And the new mayor is … well actually it’s Halloween and I don’t know yet. But by the time you’re reading this the results will likely be in. If the contents of my mailbox are any indication, Grover and Brian are in a dead heat.
13
I’ve had the opportunity to interview and talk to both men many times over the years. I think either would make a fine mayor. It will be interesting to see who comes out on top if only to discover whether high-profile endorsements still hold sway. Spencer has backing from mayor Ashton Hayward, Sheriff David Morgan and a number downtown’s prominent business people, lawyers and corporations.

Grover has Quint Studer’s blessing as well as that of local firefighter and police unions and two of the mayoral candidates that lost out in the primaries. Or maybe money will swing the election. The race is the most expensive in the city’s history, and both candidates spent wildly to stuff our mailboxes with flyers. Spencer especially blew through a huge war chest in his effort to catch Grover in the polls.
Whoever comes out (or has come out) on top, I think all Pensacolians will be able to live with the result. The two men are more alike than they are different, after all. More important than who wins the race is what he does with the office. For as far as the city has come under Hayward, our growth has presented us with new challenges and opportunities. The most pressing issues that come to mind are finding a solution for the Port, managing rampant redevelopment within historic neighborhoods and rethinking our development codes so that we can build the city we all want.

So, to our new mayor we say, “Congratulations and get to work.” Despite his stumbles, Ashton Hayward has set the model for what a modern CEOmayor looks like in Pensacola. It’s time for our new mayor to pick up where Hayward left off, maintaining and building upon the momentum he created. Downtown Crowd is locally owned and operated. A WORD FROM LISSA DEES, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE DOWNTOWN IMPROVEMENT BOARD DIB Thanks You for Being a Part of the Downtown Story We all have a story about what downtown Pensacola means to us. To some it’s a destination where we bring our friends and families to experience spectacular events from the art, music and culture-filled Foo Foo Festival to the festive season-long First City Lights Festival, kicking off later this month on November 23 with a spectacular lighting ceremony and Winterfest Elf Parade. To some it’s where we call home; a place we enjoy living and joining the local community. To many it’s a place we create memories with loved ones, whether taking a simple walk in Plaza Ferdinand on a bright, sunny afternoon, checking out the many unique shops or enjoying a relaxing dinner at one of the many esteemed restaurants. Regardless of the reasons you come downtown, we find that words like “destination,” “family,” and “experience” continue to pop up in conversations with the people who live, work and play in our beautiful downtown district. As we approach Thanksgiving and the holiday season, we feel it’s appropriate to recognize some of the people who contribute to our exceptional downtown as a thriving destination. Therefore, we would like to thank our many merchants who bring vibrancy and variety to the guests of downtown Pensacola. The residents and visitors who choose to spend their time with us and support local businesses; we hope you join us for Shop Small Saturday
on November 24 to further celebrate our local community. We would also like to thank the public for voting downtown Pensacola as Best of the Coast’s ‘Best Shopping Area/District’ and ‘Best Place to Meet Your Future Mr./Mrs.’. We are humbled by your support. We thank our Parking and Traffic Committee for ensuring that parking is handled efficiently, with the end-user in mind. Our Finance Committee for applying their expertise to make sure our DIB dollars are invested strategically. Our Mayor and City of Pensacola for their unwavering support and partnership. Our Downtown Improvement Board members whose generous dedication of time and effort continue to bring positive changes to the heart of this city. We thank our staff at the DIB for their hard-working and enthusiastic attitude. Our Parking Ambassadors who help keep downtown functional and secure and our Cleaning Ambassadors who keep the area beautiful. We thank the Palafox Market vendors and patrons for supporting local community with an eclectic mix of handmade, homemade or home-grown offerings. We also thank the public for voting it for Best of the Coast’s ‘Best Outdoor Market/Farmer’s Market’. So, this is a thank you. Thank you all for being a part of our downtown story.

W
hen it first appeared in 2014, the name Foo Foo Fest left most people scratching their heads and asking, “What is that?” Today, Pensacolians know that Foo Foo Fest is the grand umbrella that encompasses the many artistic and cultural events that take place in the first two weeks of November. From one-of-a-kind performances to huge art installations, even the Great Gulf Coast Arts Festival and the Blue Angels Homecoming Air Show are all a part of Foo Foo Fest. The idea is that by giving one name to Pensacola’s many fall events, the folks that work so hard to bring visitors here can market not just one event here or there, but a whole twoweek festival. The highlight of last year’s festival was undoubtedly the Umbrella Sky Project that drew thousands to Intendencia Street downtown. Many of the selfies snapped beneath those colorful umbrellas still serve as profile pictures on local social media accounts.
While there are no umbrellas this year, Foo Foo Fest 2018 includes a whopping 45 events. We can’t feature them all here’ so we’ve picked out a few that we’re most looking forward too. You can check out the full schedule of events at FooFooFest.com.

T.H.A.T.
o what is T.H.A.T.? The Happy Art Tour is a sensory emergent exhibit with five major rooms. Each room has an aspect you can see, smell, hear, feel and even taste. T.H.A.T is going to be a traveling exhibit with its first stop in downtown Pensacola. This hour-long tour is filled with photo-ops to snap the perfect Instagram picture. Each installation was created by local artists such as Rafi Was Here Studios, Blue Collar Creative, The Alcohol Ink Lady and more. “As we go along, some of the installations will come with us and be a permanent part of The Happy Art Tour, but in each new location we go to, we will collaborate with local artists to incorporate each city’s culture.” Each local artist interpreted happiness in their own original way to contribute to T.H.A.T’s overarching theme of happiness. Each room’s goal is to draw out joy from each visitor whether they are young or old. The rooms range from elements of the beach to the forest to things that are just plain fun, so engage with the art and discover how you define happiness.
CUBED
Luminous L
ast year’s CUBED installation was one of the best events Foo Foo Fest had to offer, and the huge cubes produced by the local artists were a welcome addition to downtown’s public art scene. CUBED is back this year, but this time with a digital twist. Whereas last year’s event had artists paint, sculpt or draw on huge cubes, digital artworks this year will be projected onto the cubes, and another cube made entirely of LED screens will display digital works as well. CUBED Luminous will partner with UWF Historic Trust and the Pensacola Museum of Art to feature art from invited and open call artists. The works will be displayed at the UWF Historic Trust’s Museum Plaza.

What the
?
Great Gulf Coast Arts Festival T
he event that should need no introduction. The Great Gulf Coast Arts Festival draws artists and art lovers from across the Southeast for this three-day juried show that has been happening since 1973. Painters, potters, photographers, sculptors, carpenters, jewelers and all other kinds of artists and craftspeople fill Seville Square downtown to show and sell their work. Whether you’re looking for that perfect piece to go above your fireplace or just want to browse a huge and unique collection of original art works, the Greater Gulf Coast Arts Festival has it all and is a definite highlight on Pensacola’s cultural. The invited international Artist for the 2018 festival is Abignail Nnaji, a Nigerian painter known for her abstract and experimental paintings depicting daily life. The festival will also feature works from two designated emerging artists. Pensacolians James Amerson, a sculpture, and Lawrence Lazare, a landscape and street photographer, will share a booth at the festival as the part of the GGAF’s Emerging Artists program designed to introduce new artists to the arts festival scene. Admission to the Greater Gulf Coast Arts Festival is free. Pets are not allowed.
Women of Fire E
very year, the Foo Foo Fest brings something new, and this year a spotlight is shining on the women who use fire to create art. An exhibit hosted by Pensacola State College and First City Art Center will bring female blacksmiths, glass artists and more together for a display of artistry with fire. The exhibit was set up to showcase some women in fields typically associated with male artists, and also to impress the power and artistry that can be obtained when working with fire. Featured artists in the exhibit include Corrina Sephora, blacksmith, Hillary Heckard, glassblower, Rachel Wright, mixed media glass artist and Meredith Hartsfield, torch worked glass. The gallery will be open until Dec. 7, but an opening reception will be held Nov. 1 from 6 pm to 8 pm. During the reception, attendees will have a chance to see torch work, blacksmith and glassblowing demonstrations as well as have an opportunity to speak with the artists.

UNITY Project & Courage Wall T
his year’s Foo Foo Festival has become more than an artistic outlet for the Pensacola community. Through the inclusion of the UNITY Project and Courage Wall, Foo Foo Festival is also an expression of Pensacola’s diversity and uniqueness. The UNITY Project and Courage Wall were created by Sunday’s Child, a non-profit whose missions is to inspire equality and inclusion within the community. Both the UNITY Project and Courage Wall are located at the UWF Historic Trust’s Museum Plaza and are available from November 1 through 12. The UNITY Project has 32 posts with different identifiers: “I’m a parent; I’m a veteran; I identify as LGBTQ.” Participants of this project will tie ribbons to each post they identify with, and eventually, as more people contribute, the ribbons will all connect into one. The purpose of this project is to show how everyone in this community is connected to each other. This project also shows that Pensacola became the the vibrant city it is today because of the diversity of this community. The Courage Wall is a large chalkboard with the open ended phrase “I wish I had the courage to…” The Courage Wall inspires the Pensacola community to reveal intimate stories about themselves. These anonymous stories will then become the story of the Pensacola community. The goal of this wall is to promotes Pensacola’s diversity. The wall shows that each individual person within the Pensacola community contributes to the culture and growth of this community, so pick up a piece of chalk and let your Pensacolian voice be heard.
Science on the Street M
ore of a happening than a single event, The Pensacola MESS Hall is bringing science to Science to Palafox Street with their interactive set of “Science on the Street” exhibits. These science stations will line the streets of downtown Pensacola with activities that will be available for the entire duration of Foo Foo Fest.
This year’s exhibits will play with your mind as they unravel the science behind illusions. In addition to the exhibits, available for the duration of the festival, there will be interactive programs including scientists demonstrating illusions and allowing visitors to create their own.

Winter fest is here!
By Will Isern It’s not the holiday season in Pensacola until Santa leads his merry cast of characters in the Elf Parade through the streets of downtown to officially kickoff Winterfest, and this year’s event promises to big bigger and better than ever.
What began as a neighborhood holiday party has grown into a month-long event series that takes over downtown Pensacola and includes trolley rides, the Elf Parade, visits with Santa, live performances of classic holiday stories and much more. The Elf Parade on Nov. 23 also serves as the beginning of the First City Festival of Lights which illuminates Palafox Street with hundreds of thousands of Christmas lights for the entire holiday season and draws thousands visitors downtown from across the city and around the region. Winterfest organizers saw their biggest crowds ever last year when, for the first
time, the Elf Parade ended with a fireworks display over Palafox Street. Fireworks are on the schedule again this year and new events for 2018 include a showing of The Polar Express at the Saenger on Theatre on Nov. 24 Santa’s Cookie Festival on Dec. 1 and a toy drive on Dec. 8, among others.

BY GINA CASTRO
All hail the queen, resplendent in her return. It has been eight long years the Swedish pop icon Robyn release the now legendary Body Talk albums, and fans have waited on baited breath ever since for new music from the only artist to make you want to cry on the dancefloor.
The production is lush, as always, with influences from House, Disco, all Funk. Don’t miss this one.
Florence + The Machine released their new album High as Hope in June 2018. Florence + The Machine are known for their intimate approach to not only the lyrics but also the deliverance of each note both instrumentally and vocally. If you love the indie pop genre and ballads with a gospel flare, then High as Hope is your album. Florence’s riveting voice will certainly give you chills, and her poetic lyrics will resonate with you beyond the length of each track. This album’s haunting chorus and minimal usage of instruments emphasizes on Florence Welch’s amazing vocals because the vocals contrast with the dark sound of the instruments. The poetic lyrics reveal Welch’s emotionally raw story of her journey to body positivity. This album is

The Skivvies
November 1 and 2
Pensacola Little Theater will host the Skivvies Nov. 1 and 2 at 9:30 pm. While the rest of Pensacola will begin turning in after a long day of FooFooing, a troupe of entertainers who strip down their music – and down to their undies – will begin turning up the heat on stage at the Pensacola Little Theatre. The Skivvies’ tasteful leaders Nick Cearley (All Shook Up, Little Shop of Horrors) plays the ukulele, melodica and guitar, while his mischievous curly-headed partner Lauren Molina (Rock of Ages, Sweeney Todd) sings along to electric cello and kalimba. Their unlikely mash-ups, like the pairing of Sir Mix-A-Lot’s ìBaby Got Backî with the toddler favorite ìHead, Shoulders, Knees and Toesî, their quirky instruments, delicate voices, impeccable physique and wry sensibility keep audiences laughing and awing over their unique talent. For more information or to buy tickets, visit www.pensacolalittletheatre.com.
Desire Desire Desire / For Whom the Southern Belle Tolls November 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 9, 10 and 11
Pensacola Little Theater will host Desire Desire Desire / For Whom the Southern Belle Tolls throughout November. Pensacola Little Theatre’s FooFoo Festival entry this year is a night of hilarious one-acts by Christopher Durang. A set of Tennessee Williams parodies (A Streetcar Named Desire, The Glass Menagerie), the fading Southern belle, Amanda, tries to prepare her hypersensitive, hypochondriac son Lawrence for “the feminine caller” but he rather play with his collection of glass cocktail stirrers. If you enjoy Tennessee Williams or just a great laugh, don’t miss this. For more information or to buy tickets, visit www. pensacolalittletheatre.com.
