America’s Move to Raise a Healthier Generation of Kids Everyone has a role to play in reducing childhood obesity. Our involvement is key to ensuring a healthy future for our children. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc, Kappa Omega Omega Chapter has taken the initiative of this challenge that First Lady Michelle Obama has set before us to reduce childhood obesity. Let’s Move! is a comprehensive initiative, by the First Lady, dedicated to solving the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation, so that children born today will grow up healthy and able to pursue their dreams.

Over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled, and today, nearly one out of three children are overweight or obese in America. The numbers are even higher in African American and Hispanic communities, where nearly 40 % of the children are overweight or obese. If we don’t solve this problem, one third of all children born during year 2000 or later will suffer from diabetes at some point in their lives. Many others will face chronic obesity-related health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer and asthma. The Let’s Move! initiative has established a variety of programs across the country. The 2012 Miss Fashionetta Scholarship Pageant Participants rose to the Let’s Move! challenge! They competitively encouraged each other, friends and their families to move and make healthy choices towards: Healthy Eating Physical Activity Consumer Awareness Better Health Awareness/Health-Conscious Decisions Spreading the Let’s Move! Message throughout City of Bakersfield, CA Let’s Move! directs children and families on the path to a healthy future. Let’s Move! also equips individuals by giving helpful information and fostering environments that support healthy choices.

Greetings from Our Chapter President: It is an honor and a pleasure to welcome you to the 19th annual Miss Fashionetta extravaganza. Our theme for the 2012 Scholarship Pageant is "Shining Pearls of Excellence and Elegance." The young ladies, families and sorority members have worked hard over the last 5 months to bring to you the culminating event that showcases the community's best of the best. Just as a beautiful pearl is one of the most valuable gems, so are our lovely young ladies who are prized for their intelligence, great spirits, loving and willing attitudes and elegance among others. Throughout the program, they have attended self esteem and etiquette workshops, sessions on college admissions, career exploration and job expectations. The students have attended worship services and have participated in community service activities. As a result of their total involvement and dedication to the program goals and objectives, Miss Fashionetta young ladies are ready to meet the challenges that await them. This year, Mr. Beautillion participants are back in the mix. The participants are organized by the local chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. We are excited to see the young men in the program as they bring their flair and swag to the event. Little Miss Ivy Angels and Mr. Debonairs will again grace the stage with their confidence and charm. The ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Kappa Omega Omega, Bakersfield, are excited about developing a program that focuses on education and scholarship and one that encourages excellence at all levels. Through the program, the high school participants will earn scholarship monies for college and will receive invaluable experiences that will help them to grow and succeed. Special thanks to my husband, Robert Reader, for serving as one of the Miss Fashionetta photographers and for encouraging me throughout the program. Special thanks to the sisters of Alpha Kappa Alpha for your dedication to our youth. Special thanks, also, to our parents who brought their children to us, and to the community for continuing to support us as we work to maximize the achievements of our students. Greetings from the General Chair of Miss Fashionetta 2012 It is my pleasure to bring you greetings from the Miss Fashionetta 2012 Steering committee. The Ladies of Kappa Omega Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc are pleased to present to you eight wonderful, bright, energetic, intelligent and beautiful High School young ladies who are the representatives of our 19th scholarship pageant Miss Fashionetta…a trademark program of our sorority and a tradition in our local community over the last three decades. Over the last six months, these young ladies have worked very hard and they have truly lived up to our theme, Shining Pearls of Excellence and Elegance. First, I want to thank each of them for their commitment to the rigors and demands of our program. You only need to look at the calendar of activities included in this program and you will see that these young ladies have consistently demonstrated their commitment to this program by participating on a weekly basis in talent and dance rehearsals, attending workshops, participating in community service projects and joining us in church service each month. Ladies, it has been a long six months, but your commitment has paid off and we are grateful to you. Parents, we too are thankful to you for the role you have played in encouraging your daughters, transporting them to and from activities and participating in rehearsals and calendar events as well. These are your beautiful daughters and we thank you for blessing us by “lending them” to us for the past few months. Tonight, you the audience will have the opportunity to watch these ladies shine in Excellence and Elegance as they highlight many of their gifts and skills that they will use as our leaders of tomorrow. We thank you for supporting them by attending tonight and purchasing tickets and ads from them to help them meet their scholarship goals. In addition, we will once again present our Little Ivy Angel and Mr. Debonair participants. These “little ones” between the ages of 4 and 8 will entertain you with their praise dance and their introductions. Thank you to each of their parents and grandparents. This year, the Ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc have partnered with the Men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity for a special presentation during our annual program. Tonight, you will be pleased to meet the handsome and intelligent High School Young Men who are members of the Mr. Beautillion Program. To my husband, Ronnie Mitchell, I am thankful for his support throughout the program. He never complained as I left the house almost two evenings of every week for rehearsals, in addition to the numerous weekend events. In fact, he often supported me by attending and helping me prepare for many of the events. Thank you so much for your encouragement and I love you for always being there for me. My thanks also goes out to all of my children and family, especially my daughter Kamilah, Miss Fashionetta 2005. She has accompanied me and helped me prepare for rehearsals and events, encouraged me when I was tired, and all the while being patient with me in assisting her as she prepares for graduate school. Thank you to the rest of my family who have put their “ life issues’ on hold to allow me to complete chairmanship of this program. Finally, thank you to the Ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Kappa Omega Omega Chapter for their demonstrated dedication to this great event. It could not have been a success without their commitment of their time, energy, finances and support. May we, with your prayers and support of course, continue to Serve Mankind in Our Community.

MISTRESS AND MASTER OF CEREMONIES MS. JAIMI BANKS AND MR. ALPHA NESBITT Jaimi Banks is a Bakersfield native. As a junior at South High School, Jaimi participated in the 1991 presentation of Miss Fashionetta where she won 1st Runner-Up, the Basileus Award and Grand Talent. A tremendous singer, Jaimi started singing at the age of 4! She has had the opportunity to sing with such artists as Beverly Crawford, Donald Malloy, Daniel Johnson, Karen Clark Sheard, Byron Cage and Terrell Carter. Ms Banks earned a Bachelor of Science in Human Services from University of Phoenix and is a Social Service Worker III at Corcoran State Prison. Along with music, Jaimi loves playing softball and spending time with her family including parents James and Linda, sisters Kim and Kelly, brother-in-law Reggie and niece & nephew Kailyn and Timothy. One of her favorite scriptures is Philippians 3:13,14

Alpha Nesbitt, born and raised in Muskogee, Oklahoma, is currently the Assistant Dean at West High school in Bakersfield, California. Alpha has over 35 years experience as an educator in the Kern High School District. He has taught Social Studies, coached football and basketball, served as the Athletic Director, advisor of Project BEST and the Black Student Union. He previously taught and coached sports at McFarland and North High schools. Mr. Nesbitt was awarded a football scholarship to Langston University, Langston, Oklahoma. While in college he was active in student government and served as president of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity chapter on campus. Alpha graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Oklahoma University in Norman, Oklahoma. Mr. Nesbitt enjoys outdoor living, good food and travel. www.missfashionetta.com - 9 -
2012 M ISS F ASHIONETTA J UDGES TAMMY BROWN Tammy Brown, a Community Specialist, has been with Stockdale High School for 12 years. She has served as Black Student Union Advisor and Project Best Advisor. She believes that learning how to make the world a better place is fundamental to providing challenging, rewarding, and joyous training for a life well lived and empowers the students to achieve their personal best in mind, body, and spirit
VERONICA GREEN Veronica Green retired from Bakersfield City School District after 40 years of teaching. She currently serves as part time supervisor of student teachers for CSUB. She has been honored as Distinguished Teacher in Residency for Bakersfield City School District and Teacher of the Year at Munsey School. Mrs. Green is an accomplished vocalist and displays her talents regularly as a member of the Mt Zion Missionary Baptist Church Choir.
LEO HOLLAND Leo Holland currently serves as South High School Dean of Students for the Kern High School District. While residing in Sacramento, he received the Sacramento Mayor’s Commendation for Outstanding Police Work for Project Hope (Homeless Outreach). Prior to his current assignment as KHSD, he received the National Forensics League Top 100 Award for East Bakersfield High School Forensics.
JOSEPH JOHNSON Joseph Johnson works as a Community Organizer for Faith in Action in Kern County. He is also a business instructor at San Joaquin Valley College. He often heard as a volunteer radio personality for “The Old Ship of Zion” radio show sponsored by the Bakersfield Singers Association. He is a co-founder of “We Are Game” (Getting Athletes Mentored and Educated).
ALLISON PERKINS-THOMAS Allison Perkins-Thomas was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. She is visible throughout the area as she performs her job for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Central Valley Council for Bakersfield and Kern County. From God’s own treasure, we are blessed to present graceful elegance that exudes special subtlety as precious pearls… Faithful & dedicated, Diane McGee-Powell has once again shared her God-given talent of choreography and youthful inspiration with the Miss Fashionetta Participants, Parents, and our surrounding Kern County Community! The stunning showcase of choreography presented tonight is the direct result of over 20 years of her compassion and focus for Kern County’s youth and her interest in their attainment of higher education. Diane’s inspiration began as a young lady wishing to offer youth an activity where they can have fun, and stay out of trouble. She developed her first drill squad, named “The Derbannettes” in Bakersfield, CA over 3 decades ago. She continues to provide drill instruction for St. Peter RCCM’s Usher Board, and developed the creative project, “Birds of Spirits”, which was a local pageant. Born and raised in Bakersfield, Ca, Diane continues to stay committed to youth through various educational efforts as well. She currently serves in various leadership, truancy, and choreography capacities. She is a graduate of the 1972 class (Bakersfield College) and the 1978 class of California State University, Bakersfield. Fiercely dedicated to her sorority, Sigma Gamma Rho, Diane is also currently employed as the Community Counselor/Security Officer at West High School since 1978. Diane serves on various boards which include Wendell Davis Foundation Board (Activities Director), West High School Rally Club Advisor (Originator), The West High Chapter of MECHA (Advisor for 7 years), as well as the “STAY FOCUSED MINISTRY”, which she serves to assist in security setup for local Christmas Toy Drives. Diane’s love of Kern County’s youth and her will to provide a constructive, positive outlet in the form of drill and dance drive her commitment across the decades! We Love You, Diane, and are grateful that you wish to shower and share your splendid gift!!
Lula Stewart 2012 Little Miss Ivy Angels and Mr. Debonair Choreographer What makes pearls shine? A little bit of time, patience and prodding, handling each with extra care. Over time, the pearls emerge … shining and capturing our senses with captivating strength matched only by their brilliance… Some are aptly equipped to handle and nurture such precious gems. Lula Stewart, member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Kappa Omega Omega Chapter of Bakersfield, CA is truly gifted in her talents of nurturing shining pearls of excellence & elegance. Lula is a Minister and member of Compassion Christian Center where she is the head of the dance ministry. She also serves as a Primary School Age Educator for the past 12 years. Ms. Stewart continues to provide her special gift of praise dance instruction and choreography for the Little Miss Ivy Angel and Mr. Debonair Presentation for the showcase event of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.—MISS FASHIONETTA SCHOLARSHIP PAGEANT.
