit of sharing. Now, hampers, snacks and other goods are donated to those in need as the initiative continues to grow. The next stage of the program is looking towards supporting school children who may lack access to nutritional meals during their school day. It only takes a little to do a lot! If untreated, hearing loss not only impacts on our hearing and social life, it can also lead to other health issues including: Hearing can be considered your social sense, and as humans we crave social connection. Because we’re social creatures, hearing loss can have a fundamental impact on how we communicate and connect with others. Untreated hearing loss can change how we enjoy social gatherings, theatre, music, and how we perceive emotions. Asking for a repeat or saying “What?” for the third time can also cause frustration and a breakdown in this much needed social connection. A 2011 study by Johns Hopkins Medicine and the National Institute on Aging found that adults with hearing loss are significantly more likely to develop dementia over time than those who retain their hearing.

The pub revival Pubs have always been part of the fabric of Balmain and Rozelle, and many residents cite it as the reason they live here. In the past six months, there’s been some exciting developments on the scene. New to the hospitality scene, Peninsula Hospitality Group, has acquired the 164-year-old Dry Dock Hotel in Balmain. The group is led by experienced operator James Ingram, who has worked in the industry for over 25 years. “Our plan is to operate the pub in its current form for an initial period while we plan for some much-needed reinvigoration”, James said. Set within the iconic, heritage listed 3 Weeds pub, Merivale has brought the flavours of Totti’s to the area. Totti’s Rozelle is offering Mike Eggert’s much-loved Italian menu complete with all the favourites including the signature wood-fired bread and home-made antipasto.

Owned by the Stevens family for more than three decades, private pub investment group led by veteran operator Ray Reilly bought the pub. The group own a number of Inner West establishments including Sydney Park Hotel,
The Exchange Hotel White Cockatoo Hotel and The Henson. The new owners will continue the much loved atmosphere ‘The London’ has always offered. The Exchange Hotel will be transformed into a boutique hotel, with a cool wine bar and open balconies. The heritage of the building will return to its former glory standing tall at its prominent corner position. As borders open, the hotel will be popular for tourists seeking an inner-city taste of bars, pubs, and local restaurants.
