Self Guided Walks Return to Lodge via Clifftop Walk or continue via Clifftop Circuit
Remarkable Rocks to Southern Ocean Lodge Distance: 13km Grade: Experienced Duration: 4.5 hours
Encounter massive swells, towering cliffs and sweeping views along the coast all the way from the Remarkable Rocks to Cape Younghusband. Sanderson Bay is an ideal lunch stop, often shared with a pod of dolphins playing offshore. Turning inland, the vegetation changes dramatically from low coastal heath to mallee scrub, providing habitat for an array of wildlife. At the rock marker, step off the Wilderness Trail and return to the lodge along the spectacular Clifftop Walk.
Kelly Hill to Southern Ocean Lodge Distance: 12km Grade: Moderate Duration: 4 hours
Explore the backcountry of Kelly Hill Conservation Park passing through eucalypt woodlands and grazing pastures favoured by the island’s namesake then glassy lagoons and wetlands rich with birdlife. Emerge onto the white sands of Hanson Bay Beach where the aqua clear waters invite a swim. Continue past the Hanson Bay Cabins and along the rock ledge – the Southern Ocean frothing below – and when it comes into view, relish the reward of the lodge beyond.
Cape Younghusband Circuit Distance: 9km Grade: Moderate Duration: 3 hours
Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail
Head off from the Lodge via bushland joining the KI Wilderness Trail, turning left and heading west. Experience the wonder of sheer limestone cliffs and admire the view from Cape Younghusband to Remarkable Rocks in the distance. Retracing your steps take a right turn at the Rock Marker and return to the Lodge via the Clifftop Walk for a well earned refreshment!
From Remarkable Rocks
Southern Ocean Lodge to Hanson Bay Loop* Distance: 7km Grade: Moderate Duration: 3 hours Step out from the lodge and follow the Wilderness Trail through bushland, watching out for tammar wallabies, echidnas and birds. Cross the South West River using the boat tethered there and once ashore, climb over the sand dune to reveal the protected coves of Hanson Bay Beach – perfect for a cooling dip! Continue west past the Hanson Bay Cabins, following the coastal rock-shelf before the sandy home-stretch leads back to the lodge. *This trail offers the option to cross the South West River using a simply operated boat. It’s important to check river conditions prior to crossing. If the river appears to be fast flowing, it is recommended the crossing is undertaken by foot at a shallower section of the river further downstream. To reach this section of the river, follow Hanson Bay Road south to Hanson Bay.

Hanson Bay Beach Distance: 4km Grade: Easier Duration: 1.5 hours
Wander down the lodge’s raised boardwalk and onto the windswept beach below, at the end of the beach rise up along the rugged shoreline picking your path past sea caves and an often crashing ocean. Continue around the headland, respecting the privacy of our neighbours at Hanson Bay Cabins until arriving at the pristine cove of Hanson Bay Beach. Dip optional!
End Cape Younghusband Circuit
Clifftop Walk Distance: 2km Grade: Easy Duration: 1 hour
Step out from the lodge venturing along the limestone cliffs. This easy walk affords a bird’s eye view of the waves crashing below, often you can spot marine life such as dolphins or seals – keep an eye out for a majestic osprey gliding above. If you feel like an extra workout, stride on the marked trail inland and follow the signs back to the Lodge via the coastal bushland of the Clifftop Circuit Distance: 4km Duration: 1.5 hours

Note: Bikes are not permitted on any walking trails • Lodge to Hanson Bay Beach via driveway – 8km • Driveway to South Coast Road (option to follow the fire trail parallel to Hanson Bay Road) – 14km • Lodge to Kelly Hill Caves – 23km • Lodge to Flinders Chase Visitors Centre (opening 2024) via Hanson Bay Road and South Coast Road – 26km
