FIRST FRIDAYS ART WALK

DOWNTOWN’S NEW CREATIVE TRADITION

By Dawn Gresko

T

here’s a new way to explore downtown’s creative side: gallery doors swing open, music drifts onto the sidewalks and artists step out from behind their mediums to greet visitors. Each stop reveals a new collection of paintings, sculptures, photography and handcrafted works waiting to be discovered. That's the vision behind First Fridays Art Walk, a new monthly event bringing residents and visitors together downtown for an evening of creativity, connection and exploration. “It’s more than an art event: it’s an opportunity to connect with the artists, the community and the creativity that make downtown Pensacola so special,” Organizer and Co-Founder of First Fridays Art Walk Gretchen Paux said. “Art is the invitation. Culture is the experience. Creativity is the energy. Connection is the outcome. That’s the heart of First Fridays Art Walk.” Held on the first Friday of every month from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, the free, family-friendly event invites everyone to experience downtown through its galleries, businesses and creative spaces. Guests can wander at their own pace, meet local artists, enjoy live music and discover the unique personalities that make each gallery a destination. Complimentary trolley service makes it easy to hop from one location to the next, encouraging visitors to experi-

ence more of downtown's growing art community in a single evening. While First Fridays Art Walk is a new event, the inspiration behind it has been years in the making. For decades, Blue Morning Gallery has welcomed visitors on the first Friday of each month for featured artist receptions, a tradition that has become a favorite among local art lovers. Inspired by the success of those events, Blue Morning Gallery ceramic artist Gretchen Paux saw an opportunity to expand that experience beyond a single gallery and began discussing the idea with fellow downtown artist and gallery owner, Sarah Soule Webb. “Blue Morning Gallery had been hosting First Fridays for several years thanks to Sue Woodson, Beth Stage and the gallery members,” Paux said. “I approached Sarah Soule Webb with the idea of expanding Blue Morning Gallery’s First Fridays into a collaborative Art Walk that would connect artists, galleries and creative spaces throughout downtown. It quickly became clear that we shared the same vision, and together we set out to bring it to life.” Together, they imagined something bigger: a collaborative event that would shine a spotlight on all of downtown's galleries, in addition to a few participating businesses, while celebrating the artists who help define Pensacola's creative identity. Their vision quickly gained support from the Downtown Improvement Board (DIB), which partnered with the organizers to

help bring the event to life. The monthly Art Walk is also supported by downtown business sponsors whose contributions help fund complimentary trolley service for attendees. Current sponsors include the DIB, Pensacola Title Company and Boyles & Boyles Attorneys-At-Law. The inaugural Art Walk debuted in June, just after the completion of the New Palafox streetscape improvements, inviting visitors to experience downtown's refreshed streets while exploring its flourishing arts scene. The response was immediate, with both residents and visitors embracing the opportunity to spend an evening moving from gallery to gallery, meeting artists and experiencing downtown in a fresh, engaging way. Today, 10 participating galleries and businesses open their doors for the monthly celebration, each offering something uniquely its own. From complimentary refreshments to live music and highlights of different artist works, guests can expect something different at each establishment. Visitors can browse the membercreated works at Blue Morning Gallery, explore the diverse collections at Quayside Art Gallery and Artel Art Gallery, or stop by Sarah Soule Webb Studios to meet one of the event's founders. Artworks Seville, Joe Hobbs Gallery, Reverie Fine Art Collective, Brent Lofts Art Gallery, Noteworthy Gift and Engel & Völkers round out the current lineup, creating a route

that showcases the diversity of artistic talent found throughout downtown. Each location offers its own atmosphere and perspective, from contemporary fine art and photography to ceramics, sculpture, jewelry and mixed-media creations. More importantly, visitors will have the opportunity to meet some of the artists themselves, hear the stories behind the work and experience the creative process firsthand. That personal connection is what sets First Fridays Art Walk apart. Rather than simply viewing artwork on a wall, guests are invited into the creative community itself with one conversation, one gallery and one discovery at a time. Paux and Webb hope even more galleries, studios and creative businesses will join future Art Walks, continuing to strengthen the collaborative spirit that inspired the event from the beginning. The event is open to brick-andmortar businesses located within the downtown district, and must be within a reasonable distance of the complimentary trolley route to ensure the event remains accessible and connected. Participating locations are required to feature handmade art or the work of local artists through exhibitions or artist partnerships. In addition to committing to monthly participation, each location must offer an experience such as live music, an artist demonstration or another interactive activity. The focus is on showcasing permanent galleries, studios and creative

businesses that help define downtown Pensacola’s creative identity year-round. In many ways, First Fridays Art Walk is about more than art. It's about celebrating the people who create it, the businesses that support it and the community that gathers to experience it together. It reflects a downtown where creativity isn't confined to one block or one building: it spills onto sidewalks, fills storefronts and invites everyone to become part of the story. Whether you're an avid collector, a casual art enthusiast or simply looking for a memorable way to spend a Friday evening, First Fridays Art Walk offers the perfect excuse to slow down, explore downtown and see Pensacola through the eyes of the artists who call it home. “One of the most rewarding things has been watching collaboration replace competition,” Paux said. “Galleries and businesses are encouraging visitors to explore beyond their own walls, artists are supporting one another and people are discovering creative spaces they may have never visited otherwise. We’re not just growing an event, we’re building a stronger, more connected arts community.” Follow First Fridays Art Walk on social media for updates on monthly themes, special guests, art shows and exhibits. CITY RECEIVES $9 MILLION STATE GRANT TO SUPPORT SHIPBUILDING INFRASTRUCTURE AT PORT OF PENSACOLA

The Governor’s Job Growth Grant Fund is investing $9 million in the effort to establish Birdon America Inc.’s, Southeastern headquarters in Pensacola. The grant will help support infrastructure and capacity building around the burgeoning shipbuilding presence at the Port of Pensacola. Gov. Ron DeSantis and Florida Commerce Secretary J. Alex Kelly made the announcement in a presentation to Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves at the American Magic High Performance Center on the Port of Pensacola. “There are moments in a city’s history that define trajectory for not just years but for generations, and I certainly think this is one of those days,” Reeves said, noting that Pensacola has had an active deepwater port since 1721. “The maritime industry is more than part of our history; it is part of our DNA,” Reeves said. “I thank Gov. Ron DeSantis for believing in Pensacola’s maritime future, for his commitment to infrastructure, high-wage job creation and Florida’s working waterfront. This grant is a massive vote of confidence in Pensacola.” “I’m excited, I think everyone here should be excited,” DeSantis said. “This is going to continue the momentum. It'll be really good.” The jobs created from this investment could draw former military personnel leaving installations in Pensacola and the region, DeSantis said, to be recruited to Birdon and Birdon-related jobs, strengthening the local economy and supporting U.S. military interests through the production of critical modules for ships and submarines. “If you do the right things on job training and workforce development leading into that pipeline, it’s going to be a natural fit,” he said. The Birdon project would transform the Port of Pensacola and fuel the creation of 2,000 jobs with 1,437 jobs at an average salary of $68,000 annually and 563 jobs at an average salary of $112,000. It would become the largest job creation project in the city’s history. Adding Birdon to the Port’s portfolio alongside American Magic High Performance Center is further evidence of the City’s growing footprint as a home for maritime innovation, helping to fuel a new economic age for Pensacola and adding a new chapter to the City’s long relationship with the U.S. military. “By investing in this project, supporting our local and regional partners, and adding capacity to Florida’s overall industrial base, we are strengthening Florida’s growing maritime economy and doing our part to enhance our nation’s security,” Kelly said. Next Steps The Birdon project also is moving through the Triumph Gulf Coast grant process and

is on tap to receive a $76 million grant from the nonprofit corporation created to manage funds recovered for economic damages from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Reeves said the City hopes to bring to the final grant agreement to the Triumph Board later this summer. “Creating these high-wage, high-quality manufacturing jobs for our residents provides lasting opportunity to build a life, build a family and build a future in Pensacola,” Reeves said. The total project cost is $275 million, with contributions for the project also expected from Triumph, U.S. Department of Commerce ($33 million) and Birdon ($152 million). Project Details Triumph funding will be used for construction costs associated with two new shipbuilding facilities at the port. The $105 million construction program includes a Phase 1 panel line and module fabrication warehouse and a Phase 2 assembly bay, together housing advanced ship manufacturing and office space. The City will retain ownership of the facilities as public infrastructure and will enter into a long-term ground lease with Birdon America Inc. for its use. Established in 1977, Birdon is a globally established maritime engineering and shipbuilding company with over 15 years of proven performance delivering major defense contracts for the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps and allied defense forces worldwide. The new facility will be able to produce complex Navy ship modules for Tier 1 yards, submarine modules, and complete surface vessels up to 400 feet, directly supporting the federal objective of restoring America’s maritime dominance and expanding the U.S. maritime industrial base. The overall goal is to catalyze a broader maritime and defense cluster, attract suppliers, and leverage partnerships with the University of West Florida’s WAVE Center, Pensacola State College and the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition to create a sustained talent pipeline and applied research ecosystem. That focus on building out the talent pipeline also dovetails with the City’s investment in the aerospace industry with the ST Engineering facility at Pensacola International Airport. Pensacola State College broke ground on a $16 million, 34,000-square-foot Aviation Airframe and Powerplant Mechanics facility at the airport. Hangar 3 for the ST project was substantially complete this summer and Hangar 4 will begin construction later this year and will be completed by late summer 2027.

The goal is to connect residents with essential services and resources, while helping them transition into permanent housing and the next chapter of their lives. REAP is one of two nonprofits selected by the City of Pensacola in 2025 to receive funding through the American Rescue Plan Act, part of a $1 million investment to expand shelter access and life-changing services across Pensacola. NATIONAL MARITIME MUSEUM OF THE GULF TO OPEN PERMANENT JIMMY BUFFETT: SON OF A SON OF A SAILOR EXPERIENCE IN MOBILE, ALABAMA The National Maritime Museum of the Gulf will open the doors to the Jimmy Buffett: Son of a Son of a Sailor Experience on September 12, 2026, inviting visitors into the life, music and Gulf Coast spirit of one of the region’s most influential icons. More than a traditional museum exhibit, the permanent installation spans 6,000 square feet and combines a gallery of rare artifacts with an immersive concert experience designed to bring visitors closer to the man behind the music. The exhibition explores Buffett not only as a musician, but as an author, sailor, pilot, entrepreneur, adventurer, philanthropist, friend and storyteller whose influence extended far beyond music. The experience features more than 130 artifacts from Buffett’s life, many of which have never been publicly exhibited. Highlights from the collection include: • Buffett’s 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame statue • His 12-string Martin guitar, used to write and perform Son of a Son of a Sailor • Handwritten lyrics and other personal papers from throughout his career • Never-before-released concert and recording footage • Personal photographs, scrapbooks and memorabilia offering an intimate look at his life • A recreation of Shrimp Boat Sound, Buffett’s Key West recording studio, featuring personal items from the original space • Exclusive interviews with family members, bandmates, crew members, friends, fishing buddies, boat builders, producers, authors, musicians and business associates who knew Buffett throughout his life Inside the Research Behind the Exhibition The experience draws on extensive archival research, personal collections and firsthand accounts gathered by the museum team. Together, these materials offer a broader look at Buffett’s life beyond his music, including his Gulf Coast roots, family, maritime interests, business ventures, writing and the people and places that shaped him. “Creating the Jimmy Buffett Experience has been an absolute honor for our entire team. We have spent nearly two years listening, researching, collecting stories, curating artifacts and working to capture the remarkable life of a man who meant so much to so many people,” shared Karen Poth, Executive Director of the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf. “We didn’t get far into this project before we realized this exhibition will never be a finished story. It is a living exhibit. And it will continue to change and grow as new stories are shared, new artifacts come to light, and we learn more about Jimmy and the world he created. Opening the doors on September 12 is not the end of this journey; it is the beginning.”

The result is an exhibition that offers visitors a deeper and more personal understanding of Jimmy Buffett and the life behind the music. Jimmy Buffett’s Gulf Coast Roots Buffett’s connection to the Gulf Coast was central to his life and work. He grew up in Mobile, where his family had deep ties to the maritime industry, and the region remained a constant presence throughout his career. The National Maritime Museum of the Gulf is located on Mobile’s waterfront, across the Mobile River from the area where Buffett’s parents worked at Alabama Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Co. The museum also preserves artifacts connected to his grandfather’s maritime history, creating a direct connection between the exhibition and the Buffett family’s Gulf Coast and maritime heritage. The experience explores these connections through artifacts, photographs, film, and firsthand accounts, giving visitors a closer look at Buffett’s relationship with Mobile, the Gulf Coast and the maritime world. Opening Weekend The Jimmy Buffett: Son of a Son of a Sailor Experience will open to the public on Saturday, September 12, 2026. Opening weekend begins September 11 with Margaritas and Memories, featuring Mac McAnally and Scotty Emerick at the historic Saenger Theater, followed by the grand opening and unveiling of a new larger-than-life bronze Jimmy Buffett sculpture on September 12. Additional events will include live music and a nautical-inspired mural festival in Cooper Riverside Park. Advance tickets are currently available and include admission to both the Jimmy Buffett: Son of a Son of a Sailor Experience and the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf. About the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf The National Maritime Museum of the Gulf is dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich maritime history, culture, environment and economic importance of the Gulf of America. The idea for the museum began in the 1990s as part of an effort to revitalize Mobile’s waterfront and create a world-class educational attraction. After years of planning, fundraising and construction, the museum opened in 2015 as GulfQuest the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf of Mexico. Housed in an iconic, life-sized replica of a container ship, the museum offers more than 80 immersive exhibits and interactive experiences that explore everything from shipbuilding and maritime commerce to marine science, shipwrecks, navigation, fishing, hurricanes and the people whose lives are connected to the Gulf. Today, the museum serves as both a cultural institution and an educational resource, inspiring visitors of all ages to better understand, appreciate, and protect the Gulf and its enduring role in our region and the world.

The new platform combines the former FFL Plant Guide, Bee Gardens and Butterfly Gardens apps into a single resource for selecting plants that support pollinators, conserve water, and protect Florida’s ecosystems. “Great landscapes begin with informed plant choices,” said Claire Lewis, director of the Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Program. “The FFL Plants & Pollinators App empowers Floridians to select plants that are beautiful, functional and environmentally responsible while supporting wildlife, conserving water, and creating healthier communities.” Available across web and mobile platforms, the FFL Plants & Pollinators App provides science-based tools and information for homeowners, landscape professionals, educators, UF/IFAS Extension agents and gardening enthusiasts. New features include: • A Guided Plant Search that recommends plants based on site conditions such as sun exposure, soil moisture, hardiness zone and wildlife goals.

• Enhanced plant filters and expanded plant profiles featuring wildlife benefits, pollinator value, toxicity information, growing requirements and thousands of plant images. • Integrated bee and butterfly resources, including host plant information, nectar sources, pollinator profiles and gardening tips. • A customizable My Lists feature that allows users to save, organize, export, and share plant selections for landscape projects and educational programs • Information on invasive plants and Florida-Friendly alternatives to help users make environmentally responsible landscape choices. The app supports the Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Program’s mission to help residents make informed decisions to create attractive, sustainable landscapes that protect Florida’s natural resources by bringing plant, pollinator and educational resources together in one place. “We wanted to make it easier for people to understand not only which plants will thrive in their landscape, but also how those plants contribute to the larger ecosystem,” said Tom Wichman, Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Program assistant director and horticulturist. “The FFL Plants & Pollinators App helps connect plant selection with successful environmental outcomes.”

BALLET PENSACOLA NAMES BIANCA VILLEGAS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Ballet Pensacola is pleased to announce the appointment of Bianca Villegas as Executive Director, ushering in a new chapter of organizational leadership as Ballet Pensacola enters its 48th season and begins building toward its 50th Anniversary. Bianca steps into the role with a deeply established relationship with Ballet Pensacola and a strong understanding of the organization from the perspectives of leadership, governance, advocacy and community engagement. She has supported Ballet Pensacola nearing a decade as a volunteer and has served on its Board of Directors in recent years, including leadership in development and organizational advancement. As Executive Director, Bianca will work in close partnership with Ballet Pensacola’s Board of Directors, Company Director Veronica Ramirez, Academy Director Debi Janea, and the organization’s artistic and administrative leadership. Her focus will include organizational strategy and sustainability, fundraising and development, institutional and community partnerships, marketing and communications, donor and sponsor engagement and strengthening Ballet Pensacola’s presence and impact throughout the region. “Ballet Pensacola has been part of my life for many years, and I have had the privilege of seeing firsthand the extraordinary commitment required to build an organization of this caliber,” said Bianca. “There is tremendous strength in what already exists here in our artists, our Academy, our leadership, our Board, our families, and in the community that has sustained Ballet Pensacola for nearly five decades. As we approach our 50th Anniversary, my responsibility is both to honor that legacy and help position Ballet Pensacola for what comes next. The most enduring organizations are shaped by a shared sense of purpose, strengthened through meaningful collaboration, and distinguished by an uncompromising pursuit of excellence. Together, we have an extraordinary opportunity to deepen our impact, expand our reach and ensure Ballet Pensacola remains a vital part of the cultural landscape of our region for many years to come.” Bianca brings a multidisciplinary background spanning nonprofit leadership, development and fundraising, strategic planning, community engagement, communications, board governance and the arts. Her experience includes leadership within nonprofit and civic organizations in the Pensacola community, where she has worked to cultivate partnerships, strengthen community investment, and advance mission-driven initiatives. Her connection to the arts extends beyond organizational leadership. Bianca pursued arts higher education in Madrid and London, receiving formal foundation certification in London and a BA in Madrid. Her professional experience has also included work with luxury lifestyle publications locally and in the Washington, D.C. area, further developing her expertise in communications, brand positioning, relationship building and community engagement. That combination of artistic perspective, nonprofit leadership and longstanding

institutional knowledge will inform Bianca’s approach to leading Ballet Pensacola. Central to that approach is a commitment to collaborative leadership and to supporting the expertise already present within the organization. Bianca will work closely with Veronica Ramirez and the artistic team in advancing the vision and continued development of the professional company, while partnering with Debi Janea to support the continued momentum of strength and growth of the Ballet Pensacola Academy. The Academy has experienced record participation and expanding programming in recent seasons, including Ballet Pensacola’s acceptance into Regional Dance America - Southeast (RDA - SE). Together with the professional company, these programs strengthen a distinctive continuum of dance education, artistic development and professional performance within the organization. Ballet Pensacola currently supports an 19-member professional company of dancers from around the country and the world, and an Academy serving approximately 350 students, while presenting professional productions, educational opportunities and community outreach throughout Northwest Florida. Bianca’s appointment comes at a significant point in Ballet Pensacola’s history. Founded in 1978 by Italian-trained dancer and teacher Gioia Michelotti as Kaleidoscope Dance Theatre, the organization has grown from its beginnings as a performance opportunity for young dancers into a professional ballet company and Academy with a nearly five-decade legacy of dance education and performance. As Ballet Pensacola moves toward its 50th Anniversary, Bianca and the organization’s leadership will focus not only on commemorating that history, but on establishing the strategic, financial, artistic and community foundation necessary for its next era. “Our 50th Anniversary gives us an opportunity to look back with tremendous gratitude, but it also asks us to look forward with purpose,” said Bianca. “The legacy of Ballet Pensacola belongs to every dancer, teacher, artistic leader, Board member, family, donor, volunteer and audience member who has helped bring us here. Our work now is to build upon that legacy with intention and create an organization prepared to thrive for the next 50 years and beyond.” About Ballet Pensacola Founded in 1978, Ballet Pensacola enhances the cultural life of the community by developing an appreciation and knowledge of dance through quality dance performances and exceptional dance training. Through its professional company, Academy, educational programming, and community outreach, Ballet Pensacola provides exceptional opportunities for professional artists and developing dancers while bringing the artistry, discipline and transformative power of dance to audiences throughout the region. As Ballet Pensacola enters its 48th season, the organization continues to build upon nearly five decades of artistic excellence while looking ahead to its milestone 50th Anniversary.

MCPON, OMBUDSMAN-AT-LARGE ENGAGE SAILORS AND FAMILIES DURING FLORIDA FLEET VISIT

BRITT LANDRUM CHAMPIONS MENTAL HEALTH THROUGH MOVEMENT AND COMMUNITY

Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) John Perryman and Ombudsmanat-Large Angie Perryman concluded a fourday fleet engagement across Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola and Naval Air Station (NAS) Key West Aug. 6. While MCPON focused on operational readiness through engagements with Sailors, students, instructors and command leadership, the Ombudsman-at-Large met with support professionals to better understand the programs and services that contribute to family readiness. Together, the engagements provided a broader look at conditions affecting Sailors and families at two installations with very different missions and challenges. "The purpose of this visit is simple: to spend time with Sailors and their families, hear their perspectives firsthand, and better understand what they're experiencing,” said MCPON Perryman. “Those conversations are invaluable because they help ensure our efforts remain focused on building ready Sailors, supporting ready families, and maintaining a ready Fleet." Pensacola served as the first stop, where MCPON Perryman met with leaders across the training pipeline responsible for developing the Fleet’s next generation of warfighters. He examined how technical training, professional standards and physical readiness prepare Sailors for the demands of operational service. Discussions with Naval Education and Training Command and Center for Information Warfare Training leadership focused on continued investment in technical training and development for Sailors. He also addressed student Sailors during an all-hands call, met with installation and tenant command leadership, toured barracks, family housing and support facilities, and participated in small-group discussions with Morale, Welfare and Recreation staff. The engagement concluded in Key West, where conversations shifted from preparing Sailors for the Fleet to sustaining them throughout operational service.

For Britt Landrum III, supporting mental health has been a lifelong commitment shaped by family and personal conviction. As CEO of Landrum, Britt’s support of Lakeview Center builds on a connection that stretches back generations. His father, Britt Landrum Jr., has been a long-time Lakeview board member, making the organization a familiar presence throughout Britt’s life. “Growing up in Pensacola, I've known about Lakeview my whole life,” he said. “It’s a staple in the community.” Today, Britt is helping advocate for mental health in Pensacola through the Landrum 5K benefiting Lakeview Center. Turning awareness into action While Landrum has supported many community causes over the years, mental health has become one of Britt's greatest passions. “Everybody either struggles or has a close family member that struggles with mental health,” he said. “My focus is to generate awareness and make it less of a stigma. The link between mental and physical health is critical.” That belief inspired the Landrum 5K, an event designed to encourage movement, promote wellness and support mental health services across Northwest Florida. “A big step toward improving mental health, no matter what you’re struggling with or what your family members are struggling with, is physical exercise,” he said. “If we can get people moving, that’s a start.” The power of movement A lifelong athlete, Britt played multiple sports growing up before becoming an avid triathlete and IRONMAN® competitor. He credits exercise with helping him navigate life’s challenges and maintain perspective through stressful seasons. “I know from personal experience how much exercise has changed my life,” he said.

The Fleet visit concluded in Key West, shifting the focus from preparing Sailors for the Fleet to the conditions that sustain them throughout operational service. “In Pensacola, we saw Sailors in the training pipeline building the skills and confidence they’ll carry throughout their careers,” said MCPON Perryman. “In Key West, we saw what it takes for our Sailors and families to live and serve in a remote location while supporting the Fleet every day. My goal is to listen, learn and better understand how we can continue removing barriers, supporting our Sailors and families and strengthening readiness at every stage of that journey." Throughout the visits, the Ombudsmanat-Large met with command Ombudsmen, Fleet and Family Support Center personnel, Child Development Center staff, NavyMarine Corps Relief Society representatives, housing professionals and other installation partners to better understand how families access support, where gaps remain and how effectively information is reaching them. Families raised concerns about housing affordability and conditions, cost of living, childcare, permanent change of station challenges and sponsor programs. In Key West, discussions also examined how the installation’s geographic isolation affects access to services and resources, particularly during hurricane season. The conversations highlighted the importance of strong command-family communication and ensuring families know where to turn before challenges become crises. “Service is a family commitment, and families today look different for everyone,” said Angie Perryman. “Every deployment, every move and every challenge is a shared experience. Whether it’s a spouse, parent, child or someone else standing behind our Sailors, making sure they have the support they need is part of taking care of our Sailors.” The perspectives gathered in Pensacola and Key West will help inform continued discussions with Navy leadership on the policies, programs and resources affecting Sailors and families across the Fleet.

PLAY PENSACOLA CELEBRATES SUCCESSFUL 2026 SUMMER DAY CAMP SEASON Pensacola Parks and Recreation recently wrapped up another exciting season at Play Pensacola Summer Day Camp, concluding a summer filled with recreation, hands-on learning, new experiences and opportunities for local youth to learn, play and grow. The 2026 Play Pensacola Summer Day Camp welcomed children ages 5-12 at E.S. Cobb Resource Center, Gull Point Resource Center and Woodland Heights Resource Center. Throughout the summer, campers participated in a variety of structured activities designed to keep them active, engaged and learning while school was out. From STEM experiments and educational activities to arts and crafts, sports, swimming and field trips, each week brought something new for campers to experience. Programming was designed to combine traditional summer fun with opportunities for children to explore new interests, build friendships and continue developing skills outside of the classroom. “Summer camp is about so much more than giving kids something to do while school is out,” Parks and Recreation Director Tonya Byrd said. “We want every child who walks through our doors to have an opportunity to try something new, make friends, and stay active while school is out. Our staff and community partners put an incredible amount of work into creating those experiences, and seeing our campers excited to come back each day is what makes the summer so rewarding.” Play Pensacola Summer Day Camp was supported by recreation staff who spent the summer leading activities, supervising campers and creating welcoming environments where children could safely learn and play. Through structured programming and smallgroup activities, staff worked to ensure campers remained engaged throughout the summer while encouraging teamwork, creativity, confidence and positive social development.

Community Submission

From June 1 to July 31, Play Pensacola Summer Camp served 219 children across three locations. Thanks to Parks and Recreation’s department-funded scholarship program, 87 children received discounted summer camp fees, providing a lower-cost option for families in need. Field Trips included: Fort Pickens, Gulf Breeze Zoo, Dreamland Skate Center, Fast Eddie’s Fun Center, Chuck-E-Cheese, Strikerz Entertainment Center and weekly visits to Cecil Hunter or Roger Scott Pool. Community partnerships also played an important role in expanding opportunities for campers this summer. Participants received special visits from community and business partners including Hancock Whitney Bank, McKim and Creed Engineering, Pensacola and Perdido Bay Estuary Program, West Florida Public Library, Pensacola Police Department K9 Unit, Escambia County Sherrif K9 Unit, University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Extension Office, HerCode, Milan Magic School and The Itty Bitty Petting Zoo. Although summer camp has ended, Pensacola Parks and Recreation’s AfterSchool Program continues throughout the school year at Cobb, Gull Point and Woodland Heights Resource Centers. The program serves children ages 5-12, Monday through Friday from 2-6 pm, with homework assistance, academic enrichment, recreation, STEAM activities and more. Weekly fees start at $55, with free care available to up to 175 eligible participants through a partnership with Escambia Children’s Trust. Pensacola Parks and Recreation thanks the families who entrusted us with their children this summer, along with the staff, community organizations and partners who helped make the 2026 Summer Camp season possible.

“When you’re struggling with mental health, you have to get everything on your side.” During the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, Britt leaned even further into endurance training as a positive outlet. That experience reinforced his belief that exercise can be a powerful tool for improving mental well-being. Still, he understands that simply taking the first step can be difficult. “If you can get over that hump, exercise is a game changer,” he said. Encouraging people to seek help As a business leader, Britt frequently sees the pressures people carry behind the scenes. His message is simple: don’t be afraid to ask for help. “People need an independent third-party professional to help guide them,” he said. “I know that’s made me a much better version of myself.” He hopes that by talking openly about mental health and supporting organizations like Lakeview Center, more people will feel empowered to seek the care and support they need. A race with purpose Now entering its fourth year, the Landrum 5K continues to bring together local businesses, families and community members in support of mental health care. “I hope the 5K continues to grow,” Britt said. “It’s a great race for a great cause. We’ve got good organizers, and we make it a fun event for the whole family.” His support comes back to a belief that mental health touches all of us. “You never know what somebody’s struggling with,” he said. “If we’re all a little more tolerant and keep mental health at the top of our minds, the world will be a better place.” Join Britt and Landrum in supporting mental health care across Northwest Florida by participating in the Landrum 5K or making a gift to Lakeview Center today.

ICE FLYERS SIGN FORWARD ALEX DAMESKI FOR 2026-27 SEASON The Pensacola Ice Flyers announced today that the team has signed forward Alexander Dameski for the 2026–27 season. Dameski begins his professional career after an outstanding four-year collegiate career at SUNY-Geneseo, where he established himself as one of the top offensive players in NCAA Division III hockey. During the 2025–26 season, the Oakville, Ontario native served as a team captain and recorded 21 goals and 16 assists for 37 points in 26 games, earning both UCHC Player of the Year and Empire 8 Player of the Year honors. He also finished among the national leaders in goals and game-winning goals while helping lead the Knights to another successful season. "Alex was the captain at a successful Geneseo program where winning was expected every season. He's a player who competes hard, plays with confidence, and has the ability to impact the game in multiple ways," said Head Coach Jeremy Gates. "He has ability to score and is relentless to get the opportunities to shoot. We’re excited to see him take the next step in his career and believe he'll be a great fit for our culture."

The 6-foot, right winger concluded his collegiate career with 59 goals and 39 assists for 98 points in 108 games, serving as a leader both on and off the ice for the Knights. In addition to his offensive production, Dameski earned All-Conference recognition and was recognized for his academic achievements throughout his time at Geneseo. Prior to attending SUNY-Geneseo, Dameski developed his game in the NCDC with the Jersey Hitmen, where he established himself as a skilled, hardworking forward capable of contributing in every situation before making the jump to the collegiate ranks. "The Ice Flyers are a strong program that strives to help players reach their highest potential as possible with the utmost support from the staff." said Dameski. "My goal this season is to help the team have as much success as possible, and to win as many games as possible." The 2026–27 season will mark Dameski's first professional campaign as he looks to bring his scoring ability, leadership and championship mindset to Pensacola's forward group.
