From the POA Welcome to Rosemary Beach! Summer is here again and the beach is the place to be. Being “the place to be” is an interesting position to experience. Many people have worked hard to create, to nurture and to protect this town over its more than twenty-year history, and as a result Rosemary Beach is, by most definitions, tremendously successful. This is a tribute to the vision, investment and effort of all the designers, founders, owners and merchants that have been a part of this town over those decades. We hope their reward has been worth all the effort, and we are certain that this special place has been a gift for the many, many people and families that have visited, explored and come to know it. With that expression of gratitude to those that came before us - and since summer is nothing if not a time to be a little more light-hearted we want to offer you a tongue-in-cheek (mostly) top-five countdown of the reasons why being a successful town can be a handful, including a few of the reasons we think it’s still worth it all the effort to be the best:
Number 5: IT’S CROWDED And we love it! It’s all this summertime activity that supports the year-round high quality of our merchants and special events. So, while it’s tempting to quote Yogi Berra, let’s just say we know that there are moments when finding a parking space in a popular spot can be frustrating. Remember though that if we had a sea of parking lots in the heart of our town, we wouldn’t have a heart in our town! If you are ready for a break in the action (or looking for a parking spot in the afternoon) it’s easy to find peace and quiet here even with all the activity going on in town center. Take stroll through the series of parks and boardwalks on the north side of town for a change of pace. Or join the turtle volunteers and hit the beach at sunrise. Trust us, taking the path less-travelled will make your day and you might just realize it’s not really all that crowded here after all.
Number 4: ALL THE WEAR AND TEAR The aforementioned crowds do put a bit of a patina on our common areas and infrastructure, to put it mildly. One of the tenets of New Urbanism is an understanding that attracting people to get out of their cars and gather together is the foundation of establishing a strong sense of place. Providing traditional materials such as wood, pavers and steel-troweled stucco is an integral part of making attractive and comfortable spaces for people. The town’s designers could have opted to allow or even require materials that are less maintenance-intensive, such as plastic
lumber or vinyl siding. But the results would be a sort of architectural self-fulfilling prophecy… as the crowds lost interest and diminished, perhaps the sidewalks would last forever! Like a favorite shirt, the challenge is to stay true to tradition, enjoy that patina for a little while but catch it before it gets beyond “patina” and into “worn-out”.
Number 3: THERE’S NO GOOD TIME TO DO MAINTENANCE Speaking of worn-out, if all that intense pedestrian and vehicular traffic weren’t hard enough on our buildings, streets, sidewalks, boardwalks and furniture, then the equally-
Rosemary Thymes | 7
Scenic Sotheby’s International Realty is #1 in Sales Market-Wide intense Gulf Coast weather comes in right behind it to put the big hurt on us. The best time to fix something is apparently in the eye of the beholder, and it’s usually when the beholder is not in town. The reality is that many of the construction and renovation projects that both property owners and the POA have to accomplish either take more than 9 months (meaning that they will impact at least one cycle of every season) or their start or completion date is driven by something out of the owner’s control. A few even have to start and stop repeatedly to allow a structure or space to remain in some degree of active use. One man’s much needed renovation is another man’s unwelcome alarm clock. Truly, construction activity is both a sign of success and a complaint waiting for ears. Yet another underpinning of success that is a handful!
more robust paving comes at the cost of both time and money, and we recognize it interferes with life in our town. But it is the right decision. because it solves problems that threaten our success. We hope you can see evidence of good decisions all around you when you are here in Rosemary Beach. We also hope you DON’T see a few of them, as part of our goal is to make it look easy, like it has always been this way. Sometimes we can’t make it look, or sound, easy - and we appreciate your patience in those cases!
Number 2: GREAT EXPECTATIONS
THE REALLY IMPORTANT STUFF
This is perhaps the most interesting of the list… we are constantly trying to raise the bar and do more. More to protect the beaches, more to entertain owners, guests and visitors, keeping them out of their cars and here in our town. More with less, and faster than last year. But there is also accomplishment in simply getting the basics done better than anybody else. It’s a good thing for success to make us aim high, but we have to simultaneously avoid tripping over the little things down at our feet… like keeping this town clean and tidy. We can vouch for the fact that the many volunteer leaders and the professional staff of the POA are glad to be a part of Rosemary Beach, and we want to sweat both the big and small stuff.
Number 1: MAKING GOOD DECISIONS When it comes to town-building, making long-term decisions that bear fruit can be tedious and at times, painful. And this is number one on our list for good reason - without good leadership and good decisions, our success will slip from our grasp. Making a decision to not just fill a pothole, but to fully remove the road base, regrade a street and reinstall
TO FIND THE BEACH HOUSE OF YOUR DREAMS ...COME BIKE WITH US
Having said all that, we believe all of these challenges and the many others that come with success are worth every bit of the trouble, in some part because we want to honor those that came before us by keeping watch on the vision and all doing our small part to plant the seeds of tomorrow’s success.
Before we close, there is one vitally important thing that any visitor to the beach must remember – please be safe in the water and heed the warning flags posted by the South Walton Fire District lifeguards. There is a flag located here in Rosemary Beach at Walkover “I” (near the west end of our beach) as well as a flag at the public beach access on our eastern boundary at Winston Lane. The lifeguards are well-trained professionals, constantly monitoring the water conditions and weather forecast to provide the most accurate and timely water and surf information possible. Feel free to ask them questions, and please listen to them if they offer you or your family advice about staying safe. When they post a red flag - they are giving you the advice to stay out of the water. To learn more about the surf flag program, please visit www.swfd.org We are proud of our town, and we welcome your thoughts on how to protect and enhance it. The Ancient Horticulturist Garden P’s: Pets and Perennials by Susan Broussard
What does your garden include? Plants, yes, but what do you have to enhance the garden experience? Do you have quiet soothing sounds of a fountain or wind chimes, garden decor as in a bottle tree blossoming with an array of cobalt blue bottles to keep the haunts at bay or perhaps a row of white washed tires lining your driveway? Don’t judge! In my opinion, of all the wonderful non-plant things to include in your green space, the most important is a garden pet. Something that moves without the benefit of the wind. Perhaps something that moves on four legs. Our garden pet is a garden cat. Now before you go ballistic on me, I know the problems of an outside cat. They are bird hunters, lizard murderers, dog teasers. I also know that they don’t come when called, don’t care what you think of them, don’t see the problem with walking across your face at 2:00 in the morning. I know all of the negatives but let me assure you that most of those traits do not belong to our cat. He’ll have nothing to do with birds, lizards or dogs. The
Blue-eyed Grass, star of the Spring garden / Photo by Larry Broussard
reason is simple. Dusty is ancient: moving into his 22nd year, slowly and quietly. With that you’d think that he’s noble and wise. Ready to pass along sage advice to the local kitten population. You know - Stay in school! and Don’t do drugs! Unfortunately for our younger feline crew, he’s just very old, very stationary and just a little cranky. In his younger days, a walk through the garden was viewed from the roof, Dusty’s favorite perch. Some garden felines will follow and protect you from stealthy butterflies or menacing dragonflies; the proverbial bug bodyguard. Dusty chose to observe and possibly warn us, maybe, if he saw any danger crossing our path. Through his sleepy cat eyes, we were observed and noted. Now in his later years, his main garden responsibility is to be a carbon-based solar energy storage cell. Solar batteries have nothing on him. But he’s our solar energy storage cat and we love him. In the picture, you can see him providing another vital garden skill. He’s a plant marker. I was hoping he would participate by showcasing one of my favorite perennials. However, being
Dusty, the garden cat. Photo by Susan Broussard
a cat, he chose instead to radiate between the tomatoes, herbs and bottle tree. So be it. Therefore, let’s move on to one of my favorite perennials and the highlight of this article, Sisyrnchium or Blue-eyed Grass. This native is actually not a grass but a member of the iris family and offers that elusive true blue that is so hard to find in the garden. I always look forward to the appearance of the star-like flowers mid spring. The Blue-eyed Grass in my garden is mixed in with the Liriope ground cover where it grows quietly along the brick path. Quietly is a good word for this plant. It does not slap you in the face with bright intense color but enhances the garden experience with tranquil, subdued azure. It is very Zen. Blueeyed Grass likes sun or part shade and moist soil, perfect for a pond’s edge. Mine grows along the brick pathway that leads to the detention pond in another part of the garden. Even though it prefers moist soil, I have never needed to break out the hose, probably due to it being located in partial shade. However, I also must admit that I added copious amounts of compost when planting.
The plant produces a 12 to 20 inch mound of grassy strap like leaves before stalks rise slightly above the greenery to share the multitude of half-inch flowers. There are several varieties found in the Eastern United States but the variety in the picture is Sisyrnchium augustifolium. Blueeyed Grass can be found at nurseries specializing in native plants but not all areas are lucky enough to have a garden establishment that carries natives. However, if you live in or near Rosemary Beach, you are one of the lucky ones. 7 Pines Native Plant Nursery in DeFuniak Springs has 320 species of plants available and Blue-eyed Grass just so happens to be one of them. Their Facebook page includes a picture of their garden cat so they must be a fine upstanding establishment. I always look forward to the Blueeyed Grass blooms. It’s not the first flower to peak out in the spring but as the blue buds arise above it’s grassy leaves, I know Winter is gone. The time to appreciate the presence of Spring has arrived. Time to lie down in the grass and let the sun radiate off my old bones. Just me and Dusty.

usic in Pictures by Liza Snyder, Art Specialist, Bay Elementary School
O
ver 4,000 students participated in the 7th Annual Music in Pictures (MIP) presented by the Rosemary Beach Foundation. This educational art initiative is open to all students in grades K-12 in the Walton County school system. The project allows our students to pull completely from their imagination. As art teachers, most of our lesson plans involve a study on an artist or art history, then a guided project. Students incorporate unique elements into their artwork during each project, but the Music in Pictures curriculum introduces complete freedom of choice in their works. As music fills the room, students close their eyes together, focus on listening to the song, and then are encouraged to open their eyes and quietly sketch what they have imagined. They are gently reminded: "no peaking at your neighbor's work!" This beautiful process grants them permission to use their best judgement and personal choice on subject matter, composition, color and expression. The results are always astonishing and their art comes alive! “I can see and feel how listening to the classical compositions chosen for MIP have a tangible effect on my students,” says Constance Rogers, art specialist at Van R. Butler Elementary School. “Sometimes they get up and dance around the room (which I encourage). I often find a student in tears, due to a sad emotional response to a particular
composition. When discussing ideas and preliminary sketches with my young artists they speak of specific memories and experiences evoked because of the music. Regardless of the response, the inspiration and motivation caused by the coupling of classical music and the visual arts allows a multitude of doorways to open from which creative insight and artistic works of great imaginative power are the culminating product.” One of Pablo Picasso’s most famous quotes is this: “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” The children in our classrooms already consider themselves artists (they are!). Our experience, as school art teachers, is that Rosemary Beach Foundation’s Music in Pictures program is an experience that furthers their individual expression and personal growth as artists. We know the lessons and conversations we have in the classrooms will carry over into their dayto-day lives, and hopefully allow them to remain artists as they grow older! It’s both an honor and pleasure to share this curriculum in our local schools. Created in collaboration with professional musicians and university faculty, Music in Pictures also includes classroom presentations, performances by Florida State University musicians, professional development workshop for teachers and an Awards Ceremony.

How spending time alone
can improve your skin.
by Michael Jordan
“In 1654, scientist and philosopher Blaise Pascal wrote: “All of humanity’s problems stem from man’s inability to sit quietly in a room alone.” A surprising conclusion of a University of Virginia and Harvard solitude study was that people did not show a particular fondness for being alone, no matter their age. In fact, 70 percent of men and 25 percent of women would rather shock themselves with an electronic device than sit alone with their thoughts for 15 minutes. Technology hasn’t necessarily created this inability, but perhaps it encourages it. The study did find that people who were more agreeable or cooperative were more likely to enjoy being alone. And
those who enjoyed daydreaming fared better, too. Psychological Stress. We’ve all experienced it, but it can also be a silent killer. Psychological stress stimulates a biological series of events involving the autonomic nervous system. These systems are in place to keep our bodies in balance, but chronic stress can result in chronic immune dysfunction and DNA damage—in any and all of our organs. That is, the stress from doing your taxes can trigger a similar biological response as a gazelle’s running from a lion. It can worsen inflammatory skin diseases, reduce barrier recovery, impact skin immunity, and dehydrate us—leaving our skin looking with blotchiness, redness, breakouts and wrinkles. The Good News. Mindfulness meditation as a form of mental training aims to reshape our relationship with our own thoughts, allowing them to occur without
attaching or reacting to them. It may even retrain the mind to steer thoughts into a more pleasant direction. In the U.S., we’re currently spending only 17 minutes a day relaxing and thinking as a leisurely activity. With the summer being here, you already know or have experienced mindful meditation. When you are sitting at the beach, looking at the sunlight dancing across the tips of the waves, when a peaceful sensation envelopes you. Your mind ceases to think about work, bills or the daily toxic stresses that get to us. When you let your thoughts drift like that distant sailboat on the horizon, you might remember a childhood of eating ice cream, playing at the beach in the sand or riding your bicycle with your friends. You are only observing your memories or thoughts, not interacting with them. That is a perfect example of mindful meditation.
Now for the training. Sure, it's easy to “day dream” at the beach. You have no schedule, no responsibility (except for sunscreen). So, how do you incorporate mindful meditation into your daily life? With practice. Taking a 15 minute walk during your lunch break not only adds exercise to your routine, but it also allows you to step out of your usual setting and just be with yourself and your thoughts. Enjoy these few short weeks of summer to rebalance yourself. Take time alone with yourself, or better yet, share a quiet walk with your children. Teach them self-care so they may live happier and healthier lives, using ours as an example. No Worry Fabrics for a Crisp and Clean Beach House by Paige Sumblin Schnell
L
et’s talk fabrics. Choosing fabric materials and colors for your beach property can be a daunting decision. Beach houses beg to be filled with light colors that reflect the natural coastal shades of sand, shells and sea. However, we also want our fabrics to stay clean, crisp, and airy—even after years of use. Many homeowners are hesitant to use white fabrics out of fear that sand, sunscreen (the worst), coffee, wine, crayons and more are just waiting to irreperably stain them. The top two questions we hear when selecting fabrics is “Will it hold up?” and “Is it cleanable?” Now, our answer is yes and yes. In the past, washable cotton slipcovers were the best option but now we have performance fabrics. What is a performance fabric? Performance fabrics are durable yet comfortable fabrics that are stain resistant, fade
resistant, and when used outdoors, weather resistant. Sunbrella has been around for years, but now Crypton and Inside Out have added additonal choices to the market. What do performance fabrics do that is different than washable cotton fabric? Sunbrella and Inside Out can be used indoors and outdoors and they are both cleanable and washable. I have lived with a white Sunbrella slipcovered sofa in my home for years that I have washed and bleached over and over and it still looks new. Crypton is an indoor fabric that has the amazing ability to create a barrier from staining. If you spill wine on your Crypton sofa cover, it does not absorb into the fabric. The wine sits on top of the fabric and you can blot it off with a paper towel—it is really magic. I mean seriously, red wine just blots off? Yes.
How does this change the design of beach homes? Now, you don’t have to be scared of white and light colored furniture at your beachhouse. So many client’s walk into our first meeting with photos of all white houses then they say, “I love this, but I don’t think we can live with all white.” Now, you can use white without a worry—grab a glass of red wine and have a seat on your new white sofa and relax. About the Author Paige Sumblin Schnell is an interior designer and the owner of Tracery. She has two retail shops and a design studio. Tracery has been located on Main Street in Rosemary Beach since December of 2003—when Rosemary Beach was still a sleepy little beach town. Over the years Paige has designed homes all over the country, but she has focused on designing beautiful beach homes here along Scenic Highway 30A.

Houston Family Completes Home Makeover
T
here are many stories of families visiting 30A for years on end. They come here for the sugary white sand beaches, emerald waters and ambience of a laid back, yet sophisticated, area. Some of them love it so much that they end up buying a second or third home here. Such was the case with Jud and ZoeAnn Bailey when they purchased their home in Rosemary Beach. “For nearly ten years we had been driving from Houston, usually around the July 4 holiday, because 30A offered so much to us and our three children,” said Jud Bailey. “In 2016 we began looking for our ‘home away from home’ and when we toured a home on West Water Street, we felt like the house had great potential to be a special place,” he said. The Baileys loved the home and its location but knew that a major interior renovation was needed to open it up, providing more living space. They turned to local architect Frank Greene, founder of Greene Design and the town architect for Rosemary Beach. “The exterior of the Baileys home was still contextually correct, yet the interior did pose some incredible opportunities that would increase the living area, improve the kitchen and dining spaces and bring the home current. My main goal was to maintain the integrity of the original home while satisfying the Baileys needs and desires,” Greene said.
by Pratt Farmer After meeting with the Baileys several times, Greene and his design team created an opportunity list, casting a vision for what a redesign might look like. “We had some specific ideas when we began the design process some 18 months ago. Frank was great to work with because he took time to get to know our family and how we lived while at Rosemary. What we appreciated most was the prioritization of our wish list and the creativity needed when not working with a blank canvas. We focused on the removal of walls in some areas and the enclosure of other spaces,” said ZoeAnn Bailey. The new design opened up the living, dining and kitchen spaces to become one large space while enclosing a first-floor screen porch by adding windows all around. Greene liked the spiral staircase leading to the third-floor with four beds, ideal for kids. “I think the spiral staircase is a fun element to have in a beach house. It is a statement about what a vacation home should be, which is free flowing, uninterrupted and almost endless,” said Greene. After an 18 month journey the remodel is now complete and the Baileys have a “new” home in Rosemary Beach—one that fits their lifestyle and will provide a truly blank canvas upon which they will paint many memories.

A Table for the Titans of
New Urbanism “
by Anne Hunter
"I am a lover of classical music, not a musician. I hope to bring music to the ears of all society as I believe it brings happiness and cultural richness to our lives.” Alys Stephens In 2007, grass roots activist, and Scenic Corridor Advocacy Chair and Consultant to Walton County for Scenic Highway 30A, Claire Bannerman was instrumental in securing the scenic highway designation for 30-A. “By forming an alliance, the new urbanist towns will have the opportunity to realize their original vision that began with Robert Davis 36 years ago,” she says. Eleven years later, on Friday, March 9, 2018, as the disquiet caused by spring-break season mounted among locals, twelve titans of the new urbanism inched along slowly in the stream of traffic on Scenic Highway to reach their destination – Caliza Pool at Alys Beach. There, the founders, vice presidents, and managers of the three new urbanist towns situated along 30-A – Seaside, Rosemary Beach, Alys Beach, (and Hampstead to the north), would sit together for the first time since the alliance’s inception, and share a meal. The gathering was reminiscent of the first meals cooked in Seaside in the early 1980s, where a young architect named Ernesto Buch served Cuban comfort food for the original team of architects and designers - when Seaside was still just the brushstroke of a handful of small houses. (Seaside founder, Robert Davis, nicknamed his group the “Night Crew” after their late-night bohemian work habits.)

Now, thirty-six years later, the current leaders have assembled inside the Salon Marocain Loggia at Caliza Pool. Robert Davis raises a glass to toast Alys Stephens for her contribution to the arts, which sets a tone of remembrance for the historical underpinnings of the area.
the Alabama Symphony; whose performance of Beethoven’s EroicaSymphony in the new Seaside Amphitheater was mesmerizing. A storm threatened, but the heavens waited until just after the final notes. And then the deluge created its own climax to the evening.”
“Here’s to Alys Stephens, whose spirit lives on in this beautiful place and in this gathering to discuss both music and community. Alys was a strong supporter of classical music in Birmingham and Seaside. She arranged for Sam Howard and Dolores Hodges; dual pianists extraordinaire; to come to Seaside. Their recitals for piano - four hands at sunset overlooking the Gulf - stand out as magical memories from Seaside's early years. She introduced us to Paul Polivinick, Conductor of
Coordinated by Alyssa Walker, Marketing Director for Alys Beach, the luncheon was hailed as our region’s inaugural New Urbanist Summit and the brainchild of Andrew Balio. Appointed as Principal Trumpet of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Balio and his wife recently launched The Future Symphony Institute, a think-tank to examine the complexities of making symphony orchestras financially viable while preserving their artistic mission. To this end, Balio hosted a symposium called Building Communities

with Music from March 9th -11th at The Seaside Institute. Balio explains, “The Future Symphony Institute is seeking to orchestrate a Renaissance for classical music; and architecture and urban design will have to figure prominently in that process if we are to renew our role in society. We selected Seaside, Rosemary, and Alys to show that there is a significant movement towards a renewal of various classical architectural styles.” The honorary dignitary at the table was Léon Krier, a founding member of the new urbanist movement and senior fellow at the Future Symphony Institute. As an architectural theorist and urbanist, Krier is an advocate for the role that architecture and urban planning play in human settlement, and how they shape and are shaped by healthy communities. Krier plans for Poundbury in Dorset, England on behalf of HRH Prince Charles, and his influence on Andres Duany Town Planner for Seaside, Rosemary, Alys Beach, and Hampstead - have been a major influence on the New Urbanism and the renewal of classical style. Anna Lowder; founder of Hampstead, the new urbanist town in Montgomery, Alabama; referred to Krier, Davis, and Duany as titans in a social media post. “Really, I was just deliberating on how fundamentally important these 30-A communities have been to the New Urbanism movement over the past 30 years. They are the best representation and implementation of New Urbanism principles, and their success from a development and tourism perspective is the evidence of this. We all stand on the shoulders of these minds and their communities.” The three titans were surrounded at the table by Dhiru Thadani (Architect and Urbanist), David Bailey (Town Manager for Rosemary Beach), David Everett (Vice President for Alys Beach), Tom Dodson (Vice President of Sales for Alys Beach),
Rick Helfand (Chair of The Seaside Neighborhood School Foundation), Claire Bannerman (Host of “Our Coastal Art Scene” for Seaside Radio), Joyce Wilson (Artistic Director for the Ogden Museum at Watercolor and Arts & Culture Activist) and Anna Lowder and Harvi Savota (Founders of Hampstead). “We believe the key architects, familiar to the people of 30-A, hold a great deal of wisdom for helping not only orchestras but all arts to be relevant to their communities. The Seaside Institute is a nexus for bringing together people who have their hearts and minds in-sync when it comes to architecture and urban planning that puts people first,” said Balio. Balio enlisted renowned documentarian David Donnelly, director of the hit film Maestro, to capture the magic that occurred during this meeting of minds. For a period of two years, his film crew followed Grammy award-winning conductor Paavo Jarvi and an array of brilliant musicians. “I've been working with Andrew Balio and the Future Symphony Institute for over a year. I have been inspired by Andy's passion to apply the beauty of classical music to other areas of life,” says Donnelly. Duany proposed that the four 30-A communities - Seaside, WaterColor, Rosemary, and Alys Beach form an alliance to protect their culture and to enhance the sophistication of each town, as well as ensuring the protection of the State Parks and State Forests and its 22,000 acres of preserve. He encouraged investing in smaller, localized projects at particular points along the coast, such as transit-oriented improvements between and around Alys Beach and Rosemary Beach, explaining that it will capitalize on current interest and resources and build momentum for more visionary changes over time.
Architectural theorist and urbanist Leon Krier and filmmaker Irene Stillman speak with Rick Helfand, Founder of Seaside School. Krier‘s ideas of bringing back walkable towns in the late 20th century inspired Duany for the design of Seaside, Rosemary Beach and Alys Beach.

Saving Samira
Marine Animal Rehabilitation on 30A by Anne Hunter
S
amira, the stranded bottlenose dolphin, won a second chance at life when she was rescued along the shores of Florida’s Gulf Coast. That morning in October, the McKinnon’s had planned for a seashell hunting adventure along the crystal sands of the Emerald Coast and found a dolphin instead. They did everything right. “It was an awesome and inspiring moment,” said Jennifer and Curtis McKinion. “To be out there, all alone right after a storm and realize that you are all this dolphin has - it was just our natural instinct to do whatever it took to save her.”
Photos Courtesy of Gulf World Marine Institute
Samira’s story began on October 8th, 2017, when Gulf World Marine Institute assisted Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge in the rescue of the stranded female bottlenose dolphin following Hurricane Nate. Samira was found washed up on the beach on Okaloosa Island by the two beach goers who reported the beached mammal to Florida Fish and Wildlife. “Because of their heroic effort, Samira lived,” says Secret Holmes-Douglas, Director of Gulf World Marine Institute. When a dolphin strands itself, it’s their last chance of survival. If it's on the beach, it has come ashore as a cry for help. When you see a beached dolphin or sea turtle, the key is to call us. Don’t try to put it back in the water.”
Gulf World Marine Park has been conducting stranding work since the 1970s. In 2012, the Gulf World Marine Institute was established as a 501c3 to accept donations toward its mission to rescue, rehabilitate and release marine mammals and sea turtles. The Gulf World Marine Park is the largest contributor to the Institute, but another large portion of funding is from grants and individual contributions. The Institute is currently seeking to build an education center in Panama City Beach. “The public can support us in several ways, explains Sam Tuno, Public Relations Manager for Gulf World Marine Institute. “We operate under the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission for our marine turtle permit and

“
The ideal scenario is a successful rehabilitation and release. Our goal is that every animal be returned to their natural habitat.” - Sam Tuno with National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA) for marine mammals. The permits allow us to work with endangered and threatened species that are otherwise federally protected. Unless you have these permits you are not legally allowed to handle them or interact with them.” The marine turtle permit allows the Institute to rescue, rehabilitate, and tag marine mammals and reptiles. "The ideal scenario is a successful rehabilitation and release. Our goal is that every animal be returned to their natural habitat.” As for Samira, she found a new loving home at Gulf World. After ten weeks of rehabilitation, Samira was deemed non-releasable because of her young age and mother dependency. NOAA selected Gulf World Park as her permanent home, three-months after she was rescued. The animal care and training team implemented a socialization plan to introduce her to the rest of their dolphin family - they immediately formed a bond. Gulf World Marine Institute’s work with stranded, sick or injured sea turtles is impressive as well. In January of this year, the Institute rescued more than 1200 cold stunned turtles. When the water temperature in local bays and estuaries dips below 50 degrees, sea turtles can become shocked or stunned by the freezing
temperatures. The turtles were examined by a veterinarian, placed in warm water, and tagged before being released into warmer waterways after the cold snap. On average, Gulf World Marine Institute receives 50-80 turtles; however, this January's rescue of 1200 turtles was the second largest number on record. Fishing entanglements and general illnesses, like pneumonia, are the typical ailments. The man power and cost that goes into marine mammal rehabilitation totals up to $10,000 for the first week of care. Depending on the species, there is a 1 to 10 survival rate. “We learn from deceased mammals by doing necropsies. That is what we respond to mostly. You always want to do what you can and in those tragic scenarios, it’s best to gather that info and apply it to a greater cause,” explains Lauren Albrittain, Stranding Coordinator of Gulf World Marine Institute. The Institute works with local piers and fisherman in case they accidentally hook a turtle. Their stranding coordinator expert advises, “Don’t cut the line, instead ask pier attendants to help bring the turtle in and call the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission at 1-800-404-3392. This how you can save their lives.”
“This memory will stay with us forever. Seeing Samira again at Gulf World Park, assured us that we made the right choice. We got to pet her, feed her, and give her lots of kisses. It was almost as special as the day we saved her,” the McKinons said.
TURTLE SAFE FLASHLIGHT FILTERS
A volunteer rescues a sea turtle.
Turtle Safe flashlight filters are a fun and innovative way to deal with a growing problem: light pollution on turtle nesting beaches. Each filter has an adhesive back for easy application to the lens of your flashlight. Flashlights with Turtle Safe flashlight filters cast a red silhouette of a sea turtle onto the ground, making them fun for children. Arix Zalace started Turtle Safe Products, a company specializing in turtle protection and free flashlight filters, in 2005. The animal activist founded the company because of lighting issues on beaches. “Sea turtles are creating the spawning beds for our seafood it’s tied into our environment – our economic drivers – an ecosystem." Aldo Leopold said that the first rule to intelligent thinking is to realize that every piece plays an important role and to think that you can take one piece out and it won't affect the others is naïve. "It’s good to love the animal but also to understand its importance in our community beyond just being humane.”
DO’S AND DON'TS OF PROTECTING SEA TURTLES Courtesy of Arix Zalace - Turtle Safe Products
DO NOT shine any light on the sea turtle and/or its face. The light may cause the female to abort the nesting process, or other sea turtles nearby may be discouraged from nesting if there are lights on the beach. If you are using your turtle safe filter over the lens of your flashlight, you should still refrain from shinning the light directly at the face of an adult or a hatchling. DO watch from a distance. Stay clear and out of sight of the turtle. Stay behind the turtle and remain as still and quiet as possible until she begins laying eggs; otherwise you may scare her back into the sea. DO NOT take pictures using a flash, including camera phones. This high-intensity light can be even more disturbing than flashlights. DO NOT touch or handle the sea turtle. In addition to being illegal, you may injure the turtle or cause her to leave without completing the nesting process. DO NOT stand in the turtle's path to the ocean. DO NOT handle sea turtle eggs or put anything into the nest. You can introduce bacteria or injure the eggs. DO watch from a distance and remain quiet and still if you encounter hatchlings emerging from the nest. Keep all lights off. DO leave the hatchlings in their nest and allow them to emerge and crawl to the water on their own. Scientists believe this crawl to the water is important and imprints the location of that particular beach on the hatchlings brain. Adult female turtles will return to the same beach they hatched from to lay their eggs. DO NOT disturb tracks left by adult or hatchling turtles. Researchers use the tracks to identify the species of turtles that nested, as well as to find and mark the nests.

Fireworks light up the sky in a star spangled display beginning at 8:45 pm on the beach. Sponsored by the Rosemary Beach Property Owners Association. Blankets and lawn chairs are welcome.
