National Flight Academy: Summer Camp for Adults

by Kaitlyn Peacock

If you haven’t been to the National Naval Aviation Museum onboard Naval Air Station Pensacola yet, you haven’t really seen Pensacola. If you have, then you might not know about the National Flight Academy (NFA) just next door. If you do know about NFA, you might not know that it’s not just a summer camp for your children. NFA offers unique experiences for children and adults alike. NFA’s Adult Team Training Program may be new to most, but it’s actually been a part of NFA for many years. Director of Marketing and Public Relations for the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation (NAMF) Malerie Shelton said she is always surprised at how many people don’t know that they can get a similar experience at NFA as their children. “It’s almost like a little secret,” she said. “People don’t know this is right on the base or what we offer. A lot of the local community understand that if they have a middle or high school student that would be interested in this field, they can send them for our summer deployment program, which are overnight for kids. But they don’t realize that we do have a really unique to come through and customize your own team building.” The Adult Team Training Program focuses more on corporate and business teambuilding and leadership training, but the program can be tweaked to include communications training among other lessons. While the children programs include learning math and science along with leadership skills, the adult program focuses more on the more advanced critical learning and thinking skills. Although the programs are very similar, the leadership, communication and other skills learned from NFA are universal for children and adults, and can be used in and out of the work place.

“Depending on what the client is asking for, they essentially go through missions that are very similar to what the kids do,” Shelton said. “We just take out some of the math, the science, and we turn it into if they want to focus on planning and executing, or something like that. So we can tweak our programing and aviation has so many facets that we can apply to what they are looking for.” The program is run aboard NFA’s simulated aircraft carrier the USS Ambition (CVT-11), a more than 100,000 square-foot, four-story structure. It boasts an impressive array of technology that includes 42 networked flight simulators, board rooms, a fully functioning galley and several breakout rooms. Special effects within Ambition

simulate an actual aircraft carrier, with the sound and feeling of what it would be like to be out on the water aboard a giant ship. “Everything at the National Flight Academy has a purpose, all the decals on the wall, everything on the ship is supposed to mimic what a real aircraft carrier is like,” Shelton said. “I’ve had people who have been aboard real aircraft carriers tell me it’s the closest you can get to the actual thing.” The immersive environment is important to the experience of the program, according to Shelton. People aboard Ambition are thrown into a new environment that no one is used to and no one knows quite what to do. This all lends to a better experience during the program, as well as lending a bit of fun and adventure. With no one knowing what to expect, everyone is put on the same level at the start of the program. “We are putting you in a unique environment that’s outside of your comfort zone,” Shelton said. “All the egos, all of the titles are dropped at the door. When everybody is in an uncomfortable, new environment they are more apt to pay attention and learn more and take it all in.” Programs take at least 12 partici-

WE’RE SOCIAL

pants to work effectively, but NFA can accommodate up to 200 people at a time, and can take place over several days or a few hours. The program is led by professionals who have experience as team trainers who act as guides to the participants. Depending on what experience you want, NFA’s programs can be changed to fit any need and can focus on one particular skill, say planning and executing, over something like leadership. Among those who have come through NFA include Navy Federal Credit Union, Ascend Materials, the Delaware Chemical Company and more. Shelton said they have had people from all over the country come to experience the program, and many of those who get the chance come back again or send their children the next summer. She said one woman in particular came through the program twice and sent her child to learn at NFA. Between the adult and children programs, NFA has had people from all 50 states and at least seven countries come to experience the program. Shelton said even those who are not interested in aviation or the military find something to enjoy, as they do not center their programs strictly around military teachings, but rather the skills important to communicate and lead successfully. If you find yourself aboard Ambition, Shelton recommends if you do nothing else that you fly the simulators. The 42 simulators are all networked together, meaning everyone in a simulator can see others in the simulators around them as if they were flying in formation. In addition, people in an adjacent room on headphones can also see the “planes” and can communicate with everyone as if they were air traffic controllers. This is just one of the experiences the program offers, and it is unique only to Pensacola and NFA. “There are plenty of unique teambuilding trainings around the world, but for one of them to be here in your backyard, I think a lot of people just don’t know it’s available,” Shelton said. NFA is an educational program operated and supported by NAMF, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit which also supports the National Naval Aviation Museum.

ECFR reminds residents to practice fire safety this Thanksgiving Escambia County Fire Rescue reminds residents to stay safe when cooking on Thanksgiving, which is the peak day for home cooking fires across the United States. In Escambia County, cooking fires account for 62 percent of all house fires. Follow these tips to help prevent fires and to be better prepared in the event of a fire: • Always have working smoke detectors in your home. For information about obtaining a home smoke detector, call 595-HERO (4376). City of Pensacola residents may call 436-5200 for smoke detector installation assistance. • Have an escape plan and know two ways out of every room in your home. • In the event of a fire, call 911 even if you think the fire is out. • Never leave cooking food unattended. If you must leave the room, turn the stove off first. • Do not panic if a pan catches on fire. Place a lid over the pan, turn the heat source off and let the pan cool. • If a fire occurs in your oven, leave the door closed and turn the oven off to prevent the fire from spreading. • Keep children at least 3 feet away from the stove. • Never wear loose clothing while cooking. • Keep the area around the stove clear of anything that can burn, including packaging, paper towels and dish cloths.

• Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove so you don’t bump them. Turkey frying safety tips: • Use a fryer with thermostat controls. This will ensure the oil does not become overheated. • Thaw your turkey completely. Ice on the bird will cause the oil to splatter. • Don’t overfill the pot with oil. If you do, the oil will overflow when you add the turkey causing a fire hazard. • Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from the fryer. • Always use the fryer outdoors. Fire statistics: • Unattended cooking is the leading factor in home cooking fires. • Two-thirds of home cooking fires started when food or other cooking materials caught fire. • Clothing was the item first ignited in less than one percent of these fires, but these incidents accounted for 18 percent of the cooking fire deaths. • Ranges accounted for the largest share (62 percent) of home cooking fire incidents. • More than half (55 percent) of reported non-fatal home cooking fire injuries occurred when the victims tried to fight the fire themselves. • Frying poses the greatest risk of fire. DESANTIS NAILS DOWN WIN IN GOVERNOR’S RACE

By LLOYD DUNKELBERGER NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA

TALLAHASSEE – For the second time, Ron DeSantis can declare victory in the 2018 Florida governor’s race. The results of a state-ordered machine recount of the Nov. 6 election between DeSantis and Democrat Andrew Gillum were released Thursday, showing the former Republican congressman from Ponte Vedra Beach maintained a nearly 34,000-vote lead over his rival, according to the state Division of Elections. DeSantis, who is slated to become governor on Jan. 8, only lost one vote from his lead in unofficial results that triggered the machine recount. Such recounts are required when margins between candidates are 0.5 percent or less. The recount gave DeSantis a 33,683vote lead, compared to a 33,684-vote margin in the tally of unofficial results released Saturday. DeSantis maintained a 0.41 percent margin over Gillum, with 49.59 percent of the vote to Gillum’s 49.18, the recount showed. “Those returns remain clear and unambiguous, just as they were on election night, and at every point throughout this process,” DeSantis said in a statement. “I remain humbled by your support and the great honor the people of Florida have shown me as I prepare to serve as your next governor.” However, Gillum, who conceded the race on election night but later retracted his concession as the vote margin

narrowed, indicated he is not ready to give up on the race. “A vote denied is justice denied – the state of Florida must count every legally cast vote. As today’s unofficial reports and recent court proceedings make clear, there are tens of thousands of votes that have yet to be counted,” Gillum said in a statement. “It is not over until every legally casted vote is counted.” But unlike races for the U.S. Senate and state agriculture commissioner, which are headed for statewide manual recounts because the victory margins were less than 0.25 percent, the major vote counting in the governor’s race is over.

County elections officials are scheduled to file their official returns to the state by noon on Sunday, with the state Elections Canvassing Commission meeting Tuesday to certify the results. A ruling Thursday by a federal judge leaves open the possibility of more votes in the governor’s race. U.S. District Judge Mark Walker issued an order giving potentially thousands of Florida voters a chance to fix their ballots by this weekend, if they were rejected because of mismatched signatures. But Walker rejected a request from U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, who is trailing Gov. Rick Scott by about 12,600 votes in their Senate race, to extend the recount deadlines. Several counties re-

ported they were unable to complete the machine recounts by the 3 p.m. Thursday deadline, including Palm Beach and Broward counties. As of Thursday, Gillum had not filed any lawsuits contesting the election. However, his lawyer, Barry Richard, told MSNBC earlier in the week that Gillum was “reviewing his options” on a lawsuit, expressing concern that the election showed that Florida’s laws are impacting “the fundamental right to vote.” “He feels an obligation to ensure that votes are counted and not to sit back when we’re beginning to learn that they are not being counted for a number of reasons,” Richard told MSNBC. Gillum would have up to 10 days following the certification of the election outcome on Tuesday to file a lawsuit contesting the results, according to state law. In his statement, DeSantis said the election, which drew a record number of voters for a gubernatorial race, was a “vigorously debated” contest of ideas. But he said the campaign has to “give way to governing and bringing people together to secure Florida’s future.” He extended an offer to Gillum to join him in “a conversation” about the state. “We have both traveled the state and met Floridians from all walks of life. Sharing these experiences will, I believe, help us unite our state and build toward unity on behalf of the people of Florida,” DeSantis said.

CABINET MEETING RESET FOR END OF NOV. From THE NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF Gov. Rick Scott and the state Cabinet will meet by phone on Nov. 30 to consider issues such as Florida Power & Light power-plant projects in Broward and Miami-Dade counties, according to an agenda posted online. Scott and the Cabinet initially scheduled the meeting for Tuesday but canceled that meeting. The agenda for the Nov. 30 meeting was posted on the Cabinet website Thursday. No explanation was given for the change of dates. Among other things, Scott and the Cabinet could sign off on a plan by FPL to build a power plant in Broward County and revisit a dispute about a nuclear project in MiamiDade.

NELSON CONCEDES SENATE RACE, SCOTT HEADED TO WASHINGTON By LLOYD DUNKELBERGER NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA TALLAHASSEE – With a victory margin of a little more than a tenth of a percentage point out of 8.2 million votes cast, Gov. Rick Scott has won election to the U.S. Senate, ending the four-decade political career of Bill Nelson. In the final vote tallies sent to the state Division of Elections on Sunday, Scott, a two-term Republican governor, held a 10,033-vote edge – or 0.12 percent – more than Nelson, a Democrat who was seeking re-election to his fourth six-year term in the U.S. Senate. The election went to an automatic machine recount when Scott failed to secure a lead of more than 0.5 percent in the initial count after the Nov. 6 election. The machine recount left the Republican with a 12,603-vote lead, or 0.15 percent, triggering the statewide manual recount that concluded at noon Sunday. Scott’s lead was narrowed by 2,570 votes between the end of the machine recount on Thursday and the conclusion of the manual recount, but he has consistently held a lead since Election Day. The final results are expected to be certified when the state Elections Canvassing Commission meets Tuesday morning in Tallahassee. Scott, who said Nelson “graciously conceded” in a phone call on Sunday, thanked Nelson “for his years of public

service.” While the voting recount process drew harsh accusations of fraud and political chicanery, numerous lawsuits and counter-lawsuits, Scott’s victory statement called for unity. “My focus will not be on looking backward, but on doing exactly what I ran on: making Washington work,” Scott said. “I know change is never popular in Washington and that I’m just one person --- but we have to start somewhere.” Nelson’s defeat marked the end of the 76-year-old Democrat’s lengthy political career, which includes 18 years in the U.S. Senate, a dozen years in the U.S. House, six years on the state Cabinet and six years in the Florida Legislature. “Well, things worked out a little differently than Grace and I had hoped. But let me say, I by no measure feel defeated,” Nelson said in a statement Sunday afternoon. “And that’s because I have had the privilege of serving the people of Florida and our country for most of my life.” Nelson used his statement to urge support for issues including health-care policies that cover pre-existing conditions, Florida’s environment, Social Security and Medicare. He called for an end to “all forms of voter suppression.” But he also said he would urge opposing political factions “to seek common ground with their colleagues on

STATE PANEL CERTIFIES ELECTION RESULTS From THE NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF Sen. Bill Galvano, R-Bradenton, and Rep. Jose Oliva, R-Miami Lakes, were formally elected Tuesday to serve as Senate president and House speaker, moving into two of the most-powerful jobs in the state. Galvano and Oliva had long been positioned to move into the roles, with Tuesday’s election coming during an organization session. Sen. Audrey Gibson, D-Jacksonville, and Rep. Kionne McGhee, D-Miami, also moved into their roles as Senate and House minority leaders for the next two years. The one-day session also included swearing in senators and House members elected Nov. 6. The News Service will move full stories later Tuesday about the organization session.

the other side of the aisle.” “Inevitably, at times, that effort will fall short. But we have to try,” Nelson said. “We have to move beyond a politics that aims not just to defeat but to destroy; where truth is treated as disposable, where falsehoods abound, and the free press is assaulted as the ‘enemy of the people.’ ” Scott’s Senate victory carried the hallmarks of his two previous statewide elections. All three campaigns were costly, hard fought and decided by extremely narrow margins. A wealthy former health-care executive from Naples, Scott, 65, entered the 2010 governor’s race as a political novice and beat Democrat Alex Sink by a 1.2 percent margin, after spending more than $70 million of his personal fortune. In his re-election bid in 2014, Scott edged former Gov. Charlie Crist by a 1 percent margin. Scott’s 0.12 percent, or 10,033 votes, victory over Nelson was his costliest and tightest race. He spent more than $64 million of his own money on the contest, according to Federal Elections Commission reports. Total spending by Scott, Nelson and outside groups was well over $100 million. Scott’s victory means that Florida will be represented by two Republican senators in the U.S. Senate for the first time since the Reconstruction era. Scott will join U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, who won re-election to his second term

in 2016. In a statement, Rubio praised the working relationship he had with Nelson, despite their differing politics. “Even though we often voted differently, not once did that interfere with our ability to work together,” Rubio said. “I will miss working with him very much.” Nelson’s defeat underscores the fact that incumbent senators rarely lose reelection bids. The last time that happened in Florida was in 1986, when U.S. Sen. Paula Hawkins, a Republican, lost her re-election bid to Gov. Bob Graham, a Democrat. Over the last half century, the majority of U.S. senators representing Florida have left office by deciding not to seek re-election. Scott is expected to join the U.S. Senate when it convenes for a new session on Jan. 3. It will mean he will have to resign as governor before his term ends on Jan. 8, when Republican Gov.elect Ron DeSantis takes office. If Scott resigns early, Lt. Gov. Carlos Lopez-Cantera, a former state lawmaker from Miami, will become Florida’s 46th governor for a short period, before DeSantis’ term begins. A similar scenario occurred in January 1987, when Graham resigned as governor to join the U.S. Senate. Lt. Gov. Wayne Mixson served three days as Graham’s successor in the governor’s office before former Gov. Bob Martinez took office.
