inkedIn® has spotlighted Pensacola as one of its inaugural ‘Cities on the Rise’ — a curated list highlighting the 25 mid-sized U.S. metropolitan areas experiencing exceptional growth in hiring, talent migration, and job postings.

What’s Driving the Momentum?

LinkedIn’s ranking examines year-over-year percentage increases across three key metrics: hiring activity (defined by the number of people adding new positions to their profiles), job-posting volume, and the net influx of professionals relocating to the area.

Pensacola stood out in all categories, showcasing strength in several pivotal industries, including healthcare, professional services, and government administration — sectors that form the backbone of the city’s labor market.

Why Pensacola?

The region’s focus on supporting local businesses, helping startup companies, and creating a vibrant downtown has helped keep talent at home, attract new talent, and build a national reputation as a great place to live, work, and play.

Top employers: Navy Federal Credit Union, the U.S. Navy, and the University of West Florida are among the city’s largest employers by volume.

What’s Next?

Pensacola’s growth as a thriving Gulf Coast economic hub:

Sustained Growth: Continue supporting local businesses, startups, and entrepre neurs to foster local growth and economic resilience.

Workforce Development:

Prioritize building a skilled, reliable work force to meet the demands of expanding industries.

5 Questions with Creatives

Cameron

owner of Saturday Sun

Cameron Dykzeul is a relief print artist and the owner of Saturday Sun, under which he sells his hand-printed shirts, prints and more. Relief printing involves carving an image into a block, inking the raised surface and transferring the image to paper or fabric. Inspired by nature, his prints typically depict various plants and animals.

Dykzeul has quickly become a regular vendor at art markets and events throughout Pensacola. You can often find him set up at Palafox Market South, Gallery Night and other seasonal markets throughout the year. You can also find his work at Jitterbug Beverage Co., the Apple Market and at Nolita’s Parlor & Eatery.

To check out more of Dykzeul’s work, request a commission and view his upcoming market schedule, visit @saturday.sun.art on Instagram. To shop available pieces, visit saturdaysunart.com.

Can you tell me a bit about yourself and your professional background?

I grew up in California and moved to attend college at Oregon State University. I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business entrepreneurship and a minor in environmental science. It has been a dream of mine to start my own business and operate it as sustainably as possible. After graduating, I worked at prAna and Columbia Sportswear in consumer insights and global merchandising. I moved to Pensacola about two years ago to join my boyfriend, who is completing his master’s degree at UWF. After moving, I continued working remotely for Columbia while working on my art on the side. I established Saturday Sun in February 2024, and set up a booth at my first art market in June 2024. In October, I decided to take the leap and go full-time with my art, and it has been the best decision I’ve ever made.

How did you become interested in creating?

I come from a creative family and have always been surrounded by art and encouraged to explore creatively. My parents are both graphic designers. I worked with them to create my logo and branding for Saturday Sun. I’ve always enjoyed creating art to some degree, but printmaking has been the first medium to truly stick with me. When I picked up a starter kit of block printing tools a little less than two years ago as a hobby, I had no idea what it would lead to.

What inspires or influences your work?

Much of my inspiration comes from the environment. I’ve always had a massive love for nature and our national and state parks. I recently started a series of national

parks prints, donating a portion of the proceeds to the National Parks Foundation. It is important for my art to be a clear reflection of my point of view and values. My past travel experiences also influence my art. It’s a fun way for me to revisit memories as I create new work. One of my more recent collections of carvings consists of four Swedish folk art-inspired animal prints, which took me back to the semester I spent in Sweden.

What types of pieces do you create?

Hand-printed t-shirts are my most popular creation. These pieces are my favorite to make because they are truly one-of-a-kind. Other than clothing, I also print on paper. I like to rotate other items in my product assortment, such as bookmarks, stickers, mini prints, fabric patches and bandannas. It keeps it interesting when I change up my booth regularly.

Can you take me through your creative process and describe what goes into creating one of your pieces?

I carve my relief prints using linoleum or rubber blocks. Recently, I have been embellishing my prints using watercolors and stamping with color gradients—including a special rainbow edition for Pride. That being said, I will always focus a lot of my work around the intense contrast you can only get from black ink and well-placed negative space.

I keep a running list of project ideas. When starting a new project, I usually pick the subject matter that speaks to me the most at that moment. I then start a rough sketch and transfer my drawing onto the carving block. I always sharpen my carving gouges before starting to ensure my lines come out crisp. Then, I am ready to start carving. The carving stage is my favorite part of the whole process because it’s where my vision for the piece takes shape.

Once it looks like I’ve carved away everything I intended to, it’s time for a test pressing. I give the block a thin coating of ink and lay the paper on top. I then burnish it, either by hand using a baren or with my tabletop press. Once evenly pressed, the print is pulled off the block, revealing the result of many hours of work. At this point, either the carving is finished and ready to use, or I will make a few final tweaks based on the test print. There are quicker methods of creating prints, but the slow, intentional nature of the process is what I love so much about it.

Blending Culture & Culinary Creativity

Bistrology Debuts New Location in Downtown Pensacola

Bistrology has officially opened its doors in downtown Pensacola, bringing towering pancake stacks, expertly crafted lattes, floral- garnished drinks and a vibrant brunch experience for local foodies.

Located in the former Secret Sagittarius Bierwerks & Scratch Kitchen (formerly Big Top Brewing Company), Bistrology is a breakfast and brunch spot serving up specialty coffee, craft cocktails and bold American comfort food with Spanish, Columbian and European influences.

Co-owned by Jonathan Gallen and Henry Guerrero, Bistrology’s first location opened in July 2023 in Miramar Beach and quickly became a popular brunch destination amongst locals and tourists alike. The restaurant’s modern aesthetic, unique flavors and Instagrammable dishes generated quite a buzz on social media.

After seeing the success of the flagship restaurant, Bistrology owners Jonathan Gallen and Henry Guerrero began looking to expand the business along the Gulf Coast. The downtown location has been in the works since late 2023, and its doors finally opened to the public on August 22.

Located at 21 W. Romana St., the downtown Bistrology serves as the restaurant’s second location. The building has been remodeled and transformed into a luxurious modern space, featuring earth-tones, natural textures, exposed brick and a gorgeous marble bar top.

Bistrology’s food and beverage menu matches the space’s sophisticated vibe, featuring visually stunning dishes, coffees and cocktails. From elevated breakfast favorites like stuffed croissants and eggs benedict to classic lunch bites like sandwiches and burgers, Bistrology is serving up dishes that are as delicious as they are beautiful.

When creating the menu, Gallen and Guerrero were inspired by the flavors and dishes of their Spanish and Colombian cultures. The Peruvian Ceviche—avocado with shrimp, onions and peppers served with fried plantains—and the Lomo Saltado—a flavorful beef and veggie stirfry—are two popular Spanish-inspired dishes.

The owners’ Spanish and Columbian influences are also evident in their coffee beverages. Bistrology sources its coffee beans from farms in Colombia, Brazil, Guatemala and Honduras.

Bistrology baristas will be pouring up drinks that are not just your average cup of joe. The coffee menu features drinks made with a variety of brewing methods, including Japanese siphon, French press and espresso.

The restaurant also offers a variety of signature lattes, including the popular Nutella Signature, which includes espresso and milk, with a garnish of Nutella, Oreo cookies and whipped cream. The coffee

menu also features less sweet options, including nitro cold brew, matcha lattes and all the classic espresso-based drinks.

Apart from coffee, Bistrology also serves up homemade sodas, smoothies, fresh juices and more. Several Latin-American sodas will also be available, including Mexican Coca-Cola and Fanta, Pony Malta, Colombiana and more.

For those who want to sip on something stronger, Bistrology offers a full bar with signature brunch cocktails, including mimosas. The cocktails are crafted with house infusions and handmade syrups, giving each cocktail a unique flavor. Like every menu item at Bistrology, the cocktails are beautifully garnished, making for a picture-perfect presentation.

With its lively atmosphere, culinary creativity, and trendy aesthetic, Bistrology is on track to become a favorite brunch spot in downtown Pensacola. Bistrology is open Monday through Friday from 7 am to 3 pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 7 am to 8 pm.

Pick of the Patch

First City Art Center’s 19th Annual Pumpkin Patch

As the fall breeze begins to roll in, it’s time to bring out the autumnal decor—from leaf garlands and burlap accents to cornucopias and, of course, pumpkins!

Step up your fall decorating game by adding some local flair with a handcrafted glass or ceramic pumpkin. First City Art Center’s (FCAC) annual Pumpkin Patch provides the perfect opportunity to support local artists while adding a one-of-a-kind handmade piece to your fall decor collection.

On October 4, FCAC will host its 19th Annual Pumpkin Patch, with more than 5,000 glass and ceramic pumpkins for sale. Handcrafted by local artists who work in FCAC’s glass and ceramic studios, each pumpkin is uniquely different, and they come in all shapes, colors and sizes. From traditional-style orange pumpkins and jack-o’-lanterns to vibrantly colored pumpkins that sparkle, there is sure to be a pumpkin for everyone.

“We are excited to celebrate our 19th Annual Pumpkin Patch. More than 40 artists are creating extraordinary glass and ceramic pumpkins for this well-loved event. With more than 5,000 pumpkins and fall items to choose from, everyone will find that one piece that they just must have,” FCAC Executive Director Bart Hudson said. “Our community is so generous in supporting this fundraiser and we are certainly grateful. Come and share in the excitement of fall.”

The Pumpkin Patch serves as FCAC’s largest annual fundraiser, supporting the nonprofit’s mission of offering affordable art education and outreach programs. Proceeds from the event directly benefit the organization and the many artists who work at FCAC. With a range of new ticket options available for this year’s event, guests are sure to have plenty of opportunities to have their pick of the patch.

First Pick tickets are available for FCAC members for $30, which include early event access starting at 9 am and the opportunity to purchase two pumpkins, allowing for the first pick of the patch. Non-members may also purchase a First Pick ticket for $35, which includes early entry at 10 am and the opportunity to purchase two pumpkins. First Pick tickets also allow guests the opportunity to purchase up to two additional pumpkins after making a single $15 donation to FCAC.

Premium Unlimited tickets are also available for $55, which include early entry at 9 am, unlimited pumpkin purchases, two complimentary drink tickets and raffle entries. The annual Pumpkin Patch will open for First Pick and Premium Unlimited ticket holders until 12 pm. At 1 pm, general admission will take place, with unlimited pumpkin sales and free entry.

Pumpkins come in all shapes, sizes and colors, with prices starting at $20. The event will officially conclude at 5 pm.

UWF HAAS CENTER RESEARCH FUELS NEW CAMPAIGN SHOWCASING NORTHWEST FLORIDA’S MILITARY TALENT

The University of West Florida (UWF) Haas Center has provided critical research driving a new regional campaign, “Military Talent: Mission-Ready Veterans, Business-Ready Results,” launched by Florida’s Great Northwest. The initiative highlights the extraordinary value of Northwest Florida’s military community — particularly transitioning service members and veterans — who offer mission-ready skills and business-ready results to employers.

Funded by the Florida Commerce Defense Reinvestment Grant and Florida’s Great Northwest, the UWF Haas Center’s comprehensive dashboard delivers insights regarding the region’s military workforce. The data is now available on FGNW’s Military Talent Dashboard, serving as a strategic tool for economic development, recruitment and retention of top-tier talent in the 13-county region.

“The University of West Florida is proud to play a role in strengthening the economic vitality of our region through data-driven research,”UWF Interim President Manny Diaz Jr. said. “Our work with Florida’s Great Northwest showcases how the UWF Haas Center can partner with community and industry leaders to demonstrate the value our veterans bring to our economy.”

Key findings from the Haas Center’s research include:

• An average of 5,200 service members transition out of Northwest Florida’s military installations each year, far exceeding previous estimates.

• Nearly 60% hold a bachelor’s degree or higher.

• More than 47% plan to remain in the region after service, with an additional 19% undecided.

“I want to commend Florida’s Great Northwest for launching this campaign, a campaign laser-focused on unlocking opportunity for our veterans and for our economy,” Florida Secretary of Commerce J. Alex Kelly said. “Northwest Florida has long been a center of defense excellence, supporting our heroes and their families and Florida Commerce was grateful to have supported this endeavor with a Defense Reinvestment Grant to seed the necessary research for this campaign to recruit and retain our military expertise in the civilian workforce.”

The Military Talent Dashboard provides a dynamic, data-driven view of the region’s military separation trends, educational attainment and workforce readiness. It stands as a prime example of how research at UWF can directly support regional economic development.

“This data is a game-changer, allowing us to powerfully describe this pool of pre-trained, disciplined, untapped talent to companies in our target industry sectors,” President & CEO of Florida’s Great Northwest Jennifer Conoley said. “The Military Talent Dashboard underscores Northwest Florida’s strategic advantage as a place where employers have access to highly-skilled professionals who are ready for their next career.”

UWF is committed to the region’s economic success, and projects like this exemplify the power of collaboration between higher education, industry and community partners.

“These findings give Northwest Florida an incredible opportunity to connect highly skilled, disciplined and experienced professionals with employers across our target industries,” UWF Haas Center Executive Director Nicole Gislason said. “This research demonstrates the workforce gains our businesses experience as they expand across the northern Gulf Coast.”
