BARKTOBERFEST HAS

GONE TO THE DOGS

By Mary Donovan McClellan

M

ark your calendars for October 18, and get ready for a day of furry fun at Seville Square and Fountain Park at the 24th Annual Barktoberfest benefiting the Pensacola Humane Society (PHS). Barktoberfest will take place from 10 am to 4 pm, bringing together dogs, dog lovers and animal advocates for a tail-wagging celebration that has become a beloved Gulf Coast tradition. Best of all, there is no cost to attend this annual familyfriendly event, making it easy for everyone to join in the fun. Barktoberfest isn’t just a party, it's a lifeline for abandoned and neglected animals. Every dollar raised through this event helps provide critical medical care, safe shelter, and the promise of brighter futures for pets in need. The celebration blends fun, community spirit, and compassion, all the while making it a day with a purpose that reaches far beyond the park. This year’s event is proudly presented by the Pensacola Ice Flyers, returning for their third consecutive year as the event’s title sponsor. Known for giving back to the community both on and off the ice, the Ice Flyers have shown incredible commitment to helping animals in need. They join a roster of generous partners including Fishbein Orthodontics, Taylor, Warren, Weidner, Hancock & Barnes, Animal Hospital of Pensacola, Varona Paradies,

Zarzaur Law, Pensacola Lighthouse Museum, Cat Country, Xtreme Logistics Gulf Coast, Ballinger Publishing, Wolfgang and many more whose sponsorships make this event possible year-after-year. What to Expect at Barktoberfest Get ready for a day filled with activities designed to entertain animal lovers of all ages. Throughout the day, guests can enjoy lively contests, exciting races, children’s games and pet adoption opportunities. Barktoberfest is known for its friendly competitions. Competitors can show off their furry companions and vie for Best Owner and Dog Lookalike, Best Trick and the wildly entertaining Best Dog Costume. Children will find plenty to enjoy in the Bow Wow Backyard, a dedicated area filled with games, pup-themed activities and interactive demonstrations that are designed to entertain and educate animal lovers young and old. Visitors can explore booths hosted by local vendors, animal welfare organizations and community partners. These booths will feature everything from pet supplies and specialty treats to information on veterinary services, training and adoption opportunities. Whether you’re competing in a contest, browsing the vendor booths or simply soaking up the atmosphere, Barktoberfest promises a day full of joy, laughter and wagging tails. It’s the kind of event that brings people together, cele-

brates the human-animal bond and raises critical funds for animals who need it most. About Pensacola Humane Society For over 80 years, the Pensacola Humane Society has been a beacon of hope for animals along Florida’s Gulf Coast. Founded in 1943, PHS began with a small group of passionate volunteers determined to make a difference for abandoned and neglected animals. Today, it has grown into a thriving nonprofit shelter dedicated to rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming efforts that transform lives both for animals and the people who love them. PHS works closely with Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties Animal Shelters and animal welfare partners in Okaloosa and Walton counties. Together, these organizations form a united front to promote adoption, reduce overpopulation and improve animal welfare across the region. The partnerships allow resources, knowledge and support to be shared, ensuring that every animal receives the best possible chance at a happy, healthy life. Adoption efforts are at the heart of PHS’s mission. In 2024, the shelter completed 826 adoptions, giving cats and dogs across the Gulf Coast a chance at loving forever homes. With 2025 already off to a strong start, the shelter expects to surpass that number this year, continuing its proud tradition of successful placements. One of PHS’s major commitments is to its spay and neuter

procedures, a number that has exceeded 1,500 since May 2024. Among those surgeries are those provided for Everett Animal Welfare Tag-Neuter-Return Program which humanely manages community cat populations. This program alone has made a significant impact on controlling the number of freeroaming cats in the area, improving the health of the animals while preventing future suffering. The shelter maintains its No-Kill Shelter status with a 2024 save rate of 97.6 percent, well above the 90 percent threshold required for this designation. This achievement reflects the dedication of staff, volunteers and supporters who work tirelessly to ensure every adoptable animal has the opportunity for a second chance. The Pet Pantry, offered twice monthly, distributed more than 10,000 pounds of food and supplies in 2024 alone, providing essential support to families facing financial hardship so they can continue caring for their beloved pets. Volunteers remain the heart of PHS. In 2024, they donated 8,850 hours of service. Their dedication ensures that every animal in PHS’s care receives love, attention, and enrichment while waiting for a forever home. The shelter also invests in its staff through skills and professional development opportunities. This training equips the team with the latest best practices in animal care, adoption programs and commu-

nity outreach, helping PHS remain a leader in animal welfare. Ways to Get Involved Supporting the Pensacola Humane Society comes in many forms. Adopting a pet opens your home and heart to an animal in need, giving them the chance for a loving forever family. Fostering provides temporary care for animals while freeing up space in the shelter for others in crisis. PHS supplies all the necessities for fosters — food, bedding and veterinary care — so volunteers can focus on providing love and socialization. Volunteering offers hands-on ways to help by walking dogs, cleaning kennels, assisting with events or distributing pet pantry supplies. Donations of money, food and supplies also make an immediate impact, funding medical treatments, outreach programs and shelter needs that save lives every day. The PHS Pet Pantry, held twice each month, remains one of the most valued outreach programs, ensuring that families facing tough times can still care for the pets they love. Be part of the community that can make a difference. Join us at Barktoberfest on October 18 from 10 am to 4 pm to celebrate the pethuman bond, enjoy a day of fun and support a brighter future for pets in need. JAZZ FOR JUSTICE 2025: MUSIC WITH MEANING IN DOWNTOWN PENSACOLA, FEATURING NEW ORLEANS’ PRESERVATION HALL BRASS BAND Get ready for another unforgettable celebration where music and community come together. Legal Services of North Florida (LSNF) is proud to host Jazz for Justice once more on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2025, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Museum Plaza, 120 Church St., in the heart of Downtown Pensacola. Admission is free. Made possible by the Pensacola Foo Foo Festival, Jazz for Justice brings the best of New Orleans and Pensacola jazz to the stage. Attendees will experience worldclass jazz performances, delicious food from local restaurants and food trucks, engaging vendors, and family-friendly activities, all while supporting free civil legal help for those most in need across North Florida. A Showcase of Brass and Jazz This year’s Jazz for Justice lineup is tuned to perfection, with an afternoon that swings from smooth grooves to high-energy brass explosions. Kicking things off is a hometown favorite, Whiskey and Water (Pensacola), whose sound flows as effortlessly as their name. With silky jazz vocals poured over Louisiana blues, a splash of reggae, and a kick of Southern rock guitar, they strike the perfect chord to get the crowd swaying. Keeping the music alive, Bon Bon Vivant (New Orleans) turns up the tempo with a performance that’s equal parts spectacle and soul. Blending indie grit, Americana heart, and that unmistakable Crescent City flair, frontwoman Abigail Cosio and saxophonist Jeremy Kelley craft songs that dance between revelry and reflection, proof that their music is as much storytelling as it is rhythm. Bringing it all home with a crescendo, the legendary Preservation Hall Brass Band (New Orleans) takes the stage as the event’s headlining act. This all-star brass ensemble, led by trumpeter Mark Braud, carries the torch of New Orleans’ musical heritage. From timeless parade anthems to spirituals

and classic jazz standards, their sound is the heartbeat of the Big Easy, and it’s guaranteed to bring the crowd to its feet. Family-Friendly Fun Jazz for Justice offers more than music; it’s a true community event. Families can enjoy interactive science activities from the Pensacola MESS Hall, games, and more. Bring kids, grandparents, for an afternoon that feels like a neighborhood block party with worldclass music. Spread out a blanket, set up lawn chairs, and let the little ones dance in the grass while relaxing under the autumn sky. Jazz for Justice makes it easy to enjoy good food, great music, and quality time together in the heart of Downtown Pensacola. Legal Services of North Florida Jazz for Justice is not just about great music; it’s about making a difference. Legal Services of North Florida (LSNF) provides free civil legal help to low-income individuals and families across 16 counties, handling nearly 8,000 cases each year that impact more than 20,000 lives. Attendance and support ensure LSNF can provide civil legal aid to low-income individuals and families at no cost. With a commitment to justice and equity, LSNF strives to break down barriers and empower communities through legal advocacy and support. The annual Pensacola Foo Foo Festival event series is produced by Art, Culture, and Entertainment, Inc. (ACE), taking place Oct. 30, 2025, through Nov. 10, 2025. About Art, Culture, Entertainment, Inc. (ACE) ACE is a nonprofit organization that receives Federal, State of Florida, Escambia County, City of Pensacola, corporate, foundation, and personal funds. ACE disperses these funds through an equitable granting process to nonprofit arts, culture, and entertainment organizations throughout Escambia County, Fla., and promotes Escambia County as an arts and cultural destination through the annual Foo Foo Festival and other marketing efforts.

PENSACOLA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT EARNS A+ BOND RATINGS FROM THREE REPORTING AGENCIES Pensacola International Airport (PNS) has achieved A+ bond ratings with a Stable Outlook from three reporting rating agencies—Fitch Ratings, S&P Global Ratings, and Kroll Bond Rating Agency (KBRA)—a major milestone that underscores the airport’s strong financial management, prudent leadership, and continued growth trajectory. The accomplishment marks a dramatic transformation from just a decade ago, when Pensacola’s airport bonds were rated near the bottom among U.S. airports. Today, Pensacola International Airport stands among the most financially sound smallhub airports in the nation—an achievement reflecting both the airport’s fiscal discipline and the city’s economic strength. “This achievement is a true testament to our team’s financial stewardship and long-term planning,” said Matt Coughlin, Executive Airport Director at Pensacola International Airport. “Receiving A+ ratings across the board validates the strength of our airport and our city, and positions us to continue investing in the infrastructure that supports Pensacola’s growth and connectivity.” According to Fitch Ratings, Pensacola International Airport’s A+ rating reflects a “solid growth trend and relatively low volatility in enplanements, as well as by robust financial flexibility supported by a low debt burden, and a strong cash position.” S&P Global Ratings cited the airport’s “prudent

financial management practices” and “historical peaks in activity fueled by investment by the aerospace, health care, the U.S. military, and hospitality industry.” In its report, KBRA noted that the A+ rating reflects Pensacola International Airport’s “growing air trade area economy; balanced business, leisure, and military travel market which generated rapid growth in passenger activity over most of the last decade; sound operating performance, fueled by healthy nonairline revenue generation; and ample liquidity.” These ratings come as Pensacola International Airport continues to experience record passenger growth and embarks on a $130 million terminal expansion and modernization program that will increase capacity to 2.4 million enplanements and add five new gates. “Strong ratings like these are not just about the airport—they’re a reflection of the strength of our entire community,” said Mayor D.C. Reeves. “They affirm that Pensacola is a city on the rise, with an airport that’s well-positioned to meet the needs of our residents, businesses, and visitors for decades to come.” With A+ ratings from all three agencies, Pensacola International Airport is positioned for continued success as it prepares for its next decade of growth, ensuring that Pensacola remains one of the Gulf Coast’s premier destinations for business and leisure travel.

COX EMPLOYEES AWARD $50,000 TO LOCAL NONPROFITS

Cox Communications employees have awarded a total of $50,000 in grants to 10 local nonprofits, through Cox Charities Community Investment Grants. The program provides employee funded grants of up to $5,000 to support a special program benefiting residents in the area. Earlier this year, organizations were invited to submit applications for funding. This year’s recipients of the Cox Charities Community Investment Grants are: Autism Pensacola – Funding will support Kids for Camp, a six-week summer program serving 75 children and teens with autism in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. The program blends individualized instruction using ABA principles with enrichment activities to build communication, social and life skills. Grant dollars will fund certified staff, data-driven progress tracking, peer buddy inclusion, and caregiver respite. Emerald Coast Autism Center – The grant will support the purchase of Vibe smartboards for ECLC classrooms, enhancing academic and vocational instruction for students with autism. These tools will help bridge gaps in learning by supporting individualized goals in language, social skills and functional academics. Grant dollars will improve student engagement, track progress, and promote achievement throughout the 2025–26 school year, helping each learner reach their highest potential. Emerald Coast Science Center, Inc. – Grant funds will be used to support the development and delivery of 20 to 25 free Family Science Night events across Northwest Florida, reaching over 7,600 students and caregivers. Each event features 15 hands-on STEAM activity stations themed around Nocturnal Nature, promoting curiosity, learning, and family engagement. Gulf Coast Council, Scouting America – This Cox Charities grant will support STEAM education for 1,800 youth ages 5 to 18 in underserved Gulf Coast communities through STEM merit badges, mobile STEAM labs, monthly STEAM Saturdays and mentorship from local professionals. Grant dollars will expand access to hands-on learning, track badge completions and event attendance, and foster long-term interest in STEM careers. Gulf Coast Kid’s House – This grant will help support the creation of a therapeutic garden at Gulf Coast Kid’s House, offering a healing space for children and families affected by trauma. Designed in partnership with Green Procedures, the garden will promote emotional wellness, sensory regulation, and environmental education. Grant dollars will help build a calming, inclusive space that supports therapy services, staff well-being, and future outreach for child abuse prevention. Gulfarium CARE Foundation - Funding will support the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of at least 150 sea turtles along Florida’s Gulf Coast in 2025. Grant dollars will be used for veterinary equipment, tanks, climate control systems, emergency response supplies, & care materials. Additionally, funds will support STEAMbased youth education programs reaching over 5,000 students, promoting marine conservation and sustainability. Institute for Human and Machine Cognition - IHMC offers Science Saturdays and Summer Robotics Camp at both its Pensacola and Ocala locations. The goal of Science Saturdays is to spark an interest in science among children, at an early enough age to influence educational outcomes.

These events are fun and designed to complement science as taught schools. Science Saturdays create opportunities for hands-on participation and enjoyment— a hook, so to speak, that leads to increased enthusiasm for appreciating science topics in school. Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center – With this grant, the Center will host six inclusive STEAM workshops for up to 144 youth, including underserved and autistic participants, combining marine conservation education with ceramic art. Students will tour the Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center, meet a sea turtle ambassador, and create eco-friendly clay tokens and medallions. Grant dollars will promote environmental awareness, artistic expression, and sustainability, while replacing plastic scavenger hunt tokens and supporting nonprofit operations through medallion sales. S4P Synergy, Inc. - Funding will support a Back to School Bash serving 400 underserved individuals with free school physicals, supplies, clothing, food and family-friendly activities. The event will also offer cybersecurity training for parents and access to health and insurance resources. The Seaside School - The Dream Big STEAM Leaders Program is designed to expand STEM opportunities by doubling student participation in robotics, drones, and Weather STEM activities, while increasing enrollment among female and underrepresented students. The program will also integrate virtual reality and 3D printing to foster innovation and collaboration skills. In addition to STEM, the initiative will launch and grow a theatre program that offers daily instruction and after-school productions, helping students build communication, creativity, confidence and collaboration, while uncovering hidden strengths and talents. “We are incredibly grateful to Cox for supporting our Family Science Night program. This grant will allow the Emerald Coast Science Center to bring even more hands-on STEM learning opportunities directly into schools, reaching thousands of students and families across our region,” said Kate Fox, development coordinator of the Emerald Coast Science Center. “Family Science Night is unique in that it not only sparks curiosity in science, but also brings families together to learn, explore, and problem-solve side by side. With Cox’s support, we can continue breaking down barriers to access and help schools provide engaging, real-world experiences that inspire the next generation of innovators.” Cox Charities is a charitable giving initiative of Cox Communications fully funded by Cox employees and business partners. The funds raised are then invested annually as Cox Charities Community Investment Grants to organizations that align with our focus areas of youth innovation programs focused on science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM); conservation and sustainability initiatives; and equal opportunity. A total of $315,000 is being awarded to 63 grant recipients throughout Cox’s East Region. “Supporting our community isn’t just part of our job, it’s who we are at Cox. Whether it’s our employees giving money from their own pockets to fund these local nonprofit grants, or rolling up our sleeves to volunteer, our team shows up with heart and purpose,” said David Deliman, Cox Gulf Coast market vice president. “This community means a lot to us, and I’m incredibly proud of how our employees continue to make a real difference every day.” For more information visit the Cox Charities website.

KID’S SLOW RIDE RETURNS TO EAST HILL Join Bike Pensacola for the most popular bike ride in town--the Slow Ride. Each month we explore the quiet, scenic streets of Pensacola's many historic neighborhoods for a fun and leisurely ride among friends. For October we are joining with The Last Mile to host a Kids' Slow Ride followed by a Bike Safety Rodeo. Kids will ride (and parents can join them) a little less than a mile to a nearby East Hill park and back, escorted by motorcycle officers of the Pensacola Police Department. Free snacks will be provided for kids following the Ride. No registration is required and the Kids’ Slow Ride is free. After the Ride the Bike Safety Rodeo will take kids through a ride course setup in the Square to teach safe riding skills. The adult Slow Ride will also roll from Malaga Square at 12 noon. More information

is available at bikepensacola.org, or on Bike Pensacola’s Facebook page. Because most cyclists are self taught, each month we offer information about bicycle laws, safety tips, and addressing different bicycling skills that will help keep rides safe and enjoyable. The ride will be about one hour and ten minutes long, at a casual pace. Nobody will be dropped or left behind. Children must be at least 10 years of age to ride their own bicycle, and ages 10 to 16 must be accompanied by an adult. No pets are allowed on the Rides. Cyclists under 16 must wear a helmet by law; ages 16 and up helmets are recommended but are not required by law. We will enjoy a ride escorted by officers of the Pensacola Police Department. GULF WINDS CREDIT UNION STRENGTHENS SUPPORT FOR LOCAL SENIORS WITH $10,000 GIFT TO COUNCIL ON AGING OF WEST FLORIDA Gulf Winds Credit Union is proud to contribute a $10,000 gift to Council on Aging of West Florida in support of programs that help older adults live healthy, independent lives. Recently, Gulf Winds presented the first half of the donation—$5,000—as part of a month-long matching campaign focused on expanding critical services that promote nutrition, socialization, and movement. The second half of the gift will be presented on Giving Tuesday. For over 50 years, Council on Aging of West Florida has dedicated each day to serving, supporting, and advocating for aging adults in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties by providing services such as Meals on Wheels, the Retreat Adult Daycare and Senior Companion programs. “The Council on Aging is a lifeline for seniors in our community,” Gulf Winds Credit Union President and CEO Daniel Souers said. “We are honored to partner with an organiza-

tion that is driving real, lasting change, and building a stronger, more caring community.” As a long-standing supporter of Council on Aging, Gulf Winds is also grateful for the opportunity to support aging adults beyond financial giving. Through sponsorship of events like Kites on the Coast and hands-on volunteer efforts at Council on Aging’s Adult Daycare, the Retreat, this partnership reflects Gulf Wind’s continued commitment to making a meaningful difference, one act of support at a time. “At Council on Aging, we serve 2,200 seniors in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties,” Council on Aging of West Florida President and CEO Josh Newby said “This vital work would not be possible without the support of organizations like Gulf Winds. Every Gulf Winds and donor dollar truly does have a measurable and tangible impact. With their help, we’re furthering our mission to support seniors and celebrate the lives they’ve lived.”

CITY OF PENSACOLA COMPLETES HISTORIC REAL ESTATE ACQUISITION OF BAPTIST HOSPITAL LEGACY CAMPUS The City of Pensacola announced today the successful completion of its acquisition of the Baptist Hospital legacy campus located on E and Moreno Streets, marking a significant milestone in the city's revitalization efforts. The property transfer, totaling approximately 41 acres, finalized through a donation agreement with Baptist Health Care, represents one of the most transformational development opportunities in Pensacola's recent history. The agreement originated from a letter of intent signed in early January 2024 by Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves and Mark Faulkner of Baptist Health Care, stating that Baptist would donate the legacy campus to the city for redevelopment upon the city securing sufficient funding for demolition and remediation. "This is a monumental step forward for the entire Pensacola community, particularly for this historic neighborhood surrounding the campus," said Mayor D.C. Reeves. "This is a testament to what we can achieve when the city, our local partners, and the state legislature align on a vision to do what is right for our citizens. We take on these big projects so we can move uncertainty to action." "The donation of our Legacy Campus to the City of Pensacola reflects Baptist Health Care’s enduring commitment to the community we’ve proudly served for more than seven decades,” said Mark Faulkner, CEO and President of Baptist Health Care. “We’re excited to see this property reimagined in a way that continues to benefit our entire region and we’re appreciative for the city’s visionary leadership in shaping a vibrant future for this

historic site. This collaboration among the city, the state of Florida, and the county will be a model for other communities to follow." District 7 City Councilman Delarian Wiggins adds, “As we take down these walls, we are not erasing history. We’re laying the foundation for hope. What once served as a place of healing will rise again as a place of living, reminding us that every ending carries within it the promise of a new beginning.” The acquisition includes the former hospital buildings and surrounding property that served the Pensacola community for over seven decades, before Baptist Health Care transitioned operations to its new healthcare complex in 2023. Next Steps and Timeline With the property now under city ownership, the next phase involves comprehensive demolition and environmental remediation of the site. The remediation aspect will address any toxic materials that contribute to the project's complexity and cost. The city has been working aggressively on the agreement and timeline, with demolition anticipated to begin at the end of this year and conclude in summer 2027. Mayor Reeves and the city are planning a series of public engagement sessions to include residents of the surrounding neighborhood as well as members of the military. The City of Pensacola will provide regular updates on the demolition timeline and future redevelopment plans for the site. Public input opportunities will be announced as the project progresses.

UF/IFAS EXTENSION SANTA ROSA COUNTY PEANUT BUTTER CHALLENGE The UF/IFAS Santa Rosa County Extension Service asks community members to donate unopened jars of peanut butter to their office or other participating locations during the month of October. The donations are then given to local food pantries and other partners in the fight against food insecurity. In 2024, Santa Rosa County collected 2,102 jars/2,940 pounds of peanut butter. In addition to community donations, the Florida Peanut Producers Association (FPPA) and Florida Peanut Federation (FPF) have partnered with the project for years. These organizations are based in the northwest and northeast peanut-producing regions of the state and will again contribute to the totals distributed to food pantries in those regions. UWF HAAS CENTER AWARDED $400K NSF EPIIC GRANT The University of West Florida’s Haas Center has been awarded a $400,000 Enabling Partnerships to Increase Innovation Capacity, or EPIIC, grant from the National Science Foundation. The three-year grant will support the creation of a new Office of Industrial Innovation, which will serve as a front door to connect UWF faculty experts with regional industry needs, making it easier for businesses to access the University’s research capabilities and talent. Housed within the Haas Center, the Office of Industrial Innovation will serve as a centralized hub for industry collaboration. The office will identify faculty subject matter experts, connect them with businesses in need of research and development support, and ensure partnerships move at the speed of business. This initiative will also create funded research opportunities for students, giving them valuable hands-on experience with real-world projects. “With this seed funding, we aim to establish mechanisms that enable our researchers to pursue public- and private-sector opportunities at the speed of business, unbound by the constraints of the academic calendar,” said Nicole Gislason, executive director of UWF’s Haas Center and co-principal investigator. The grant is part of a project called Advancing Regional Innovation through Sustainable Engagement, or ARISE. The project’s goal is to enhance institutional capacity for applied research partnerships with industry, government and other educational institutions, strengthening each university’s role in regional economic development. UWF is one of five universities comprising the ARISE initiative, along with Frostburg State University, Northern Virginia Community

College, University of Texas Permian Basin and University of Wisconsin–Parkside. “The technical knowledge and skills of UWF faculty researchers is world-class, reflecting their extensive academic and professional preparation,” said Dr. Matthew Schwartz, professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and co-principal investigator. “The goal of NSF EPIIC and the UWF Office of Industrial Innovation is to make sure that UWF can easily establish contractual partnerships to connect regional industries, municipalities, NGOs and other groups with UWF researchers in support of regional research and development.” The EPIIC program was designed to help smaller research universities like UWF expand their role as key contributors to regional economic growth. The grant will allow UWF to build the infrastructure and processes needed to better partner with private industry, support workforce development and ultimately strengthen the region’s capacity for innovation. The effort also positions UWF to contribute to national research priorities in areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, biotechnology, cybersecurity, energy efficiency technologies and materials science. “UWF is full of talent that some in the community are not aware of,” said Dr. Mohamed Khabou, dean of the Hal Marcus College of Science and Engineering and co-principal investigator. “This grant will help unveil these talents to the regional industries and kickstart new opportunities in key areas of the economy.” For more information about UWF’s Haas Center, visit the Haas Center website.

CITY OF PENSACOLA INVITES COMMUNITY INPUT ON BAY BLUFFS PARK PROJECT

BRACE TO LEAD SANTA ROSA COUNTY LONG-TERM RECOVERY GROUP

The City of Pensacola invites the public to give their input as it embarks on preserving Bay Bluffs Park, in coordination with Conservation Florida. A public listening session is scheduled for Tuesday, October 22 from 6:30 to 8 pm at the Vickrey Community Center located at 2130 Summit Blvd. in Pensacola. The Bay Bluffs Park project represents a significant investment in Pensacola's park system and in preserving its cultural significance. This public listening session will provide residents with the opportunity to learn about the project's scope and offer input that will help shape the future design of the site.

BRACE (Be Ready Alliance Coordinating for Emergencies), Northwest Florida’s leading community-based disaster preparedness and recovery organization, is proud to announce that it will assume leadership of the Santa Rosa County Long-Term Recovery Group (LTRG). The Santa Rosa LTRG serves as a vital coalition of community partners working together to support residents in the aftermath of disasters by coordinating resources, services, and recovery efforts. Under BRACE’s leadership, the group will strengthen collaboration, streamline case management, and ensure disaster-impacted families receive the long-term support they need to rebuild their lives. “Santa Rosa County has a strong history of neighbors helping neighbors, and BRACE is honored to support that tradition,” said Dr. Nick Jackson, BRACE CEO. “By working alongside Santa Rosa County Emergency Management, faith-based organizations, nonprofits, and local leaders, we will ensure that recovery resources reach those who need them most—efficiently, effectively, and compassionately.” Since its founding in 2006, BRACE has coordinated disaster preparedness, response, and recovery efforts across Escambia County and beyond. The organization

Thanks to a $2.2 million state grant awarded to the city and Conservation Florida, the city is now ready to begin work on returning public access to the park. It has been closed for two years after the boardwalk system was determined too dangerous to remain open following storms and progressive deterioration. This listening session is the first step in a process to reopen the park. The feedback gained at this event will help as the city begins the design phase. For those unable to attend the October 22 meeting, an online survey is available through November 5.

TOURISM TO GULF ISLANDS NATIONAL SEASHORE CONTRIBUTES $514M TO LOCAL ECONOMIES A new National Park Service report shows that 7.8 million visitors to Gulf Islands National Seashore in 2024 spent $411 million in communities near the park. A total of 88% of the visitors were nonlocals. The park’s campgrounds continue to remain the top 3 most recreated RV campground in the national park system. “People come to Gulf Islands National Seashore from far and wide to enjoy the emerald coast waters and world class, sugarlike sand beaches and rich cultural history of the seashore in Florida and barrier islands in Mississippi, which also translates to their supporting the various local gateway communities and associated economies,” said Superintendent Rick Clark. “We’re proud that visitation to Gulf Islands National Seashore also results in the support to our gateway communities, including Pensacola, Pensacola Beach, Gulf Breeze, and Navarre in Florida and Ocean Springs, Biloxi, and Gulf Port in Mississippi.” The National Park Service report, 2024 National Park Visitor Spending Effects, finds that visitors spent $29 billion in communities near national parks. This spending

provided $18.8 billion in labor income and $56.3 in economic output to the U.S. economy. The lodging sector had the highest direct contributions with $11.1 billion in economic output. Restaurants received the next greatest direct contributions with $5.7 billion in economic output. An interactive tool is available to explore visitor spending, labor income, and total economic contribution by sector for national, state and local economies. Users can also view year-by-year trend data. The interactive tool and report are available on the NPS website. To learn more about national parks in Florida and Mississippi and how the National Park Service works with the communities to help preserve local history, conserve the environment, and provide outdoor recreation, go to nps.gov/guis. UWF SECURES $1.5M U.S. DOE GRANT TO EXPAND CIVIC EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES The U.S. Department of Education has awarded a three-year, $1,555,318 grant to the University of West Florida to expand the UWF Summer Institute for Civics Educators into the Academy of American Civic Republicanism. The new Academy will provide yearround opportunities to strengthen civic education for K-12 teachers, UWF students and the Northwest Florida community. “One of the most exciting projects our department has undertaken in recent years has been the development of our Summer Institutes for middle and high school teachers of civics, American government and U.S. history," said Dr. David Ramsey, professor and chair of the UWF Reubin O'D. Askew Department of Government. “This funding will help to ensure continued support and expansion of these efforts to promote civil discourse and civic education, both here on campus and in the community.” Building on the success of the Summer Institute for Civics Educators, the Academy of American Civic Republicanism will serve as a year-round academic unit, offering specialized training for Northwest Florida educators, developing undergraduate courses on principles of Civic Republicanism in Colonial America and the American

founding and establishing a post-doctoral fellowship to support teaching and research. Programming will also include guest lectures, public debates and training on the Florida Civics and Debate Initiative, all designed to engage both students and the wider community. To enhance these efforts, the Academy will draw on the expertise and resources of the UWF Historic Trust, Archaeology Institute, Reubin O’D. Askew Department of Government and the UWF Speech and Debate team. “The programming that this grant will help us advance education at all levels on the unique system of government of the American republic and the particular civic way of life that supports it,” said Clifford Humphrey, chief of staff and vice president of strategic initiatives. “We are blessed to live in the greatest country in the history of the world, and it is our duty and pleasure to teach the citizens of this region about its noble principles and history.” Through this combination of professional development, academic coursework and public programming, UWF is laying the groundwork for the Academy to become a degree-granting entity focused on civic thought and leadership.

Santa Rosa County Emergency Management welcomed the expanded partnership. “Having BRACE step into this leadership role strengthens our community’s ability to recover from disasters,” said Tom Lloyd, Santa Rosa County Public Safety Director. “We are confident that BRACE’s experience and expertise will provide strong guidance for long-term recovery in Santa Rosa County.” The Santa Rosa LTRG will convene local partners regularly to assess recovery needs, allocate resources, and ensure that individuals and families affected by disasters have access to assistance. BRACE will serve as program manager, facilitating meetings, coordinating case management, and supporting fundraising efforts to sustain recovery work.
