Driving on Kangaroo Island
With twenty-one national and conservation parks, Kangaroo Island is widely known as ‘Australia’s Galapagos’. As such, watch for wildlife on the road as the island comes alive at all hours! You may come across farm machinery, trucks, and even sheep and cattle being moved on many of the unsealed, island roads. In short, expect the unexpected driving around Australia's dynamic, third largest island.
Please Note
• Fill up with petrol before 5pm and ensure you have a generous supply before arrival.
• For electric vehicles, e-charging stations can be utilised on-site at the lodge carpark during daylight hours.
From Penneshaw Ferry Terminal
• Drive up the hill from the ferry terminal and along the coast to the right.
• Stay on the Hog Bay Road, passing both the Pelican Lagoon on your right and the turn off to American River. Continue until you reach a “T” junction, intersecting with Elsegood Road.
• At this point turn right and almost immediately left onto Arranmore Road.
• After 4 km the Kangaroo Island Airport is on your left.
• Follow directions from Kangaroo Island Airport. Travel
From Kangaroo Island Airport
• Drive out of the airport and turn left onto Arranmore Road. Less than 1 km down the road you will come to a 'T' junction – turn left.
• The Playford Highway becomes Birchmore Road and then South Coast Road.
• After 44 km you will come to Vivonne Bay where there is a general store on the left.
• Continue heading west for another 30 km, reaching Hanson Bay Road on the left – there is a blue 'Southern Ocean Lodge' sign on the street post. The road to this point has been a high standard, sealed road. Hanson Bay Road is unsealed and can be corrugated and dusty.
• After 3.5 km the main entrance gate to Southern Ocean Lodge will be obvious on the right.
• Simply press the intercom button and you will be connected to reception for entry.
• Drive a short 3 km through the coastal bush to Southern Ocean Lodge.
