Meet Mooshi!

Photos by Chelsi Barber

Parent: Chelsi Barber Breed: Persian Age: 2 Years

Mooshi is proof that the biggest hearts sometimes come in the smallest packages. At just three months old, she was found in poor condition after being abandoned in a home full of neglected animals. In urgent need of medical foster care, she arrived in our lives when she needed help the most. After only a few hours with her, we knew she was meant to be part of our family. Since then, Mooshi has done nothing but exceed expectations. She has grown into a healthy, happy and incredibly fluffy two-year-old who shows us every day that resilience and love can work wonders. She’s an adventurous traveler who has joined us on several trips. No matter where she goes, she charms everyone she meets with her sweet personality and endlessly soft fluffs. When not out and about you can almost always find her in her favorite window hammock watching the birds and soaking up the sun. Mooshi makes the puurfect Pensacola pet because she’s evidence of what can happen when the Pensacola Humane Society and community come together to provide the care these animals desperately need. How did you and Mooshi come into each other’s lives? Mooshi came into our care after we were informed that medical fosters were needed for a large rescue of 50+ cats and dogs at a single residence. With both HOPE Animal Rescue and Pensacola Humane Society involved, lots of volunteers and fosters were needed. As soon as we got the call we knew we had to help in any way we could, and the moment we saw this sweet girl we knew she was ours. What inspired Mooshi’s name? We named her Mooshi because her face is smooshy/squishy. What are some of your and Mooshi’s favorite Pensacola spots? Any special memories? Mooshi honestly loves to just be with us, but she definitely gets really excited when she sees a Starbucks drive thru. She’s a pup cup queen and will hop right up front to greet her favorite baristas. Can you tell us a little more about the photo you submitted? This was from our first family outing downtown after the Palafox street construction was complete. We had a nice walk after stopping off at the farmers market and Fosko for coffee. How has Mooshi become an important part of your family? Mooshi provides the harmony in our little animal kingdom. With two other sisters (both with their own very unique and different personalities) Mooshi loves everyone and everything. Meaning she adds zero drama to the mix.

Runners-Up

Blade

Parent: Tori Siddall Breed: Rhodesian Ridgeback Age: 4.5 Years

Meet Blade, a true Pensacola original with a story as bold as his personality. Named after a helicopter rotor blade in honor of his dad, a military helicopter pilot, his name pairs perfectly with his sister Rhoder. Together, they are Rhoder Blade. Rescued from lower Alabama, Blade has fully embraced coastal life and quickly became a familiar and beloved face around town. Whether he is cruising with his head out the window trying to catch passing cars, charming strangers with his signature kisses, or making his rounds for his favorite treat, pup cups of course, Blade lives for adventure. Blade is so much more than a pet. He has a gentle, deeply soulful nature and an incredible ability to sense exactly how you’re feeling. Through both joyful moments and difficult seasons, he has been a constant source of comfort, companionship and love. One of Blade’s sweetest quirks is that he always wants to hold hands. He is constantly offering his paw and is happiest when someone is holding it. It is his way of staying connected, and everyone who knows him falls in love with that part of his personality.

Thumbelina Parent: Kristine Hagwell Breed: Pomeranian Age: 3 Years Thumbelina is truly one of a kind. She came into the rescue where I volunteer as a critically ill 4-month-old Pomeranian with a life-threatening heart condition. The moment I set my tote bag on the floor, she climbed right in and refused to come out, and I knew she had chosen me. After two lifesaving heart surgeries, she beat the odds and has spent every day since spreading joy. Now a happy, healthy 4-pound ball of fluff, Thumbelina has become a familiar face around Pensacola and Gulf Breeze, charming everyone she meets at local events, restaurants and even nursing homes. She loves dressing up and never misses a chance to make people smile. Despite surviving two heart surgeries and a broken leg, she has an incredible spirit and has even helped mentor more than 100 rescue dogs. I truly believe she was sent to bring happiness to everyone lucky enough to meet her.

Pawsitive Nutrition Natural Support for a Healthier Pup

By Dawn Gresko

A

ll pet parents want their pups to live long, healthy and active lives. While a balanced diet remains the foundation of good canine health, many everyday foods — from fresh fruits and vegetables to fish rich in healthy fats — can provide nutritional benefits that complement a well-rounded diet. Pensacola Magazine spoke with local veterinarian, Dr. Melanie Schroeder of Coastal Sunrise Animal Hospital, who offered expert insight on how incorporating fresh, natural ingredients into a dog’s diet can help address specific health concerns and support overall health. When introduced appropriately and under the guidance of a veterinarian, certain fresh foods can help support natural body functions and enhance quality of life for dogs of all ages.

Fresh Foods That Support Canine Health For owners who prefer a whole-food approach over pills or powders, several kitchen staples can provide targeted support for digestion, joints, skin and overall wellness. Blueberries and blackberries are rich in Vitamins C and E and contain powerful antioxidants that help protect cells from damage. These nutrients can support immune function while promoting healthy skin and joint mobility.

Eggs, when boiled or scrambled without butter or seasonings, provide biotin, sulfur and essential fatty acids that contribute to healthy skin and a shiny coat. Raw eggs should always be avoided.

Supporting Joints and Connective Tissue One of the most common reasons pet owners turn to supplements is to support joint health. As dogs age, the cartilage that cushions their joints naturally begins to wear down, potentially leading to stiffness, discomfort and reduced mobility. Large breeds and dogs predisposed to conditions such as hip dysplasia or osteoarthritis may experience these issues even earlier in life. Among the most widely recommended for joint health are glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate. Often referred to as the cornerstone ingredients in joint care, these compounds work together as “chondroprotective” agents, helping to support cartilage health and maintain joint function. They have a synergistic effect, meaning they work as a team to achieve a greater result than either could alone.

Glucosamine serves as a building block for cartilage, the smooth tissue that cushions joints and allows for comfortable movement. Chondroitin helps prevent enzymes from breaking down cartilage, allowing it to retain moisture For dogs watching their waistlines, green beans offer a high- and flexibility. Together, they may help slow the progression fiber, low-calorie option that adds bulk to meals and helps of joint degeneration while supporting mobility and comfort. pets feel satisfied. Similarly, carrots and broccoli provide fiber, nutrients and the added bonus of a satisfying crunch Another supplement gaining attention is collagen, a key that many dogs enjoy. component of connective tissues, including tendons, ligaments and cartilage. PENSACOLA MAGAZINE | 17

“As with all pet related questions, reaching out to your veterinarian for advice prior to starting any new medication or supplement is advised.” - Dr. Melanie Schroeder “High-quality bone broth is rich in collagen and amino acids that protect joint cartilage,” Dr. Schroeder said. “If you want to add healthy moisture to your pet’s diet or soften their kibble at dinner, this is a great way to do it.”

“A small dollop of plain, xylitol-free Greek yogurt is a wonderful way to introduce natural probiotics,” Dr. Schroeder said. “Growing scientific evidence continuously shows that a healthy gut microbiome leads to a healthier pet overall.”

Low-sodium bone broth is an excellent natural supplement for dogs, delivering rich amounts of collagen, glucosamine and chondroitin to support joint health, as well as gelatin and amino acids to promote a healthy coat and gut repair. (Just be certain it is made without garlic or onions, which are toxic to pets.)

Fiber also plays a critical role in digestive health. Natural, whole-food sources such as pumpkin provide soluble fiber that helps regulate bowel movements and supports healthy digestion.

Managing Inflammation Naturally Inflammation plays a role in many common canine health concerns, from arthritis to skin irritation. Omega-3 fatty acids are among the most highly recommended natural supplements for addressing inflammation and supporting overall wellness. Clinical trials show that consistent dosing of omega-3 fatty acids can significantly decrease how often a pet needs traditional NSAIDs like carprofen. Typically sourced from fish oil, omega-3 fatty acids contain two key nutrients: EPA and DHA. These compounds help moderate inflammatory responses throughout the body and may reduce joint discomfort associated with arthritis and other mobility issues. “Look for sardine or anchovy varieties packed in water rather than oil,” Dr. Schroeder said. “These tiny fish are bursting with omega-3 fatty acids, which provide systemic support for the heart and kidneys while notably decreasing joint inflammation.” The benefits of omega-3s extend beyond joint health. They also support cardiovascular function, and many pet parents notice improvements in coat shine, skin hydration and reduced itching after introducing an omega-3 supplement into their dog’s routine.

A Healthy Gut Starts with Digestion Digestive health is another area where natural supplementation can make a meaningful difference. Just like humans, dogs rely on a balanced gut microbiome to support digestion, nutrient absorption and immune function. Probiotics contain beneficial bacteria that help maintain healthy microbial populations in the digestive tract. 18 | JULY 2026

When digestive issues arise, plain canned pumpkin can be a helpful addition. Pure pumpkin, not pumpkin pie filling, contains fiber that can ease occasional constipation while also helping firm loose stools. A healthy digestive system not only promotes comfort but also helps dogs better absorb nutrients from their food.

Introducing Natural Supplements Safely According to Dr. Schroeder, the first question pet owners should ask before deciding to supplement is simple: What specific problem am I trying to address? Natural supplements aimed at supporting joint health, skin and coat condition or digestive wellness may be beneficial when used appropriately. When adding anything new to a pet’s diet, introduce only one product at a time. This approach makes it easier to identify the source of any adverse reactions. Additionally, excessive supplementation can create serious health risks. While supplements are generally safe, giving too much can cause serious, unintended health issues. High amounts of omega-3 fatty acids or zinc may interfere with blood cell function, potentially leading to anemia or clotting disorders. Vitamin D toxicity presents an even greater concern as high amounts can cause dangerous increases in blood calcium levels, potentially resulting in kidney failure, severe gastrointestinal illness or even death if left untreated. Fortunately, the most common consequence of oversupplementation is gastrointestinal upset, including vomiting, diarrhea or decreased appetite. “As with all pet related questions, reaching out to your veterinarian for advice prior to starting any new medication or supplement is advised,” Dr. Schroeder said. “We are always here to help and have the unique clinical knowledge, data and resources needed to guide you and your pets in the right direction!”

Local Human-Grade Supplements and Treats

Contact a clinic immediately if a dog consumes an entire container of supplements, whether intended for pets or humans. The risk depends on the pet’s size, the amount consumed and the specific ingredients involved.

Pet owners interested in incorporating high-quality, human-grade ingredients into the wellness routine of their dogs A particularly important warning involves human prenatal have several local options to explore: vitamins, which often contain concentrated levels of vitamins and minerals that can be dangerous for pets if ingested. Located in Fort Walton Beach, 3 Dogs and A Chick offers homemade treats and chews made with human-grade “If you are ever uncertain about the safety, ingredients or ingredients and provides nutritional counseling for pet potential side effects of a product, simply email, call or text owners seeking personalized guidance. your vet office,” Dr. Schroeder said. “We can investigate the product’s safety and quality standards for you, giving you In Pensacola, Sophie’s PupCake Pantry specializes in total peace of mind before you dose your fur baby.” human-grade dog treats and curated monthly subscription boxes filled with wholesome goodies designed for canine companions. Also in Pensacola, The Barkery offers human-grade treats and food toppers that can be used to complement a dog’s regular diet while providing additional flavor and nutritional support.

Choosing the Right Supplement No matter how promising a supplement or fresh food may sound, every pet is unique. Age, weight, existing health conditions, medications and dietary needs all influence what is safe and beneficial. Exploring Northwest Florida’s Wildlife Sanctuaries

A

Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center 8740 Gulf Blvd., Navarre, FL

Since opening in 2013, the Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center (NBSTCC) has become a hub for conservation, education and community involvement along the Gulf Coast. Founded through grassroots community efforts, the nonprofit’s mission is to protect threatened and endangered sea turtles through research, education and hands-on conservation initiatives.

“Some of the most meaningful moments happen when families learn, explore, and serve together,” NBSTCC Marine Biologist, COO and Animal Team Care Manager Alex Fox said. “At the NBCTCC, we provide opportunities for visitors to connect with nature, discover the importance of conservation, and become part of something bigger than themselves. Every educational program, volunteer hour, and family visit helps create future advocates for our coastal ecosystems.”

At the heart of the center is Sweet Pea, a non-releasable green sea turtle whose story helps visitors better understand the challenges sea turtles face and the difference people can make in protecting them. Community involvement plays a major role in the center’s success. One of its most popular initiatives is the monthly Trash Bash, a volunteer-driven beach cleanup and citizen science program held on the last Saturday of each month. Participants help remove and catalog marine debris from Navarre Beach, collecting valuable data that contributes to broader conservation efforts while helping protect sea turtles and other coastal wildlife. Since its launch in 2013, the program has removed thousands of pounds of debris from local shorelines. The center also offers a variety of volunteer opportunities for adults (ages 18 and older) interested in conservation, including animal care, outreach, special events, visitor engagement and educational programs. As a largely volunteer-powered organization, community support is essential to advancing its mission. For families, NBSTCC offers unique experiences that bring marine conservation to life. Guests can meet resident animals, explore interactive exhibits and participate in behind-the-scenes programs designed to inspire curiosity about the natural world.

Popular experiences include Painting Tortoise Tracks with Safari the African spurred tortoise, where participants create a one-of-a-kind work of art alongside the center’s charismatic resident tortoise and the Honorary Animal Care Team Member program, which provides a behind-the-scenes look at caring for rescued animals. Shark School and the Shark Tooth Treasure Hunt offer additional hands-on opportunities for children to learn about marine life, conservation and the fascinating creatures that call the Gulf Coast home. Whether joining a beach cleanup, volunteering behind the scenes or spending an afternoon meeting Sweet Pea and the center’s animal ambassadors, visitors of all ages can play a role in helping give sea turtles and countless other marine species more tomorrows. The NBSTCC welcomes visitors and volunteers Tuesday through Saturday, operating from 10 am to 4 pm during its summer season (March 1 to October 31) and from 11 am to 4 pm during the winter season (November 1 to February 28). For more information on programs, volunteer opportunities and other ways you can support the NBSTCC, visit navarrebeachseaturtles.org.

Wildlife Sanctuary of Northwest Florida 105 N. S St., Pensacola, FL

For more than 40 years, the Wildlife Sanctuary of Northwest Florida (WSNF) has been giving injured and orphaned native wildlife a second chance. Since opening in 1982, the nonprofit has cared for thousands of animals, from bald eagles, hawks and owls to raccoons, opossums and squirrels. Serving as a wildlife hospital, nursery and educational facility, WSNF rehabilitates injured animals for release whenever possible while providing lifelong care for those unable to survive in the wild. The sanctuary treats nearly 4,000 wildlife patients each year, with spring and summer bringing an influx of young animals and nesting birds. If you encounter an injured or orphaned wild animal, WSNF accepts wildlife intakes seven days a week from 8 am to 5 pm and encourages residents to call ahead for guidance. Beyond its rehabilitation efforts, WSNF serves as an important educational resource for the community. The sanctuary is home to dozens of non-releasable resident animals, including bald eagles, hawks, owls, vultures and seabirds, offering visitors a chance

Sandspur Wildlife Sanctuary

2990 Paso De Vivoz, Navarre, FL

While many wildlife organizations focus on educational programs and visitor experiences, Sandspur Wildlife Sanctuary (also known as Sandspur Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation) makes its impact largely behind the scenes through the rescue, treatment and rehabilitation of native Florida wildlife.

and anesthesia capabilities. These tools allow the team to provide specialized care for animals suffering from serious injuries and illnesses, with the ultimate goal of returning them to the wild.

Based in Navarre, the federally and state-licensed rehabilitation center specializes in caring for injured and orphaned birds of prey, including bald eagles, hawks and ospreys, while also treating smaller mammals such as raccoons and opossums.

The organization is led by longtime conservationist Anna Hackney, a Florida Master Naturalist and authorized gopher tortoise agent with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Under Hackney’s leadership, Sandspur’s work extends beyond wildlife rehabilitation through partnerships with organizations such as Audubon Florida and the Panhandle Terrapin Project to monitor nesting habitats and help protect vulnerable coastal species throughout Northwest Florida.

Operating from a private facility, Sandspur is equipped with advanced medical resources rarely found in smaller wildlife centers, including digital X-ray technology, in-house diagnostics, endoscopy equipment

Sandspur also serves as an important resource for local residents who encounter injured or orphaned wildlife, providing guidance, rescue assistance and emergency care when needed. Although the sanctuary is not open

for public tours or drop-in visits, its influence reaches far beyond its private rehabilitation facility. Much of its conservation work happens quietly, through countless hours of medical care, rehabilitation and release efforts that help preserve the wildlife that makes our region unique. Those who discover injured or orphaned wildlife are encouraged to contact Sandspur Wildlife Sanctuary or the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission for guidance before attempting a rescue. Rescue Me Photos by Guy Stevens

Every year, the Pensacola Humane Society (PHS) cares for thousands of dogs and cats in need. These dogs and cats need loving homes through no fault of their own. They all have a story, and they all wait patiently for a second chance. That’s where the community comes in. Not only does adoption save the life of an animal in need, but it’s also more affordable than buying from a breeder. Plus, most shelter pets are already spayed, neutered and vaccinated. Research also consistently shows that pet ownership reduces stress and loneliness, though anyone who’s ever had an adoring dog or an indifferent cat could have told you that. Meet this year’s batch of super model pets. Maybe one of them is yours?

Mayor D.C. Reeves Named to Board of Trustees at U.S. Conference of Mayors Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves was elected to the Board of Trustees of the United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) at the group’s 94th annual meeting in Long Beach, California in early June. It is the first time in the Conference’s history that a Pensacola mayor has been named to the Executive Committee of the organization, which was established in 1932. As one of these 12 national Trustees, Reeves will help set the organization’s national policy agenda, federal advocacy strategies and legislative priorities. Reeves previously served on the USCM Advisory Board and as the chairman of the standing Committee on Jobs, Education and the Workforce. The USCM is the official, nonpartisan organization representing cities with populations of 30,000 or more. “To have Pensacola seated at the decision-making table as one of only 12 Trustees nationwide is an incredible honor and a massive win for our community,” Reeves said. “Being the smallest city among this leadership group proves that our innovative approach to growth, economic development and infrastructure is breaking through nationally.” The USCM was founded during the Great Depression, when in 1932 Detroit Mayor Frank Murphy invited mayors from across the country to unite and address the urgent challenges facing their communities during one of the nation’s most difficult periods. Twenty-nine mayors responded, joining together to call on Congress for federal 40 | JULY 2026

relief. Their collective advocacy helped prompt action from both Congress and the White House, resulting in the passage of measures that delivered critical assistance. That initial gathering galvanized the participating mayors to formalize their efforts. In February 1933, they established the first Conference in Washington, D.C. Today, the Conference serves as a leading national voice for cities, convening mayors from across the country to engage directly with the White House, federal agencies and Congress to ensure urban priorities are reflected in national policy.

funding discussions and national policy conversations, particularly around issues such as housing and affordability. Through its partnership with the Conference, Pensacola gains direct access to federal leaders, innovative municipal strategies, and early insight into competitive grant opportunities. These connections have helped drive significant progress across the city, including securing millions in grant funding, advancing the Hollice T. Williams Greenway project and supporting the growth of high-quality jobs at the Port of Pensacola.

Now representing more than 1,500 cities nationwide, the Conference continues to shape federal dialogue on the issues most pressing to cities and municipalities. Its Executive Committee, composed of senior leadership and 12 Trustees, oversees governance and directs the organization’s national advocacy before the President and Congress. While leadership appointments carry national prestige, their greatest value is the tangible impact they can deliver locally. For Pensacola, a leadership role ensures the city’s priorities as a mid-sized coastal community are represented in federal

With its move into the highest tier of USCM leadership, Pensacola gains unprecedented access to federal decisionmakers, early insight into upcoming infrastructure grant opportunities and a direct role in shaping policies that benefit local neighborhoods. “In a time of national political division, this bipartisan organization proves that local leaders can pull in the same direction to deliver results,” Reeves said. “We aren’t just participating in the national conversation anymore; Pensacola has a permanent seat at the table.” For more information on the United States Conference of Mayors, its programs or leadership, visit usmayors.org.

O

wning a home brings a strong sense of pride, responsibility and value, leading many homeowners to constantly look for the best ways to protect and enhance their investments. While some improvements simply look good, others deliver real long-term value. Projects that enhance curb appeal do both, boosting pride of ownership today and perceived value tomorrow. Exterior upgrades rank among the highest-return improvements in the latest Zonda 2025 Cost vs. Value Report, underscoring why investing in a house’s facade is one of the smartest decisions a homeowner can make. That impact goes beyond mere appearance. Strong curb appeal signals quality, care and proper maintenance. Flat, uniform exteriors tend to blend in while a well-designed exterior suggests a well-maintained interior, helping increase buyer confidence and reinforcing the home’s market value. “Today’s homeowners and buyers are placing greater emphasis on exterior design that feels intentional and wellcrafted,” said Sarah Lograsso, director of marketing and product management, roofing and stone at Westlake Royal Building Products. “Incorporating materials that add depth and visual interest can make a meaningful difference in both curb appeal and perceived value.”

50 | JULY 2026

With National Homeowners Month serving as the perfect time to evaluate your property, these exterior upgrades can help enhance curb appeal while delivering a strong return on investment:

Install a New Garage Door Often taking up a large portion of a home’s exterior footprint, a modern garage door can drastically change the overall look. It’s one of the highest-return exterior upgrades, delivering a 267.7% ROI while also improving energy efficiency, enhancing security and supporting modern technology integration.

Add Stone Veneer Manufactured stone veneer is one of the most effective ways to elevate curb appeal, adding texture, depth and a high-end architectural feel. Applied to entryways, columns or lower facades, it can help break up flat exterior surfaces and create visual interest, which are details that stand out in any neighborhood. This upgrade delivers a strong return with a 207.9% ROI. Engineered to withstand weather while maintaining its appearance, options from Westlake Royal Stone Solutions, including Eldorado Stone, Cultured Stone and Dutch Quality Stone, make it easy to achieve a natural, upscale look across a range of home styles.

term performance benefits. Options like the V-Groove profile from Celect Siding provide a refined finish while delivering added resistance against water, dirt and mildew. Available in a range of colors and styles, it’s designed to complement both modern and traditional homes.

Upgrade Entertaining Space Outdoor living spaces continue to grow in popularity, and a refreshed porch or deck can significantly boost a home’s appeal. While returns vary, wood and composite deck replacements remain strong investments, adding functional square footage for entertaining and relaxing, perfect for celebrating homeownership during the summer months. Creating strong curb appeal comes down to choosing exterior elements that work together to enhance both design and value. When these details are considered holistically, they can meaningfully elevate a home’s overall presence and long-term appeal.
