UNCORKED

The Curious World of Wine By Hilary Towns

J

Drink With Intention anuary in Pensacola is a funny little season.

We get to pull out the sweaters and enjoy a brief reprieve. A sense of quiet is suddenly, but fleetingly achievable. The holidays are behind, the calendar is back to normal and many people start thinking about balance, health and simplicity. How can wine fit into this idealized perception of the coming year? Some people adhere to Dry January. Others are more forgiving. There is no doubt that celebrations halt for a moment before Mardi Gras is in full swing. Why not take this time to drink with intention? Focus on a style, region or grape and dig deep into its expressions. Here’s the surprising truth: drinking less can actually lead to drinking better–more meaningful, more interesting. This isn’t about rules, guilt or turning wine into homework. It’s about rediscovering why we enjoy it in the first place.

J.J. Prüm Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Spätlese A wine style that Karen MacNeil, author of The Wine Bible, describes as frozen sunshine, I cannot think that this perfectly harmonious example of the laser-edged, chiseled white wine from the northern reaches of viticultural possibilities does not belong on your January drinking list. Say that you dislike sweet wine all day long, but I dare you to try this wine and not find it mesmerizing and utterly pleasurable. A wine that can take itself from low alcohol daytime sipper to a serious contender for the best food pairing companion that you have ever met. Put it with a simple bit of moderately spicy Thai cuisine and tell me there is something better that you could be drinking right now. I highly doubt it.

Michel Magnien Fixin

Michel Magnien is a wonderful introduction to Burgundy, France for anyone curious about the region that made When wine becomes an everyday habit, it can slip into the vineyards famous. His wines from Fixin (pronounced Fee-Sahn) are especially inviting. Fixin sits just north of background. A glass gets poured while cooking dinner, Gevrey-Chambertin, one of the most famous villages, another while watching TV, and suddenly the bottles are and often flies under the radar, which means you get empty without much thought. Instead of refraining, simply classic Burgundy character without the astronomical price refine. Stop to notice the smell. Don’t stop smelling until it tag. Magnien’s Fixin is made from pinot noir and offers ceases to allure. Only then, take the first sip. Register your everything people hope for in a contemplative red wine: impression. Nothing else matters. Allow the wine itself to bright red cherry and raspberry flavors, a subtle earthiness be the experience. and a gentle savory note that makes it incredibly food friendly. It’s elegant but not fragile, structured but not Taste buds get tired, just like we do. Drinking the same heavy. This is a wine that feels special without demanding styles—or even worse, the same wines—can dull the palate deep wine knowledge. It feels like a cozy, oversized over time. Wines start to blur together. Everything tastes sweatshirt on a day spent with an easy novel. For someone fine, but nothing tastes exciting. Taking a break or simply cutting back gives your palate a reset. When you come back, new to Burgundy, a bottle of Michel Magnien Fixin is an easy way to experience the charm of the region and the flavors seem brighter. Acidity pops. Aromas jump out understand why pinot noir from this part of France has of the glass. Some wines can suddenly taste better, even though nothing about the wine itself has changed. Others no such a devoted following. longer uphold the appeal that they once commanded. Drinking less often tends to shift how we drink. Instead of finishing a bottle because it’s open, we’re more likely to savor a single glass. That naturally encourages wines that shine in smaller amounts—wines with balance, texture and personality. A thoughtful glass of wine with dinner can feel far more satisfying than multiple glasses poured mindlessly. And in January, when meals are often simpler and evenings quieter, that slower pace effortlessly allows us to lend this time to savoring the enjoyment. Here are three suggestions for wines that just may make your mind expand to make room for the best year yet in your wine journey. They are not inexpensive daily drinkers, but they are great examples of the most classic wine styles in the world, and when mindfully drinking less, why not make the wines that are consumed among the best. 10 | JANUARY 2026

2010 R. Lopez de Heredia Viña Tondonia Reserva

Let me introduce a wine of age, oak and tradition. The 2010 R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia Reserva is a classic Spanish Rioja that’s surprisingly approachable, even if you’re new to aged wines. Made mostly from Tempranillo with small amounts of Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo, at 15 years old and from an exceptional vintage, it has a richness and complexity you can taste in every sip. With aromas of dried cherries, vanilla and spice, balanced by bright acidity. It is a great bottle for a California wine lover that wants to explore the world of aged European wines. There is enough fruitiness to be familiar, but it is layered with savory notes like tobacco, leather and herbs.

WHERE ADVENTURE MEETS PURPOSE Mountainfilm on Tour Returns to Pensacola By Morgan Cole

A

dventure is coming to town, bringing a fresh wave of inspiration to Pensacola. Returning for its sixth season, Mountainfilm on Tour will bring a curated selection of thought-provoking documentary films to Pensacola Little Theatre on January 17.

“The Pensacola tour showcases a collection of culturallyrich, adventure-packed and incredibly inspiring documentary films from the annual Mountainfilm Festival in Telluride,” Mountainfilm on Tour Pensacola Co-Director Jacey Cosentino said.

Exploring themes aligned with Mountainfilm’s mission of using the power of film, art and ideas to inspire audiences to create a better world, Mountainfilm on Tour showcases a selection of short films that share powerful stories of resilience, hope and transformation—spotlighting individuals and communities who rise above adversity with courage and creativity.

After experiencing the beauty of the Mountainfilm Festival firsthand during a family trip to Telluride, Cosentino immediately knew it was something that needed to come to Pensacola. In 2020, she teamed up with individuals in the community, including Healthy Gulf Florida/Alabama Coastal Organizer Christian Wagley, to bring Mountainfilm on Tour to Pensacola.

Originating in Telluride, Colorado in 1979, Mountainfilm is a nonprofit organization and documentary film festival that celebrates the stories of indomitable spirit and aims to inspire audiences through the power of film. The unique gathering blends film with art, speakers and discussions to foster connection and inspire real-world change.

Originally established to celebrate the mountains and outdoor adventure through short film screenings that inspire attendees to engage with the natural world, Mountainfilm is one of America’s longest-running film festivals.

While the main festival was originally only held in Telluride, Mountainfilm began touring in 1999 to share its films with larger audiences in communities across the globe.

14 | JANUARY 2026

Over the years, the festival's scope has expanded to include a wider range of films and speakers, but the core goal has remained the same—to use the power of film and ideas to educate, inspire and motivate action for a more liveable planet.

North Shore Betty, 2022

Follow The Flower, 2025

What began as a three-day event featuring 27 films in a single theatre has grown into a four-day international gathering, showcasing more than 100 films across eight theatres and welcoming hundreds of special guests.

From daring expeditions in wild corners of the world to heartfelt journeys that tap into the core of the human spirit, Mountainfilm on Tour features breathtaking filmmaking and perspectives that will stay with you long after the credits roll.

Each year after the main festival in Telluride, Mountainfilm hits the road sharing a selection of the year's most inspiring short films with audiences across the world. The Pensacola tour will include a powerful lineup of films celebrating wild places, bold exploration and stories that push the limits of human grit.

“Through stories of resilience, exploration and community impact, the films serve to inspire audiences of all ages to explore new ideas and try new things,” Cosentino said. “The goal is for people to leave feeling inspired, and to open people’s minds and hearts to the world.”

The Pensacola tour will kick off with a special screening of a short documentary film produced by local florist and owner of Fiore of Pensacola, Shannon Pallin. The film is called Follow The Flower, and it explores the life cycle of Alaskan peonies, highlighting the growers’ dedication and capturing how a single bloom has the ability to connect people from the farthest reaches of the earth.

The Pensacola tour kicks off January 17 at the Pensacola Little Theatre at 400 S. Jefferson St. in downtown Pensacola. The doors open at 5 pm, with film screenings beginning at 6 pm. Tickets are on sale for $25 each, and can be purchased online at mountainfilm. myeventscenter.com, or in-person at the event.

“We handpicked 12 to 13 short films from the main festival in Telluride to showcase for the Pensacola event that would not only resonate with, but also inspire the local community,” Cosentino explained. “The films explore a variety of themes and topics, showcasing inspirational stories that focus on community, diversity and the connection between people and wild places.”

Pensacola Opera’s 43rd Season Productions

Verdi’s La traviata and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! Come to the Saenger By Alex Hilkey, Pensacola Opera Director of Advancement

Pensacola Opera will open its 43rd Season with Verdi’s La traviata on January 23 and 25, and close with Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! on March 13 and 15 at the historic Pensacola Saenger Theatre. Pensacola Opera proudly opens its 43rd season with Giuseppie Verdi’s La traviata on January 23 and 25 at the Saenger Theatre in downtown Pensacola. This beautiful production, conducted by Music Director, Cody Martin, and directed by Rebecca Herman from Austin, TX, brings Verdi’s heartbreakingly beautiful score to life with a star-studded cast, lavish sets and dazzling costumes that transport audiences to the elegant world of 19th-century Paris. "Verdi’s La traviata opens our mainstage season, inviting audiences to discover why it remains one of the most celebrated operas of all time,” Pensacola Opera General Director Chandra McKern said. “The combination of Verdi's brilliant music being performed by incredible artists while telling a truly compelling story will thrill opera newbies and longtime fans alike. Verdi's glorious music and Violetta's moving demise make La traviata one of grand opera's most compelling experiences.” Widely regarded as one of the greatest operas ever written, La traviata follows the love story of Violetta, one of the most beautiful and desired courtesans in all of Paris, and Alfredo, a romantic countryboy who lacks the polish and sophistication of Parisian society. When Alfredo’s father, Giorgio Germont, forbids the relationship, Violetta waits for Alfredo to return to her so they can be together again. Fighting tuberculosis, Violetta eventually succumbs to her illness and uses her final breaths to declare her undying love for Alfredo, her lover she never got to have.

16 | JANUARY 2026

The passionate Violetta is played by Pensacola Opera favorite Bizhou Chang–last seen as Mimì in our 40th Season production of La bohème–and her lover Alfredo, portrayed by tenor Andrew Morstein, last seen on our stage in Lucia di Lammermoor in 2024. Chang is a Jan Miller Studio Artist alum and has performed with Pensacola Opera on the mainstage and in educational and community programming for over six years. Morstein was new to the company in 2024, and immediately became a crowd-favorite. He came back to perform in the cabaret crossover series, Opera After Dark, to a sold out audience. Featuring the infamous aria Sempre Libera, La traviata tells a beautiful but heartbreaking story of love, sacrifice and societal constraints that continue to resonate with audiences around the world. The production features a talented cast of new and returning singers, including baritone Dennis Jesse as Giorgio Germont; Jan Miller Studio Artist alum Jack Chandler as the Marchese; J. Taylor Hightower, making his company debut, as Dr. Grenvil; and current Jan Miller Studio Artists Christine Boddicker as Flora, Jason Edelstein as Barone Douphol, Xiaojie Ji as Gastone de Letorières and Denique Isaac as Annina. “As you watch our show, I invite you to be swept away by the beauty of Verdi’s soaring melodies and the effervescent parties, but most importantly, to see the humanity in the woman at the center of it all: her courage, her sacrifice and her fierce, fleeting embrace of life,” Pensacola Opera Stage Director Rebecca Herman said. Pensacola Opera’s La traviata features beautiful set designs by Peter Dean Beck (courtesy of Utah Symphony | Utah Opera), vibrant costumes by Glenn Avery Breed at Wardrobe Witchery,

wigs and makeup by Brittany Rappise at Makeup Wigstress and dynamic lighting by Connie Smith. The production is led by a talented team, including conductor Cody Martin, director Rebecca Herman, production stage manager Alayna Powell and assistant stage manager Nadine Andrews. Our principal cast will join an amazing group of volunteer singers known as the Pensacola Opera Chorus. Led by Cody Martin, the Opera Chorus acts as the ensemble in the production and are essential in bringing these stories to life. This season also continues our long-standing relationship with the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra, who brings the music to life for us from the orchestra pit for each production and dancers from Ballet Pensacola. La traviata promises a grand opera experience that will fill your heart, break it and fill it again with a beautiful score and a timeless story of tragedy and romance. Performances of La traviata will be held on Friday, January 23 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, January 25 at 2 pm at the Pensacola Saenger Theatre. Pensacola Opera will close its mainstage season with one of the most influential pieces of the American musical repertoire—Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! on March 13 and 15 at the historic Saenger Theatre in downtown Pensacola. “We close the season with Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! in memory of Allan Benton,” McKern said. “This timeless masterpiece brings to life a heartwarming and dramatic tale set in the sweeping plains of the Oklahoma Territory. Packed with unforgettable songs and dynamic characters, Oklahoma! is a must-see for theater lovers of all ages, and promises a delightful and unforgettable theatrical experience.” With multiple whistle-worthy musical numbers, beloved characters and a vibrant set, this American feel-good classic is sure to fill seats and hearts. Oklahoma! is conducted by Principal Guest Conductor Jerome Shannon and directed by Artistic Director Corey McKern. “As far as musicals go, it doesn’t get much more operatic than Rodgers’s vocal writing, paired with Hammerstein’s unmatched ability to weave a story through both dialogue and song,” Pensacola Opera Music Director Cody Martin said. “Our cast of incredible actors is headlined by real-life couple Cadie and Jonathan Bryan as Laurey and Curly, making their debuts with us.” Oklahoma! allows audiences to dance back in time with a heartwarming story that follows the blossoming love story between farm girl Laurey and charming cowboy Curly as they navigate rival suitors and the challenges of frontier life. With unforgettable songs like Oh, What a Beautiful

Mornin, People Will Say We’re in Love, the lively Kansas City, and of course, Oklahoma! This Rodgers and Hammerstein classic captures the heartwarming spirit of a community on the brink of change. The production features a talented cast with real-life couple Jonathan Bryan and Cadie J. Bryan–both making their company debut–as Curly and Laurey. Several Jan Miller Studio Artist alum return including soprano Rachel Fitzgerald as Ado Annie Carnes, tenor Micah Perry as Will Parker and bass Ron Dukes as Jud Fry. Timothy Fitz-Gerald is making his company debut as Ali Hakin, and crowdfavorites Emily Pulley and Joe Tomko star as Aunt Eller and Andrew Carnes. Current Jan Miller Studio Artists and the Pensacola Opera Chorus round out the cast with Denique Isaac as Gertie, Jason Edelstein as Ike, Greg Watson as Cord Elam, Xiaojie Ji as Fred, Jordan Svendsen as Slim, Abigail Mallory as Ellen, Christine Boddicker as Kate and Hannah Kivisalu as Vivian. Oklahoma! will truly be a celebration of the performing musical arts in our community. Once again, our principal cast is met on stage with an amazing group of volunteer singers known as the Pensacola Opera Chorus. Led by Cody Martin, the Opera Chorus acts as the ensemble in the production and are essential in bringing these stories to life. The Pensacola Symphony Orchestra joins us in the pit, led by Jerome Shannon. Pensacola Opera’s Oklahoma! will be brought to life with a visually-stunning set, including set designs by Stephen C. Kemp and costumes by Glenn Avery Breed at Wardrobe Witchery. The production is led by a talented creative team including lighting designer Connie Smith, production stage manager Nadine Andrews, and hair and makeup designer Brittany Rappise at Makeup Wigstress. Performances of Oklahoma! will be held Friday, March 13 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, March 15 at 2 pm. "Our 43rd anniversary promises to be one of our most unforgettable seasons, boasting extraordinary artistry with two timeless, emotionally powerful productions," McKern said. Single tickets start at $31, and can be purchased online through ticketmaster.com, by phone at (850) 433-6737 or in-person at the Pensacola Opera Center located at 75 S. Tarragona St. in downtown Pensacola. Tickets can also be purchased through the Saenger Theatre Box Office. Menopause Today Navigating Hormone Therapy and Beyond

By Chesha Flores-Ortega, MD, OB/GYN and Rachel Cerone, MD, OB/GYN Baptist Medical Group - Ladies First

Menopause is a natural stage in every woman’s life, but its effects can be far-reaching. It often brings physical changes, like hot flashes and sleep disruptions, as well as emotional and cognitive shifts that impact daily life and overall well-being. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) works by replenishing estrogen—a hormone that helps regulate periods and bone health—and, when needed, progesterone, which balances estrogen and prepares the body for pregnancy. Both progesterone and estrogen decline during menopause. HRT comes in two main forms: • Systemic therapy: Pills, patches, gels or sprays that circulate throughout the body to ease hot flashes, night sweats and mood changes. • Local therapy: Vaginal creams, rings and tablets that target dryness and discomfort with minimal absorption into the bloodstream. Recent FDA updates reflect growing confidence in HRT’s safety for appropriate candidates. In late 2025, the agency announced plans to remove longstanding “black box” warnings from many hormone products, citing evidence that risks are lower than once feared—especially for women under 60 or within 10 years of menopause onset. 18 | JANUARY 2026

Key advances include: • Transdermal estrogen: Patches and gels may reduce clotting risk compared to oral formulations. • Individualized regimens: Lower doses and newer progestogens can help minimize side effects. • Emerging options: Estetrol (E4), a newer estrogen compound, shows promise for hot flash relief with a favorable safety profile, though long-term data is pending. “Because of a lack of FDA oversight, most compounded preparations have not undergone rigorous clinical testing for safety or efficacy,” Dr. Flores-Ortega said. “Purity, potency and quality can be a concern, and both underdosage and overdosage are possible because of variable bioavailability.”

• Dietary supplements: Evidence for herbal remedies like black cohosh and phytoestrogens is mixed; consult a healthcare provider before use. • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT): Proven to ease sleep disturbances and can improve coping strategies. • Testosterone therapy: Not recommended for treating hot flashes or other symptoms. It hasn’t been shown to help and may cause side effects like acne, unwanted hair growth or changes in cholesterol. In some cases, adding testosterone to hormone therapy for postmenopausal women has been linked to improved sexual function, but it should never be used in premenopausal women. Testosterone alone is not FDA-approved for use in women. • Non-hormonal medications: Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), Serotonin-Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs) and gabapentin can reduce hot flashes. “There is currently one non-hormonal treatment option on the market, and another was approved in October 2025 and is expected to be available soon in the U.S.,” Dr. Cerone said. “Both medications work by targeting neurons in the brain that contribute to hot flashes.” The Bottom Line

Dr. Cerone added, “Personalization is key—what works for one woman may not be right for another. The variety of hormone delivery options allows patients to choose what works best for their medical history and lifestyle.” Balancing Benefits and Risks HRT remains the most effective treatment for hot flashes and genitourinary symptoms of menopause. It also helps prevent early bone loss and fractures. However, it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. Risks vary by age, timing, dose and formulation: • Breast cancer: Slightly increased risk with long-term combined therapy; estrogen-only regimens after hysterectomy may be neutral or even protective. • Cardiovascular health: Starting HRT within 10 years of menopause may lower heart risks; starting later can increase them.

Menopause is a natural transition, but its symptoms don’t have to derail your life. Today’s approach emphasizes education, personalization and choice. Whether through HRT, non-hormonal medications or lifestyle adjustments, women have more tools than ever to navigate this stage with confidence. “Menopause care has changed drastically over the years, with many more women seeking help for their symptoms,” Dr. Flores-Ortega said. “A common phrase I hear in the clinic is, ‘We never used to talk about this, or at least my mom didn’t.’ I’m happy women are reaching out and seeking the care they deserve. What works for one person may not work for the next, and sometimes multiple changes are needed before we find the right fit. The more we talk about this, the more women we can help.” For more information or to schedule an appointment with Baptist Medical Group-Ladies First, visit easyschedule.com.

• Blood clots: Oral estrogen carries higher risk than transdermal options. Beyond Hormones: Alternative Approaches Not every woman can—or wants to—use HRT. Other options include: • Lifestyle strategies: Regular exercise, stress management and cooling techniques may help.

Eggs

One egg gives you about 25 percent of the choline you need daily. Your body uses choline to make acetylcholine, a chemical that carries messages between brain cells. Choline helps with memory and brain cell communication. Eggs also contain B vitamins like B12, which protects nerve cells and regulates mood. Low B12 causes memory problems and confusion. Folate works with B12 to control homocysteine, a substance linked to cognitive decline when levels get high. The tryptophan in eggs helps your body make serotonin, which affects mood, sleep and memory.

10 Brain-Boosting Foods for Clarity, Cognition and Memory By Kelly Oden

Fatty Fish

Your brain is mostly fat, and omega-3 fatty acids make up a big chunk of that fat, so eating fatty fish like salmon, trout and sardines is important for brain health. These fats build and repair brain cells while fighting inflammation and free radicals that damage cells. People who eat fish regularly have lower levels of beta-amyloid, the protein that clumps up in Alzheimer's brains. Aim for fish twice a week. Stick with low-mercury options like salmon, cod or canned light tuna. If you dislike fish, try walnuts, flaxseeds or avocados instead. The omega-3s also help with blood pressure and cut your risk of heart disease and depression.

Blueberries

The compounds that make blueberries blue are called flavonoids. They're antioxidants that protect brain cells and help them function better. Women who ate two or more servings of berries weekly delayed memory decline by up to 2.5 years, according to Harvard researchers. Flavonoids improve blood flow to your brain, getting more oxygen and nutrients to cells and improving concentration, learning and memory. The antioxidants also protect against aging damage. People who eat berries regularly perform better on memory tests. Use fresh or frozen. 20 | JANUARY 2026

COffee and Green Tea

Caffeine blocks adenosine, a brain chemical that makes you tired. That's why it increases alertness and focus. People who consume caffeine regularly also score better on memory, attention and thinking speed tests. Researchers found that people who took caffeine after studying remembered information better the next day. Both drinks contain antioxidants that reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, which drive brain aging. Green tea has L-theanine, which promotes calm focus without drowsiness. Two to four cups daily provide enough benefits for most people without negative effects.

Broccoli

One cup of cooked broccoli gives you more than a full day's worth of vitamin K. Your brain uses vitamin K to form certain fats in brain cells. People who get more vitamin K have better memory and thinking skills as they age. Broccoli also packs antioxidants like vitamins C and E that protect brain cells from free radical damage. The folate supports brain function and links to lower rates of cognitive decline in older adults. The compounds in broccoli may reduce oxidative stress and lower your risk of brain diseases.

Avocado

Avocados are loaded with monounsaturated fats that improve blood flow throughout your body, including your brain. More blood flow means more oxygen and nutrients reaching brain cells. These fats also help you absorb vitamins and antioxidants from other foods. The vitamin E in avocados protects cells from damage and links to slower mental decline and lower Alzheimer's risk. Avocados have more potassium than bananas. Potassium controls blood pressure, which matters because high blood pressure damages brain blood vessels and increases stroke risk. They're also calorie-dense, so you don't need massive portions to get the benefits.

Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate delivers flavonoids, antioxidants and caffeine. The flavonoids improve blood flow to your brain, helping with memory and focus. People who eat dark chocolate regularly perform better on thinking tests. One study found improvements in memory, attention and reaction time two hours after eating it. You need chocolate with at least 70 to 85 percent cocoa to get real benefits. Milk chocolate doesn't cut it. Dark chocolate also triggers feel-good chemicals in your brain.

Nuts and Seeds

Walnuts contain omega-3 fatty acids. A UCLA study found people who ate more walnuts scored better on thinking tests. Almonds have vitamin E, which protects cells from damage and may help prevent memory decline and reduce Alzheimer's risk. Seeds like pumpkin, flax and chia contain minerals your brain needs: magnesium for learning and memory, zinc for nerve signals, iron to prevent mental fog. All nuts and seeds provide healthy fats, antioxidants and vitamins. Eating them regularly helps lower blood pressure and keeps arteries healthy. A handful daily is plenty since they're high in calories.

Turmeric

Turmeric's active compound is curcumin, a strong antiinflammatory and antioxidant. Unlike most nutrients, it crosses into brain tissue and helps reduce brain inflammation, which drives memory problems and cognitive decline. Curcumin fights this directly and may boost a protein that grows new brain cells. People who use turmeric regularly do better on memory tests and show slower age-related decline. Your body absorbs curcumin poorly on its own but black pepper increases absorption by up to 2,000 percent. That's why you see them combined in supplements and recipes. Without the pepper, you're not getting much benefit. Sources: health.harvard.edu, nm.org and hopkinsmedicine.org

Leafy Greens

Leaf y greens like spinach, kale and collards pack vitamin K , folate, lutein and beta carotene. Vitamin K helps form fats that are part of brain cells. Folate lowers homocysteine in your blood. High homocysteine links to cognitive decline and dementia. The antioxidants lutein and beta carotene build up in brain tissue and protect cells from damage. A cup or two of cooked greens or a couple cups raw is enough. PENSACOLA MAGAZINE | 21

A Guide to Quality, Restful Sleep for Winter By Darien Hardy

Although we are well into the winter season, the end of Daylight Savings Time (fall back) is still taking its toll on quality, restful sleep. It’s no wonder that bears spend their winters hibernating in dark caves. Humans, like bears, need more sleep in these colder months. Less light in the day produces melatonin and signals the human brain to want more rest. There is a difference between a quantity of sleep and quality sleep. Normal, restful sleep is more than a nightly break from our daily lives. Normal sleep involves falling asleep quickly, sleeping soundly and waking up feeling refreshed. This type of sleep is an active state that is essential for mental and physical restoration. Sleep disorders can be the cause for “abnormal sleep,” which does not rejuvenate your mind and body. Certain sleep disorders require a diagnostic sleep study, but most are easily identified and treated. Insomnia is a common complaint that is not necessarily a disorder. Many things can cause insomnia, and sleep apnea is one example. Sleep apnea is disordered breathing during sleep usually accompanied by loud snoring and brief periods where breathing stops and limits oxygen to the brain. Sleep apnea is also a risk factor for other medical conditions.

22 | JANUARY 2026

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), the most common form of sleep apnea, is caused by an obstruction in the throat or a narrowing of a person’s upper airway during sleep. A person with OSA will experience pauses in breathing that last from 10 to 60 seconds between loud snores. Central sleep apnea (CSA) is the second major type of sleep apnea. It occurs when a person’s brain does not send correct signals to the muscles that control their breathing. Both forms of sleep apnea can force a person to wake up hundreds of times in the night to breathe, which interrupts rest. Other contributing factors to insomnia include excessive caffeine use, stressful life events, anxiety, pain or other mental health disorders. Insomnia can manifest itself in a person’s daily life through a variety of behaviors. “It [poor sleep] affects everything in life,” says April Heringer, a Northwest Florida-local Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-i). “It affects a person’s ability to communicate and concentrate. It can cause a person some significant difficulties in their interpersonal relationships because they’re irritable. It’s all-encompassing and hits every area of life from being able to focus and do well at work to functioning effectively for your family. Every part of life is a lot harder if you’re not able to sleep.”

There are many behavioral techniques to improve sleep, such as relaxation therapy and sleep restriction therapy. Relaxation therapy involves specific and effective techniques to can be used to ease anxiety and tension so that your body can relax and achieve rest. Sleep professionals suggest two popular methods that help you prepare for sleep with a stress-relieving nighttime routine. First is what some people refer to as a “declassified CIA trick,” which involves using breathing and counting to relax your mind and body. A similar tactic, the “military sleep method,” is often discussed on social media and expands on the CIA trick’s breathing exercises with progressive muscle relaxation and visualizing relaxing scenes or images. Sleep restriction therapy allows people who suffer from insomnia to avoid spending too much time in bed trying to fall asleep. “A lot of people focus on falling asleep immediately,” Heringer explained. “When sleep doesn’t come naturally, somebody may try sleep restriction, which is making sure that they sleep a lot more by going to bed a lot less. What I mean by going to bed is that when they [lay down], that time is not fully dedicated to sleep. If they’re laying in bed for eight hours, and they’re only sleeping for two, then they shouldn’t be laying in bed [the entire time]. Instead, they should lay in bed for closer to three or four hours so that most of their time in bed is then spent sleeping.” When you’re not in bed, avoid doing things like checking the clock, using electronic devices or completing other tasks that may cause stress or alertness. Instead, try guided meditation or simple breathing exercises. You can also read with a book light while listening to soothing music.

After restricting the time in bed, you can start increasing your bedtime as they are able to sleep longer until a more normal night’s sleep is achieved. Generally, healthy adults need at least seven hours of sleep every night. Meanwhile, babies, children and teenagers need even more sleep to fully support their physical and mental development. From mood to heart health to immune function, medical research indicates that getting this amount of sleep has positive effects on almost every aspect of health and wellness. Sleep experts recommend keeping a schedule that follows natural light—sleeping when it’s dark and waking when it’s light. This approach aligns your body’s internal circadian rhythm with your environment, supporting better sleep and overall health. Strive for a consistent sleep schedule because irregular sleep timing has been linked to a range of health issues. “My Holy Grail sleep tip is waking up at the same time every single morning,” Heringer said. “Every single day, you wake up at the same time [because] your circadian rhythm starts on that wake up time. When I was younger, people used to always say you need to go to bed at the same time every night. Bedtime was important. Now, we know that it’s actually quite the opposite. It’s when you wake up in the morning that’s important.” You can create a cozy environment perfect for sleep by harnessing light to your benefit, as well as limiting noise and making up a comfortable bed. Many experts suggest bright light therapy to help reset your internal clock. This therapy involves keeping up with a

“I used to tell people that if you’ve been having trouble sleeping for two to three years, it’s not going to be fixed in two to three nights. It’s something you have to work on.” Just like how your wake up time sets the stage for your circadian rhythm, laying the groundwork for great sleep actually starts during the daytime. The body’s internal clock is regulated primarily by light exposure. Sunlight has a strong effect, so try to take in daylight by getting outside or opening up windows to natural light. If natural light is not an option, you can talk with your doctor about using a light therapy box. Daily exercise has many benefits for both physical and mental health, and the changes it initiates in energy use and body temperature can promote solid sleep. One caveat is that many experts advise against intense exercise close to bedtime, since it may hinder your body’s ability to settle down for sleep. If you do want to move your body before bedtime, try some light stretching or relaxed yoga poses instead.

Certain sleep hygiene habits can be changed immediately, such as optimizing your bedroom environment or trying relaxation methods before bedtime. Other habits may take more time to get used to, such as establishing a new sleep schedule or nighttime routine. For some people, habit changes can bring quick improvements to nightly sleep, but don’t be surprised if it takes more time, especially if you’re trying to break longstanding negative habits. “It’s very methodical, trying to fix something that’s been broken for a long time,” Heringer explained. “I used to tell people that if you’ve been having trouble sleeping for two to three years, it’s not going to be fixed in two to three nights. It’s something you have to work on.” When you start to prioritize rest and wellbeing, the benefits are striking. Obtaining enough consistent, quality rest every night sharpens your mind and increases learning, improves focus and reaction time, protects your heart and cardiovascular system, repairs your cells and releases growth hormones, boosts your immune system, regulates your appetite and so much more. BIOHACKING WELLNESS Ways to Live a Longer, Healthier Life

By Dawn Gresko

T

he human body isn’t a machine, but like anything that works hard, it can always benefit from a little care to keep everything running smoothly and functioning better for the long haul. Biohacking is one science-meets-lifestyle approach to optimizing the wellbeing of body and mind by making changes to one’s lifestyle and biology. All biohacking methods work by influencing the body on a cellular level to reduce the chances of disease and potentially increase lifespan.

Healthcare and wellness professionals often cite oxidative stress as one the biggest threats to our health and lifespan. While we cannot always escape the causes—ranging from inflammation and aging to external environmental factors like pollution and mental stress—we can combat the effects through biohacking. To effectively combat oxidative stress, many people combine biohacking methods. This means adopting wellness plans with clean diets low in processed foods, exercising and meditating to reduce stress, and using therapies like red light exposure to boost antioxidant Biohacking is a broad term for methods that range from production and mitochondrial health. While we will highlight simple changes—like personalizing meals and exercise a number of ways to introduce biohacking into your routine routines—to using more complex approaches, such as using below, it’s best to research each method carefully and always devices like hyperbaric oxygen chambers and supplementing consult with a medical professional before trying any new with popular nootropics like L-theanine and Lion’s Mane, therapy, device or supplement. which help protect the brain from oxidative stress. Pensacola Magazine spoke with one local couple to discuss To understand biohacking better is to understand how it their unique biohacking journey, including what “hacks” affects the body on the cellular level. Below the microscope, they use, and how it has impacted their health and quality biohacking methods work to reduce oxidative stress of life so far. We also consulted with local professionals by lowering the number of free radicals in the body by offering self-optimization services, from infrared saunas and increasing the number of antioxidants to fight them, boost cold plunges to red light and NAD+ therapies, so anyone cellular energy (also called ATP, adenosine triphosphate) in interested in elevating health can further explore the world mitochondria or the “power houses” of our cells, and even of biohacking wellness. influence DNA by improving the length of telomeres (as shorter telomeres are linked to aging and disease).

26 | JANUARY 2026

A Journey Through Biohacking Adrian and Cheryl Russell are two Pensacola residents on a mission to live longer and improve their quality of life. One of the key factors in the couple’s plan was incorporating the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). Adrian already had a very health-focused and active mindset, and this paired with Cheryl’s PhD in Human Capital Development and career studying human performance and reinvention, naturally made both curious about evidence-based methods for improving wellbeing. The pair decided to incorporate HBOT into their wellness plan after reading a 2020 study at the Shamir Medical Center in Israel, which showed that HBOT supports healthier aging, improves cognitive function and encourages cellular repair by improving the length of DNA’s telomeres and removing senescent cells. When they learned HBOT is used worldwide to support recovery, healing and healthy longevity, it aligned with their commitment to staying proactive about health. Although the chamber might seem a little daunting to think of climbing into at first, the potential anti-aging factors combined with physical and mental uplift benefits of HBOT appear well worth the climb. While a person’s typical intake is 21 percent oxygen just by breathing air, HBOT involves breathing in 100 percent oxygen at pressures well above typical atmospheric levels within a self-contained “soft” or “hard” chamber. Soft chambers are made from durable but flexible materials like nylon or neoprene to form an inflatable bag that seals with zippers, capable of going up to 1.3 ATA (atmospheres absolute). Hard chambers are constructed with high-strength steel and plexiglass, and go up to ranges of 2 to 3 ATA. By increasing oxygen availability, HBOT can support cellular and tissue function as well as healthy regeneration in the brain and body. This is because increased oxygen allows for the formation of new blood vessels, an increase in stem cells, a reduction in inflammation, enhancements in antioxidant defense systems and prevention of aging cells.

The Russells first experimented with HBOT at Henry Chiropractic, one of the only locations in Pensacola to offer the therapy, where they determined their bodies could withstand the oxygen and pressure levels. It became apparent to the couple that meaningful results wouldn’t come from a single session, so to make the therapy more accessible and easy to incorporate into a weekly routine the Russells acquired a HBOT hard chamber to use at their home. “The potential benefits extended well beyond one or two outcomes,” Russell said. “We decided to invest in our future healthspan by purchasing our own chamber so we could follow a structured protocol, track our progress and fully commit to the process.” The couple use a hard shell chamber from Oxygen Health Systems paired with two oxygen concentrators to enhance oxygen delivery during each session. The hard chamber is capable of operating up to 2 ATA, which is the equivalent to being 33 feet under water. Pressure is a critical factor when discussing HBOT as many landmark clinical studies demonstrate significant therapeutic outcomes conducted at higher pressures often in the 2 to 3 ATA range. Although hard chambers are more commonly associated with clinical or hospital settings, the couple wanted a chamber capable of delivering higher ATAs for the benefits outlined in the Shamir Medical Center studies, which is only possible with a hard chamber. It’s important to note the safety precautions the Russells took in ensuring the chamber would be appropriate and safe for use in their home. Oxygen is highly flammable so the couple ran tests to ensure the chamber functioned properly and that no leaks were present, which can be dangerous if exposed to a spark. For this reason, electronics are also not recommended when using a chamber on the chance the device creates a spark.

For Adrian, the results were more physically noticeable benefits. After suffering for 3 years from a neck injury and considering spinal fusion surgery to remedy the pain, Adrian wanted to try a HBOT as a more non-invasive option to reduce his pain first. Now, his neck pain has reduced dramatically and he is able to enjoy a better quality of life. Moreover, both cite how sleep has improved as their bodies have found a natural circadian rhythm and both feel more refreshed when waking up. The boost to energy levels also means no desire to reach for another cup of coffee to keep going through the day.

The couple embarked on a 90-day protocol modeled after those used in the longevity and cognitive-aging research referenced in the Shamir Medical Center studies. During their 90-day protocol, sessions last about 60 to 90 minutes and the couple use the chamber five to six days per week. To prepare, the couple avoid oils, fragrances and other nonchamber-safe skincare products and hydrate beforehand. After completing an initial three-month cycle, the Russells transitioned into a maintenance phase to sustain the benefits of HBOT. During maintenance, they reduce frequency to three to four sessions per week, changing to an hour per session. Although there is no universally established guideline on how many times per year a protocol should be repeated, clinicians and researchers commonly suggest one to two full cycles of 90 days per year, depending on individual goals, health status and response to therapy. Ongoing research continues to explore optimal frequency, which is why the pair approach this as a long-term, datainformed journey rather than a one-time intervention. The couple also took note of the subjective results: How did they feel after using HBOT regularly? After eight weeks, Cheryl says 45 minutes into a session now produces something she refers to as “chamber zen,” a clear and focused state where she’s able to access clearer thinking and faster processing.

28 | JANUARY 2026

To determine HBOT’s effect on the cellular level, the couple underwent lab testing by True Diagnostic. They looked at biological age markers, inflammatory indicators and organ system level metrics using advanced epigenetic testing. After completing the 90-day protocol of HBOT, lab values did not improve in a linear way and a few categories actually appeared worse. However, after reviewing the results with clinicians and examining the broader context, several important factors could have an effect on the results: timing of the blood draw, recent physical stress and travel, temporary physiological repair responses and even changes in lab algorithms can all influence epigenetic and inflammatory markers. What did improve or remain stable were the pace of aging metrics and functional improvements they experienced subjectively. In fact, Cheryl’s cellular age appeared 10 years younger than she is. At this stage in the couple’s HBOT journey, the labs don’t suggest that HBOT was ineffective but reinforce the idea that advanced labs reflect a dynamic biological process but do not provide a final verdict. For the couple, the mental and physical results they feel are a huge testament to the efficacy of HBOT. “Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has become more than just a protocol for us,” the Russells said. “It’s a key part of how we’re designing a healthier, more intentional next chapter. And honestly, this is just the tip of the iceberg.” In addition to HBOT, the couple also incorporate other methods into their wellness plan. They lift weights and walk five to six times a week, and follow a Pescatarian diet rich with fish, legumes, fruits and vegetables for the benefits of improved heart and brain health, better weight management and disease reduction. They are also considering alternative ways to biohack, including experimenting with red light therapy using medical-grade LED panels next. For readers interested in learning more about the couple’s journey and the day-to-day reality of using a chamber at home, check out Dr. Cheryl Russell—Fearless After Fifty on YouTube to follow their documented adventure.

Hot and Cold Therapy: Infrared Saunas and Cold Plunges As the Russells mention, HBOT is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to biohacking or optimizing health. Beyond HBOT and simple changes like integrating a healthy diet and exercise, perhaps a more approachable way to enter the world of biohacking is to first experiment with hot and cold therapies with options like infrared saunas and cold plunges. Hot and cold therapies can provide pain relief, reduce inflammation and speed recovery–all of which can be made even more effective by combining the two for overall healing and mobility in what is called contrast therapy. Cold constricts vessels to reduce swelling while heat widens them, improving nutrient delivery and easing tight muscles, so contrasting hot and cold therapies creates a pumping action for circulation and inflammation control. “A large part of what we do is education,” PlungeWorx Pensacola Co-Founder Jon Richmond said. “We spend a lot of time helping people understand how infrared saunas, cold plunges and contrast therapy work, how to use them safely and how to structure sessions based on individual goals whether that’s recovery, stress relief, athletic performance or overall wellness.” On its own, an infrared sauna offers stress relief, detoxification and improved circulation by using light to heat the body directly. Infrared saunas use a range of light frequencies (wave lengths) within the invisible infrared spectrum to produce therapeutic heat. Users report better skin health, potential cardiovascular support, immune system boosts plus improved sleep and mood. These saunas can be categorized by the specific frequencies of infrared light they use: near-infrared (NIR), mid-infrared (MIR) and far-infrared (FIR) with wave lengths ranging from 700 to 3,000 nanometers (nm). Although, most popular are full-spectrum saunas that combine all three wavelengths to offer a broader range of therapeutic benefits.

Infrared saunas operate at a lower temperature than traditional saunas with the ideal level of heat being between 130 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Many beginners ease into the experience with five to 15 minutes at 120 degrees Fahrenheit and build toward 20 to 45 minutes per session, aiming for sessions two to four times per week depending on if you are using the sauna to enhance general wellness, or as a method for detoxification. Increased heart rate and blood flow from heat exposure in these saunas mimics the effects of moderate exercise, improving heart function. Although often linked to cold therapy, heat also plays a role in synapse regeneration that protects against neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. The infrared saunas activate heat shock proteins in the body that not only protect cells but clear waste. All this to say, infrared saunas combat oxidative stress in multiple ways, making it an effective hack for longer lifespan with consistent use being key. On the flip side, there’s cold therapy that ranges from advanced forms like cryotherapy to the straightforward method of taking a cold plunge. Cold plunges offer a more affordable entry point and involve partially or totally submerging yourself in cold water for a few minutes at a time. Gradual adaptation to coldness levels is advised and anyone can start at home by taking cold showers to acclimate to the lower temperatures. Once you’re ready to take the plunge, the best way to do this is by using a tub designed to maintain a steady temperature and to keep calm, controlled breathing throughout the experience. It’s recommended that beginners start at 50 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit for durations of one to five minutes, while more experienced users can soak in waters as low at 38 to 45 degrees Fahrenheit for longer while always monitoring how they feel. Ideally, you’ll want to commit to a maintenance routine of two to four sessions a week. Cold therapy has potential for increasing longevity by activating the body’s cellular recycling system, clearing damaged proteins and improving cell health, while also triggering protective cellular response to improve repair and defense against damage, which slows down cellular aging. results, it is recommended to do weekly infusions then taper off to once a month for maintenance. Under the surface, NAD+ therapy promotes cellular health and energy optimization by supporting DNA repair, cell regeneration, and ultimately, longevity. Externally, after receiving NAD+ therapy, users report better mental clarity, mood and relief from pain.

Red Light Therapy Similar to infrared saunas, red light therapy is another method that utilizes near-infrared (NIR) along with lowlevel red light to stimulate cellular energy in mitochondria to promote healing and collagen production, reduce inflammation, improve hair and skin by enhancing blood flow and cell function. It works by stimulating cell regeneration, preventing cell death and increasing resilience against age-related decline. Photo courtesy of Drip Parlor

NAD+ Therapy Another method for wellness enhancement is supplementing with NAD+: a vital coenzyme found in all living cells that is essential for energy production and DNA repair. Natural NAD+ levels decline with age and this decline is often linked to various age-related conditions like fatigue, cognitive decline and metabolic disorders that disrupt the body’s ability to convert food into energy because of missing enzymes, causing a build up of harmful toxins. “NAD+ helps patients with metabolic function, mental clarity, relief from chronic pain and a ton of other things,” Drip Parlor Pensacola RNs Haley Brown and Ashley Waltz said. “After getting NAD+, patients state they have more energy, focus and feel less stress with an overall better quality of life. Who wouldn’t want that?” Although NAD+ has grown in popularity as a pill-form supplement ranging from 50 mg to 600 mg, delivering NAD+ directly to the bloodstream and bypassing the digestive system means maximum absorption and immediate availability to cells. For this reason, IV (intravenous) therapy and IM (intramuscular) injections have become more soughtafter options. To prepare for either an infusion or injection: hydrate ahead of a session, eat a healthy meal one to two hours prior, plus avoid excess alcohol and caffeine intake for 24 hours leading to the session. NAD+ IV infusions can take four hours or eight hours depending on the dosage and individual tolerance. NAD+ injections can be great for those on time constraints, but do not offer the same higher doses as infusions. Effectiveness can vary by dosing with a full 2,000 mg IV infusion lasting up to a year depending on how the body metabolizes it, while 100 to 200 mg injections can have positive results for a week or longer. CoQ10 injections can help increase the longevity of NAD+ in the body. For optimal and long-lasting

30 | JANUARY 2026

Red light therapy is non-invasive and uses LED masks or panels to direct low-levels of light to the body and penetrate skin. Using medical-grade LED panels can ensure receiving the optimal wavelength and coverage for treatment goals. “Our red light therapy room features medical-grade LED panels designed for full-body exposure, allowing consistent and even light coverage,” Richmond, one of the co-founders of PlungeWorx Pensacola said. For best results, a session should range from 10 to 30 minutes under frequencies ranging from 660 nm to 850 nm. It’s recommended to sit or lie down with the maximum amount of skin exposure possible, refrain from using lotions or heavy skin care, and use goggles for eye protection. To maintain the benefits of red light therapy, it is suggested to undergo therapy three to five times per week. For this approach, consistency is key because benefits cease once you stop the therapy. On the cellular level, red light therapy utilizes nearinfrared light to stimulate the production of ATP, boosting cellular energy via mitochondria, which not only reduces inflammation but enhances cellular repair and protects neurons. This leads to benefits like better skin, heart function, cognitive health and muscle strength, which ultimately supports healthier aging. Although we’ve highlighted red light therapy, infrared saunas, hyperbaric oxygen chambers, NAD+ therapy and cold plunges, these are just a few of the many ways one can choose to optimize wellness for a longer, healthier life. As with anything new, side effects are possible and best avoided by conducting research and consulting with professionals prior to use. While we explored the cellular health and longevity benefits of each wellness hack, the therapies above do possess other benefits to be explored for pain relief, performance enhancement and mental health. No matter what you choose, Pensacola Magazine wishes you a happy and healthy new chapter to 2026.

Project Maeve

City Seeks $86 Million for Major Shipbuilding Complex at Port of Pensacola By Morgan Cole

P

ensacola is pursuing one of the largest economic development initiatives in its recent history. The city has requested $86 million from Triumph Gulf Coast to help finance a large-scale shipbuilding and advanced manufacturing complex at the Port of Pensacola known as Project Maeve—a proposal that would represent one of the largest industrial investments ever brought forward for the downtown waterfront. In the pre-application submitted to Triumph, the city outlines plans for a $250 million ship-manufacturing campus that would add roughly 400,000 square feet of industrial space at the city-owned port. manufacture components for Navy ships and submarines, as well as complete surface vessels, and is projected to support approximately 2,000 jobs over a five-year period. The private partner behind the project, who remains undisclosed, would invest $150 million, while the city anticipates seeking an additional $14 million from the Florida Job Growth Grant Fund. According to the terms outlined in the pre-application, Pensacola would maintain ownership of the facilities and lease them to the company under a long-term agreement.

Although the shipbuilder’s name is not being disclosed at this time, the Triumph Gulf Coast grant application confirms that the company operates globally, has its U.S. headquarters in Denver, Colorado and maintains trusted partnerships with the United States Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security. Wages also play a central role in the city’s case for public investment. The pre-application lists production wages at about $68,000 and engineering and support roles at about $112,000, projecting an overall average wage to exceed $80,000, which the application lists as roughly 140 percent of the current Escambia County average wage. “Our young people want to stay here,” Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves said. “But the challenge that’s in front of all of us as a community—the city, the county, small businesses, everybody—is how do we continue to have those highpaying jobs where someone can be the breadwinner of their family…It’s not just about jobs, period. It’s about those quality, high-paying jobs.” Project Maeve also reflects a strategic shift in how the city is planning to redefine the role of its 50-acre deep-water port.

PENSACOLA MAGAZINE | 39

Conceptual image of Project Maeve from the City of Pensacola's pre-application to Triumph Gulf Coast

Considered small by industrial standards, the port has limited capacity for low-value or non-marine uses. City leaders have increasingly argued that its constrained footprint requires a focus on high-impact, marine-dependent industries. As stated by Reeves, the proposal is the result of several years of deliberate positioning and selective recruitment. “I feel like this is a testament to a lot of concerted effort that we’ve put in the last several years,” Reeves said. “It’s about being strategic on a small port about those highest and best uses.”

Mayor Reeves recently asked the Pensacola City Council to approve a one-year exclusivity agreement with the undisclosed shipbuilder for two ground surface areas at the Port to ensure project feasibility and financing. In early December, the city officially notified current Port tenant Martin Marietta that the city will terminate its lease in one year, as required by its agreement, to make room for Project Maeve.

The city’s Triumph pre-application does not represent a funding decision. The pre-application means the city is participating in a mandatory initial review process to provide early consideration of the proposed project’s Over the past several years, the city has worked to develop eligibility and potential impact. This is a preliminary an integrated maritime and composite manufacturing zone step before the city is invited to submit a full, detailed at the port, with Triumph previously awarding $8.5 million to application for funding. relocate American Magic’s headquarters to the city, along with $3.3 million to support University of West Florida’s If invited to submit a full application, the city would still Watercraft and Vessel Engineering (WAVE) Center. need to secure matching funds, negotiate final terms and Reeves explained the composite-manufacturing techniques used by American Magic closely align with those outlined in the Project Maeve proposal, creating opportunities for shared expertise and accelerated workforce development. The timing of Project Maeve coincides with a broader surge in Gulf Coast shipbuilding, driven by new Navy contracts and the expansion of established shipyards in Mobile and Pascagoula. That growth has prompted questions about labor availability to support the growth of another major maritime manufacturing operation. Project Maeve is one of two port-related funding requests Pensacola has submitted to Triumph this year. The second proposal seeks support for a 58-acre inland port facility on Beggs Lane, which would serve as a logistics and storage hub to free up more waterfront acreage for other uses. 40 | JANUARY 2026

obtain approval from the Pensacola City Council.

Based on the pre-application filing, construction could begin immediately if funding is approved, and would take about 30 months to complete. Once operations begin, hiring initiatives are expected to accelerate up to around 50 jobs per month. Reeves said the city is respecting the review process while remaining optimistic. “We certainly don’t want to get ahead of a Triumph decision,” he said. “But we’re excited about it.” For updates on Triumph’s decision and the undisclosed shipbuilder, visit the City of Pensacola and Triumph Gulf Coast websites or tune in to weekly press conferences from Mayor Reeves.

Colleagues say he puts others before himself constantly and that having this surprise for his family and their 8-year-old son would be an amazing way to recognize all Brian does for those around him. UWF Announces First Rhodes Scholar Finalist The University of West Florida (UWF) announced its first-ever Rhodes Scholar finalist, marking a historic milestone for the institution. The Rhodes Scholarship is the world’s oldest and most prestigious international fellowship, and this achievement coincides with the launch of the John W. Merting Family Office of National Fellowships. Established through a $500,000 gift from the Merting family, the new office provides students with the guidance, resources and support needed to pursue elite fellowship opportunities such as the Rhodes Scholarship. Ambrea Hobbs, UWF’s finalist in the Rhodes Scholarship, competed at the highest academic levels with the hopes of receiving a fully funded postgraduate study at the University of Oxford. Rhodes scholars receive funding for tuition, an annual living stipend, paid travel expenses and covered visa and health fees. Each year, only a few U.S. students are selected as nominees, and Hobbs, a history and legal studies prelaw senior, joined by Itamar Blau, a mathematics and culture, health and society premed senior, were recognized as the first UWF students to be nominated. “Ambrea was sent to me by one of our academic advisors, April Kocher, because she knew Ambrea had something special and thought that I might be able to help guide her,” John W. Merting Family Office of National Fellowships Coordinator Claire Holderman said. “Within the first few minutes of meeting her, I knew that Ambrea would be our first Rhodes nominee. Although she wasn’t fully aware of what the Rhodes Scholarship was, when she found out that she could continue her studies at Oxford University through this fully funded scholarship, she jumped at the opportunity.” After her nomination, Hobbs advanced as one of the fourteen Rhodes finalists for District 7, moving into the highly competitive interview phase of the selection process. She traveled to Birmingham, Alabama, where she interviewed alongside top candidates from institutions across the country, including the

University of Pennsylvania and University of North Carolina. While she was not ultimately selected for the scholarship, Hobbs says she is honored and grateful to have been named a Rhodes finalist. “I am honored to have had the opportunity to represent the University of West Florida on such a prestigious stage,” Hobbs said. “Further, I am endlessly grateful for and amazed by the outpouring of support I received from UWF, its faculty and our community in preparation for my application. Though I was not selected for the Rhodes Scholarship, the application process taught me quite a bit about myself. It gave me an opportunity to meaningfully reflect on my personal and academic development up to this point and set my sights toward the future.” John W. Merting Family Office of National Fellowships provides UWF students and faculty with fellowship opportunities such as Rhodes, Fulbright, Truman and Goldwater, as well as many other national and international fellowships. Students from across disciplines receive process guidance, essay feedback, interview preparation and mentorship to strengthen their applications. The program also hosts monthly workshops that aim to bring awareness to fellowship opportunities, study abroad programs offered at UWF through the Office of International Affairs, research opportunities through the Office of Undergraduate Research, as well as other campus resources that help students ultimately prepare for competitive applications. John W. Merting Family Office of National Fellowships represents the transformational resources available at UWF that empowers students to pursue global opportunities at the highest levels. Cold Weather Home Comfort Hacks As temperatures drop and cozy season sets in, keeping your home comfortable doesn’t mean undergoing a full-scale renovation. In fact, with a few smart upgrades, you can create a warm, inviting space—while improving your home’s energy efficiency, too. Before the chill sets in, consider these cool-weather comfort hacks, inspired by the experts at Simonton Windows & Doors, who have delivered high-quality replacement windows and patio doors designed to enhance the appearance, security and comfort of homes around the country for more than 75 years.

Install a Smart Thermostat One of the easiest ways to increase comfort while also reducing heating costs, installing a smart thermostat allows for automatic temperature adjustment, keeping your home warm while it’s occupied and conserving energy when you’re away. Over time, these intelligent devices learn your schedule and habits, and can be controlled remotely from a smartphone to let you turn on the heat prior to arriving back at home.

Replace Older Windows If your windows are drafty or difficult to open, it may be time to upgrade. Modern replacement windows can dramatically improve energy efficiency and insulation. High-quality options from Simonton, including DaylightMax and 6200 Sliding Windows and 5500 and 6500 Double Hung Windows, meet the highest standards of performance and reliability, having successfully earned the prestigious Good Housekeeping Seal following rigorous testing. Designed with security and weather resistance in mind, these windows are known for their durability, wide range of styles and advanced energysaving features. “This is a testament to the unwavering commitment we have to bring the best products to building professionals and homeowners,” said Kate Land, vice president of product and innovation at Cornerstone Building Brands, parent company of Simonton. “For more than 75 years, the Simonton brand has given homeowners confidence that they are investing in windows that truly deliver the highest quality and performance. This recognition solidifies our place as an industry leader customers can rely on.”

50 | JANUARY 2026

Add Insulating Window Treatments Window treatments can do more than just add a design element to your home’s interior. Options like layered drapes, thermal curtains or cellular shades can help reduce heat loss. Remember to open your curtains or blinds during the day to let in natural light and close them at night to trap warmth and keep your spaces comfortable. This can also help circulate the air in your home and reduce the chances of condensation on your windows when the temperature dips.

Seal Gaps and Keep Weatherstripping Clean Even the smallest of gaps around windows or doors can allow cold air to seep in. Check weatherstripping for wear and tear, replace as needed and use expandable foam or caulk to seal large gaps. Keeping the areas around doors and windows clean can also help maintain a tight seal and prevent winter’s chill from invading your comfortable space.

Upgrade Patio Doors Old or inefficient patio doors can let in drafts and drive up energy bills. Replacing them with energy-efficient models, such as Simonton Contemporary Sliding Patio Doors, can help maintain comfort and enhance your home’s appearance. Fully customizable with a wide range of colors, interior woodgrains and hardware finishes, the doors are designed with a narrow frame for more natural light without sacrificing energy efficiency. Plus, optional high-density SmartCore foam can further improve thermal efficiency, allowing you to enjoy winter’s beauty from the comfort of the indoors.

Add Insulation Inspect your attic, basement, garage and crawl spaces for spots where insulation may be lacking. An easy and affordable way to retain heat and improve efficiency, adding pre-cut insulation into bays between ceiling joists or blowing in loosefill insulation over the existing layer can help keep your home warmer all season long. By making a few smart upgrades and prepping your space for the cold weather ahead, you can maximize comfort and energy efficiency. To ensure your home stays comfortable this winter and beyond, visit simonton.com for more solutions.
