A LETTER FROM THE TEAM Football has always been measured in cycles. Every four years, the World Cup arrives and, for a few extraordinary weeks, the rhythm of everyday life seems to change with it. Plans are rearranged, evenings are protected, screens appear everywhere and conversations begin and end with football. This year was no different. It has been a fiercely competitive and exciting season, culminating in a tournament that once again reminded us of football’s remarkable ability to command the attention of the world. Four years can feel like a long time in football. Yet it also makes me reflect on just how much can happen in a much shorter space of time. This edition marks our eighth issue in two years, our fourth of the year, Twelfth Cover and another anniversary for Ball. In that time, the publication has continued to grow, adapt and redefine what it wants to be. Just as the game never stands still, neither do we. There is something fitting about reaching this point during a season defined by competition, change and ambition. At Ball, we are entering our own next chapter. Over the coming months, our readers will begin to see that evolution take shape as we introduce new ideas, new ways of telling stories and a new direction for the platform. We are excited to share more about the changes happening behind the scenes and, most importantly, where they will take us next. Perhaps that is what reaching an APEX really represents. Not an ending, but the point from which you can see how far you have come and decide where you want to go next. That sentiment feels particularly fitting for our cover star, Andrew Omobamidele. Andrew’s story is one shaped by progression, character and an understanding that growth rarely happens without change. Behind the intensity of the footballer is someone grounded, thoughtful and remarkably self-aware. There is something instantly comforting about speaking to Shania Hayles. Within minutes, the interview stops feeling like an interview altogether. The conversation drifts naturally between football, family, holidays, reality television, Lego and coffee. There are stories about rainy training sessions, watching her nephew play football, travelling with teammates and laughing about friends who snore loud enough to keep an entire room awake. It feels less like sitting opposite an international footballer and more like catching up with someone you’ve known for years. That feeling says everything about Hayles. “I like to think that I’m a caring person,” she tells me. “Kindness is important to me. That’s simply who I am.”
IT IS IMPOSSIBLE NOT TO B EL IEVE H ER. For all the confidence people might assume comes with playing professional football, Hayles describes herself very differently. She is naturally shy, introverted and still gets nervous meeting new people. Social media often paints athletes as larger than life personalities, but she laughs at the idea that people might think she is one of them. “I think people see me and assume I’m really confident,” she says. “But I’m actually the opposite.” That honesty becomes one of the defining themes of our conversation. Hayles never tries to present a polished version of herself. She speaks openly about the difficult moments alongside the joyful ones, and perhaps that vulnerability is what makes her so easy to connect with. Away from football, life moves at a gentler pace.
She loves spending time with her family. If she has a few days off, you’ll probably find her watching her nephew play football, walking the family Cockapoo, Honey, or heading to the cinema. Recently, she has rediscovered a childhood hobby that brings her a surprising amount of peace. “Lego,” she laughs.
Spider Man sets. Cars. Flowers. “I used to love it as a kid. Recently I thought about what I really enjoyed growing up and it was Lego. It’s just peaceful.” It is an answer that perfectly captures her personality. Even the hobbies she chooses are quiet, thoughtful and unhurried. 21
Her ideal holiday is equally simple. “The Maldives,” she says without hesitation. Not because of luxury. Because she loves swimming, sitting by the sea and switching off completely. “I could happily just be at the beach with nothing else around.” For someone who spends so much of the year competing in one of the most demanding environments imaginable, peace has become something she values deeply. Falling in love with football Football was never part of some carefully planned childhood dream. In fact, her introduction to the game happened almost by accident. Her mum was working and needed somewhere for her daughter to spend the day. A neighbour was going to football, so Shania went along too. Her first memory has nothing to do with scoring goals. It is about rain. “My mum dropped me off with my packed lunch and left for work,” she remembers, smiling. “It was pouring down and I couldn’t understand why we were still playing.” The coach insisted rain was the perfect weather for football. Young Shania strongly disagreed. “I remember thinking, ‘Why have you left me here?’” Despite that unforgettable first session, something about the game stayed with her. She returned for every football camp she could, spending school holidays kicking a ball from morning until late afternoon.

TH E PATHWAY WAS ST ILL DEVELO PING “It just became football, football, football.” Looking back now, she struggles to remember life before it. Unlike many young players today, however, Hayles did not grow up believing women’s football could automatically become a career. The pathway was still developing. The visibility simply wasn’t there. It wasn’t until much later that she realised football could become her profession. “I don’t think when I was six I thought I could be a footballer.” Today, she understands exactly how important representation can be. “When I was younger there was only one Black player that I looked at and thought, ‘I could be like her.’” Now she hopes another young girl might one day look at her in exactly the same way.

TH E JOURN EY WAS NEVER HERS A LO NE Every successful footballer has people whose sacrifices rarely make the headlines.
She speaks about those years with enormous gratitude rather than nostalgia.
For Hayles, those people are her parents.
Football may have opened the door.
She joined Aston Villa’s academy at fifteen, meaning regular journeys from Burton upon Trent to Birmingham after school. “My mum wasn’t the greatest driver,” she laughs affectionately. “But she’d get in the car, she’d drive me there, wait for me and then drive me home.” Her dad did exactly the same. Those evenings became routine. Without them, she knows her career could have looked very different. “As soon as I could drive, I wanted to take myself because I didn’t want it to be as much of a commitment for them.”
Her family helped her walk through it. The sacrifices were not only theirs. While friends spent weekends at parties or simply hanging out together, Hayles was travelling, training and chasing opportunities. Looking back, she realises how much she quietly gave up. If she could speak to that younger version of herself now, she would not offer football advice. She would simply remind her to appreciate how far she had already come. “Sometimes we forget to give ourselves a pat on the back.” It is a sentence that says as much about the woman she has become as the player she continues to be.

Caught Offside by HMRC. Hidden liabilities from agent fees to Benefits in Kind. Recent years have seen an increase in HMRC enquiries into footballers’ finances, not just directed at the individual player but also at agent and club level. The use of agents is an established norm in the footballing world, with players often using agents to negotiate new contracts, transfers and sponsorship deals. While many might presume that any fees paid by a club to an agent are a tax issue for the agent directly, and not reportable for the player, the reality can often be an own goal in the form of an unexpected personal tax bill.

In fact, recent HMRC guidance has made clear that even where all money changes hands between the club and the players’ agents, players can still be liable to Income Tax and National Insurance on these amounts under the new ‘dual representation’ rules, as a form of taxable benefit. ost footballers start thinking about life after football when retirement appears on the horizon.
William Troost-Ekong has started building his long before the final whistle. When we speak on a Wednesday evening, he is less than twenty four hours away from boarding a flight to South Africa to join the World Cup broadcast team. It would be easy to keep the conversation short. Instead, he spends nearly an hour reflecting on football, leadership, family, business, identity and the lessons that have shaped him over the last decade. It quickly becomes clear that this is not just a conversation about football. Perhaps that’s because Troost-Ekong himself has moved beyond the idea of being defined by a single role. Scroll through his social media profile and you’ll find a description that feels more like a founder’s résumé than a footballer’s biography: Athlete. Investor. Founder. Broadcaster. Football remains at the centre of his story, but it is no longer the only chapter. Born to a Dutch mother and Nigerian father, Troost-Ekong’s story began between two worlds. Growing up in Hoofddorp, a town just outside Amsterdam, he experienced two cultures from an early age. His mother worked for KLM, making regular trips to Nigeria part of family life. Those journeys would help shape how he viewed the world. “I think the biggest memory and things that I learned about was different cultures, different styles of upbringing,” he says.

Long before football took him across continents, curiosity already had. His childhood was spent moving between communities, traditions and perspectives. Friends came from different backgrounds, different faiths and different corners of the world. Looking back, those experiences laid the foundations for what would become one of his defining strengths. “I’ve kind of tried to make that my superpower,” he explains. “Being able to connect people and understand people.” His first football memory is remarkably simple. A school game. A young boy standing on one side of the pitch waiting for the ball to finally come his way. Just before the end, it did. He scored. From that moment, football became the centre of his world. Like many children growing up in the Netherlands, he spent countless hours playing street football. Local courts became classrooms. Summer evenings stretched until darkness forced everyone home. Football was not yet a profession. It was simply joy. At twelve years old, he moved to England to attend boarding school alongside his siblings. Once again, he found himself adapting to a new environment and meeting people from all over the world. Looking back now, those experiences feel almost prophetic. Football would eventually take him across countries, leagues and cultures. Different dressing rooms. Different languages. Different expectations. Yet wherever he went, he found a way to connect. The ability to understand people became every bit as valuable as the ability to read a game.
That quality would eventually lead him to one of the greatest honours of his career: captaining Nigeria. For many players, leadership is associated with authority. Troost-Ekong sees it differently. To him, leadership is responsibility. Responsibility to teammates. Responsibility to supporters. Responsibility to a nation where football has the power to unite millions. “It meant a lot to me,” he says. “You can change the mood of a country by winning games or losing games.” When he first joined the national team in 2015, there were very few players who, like him, had grown up outside Nigeria before choosing to represent the country internationally. Over time, that changed. He believes his generation helped create a pathway for others who felt Nigerian, regardless of where they were born. Looking back, that legacy appears to matter just as much as anything achieved on the pitch. To Troost-Ekong, leadership was never about being the loudest voice in the room. It was about helping others perform at their best. “It kind of forced me to be my best version,” he reflects. The conversation itself offers a glimpse into that mindset. Whether discussing Morocco’s historic World Cup run, the pressures of elite sport or the future of African football, Troost-Ekong engages thoughtfully with every topic. “THE BIGGEST THING FOR ME IS BEING OPEN MINDED AND THINKING BIGGER THAN YOURSELF.” That quality becomes especially evident when discussing the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Today, the tournament is remembered as one of the finest chapters of his international career. What many people don’t know is how close it came to never happening. Before the competition, Troost-Ekong had seriously considered stepping away from international football. Frustrations had built up. Relationships had become strained. Like many elite athletes, he found himself wrestling with doubt as well as expectation. “I think I was maybe a bit too stubborn,” he admits. Instead of walking away, he stayed. It proved to be one of the most important decisions of his career. Nigeria reached the final. Troost-Ekong was named Player of the Tournament. His performances elevated him into a new category of leadership and recognition. Yet even that achievement came with hidden sacrifices. During the second group game, he tore his hamstring. Most players would have stopped. He continued.
By the end of the tournament, surgery was required.
As a father of three, his priorities have naturally evolved.
“I didn’t want to stop,” he says. “Everything was working out so perfectly.”
“The biggest thing for me is being open minded and thinking bigger than yourself,” he says. “Now I think I’m very much less focused on the things that I want to do, but trying to understand more how I can have a bigger impact.”
Fans often see trophies, statistics and headlines. What they do not always see are the injuries, doubts and difficult decisions that exist behind them. One of the most revealing moments of our conversation arrives when he recalls losing the final to Ivory Coast. Instead of dwelling on his own disappointment, he talks about Sébastien Haller. After overcoming cancer and returning to football, Haller scored the winning goal for the host nation. Watching the celebrations unfold, Troost-Ekong found himself recognising something bigger than personal heartbreak. For Haller, the moment represented a story of survival, resilience and redemption.
The statement surfaces repeatedly throughout our conversation. It appears when discussing leadership. It appears when discussing sustainability. It appears when discussing business. And it appears when discussing the future of African football. Troost-Ekong remains optimistic about what lies ahead for the continent. Morocco’s historic World Cup run demonstrated what is possible. More African nations are competing on the biggest stage. Talent continues to emerge at an extraordinary rate. Yet he believes sustainable success requires stronger foundations.
“That is his version of the story,” he says.
Better structures. Better leagues. Better opportunities for future generations.
It is a perspective that feels increasingly rare in elite sport and perhaps explains why so many of his answers return to the same theme: impact.
“It’s only a matter of time before we see another Ballon d’Or winner again or an African team win the World Cup,” he says.

His belief is not rooted in blind optimism. It comes from seeing the progress firsthand. That same forward thinking has influenced the next phase of his career. This summer, he finds himself preparing for the World Cup from a different perspective. Not as a player. As a broadcaster. His television work began earlier this year after moving to Qatar, where he was introduced to opportunities with beIN Sports. While he had appeared in media roles throughout his career, this marked his first experience analysing matches over an extended period. What excites him most is not simply being part of the spectacle. It is learning something new. “I’ve got some big names that are part of the team, which will be nice as well,” he says. “I’m sure I’m going to learn a lot.” His approach to broadcasting mirrors his approach to leadership. Thoughtful. Measured. Human. He understands better than most the pressure players face because he is still living it himself. “I’d never want to be someone to just say stuff to catch a headline or create some clickbait,” he says. Instead, he believes analysis should provide insight without unnecessarily tearing people down. Football, he argues, is a game of mistakes. For something good to happen, something else often has to go wrong. The role of a commentator is not simply to criticise. It is to explain. Yet broadcasting is only one part of what comes next. The same curiosity that led him into television has also taken him into business. Whether through his involvement with sustainable football boot brand Sokito or his investment and ambassadorial role with FC88, Troost-Ekong is increasingly drawn towards projects that combine innovation, purpose and long term impact. The partnership with FC88 feels particularly personal. The company specialises in transforming used sporting materials into entirely new products, giving shirts, flags and memorabilia a second life rather than allowing them to go to waste.
One of their first creations for him was a hero piece made from Nigeria shirts he had worn throughout his international career.
For years, older players told him to start preparing for life after football. Like many young athletes, he never fully believed the advice applied to him.
Each shirt represented a different chapter. A different memory. A different version of himself.
Now he understands exactly what they meant.
Rather than preserving those moments behind glass, the project transformed them into something new.
One injury can change everything. One unexpected turn can alter a career. That reality no longer scares him. In fact, it motivates him.
The symbolism is difficult to ignore. Progress does not require abandoning the past. It requires building upon it.
“I feel a lot less scared about the end of my football career,” he says. “And actually more excited.”
Even his attitude towards fashion reflects a similar evolution.
Perhaps that is because he has discovered something many people spend years trying to learn. Success is not a destination.
Laughing at the memory of his younger self trying to keep up with trends, he admits his relationship with style has changed over the years. Today, he is far more interested in quality, longevity and pieces that carry meaning than chasing whatever happens to be fashionable in the moment. Like many things in his life, it has become less about consumption and more about intention. The same principle applies to his future.

People see the footballer every week, but who is Andrew away from the pitch? “I’m pretty grounded. I don’t need to be the loudest person in the room, and I don’t think strong character has to be loud. For me, it’s about how you carry yourself, keeping your word, being dependable and standing by the people around you.” What’s something people misunderstand about you? “On the pitch, I’m extremely competitive and intense because that’s the nature of the sport. Off it, I’m actually very laid-back. I think people are sometimes surprised by how relaxed and easygoing I am once the boots come off.” What does a perfect day off look like? “Honestly, just relaxing with my close friends, going out for food and watching sport. Good energy helps me reset mentally.” What kind of environments make you feel most grounded? “Anywhere I can just be myself. Being around my closest friends, there’s no pressure or expectations. Those simple moments remind me of what’s really important.” Has your personality changed since becoming a professional footballer? “I’d say football has matured me more than it’s changed me. I was growing into adulthood while becoming a professional, and football helped shape that. It’s made me more disciplined, more patient and more appreciative of the hard work that goes into achieving something.”

FOOTBALL JOURNEY “Earning something through struggle always feels better than having it handed to you.” When did football stop feeling like a hobby and start feeling real? “Around the age of 15. I started seeing some of my peers going on trials and getting selected for DDSL teams and national tournaments. That lit a fire in me because I wanted to be on those teams too. That’s when it became real.” Was there a specific moment when you thought, “I can actually make it”? “Not really. I was always focused on the next goal in front of me, whether that was making the county team or earning opportunities to play in national tournaments. I never really looked too far ahead.”
What separates the players who make it from the ones who don’t? “There are a lot of people with the talent to become professional footballers. The difference is the small percentages every day. Whether it’s extra work, making sacrifices at a young age or staying consistent, those little things add up. And, of course, a bit of luck helps too.” How has adversity shaped you? “Adversity made me. Earning something through struggle always feels better than having it handed to you. At the end of the day, I’m Irishborn and raised, so it’s in my blood to fight for what I want and stay resilient.” What’s one part of your game that’s still underrated? “The importance of set-pieces. I think people are only now starting to appreciate how decisive they can be, both offensively and defensively.”

MENTALITY Football moves fast — praise one week, criticism the next. How do you protect your mindset? “You have to be strong in your selfbelief, almost impenetrable. Football is an opinion-driven game. Having a good support system helps, and understanding that the opinions that matter most are your manager’s and your teammates’.” What motivates you more: proving people wrong or proving yourself right? “Proving people wrong. I’ve always believed in myself, so it’s never really been about proving myself right. If I stay focused and consistent in my work, everything else usually takes care of itself.” How do you deal with pressure before big matches? “I remind myself that these are the games I dreamed of playing in. Being grateful for the position I’m in helps me enjoy the occasion rather than fear it.” Have you had to become mentally tougher in the public eye? “Definitely. You learn quickly that everyone is entitled to an opinion. One week people are praising you, the next they’re criticising you. I’ve learned not to let either define me. That’s a lesson for life as much as football. You have to keep your perspective, trust yourself and never let outside opinions dim your light.” What keeps you disciplined when nobody’s watching? “The hunger to achieve my goals, and knowing it’s those small percentages every day that will either get me over the line or leave me short.”

I have both Irish and Nigerian heritage, and both have played a huge role in shaping who I am. It’s important to recognise and embrace both sides.” Do you think football is becoming more culturally expressive? “Definitely. Football is much more expressive now than when I was younger, and I think that’s a really positive thing. It’s moving in the right direction.” What does representation mean to you? “Representation is everything. You never realise how much of an impact you can have on someone else’s life. Early in my career, there were players I looked up to who made me believe certain things were possible. If I can be that person for somebody else, that’s something I’m proud of.”

NEVER LOSE YOUR ESSENCE From afternoons playing football with his brother in the living room in Quibdó to representing Colombia on the biggest stage, Jhon Arias’ journey has demanded sacrifice, belief and an unwavering sense of purpose. Leaving home at just sixteen forced Arias to grow up quickly. What followed was a journey through Colombian and Brazilian football that would eventually take him to continental glory and the international stage.
But beneath the achievements is a player who speaks less about status than he does about family, faith and the values instilled in him long before professional football arrived. For Ball, Arias reflects on where it all began, the people who made his journey possible, the coach who changed the way he sees football, his relationship with God and why, regardless of how far the game takes him, he never wants to lose the boy who simply loved playing it.

WHERE IT STARTED
What was the moment that changed everything for you? “I think one of the most defining moments of both my career and my life was leaving my hometown, Quibdó, and moving to Cali. I was very young, only sixteen, and it was my first experience away from home and my family, in an environment completely different from anything I had known before.” “It forced me to grow up and mature in a very short space of time. It also helped me understand myself better, both as a person and as a player. It made me work even harder and realise that football was the great passion in my life, something for which I was willing to make those kinds of sacrifices.” What does football look like in your earliest memories? “My childhood memories of football are closely tied to afternoons at home, playing with my brother in the living room. I also remember spending weekends at football academies. Those were places where I had a great time and was constantly learning.” What did growing up in Quibdó give you that you still carry today? “I believe my upbringing laid the foundations for the person I am today: someone with strong values, a clear sense of purpose and a strong character.” “I was taught that doing things properly, respecting others and always being honest will ultimately bring rewards. Without question, the principles instilled in me at home helped shape both the person and the player I have become.”

Who made the sacrifices that allowed your dream to become a reality? “I think the greatest sacrifices have been made by the people in my family: my parents, my aunt Mercedes, my grandmother Concepción and, today, my wife and daughter.” “They are the pillars of my life, and they have often had to make significant sacrifices so that I could pursue my dreams and achieve my goals.” Which values from home have never left you? “Honesty, responsibility and a genuine love for what you do are values that were instilled in me at home from an early age. I believe they are principles that will remain with me throughout my life.”
FAMILY, FAITH & SACRIFICE Faith is clearly an important part of who you are. When did that relationship begin? “I came to know Jesus when I was sixteen, and the impact on my life has been truly significant. From that moment onwards, my life changed in every respect.” “I believe it is essential to have a clear direction, and Jesus is at the centre of my life. He is the one who has guided me to where I am today, and He deserves all the glory and honour.” “Whenever I have the opportunity, I try to express my faith and speak about Jesus so that more people can come to know His inexhaustible love, a love that never changes and always remains. I firmly believe that all things happen through Him and for Him.”

What did it teach you about football? “Brazil is a place where football is lived in a different way; it has an entirely different dimension. It is a country that teaches you to appreciate the true essence of the game and to understand how football can become not just a sport, but a way of life.” “Living in Brazil has helped me enormously. It has allowed me to see football from a completely different perspective and given me the opportunity to keep learning and improving in an environment of exceptional quality.” As you’ve matured tactically, how have you protected the freedom and instinct in your game? “It is something I have developed over time. Experience has brought me greater maturity and helped me become more disciplined and tactically aware.” “At the same time, I never want to lose my essence, the way I feel about football or what I want people to see when they watch me play.” “It has been about finding a balance between the maturity I have gained over the years and preserving the natural qualities that have always been part of who I am.”
