Building Homes. Building Industry. Building Community.

Since 1950, the Home Builders Association of West Florida has served as the voice of the building industry across Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. Representing builders, developers, remodelers, suppliers, and industry professionals, the HBA works every day to protect, promote, and strengthen the housing industry while creating opportunities for members to grow their businesses, develop future industry leaders, and give back to the communities they serve.

More Than a Membership

Membership in the HBA is an investment in your business and in the future of the building industry. Through a threein-one membership with the Home Builders Association of West Florida, the Florida Home Builders Association (FHBA), and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), members gain access to advocacy, education, networking, exclusive savings, and industry resources at the local, state, and national levels.

Networking & Visibility

The Parade of Homes is one of the many ways HBA members showcase their craftsmanship, products, and services to thousands of consumers each year. Combined with member socials, golf tournaments, educational programs, committee involvement, and special events, the HBA creates opportunities for members to build relationships, increase visibility, and grow their businesses. Whether you're a builder, subcontractor, supplier, lender, or real estate professional, the HBA provides a platform to connect with fellow industry leaders and the community.

Advocacy That Matters

The HBA serves as a unified voice for the housing industry. Through ongoing relationships with local governments, state legislators, and national policymakers, the association works to address issues that impact housing affordability, development, permitting, workforce challenges, and regulatory burdens. These efforts help ensure a strong future for the building industry and the communities we serve.

Advocacy also happens at the local level. Whether addressing industry-wide concerns or helping members navigate challenges that affect their ability to do business, the HBA's relationships and collective voice can help open doors, facilitate conversations, and move projects forward.

Education & Workforce Development

The HBA is committed to developing the next generation of industry professionals. Through workforce initiatives, partnerships with local schools and training programs, scholarships, job fairs, classroom outreach, and continuing education opportunities, members are helping introduce students to rewarding careers in the skilled trades while supporting the growth and success of today's industry professionals.

Giving Back to the Communities We Build

The HBA's impact extends far beyond the construction site.

Throughout the year, members support a variety of charitable and community service projects that make a difference throughout Northwest Florida. From collecting toys for Gulf Coast Kids House during the holiday season to volunteering at Manna Food Bank and participating in United Way's Stuff the Bus school supply drive, HBA members are committed to supporting local families and strengthening the communities they help build.

The association also celebrated the successful completion of its affordable housing initiative. Last year, through partnerships with local organizations and dedicated member support, three affordable homes were completed and sold, helping create new homeownership opportunities for local families.

Stronger Together

The success of the Home Builders Association of West Florida is driven by its members. Through committees focused on governmental affairs, workforce development, professional development, membership, and community engagement, members work together to strengthen the building industry while investing in the future of Northwest Florida.

Whether advocating for sensible policies, supporting workforce development, promoting homeownership, or serving local families in need, HBA members are helping build a stronger community and a stronger industry.

Together, we're doing more than building homes—we're building opportunities, relationships, and communities.

2026 Parade of Homes Featured Builders

Adams Homes has called Pensacola home since 1991 and continues to pair hometown roots with the strength of one of the nation’s larger privately held homebuilders, headquartered in downtown Pensacola at 100 W. Garden Street.

With a “Value, Simplified” approach, Adams Homes focuses on making homeownership more approachable for first-time buyers, military families, and move-up buyers. Adams Homes delivers thoughtfully designed homes featuring quality craftsmanship and many of the finishes and features other builders treat as upgrades - already included. A straightforward buying experience includes just $1,000 due at contract, a simplified purchase process without the need for construction loans, and a third-party-backed 10-year home warranty.

In the Pensacola market, current offerings range from attainable townhome-style options and smaller-footprint homes in communities such as Highland Ridge, Cypress Hollow, and Lexlee Estates to larger single-family homes in Allison Acres and Westpointe Place.

In Pace and Milton, Blossom Grove and Hidden Pines offer homes from the low $300s with floor plans extending to more than 3,000 square feet, while Parkland Place adds a more amenitized lifestyle with a community pool, playground, pickleball and tennis courts, trails, and a dog park.

From first homes to next homes, Adams Homes continues to serve buyers seeking quality construction, everyday value, and locations that make Northwest Florida living easy to enjoy.

Candor Construction: Thoughtfully Crafted Homes — Built on Integrity, Rooted in Community.

At Candor Construction, we believe exceptional homes begin with intentional design, quality craftsmanship, and a builder who truly listens. As a locally owned custom home builder, we are passionate about creating distinctive homes that reflect the unique vision, lifestyle, and needs of each homeowner we serve.

Building in the communities we call home is one of our greatest privileges. We value the relationships we build with our homeowners, trade partners, and neighbors, and we approach every project with the same level of care and attention to detail we would expect for our own homes. From the first design conversation to the final walk-through, our goal is to provide a building experience rooted in transparency, collaboration, and trust.

Each Candor home is thoughtfully designed with timeless character, functional spaces, and carefully selected finishes that balance beauty and everyday livability. We believe luxury is found not only in the details, but in the craftsmanship, communication, and personal attention behind every decision.

We are honored to build homes throughout our local communities and grateful for the opportunity to bring our clients’ visions to life. At Candor Construction, every home represents our commitment to excellence and the relationships that make each project meaningful.

Vickie Patterson is the founder and builder behind PropWIC Construction LLC. A disabled veteran, mother, and woman deeply rooted in family values, she believes a home should be more than a structure — it should be a sanctuary. Her vision is to create sacred spaces where families gather, children grow, memories are made, and every room reflects warmth, beauty, and purpose.

Vickie is passionate about thoughtful design that feels timeless rather than cookie-cutter. She carefully layers colors, textures, and finishes to create homes that flow beautifully from one room to the next while reflecting the unique personality of each homeowner. She understands that every family has a budget, and she believes exceptional craftsmanship, quality materials, and beautiful design should be achievable without unnecessary expense.

As a builder, Vickie leads with integrity, transparency, and respect. She believes clients deserve honest communication, fair pricing, and a building experience built on trust from the first conversation through the final walkthrough. Every decision is made with the understanding that she is helping build the backdrop for a family's life — not just another house.

Her mission is simple: to build homes that are structurally sound, beautifully designed, thoughtfully crafted, and filled with the love and life of the families who call them home.

A Community Effort

While the Dream Home showcases outstanding craftsmanship and beautiful products, its greatest feature is the incredible collaboration behind it

Every room of the home reflects the generosity of HBA members who donated products, materials, labor, and countless volunteer hours to bring the project to life From the earliest planning meetings through the final finishes, builders, suppliers, designers, trades, and service professionals worked side by side with one shared goal to create a home that not only showcases the quality of our local building industry but also serves as a fundraiser that suppor ts the Home Builders Association and its community initiatives

Amir Fooladi, owner of Parsco and Chair of the 2026 Dream Home Committee, says the project represents everything the Home Builders Association stands for

"Volunteering my time and exper tise to help build the Home Builders Association Dream Home is meaningful because it allows me to give back to HBA and suppor t our local association beyond my own business interests

The Dream Home project provides an oppor tunity to work alongside other industry professionals and help create a home that serves as a fundraising vehicle for the HBA and our community-focused initiatives. It also allows us to showcase the quality of our workmanship and professionalism while suppor ting the mission of the Home Builders Association It fosters relationships within the building community, encourages collaboration among contractors and suppliers, and helps promote excellence in residential construction

Most impor tantly, par ticipating in the Dream Home is an investment in our industry and in the relationships that make both stronger " Amir Fooladi, Parsco, Dream Home Committee Chair

Their generosity never ceases to amaze me I am deeply grateful for the experience, the relationships built, and the extensive knowledge of the building process I have gained along the way. ” - Suzanne Spann Legacy Insurance and Committee Member

The Home Builders Association extends its sincere appreciation to every builder, trade contractor, supplier, manufacturer, designer, volunteer, sponsor, and donor who contributed to this year ' s Dream Home Whether through donated materials, labor, exper tise, or financial suppor t, every contribution played an impor tant role in bringing this remarkable project to life Together, these collective effor ts not only created an exceptional home but also help strengthen the HBA's mission to suppor t the building industry, workforce development, scholarships, advocacy, and community initiatives throughout Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties

Jennifer Mancini, Executive Officer of the Home Builders Association of West Florida, believes the finished home represents far more than quality construction

2026 PARADE OF HOMES PRESENTING SPONSORS

Most homeowners assume building "to code" is enough-until the next major storm proves otherwise. That's where Disaster Smart comes in. We help contractors and homeowners go beyond minimum standards by achieving FORTIFIED™ certification, a nationally recognized program designed to make homes more resistant to hurricanes, high winds, and severe weather.

For builders, this is more than compliance-it's a competitive advantage. Disaster Smart simplifies the entire process, from planning and documentation to inspections and final certification. We work directly with your team to meet IBHS standards and deliver homes that are stronger, safer, and more marketable. Offering FORTIFIED homes positions you as a builder focused on quality and long-term performance.

For homeowners, the benefits are immediate. FORTIFIED homes are built to reduce damage and costly repairs-and often qualify for significant insurance discounts. Many homeowners save thousands over time while gaining peace of mind knowing their home is built to withstand real-world storm conditions.

Disaster Smart makes it simple. Whether re-roofing or building new, we provide the expertise to turn better construction into real financial and safety benefits.

Don't just meet code. Build smarter, safer, and stronger with Disaster Smart and FORTIFIED™.

We just bought a home in Gulf Breeze and Simone was awesome! Throughout the entire process Simone and her team worked so hard to ensure everything went smoothly, and addressed all of our challenges with professionalism and integrity. Even after closing she has continued to be a source for information and has helped out with a few items that have popped up. I can't recommend her enough!

Superior representation. Every step of the way. Total guidance. From search to keys and beyond. Certified Residential Specialist Designation. The highest in the industry. Expertise you can trust. Nuances matter.

Experience Carries Weight. Not all agents are the same. Don't buy without a proven advisor in your corner. Message me for a one-on-one, no-pressure consultation.

If you need an agent, 100% go with Simone!!! She went above and beyond every step of the way while helping us buy our first ever home. Could not recommend her enough!

Pensacola Celebrates Gálvez Days 2026

Text and photos by Julie B. Connerley

For several years, Pensacola has celebrated Gálvez Days on May 8 to remember and honor the efforts of Bernardo de Gálvez who successfully defeated the British in the Siege of Pensacola in 1781. But what many people don’t know is that Gálvez Days’ origins actually began in 1981.

That year, the Spanish Navy’s training ship, the Juan Sebástian de Elcano arrived in Pensacola for only the second time. Captain Cristóbal Colón (a direct descendent of Christopher Columbus), commanded the Elcano. The ship’s first visit, in 1959, commemorated the 400th anniversary of Don Tristan de Luna’s expedition to the New World.

Dame Maria Davis, honorary vice consul to Spain, now retired, welcomed and hosted members of the Spanish Navy to our city, “in an effort to make them feel welcome in this strange land,” said her son, Lipo Davis, current honorary vice consul to Spain.

This was the impetus for what later became known as Gálvez Days, which celebrates Pensacola’s connection with Spain.

Sister Cities International (SCI) was established by President Eisenhower in1956, and serves as a people-to-people diplomacy program. In 2013, the Pensacola Chapter of SCI embraced Macharaviaya, Spain, the birthplace of Gálvez, as a sister city.

Other notable milestones include the 2014 law passed by the United States Senate and House of Representatives naming Bernardo de Gálvez as an honorary US citizen. Gálvez joined just seven other individuals recognized with that distinction. The years-long efforts to accomplish that were spearheaded by local philanthropist Nancy Fetterman.

About the same time, a local chapter of Granaderos y Damas de Gálvez was formed. This non-profit historical organization was initially created in 1975 in San Antonio, Texas to educate the public about Spain’s often overlooked role in the American Revolution. They sponsor and support historic, cultural and patriotic events. Many Pensacolians, along with other chapter members from Texas and Louisiana have visited Macharaviaya, Spain, which also boasts a Granaderos y Damas De Gálvez chapter.

Notably, Macharaviaya is the only city outside of the United States that officially celebrates our Independence Day! A parade with locals donning British and Spanish period costumes, reenact the Siege of Pensacola, along with special entertainment. Almost the entire community of 1,000 participates in some way. Seventeen Spaniards traveled from Macharaviaya to participate in Pensacola’s Gálvez Days.

A more recent addition to Gálvez Days was the 2018 installation of a full-sized bronze statue of Gálvez atop a horse located at Palafox and Wright streets. That project was envisioned and completed through the efforts of the Pensacola Heritage Foundation.

Over the past several years, Gálvez Days events have expanded to include school essay contests and a wreath-laying ceremony in Pensacola Bay where Gálvez entered Pensacola Pass “Yo Solo” (I Alone) to convince his troops they would be successful against the British. About 130 guests boarded Pensacola’s two City Bay Ferry Boats for that observance on May 7. A short service at St. Michael’s Basilica was also well attended.

A special ceremony at the Gálvez monument always delights the crowds. A period attired color guard composed of several members of the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution march from Fort George down Palafox Street to the Gálvez statue. Between 300-400 locals and guests enjoyed speeches by local and international dignitaries on May 8. Episcopal Day School’s third grade students entertained the crowd with Spanish inspired dancing. The youngsters practiced for a month, thanks to their teacher, Jordan Selogy and their Spanish teacher, Iris Daughtry. Another separate ceremony was also planned at Veterans Park, but weather forced it indoors at The Wright Place, part of the First United Methodist Church of Pensacola.

For our nation’s 250th anniversary, the 2026 National Meeting of the Granaderos y Damas was held at The Wright Place, coinciding with Gálvez Days. More than 80 chapter members attended, with six Granaderos chapters presenting annual reports. Special guest speakers included Kay Yarborough, vice president of the National DAR and Chris Washler, Florida State SAR president. Alphonso Arrioles recounted the history of how Macharaviaya became the largest celebration of July 4 in Europe. David Dodson, a local historian of Don Tristan DeLuna, spoke about the first attempt to settle Pensacola in 1559. Hector Diaz detailed the efforts of the Spanish military during the American Revolution.

Additional sponsors of Gálvez Days included the University of West Florida’s Historic Trust, along with the City of Pensacola. Both coordinated lunches for special visitors and locals and provided overall logistics support.

Our yearly Galvez Days celebration is a testament to Pensacola’s hospitality and rich history with Spain.

The Galvez Gala

Trevor S. Odom, Governor, Pensacola Chapter, Granaderos y Damas

On May 9, 2026, Pensacola stepped back in time to the era of the American Revolution for the inaugural Galvez Gala. As the first-ever gala in Pensacola to require period dress or black-tie attire, the evening offered guests an unforgettable glimpse into the elegance, culture and celebration of the Revolutionary era.

Upon arrival, guests passed through a formal receiving line guarded by Spanish soldiers before entering an evening filled with history and sophistication. Attendees enjoyed a feast inspired by authentic Revolutionary-era recipes and danced late into the night to music spanning from the 1720s and beyond.

Entertainment for the evening was provided by the renowned band 7lb of Bacon, accompanied by talented soloists performing beloved songs from the Revolutionary period, including “Yankee Doodle” and “The Count of Hessen.” Guests also enjoyed exclusive photo opportunities with Don and Dama Galvez, Nancy Fetterman and Mayor Antonio Campos of Macharaviaya, who were honored for their outstanding contributions to preserving and promoting Pensacola’s connection to Galvez and American history.

The celebration also featured a silent auction showcasing remarkable items ranging from Spanish to George Washington's replica pistol.

Where Animation History Comes to Life

For generations, animated characters have made us laugh, cry and quote our favorite one-liners long after the credits roll. Whether it was Bugs Bunny outsmarting Elmer Fudd, Pinocchio dreaming of becoming a real boy or Betty Boop’s unmistakable charm, these iconic characters share one origin story — they all began as simple sketches.

Now, visitors can step behind the scenes at the Pensacola Museum of Art’s Enchanted Drawings: The Magic of Animation Featuring more than 50 original works from the private collection of Pensacola residents Gerald and Vicki Adcox, the exhibit offers a rare glimpse into the artistry and craftsmanship that brought some of the world’s most recognizable animated films and characters to life.

Original concept sketches, hand-painted production cels and lithographs reveal the painstaking process that transformed simple pencil lines into timeless screen icons. Alongside historic animation tools, classic cartoons and interactive displays, the exhibit traces the evolution of the art form from its early experiments with moving images to the golden age of handdrawn animation.

More than a showcase of nostalgic characters, Enchanted Drawings tells the story of animation itself and the artists whose creativity and innovation brought these timeless characters to life.

At the heart of the exhibit is a personal story that began more than 40 years ago with an unexpected stop at a shopping mall. Gerald Adcox still remembers the moment. In 1985, while visiting Chicago with his wife, Vicki, the couple came across a small display of animation art. There was no auction or gallery opening, just a chance encounter that would spark a lifelong passion for collecting.

“My wife and I were strolling through a shopping mall in Chicago when we saw them,” Adcox said. “Nobody was selling animation art, so it was the first time we had ever seen anything like it. We bought a couple little pieces, and we just got addicted from that point forward.”

One of those first purchases was a Bugs Bunny animation cel. That single piece became the foundation for a collection that has grown into roughly 70 original drawings, production cels and lithographs spanning some of animation’s most celebrated studios and artists.

For more than four decades, the collection lived quietly inside the Adcoxes’ home, shared mostly with friends and family. Now, for the first time, visitors can see these cherished works for themselves.

“I’ve always wanted to show people the collection,” Adcox said. “But you can’t run people through your house, so this is a way to do that.”

The opportunity for a public exhibit came after Pensacola Museum of Art Director Nicholas Croghan visited Adcox several years ago. While their initial conversations centered on Gerald’s broader interests in art and vintage guitars, the discussion soon turned to animation and the remarkable collection he and Vicki had quietly built over the years.

“I had the opportunity to meet Gerald and visit his office,” Croghan said. “He has an amazing collection of modern art, vintage guitars and illustrations from renowned animators and artists. As we talked, we developed the idea for an exhibit focused on storytelling through animation.”

Rather than simply hanging artwork on gallery walls, Croghan wanted the exhibit to reveal the story behind the medium by showing visitors how animation evolved, how the process works and how much craftsmanship is hidden within every frame.

“Our goal was to show original illustrations alongside early methods of creating movement, filmmaking techniques and classic animated cartoons,” Croghan explained. “The exhibit unfolds chronologically and ends with a drawing station where visitors can actually try it themselves.”

That chronological journey begins with The Enchanted Drawing (1900), one of the earliest films to incorporate animated elements. From there, the exhibit traces the rise of animation studios, the emergence of feature-length animated films and the arrival of television cartoons.

Along the way, visitors see how innovations like handpainted cels, rotoscoping, the multiplane camera and advances in color helped shape the industry and pave the way for today’s digital animation.

The history is brought to life through original sketches, production cels and lithographs from influential artists, alongside historic devices on loan from the Pensacola History Museum — including a magic lantern and a zoetrope that demonstrate some of the earliest attempts to create motion. Screenings of landmark shorts such as Prest-O Change-O and Dizzy Dishes further connect the artwork on display to the finished films audiences know and recognize.

Those films also mark key milestones in animation history. Prest-O Change-O (1939), directed by Chuck Jones, features an early appearance of the character who would eventually become Bugs Bunny, while Dizzy Dishes (1930) introduced Betty Boop to audiences.

Selecting what to include was no easy task. Croghan said the Adcox collection is extensive, and the goal was to choose works that best illustrate the artistic evolution of animation.

“We wanted to create a survey of animation history,” Croghan explained. “Each piece serves as a step in that journey. We focused on strong examples of original drawings and handpainted cels that show process, character development and the golden era of American animation.”

What makes the collection especially distinctive is not just the artwork, but the relationships behind it. Adcox’s personal friendship with legendary animator Chuck Jones adds rare

“Each piece serves as a step in that journey. We focused on strong examples of original drawings and hand-painted cels that show process, character development and the golden era of American animation.”

historical context. Jones, who helped create characters like Bugs Bunny, the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote, also became part of Adcox’s collecting journey.

“Gerald had a personal relationship with Chuck Jones,” Croghan said. “That connection helped spark his passion for collecting, and his stories add provenance and depth to the work.”

Adcox recalls visiting Jones at his home in Newport Beach and later interviewing him during his time working in California.

“I was able to go to his home and interview him,” Adcox said. “A couple pieces came directly from him.”

He also visited the studio of Jones’ daughter, Linda, where animation artwork was being prepared for collectors.

Those experiences helped shape a collection that now includes rare and significant pieces. Among them is a hand-painted cel featuring Pinocchio and the Blue Fairy, along with a complete set of Chuck Jones’ Master Works lithographs that reimagine iconic Looney Tunes characters in the styles of renowned artists such as Van Gogh, Dalí, Chagall, Toulouse-Lautrec and Munch.

“The complete set of Master Works — nobody else has a full set,” Adcox said. “It’s 11 pieces, and it’s complete.”

Croghan describes the exhibit as a playful intersection of fine art history and animation, blending high art references with Looney Tunes humor. While longtime animation fans will recognize many of the characters, the exhibit is designed for all audiences. Interactive elements encourage visitors to think like animators and explore the creative process themselves.

That approach continues at the exhibit’s final stop: a drawing station where visitors can learn to sketch familiar characters using step-by-step instructions. It has quickly become one of the most popular parts of the show.

“Nick did such a great job putting together the exhibit,” Adcox said. “People are learning how to draw characters like the Road Runner and Pepe Le Pew. There’s always someone at that table when I stop in for a visit.”

For Croghan, that interaction speaks to the heart of what the exhibit is meant to do.

“We want visitors to leave having discovered something new,” he said. “To try drawing, explore the process and connect with animation in a different way.”

In the end, every sketch, cel and painting serves as a reminder that what audiences see on screen begins with thousands of drawings, created one frame at a time.

For Adcox, sharing that world with the public has been deeply rewarding after decades of collecting.

“It’s just a happy exhibit,” he said. “It brings people back to their childhood. Everything in it makes you smile.”

Whether you’re an animation fan or someone who still recognizes “What’s up, Doc?,” Enchanted Drawings offers a chance to revisit beloved characters while discovering the artistry, craftsmanship and history that brought them to life.

Visitors are invited to step behind the scenes and discover how every character, from Bugs Bunny and Betty Boop to Pinocchio and the Road Runner, began with nothing more than a pencil, a blank page and an idea.

Enchanted Drawings: The Magic of Animation is on display through September 6 at the Pensacola Museum of Art, located at 407 S. Jefferson St. in downtown Pensacola.

Birdon Project Moves Closer to Transforming Port of Pensacola

A major economic development project at the Port of Pensacola moved one step closer to reality in late June after the Triumph Gulf Coast Board of Directors approved a key component of a proposed $76 million grant for Birdon America Inc.’s planned advanced ship manufacturing facility.

The approval of the grant term sheet marks the second of three required steps toward finalizing the funding agreement, which would support Birdon’s plans to establish its Southeastern headquarters and a Tier 2 advanced ship manufacturing facility in Pensacola.

The term sheet outlines the major components of the future grant agreement and brings the project closer to final approval.

“I am grateful to the team at the City who worked tirelessly to get us to this point,” Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves said. “Today we are one step closer to bringing this transformational project to life at our Port. We’re focused on building Pensacola’s future, and Triumph’s investment helps us do just that.”

The proposed $275 million project is expected to create 2,000 jobs, including 1,437 positions with an average annual salary of $68,000 and 563 positions with an average annual salary of $112,000. If completed, Birdon would become the third-largest employer within Pensacola city limits and the project would represent the largest job-creation initiative in the city’s history.

“The Port of Pensacola has always been a tremendous asset for our community, and this project represents the next chapter in its history,” Reeves said. “This is about more than creating jobs. It’s about creating opportunities, strengthening our workforce and positioning Pensacola for long-term economic growth.”

The next milestone is approval of the final grant agreement, which Reeves said the city hopes to bring before the Triumph Board later this summer. Once approved, the city and Birdon will move forward with lease negotiations, which will also require approval from the Pensacola City Council.

The overall project includes construction of a 400,000-square-foot shipbuilding facility at the Port of Pensacola that would support advanced manufacturing,

strengthen the local economy and contribute to U.S. defense efforts through the production of critical modules for ships and submarines.

Funding for the project is expected to come from several sources, including $76 million from Triumph Gulf Coast, $14 million from the Florida Job Growth Grant Fund, $33 million from the U.S. Department of Commerce and $152 million from Birdon.

Triumph Gulf Coast is the nonprofit corporation created to manage funds recovered for economic damages related to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The Birdon grant would be among the largest grants approved by the organization.

According to the city’s application with Triumph, the new facility will be capable of producing large modules for U.S. Navy ships and submarines, as well as complete surface vessels up to 400 feet in length.

The Triumph funding would support the construction of two new shipbuilding facilities at the port through a $105 million construction program. Phase 1 includes a panel line and module-fabrication warehouse, while Phase 2 includes an assembly bay. Together, the facilities will house advanced ship manufacturing operations and office space.

The City of Pensacola will retain ownership of the facilities as public infrastructure and enter into a long-term ground lease with Birdon America Inc. for their use.

Founded in 1977, Birdon is a family-owned maritime engineering and shipbuilding company with operations throughout the United States, Australia, Europe and Asia. The company expanded into the U.S. market in 2009 as Birdon America, establishing its headquarters in Denver, Colorado.

Today, Birdon America operates four business divisions: Marine Ship Building and Repair; Disposals; Engineering; and Marine Propulsion. The company has more than 15 years of experience delivering major defense contracts for the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps and allied defense forces worldwide.

The Pensacola facility would allow Birdon to produce complex Navy ship modules for Tier 1 shipyards, submarine modules and complete surface vessels up to 400 feet, supporting federal efforts to expand the nation’s maritime industrial base and strengthen U.S. manufacturing capabilities.

“This is exactly the type of investment that can have a generational impact,” Reeves said. “We’re not just bringing a company here — we’re building a foundation for a stronger maritime economy, creating a pipeline for future workers and opening doors for businesses that want to grow alongside this project.”

City of Pensacola team has secured the second needed approval from Triumph Gulf Coast for the Birdon project at the Port of Pensacola.
“Today we are one step closer to bringing this transformational project to life at our Port. We’re focused on building Pensacola’s future, and Triumph’s investment helps us do just that.”

To receive and maintain Triumph funding, the City of Pensacola and Birdon must meet several requirements outlined in the grant agreement. The City must secure a lease of at least 25 years that requires Birdon to meet the performance requirements established by Triumph. Birdon will have five years after the facility’s completion, or until December 31, 2035, whichever comes first, to directly create 2,000 net new jobs within the eight counties of Northwest Florida. After reaching that goal, the company must maintain those jobs for at least seven of the following 10 years.

Beyond job creation, the project is intended to help establish a broader maritime and defense industry cluster in Northwest Florida by attracting suppliers and expanding partnerships with the University of West Florida’s WAVE Center, Pensacola State College and the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition. The goal is to create a long-term talent pipeline and applied research ecosystem to support the region’s growing maritime economy.

Reeves said the final agreement between the city and Birdon for the 400,000-square-foot shipbuilding facility could be finalized as soon as August.

“This is a historic opportunity for Pensacola,” Reeves said. “We’re excited about what this means for our residents, our businesses and the future of our city.”

Local Builders and Habitat for Humanity

Bring Construction Careers to Life for Pensacola Children

Landis Construction and Pensacola Habitat for Humanity are proud to support Theo's Construction House, an interactive constructionthemed play experience within the Pensacola Children's Museum's

Our Town: A Space for All exhibit.

The larger Our Town exhibit was developed by the University of West Florida Historic Trust and funded through a $100,670 grant from Impact 100 Pensacola Bay Area. Designed to celebrate Pensacola's history through imaginative play, the exhibit features child-sized versions of local landmarks and historic sites that encourage exploration, creativity and learning.

Among those experiences is Theo's Construction House, a hands-on space where children can step inside a house under construction, interact with building tools and discover the fundamentals of construction through tactile play.

The attraction is named in honor of Rev. Theophalis May (1927–2006), a renowned Pensacola architect, builder, minister and founder of May's Construction Company. Throughout his career, May became known for preserving historic structures across Pensacola while also helping create affordable housing opportunities and investing in underserved neighborhoods. His legacy of craftsmanship, service and community building continues to influence Pensacola today.

For Landis Construction, supporting Theo's Construction House aligned closely with the company's commitment to education and community engagement.

"Children's education and future opportunities are incredibly important to us at Landis," Landis Construction’s Pensacola lead Casey Capps said. "We intentionally support programs that help children learn, grow and discover new possibilities. Theo's Construction House gives kids an opportunity to explore construction through hands-on play while introducing them to skills like creativity, teamwork and problem-solving. If that experience sparks an interest in building or creating something of their own, that's incredibly rewarding."

The partnership also reflects the shared values of Landis Construction and Pensacola Habitat for Humanity, both organizations dedicated to strengthening communities through building, service and opportunity.

By supporting Theo's Construction House, the organizations hope to help children better understand how homes, neighborhoods and communities are created while exposing them to potential career pathways within the construction industry and skilled trades.

"Construction is ultimately about building communities and creating spaces where people can thrive," Capps said. "We're honored to support an exhibit that celebrates an important Pensacola builder while encouraging children to use their imagination, explore new ideas and see the possibilities that exist for their future."

Operated by the UWF Historic Trust, the Pensacola Children's Museum welcomes families from across the region to experience Northwest Florida's history through interactive exhibits and educational programming. Theo's Construction House serves as a tribute to one of Pensacola's most influential builders while helping inspire the next generation of creators, craftsmen and community leaders.

Pensacola International Airport Awarded $425,000 BUILD Grant for Terminal Roadway Planning Study

Pensacola International Airport has been awarded a $425,000 Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) Grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to fund a comprehensive planning study focused on the reconfiguration and expansion of the airport’s existing curbfront and roadway system. Pensacola International Airport has experienced unprecedented growth over the last decade, with passenger activity increasing by more than 100 percent. As the airport continues to modernize and expand, the roadway network serving the terminal has faced increasing pressure, particularly during peak travel periods.

The BUILD-funded planning study will help identify long-term solutions to improve safety, traffic flow and operational efficiency throughout the airport’s roadway and curbfront system while preparing the airport for future growth. The study will include preliminary 30 percent design work focused on improvements to terminal access roads, passenger pick-up and drop-off areas, parking access, rental car circulation, outbound traffic flow and broader multimodal connectivity.

“As a member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I’m proud to help secure $425,000 for improvements to Airport Boulevard,” Congressman Jimmy Patronis said. “I want to thank Secretary Duffy and President Trump for recognizing the tremendous growth we’re seeing across the Panhandle and for helping move this project forward. This investment will improve the travel experience today while ensuring Pensacola International Airport is ready to meet the demands of Northwest Florida’s tomorrow.”

City leaders say the study will play an important role in supporting both the airport’s continued growth and the region’s long-term transportation needs.

“Our airport’s growth is a success story for our city and the region, and our terminal roadway infrastructure needs to keep up so that we can keep providing the service our residents and visitors deserve,” Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves said. “We are so grateful to receive this BUILD Grant to help support the study needed to give us a blueprint to keep our airport humming.”

Airport officials say the study will help establish the framework for future roadway and curbfront improvements tied to the airport’s ongoing Terminal Expansion and Modernization Program.

“This grant is an important investment in the future of Pensacola International Airport and the Northwest Florida region,” Executive Director of Pensacola International Airport Matt Coughlin said. “As passenger traffic continues to grow and our Terminal Expansion and Modernization Program moves forward, it is critical that we proactively plan for a safer, more efficient and more intuitive roadway system that improves the experience for travelers and strengthens regional mobility.”

The City of Pensacola and Pensacola International Airport also extend sincere appreciation to Senator Ashley Moody for her support of the project and for providing a letter of support during the BUILD grant application process.

The planning study will serve as a foundational step in supporting the airport’s continued growth and long-term transportation needs while helping ensure Pensacola International Airport remains a safe, efficient and welcoming gateway to Northwest Florida for years to come.

The program is designed to be practical, accessible and sustainable, providing survivors with tools they can incorporate into everyday life.

Participants in Move & Nourish Florida will receive personalized support from healthcare professionals, including guidance on healthy eating, physical activity and stress-management strategies. The program combines the best available scientific evidence with a hands-on approach designed to fit into real life and meet survivors where they are. This interdisciplinary research brings together experts from the Usha Kundu, MD College of Health’s departments of Public Health, Movement Sciences, Social Work, Nursing and Medical Lab Sciences; the Hal Marcus College of Science and Engineering’s Computational Statistics and Data Analytics Lab; and community partners including Health and Hope Clinic, Community Health NorthWest Florida and Florida Department of Health.

"This funding allows us to translate research into action by working directly with cancer survivors and the communities that support them," Dr. Chhabria Unrue said. "Our goal is to develop evidencebased approaches that improve health outcomes and can ultimately be implemented across Florida."

The project builds upon the work of the IMPACT Lab founded and directed by Dr. Chhabria Unrue. Through the IMPACT Lab, Dr. Chhabria Unrue leads interdisciplinary research focused on cancer survivorship, mental health, chronic disease prevention, women's health and population health analytics.

The lab's mission is to translate scientific discoveries into practical solutions that improve health outcomes and quality of life among vulnerable populations. In addition to generating evidence that can help healthcare organizations better support long-term cancer survivorship care, the project will also provide valuable research and training opportunities for UWF students.

The Florida Cancer Innovation Fund was created by the Florida Legislature in 2024 within the Casey DeSantis Cancer Research Program, with oversight by the Florida Cancer Connect Collaborative, to support innovative cancer research and treatment models, including emerging trends that may serve as catalysts for further research and treatment.

University of West Florida Unveils Refreshed Brand Identity

The University of West Florida (UWF) has unveiled a refreshed brand identity, including a new primary logo and updated visual system, designed to better reflect the University’s growth and forward momentum.

The brand refresh comes at a transformative time for UWF as it reaches record enrollment, expands research with an R2 designation, strengthens its regional impact and begins the transition into NCAA Division I athletics. The updated identity provides a more unified and contemporary representation of UWF while honoring the traditions and heritage that have shaped the institution.

“As our University continues to grow and reach new milestones, it is important that our identity reflects who we are today while honoring the legacy that brought us here,” UWF President Manny Diaz Jr. said. “This refreshed brand positions us to more clearly tell the UWF story and communicate the impact we have on our students, our region and beyond.”

The brand refresh was informed by a comprehensive brand audit conducted by The Moore Agency, which included stakeholder interviews, focus groups and an evaluation of UWF's visual identity. The research provided insight into how the University is perceived by prospective and current students, alumni, partners and the broader community, and it identified opportunities to strengthen consistency and recognition across audiences.

The new primary logo builds upon the University’s existing athletic lettermark and features a stylized UWF monogram in the institution's updated navy and green color palette. The design creates stronger alignment between academic and athletic branding while providing a distinctive and recognizable identity for UWF.

As part of the refresh, UWF's primary blue and green colors have been updated to Argo Navy and Argo Green. The revised color palette creates a more consistent and cohesive visual identity across the University, while improving accessibility and flexibility across digital, print and environmental applications. The updated primary colors also establish a stronger and more distinctive presence that reflects the University’s growing reputation and institutional prestige.

For nearly 60 years, the Nautilus Shell has served as a defining symbol of UWF, representing progress and the University's connection to place. While the shell is no longer featured in the primary institutional logo, it remains an important part of UWF's identity and heritage and will continue to be represented through the academic seal and other institutional brand elements.

“This consolidation of our visual brand comes at a pivotal time as we are on the cusp of so many highly visible endeavors,” UWF Creative Director Jennifer Peck said. “All of our heritage brand icons remain part of our story, but they have evolved and reorganized to help propel us into our next chapter.”

Around the Region

In addition to the visual identity update, UWF has refined its brand messaging framework to ensure greater consistency across communications, marketing and recruitment efforts. The updated brand strategy emphasizes student success, regional impact, innovation and opportunity, and it frames UWF as a place that is bold, authentic, accessible, determined and always advancing.

“All of these updates reflect an important step forward for UWF,” Diaz said. “While our visual identity is evolving, our mission and our commitment to our students, faculty, staff and community remain unchanged.”
