5 Questions with Creatives

Sequential Artist, Riley Middleton

By Dawn Gresko

For Riley Middleton, drawing has been a lifelong habit, beginning at age 3 with a curious eye and a determination to copy everything she could. That childhood challenge of capturing the essence of a subject eventually grew into a love of comics, which she began creating in high school as a way to combine her passion for storytelling with her favorite hobby. Today, Middleton describes herself as a sequential artist, creating comics and zines that embrace the medium’s accessibility, freedom and ability to tell a complete story. Having lived in the Flora-Bama area on and off throughout her life, she brings a distinctly personal perspective to her work, along with plenty of emotion, including the uncomfortable kind when the story calls for it. Middleton will be a vendor at the Pensacola Punk Rock Flea Market on Oct. 18, where she also designed this year’s event logo. Her work can also be found at Small Batches Cafe in Fort Walton Beach. Follow her on Instagram at @thee_night_hag to see what she’s working on next. Barktoberfest Celebrating the Canines for 20 Years

By Mary Donovan McClellan

For 20 years, Pensacola has gone to the dogs for one very special day each fall, and we mean that in the best possible way. On Oct. 18, the Pensacola Humane Society (PHS) will celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Barktoberfest, filling Seville Square and Fountain Park with dogs, dog lovers and plenty of tail-wagging fun. The highly anticipated regional favorite dog-friendly event, Barktoberfest, runs from 10 am to 4 pm and is a day devoted to four-legged friends and their happy humans, all gathered to help animals in need. Best of all, admission is free and all dogs are welcome! No RSVP from you or your pup is required. Barktoberfest has grown into one of the area’s favorite pet-friendly events, featuring vendors, dog contests and races, training demonstrations, children’s activities, food trucks, adoptable animals and more. Behind all the fun is an important purpose. Proceeds from Barktoberfest benefit the PHS and its work providing shelter, medical care, enrichment and second chances to homeless animals throughout Northwest Florida. This year’s event is proudly supported by Beagle Benefactor, Action Therapy Group and Bow Wow Backyard Sponsor, Bob Tyler Toyota. Their support, along with that of numerous local businesses

and community partners, helps PHS keep Barktoberfest free for the entire community.

A Day Made Just for the Pups There may be no better place to be a dog on Oct. 18. And frankly, the humans have a pretty good time, too. Throughout Seville Square and Fountain Park, visitors can browse dozens of vendor booths featuring local businesses, pet products, specialty treats, animal-related services, rescues and community organizations.

October 26 |

PHS was recognized once again by Best Friends Animal Society for achieving No-Kill status in 2025, with a 98.7% save rate, reflecting the organization’s commitment to giving animals in its care every possible opportunity for a positive outcome. That work extends well beyond the shelter. The PHS Pet Pantry helps families experiencing financial challenges keep their pets fed and at home. Foster families provide temporary homes for animals needing extra care or a break from shelter life. Volunteers provide invaluable support through animal care, enrichment, events and outreach. And every adoption creates space for another animal who needs help, one more reason a “just looking” visit to the adoption area can be a little dangerous for the heart.

Celebrating 20 Years and Counting Barktoberfest may happen only once a year, but the work it supports happens every day. There are many ways to be part of that work: adopt, foster, volunteer, donate, become a monthly supporter, or simply share the story of an animal waiting for a home. Every act of kindness makes a difference. The always-popular dog contests give four-legged competitors a chance to show off their personalities, costumes and favorite tricks.

Join the Pensacola Humane Society for the 20th Anniversary Barktoberfest on Sunday, Oct. 18, from 10 am to 4 pm at Seville Square and Fountain Park in Downtown Pensacola.

Dog races add another dose of friendly competition, and plenty of entertainment for spectators. Whether or not every pup actually runs in the intended direction is all part of the fun.

Bring the family. Bring your friends. And most importantly, bring the dog.

Training demonstrations will showcase what our canine companions can accomplish while offering useful information for pet owners. Kids can also head to the Kid’s Zone to enjoy a variety of activities, and animal shelters and rescue organizations will be on site with opportunities to meet furry friends who just might find themselves heading home with loving new families. Add plenty of food trucks, music and thousands of wagging tails, and Barktoberfest becomes much more than a fundraiser. It is a celebration of the bond between people and pets and of a community that continues to show up for animals year after year.

Saving Lives Four Paws at a Time The animals benefiting from Barktoberfest are at the heart of everything the PHS does. Founded in 1943, PHS has spent more than eight decades helping homeless and vulnerable animals find safety, care and loving homes. Today, its work includes adoption, veterinary care, spay and neuter services, fostering, volunteer programs and community outreach. In 2025, 921 animals found homes through PHS, while the organization provided 1,535 spay and neuter services and distributed 13,023 pounds of pet food through its Pet Pantry.

Admission is free, and all dogs are welcome. For more information, visit pensacolahumane.org/Barktoberfest or email barktoberfest@ pensacolahumane.org.

Tradition Takes the Runway By Morgan Cole

Stepping Out in Style Celebrates 50 Years

For 50 years, local faces have taken to the runway for Stepping Out in Style, turning a night of fashion into one of Baptist Health Care Foundation’s signature fundraisers. What began as a small luncheon in 1977 has evolved into a highly anticipated community tradition, drawing hundreds of attendees and support from local businesses year after year. This fall, the event will celebrate its 50th fashion show with a “50 Years of Fashion” theme, looking back at the styles, celebrations and memories that have shaped the fundraising event over the years. Hosted by the Women’s Board of Baptist Health Care Foundation, the milestone event will also bring a few changes, including a new venue and a Friday evening format. This year’s celebration will take place Friday, Oct. 23, at the Hilton on Pensacola Beach. The story of Stepping Out in Style begins a year before the first fashion show. The Women’s Board was founded in 1976 under the leadership of Jane Pace with just 25 members. Today, the group has more than 185 members and has raised nearly $4 million through fundraising efforts like Stepping Out in Style to support programs and services throughout Baptist Health Care. “Inspired by the dedication and service of its members, the event has been a beloved community tradition for 50 years,” Baptist

Health Care Foundation Donor Relations Coordinator Melissa Schmiedeskamp said. Over the years, the event has evolved from a small luncheon into a full-scale fashion production, with Women’s Board members, sponsors, local retailers and longtime attendees helping keep it going year after year. “Its continued success is a testament to the dedication of the Women’s Board members, generous sponsors, local businesses and loyal attendees,” Schmiedeskamp said. The 2026 event will trade its traditional Thursday format for a Friday evening at the beach, giving guests the option to make a night of it or turn the occasion into a weekend getaway. The evening begins at 5:30 pm with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction, followed by the program and live auction at 6:30 pm. The fashion show takes the runway at 7 pm. The anniversary program will revisit five decades of Stepping Out in Style and the impact the fundraiser has made along the way, both for Baptist Health Care and the community. On the runway, professional and community models will showcase fall looks from Bluetique, Colette, Dillard’s and The Market & Mainly Shoes. Each retailer will have its own runway segment, paired with a custom soundtrack to match the look and feel of its collection.

But fashion is only part of the story. More than anything, Stepping Out in Style is about giving back to Baptist Health Care and supporting quality health care for the local community. Each year, the Women’s Board selects a program or service to benefit from the event’s proceeds. Last year, proceeds supported Gulf Breeze Hospital, with the event raising more than $163,000, the largest amount in its history. Proceeds from the 2026 event will again benefit Gulf Breeze Hospital, helping expand

October 26 | services, advance technology and support patient care. “As we prepare for our 50th fashion show, we are positioned for another recordbreaking year,” Schmiedeskamp said. “This continued growth would not be possible without the continued support of our sponsors, attendees and community partners.” The fundraiser is part of the larger mission of Baptist Health Care Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Baptist Health Care. As the area’s only communityowned and locally governed health care system, Baptist relies on donor support to help fund vital programs and services across its facilities. Getting an event of this size onto the runway also takes plenty of work behind the scenes. Planning happens throughout the year, with

the Women’s Board Executive Committee meeting monthly to coordinate details, secure sponsorships, gather silent auction donations and recruit volunteers. This year’s executive committee includes President Cherie Meguess, Vice President Qwana Gable, Secretary Karen Brantley, Volunteer Chair Marcy Miller, Fundraising Chair Heather Irving, Membership Chair Jen Smith and Parliamentarian Jodi Bell.

For guests, the evening offers plenty to enjoy. Admission includes general or VIP seating with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, silent and live auctions, the fashion show and a commemorative swag bag. “Every ticket purchased, sponsorship secured and auction item donated helps advance Baptist Health Care’s mission and strengthens the services available to patients and families throughout our region,” Schmiedeskamp said.

The fundraiser itself is led by Melissa Melvin, who has worked with the Women’s Board for more than 20 years. Her resume includes producing major events around the country, Fifty years later, Stepping including Super Bowl events and productions Out in Style remains a night at Nashville’s Music City Center. of fashion with a purpose, bringing the community Local businesses also continue to play an together to support Baptist Health important role in making the event possible.
