Kangaroo Island sits a short crossing from the South Australian coast and rewards the journey immediately. More than a third of Australia's third-largest island is protected as national park or conservation sanctuary, and the wildlife reflects it: fur seals, sea lions, koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas and ospreys moving freely through landscapes that have never been tamed. The island's reputation as a zoo without fences understates the case.
Southern Ocean Lodge sits above Hanson Bay on the south-west coast, the natural base for exploring the island's finest natural landscapes. Signature experiences venture out with knowledgeable naturalists in small groups, offering an encounter with Australia's Galapagos that is as intimate as it is unforgettable.
Kangaroo Island rewards a visit in any season. Warm summers invite long afternoons on empty beaches and cool ocean swims, while temperate winters bring the island's wildlife to its most active. Daytime temperatures range from 25-35°C in summer to 14-18°C in winter. The Southern Ocean is never far away, and never the same twice.
Kangaroo Island sits just 15 kilometres off the South Australian coast. QantasLink operates 40-minute flights between Adelaide and Kingscote Airport on most days, with Southern Ocean Lodge just 50 minutes from the terminal. Complimentary shared transfers meet scheduled flights, or a hire car is available at Kingscote for those who prefer to explore at their own pace. SeaLink operates regular ferry crossings from the mainland to Penneshaw, approximately 90 minutes from the lodge by road.
The dress code at Southern Ocean Lodge reflects the easy Australian spirit of the place: smart casual throughout, relaxed at dinner, no jacket required. Comfortable walking shoes and a weatherproof jacket will serve well across all seasons, with an extra warm layer worth packing in the cooler months. A hat and sunscreen belong in every bag, every day.
