Solutions to problems in the community are found by working together. In 2014, Bakersfield Ivy Legacy Foundation (BILF) was birthed from the need to work together. We work closely with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Kappa Omega Omega Chapter (AKA) to increase funding for education, health awareness, financial literacy, fine arts, and global impact programs. For 2020-2021, our proposed 4th annual Project Next Step Conference was delayed to due to COVID restrictions. With Project Next Step, we seek to help students better connect with school personnel and experience higher levels of academic engagement, which is imperative to the students’ long-term success. We hope to return with a very essential conference next year!
From the President
It was truly a blessing to give over $20,000 in scholarships at the 42nd Annual African American Graduation Awards. This amount is an increase from last year’s giving. This is all because of increased giving from the community, which included $6,855 in Memorial Scholarships! We enjoyed several opportunities of increased visibility in the community as we participated for the 4th year in Give Big Kern, April 4 - May 4, 2021! Particular thanks to Kern Community Foundation and Bakersfield Observer for coverage of our programs during this giving campaign. Media coverage and peer-to-peer fundraising made this our best GBK showing yet with a whooping $6,955 from over 100 donors! We are over the moon grateful and charged up to continue our programs with these funds. We had a record-breaking #GivingTuesday - our goal was $500 yet we received more than $2,600 in donations. We get it – you appreciate the work we do – we will continue!! Further expanding the community’s ability to connect with us and learn more about our key programs we have increased the content on our YouTube channel. We look to share more over the next two years, while increasing subscribers. The Board is excited for future and is confident in the Foundation’s ability to provide solutions for the community. We also look forward to continue working with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority to increase educational and leadership development in Kern County next year and beyond! Raquell Jones, President

Program Highlight:
Annual African American Graduation Awards The 2021 program was The 42nd Annual celebration. Themed “Extra Ordinary Achievements of Academic Excellence,” it was held virtually on May 22, 2021, due to the unprecedented global COVID-19 pandemic. Despite being unable to meet in person to recognize African American middle and high school student achievement, we partnered with the local chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, community organizations, and generous individual donors to celebrate the academic greatness of Kern County youth virtually via www.gradawards.org. The online program has been viewed more than 180 times. Twenty-seven high school students, with grade point averages between 3.549 and 4.5 were awarded over $13,300. Individual Community Donors donated and additional $6,855 for scholarships to us and 100% of those funds were awarded to eight students. Over 200 honor roll students from 23 middle schools received certificates of achievement. 8
