“And if you’ve never tried lionfish, I encourage you to give it a taste,” Hart said. “Lionfish is a delicious, mild, white fish, and it’s a great way to enjoy a meal while supporting conservation efforts.” The festival tastings offer more than a culinary introduction, they give people who may never participate in a lionfish tournament a hands-on way to become part of the solution. The weekend will also introduce visitors to the FWC Reef Rangers, the program hosting the event and one of the agency’s key initiatives for supporting lionfish removal across the state. The Reef Rangers program focuses on education, outreach, tournament support and participation in the annual FWC Lionfish Challenge, a free online competition that runs each year from May through September. Divers who remove and submit lionfish can earn prizes while contributing to statewide removal efforts. The Pensacola Invitational fits naturally into that larger mission. “Our ultimate goal is to educate the public about the lionfish invasion and the importance of removing this invasive species from our waters,” Hart said. “The Reef Rangers and Pensacola Lionfish Invitational help support FWC’s larger conservation goals by bringing people together, raising awareness and showing the public how they can get involved in lionfish removal efforts.” Hart joined FWC in June 2024 as its Lionfish Outreach Coordinator. Coming from a media and fishingindustry background, he now works with dive shops, divers and schools across Florida, provides outreach and education and supports lionfish events around the state. For Hart, that work is about more than raising awareness — it’s about giving people a clear way to turn that awareness into action. For those who are not ready to take up a spear, there are still plenty of ways to contribute. People can learn about the invasion, encourage responsible lionfish removal and seek out lionfish as a seafood choice. The Pensacola festival will offer even more ways to get involved. Reef Rangers staff will be on hand to discuss lionfish management, while representatives from Catch a Florida Memory will showcase FWC’s free Saltwater Angler Recognition Program. A lineup of vendors, raffles

and other activities will add to the weekend’s festivities. “Everyone is welcome!” Hart said. “It’s a great opportunity to learn more about our conservation efforts, try some delicious lionfish, and even participate in raffles.” That sense of community is key to tackling an invasion that spans a vast area and cannot be addressed by a single tournament or agency. Because lionfish reproduce so quickly, removal will remain an ongoing effort. Still, targeted harvests can help reduce local populations, protect native species and reefs, and keep attention focused on the threat. Hart said the sheer number of lionfish harvested through organized efforts surprises people, but so does the scale of the population that remains. “The number of lionfish harvested each year would amaze a lot of people, but it is still only a fraction of the overall population,” he said. That reality makes the competition about more than declaring a winner; it’s about keeping the fight against lionfish moving forward. It’s a competition, but the bigger story goes beyond the leaderboard. Divers will head out in search of lionfish, return with their catches and see how their haul stacks up against other teams. But at Plaza de Luna, the focus will be on what happens when conservation becomes a community effort. A diver can contribute by harvesting lionfish. A chef can contribute by putting the fish on a plate. A family can contribute by learning why the species is invasive. A diner can contribute simply by ordering it. And in a coastal community like Pensacola, those individual choices can add up. The 2026 FWC Pensacola Lionfish Invitational and Festival will take place Sept. 25–27 at Plaza de Luna and Palafox Pier. The free, family-friendly festival will be open to the public from 10 am to 6 pm Sept. 26 and from 10 am to 5 pm Sept. 27, with activities and programming for all ages. “Bring your family and join in the fun,” Hart said. “Conservation is a community effort!” For tournament registration, rules, official event details and more information on lionfish programming, visit the FWC Reef Rangers Lionfish Invitational page at reefrangers.myfwc. com/lionfish-invitational and follow @FWCReefRangers on Facebook.■

TAKING BACK THE REEF FIRST ANNUAL FWC PENSACOLA LIONFISH INVITATIONAL

By Morgan Cole

P

ensacola’s Gulf waters are home to a beautiful but unwelcome predator — and this fall, the community is coming together to fight back. With fanlike fins, bold red-andwhite stripes and venomous spines, lionfish are striking underwater. But beneath that beauty is an invasive predator capable of disrupting the delicate balance of Florida’s marine ecosystems. This September, Pensacola will turn its attention to that problem, and to one of the most hands-on ways to fight it. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) Reef Rangers will host the inaugural FWC Pensacola Lionfish Invitational and Festival Sept. 25–27 at Plaza de Luna on Palafox Pier, bringing divers, coastal conservation advocates, local businesses, vendors and the public together around a common goal: removing invasive lionfish from Gulf waters. The tournament will run from first light until last light on tournament days, with teams able to launch from any legal waters where lionfish harvesting is permitted. The public festival will be held Saturday, Sept. 26, from 10 am to 6 pm, and Sunday, Sept. 27, from 10 am to 5 pm. For Tony Hart, FWC’s Lionfish Program Coordinator in the Division of Marine Fisheries Management and tournament director, bringing the competition back to Pensacola is about much more than a fish count. “As the Tournament Director, I am excited to help bring removal efforts back to the Pensacola area,” Hart said. “My goal is to make it a fun and successful event, while educating the public about the importance of getting involved and making a difference in the fight against lionfish invasion.” The story of the lionfish invasion is one of those environmental stories that begins with an almost deceptively simple problem: a fish that does not belong here. Lionfish are native to the IndoPacific, not the Gulf of Mexico. But over the past several decades, they have established themselves throughout the waters of the Southeast, including the Gulf, where they have found an abundance of prey and relatively few natural predators. The problem is not simply that lionfish are newcomers. It is how

Photos courtesy of FWC

effectively they have adapted to their new environment. “Lionfish are extremely detrimental to Florida’s reefs and marine ecosystems,” Hart said. “With no natural predators, rapid reproduction rates, and large stomachs, they can consume significant amounts of marine life.” Lionfish can prey on more than 100 species of fish, competing with native species for food and habitat. Their venomous spines also offer an effective defense against potential predators, and they reproduce at a remarkable pace. “A healthy female lionfish in warm waters can spawn every 2-4 days, releasing 15,000-30,000 eggs each time,” Hart explained. “When you realize how often that happens, it really puts the scale of the problem into perspective.” That reproductive capacity helps explain why simply removing a few lionfish is not enough to eliminate the invasion. Instead, biologists and conservationists focus on sustained, targeted removal, particularly in areas where divers can repeatedly harvest lionfish. For years, organized tournaments have provided one of the most visible ways to encourage that work. Divers compete to remove as many lionfish as possible, turning conservation into a competition while putting thousands of invasive fish on the dock rather than on the reef. “While lionfish remain a serious threat, tournaments like this make a measurable difference by removing large numbers of invasive fish and raising awareness about the importance of continued control efforts,” Hart said. That is part of the reason FWC wanted to bring a tournament back to Pensacola. For several years, Gulf Coast Lionfish Tournaments operated the Pensacola Lionfish Festival before recently ending its tenure. Rather than let the local tradition disappear, FWC stepped in to continue the removal effort and keep the community engaged. “It was important to keep a tournament in the Pensacola area, ensuring the continuity of this tournament promotes removal efforts of this invasive species and brings the community together,” Hart said. The new festival is built around that same idea of community. Pensacola’s connection to the Gulf runs deep,

woven into the area’s fishing, diving, boating, seafood and tourism industries. The tournament builds on that connection while giving it a conservation-focused mission. The competitive portion of the weekend is designed for divers, but visitors do not have to own a dive tank, or even know the difference between a lionfish and a red snapper, to participate in the larger celebration. Teams can begin their hunts from any legal waters where lionfish harvest is allowed, with the tournament operating from first light until last light on the designated tournament days. Standard entry is $100, with a discounted $75 entry available for participants who actively submit fish in the 2026 Lionfish Challenge. Around the competition, Plaza de Luna and Palafox Pier will become a waterfront gathering place for the community. Vendors, educational activities, waterfront entertainment and family-friendly programming will give visitors a chance to learn about lionfish and the broader work being done to protect Florida’s marine resources. The festival will also feature a variety of tasty foods. Local community chefs will host cooking demonstrations and showcase lionfish as a versatile Gulf seafood option, with tastings giving festivalgoers an opportunity to decide for themselves whether this invasive predator belongs on the dinner plate. For Hart, encouraging people to eat lionfish is not just about finding another fish to put on a menu. It is another way to create demand for an invasive species that conservationists want removed from the water. “Encouraging people to eat lionfish helps create a demand for this invasive species and supports the effort to remove lionfish from our waters,” Hart said. There is, however, one important distinction for anyone handling lionfish: They are venomous, not poisonous. “One of the biggest misconceptions is that lionfish are poisonous and cannot be eaten,” Hart said. “In reality, lionfish are venomous, not poisonous. The venom is found only in their spines. Once the spines are safely removed, lionfish are completely edible and are a fantastic food source.” The meat itself is mild, white and flaky, making lionfish a surprisingly approachable seafood choice.

FEMA ANNOUNCES $317 MILLION FOR FLORIDA RECOVERY Today, FEMA announced the approval of $317 million in post-disaster funding for Public Assistance and Hazard Mitigation Grant Program projects in Florida. These programs empower states and local communities to recover from disasters, to rebuild more resilient, safer communities and to protect infrastructure from future events. FEMA is awarding nearly $167 million for projects in the state of Florida that will prevent, eliminate or reduce future disasterrelated damage. This money is being distributed through FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. Through this program, state, local or territorial governments and tribal nations take proactive mitigation measures such as acquiring hazard-prone homes and businesses, adopting and enforcing building codes and standards, protecting against floods through elevations and drainage improvement projects, building safe rooms and upgrading utilities and infrastructure. Examples of projects reimbursed through Hazard Mitigation Grant Program funding approved today include: • More than $73 million to Florida for costeffective residential mitigation projects statewide, including elevating homes, property acquisitions, demolitions and reconstruction of eligible homes. • Nearly $53 million to for St. Vincent's Medical Center Riverside to strengthen the roof, walls and other parts of the building against hurricane-force winds and flooding in Jacksonville. • More than $11 million to protect wastewater infrastructure by providing backup power and improvements that reduce risks from flooding and high winds including the cities of Tampa and Lakeland. • More than $6 million to provide generators and emergency power systems, structural and infrastructure protective measures and wind protection to fire stations including the cities of St. Petersburg, North Port and Tampa. FEMA coordinates directly with the state on all hazard mitigation projects. This aligns

with FEMA’s principles of ensuring that disaster recovery and mitigation is state-led and federally supported. The funding approved today also includes nearly $150 million under FEMA’s Public Assistance program awarded across Florida. Examples of projects reimbursed through Public Assistance funding approved today include: • More than $5 million to Collier County for emergency pumping and temporary power to maintain wastewater operations. • Nearly $4 million to Cape Coral for citywide debris removal including waterway canals. • Nearly $3.5 million to Lee County to repair hurricane-damaged parks and recreational facilities, such as Lakes Regional Park and Royal Palm Park, and repairs to buildings and equipment at county parks. • Nearly $3.5 million to JEA (formerly Jacksonville Electric Authority) for repairs to storm-damaged electrical transmission and distribution system to restore reliable power to the community. • Nearly $3 million to Flagler County for construction of emergency berm using sand to protect improved property from flooding and storm damage. • More than $2.5 million to Levy County for debris removal, including the removal of vegetative, construction and demolition debris from public roads and rights of way. • More than $1.3 million to Charlotte County for repairs to Bayshore Live Oak Park, including storm-damaged fishing piers, walkways, seawalls and other recreational facilities. These projects are the latest examples of billions of dollars in disaster recovery provided by FEMA to support state and local communities as they work to rebuild from natural disasters. FEMA continues its renewed commitment to help communities recover from disasters like hurricanes, severe storms, tornadoes and wildfires while making them more resilient to future disasters.

ICE FLYERS NAME CHRIS FERAZZOLI ASSISTANT COACH The Pensacola Ice Flyers are proud to announce the addition of Chris Ferazzoli as assistant coach. A former forward who appeared in 181 professional games, Ferazzoli brings extensive playing, coaching and player-development experience to Pensacola. Over the past 15 years, he has worked with elite youth athletes and professional players from the Tampa Bay Lightning organization and teams across Sweden, Finland, Russia, Austria and Switzerland. “We welcome Chris to the Ice Flyers as our new assistant coach,” Head Coach Jeremy Gates said. “Chris brings a tremendous amount of experience to our organization, including a successful professional career and years of developing players at high levels. His experience coaching in the Tampa area, working with elite players, as well as his knowledge of the SPHL and other professional leagues, will be a great asset to our staff. Chris is someone who understands what it takes to develop players who can apply adaptable skills to our style of play. I’m looking forward to working alongside him and believe he will be a great addition to the Ice Flyers.” “I have known Jeremy Gates for quite some time, so when I learned there might be an opportunity in Pensacola, I reached out immediately,” Ferazzoli said. “This organization’s longevity speaks to its ownership and the tremendous support it receives from the community. Having played in Mississippi, I remember the atmosphere when we came to Pensacola. I can’t wait to feel that energy from behind the bench.” Ferazzoli will work closely with Gates to support the team’s philosophy, structure and daily development. His coaching approach centers on relationships, trust and clear communication. “I want to be a players’ coach,” Ferazzoli said. “Sometimes in coaching, you can forget what it was like to be in their position. I want to invest in our players, build trust and develop relationships that extend beyond hockey. When players know where they stand, what they are doing well and how they can improve, that creates the foundation for success.”

His path through professional hockey helped shape that philosophy. After stepping away from the game for four years following college, Ferazzoli returned to competition and ultimately earned an opportunity with the ECHL’s Cincinnati Cyclones. There, he saw firsthand the preparation, recovery habits and attention to detail required to succeed as a professional. That experience reinforced the importance of patience and allowing players to grow through mistakes, an approach Ferazzoli has carried into his coaching career. “The details in this game are small, but they are imperative,” he said. “I want our players to understand what they are doing well, what needs to improve and, most importantly, how to fix it. The passion and energy will be there every day, along with constant feedback designed to bring out the best in each player.” As a former forward, Ferazzoli emphasizes habits such as stopping and starting, keeping sticks on the ice and attacking open space with and without the puck. His standards extend beyond talent, with work ethic, competitiveness, humility and selflessness forming the foundation of what he values in a player. “From day one, there will be standards and non-negotiables,” Ferazzoli said. “If a player brings his best every day, our staff will make sure he is prepared and receives the tactical and technical details he needs to succeed.” For Ferazzoli, joining the Ice Flyers represents both the beginning of his professional coaching career and an opportunity to contribute to a city whose passion for hockey left a lasting impression on him. “I’m excited to be on the bench at this level and to help bring a championship home,” he said. “I love this game, and there will be no shortage of passion. I feel blessed to do this every day, and this organization will get every ounce of my heart and soul as a coach.” Away from the rink, Ferazzoli enjoys golf, tennis, basketball and pickleball. He and his wife, Janibel, also enjoy traveling and discovering new restaurants, but he treasures time with their daughters, Chiara and Carina, most of all.

NATIONAL PARK SERVICE EXPANDS PERSONAL WATERCRAFT ACCESS AT GULF ISLANDS NATIONAL SEASHORE The National Park Service today announced a final rule that expands recreational opportunities for personal watercraft (jet-ski) users at Gulf Islands National Seashore by reducing flat-wake zones in Mississippi and Florida while maintaining important protections for visitor safety and submerged vegetation. The rule also codifies two existing personal watercraft closure areas to reflect current conditions at the Seashore. In Mississippi, the flat-wake zone has been reduced from one-half mile to 300 yards from shore. In Florida, it has been reduced from 300 yards to 150 yards. Outside those zones, personal watercraft may operate at higher speeds where otherwise allowed. "This update reflects our commitment to providing high-quality recreational opportunities while continuing to protect the unique natural and cultural resources at Gulf Islands

National Seashore," said Rick Clark, superintendent of Gulf Islands National Seashore. "These changes allow visitors to enjoy the seashore safely while helping us protect the resources that make this place so special." The changes are based on research showing that reducing the flat-wake zones will continue to protect sensitive underwater habitats, including seagrass, while allowing personal watercraft users to operate at higher speeds closer to shore. The rule also formally incorporates existing closures around West Petit Bois Island and the Fort Pickens ferry pier into park regulations to reflect current conditions. The updated rule supports Executive Order 14314, Making America Beautiful Again by Improving Our National Parks, which directs federal land management agencies to expand recreational access while continuing to protect public lands and resources.

GOV. DESANTIS AWARDS $525K IN GRANT FUNDING FOR WHITING AVIATION PARK PROJECTS Santa Rosa County has been awarded a combined $525,000 through two state grant programs to support economic development and protect the region’s military installations. The awards were announced by Governor Ron DeSantis as part of nearly $23 million in statewide investments aimed at strengthening Florida’s defense workforce, military communities and defense industrial base. Santa Rosa County will receive $250,000 via the Defense Reinvestment Grant and $275,000 from the Florida Defense Support Commission Grant. "The grant funds will be used to design and prepare for further expansion of the county's Whiting Aviation Park to make room for additional companies and provide for more highpaying jobs and opportunities for our citizens," said Colten Wright, Board of County Commissioners Chairman. "Today's announcement displays the strong relationships we've built and our combined commitment to our military and our community." The grant will advance Phase II of Whiting Aviation Park by funding data collection, engineering analysis and design necessary to extend Don Salter Boulevard into the Phase II development area. The project will

support continued development of the aviation-focused business park and strengthen infrastructure supporting the region’s defense industry. It funds a land and easement acquisition program designed to protect Naval Air Station Whiting Field and its Navy Outlying Fields from incompatible development. The program will help preserve the military mission and long-term viability of the installations and surrounding areas. “These grants are an important investment in Santa Rosa County’s future,” said Shannon Ogletree, Santa Rosa County Economic Development Director. “Our strong aviation presence and connection to Naval Air Station Whiting Field continue to raise Santa Rosa County’s profile as a desirable place for aviation and defense-related companies to invest and grow. Expanding Whiting Aviation Park will help us build on that momentum, attract new businesses, create high-quality jobs and strengthen the infrastructure needed to support continued economic growth.” Together, the two grants represent a $525,000 investment in Santa Rosa County’s economic development, infrastructure and military mission.

Hosted this year by Navy Recruiting Command, the conference brought together recruiting commanders, senior enlisted leaders and staff from across the military services with representatives from the Office of the Secretary of War, Accession Policy, to discuss the current recruiting environment, share service-level updates and identify opportunities for joint process and policy improvements. “Every service has its own mission, culture and recruiting requirements, but we are all competing for talent in the same dynamic environment and ultimately working toward the same objective—ensuring our nation has the people it needs to defend itself,” said Rear Adm. Forrest Young, Commander, Navy Recruiting Command. “This conference gives us an important opportunity to learn from one another, identify common challenges and work together on solutions that strengthen recruiting across the Joint Force.” The Joint Recruiting Commanders’ Conference is convened annually by OSW Accession Policy, with hosting responsibilities rotating among the military services. The forum provides senior recruiting leaders an opportunity to examine recruiting trends and chal-

lenges at the national level while sharing successful approaches and identifying issues that may benefit from coordinated action. “Recruiting is fundamentally about people, and each of us benefits when we find better ways to connect qualified Americans with opportunities to serve,” Young said. “We may wear different uniforms, but sharing what works and addressing common barriers together ultimately makes all of our services stronger.” In addition to formal conference sessions at NAS Pensacola’s Mustin Beach Club, attendees had an opportunity to observe a U.S. Navy Blue Angels practice demonstration. Participants were also offered tours of the National Naval Aviation Museum and Navy Recruiting Orientation Unit, where Navy recruiters receive the foundational training necessary to begin recruiting duty. The annual conference comes as the military services continue adapting recruiting strategies, processes and technologies to compete for talent and meet the personnel requirements of the Joint Force. Navy Recruiting Command consists of 26 Navy Talent Acquisition Groups, two Navy Recruiting Regions, five Reserve Talent Acquisition Groups, Navy Recruiting Reserve Command and more than 5,000 Sailors, civilians and contractors serving across the United States and around the world. The command is responsible for recruiting highly qualified men and women who will serve as the next generation of America's Navy.

CITY OF PENSACOLA AND ESCAMBIA COUNTY OBSERVE FLORIDA PREPAREDNESS MONTH 2026 Florida Preparedness Month kicks off today, Sept. 1. The City of Pensacola and Escambia County encourage residents to remain prepared before, during and after a storm by being “One Week Ready” with at least seven days' worth of supplies following a major hurricane. The State of Florida recognizes September as Florida Preparedness Month in conjunction with FEMA's National Preparedness Month “Ready” Campaign. The peak of the Atlantic hurricane season falls on Wednesday, Sept. 10, with most activity occurring between mid-August and midOctober. Florida Preparedness Month serves as a reminder for Floridians to review disaster plans and prepare for the remainder of hurricane season. Escambia County residents and visitors are encouraged to monitor weather alerts, keep a stocked disaster supply kit and develop a disaster preparedness plan. “With peak hurricane season approaching, we want to encourage residents to have a hurricane plan,” Escambia County Emergency Manager and Deputy Public Safety Director Travis Tompkins said. “If you experienced Hurricane Ivan or Hurricane Sally, then you know firsthand how devastating a hurricane can be to our community. Escambia County has seen a significant increase in population over the last several years, and many of our new residents have never experienced a hurricane. They may not know what to expect or how quickly conditions can change. Meet your new neighbor or talk with a new member of your church, community group, or a new coworker. Ask them if they have a hurricane plan. Encourage them to have enough food, water, and other essential supplies for everyone in their household for at least seven days. Keep your vehicle’s gas tank at least half full and rechargeable batteries and power banks charged and ready. We need everyone’s help getting the preparedness message out. Know your zone, know your home, and know your plan.” Follow these steps to make sure you and your family are prepared this hurricane season: 1. Know Your Zone. Familiarize yourself with evacuation zones and routes. Knowing your evacuation zone is one of the most important hurricane preparation steps you can take. It is very important that you look up your evacuation zone each year to find out if and when you should evacuate, even if you have looked

it up in the past, as zones can change. Most importantly, don’t rely on previous storm experience. 2. Know Your Home. Is your home prepared for a hurricane? If you need to evacuate, pack an emergency supply kit. It should contain seven days of clothes, nonperishable food, pet food, water and a batteryoperated radio and flashlight with extra batteries. Also include a first-aid kit with items such as gloves, adhesive bandages and prescription medications. Please remember to be "One Week Ready." Everyone should be equipped to provide for themselves, their families and their pets for at least seven days following a major hurricane. 3. Know Your Plan. Plan how you will assemble your family and loved ones, and anticipate where you will go for different situations. Get together with your family and agree on the best ways to contact one another in an emergency. Inform out-oftown family and friends of your emergency plans and stay in contact. Plan your evacuation route and destination before an evacuation order is issued. Be sure to make preparations for pets and family members who may need special accommodations, such as a wheelchair ramp, oxygen tank or specific medications. 4. Stay Informed. Know where to go for trusted sources of information during a hurricane event. Sign up for alerts from Escambia County Emergency Management to receive notifications, including evacuation orders, directly to your phone and email. Monitor local news for hurricane watches and warnings in your area and follow the directions of local officials. You can also sign up for alerts from the City of Pensacola. Make sure you have a battery-operated or hand-crank radio available should the power go out. Review and sign up for the different types of information/notifications available directly from Escambia County on the Emergency Management website. Additional online safety resources: • For the latest road closures and traffic updates, travelers can access Florida's 511 service. • Download the Escambia County Disaster Guide.

NAVAL AIR TRAINING COMMAND IMPLEMENTS 3D DIGITAL EAR-SCANNING FLEETWIDE More than 1,000 Chief of Naval Air Training (CNATRA) personnel are one step closer to receiving custom hearing protection thanks to the coordinated efforts of CNATRA and Naval Air Training Command’s (NATRACOM) Aerospace Medical Safety Officers (AMSO). Working alongside Commander, Naval Air Forces (CNAF) and the Aircrew Systems Program Office (PMA-202), CNATRA AMSOs organized large-scale ear-scanning events during July and August in Corpus Christi, Texas, Kingsville, Texas and Pensacola, Fla. that will provide Student Naval Aviators (SNA), Instructor Pilots (IP) and aircrew assigned to NATRACOM with custom communication earplugs designed to improve hearing protection and in-flight communications. The initiative marks the first time CNATRA has participated in a mass digital ear-scanning effort, following successful proof-of-concept events conducted at Naval Test Wing Atlantic. For decades, Naval Aviation has used custom-fitted hearing protection to help mitigate the effects of hazardous aircraft noise. Traditionally, creating custom earpieces required placing silicone material into an aircrew member’s ear canal to form a physical impression. The impression was then mailed to a manufacturer, where it was used to create a cast and ultimately the custom earpiece. The process introduced opportunities for error, including physical impressions becoming distorted during shipping, which could result in uncomfortable or poorly fitting hearing protection. Digital scanning removes the need for a physical ear impression by creating an electronic three-dimensional model of an individual's ear that can be sent directly to the manufacturer. This past month, nearly 500 personnel assigned to Training Air Wing (TW) 2 and Training Air Wing (TW) 4 volunteered to participate in the three-dimensional digital ear scanning. Training Wing (TW) 5 and Training Wing (TW) 6 are expected to have over 700 volunteers participate during August. The resulting digital models are used to manufacture communication earpieces custom-fitted to each aircrew member’s unique ear anatomy. Lt. Destiny Attewell, TW-4 AMSO, emphasized the importance of providing naval aviation’s newest aviators with hearing protection early in their careers. “Every flight hour exposes our aviators to hazardous noise levels, making hearing conservation a critical part of readiness,” said Attewell. “Seeing nearly 500 aviators from Training Wing 2 and Training Wing 4 receive custom-fit hearing protection through CNAF priority and 3D scanning innovation demonstrates our commitment to protecting the

warfighter today while preserving their hearing for the future.” Because TW- 2, 4, 5 and 6 are located in areas with larger concentrations of naval aviation personnel, PMA-202 funded the massscanning events for those wings. At Training Air Wing (TW) 1, located at Naval Air Station Meridian, Mississippi, Lt. Amos Meyers, TW-1 AMSO, has been conducting digital ear scans for aircrew at the wing himself. “Naval Air Station Meridian is a relative island in terms of Navy locations,” said Lt. Amos Meyers, TW-1 AMSO. “Having the ability and equipment to scan in-house incurred an up-front cost, but long-term has developed a sustainable process to get custom hearing protection into the hands, or ears, of our aircrew early in their careers. Hearing is one of those senses that doesn’t recover once damaged so early intervention is key.” Earlier this year, all NATRACOM AMSOs completed specialized training on the digital scanning equipment and returned to their respective training wings with certified scanning devices and the ability to conduct the scans themselves. While the mass-scanning events accelerated the initial rollout, the AMSOs will continue sustaining the program by scanning newly reporting aircrew as they arrive at their commands. The effort is being carried out across CNATRA by Lt. Amos Meyers at TW-1; Lt. Natalia Karvelis at TW-2; Lt. Destiny Attewell at TW-4; Lt. Andy Cosgrove at TW-5; and Lt. Will McMillen at TW-6. Cmdr. Amanda Lippert, CNATRA aerospace medical safety officer, who helped coordinate the initiative between CNAF, PMA-202 and NATRACOM’s training wing AMSOs, stressed the critical role the AMSO played in the execution of the program. “We are especially thankful for our Aerospace Medical Safety Officers at each of our training wings,” said Lippert. “Their hard work to facilitate these mass scan events ensured that over 1,000 personnel assigned to CNATRA had their ears scanned and received custom earpieces to protect their hearing and better facilitate communications while flying. I am immensely proud of their initiative.” Headquartered at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, Texas, the Chief of Naval Air Training (CNATRA) oversees five training air wings and 17 training squadrons across Florida, Mississippi and Texas. These squadrons conduct primary, intermediate and advanced flight training for student naval aviators, naval flight officers and air vehicle pilots. CNATRA remains steadfast in its mission to train, mentor and deliver the highest quality naval aviators prepared to win in competition, crisis and conflict.

BAYVIEW PARK TENNIS COURTS SCHEDULED FOR RESURFACING The City of Pensacola Parks and Recreation Department has scheduled resurfacing work for the tennis courts at Bayview Park beginning the week of Sept. 7, weather permitting. To maintain access for players during the project, the six tennis courts will be resurfaced in phases. Three courts will remain open and available for use while work is completed on the other three. Once the first set of courts is complete, work will transition to the remaining courts. The resurfacing project is expected to take approximately 10 days to complete,

weather permitting. Court availability may vary throughout the project, and visitors are asked to avoid areas closed for construction. This project is part of the City of Pensacola’s Direction ’25 Parks Revitalization Project and is funded by Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) dollars. Direction ’25 continues the City’s investment in improving parks, recreational facilities and public spaces throughout Pensacola. The City appreciates the public’s patience as these improvements are completed and looks forward to providing an improved playing surface for the Pensacola tennis community.

“Our resource centers are more than places for recreation; they are places where people come to connect with their community,” said Parks and Recreation Director Tonya Byrd. “With so many veterans and military families calling Pensacola home, we want our staff to have the knowledge and resources to recognize when someone may need support and help connect them with the right resources. The Fire Watch training gives us another tool to better serve the people who walk through our doors every day.” For Pensacola's veteran community, the program brings another layer of awareness and support into familiar, accessible neighborhood spaces. Resource centers serve residents of all ages through recreation programs, community events and other services throughout the year. By training staff and utilizing The Fire Watch as an ongoing resource, Pensacola Parks and Recreation is helping ensure employees are better prepared to recognize when a veteran may need support and help connect them with available services. Pensacola's strong ties to the military and veteran community make this initiative especially meaningful for Pensacola. Incorporating The Fire Watch's training and resources into City resource centers strengthens the role these facilities play beyond recreation, helping them serve as welcoming, informed and connected spaces for the communities around them.

UWF MARKETING STUDENTS HELP LOCAL WILDLIFE SANCTUARY University of West Florida marketing students put classroom knowledge into practice by conducting professional-level research for The Wildlife Sanctuary of Northwest Florida, helping the organization evaluate community support for a proposed major capital campaign to relocate its facility out of a chronic flood zone. Undergraduate students in a Spring 2026 Marketing Research class taught by Dr. James Mead, chair of the Department of Commerce and professor of marketing, designed and conducted a capital campaign feasibility study for The Wildlife Sanctuary. Working with realworld survey data, the students examined community awareness and mission alignment, donor profiles, willingness to give, responses to potential campaign messages and which features of a proposed new facility most motivate potential donors. The students designed and fielded a Qualtrics survey to residents and supporters across Escambia and Santa Rosa counties, collecting data through multiple methods. They then used statistical analysis, including regression analysis and donor segmentation, to translate the findings into strategic recommendations for The Wildlife Sanctuary. The research found that the community has the capacity to support The Wildlife Sanctuary’s capital campaign, particularly when the campaign strategically targets donors rather than relying primarily on broad-based giving. Prior supporters were significantly more likely to give and to give at higher levels than individuals who were newly introduced to the organization. Students also found that emotional, animalcentered storytelling was more effective than transactional appeals. Among the messages tested were “Amelia’s Story,” – Amelia is a bald eagle who was rescued by volunteers during a major flood with a gunshot wound and now has a forever home at the sanctuary – “A Center for You” and “Buy 1 Square Foot of Dry Ground.” The research further identified the donor segments most likely to contribute and the factors that statistically predict giving. Based on their findings, students recommended that The Wildlife Sanctuary focus its campaign on prior donors while using social media and other outreach to engage the broader community. They also recommended leading with emotional, story-driven messaging centered on individual animals and the need to move the Sanctuary out of a flood zone, as well as prioritizing facility features that most strongly motivated highervalue donors, including a wildlife hospital. The Wildlife Sanctuary has since launched its capital campaign and applied for an addi-

tional grant to support relocation to a new, purpose-built 10-acre campus. "This is what we want a business education to look like. Our students took on a real client with a real decision to make, and the Wildlife Sanctuary walked away with research it could actually use. That's a win for the students and genuine impact for the community," Mead said. "I'm proud of this class. These were undergraduates producing professionalgrade research. Such work would cost $50K+ if performed by a marketing research firm." For Ashley Alexander, one of the UWF students who worked on the project, the experience has continued beyond the classroom. Alexander now serves as a long-term intern with The Wildlife Sanctuary, where she is applying the research findings through social media outreach, donor engagement and grant writing. “Conducting research through Dr. Mead’s Marketing Analytics course provided strengths I needed to use the sanctuary’s Customer Relationship Management System,” Alexander said. “Researching this donor base in the classroom gave insight to the target audience I am now marketing towards and communicating with at the Wildlife Sanctuary. These are skills that I will take with me for my future career and have been made possible through the UWF Lewis Bear Jr. College of Business.” The research is also strengthening The Wildlife Sanctuary’s efforts to secure outside grant funding. The study demonstrates to funding agencies that the community both supports the organization's mission and can self-fund much of its own needs, reflecting the reputation and trust the Sanctuary has earned locally. That evidence of community backing positions grant funding not as a lifeline, but to take an already successful organization to the next level. “The feasibility study has already been used in meetings when discussing relocation with various partners to show that we are desired and supported by the community from a financial perspective,” said Leah Schultz, development coordinator at The Wildlife Sanctuary of Northwest Florida. “Proving that we as an organization have a mission that our community believes in will be highly important moving forward." The project reflects the Lewis Bear Jr. College of Business’ commitment to experiential learning that connects students with organizations and businesses throughout Northwest Florida. By working with a live client, students gained hands-on experience with research methods and strategic decisionmaking while producing work with tangible value for a community organization.
