GROWING CONNECTIONS EMERALD COAST PLANT LIBRARIES FLOURISH ACROSS NORTHWEST FLORIDA

By Morgan Cole

H

ouseplants and gardening have blossomed into more than just hobbies — they've become a way for people to connect with nature and one another. Across Northwest Florida, a growing network of community plant libraries is making it easier than ever for gardeners to share cuttings, discover new varieties and build connections rooted in a shared love of growing things. At first glance, they might look like ordinary little wooden boxes tucked outside a neighborhood home or local business. Inside, you’ll find shelves stocked with houseplant cuttings, outdoor plants, vegetable seedlings, flower seeds and even the occasional gardening book, all free for anyone to take or share. Think of them as the plant world's version of a Little Free Library. Instead of borrowing books, visitors exchange plants, seeds and gardening supplies, creating a community resource that grows through generosity. Whether you're an experienced plant parent with more propagations than windowsill space or you're bringing home your very first pothos, these neighborhood libraries offer an easy, completely free way to discover something new while sharing what you've already grown with fellow gardeners. One visit might inspire you to leave behind a baby spider plant for another plant lover to find. The next could introduce you to a cutting you've been searching for, or even another local gardener browsing the shelves. At a time when so much of life happens online, these little libraries create opportunities for neighbors to connect the oldfashioned way, one plant at a time. That spirit of sharing continues through the Emerald Coast

Plant Libraries, a grassroots effort launched by local plant enthusiast Angela Blake in May 2021. What began as a single free plant-sharing station has since grown into a network of community plant libraries scattered throughout Northwest Florida, each maintained by volunteers who believe plants are meant to be shared. Blake said the idea began to take shape during the COVID19 pandemic, when houseplants surged in popularity and many people were searching for meaningful ways to connect. "It was a time when we were so divided, we needed community more than ever," Blake said. "I knew people had a surplus of certain plants and were hoping for other plants, and I knew this was a great community to share resources." After discovering a successful community plant library in Tallahassee, Blake decided to bring the concept home, never expecting it to grow so quickly. The response was immediate. By the end of its opening weekend, that first library had inspired two more, and within just a few months, the idea had taken root in more than 20 neighborhoods across Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. Today, more than 30 active plant libraries continue the tradition of sharing throughout Northwest Florida. The movement extends well beyond the libraries themselves. Over the years, the Emerald Coast Plant Libraries Facebook group has grown into a thriving online community where members post photos of their latest finds, announce freshly stocked libraries, trade gardening tips and organize local plant swaps. It's also a place where newcomers can ask questions, identify mystery cuttings and find encouragement from experienced gardeners.

While Blake has since stepped away from leading the organization to focus on other professional and personal goals, the community she helped build continues to thrive under the leadership of longtime volunteer James Brewster-Rogers, who now oversees the Emerald Coast Plant Libraries Facebook group and helps coordinate the network of community plant libraries throughout Northwest Florida. For Blake, however, the libraries have always been about more than exchanging plants. “It brings people together,” Blake said. “I heard countless stories of hosts tending to the stands and a visitor arriving, and they struck up a conversation and made new friends. Some of them remain very close friends even to this day.” For anyone looking to visit a plant library for the first time, the Emerald Coast Plant Libraries Facebook group is the best place to start. A pinned post features a running list of active library locations throughout the region, while members regularly share photos of newly stocked shelves so visitors can see what’s available before heading out. What keeps these libraries thriving isn’t a long list of rules, it’s the simple understanding that everyone has something to share. Visitors are welcome to take what they need and, whenever possible, leave behind plants, seeds or gardening supplies for someone else to enjoy. That simple exchange helps keep the shelves stocked and the libraries growing right alongside the communities they serve. A few simple courtesies help make the experience enjoyable for everyone. Visitors are encouraged to take only what they'll realistically care for, leaving plenty for others to enjoy. Donations should be healthy, pest-free and, whenever possible, clearly labeled so new plant

parents know exactly what they're bringing home. Seeds are best packaged in labeled envelopes, and most library hosts ask that invasive species or diseased plants not be left behind. Blake also encourages visitors to be mindful of the private properties where many libraries are located by respecting yards, driveways and landscaping while they browse. If you happen to stop by and find empty shelves, don't assume the library has been abandoned. Many are restocked throughout the week as volunteers and neighbors drop off fresh cuttings after pruning houseplants, dividing perennials or collecting seeds from their gardens. One visit may offer only a few options, while the next could reveal an entirely new selection. The idea of free, accessible gardening resources extends beyond plant libraries. For those looking to start a vegetable garden, grow fresh herbs or add more flowers to their landscape, the West Florida Public Libraries (WFPL) system offers another opportunity to get growing. Branch locations throughout Escambia County now offer Community Seed Libraries, where visitors can check out up to five packets of seeds at no cost. There are no due dates, late fees or returns required. Instead, the program encourages residents to grow their own food, support pollinators and experience gardening, regardless of experience or budget. Seed selections vary throughout the year but often include vegetables, herbs, flowers and native plants well suited to the Gulf Coast climate. Gardeners who successfully harvest seeds from their own plants are encouraged to donate extras back to the collection, helping the program continue to grow season after season.

Together, these community plant libraries and public seed libraries are making gardening more affordable, accessible and community-focused. Whether you're bringing home your first cutting, discovering a new heirloom tomato variety or sharing seeds saved from your own garden, these free resources make it easy to grow your garden while connecting with others along the way. Five years after launching the first plant library, Blake says the project's greatest success isn't the number of locations or the thousands of plants that have changed hands, it's the community that has grown around them. "It's taught me so much about people, human nature, and it's reminded me how wonderful people are despite our many differences," Blake said. "It is a beautiful story of community and grassroots origins turned into something that's been able to be maintained for five years now." That spirit of generosity continues to thrive through the volunteers, library hosts and gardeners who keep the shelves stocked and support one another in ways that often extend well beyond sharing plants. "We see some incredible acts of people helping each other either with resources, plants or even cleaning up people's yards," Blake said. "It's been a wonderful community project, and I'm eternally grateful to James for keeping the group so well maintained. He's definitely put in a lot of time and dedication." To learn more about Emerald Coast Plant Libraries, follow the group's Facebook page, where members regularly post newly stocked locations, upcoming plant swaps and gardening tips. You'll also find a pinned post with a map of active plant libraries throughout Northwest Florida, making it simple to locate one nearby.■

NORTH HILL TOUR OF HOMES RETURNS NOVEMBER 29, ITS FIRST IN MORE THAN A DECADE For the first time in more than ten years, Pensacola's North Hill Historic District will open its most celebrated homes to the public. The North Hill Tour of Homes returns Sunday, November 29, 2026, from noon to 5:00 pm, pairing docent-led visits inside six landmark residences with a Christmas Market at Alabama Square. Tickets are on sale now at historicnorthhill.com/tour-of-homes. The six homes span a remarkable range of American architecture, and no two are alike. The tour reaches from the 1899 Queen Anne that neighbors called the Spring Mansion, through the Classical Revival, English Cottage Revival, Colonial, and Mediterranean styles of the 1910s and 1920s, to a 1953 midcentury masterwork by the celebrated modernist Paul Rudolph, crowned with a dramatic butterfly roof. Every home has a story. Each front door opens onto another time, and docents will introduce the people who lived there: the department store magnate whose family compound once filled a city block, the granddaughter of one of Pensacola's earliest Spanish families who raised eleven children under one roof, the 1928 bridge teas that made the society pages, and a Mardi Gras king whose New Year's Eve brush with a jewel thief is worthy of a movie. On the Sunday after Thanksgiving, the holiday season for Pensacola begins in

North Hill. Guests can begin the tour at any of the six homes, move between them at their own pace, on foot beneath the live oaks or aboard a complimentary trolley, and finish at Alabama Square, where the Christmas Market gathers local artisans, vendors, food and music in the neighborhood park. “The Tour of Homes is a beloved North Hill tradition. Bringing it back after all these years is a joy for everyone involved," said Jennifer Wasilenko, president of the North Hill Preservation Association. "These homes hold so much of Pensacola's history, and those stories are meant to be shared. We are proud to open the doors, put up the garlands and welcome our neighbors in for an unforgettable holiday experience.” Admission is for adults 18 and older. Early bird tickets are $30 through August 31, rising to $50 as tour day approaches. Every ticket supports the association's year-round work preserving the architecture and character of one of Florida's largest historic districts. About the North Hill Preservation Association The North Hill Preservation Association is a volunteer-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to the preservation and restoration of the unique architecture and landscape of Pensacola's North Hill Historic District, and to education and research that keep the neighborhood's story alive for future generations.

GOVERNOR RON DESANTIS HIGHLIGHTS FLORIDA'S ONE-OFA-KIND FACILITY TO ADVANCE THE FUTURE OF TRANSPORTATION Today, Governor Ron DeSantis highlighted SunTrax, Florida’s premier, nationleading facility for research and development of emerging transportation technologies and innovations. Located along the Interstate 4 (I-4) corridor in Polk County, the 775-acre SunTrax campus, which was initially built to test connected and autonomous vehicle (CAV) technologies, has now expanded to also include air technology. This new expansion was purpose-built to help with the safe and innovative development of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) technology, or “flying cars”. AAM will offer a brand-new transportation option to Florida’s communities that will relieve congestion and restore regional air services in the state. With this resource, Florida expects to host a series of AAM test flights by the end of the year. "Great to be at the SunTrax Testing Grounds in Auburndale today to highlight Florida’s leadership in the future of transportation," said Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. " By the end of this year, Florida will be actively testing electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, while SunTrax Air Ground is actively testing and supporting the deployment of autonomous and connected vehicles. I was also proud to announce that FDOT is partnering with Embry Riddle and Polk State to help Florida students prepare for exciting career opportunities in the next generation of transportation. Florida has the innovationfriendly policies, the universities and research institutions, the infrastructure and forthcoming infrastructure investments, and the talent needed to become the premier location for emerging transportation technology.” “SunTrax and Florida’s strategic plan to take highways to the sky are prime examples of why Florida remains a global leader in transportation,” said Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Jared W. Perdue, P.E. “As our state continues to grow and transportation needs increase, AAM will be a great addition to Florida’s world-class transportation portfolio that serves and benefits all travelers.” “Polk State College is pleased to be a lead partner with FDOT in supporting workforce development and preparing the next generation of professionals for the future of aviation,” said Polk State College President Anastasios Kamoutsas. “Florida’s strategic investments in advanced air mobility and autonomous vehicles will help create high-paying jobs while building the skilled workforce needed to support this emerging industry. SunTrax provides an invaluable resource for handson training and research, giving our students rare opportunities to gain experience with cutting-edge technology right here in Polk County. This partnership will help position our students for success while driving innovation and economic growth throughout the region and across Florida.” As the governor announced today, by the end of this year, SunTrax Air Ground will be actively testing electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft throughout the Central Florida aerospace region. SunTrax Air was purpose-built to support the safe and innovative development of Advanced Air Mobility, and is home to the nation’s first dedicated AAM Aerial Test Track. The facility

provides companies with a controlled environment to test aircraft and communications technology under real-world conditions, while additional tenant hangars will provide opportunities for research, light manufacturing and final assembly. AAM has the potential to provide new transportation options for passenger air taxis, cargo delivery, medical transportation and emergency response. Florida was also specially selected to lead the development of safety and operational policies for eVTOL and AAM technology through the Federal Aviation Administration's electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) and AAM Integration Pilot Program (eIPP). Cutting-edge research supporting Florida’s participation in the national initiative is being conducted by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. At the same time, SunTrax Air Ground is actively testing and supporting the deployment of autonomous and connected vehicles on Florida’s transportation system. SunTrax provides companies with a controlled, realworld testing environment, including the only high-speed autonomous test track in the Southeastern United States, along with simulated weather conditions, urban environments, pedestrian crossings, roadway inclines and other scenarios that allow emerging technologies to be tested before broader deployment. That technology is already moving beyond the test track. Waymo, a leader in fully autonomous ride-hailing, has provided hundreds of thousands of trips in Florida. Residents and visitors in Miami and Orlando can already use Waymo for fully autonomous rides, and the company has expanded its Florida operations to include autonomous highway driving across South Florida. Waymo is also preparing to expand into Tampa, where it has completed mapping, begun rider-only testing and conducted hands-on safety training with local emergency personnel, with commercial service expected to launch this fall. Waymo works directly with FDOT, local law enforcement and first responders to support the safe integration of autonomous vehicles into Florida’s transportation network. As these technologies move from development and testing toward deployment, Florida is also preparing the workforce needed to operate them. FDOT is partnering with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and Polk State College to develop training and credentialing opportunities for the next generation of pilots, maintenance technicians, engineers and other transportation professionals. These partnerships will help ensure Florida has the skilled personnel needed to test, maintain and operate advanced transportation technology as the industry continues to grow. These unique resources found only in Florida further demonstrate the state’s position as a national leader in transportation. The cutting-edge research and testing at SunTrax will keep our state’s transportation system on the forefront of innovation, help ease congestion with new travel options, strengthen the state’s supply chain and support a safe and efficient travel experience for Florida’s residents and visitors.

PENSACOLA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT EARNS FEDERAL GRANT FOR NEW K-9 A federal grant will help Pensacola International Airport acquire a new explosives detection K-9. The City of Pensacola has been awarded $15,395 through the Fiscal Year 2025 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program to acquire and deploy the specially trained dog. The K-9 will be stationed at the Airport and handled by a Pensacola Police Department officer. Having a dedicated explosives detection team on site will enhance the airport’s existing security measures, support a faster response to unattended items and other potential concerns, and help minimize disruptions for passengers and airport operations. “Safety is at the heart of everything we do,” Airport Executive Director Matt Coughlin said, “After the sudden and unexpected loss of our beloved K-9 Jett, (U.S.) Senator (Ashley) Moody’s staff reached out to us and presented this opportunity through the DOJ’s grant program. Their help in our attempt to not only reconstitute K9 Jett’s tradecraft but to remain steadfast to his

legacy was heartfelt. We are incredibly grateful to Ann Sharpsteen and Senator Moody for supporting this team effort to bring such a valuable resource to the Airport.” Grant funding will support the purchase of a canine specifically bred and trained for explosives detection, along with a specialized training kit used to maintain the dog’s proficiency across a variety of explosive scent profiles. Pensacola Police already have a trained K-9 officer prepared to serve as the dog’s handler. In addition to supporting daily airport operations, the new K-9 team will be available to assist neighboring law enforcement agencies during high-profile events, bomb threats or other situations requiring specialized detection capabilities. This mutual-aid role will make the team an important public safety asset for Pensacola and communities throughout Northwest Florida. Details about the K-9 and its introduction to the community will be announced following the canine’s acquisition, training and deployment.

PENSACOLA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT LAUNCHES NEW PASSENGER-FOCUSED WEBSITE Pensacola International Airport (PNS) has launched a completely redesigned flypensacola.com, giving passengers a faster, more intuitive way to plan their travel and access real-time airport information from any device. Created in partnership with Pensacolabased creative agency HatchMark Studio, the new website was designed with travelers in mind. Its mobile-first layout prioritizes the information passengers need most; before they leave home, while traveling to the airport, and throughout their journey to or from PNS. The launch comes as Pensacola International Airport prepares to begin construction on its broader Terminal Expansion and Modernization Program, including a modernized security checkpoint and new five-gate concourse. Just as those investments will improve the physical passenger journey, the redesigned website modernizes the digital experience that often begins well before a traveler arrives at the terminal. “Our passengers’ experience with PNS begins long before they walk through our doors, and our website should provide the same easy, welcoming experience they expect from our airport,” Airport Executive Director Matt Coughlin said. “As we prepare to transform our terminal and expand our concourse, this new website ensures our digital infrastructure is growing alongside our physical infrastructure. It gives travelers faster, clearer access to the information they need and represents another important investment in the overall passenger experience.” The streamlined site offers faster load times, simplified navigation and content organized around the needs of arriving and departing passengers. Prominent real-time

tools allow travelers to check parking availability across airport lots, track complimentary parking shuttles and view current flight information directly from the homepage. Additional features include: • Live parking availability for each airport parking facility • A live map showing airport shuttle locations • Real-time arrival and departure information • Mobile-friendly terminal and exterior airport maps • A comprehensive guide to terminal amenities, restaurants, shopping and guest services • Airline information and an interactive overview of PNS nonstop destinations • Ground transportation and parking guidance • Accessibility resources and information about passenger assistance programs • An expanded newsroom and media resource center • Business, procurement, development and airport operations resources • A newly developed history of PNS and its role in the growth of Pensacola and Northwest Florida The website also provides quick access to live Transportation Security Administration wait-time information, regional visitor resources, airport safety reporting and updates about the Terminal Expansion and Modernization Program. The redesigned FlyPensacola.com is part of PNS’s continued commitment to using technology, infrastructure and thoughtful design to make every stage of the passenger journey easier; from planning and parking to boarding and beyond.

CONGRESSMAN PATRONIS PROPOSES NATIONAL CEMETERY IN OKALOOSA COUNTY Congressman Jimmy Patronis (R-FL) announced a proposal to study the establishment of a new National Veterans Cemetery in Okaloosa County, ensuring the men and women who served our nation have a dignified final resting place close to home. With limited burial space available at Arlington National Cemetery, Congressman Patronis believes Northwest Florida should have a new national cemetery that better serves the region's large and growing military and veteran population. “Northwest Florida has a long history of answering our nation’s call to serve,” said Congressman Patronis. “Our veterans deserve a final resting place that reflects the honor and sacrifice of their service. A national cemetery in Okaloosa County would ensure those who wore the uniform can be laid to rest with the dignity they’ve earned.” The new advisory committee will review possible site locations, including orphan parcels located on Eglin Air Force Base, with roughly 200 acres planned for the cemetery. A team of community leaders have been appointed to help guide the research and planning for the project. The National Veterans Cemetery Steering Committee will begin its work in September and engage crucial stakeholders to provide input and support for the project. PORTION OF BENNY RUSSELL PARK TO TEMPORARILY CLOSE FOR PLAYGROUND IMPROVEMENTS A portion of Benny Russell Park, will temporarily close beginning Monday, August 10, as crews replace the playground equipment. The project is expected to be completed by mid-November, weather permitting. The splash pad and the playground adjacent to the splash pad will remain open throughout construction. Visitors should be aware that the easternmost parking lot, located nearest the construction area, may experience intermittent closures during the project to accommodate construction equipment and materials.

As part of the improvements, the commemorative tile wall at the entrance to the wooden castle playground will be removed due to its deteriorating condition and to provide access for construction equipment. Over the years, vandalism and weatherrelated damage have resulted in many tiles becoming broken or missing. Santa Rosa County recognizes the significance of the tile wall to many residents and is committed to preserving its legacy through this digital collection.
