Marie, Jenny and Josh Wattier are a family of self-proclaimed crafty nerds, who love finding creative ways to bring their favorite fandoms to life–from Pirates of the Caribbean and Batman to Demon Slayer and more. The Mobile-based trio has been making etchings out of wood and metal for about two years. What started as a laser engraver bought for their own creative projects soon evolved into selling at small local markets, and has now blossomed to traveling to conventions and connecting with fellow nerds across the country.
You can see the family’s work on display at Gallery Night Pensacola and Mobile Art Walk every month, as well as at the South Alabama Comic Comic Con and Mobile Bay Anime Fest later this year. To learn more on upcoming events, sneak peeks of upcoming releases and the occasional sale on old favorites, follow Nerdvana Etchings on Facebook and Instagram.
What inspired you to make etchings?
We kind of stumbled into this style of art. We got our laser engraver without a real plan of what to use it for, and when looking up what other people make with these machines we found some making layered designs, mostly of nature scenes. We aren’t really nature people, but that style of art is something we hadn’t seen before, so we tried it. Needless to say, we got a little obsessed.
What helps you map out how a piece will come together?
It’s really the colors that determine the makeup of a piece. For almost all of our artworks, each color is a different layer of wood. So, when we look at making a new piece, it really comes down to what colors there are, and how they have to be layered so that the piece has depth but nothing is so deep that it gets lost. The wood we use for the majority of our pieces is only 1/16-inch-thick.
What role do each of you have in the creative process for a piece?
Marie is our inspiration and logistics brain. She keeps the whole operation moving, from coordinating events and vendor opportunities to gathering fan suggestions and making sure we’re ready for show day. She also does a lot of the detailed painting—especially our earrings— and makes sure every detail is handled with care.
Jenny is the creative engine behind our designs. Taking the suggestions and inspiration from Marie, Jenny is the one who brings the designs to life, spending hours drawing, re-drawing, and layering each piece so it feels unique and visually strong. Jenny is the reason our art has such a distinct style and depth.
Josh is our laser engraver master and quality control guardian. He runs the laser cutting process that transforms Jenny’s designs into clean, precise layers, and he’s the one who assembles everything—gluing, sealing, varnishing and making sure each piece is sturdy, aligned and beautiful. Josh makes sure what we create is just as impressive as what we envision.
Do you each share a studio or space? How does that work?
People are shocked to hear that we don’t have a studio. Our engraver is set up in our garage, all of our art has been made from our dining room table, or whatever folding tables we can fit in there, which means it is literally coming from our home to yours.
What’s your dream project or goal for Nerdvana Etchings?
We have built an incredible local community of wonderful people who love our art and have supported us over and over again. We’d really love to keep expanding our Nerdvana fam to include nerds from all over the country, and all over the world. Unfortunately we will not be at Pensacon this year, but we hope to be on the list for next year!

If sweet treats and plants speak your love language, look no further than The Garden Cafe at Pinelands Nursery in Milton. This hidden gem features indoor and outdoor seating where you can enjoy some one-onone time with your partner over a made-to-order coffee, tea or creamy scoop of gelato. After a treat, spend more quality time by travelling into the nursery and adventuring through the botanicals. Engage your date and your senses with a wine tasting experience at A Curious Wine Shop curated just for the two of you. Sip and savor in the shop’s unique locale of the Historic Sacred Heart Hospital, or bring home a tasting box with three wine samples for a more intimate experience at home. While you might not be able to take your date on a trip across the globe, you can offer impressive flavors from around the world–from France, Italy and Germany to Argentina, New Zealand and beyond. There is beauty in simplicity: so grab a basket, a pair of champagne flutes and head for an outdoor picnic at one of Pensacola’s picturesque beaches. Take your Valentine along with all their favorite goodies to watch the sunset at a remote spot at Fort Pickens, or find a secluded patch of sand along Opal or Johnson beaches. Elevate the experience by enlisting help from Pensacola Picnics, who offer beautiful boutique picnic services providing setup and food. For more on picnic preparation services, visit pensacolapicnicco.com.
Grandma was right: food can be the easiest way to win someone’s heart. What’s even better is cooking up something special together with a class at Bodacious Shops or Pensacola Cooks. Learning together can make for a fun date filled with laughs and tasty bites. While Bodacious and Pensacola Cooks offer monthly classes, you can always book a private cooking class to get more alone time. Find out more on classes and reservations at bodaciousshops.com or pensacolacooks.com.
For the outdoorsy couple, appreciate your date and Pensacola’s natural beauty from a different perspective by taking a tandem kayak along the Bayou Texar or through Pensacola Bay. A true testament to teamwork and communication, tandem kayaking involves two people paddling a single, longer kayak with synchronized strokes for shared adventure. Don't rock the boat and there will be nothing but smooth sailing for you and your Valentine.
You don’t need a poet’s way with words, instead let nature write a romantic piece for you: witness a sky afire as the sun sets over the forest, marvel at the moonlight sparkling on the water at nightfall and listen to the songs of crickets and frogs echoing through the night. All you have to do is camp under the stars and cuddle-up fireside in Blackwater State Forest Campground. Or, if roughing it isn’t your idea of romance, you can still enjoy a starry night by staying in a tree-top cabin at Coldwater Gardens.
Destress and retreat from the everyday hustle to reconnect with a couple's massage. Coastal Vibes Massage offers couples packages that let you each choose your massage experience for a soft or firm touch. You can always pair the massage with some body scrubs, hot stones and aromatherapy to really relax and unwind together. For more, check out coastalvibesmassage.com.

Each year, Pensacola trades its laid-back beach vibes for something a little louder, brighter and way more sparkly. Gold, purple and green take over the streets, beads and krewe pins become the local currency and extravagant costumes become the norm. There’s no mistaking it—Mardi Gras has arrived.
“As the clearinghouse for everything Pensacola Mardi Gras for 25 years,” President of Pensacola Mardi Gras Danny Zimmern said. “We’ve watched the celebration grow into a full season, starting with the Kick Off Celebration on January 3 and culminating in a Fat Tuesday Celebration at Seville Quarter on February 17.”
Pensacola might not have the biggest or oldest Mardi Gras, but after more than 150 years of celebration, it proudly holds its own alongside New Orleans and Mobile in both spirit and celebration. Year after year, float by float, Pensacola’s Mardi Gras has grown into a celebration the city shows up for in a big way—bringing people together, giving back and making Carnival uniquely its own.
“Over the course of the season, more than 100 krewes participate in a series of local parades, balls and festive events leading up to the Fat Tuesday Celebration,” Zimmern said. "Last year’s Grand Mardi Gras Parade had over 225 entries, and according to parade applications, more than 6,300 people participated.”
From the high-energy Mardi Gras Mambo at the Pensacola Bay Center to brass bands and packed sidewalks energizing Palafox Street during Second Line Tuesdays, Pensacola serves up a full lineup of events that keep the Mardi Gras energy going strong year after year. Here’s a rundown of all the Mardi Gras festivities happening across the city this month.

Mardi Gras krewes, musicians and spectators are invited to come together to fill the sidewalks of Palafox Street with music, foot traffic and lively energy during the construction of the New Palafox Project. Participants are invited to join however they choose—walk the full route, jump in as the procession passes or simply watch, wave and enjoy the moment. Festive attire and ceremonial umbrellas are encouraged. Second Line Tuesdays are free, and everyone is invited to attend. Each procession lasts about 90 minutes with a new starting location announced every Monday on Pensacola Mardi Gras social media. Pensacola is experiencing transformation on every level. From major infrastructure improvements and unprecedented residential growth to leadership changes and national recognition as one of the best places to live, the city is on the move. Through it all, residents, business owners and students are witnessing the city’s evolution firsthand—one that honors its identity as a historic centerpiece of the Panhandle while boldly embracing a new era of cultural and urban growth.
Yet amid all this change, one event remains a constant haven for creativity, capturing the soul and spirit of fan culture. Captivating fans of all ages, it draws talent and artistry from the local community and around the world. That event is Pensacon, Pensacola’s annual pop culture convention.

cosplay and more. Now in its 13th year, Pensacon seeks to uphold its values of community, conversation and culture, uniting fans and creators in celebration of the art of years past and eager anticipation of the art that is to come.
“Last year, we had just under 100 celebrity guests when you include all of the actors, authors, artists, writers and wrestlers,” Pensacon Director of Media and Guest Relations Julio Diaz said. “We draw from all over the pop culture world, not just from people that are in front of the camera, but from people that are behind the camera, too. We also invite other creatives whose work often leads to projects that will be on camera, like comics and novels and things like that.“
Two of the most anticipated guests this year are Cara Buono and Randy Havens, alumni of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things , the science-fiction horror phenomenon that recently concluded its 10-year run with its fifth season wrapping up in late 2025. Buono played Karen Wheeler in the show, but she is also known for her roles in other popular shows like The Sopranos and CW’s Supergirl. Havens played the science teacher Mr. Clark in Stranger Things, also having played roles in movies such as Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3 and Godzilla: King of Monsters
Since its inception in 2013, Pensacon remains a local melting pot for fans of comic books, film, games, anime,
The convention returns to the Pensacola Bay Center from February 20 to 22, offering venues, panels and celebrities for fans of many genres from horror thrillers to science fiction.

Cast reunions of old favorites also largely define this year’s guest line-up. Actors Jason Patric, Alex Winter, Jamison Newlander, Billy Wirth and Chance Michael Corbitt, the stars of Joel Schumacher’s vampire thriller The Lost Boys reunite at Pensacon, as do Alex Hyde-White, Rebecca Staab, Jay Underwood and Michael Bailey Smith—the original Fantastic Four, who recently cameoed in Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Actors from the delightfully gory Terrifier franchise also make an appearance at the con, including David Howard Thornton, the actor of Art the Clown himself.
This year’s Pensacon welcomes even more big names to the convention, including Frank Grillo, who plays Rick Flag Sr. across the new DC

Comics screen entries, including the critically acclaimed Peacemaker TV show and the 2025 box-office hit Superman . However, some of these big names only appear at the convention on certain days. Will Wheaton, legendary actor of Star Trek: The Next Generation and a prolific writer and speaker, will visit Pensacon on February 20 and 21. Sara Gilbert and Lecy Goranson of The Connors, Michael Ironside of Total Recall and Michelle Hurd of Star Trek: Picard are at the convention from February 21 to 22. Mindy Cohn, who played Natalie Green on The Facts of Life and voiced Velma Dinkley in the Scooby-Doo franchise from 2002 to 2015, will make her appearance on February 20. Schedule your days accordingly by using the official Pensacon mobile app so you can be sure to meet and greet with these incredible actors.
Multiple local businesses will also host Pensacon-related events and activities alongside the main convention itself. For instance, this year, the Fish House will transmogrify into Harry Potter’s Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, adding new magical beverages to the menu— Butterbeer, The Goblet of Fire and more—and hosting all of a wizard’s favorite activities: Quidditch, wand choosing and taking pictures with a Dementor (well, maybe that’s not a universally favorite activity…).
Pensacon’s popular costume contests will return this year, divided into two categories. The adults contest (ages 13 and older) will be held at the Henry Roberts Activity Center at First United Methodist Church of Pensacola, starting at 3 pm on February 21. The kids contest (12 and under) will take place at the Poseidon’s Bay Stage in front of the Pensacola Bay Center from noon to 1 pm. These contests welcome cosplayers of all backgrounds to try out, so do not be afraid to sign up at pensacon.com.
Pensacon 2026 will be held February 21 through 22 at the Pensacola Bay Center at 201 E. Gregory St. in downtown Pensacola. Ticketing, celebrity autographs, photo ops and the vendor floor will be located at the primary convention venue, the Pensacola Bay Center.
Most official events and activities will take place from 1 to 7 pm on Friday, 10 am to 6 pm on Saturday and from 10 am to 5 pm on Sunday. Visit the Venues page on the Pensacon website for the complete list of official Pensacon events and venue locations.
“I just want to make sure that everybody really knows that Pensacon is for everybody," Diaz said. "It's certainly about the fans and the fan experience, but you don't have to be an uber nerd to enjoy Pensacon. There is

something at Pensacon for everybody. I always kind of talk about it as the fellowship of fandom. It's a place where you can enjoy the things you enjoy and meet other people who enjoy those things.”
Both single-day and weekend passes are on sale now and can be purchased online at purplepass.com. Threeday passes cost $112.98, while single-day passes range from $60.12 to $71.12, depending on the day.
For the latest updates and the complete 2026 schedule of events, download the official Pensacon app on your smartphone.
For more information, visit pensacon.com or follow @Pensacon on Facebook and @PensacolaPensacon on Instagram.

The Center for Information Warfare Training welcomed a familiar face back as its new leader January 16. Capt. John Copeland succeeded Capt. Sarah Sherwood during a change of command ceremony just outside the front doorstep of CIWT headquarters on Naval Air Station Pensacola’s Corry Station. The presiding officer was Rear Adm. Greg Huffman, commander of Naval Education and Training Command.
“It’s a privilege to be among the leaders, the instructors and the phenomenal staff at one of the largest and most complex learning centers in our Navy, responsible for the critical mission of training and developing information warfighters,” Huffman said. “The skills our Sailors learn here are central to how we fight and win and foundational to every single naval operation across our Navy.”
Copeland arrives from Fort Meade, Maryland, where he served as intelligence director for U.S. Fleet Cyber Command, Navy Space Command, Joint Force Headquarters-Cyber (Navy) and 10th Fleet. From 2022 to 2024, he commanded CIWT’s Information Warfare Training Command Virginia Beach schoolhouse.
Copeland’s military career began in 1987 when he enlisted in the Marine Corps. His first duty station was at Corry Station, where he learned Morse code while training as a Radio Battalion Marine. He became a Navy intelligence officer after graduating from University of MissouriKansas City in 2002 and earning a commission through Officer Candidate School at Naval Air Station Pensacola.
His operational tours include intelligence officer assignments aboard USS Iwo Jima and USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, as well as deployments to Afghanistan, Lebanon and Germany. He’s also held various leadership positions at Naval Information Forces, U.S. Cyber Command, and Navy and Marine Corps Intelligence Training Center.
“Capt. Copeland comes to CIWT with an impressive slate of operational assignments with the Navy and Marine Corps, expertise at the joint and combatant commander staff level and a very successful tour commanding IWTC Virginia Beach,” Huffman said. “I am confident he will lead CIWT to accomplish even more incredible things, and I am excited to see how he will shape the next generation of information warfighters.”

As one of the Navy’s largest learning centers, CIWT provides instruction for over 26,000 students every year, delivering information warfare professionals to the fleet and joint services. The command is staffed by nearly 1,200 personnel and instructors who manage resources, develop curriculum and deliver more than 200 state-ofthe-art courses for cryptologic, information systems and electronics technicians; intelligence and cyber specialists and officers in the information warfare community.
Copeland becomes CIWT’s 30th commanding officer.
“As we move forward together, we will continue to retool and refine our information warfare foundry through continuous process improvement from boot camp to combat,” he said. “We will create lethal, resilient Sailors that crush our competition today and will be ready for tomorrow’s challenges.”
Sherwood, who assumed CIWT command in July 2024, led four schoolhouses, two detachments and 15 training sites throughout the United States and Japan.
With Navy recruiting at its highest levels since 2002 – a “great problem to have,” Huffman said – CIWT achieved almost 140 additional course convenes across its Information Warfare Training Command Corry Station, Virginia Beach, Monterey and San Diego schoolhouses, sometimes teaching three shifts and reducing the backlog of students awaiting instruction to a five-year low.
Sherwood led a first-of-its-kind training-optimization initiative that identified and corrected 2,800 training gaps, directly improving information warfare community readiness. Her advocacy secured millions in funding for critical training advancements, including a partnership with Pearson Vue that saved the Navy $28 million in development costs and pilot program for an artificial intelligence-powered curriculum developer.
In addition, she oversaw the design of four new defensive cyber operations courses and laid the foundation for maritime cyber warfare officer training pipeline development. Sherwood, a 2001 graduate of Northwestern University who also holds a Master of Business Administration in international finance from University of Maryland, deflected the praise.
Under her charge, CIWT maintained its 50-year accreditation from the Council on Occupational Education, the longest of any NETC learning center, earning an unprecedented six commendations.
Sherwood said she takes pride in how CIWT strengthened its connection with NAVIFOR, Naval Information Warfare Systems Command, NETC, Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Information Warfare (OPNAV N2N6) and all partner stakeholders. Sherwood is moving on to a new position at the Pentagon.
