SUMMER FREE FOR ALL

Some of the best things in life are free, and this is certainly true when it comes to summer fun in Pensacola. From beachside concerts and outdoor movie nights to yoga in the park and stargazing under the clear night skies, there’s something fun happening every week to keep your calendar full and your wallet happy. So grab your friends, pack a blanket or a lawn chair and take advantage of all the free events and activities happening around town — because the best summer memories don’t have to come with a price tag.

Bands on the Beach

Turn your summer nights into a beachside dance party at Bands on the Beach. The festival will include over 20 Gulf Coast food trucks serving wings and pickle creations as well as seafood, barbeque and more. The Pickle Marketplace will showcase local makers and artisans with unique goods and pickle themed treasures. A kids zone will offer carnival games like the ring toss plus balloon artists, face painting and bounce

houses for lots of family fun. The festival’s main stage will showcase local talent throughout the day, featuring singers, dancers, poets, spoken word artists, and acoustic performers. All this and pickle-themed photo stations to take photos and commemorate the event. A portion of proceeds benefits Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northwest Florida, so have fun in the name of pickles and a good cause!

NAS PENSACOLA VOLUNTEERS RESTORE WHITE ISLAND SHORELINE

Volunteers from Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola and the local community planted more than 2,500 native wetland plants on White Island May 2, in celebration of the installation’s 200th birthday and as part of a shoreline restoration project.

“Forming this island as part of the project and getting it planted so that the sand can hold is something the county undertook and they asked us to provide some volunteers,” said Steve Opalenik, NAS Pensacola’s community planning and liaison officer. “Lo and behold, we had more than we expected today.”

More than 40 volunteers signed up through NAS Pensacola’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) program and were ferried from Bayou Grande Marina to the nearby White Island by MWR personnel. Once on the island, they got to work planting native species.

“This island was not here before,” said Paige Lansky, a Coastal Restoration Coordinator at the Pensacola & Perdido Bays Estuary Program. “What we’re doing is helping create what once was. We are restoring the function of these islands by putting in native wetland plants all along them.”

As part of the Living Shoreline initiative, a conservation project led by Escambia County in close coordination with NAS Pensacola, volunteers worked closely with Pensacola and Perdido Bays Estuary Program professionals to ensure the 2,500 specimens representing three species of native wetland flora were planted correctly.

GULF COAST PRESS THE CHEST COMMUNITY CPR EVENT MAY 17

The public is invited to learn the lifesaving skill of CPR at the Gulf Coast Press the Chest Community CPR Event on Sunday, May 17, from 1-3 p.m. at the Pensacola Bay Center, 201 E. Gregory St. in Pensacola. This free, community-wide CPR training event is open to all ages and aims to empower citizens with lifesaving skills that could make the difference in an emergency.

Attendees will learn the latest recommendations and procedures from the American Heart Association, including hands-only CPR for adults, child CPR with breaths, and choking relief methods for both adults and children, as well as how to use automated external defibrillators, or AEDs. The Gulf Coast Press the Chest Community CPR Event will offer a fun, interactive environment led by local medical professionals and first responders.

The Gulf Coast Press the Chest Community CPR Event is a collaborative effort between the following organizations:

• Escambia County EMS

• Escambia County Public Safety

• Santa Rosa County Public Safety

• Lifeguard Ambulance Services

• District One EMS Council of Northwest Florida

“Before this event, I didn’t really know the importance or significance of doing this, but now that I’ve come out here and see the damage and the history of what happened here, it resonates with me,” said Air Force Airman Jevon Hilton, assigned to the Air Force 316th Training Squadron at NAS Pensacola’s Correy Station Annex, and one of the event volunteers. “I want to make sure the plants and everything are safe in my area. Even doing this, it kind of makes the soul feel good.”

Historically, White Island was an integral part of NAS Pensacola, hosting a railway leading onto the installation. Washed away by hurricanes and erosion, White Island was restored through the Living Shoreline initiative by dredging the sand back into its historic place. Volunteers then installed the native plants along the shoreline in an effort to prevent future erosion and maintain the island as an NAS Pensacola recreation area.

“We enjoy the community; we enjoy doing things for it when we can get folks to come together,” said Opalenik. “They may not have known what White Island was until today, and maybe they’ll come back in five or 10 years when they’re stationed here and say ‘hey, I planted that plant.’ Anything that we can do to help keep that community spirit alive and to celebrate our 200 years is an awesome day.”

Along with numerous aviation and cyber warfare training activities, Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola maintains an operational airfield and deepwater port, preserving U.S. Armed Forces operational platforms.

The Importance of CPR

CPR is an emergency life-saving procedure performed when the heart stops beating. Immediate CPR can double or triple the chances of survival after cardiac arrest, according to the American Heart Association. CPR helps keep blood flowing in the body, extending the opportunity for a successful resuscitation once trained medical staff arrive. CPR Stats from the American Heart Association:

• More than 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur each year in the United States.

• Less than half (46%) of bystanders will perform CPR. Every minute counts; survival rates without CPR decrease by 10% as each minute passes.

• More than one in three American adults (estimated 85.6 million), have more than one form of cardiovascular disease. On average, someone dies of CVD every 37 seconds in the U.S.

SEA TURTLE NESTING SEASON KICKS OFF

Escambia County Sea Turtle Conservation Program volunteers greeted the sun early the morning of May 1, as they officially kicked off the start of sea turtle nesting season. That day marked their first daily morning patrol on Pensacola Beach and Perdido Key, looking for nesting and other turtle activity occurring overnight. Volunteers start their patrols at first light to have the best chance of spotting tracks, nests and other turtle activity before footprints, wind and waves obscure the tracks. Volunteers and staff will continue to check on nests during the incubation period, ensuring they remain undisturbed and remain on stand-by to assist with strandings and other turtle-related incidents. The nesting season will run through September, although late season nests can hatch as late as October.

Four species of sea turtle nest in Escambia County. The loggerhead and green sea turtles are the most common nesters, followed by the less common Kemp’s ridley and leatherback. Female turtles will make their way onto the beaches through early summer and may nest several times in a single season.

After 60 days of incubation, the tiny hatchling turtles will emerge all at once under cover of darkness and race to the water. The hatchlings will make their way to open water with fewer predators. After a few years of growing and feeding, they will return to the area as juveniles and sub-adults. Here, they will continue to grow and feed until they are mature enough to mate and lay their nests. Juvenile and adult sea turtles can often be seen foraging in the bays and sounds, including near local fishing piers and artificial reefs.

However, sea turtles aren’t the only summertime visitors. Several species of shorebirds nest on local beaches in the summer months, including the least tern, snowy plover, Wilson's plover and black

skimmer. Shorebird nests are shallow scrapes in the sand with tiny, well-camouflaged eggs. Eggs will incubate up to 30 days before the small, cotton ball-like chicks hatch. Parents often sit on the eggs with newly hatched chicks to protect them from predators and the hot Florida sun.

In addition, summer is a busy tourist season, and big crowds can have significant impacts on sea turtles, shorebirds, and other coastal wildlife. Keep in mind that people and pets approaching too close disturb birds. Help Protect Our Coastal Wildlife by Remembering:

• Lights Out: Bright lights can disturb nesting sea turtles and disorient adults and hatchlings on the beach. When visiting the beach after dark, keep cell phones and flashlights off. Instead, use a red flashlight or no light at all. For beachfront homes, turn off exterior lights when not in use and keep blinds and curtains shut after sunset.

• Leave Only Footprints: Help keep the beaches obstacle-free for nesting and hatchling turtles. All personal items, including chairs, tents, umbrellas, toys and water equipment, must be removed from the beach by sunset each day. Make sure to fill in holes and flatten any sandcastles.

• Share the Beach: Stay out of posted nesting areas and avoid setting up belongings on the edges of marked areas. Avoid disturbing birds resting on the beach; if you see a nesting sea turtle, give it space. Do not handle sea turtles or shorebird eggs and hatchlings. Dogs are only allowed in designated beach dog parks and must always be kept on a leash.

Dead or injured sea turtles and marine life should be reported to Escambia County Marine Resources or the FWC Wildlife Alert line. All sea turtle work is performed under Marine Turtle Permits #032 and #202.

PENAIR CREDIT UNION KICKS OFF SNACKSTOCK 2026, UNITING COMMUNITY PARTNERS TO SUPPORT LOCAL CANCER PATIENTS

PenAir Credit Union (PenAir) is officially launching SnackStock 2026, a month-long community initiative dedicated to collecting individually packaged snacks for cancer patients receiving treatment at Ascension Sacred Heart Cancer Center. SnackStock brings together trusted community partners, including Ascension Sacred Heart and the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, to provide comfort and encouragement during long days of care for patients and their families.

The start of this year’s drive was marked by a kickoff event held at Ascension Sacred Heart Cancer Center, highlighting the collective commitment behind SnackStock. Leaders from PenAir Credit Union, Ascension Sacred Heart, and the Pensacola Blue Wahoos came together to emphasize the importance of collaboration, and the impact small acts of generosity can have when multiplied across a caring community.

SnackStock was created to meet a simple but meaningful need. Cancer treatments often involve lengthy appointments, waiting, and uncertainty. They are filled with moments when something as small as a snack can offer comfort and remind patients they are supported. Through SnackStock, community members are invited to take part in a tangible way, transforming everyday generosity into real encouragement for those facing difficult circumstances.

“At PenAir Credit Union, our purpose is to enhance lives, and SnackStock is one way we live that out alongside our partners,” said Lee Morgan, President and CEO of PenAir Credit Union.

Ascension Sacred Heart leaders underscored how initiatives like SnackStock help support the whole person, not just the medical journey, reinforcing the importance of compassion and dignity throughout treatment.

“During treatment, time slows down and patients carry far more than the physical side of their care,” says Zachary Abercrombie, CFO at Ascension Sacred Heart. “ Behind every infusion is a person facing emotional and financial uncertainty, and in those moments, even the smallest acts of kindness can mean everything.”

The Pensacola Blue Wahoos continue to play a key role in raising awareness and rallying community support, using their platform to connect fans, families, and local organizations around a shared mission of care.

“Each day, the Wahoos strive to make memorable experiences,” says Jonathan Grifitth, President of the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. “Being a part of SnackStock gives us another way to do that and show up for those in our community going through a difficult time.”

SnackStock 2026 shows what’s possible when a community comes together. With PenAir Credit Union, Ascension Sacred Heart, and the Pensacola Blue Wahoos helping lead the effort, individuals, families, businesses, and community partners across the region are invited to donate snacks and help surpass this year’s goal of 8,000 snacks for patients in need.

SnackStock 2026 runs throughout the month of May, with donations benefiting cancer patients at Ascension Sacred Heart Cancer Center. Donations can be dropped off at any PenAir location, or at any Wahoos home game during the month of May.
