flyers Will Chase title under championship coach

If it were ever improbable that a minor league hockey team would enjoy wide support in the Florida panhandle, the Pensacola Ice Flyers have long since laid any doubts to rest. The Flyers draw roughly 4,000 fans to the Pensacola Bay Center for each home game, and more than 100,000 over the course of a season. With the 2018-2019 season set to begin in late October and a familiar face back behind home bench, the will Flyers look to recapture the magic of a few years ago and bring home the President’s Cup. The Flyers first home game is set for Oct. 20 against the Birmingham Bulls. Tickets will be just $5. It will be the first time the Flyers have offered a $5 ticket night to open the season. Following a 33-16 record last season, Ice Flyers owner Greg Harris parted ways with former coach Jeff Bes and brought back coach Rod Aldoff, who led the team to Presidents’ Cup titles in 2014 and 2016. The Flyers will also have a full-time assistant coach for the first time in former defenseman and assistant captain Jeremy Gates. Rosters are always fluid in the minors, more so this year as the Southern Professional Hockey League is adding an expansion team in Moline, Illinois. The Flyers have 13 protected players including forwards Charlie Adams, Jessyko

Bernard, Josh Cousineau, Matt Johnson, Garrett Milan, Brian Morgan, Ken Neil, TJ Sarcona, defensemen Nathan Bruyere, Mark Esshaki and Christian Weidauer and goalies Brian Billett and Sean Bonar. “The start of the season is kind of a puzzle,” said coach Aldoff. “You’ve kind of got the main part of the puzzle with your core group of guys, then you have to wait and see what happens with guys moving around and then you get your team together. So that’s what we’re doing in the short term. Guys know Pensacola is a great place to play and we have a good reputation so that helps.” After leading the Flyers to the Presidents’ Cup title in 2016, Aldoff was hired by the Norfolk Admirals in the higher-level East Coast Hockey League, but was fired after an ownership change. Aldoff was working as a scout for the Edmonton Oilers when Harris reached out to him about returning to Pensacola. Aldoff said the decision to come back was an easy one and that he looks forward to getting in to training camp “I think one thing that’s always been very good is our organization,” Aldoff said. “Greg expects professionalism and that’s something I expect too out myself and my players, so when you can work for good people that’s always important. Our fan support has always been tremendous; we

have great fans every night.” The players are looking forward to the season as well. Goalie Brian Billett is heading into his second year with the Ice Flyers and described his ambitions for the season as, “championship or bust.” “It’s been such a good experience so far, just the overall city and everything you can do and enjoy here,” he said. “And once you actually get

Coach Aldoff for bringing in a good players that have been in the league for a while, I think we have a very solid foundation and anything less than a championship is a bust.” Success in the minor leagues can be a two-edged sword. A team that does well is more likely to draw bigger crowds. The Flyers, for example, saw their highest average attendance during their champi-

the ranks and eventually make the NHL. Forging a good team in the minors, said forward Matt Johnson, is about getting guys to put team goals ahead o personal ambition. “Obviously in the minors everybody wants to play at a higher level,” Johnson said. “But if you can get guys to buy-in, to be less individualistic and more team-oriented,

on the ice at the Bay Center and play in front of the best group of fans in the SPHL it really makes things that much better … I’m really optimistic about the season, credit goes to (owner) Greg Harris and

onship-winning years. But as the team succeeds, players are more likely to get called up to higher leagues, leaving the lower-level team to fill those gaps. The goal of every minor league player is to move up

team success leads to individual success – because that’s what (higher-level teams) are looking for. Nobody wants a prima donna call-up who things he’s too good to be there.”

“Plan 9 From Outer Space” film screening planned for “Nightmare Theatre” launch at WSRE Horror movie fans are invited to gather at the WSRE Amos Studio Nov. 9 at 6 p.m. for a celebration of the film genre’s return to local airwaves. WSRE is producing 13 new episodes of “Nightmare Theatre” that will begin airing Saturdays at 10 p.m., Oct. 27 and streaming online at wsre.org. In celebration of the series launch, WSRE and Great Southern Restaurant Group are teaming up to present a film screening which will feature “Plan 9 From Outer Space” on the big screen, a Merrill Movie Museum exhibit, a costume contest and the stars of “Nightmare Theatre”—Mike Ensley as the Baron Mondo Von Doren, Chip Chism as El Sapo de Tempesto and Lemmie Crews as Mittens the Werewolf. Recent inductees of the Horror Host Hall of Fame, the costumed trio have been presenting horror films since 2001, when “Nightmare Theatre” was first broadcast by Cox Media. Since then, there have been film festivals, other cable access broadcasts and a national appearance on SpikeTV’s “Ghouls Gone Wild” in 2006. The program last aired on WUWF-TV in 2016. Upon arrival to the Nov. 9 launch event, guests will be welcomed by the “Nightmare Theatre” cast, including the new Museum Curator played by Julio Diaz, the real-life collection curator of the Merrill Movie Museum. On each show, Diaz will showcase an item from the museum’s extensive collection of movie props, memorabilia and behindthe-scenes material. At the event, these

items will be on display for fans to see up close. In the “Nightmare Theatre” series plot, the Baron is a minor demon assigned to the physical plane to inflict misery upon mankind by way of “bad” movies. With his sidekicks—the masked wrestler El Sapo and pet werewolf Mittens—the Baron introduces old horror films in a humorous manner with little respect and a side of intriguing film history. The following films will be featured in this inaugural season produced by WSRE: “The Killer Shrews,” “A Bucket of Blood,” “Little Shop of Horrors,” “Mesa of Lost Women,” “The Terror,” “Moon of the Wolf,” “Horror Express,” “The Wasp Woman,” “Warning from Space,” “They Came from Beyond Space,” “Track of the Moon Beast,” “The House on Haunted Hill” and “The Brain That Wouldn’t Die.” The film screening of “Plan 9 From Outer Space” will begin at 7 p.m., following the movie memorabilia exhibit and costume contest entries, which will start at 6 p.m. “Plan 9 From Outer Space is one of those films that’s so bad it’s good, and the chance to experience it with a live audience is such a rare opportunity,” Ensley said. The film screening launch event is sponsored in part by Great Southern Restaurant Group, Hula Moon Tattoo and Messenger Hot Rods. Admission is free with online registration at wsre. org/nightmaretheatre.

ECSD announces Operation: Help Our Neighbors’ Schools Escambia County School Superintendent Malcolm Thomas has announced the district-wide initiative to assist schools in two of our neighboring counties devastated by Hurricane Michael. Superintendent Thomas acknowledged that the Escambia County School District was blessed last week and spared significant damage from Hurricane Michael, while our neighbors to the east took a direct hit and suffered damage to many of their schools. “During Hurricane Ivan, neighboring counties stepped forward to assist us, so now it is our turn to repay the favor. Our district has always shown a willingness to lend support during times of critical need, and many have asked for ideas or ways to provide help and support to our neighbors to the east,” Thomas said. “We have established an account within our Escambia County Public Schools Foundation, and we are ready to work together to raise funds to assist school districts who were less fortunate.” Immediately following Hurricane Michael’s departure, and the beginning of recovery efforts, Superintendent Thomas has remained in communication with the Superintendents affected across the Panhandle. “The school districts of Bay and Gulf Counties have been the most impacted by Hurricane Michael. Although their needs are still being compiled, we know it will be extensive and expensive,” Thomas added. “The community has already started to help with Operation: Help Our Neighbor. The Escambia County School District is going to join that effort with Operation: Help

Our Neighbors’ Schools.” All ECSD schools will be asked to work together to raise funds over the next few weeks for the damaged schools in Bay and Gulf School Districts. A project account has been established in the Escambia County Public Schools Foundation for this purpose. “We also know from experience that the schools don’t necessarily have anywhere to properly store donated materials, such as books, school supplies and/or clothing; therefore, we plan to focus on making financial donations to their public schools foundations. This will allow them to access the donated funds and order what they need, when they are ready,” Thomas concluded. Any school or organization that wishes to participate in the fund raising efforts for Operation: Help Our Neighbors’ Schools should develop fund raising projects and deposit the money into the Escambia County Public Schools Foundation by delivering cash or checks to the Foundation’s office, located in the J.E. Hall Center, 30 E. Texar Drive, by Nov. 2. Electronic, or credit card donations may be made by using the Make A Donation link on the Foundation’s page at: ecpsfoundation.org. Donors will see a box where the recipient of their donation can be specified by typing, “Help Our Neighbor,” or “Help Our Neighbors’ Schools.” One hundred percent of all donations will be distributed to Bay or Gulf County School Districts’ public schools foundations after the Nov. 2 deadline. For more information, visit ECSD’s web page at www.escambiaschools. org.

STATE FREEZES INSURANCE RATES AFTER MICHAEL

Scott also directed Insurance But state Chief Financial OfCommissioner David Altmaier ficer Jimmy Patronis, in a to require rescinding for 90 statement released by Scott’s

office, pointed to the massive damage caused by Michael, which made landfall Wednesday in Mexico Beach as a Category 4 storm and pounded Panama City and other areas of the Panhandle and the state’s Big Bend. “Entire communities have been wiped off the map,” Patronis, a Panama City native, said in the statement. “I can’t say this enough: The damage is catastrophic. As our neighbors and communities assess the damage and start recovering, the last thing they need to worry about is if their insurance coverage will be dropped for non-payment. Our focus is saving lives, restoring power and repairing communications system. I’m calling on insurance companies to keep that at the front of their minds and not take advantage of this disaster.” It remains too early to pinpoint the amount of damage caused by Michael. But as an

indication, the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America issued a preliminary estimate Oct. 11 that said insured losses could total $2 billion to $4.5 billion. The state-backed Citizens Property Insurance Corp. has set up temporary centers in Panama City and Tallahassee to help policyholders with claims. The centers will operate from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at a Sam’s Club at 1707 West 23rd St. in Panama City, and at a Walmart Supercenter at 4021 Lagniappe Way in Tallahassee. Insurance claims will be part of the recovery from Michael that will take months to play out. Shorter term, state and local officials are focused on issues such as restoring electricity, with utility crews converging on Northwest Florida from various parts of the country. As of noon Sunday, 191,361 utility customers lacked power, ac-

cording to Scott’s office. Gulf Power, which serves hard-hit areas including Bay County, released a schedule Oct. 14 that showed gradual power restoration expected in its service territory over the next 10 days. Areas of Panama City Beach, for example, were expected to be restored Sunday and Monday, but downtown Panama City and communities such as Callaway and Lynn Haven are estimated to be restored by Oct. 24. Areas of Washington, Jackson and Holmes counties are gradually expected to be restored by Oct. 19. “We know that our customers are counting on us, so they can begin rebuilding their lives,” Stan Connally, chairman, CEO and president of the Pensacola-based utility said in a prepared statement. “We are working safely and aggressively around the clock to get the lights back on.”

CITRUS GROWERS GET A DOSE OF GOOD NEWS By JIM TURNER NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA TALLAHASSEE – A year after Hurricane Irma ravaged Florida’s citrus industry, growers are on pace to slightly surpass their production from two years ago. Forecast numbers announced Oct. 11 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture are still down from where the industry has been most of the past five decades. But the projections are encouraging for an industry that has been on a steady decline because of citrus greening disease and pressures from development. Florida Citrus Commission Chairman Ellis Hunt called the forecast a reflection of the work by growers. “To nearly come back to production levels of just a few years ago shows that we are moving in the right direction and putting the appropriate caretaking practices in place,” Hunt said a prepared statement. The federal forecast, the first of the season, estimates that the industry will fill 86.9 million 90-pound boxes – a standard measurement – over the next nine months. The production figure, which includes oranges, grapefruit and other specialty crops such as tangerines and tangelos, would be a 75 percent increase from the Irma-impacted 2017/18 growing season. It also would be 11 percent above the 2016/17 yield, though that was a five-decade low for production. The 49.58 million boxes filled in the past season – as growers reported losses of up to 70 percent because of Irma flooding groves and uprooting trees – was the lowest crop output since the 1941/42 season. Shannon Shepp, executive director of the Florida Department of Citrus, said officials are pleased growers are getting positive news, which they “haven’t heard in a long time.” “After combating greening for so long and going through Hurricane Irma last season, today’s forecast means we truly could be on a path to recovery,” Shepp said in a statement. Based on field surveys, USDA state statistician Mark Hudson said Florida is projected to fill 79 million boxes with oranges. That would be up from 44.95 million boxes filled in the past season and from 68.85 million boxes two seasons ago. Grapefruit production is projected to increase from 3.88 million boxes in the past season to 6.7 million boxes this season. The production of red and white grapefruit is still down from two seasons ago when 7.76 million boxes were filled. Specialty fruit account for another 1.2 million boxes in the new forecast. Through the mid-1990s, the state’s citrus growers regularly filled more than 200 million boxes a year of oranges and 50 million boxes a year of grapefruit. The forecast comes as an application process is underway for growers to receive federal Irma assistance – via a $343 million block grant to Florida out of a wider disaster-relief package signed into law in February by President Donald Trump.

NEXT GOVERNOR TO PICK THREE SUPREME COURT JUSTICES By LLOYD DUNKELBERGER NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA

TALLAHASSEE – The next governor, and not Gov. Rick Scott, has the authority to appoint three new justices to the Florida Supreme Court, the court ruled Oct. 15. Scott, who will leave office in January and is running for U.S. Senate, had repeatedly asserted the right to appoint replacements for justices Barbara Pariente, R. Fred Lewis and Peggy Quince, who will leave the court in January because they have reached a mandatory retirement age. But in a brief, unsigned order Monday, the Supreme Court said Scott “exceeded his authority” in directing a judicial nominating commission to meet and forward a list of potential justices to him by Nov. 10. More than four dozen judges and lawyers submitted applications by a deadline last week to the nominating commission, which had scheduled interviews with the applicants in early November. But the court ruling Monday blocked Scott’s action through a legal procedure known as a writ of quo warranto, which had been sought by the League of Women Voters of Florida and Common Cause Florida. The groups argued that the appointment power belonged to the new governor, who takes office Jan. 8. In its decision, the Supreme Court said the winner of the Nov. 6 election between Republican Ron DeSantis and Democrat Andrew Gillum “has the sole authority” to fill the court vacancies based on at least two premises. One premise is that the retiring justices, Pariente, Lewis and Quince, do not leave prior to the end of their terms on the midnight that falls between Jan. 7 and Jan. 8. None of the justices have indicated that they plan an earlier retirement. The second premise is that the new governor follows the precedent of recent newly elected governors

and takes the oath of office prior to Jan. 8, the inauguration day, meaning he officially becomes governor at midnight at the same time the retiring justices’ terms end. If for some reason, the new governor does not take the pre-arranged oath, Scott would retain his authority as governor along with his power to appoint justices until the new governor takes the oath. In arguing against the writ, Scott’s lawyers had said he was following the precedent of beginning the appointment process before the vacancies occur, noting numerous justices have been appointed using this procedure to avoid prolonged vacancies on the court. Although the court ruled that Scott exceeded his authority in seeking a list of potential justices by a Nov. 10 deadline, the justices agreed to hear oral arguments on the issue of when the Supreme Court Judicial Nominating Commission can certify a list of candidates to the governor. The hearing on that issue is set for Nov. 8. But the court order also noted the 60-day deadline for making the appointments after the nominations have been certified by the nominating commission “begins to run only when the governor with the authority to appoint has taken office,” citing the state Constitution. John Mills, a lawyer who represented the League of Women Voters and Common Cause, said the court ruling should slow down the nominating process and allow more judges and lawyers to consider applying to serve on the court. “While the issue of when the (commission) may make its nominations is yet to be resolved, one thing is clear now – there is no reason for the (commission) to rush through the nominating process as it has been doing,” Mills said in a statement. He said the “the artificial deadline of applications a month before the election created an unfair chilling effect on many potential applicants, especially those in private

practice.” Mills said “the only fair thing” would be for the nominating commission to halt its process and wait for the Supreme Court’s final order and then reopen the application process. The appointments to the sevenmember Supreme Court are being watched closely because they have the potential to tilt the judicial direction of the state’s highest court for years to come. Pariente, Lewis and Quince are part of a liberal bloc, which now holds a slim four to three majority and has thwarted Scott and the Republican-dominated Legislature on numerous occasions since the governor took office in 2011. With the court’s ruling, the judicial makeup of the court will largely depend on the result of the Nov. 6 election between Gillum and DeSantis. Gillum, the mayor of Tallahassee, said he was “pleased” that the court has left the appointments in the hands of the next governor. “It is a duty I take extremely seriously and, as governor, one of my top priorities will be to restore integrity to the judicial nominating process,” he said in a statement. DeSantis, a former congressman and Harvard-educated lawyer, had also asserted the next governor would make the court appointments, drawing some criticism in the Republican primary for the stance. He has made it clear that he would favor conservative justices. “It’s important that we have a governor who understands that we have to appoint solid constitutionalists to our state courts, including our state Supreme Court,” he told Florida Chamber of Commerce members last month. Blaise Ingoglia, chairman of the state Republican Party, said the “stakes for November’s election just got higher” with the court ruling, warning that a Gillum victory would result in “radical activist justices,” while DeSantis would appoint “strong constitutionalists” to the court.
