Solutions to problems in the community are found by working together. In 2014, Bakersfield Ivy Legacy Foundation (BILF) was birthed from the need to work together. We work directly with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Kappa Omega Omega Chapter (AKA) to increase funding for program activities.
From the President
Our first big program of 2018-2019 was the 2nd Annual Project Next Step Conference on the campus of California State University, Bakersfield. Over 381 student pre-registered; with 163 students and parents attending. We met our goal of sharing resources to ensure student success with those attending. Students and parents are confident they have a greater chance for academic achievement this school year. Students in 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grades were engaged. BCSD even brought middle school students to take part. We are excited to continue working with AKA, Kern High School District, California State University, Bakersfield, Bakersfield College, Kern Community Foundation other academic institutions and community organizations to increase attendance & resources available at next year’s conference. It was truly a blessing to give over $6,800 in scholarships at the 40th Annual African American Graduation Awards. This amount is a whooping 70% increase from last year’s giving. This is all because of increased giving from the community! We enjoyed several opportunities of increased visibility in the community as we participated for the second year in Give Big Kern! We also participated in Giving Tuesday for the very first time. The highlight of the year surely was being nominated for a 2019 Beautiful Bakersfield Award. We were nominated in the category of education for our work with high school students. The Crystal Camila eluded us this time, but the recognition inspires us to keep up our efforts - and increase them! We are excited and continue working together with AKA to increase educational and leadership development in Kern County next year and beyond!
