ENCHANTED DRAWINGS WHERE ANIMATION HISTORY COMES TO LIFE

By Morgan Cole

F

or generations, animated characters have made us laugh, cry and quote our favorite one-liners long after the credits roll. Whether it was Bugs Bunny outsmarting Elmer Fudd, Pinocchio dreaming of becoming a real boy or Betty Boop’s unmistakable charm, these iconic characters share one origin story — they all began as simple sketches. Now, visitors can step behind the scenes at the Pensacola Museum of Art’s Enchanted Drawings: The Magic of Animation. Featuring more than 50 original works from the private collection of Pensacola residents Gerald and Vicki Adcox, the exhibit offers a rare glimpse into the artistry and craftsmanship that brought some of the world’s most recognizable animated films and characters to life. Original concept sketches, handpainted production cels and lithographs reveal the painstaking process that transformed simple pencil lines into timeless screen icons. Alongside historic animation tools, classic cartoons and interactive displays, the exhibit traces the evolution of the art form from its early experiments with moving images to the golden age of hand-drawn animation. More than a showcase of nostalgic characters, Enchanted Drawings tells the story of animation itself and the artists whose creativity and innovation brought these timeless characters to life. At the heart of the exhibit is a personal story that began more than 40 years ago with an unexpected stop at a shopping mall. Gerald Adcox still remembers the moment. In 1985, while visiting Chicago with his wife, Vicki, the couple came across a small display of animation art. There was no auction or gallery opening, just a chance encounter that would spark a lifelong passion for collecting. “My wife and I were strolling through a shopping mall in Chicago when we saw them,” Adcox said. “Nobody was selling animation art, so it was the first time we had ever seen anything like it. We bought a couple little pieces, and we just got addicted from that point forward.” One of those first purchases was a Bugs Bunny animation cel. That single piece became the foundation for a collection that has grown into roughly 70 original drawings,

production cels and lithographs spanning some of animation’s most celebrated studios and artists. For more than four decades, the collection lived quietly inside the Adcoxes’ home, shared mostly with friends and family. Now, for the first time, visitors can see these cherished works for themselves. “I’ve always wanted to show people the collection,” Adcox said. “But you can’t run people through your house, so this is a way to do that.” The opportunity for a public exhibit came after Pensacola Museum of Art Director Nicholas Croghan visited Adcox several years ago. While their initial conversations centered on Gerald’s broader interests in art and vintage guitars, the discussion soon turned to animation and the remarkable collection he and Vicki had quietly built over the years. “I had the opportunity to meet Gerald and visit his office,” Croghan said. “He has an amazing collection of modern art, vintage guitars and illustrations from renowned animators and artists. As we talked, we developed the idea for an exhibit focused on storytelling through animation.” Rather than simply hanging artwork on gallery walls, Croghan wanted the exhibit to reveal the story behind the medium by showing visitors how animation evolved, how the process works and how much craftsmanship is hidden within every frame. “Our goal was to show original illustrations alongside early methods of creating movement, filmmaking techniques and classic animated cartoons,” Croghan explained. “The exhibit unfolds chronologically and ends with a drawing station where visitors can actually try it themselves.” That chronological journey begins with The Enchanted Drawing (1900), one of the earliest films to incorporate animated elements. From there, the exhibit traces the rise of animation studios, the emergence of feature-length animated films and the arrival of television cartoons. Along the way, visitors see how innovations like hand-painted cels, rotoscoping, the multiplane camera and advances in color helped shape the industry and pave the way for today’s digital animation. The history is brought to life through original sketches, production cels and lithographs from influ-

ential artists, alongside historic devices on loan from the Pensacola History Museum — including a magic lantern and a zoetrope that demonstrate some of the earliest attempts to create motion. Screenings of landmark shorts such as Prest-O ChangeO and Dizzy Dishes further connect the artwork on display to the finished films audiences know and recognize. Those films also mark key milestones in animation history. Prest-O Change-O (1939), directed by Chuck Jones, features an early appearance of the character who would eventually become Bugs Bunny, while Dizzy Dishes (1930) introduced Betty Boop to audiences. Selecting what to include was no easy task. Croghan said the Adcox collection is extensive, and the goal was to choose works that best illustrate the artistic evolution of animation. “We wanted to create a survey of animation history,” Croghan explained. “Each piece serves as a step in that journey. We focused on strong examples of original drawings and hand-painted cels that show process, character development and the golden era of American animation.” What makes the collection especially distinctive is not just the artwork, but the relationships behind it. Adcox’s personal friendship with legendary animator Chuck Jones adds rare historical context. Jones, who helped create characters like Bugs Bunny, the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote, also became part of Adcox’s collecting journey. “Gerald had a personal relationship with Chuck Jones,” Croghan said. “That connection helped spark his passion for collecting, and his

stories add provenance and depth to the work.” Adcox recalls visiting Jones at his home in Newport Beach and later interviewing him during his time working in California. “I was able to go to his home and interview him,” Adcox said. “A couple pieces came directly from him.” He also visited the studio of Jones’ daughter, Linda, where animation artwork was being prepared for collectors. Those experiences helped shape a collection that now includes rare and significant pieces. Among them is a hand-painted cel featuring Pinocchio and the Blue Fairy, along with a complete set of Chuck Jones’ Master Works lithographs that reimagine iconic Looney Tunes characters in the styles of renowned artists such as Van Gogh, Dalí, Chagall, ToulouseLautrec and Munch. “The complete set of Master Works — nobody else has a full set,” Adcox said. “It’s 11 pieces, and it’s complete.” Croghan describes the exhibit as a playful intersection of fine art history and animation, blending high art references with Looney Tunes humor. While longtime animation fans will recognize many of the characters, the exhibit is designed for all audiences. Interactive elements encourage visitors to think like animators and explore the creative process themselves. That approach continues at the exhibit’s final stop: a drawing station where visitors can learn to sketch familiar characters using step-bystep instructions. It has quickly become one of the most popular parts of the show.

“Nick did such a great job putting together the exhibit,” Adcox said. “People are learning how to draw characters like the Road Runner and Pepe Le Pew. There’s always someone at that table when I stop in for a visit.” For Croghan, that interaction speaks to the heart of what the exhibit is meant to do. “We want visitors to leave having discovered something new,” he said. “To try drawing, explore the process and connect with animation in a different way.” In the end, every sketch, cel and painting serves as a reminder that what audiences see on screen begins with thousands of drawings, created one frame at a time. For Adcox, sharing that world with the public has been deeply rewarding after decades of collecting. “It’s just a happy exhibit,” he said. “It brings people back to their childhood. Everything in it makes you smile.” Whether you’re an animation fan or someone who still recognizes “What’s up, Doc?,” Enchanted Drawings offers a chance to revisit beloved characters while discovering the artistry, craftsmanship and history that brought them to life. Visitors are invited to step behind the scenes and discover how every character, from Bugs Bunny and Betty Boop to Pinocchio and the Road Runner, began with nothing more than a pencil, a blank page and an idea. Enchanted Drawings: The Magic of Animation is on display through September 6 at the Pensacola Museum of Art. For tickets and information, please visit the Pensacola Museum of Art website. ■

PENSACOLA HUMANE SOCIETY LAUNCHES SPONSORSHIP AND VENDOR OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE 20TH ANNUAL BARKTOBERFEST The Pensacola Humane Society is seeking sponsors and vendors for the 20th Annual Barktoberfest, one of the Gulf Coast’s largest pet-friendly festivals and the organization's second-largest fundraiser of the year. Presented by Action Therapy Group (Beagle Benefactor sponsor) and Bob Tyler Toyota (Bow Wow Backyard sponsor), Barktoberfest will take place Sunday, Oct. 18, from 10 am to 4 pm at Seville Square and Fountain Park in Downtown Pensacola. Businesses, organizations, and community partners are invited to support the milestone event through sponsorships and vendor participation. Since its debut 20 years ago, Barktoberfest has raised awareness for homeless pets while generating critical funding to support the Pensacola Humane Society's mission of caring for animals and helping them find loving homes. In 2025, Barktoberfest saw an estimated 4,500 event visitors and featured more than 70 vendors, including pet-centric and local area businesses, veterinary practices, animal rescue organizations and shelters offering adoption opportunities. It is one of the major fundraisers for Pensacola Humane Society. “As we celebrate 20 years of Barktoberfest, we're inviting businesses and community partners to join us in making an even greater impact for homeless animals,” said Mary Donovan McClellan, Vice President of Development for Pensacola Humane Soci-

ety. “On average, it costs our shelter more than $1,400 for every animal we intake. That’s why sponsorships and donations are such an important part of Barktoberfest. Every dollar stays right here to provide shelter, medical care and the opportunity for more pets to find loving families.” Sponsorship opportunities are available at multiple levels and provide businesses with visibility before, during, and after the event while directly supporting animal welfare in the Pensacola community. Vendor applications are also now being accepted. Additional information about sponsorships, vendor opportunities and the event is available at www.pensacolahumane.org/ barktoberfest or by emailing barktoberfest@ pensacolahumane.org. PENSACOLA STATE COLLEGE CHARTER ACADEMY TO FIELD GIRLS SOCCER TEAM The Pensacola State College Charter Academy is in the process of selecting a coach for the new girls soccer team, which will begin play this fall. Leading the search and preliminary setup for the new sports program is PSC Charter Academy Athletic Director Lyndsey Angus. “I am excited about offering this opportunity for our Charter Academy students,” said Angus. “The school’s growing enrollment is at a level where there should be enough interest and talent to field a new team, and the girls will have joint use of the college’s brand new soccer complex.” The new 6.7-acre facility for PSC’s NJCAA Region 8 Division I women’s soccer champions includes a lighted NCAA regulation field, with a scoreboard, concession stand, seating, restrooms and parking, at the corner of Underwood and 12th avenues, stated PSC President Ed Meadows. Meadows said that after the fall soccer season is over, construction will begin to complete the dressing rooms and press box. There is also interest in offering other sports teams for the Charter Academy. Player selection will wait until the new coach is hired; however, PSC Charter Academy students are already being informed about the new soccer program through school communications and parent information sessions. Team tryouts will be open to girls in grades 9 through 12.

“Adding girls soccer is a big next step for us and reflects our commitment to providing a well-rounded educational experience that includes extracurricular activities and now athletics,” said Principal Karen McCabe, Ed.D. “In addition to soccer, we’re starting a co-ed esports team this year, which is another participation opportunity for our growing student population.” Many PSC Charter Academy students earn college credits while still in high school, giving student-athletes wanting a rigorous program of study the chance to accelerate their academic careers. According to McCabe, 24 of the school’s 37 graduates last school year were awarded their high school diploma and an associate degree from PSC simultaneously. “Our student-athletes will be able to earn their associate degree tuition-free, and they will leave high school prepared, both academically and athletically, for university transfer. That’s a unique opportunity and a huge factor for our community,” said Angus. The PSC Charter Academy Pirates will compete within the Escambia County Public Schools district, with soccer season starting in November. PSC Charter Academy enrollment for the upcoming 2026-2027 school year will remain open until all available seats have been filled for classes beginning Aug. 17. Parents can apply online at charteracademy.pensacolastate.edu.

GULF ISLANDS NATIONAL SEASHORE PARTIALLY REOPENS AFTER TROPICAL STORM BERTHA Gulf Islands National Seashore reopened the Perdido Key Management Area and Opal Beach Complex today at noon in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Bertha. The Fort Pickens management area was inundated with up to 10 inches of deposited sand and one foot of water along some portions of the roadway. Other areas, including the Perdido Key, Santa Rosa, Naval Live Oaks, Okaloosa, and Fort Barrancas units in Florida and the Davis Bayou unit in Mississippi experienced relatively minor to no storm effects. The following areas will remain closed until further condition assessments can be

fully completed: Florida • Fort Pickens Management Area • The Fort Pickens Campground Mississippi • Ship Island, including all visitor use facilities and Fort Massachusetts About the National Park Service. Established in 1916, the National Park Service preserves America’s most treasured natural and cultural places for the enjoyment, education and inspiration of current and future generations.

SANTA ROSA COUNTY 4-H YOUTH, VOLUNTEERS REMOVE 158 POUNDS OF MARINE DEBRIS FROM NAVARRE BEACH Three days after Tropical Storm Bertha passed by the area, Santa Rosa County 4-H youth and volunteers teamed up with UF/IFAS Sea Grant Agent Thomas Derbes to remove 158 pounds of marine debris from Navarre Beach during a four-mile cleanup effort that stretched to Opal Beach. Supported in part by the Guy Harvey Foundation, the cleanup allowed participants to help restore the coastline while learning about the impacts storms have on Florida's coastal environment. The event provided more than a community service opportunity; it became an authentic, hands-on educational experience that strengthened environmental literacy, leadership, civic engagement and workforce readiness. Some of the 158 pounds of marine debris included a discarded fishing pole and a tangled mass of monofilament fishing line with four attached fishing lures. Along the way, the group also rescued several stranded starfish by returning them to the Gulf and protected a Lightning Whelk egg case by relocating it to a safer area on the beach. These real-world experiences allowed youth to directly connect the effects of severe weather, human activity and coastal ecosystem health. Environmental Science and Stewardship The cleanup transformed the beach into an outdoor classroom where youth observed firsthand how tropical storms redistribute litter and marine debris. Rather than learning about pollution solely through books or classroom instruction, participants witnessed the immediate impacts of storm surge and wave action on Florida's coastline. They learned to identify different types of marine debris, distinguish between natural and humanmade materials and understand how improperly discarded waste can travel long distances before washing ashore. Removing fishing equipment provided a valuable lesson about "ghost gear”, which is lost or abandoned fishing gear that continues to injure wildlife long after it has been discarded.

The tangled monofilament line with four attached fishing lures served as a real-world example of how sea turtles, shorebirds, dolphins, fish and other marine animals can become entangled or hooked, often resulting in injury or death. Youth also learned about responsible fishing practices and the importance of properly disposing of or recycling fishing line. Wildlife Conservation and Coastal Ecology The cleanup became an opportunity for direct wildlife conservation. Participants encountered several live starfish that had been stranded above the high-tide line by the storm's powerful waves. Under the guidance of Thomas Derbes, they learned how to safely return the animals to the water while discussing their ecological role in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems. The group also discovered a Lightning Whelk egg case that the storm had displaced. Rather than disturbing it, the youth learned how to identify this important native marine species and carefully relocated the egg case to a safer location where it was less vulnerable to damage from foot traffic or subsequent tides. This introduced participants to the life cycles of marine invertebrates and reinforced the importance of protecting wildlife during every stage of development. Conducting the cleanup shortly after the storm also helped participants understand how natural disasters can intensify threats to coastal wildlife. They observed how debris can obstruct nesting sea turtles, entangle hatchlings, damage shorebird habitat and degrade fragile coastal ecosystems. These experiences reinforced the interconnected relationship between healthy habitats, resilient communities and thriving wildlife populations. About Santa Rosa County 4-H Santa Rosa County 4-H is a youth development program that provides hands-on educational experiences in leadership, citizenship and life skills. Through programs like archery, 4-H empowers young people to develop confidence, responsibility and teamwork.

The U.K. is one of Florida's most important international economic partners. The U.K. the state's largest international investment employer—accounting for roughly 1 in 5 international investment jobs in Florida. Florida serves as the UK's commercial gateway to Latin America, the Caribbean and the Southeastern United States. Since 2019 bilateral merchandise trade between Florida and the U.K. has grown by more than 20%. In 2025, total bilateral merchandise trade between Florida and United Kingdom was more than $4.1 billion. Florida exported $1.3 billion in Florida-origin goods to the U.K., and the U.K. exported $2.8 billion in goods to Florida.

UWF AND NWFSC EXPAND ENGINEERING PATHWAYS WITH FOUR NEW TRANSFER DEGREE PROGRAMS The University of West Florida and Northwest Florida State College are expanding opportunities for students to pursue engineering careers in Northwest Florida through four new Specialized Associate in Arts Transfer, or SAAT, degree pathways that create a seamless route from associate-level coursework at NWFSC to bachelor’s degree completion through UWF. Approved by the Florida State Board of Education during its July 22 meeting in Orlando, the new pathways allow students to begin their engineering education at NWFSC’s Niceville campus and continue into UWF’s upper-division engineering programs at the joint NWFSC-UWF campus in Fort Walton Beach. The four newly approved SAAT programs include civil engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering. “This partnership reflects what higher education should do–create opportunities that meet students where they are and prepare them for where they want to go,” UWF President Manny Diaz Jr. said. “Together, UWF and Northwest Florida State College are expanding access to engineering education while strengthening the workforce that will drive innovation and economic growth across Northwest Florida. Students can begin their academic journey at NWFSC and then complete a UWF engineering degree without leaving the community they call home.” The new engineering pathways build upon the longstanding partnership between the two institutions to increase opportunities to complete bachelor’s degrees without leaving the region. “A student can start here, stay here and build a successful future here,” said NWFSC President Mel Ponder. “Students will be able to start their engineering degree at Northwest Florida State College, continue through the University of West Florida and complete a high-quality bachelor’s degree close to home. By working together, NWFSC and UWF are removing barri-

ers, expanding access and building a stronger pipeline of engineers prepared to support our region’s military installations, defense industry and growing technology economy.” The SAAT degree allows state colleges like NWFSC to provide additional lower-division coursework beyond the traditional 60-credit Associate in Arts degree when students need specialized preparation before transferring into designated university programs. The structure helps students complete the mathematics, science and engineering prerequisites required for upper-division study before entering their bachelor’s degree programs. “This is exactly the kind of partnership that strengthens both our College and the communities we serve,” said Rhea Goff, chair of the NWFSC District Board of Trustees. “Students should not have to leave Northwest Florida to pursue an engineering education or prepare for careers in industries that are vital to our region. These new pathways give local students an affordable and accessible starting point while helping employers develop the highly skilled workforce they need.” The coordinated pathway is designed to provide students with a more seamless transition from NWFSC to UWF. Students will begin by completing foundational coursework at NWFSC before advancing into upper-division engineering instruction through UWF at the institutions’ joint campus in Fort Walton Beach. The new pathways will also support the region’s need for engineers in high-demand fields connected to aerospace, defense, construction, infrastructure, manufacturing, technology and advanced industry. By combining the accessibility and affordability of NWFSC with UWF’s upper-division engineering programs, students will have a clear route from their first college course through completion of a bachelor’s degree. Additional information regarding program enrollment, advising, course sequencing and anticipated start dates will be announced as implementation plans are finalized.

NOTICE OF HEARING TO IMPOSE AND PROVIDE FOR COLLECTION OF NON-AD VALOREM ASSESSMENTS Notice is hereby given that the City Council of the City of Pensacola, Florida, will conduct a public hearing to consider reimposing Stormwater Service Assessments in the area receiving Stormwater Management Service from the City, as shown below, for the fiscal year beginning October 1, 2026 and future fiscal years. The hearing will be held at 5:30 pm on Thursday, August 13, 2026, in the City Council Chambers in City Hall, 222 West Main Street, Pensacola, Florida. The City of Pensacola adheres to the Americans with Disabilities Act and will make reasonable accommodations for access to City services, programs, and activities. Please call (850) 435-1606 (or TDD (850) 435-1666) for further information. The request must be made at least 48 hours in advance of the event in order to allow the City time to provide requested services. All affected property owners have a right to appear at the hearing and to file written objections with the City Council. All written objections to the non-ad valorem assessments must be filed with the City Council of Pensacola within twenty (20) days of this notice. Please include your name, parcel number and the reason you object to the assessment on all written objections. Address all written objections as follows: The Finance; Objections to Non-ad Valorem Assessment; Post Office Box 12910, Pensacola, Florida 32521. Any person wishing to appeal any decision of the City Council with respect to any matter considered will need a record of the proceedings and may wish to ensure that a verbatim record of the proceedings is made. The Stormwater Service Assessments have been imposed to fund the City's cost to provide Stormwater Management Service in the area shown above. The Stormwater Service Assessments are based upon the estimated amount

of stormwater runoff generated by impervious surface on the property. Impervious surfaces include the rooftop, patios, driveways, parking lots and similar areas. The City has determined that the median single-family residence in the Stormwater Service Area includes 2,998 square feet of impervious surface, which is defined as the "equivalent stormwater unit value" or "ESU Value." The annual Stormwater Service Assessment rate for the upcoming Fiscal Year will be $120.49 for each Net ESU. Generally, the number of ESUs was calculated individually for each parcel of property by dividing the impervious surface area by 2,998 square feet. Credit for privately maintained Stormwater management facilities and other factors affecting the quantity or quality of Stormwater runoff has also been applied, resulting in an assignment of Net ESUs. A more specific description is set forth in the Amended and Restated Initial Stormwater Assessment Resolution adopted by the City Council on July 22, 2010. Copies of the Stormwater Services Assessment Ordinance (Ordinance No. 52-00), Amended and Restated Initial Assessment Resolution (Resolution No. 18-10), Amended and Restated Final Assessment Resolution (Resolution No. 36-10), and the updated assessment roll are available for inspection at the Office of the City Clerk, 222 West Main Street, 3rd Floor, Pensacola, Florida. The Stormwater Service Assessment, except for those imposed on government property, will be collected on the annual property ad valorem tax bill that is mailed in November by the Escambia County Tax Collector. Failure to pay the Stormwater Service Assessment will cause a tax certificate to be issued against the assessed property, which may result in a loss of title.

ICE FLYERS RE-SIGN FORWARD TYLER GERMAN FOR 2026-27 SEASON The Pensacola Ice Flyers announced today that the team has re-signed forward Tyler German for the 2026-27 season. German returns to Pensacola after recording 28 points on 16 goals and 12 assists in 58 regularseason games during his first season with the Ice Flyers. The Canton, Michigan, native added 2 assists in three postseason appearances. “We're excited to welcome Tyler German back to Pensacola,” said Head Coach Jeremy Gates. “Tyler is a dependable player who competes every shift, plays the game the right way, and brings a strong work ethic that fits exactly what we're building. His familiarity with our organization and commitment to our standards make him an important piece as we continue to build a team that our fans are proud of.” A right-shot winger, German joined the Ice Flyers late in the 2024-25 season following the conclusion of his collegiate career at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Where he produced 39 points (14g, 25a) across 89 games. German reunites with former University

of Wisconsin–Stevens Point teammate Andrew Poulias as part of the Ice Flyers' 2026–27 roster. Known for his speed, physicality, scoring ability, German established himself as an important piece to the Pensacola lineup last season. He returns focused on contributing in every situation and helping the Ice Flyers compete for a championship. “The Ice Flyers are a successful franchise with many championships,” German said. “I want to do my best to help bring a championship back to the beach” German began playing hockey at the age of five in Canton, Michigan, after his father introduced him and his older brother to the game. The two spent countless hours playing together on the same teams, competing in basement mini-stick battles and roller hockey games in their backyard, helping foster the passion and competitive spirit that shaped German's career. The 2026-27 campaign will mark German’s third season with the Ice Flyers.

ARCHIE GLOVER BOAT RAMP CHANNEL MAINTENANCE COMPLETE The Archie Glover Channel Dredging Project was completed this week, restoring safe access for boaters traveling between Mulatto Bayou and Escambia Bay. Over time, sediment naturally builds up in the channel, making it shallower and more difficult to navigate.

This project removed that buildup by dredging approximately 1,500 feet of the channel to a depth of 5 feet and a width of 30 feet. Crews also installed eight new channel markers to help boaters safely navigate the waterway. In total, about 5,100 cubic yards of sediment were removed with no environmental impacts during construction.

FIRST LADY CASEY DESANTIS ANNOUNCES FIRST-IN-THENATION RESILIENCY EDUCATOR ENDORSEMENT First Lady Casey DeSantis announced the first-in-the-nation opportunity for educators to add the resiliency endorsement to their Florida teacher certificate. The State Board of Education approved the release of the Resiliency Educator Endorsement, a new learning opportunity designed to strengthen educators’ abilities to help students develop the characteristics and life skills needed to overcome challenges and achieve success. The endorsement builds upon the Resiliency Florida initiative spearheaded by First Lady Casey DeSantis, which equips students with the skills needed to overcome life’s challenges, make responsible decisions and become confident, productive citizens. “For several years, the Resiliency Florida initiative has led the nation in reframing the way mental health is taught in schools,” said First Lady Casey DeSantis. “Building upon the eleven resiliency characteristics, we are thrilled to announce the Resiliency Educator Endorsement and continue to empower our educators with the tools they need to instill these important characteristics into young Floridians.” “Thanks to First Lady Casey DeSantis' leadership through the Resiliency Florida initiative, Florida continues to successfully prepare students not only for academic achievement in the classroom but also for success in life,” said Commissioner-Designate Henry Mack. “The Resiliency Educator Endorsement will give teachers access to high-quality professional learning to better support students as they develop the skills to overcome the obstacles within their lives and become more resilient.” “Florida continues to lead the nation by equipping educators with innovative professional learning opportunities,” said Ryan Petty, Chair of the State Board of Education. “The Resiliency Educator Endorsement

empowers teachers with practical strategies to cultivate resilience in the classroom, helping students build the confidence, perseverance and life skills they need to succeed in school and beyond.” The Resiliency Educator Endorsement will be one of 14 endorsements available to Florida educators to add to their certification, further enhancing the abilities of educators to provide a world-class education to students. Through the Resiliency Educator Endorsement, certified educators will gain practical strategies to integrate resiliency into instruction based on Florida’s 11 Resiliency Characteristics. This endorsement complements the over 100 free resources, including ones for teachers and parents, currently available through Resiliency Florida. Educators who complete the required training and satisfy all requirements may add the endorsement to their valid Florida educator certificate. First Lady DeSantis launched the Resiliency Florida initiative in February of 2021 to equip Florida’s youth with the skills to overcome life’s challenges. In March of 2023, the State Board of Education adopted the First Lady’s recommendations for this first-inthe-nation approach on resiliency education designed to impart critical skills in early grades and to support students as they demonstrate those concepts in later grades. The standards embed concepts of civic responsibility through citizenship and mentorship to not only help students understand the value of these ideas, but to actively engage in activities and exercises that will prepare them to be upstanding, responsible citizens. Florida continues to be a national leader in education and its continued focus on resiliency is yet another example of Florida’s commitment to strong students and empowered parents.
