Is there light at the end of the tunnel?

Dear fellow industry member.

Let me start by wishing you all a Happy New Year - I hope you are well and ready to push on in 2026!

There is a saying ‘think smart’ and I think this phrase is very important to be in business at these times. There still appears to be a lack of economic certainty, although the government have signalled a partial easing of the inheritance tax pains for farmers and property owners – some positive news to receive just before Christmas. Is this an indication that there may be light at the end of the tunnel?

While uncertainty prevails, we must all continue to work together and be a strong voice for the government to listen to.

BAGMA MEMBERS RECOGNISED AT SERVICE DEALER AWARDS

BAGMA would like to extend their congratulations to members Major Owen Ltd, Turney Group and Stuart Taylor International for their outstanding achievements at the Service Dealer Awards held in early December. Major Owen Ltd who impressively secured three category wins last year continued their success, being crowned the 2025 ‘Professional Turfcare Dealer of the Year’ and reaching the finalist stage in four additional categories.

It’s fantastic to see BAGMA Members receiving well-deserved recognition for their hard work, dedication and excellence within the industry.

Nick reflects on the retirement of industry ‘stalwart’ David Withers

Iwas fortunate to first meet David back in the 80’s when I started work at Charterhouse Turf Machinery, where he was already established in the business. David was always keen to help and encourage, unknowingly playing a huge role in the development of my career.

When he left the business, I stepped into the role of Sales Demonstrator which was made much easier knowing that Mr

Withers was always at the end of the phone if I needed advice or guidance.

I watched David go from strength to strength in his respective roles at Ransomes, Jacobsen and ISEKI – no matter the scale of the task at hand, he had a habit of making it look effortless. Undoubtedly his strength lays in his ‘human’, relaxed and simple approach, cutting through some of the stuffiness that had surrounded the industry from those that had gone before him.

David’s work with the AEA and BAGMA has also been exceptional – showing care for the dealer network in both his role as AEA President and his unwavering support of BAGMA over the years. So, from me, thank you David. I fully expect to see the golf handicap come down in the not-too-distant future!

New Year, New BAGMA Industry Partner!

BAGMA are pleased to announce that Cramer, a leading innovator in professional battery powered equipment, have joined the association as the latest in a prestigious list of Industry Partners.

Cramer has built a reputation for delivering durable, high-performance tools designed specifically for commercial and professional users.

As the UK dealer landscape evolves, Cramer’s focus is on supporting servicing dealers with reliable, long-lasting products. The shift from petrol products to 100% battery is gaining even more pace and Cramer want to support the dealer network through that. As an agile company, they pride themselves

on supporting the dealer network and building strong, long-lasting relationships.

The company’s battery platform, heavy-duty construction standards and expanding range of commercial tools provide dealers with a compelling alternative to traditional engine-powered equipment, without compromising on power or productivity.

Cramer looks forward to working closely with BAGMA members and contributing to a stronger, more sustainable future for the industry.

Two new Service Providers join BAGMA’s Portfolio of Partners

BAGMA has started the year on a strong note, expanding its list of approved partners to more than 15. Each partner offers BAGMA members exclusive support, discounts and specialised services.

Among the newest Service Providers is Brown & Brown, specialists in employee benefits programmes and insurance solutions that prioritise employee health, wellbeing and overall workplace satisfaction.

Betts Woods, an Employee Benefits Consultant from Brown & Brown said, “We are delighted to announce a new partnership between Brown & Brown Health & Employee Benefits and BAGMA. A second valuable partnership has been formed with Ascendant, experts in international payments. The Ascendant team will support BAGMA Members by helping them save time and reduce costs on international payments.

“Our work with agri and groundscare businesses has shown us the value of collaboration, so this partnership with BAGMA is a great way to strengthen that connection across the industry” explains Stuart Bidwell, Partner Consultant from Ascendant.

With these newly established partnerships, BAGMA hopes to be able to offer Members even greater value

QUALITY DIESEL MOWER OFFERING

Here to help you in 2026...

And just like that, the festivities are over and we welcome in 2026. I hope you all had a restful break and are suitably re-charged for the year ahead.

2025 was well-documented for its numerous challenges – if it wasn’t the weather, it was curveballs coming in left, right and centre from the political and economical situations both here and further afield. While I would love to say 2026 will be better, it is difficult to see any drastic changes that will make the life of dealerships any easier, certainly in the short to mid-term.

As ever, BAGMA are here to support you whatever the year has in store. We are proud to work with a fantastic range of Service Providers, providing help and advice on a range of topics from HR to security, and exclusive savings on utilities, insurance and more. We’re pleased to be adding to that list, as we announce our partnership with Brown & Brown and Ascendant.

We’re looking forward to a busy year ahead, with three more Connect meetings – kicking off at TORO U.K. Limited in March. In addition, we’ve been working hard to enhance our range of industry training. You’ll have the chance to read about the first EV Training day, along with brand new courses available in BAGMA’s Training for Business programme, on pages 8 and 9.

On the back of the fully-booked Handover & Installation events last year, we are also pleased to announce 13 dates throughout 2026 which are ideal for individuals or small groups. Details of the available dates, hosted by Devon Garden Machinery and Kubota UK, can be found on the BAGMA website.

Finally, I’d like to extend my thanks to Howard Pullen – who has been a long serving member of the BAGMA Council and after years of great passion and enthusiasm has stepped down from his seat.

Wishing you well for the season ahead.

industries can enrol on our courses, with a discount available to BAGMA member companies. Our courses are recognised by the Institution of Agricultural Engineers for CPD hours, which will be of benefit to many of your employees who will be IAgrE members.

For more information or to book your place on any of the courses listed, please contact Kari Hearn on info@bagma.com

This course is designed to provide delegates with the essential skills required to plan, prepare and deliver effective presentations to customers, engineers, dealer staff, customers and members of the public. Taking a highly practical approach throughout the course, each participant will have the opportunity to plan and deliver at least 2 presentations, receive constructive feedback, improve their skillset and increase their confidence in presenting product, technical, business or brand information. Video recording and review will be available.

This course is designed to provide delegates with the knowledge, skills and confidence to build effective relationships with dealership owners, managers and staff in sales and aftersales. Whether agreeing business plans, managing dealership development, negotiating changes, or simply providing effective support to dealer teams, this programme will help delegates build productive and performance-oriented relationships with their dealership contacts.

Delegates will learn how to develop strategies to determine dealer effectiveness and market coverage and identify areas when replacements or new appointments are required. They will understand techniques to research the chosen territory looking for potential candidates and negotiating franchise agreements. They will also discuss and review techniques for ensuring maximum representation even if they are not the dealer’s main franchise. In addition, they will review key strategies to successfully achieve maximum sales potential as quickly as possible, as well as analysing the impacts of these actions in the trading territory.

Delegates will learn how to work with dealership financial indicators in enough detail to develop an awareness of trading performance, liquidity, solvency and balance sheet strength. This is an important and often overlooked factor of many roles within manufacturers, where an understanding of dealership performance and financial viability is an important aspect the role. Using a set of 3 case studies, delegates will work together to draw conclusions about dealership performance, viability and potential challenges, following which they will identify and present their recommended actions to address any concerns or risks identified in the case studies.

BAGMA’s inaugural EV Training Day

Recently I was privileged to be involved in the first delivery of BAGMA’s new Off Highway Electric Vehicle (OHEV) and Electric Outdoor Power Equipment (EOPE) course.

With the advent of this ‘newer’ technology to the sector (although electric vehicles (EV) have been with us for a long time!), it is great to hear the experiences from those who are in the field doing the job on a day-to-day basis.

Hosted by Ace Plant, we were fortunate to be able to use the industry leading facilities they have at their site, which not only house training facilities, but also dedicated facilities within the working environment solely for the use and maintenance of EV.

down’ any barriers to allow an inclusive learning environment - after all I have a room full of experts with me who are there ready to share their experience.

When the word training is mentioned sometimes it can be met with an air of trepidation, and I firmly consider my job as ‘breaking

As the day progressed, and more questions began to be asked, it was evident just how much there is to learn - not just about how the technology works, but more importantly how we stay safe around such technology, which is worlds apart from the traditional combustion engine. And whilst we all have an appreciation of the principle of electric technology, previous exposure may have been to what could be considered low voltage. BAGMA’s new training course aims to demonstrate how the increased voltages we are finding within the workshops, and out in the field, will require a completely different approach.

The two days training I would consider to be a huge success! The invaluable feedback showed knowledge was gained

not only by the delegates, but also by myself. And the cherry on the cake must be that at the end of the day, delegates stayed back to give their personal thanks and praise what they were taking away from the day. That, as they say, is priceless!

The introduction of AI into our everyday working lives is one of the largest changes we’ve seen to industry in living memory. Some consider this to signal the loss of jobs, with big companies choosing tech over employing staff. Some see AI as the chance to become more efficient and others sit somewhere in the middle – “AI isn’t coming for your job, but people who understand AI are”. There is some truth to this phrase, with a need to understand how AI can help in their daily role and implement it accordingly.

SiteWizard have been helping businesses succeed online for the last 29 years whether it be through web design, SEO, Google Ads or Social Media Management. Personally, I’ve had the pleasure of working in this industry since 2005 and, in that time, there’s been a myriad of changes that businesses have needed to adapt to. In this article we’ll

Can AI boost your online presence?

explore how you can utilise AI to shape the success of your website.

Web Design

The increase in quality of AI platforms to building website or images to be used online and on social media has been incredible. However, the AI platforms such as Gemini or ChatGPT are only as creative as the person guiding it and, personally, I believe the quality has some way to go before it can beat that of an actual designer. If you want to give your customers a great online experience, employ someone with both the creative flair and technical know-how to do so.

While I’m sure I could easily convey a website vision on an AI platform, every time I’ve entrusted a creative to do it, they’ve always gone above and beyond the initial concept I had in mind.

Content

Getting the content of your website right can be tough. It’s a fine balance between wanting to be as informative as possible to get the site picked up by search and AI engines, but not so informative that you bore visitors or allow them to work out if they actually want the product or not.

When creating the content, I would always recommend using a content writer but sometimes that’s not possible. Also, many great content writers will now likely use AI platforms to help structure their content which they then make their own.

I decided to ask Google Gemini to help me write an advert for a piece of used garden machinery. It straight away came back and asked me for additional information including the make/ model, year of manufacture, hours, service history and more. Even without supplying all of the extra details, Gemini gave me a workable template which could have quickly seen the advert up and running.

Once you’ve received the copy from the AI platform, it’s important to check through it with someone within the business who is knowledgeable about the item in question and make sure you are happy to add it to the website.

If you are running an SEO campaign with a provider (even if it’s not us), make sure you run the content by them tooIt’s important to keep them in the loop with any changes that may impact your campaign. If you are running a campaign with SiteWizard, please note that if we are targeting a certain area of your business, we will produce that content within the price of your campaign.

There are so many AI tools out there at the moment, the above is merely a crumb of the treats available! If you found the above useful, we’d be more than happy to discuss how, as a BAGMA Service Provider, we can help members boost their online presence.

Understanding PCI DSS Compliance

If you’re interested in taking card payments, or do so already, you might have heard of PCI DSS compliance. But what exactly does it mean?

BAGMA Service Providers Global Payments have teamed up with their partner, takepayments, to explain.

What is PCI DSS?

It sounds important and it is! PCI DSS stands for Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards

It’s a set of standards created by card providers to make sure any business taking card payments is looking after their customers’ data safely and securely.

It covers how you store, process and transmit a cardholder’s details, as well as how you oversee your third parties, and it’s been designed to protect both you and your customers.

If you don’t meet the standards within 90 days, you could face monthly fees and risk making your customers’ details vulnerable to fraudsters and cyberattacks.

What are the different levels of PCI?

There are four different levels, but you’ll only need to focus on the one that’s relevant to your business.

• Level 1 - businesses processing over 6 million card transactions per year

• Level 2 – businesses processing 1 to 6 million card transactions per year

• Level 3 – businesses processing 20,000 to 1 million e-commerce transactions per year

• Level 4 – businesses processing less than 20,000 e-commerce transactions per year, and other merchants processing up to 1 million card transactions per year.

How do I keep my business compliant day-today?

Keeping the security of your customers’ data front of mind daily is key to staying on top of the compliance standards. Some examples of how to do this can be found below.

Protecting where your data lives is extremely important.

• Make sure you take every step to safeguard where your data is stored.

• Invest in high-quality anti-virus protection and keep it up to date. You’ll also need to review how data is accessed.

• Make sure you always create strong and unique passwords instead of using the supplier defaults.

• Keep your passwords and security information on a need-to-know basis with your staff. This goes for physical access to cardholder data too.

• Give every team member with computer access their own unique ID, so that you can track and trace everything.

If you’re looking for a card payments provider who can help you stay on top of PCI DSS compliance, get in touch with takepayments. They specialise in card payments and help thousands of businesses accept cards safely. They offer a Security+ package, which provides access to a dedicated team that handles PCI DSS compliance on your behalf and will be there to help if your business makes any changes.

BAGMA members can benefit from a range of different payment solutions - from a market-leading smart terminal to fast, secure online payments and solutions on the go.

Built to last: How RVW Pugh Group is investing for the future

In 1978, Robert and Caroline Pugh founded RVW Pugh in Churchstoke, Mid-Wales. Since then, the company has grown significantly, adding three more depots in Holmes Chapel, Newport, and Lathom. The Newport site, announced in 2021 and officially opened in 2025, is a key part of a strategic decision to split the company’s AGCO franchises. The Newport branch now operates as TR Machinery, a separate entity within the RVW Pugh Group that focuses exclusively on the Fendt franchise. To discuss this expansion and the group’s development, BAGMA spoke with Business Manager Emma Pugh and TR Machinery Sales Director Martyn Gardner.

RVW Pugh has seen significant growth over the past decade. Can you tell us more about the recent expansion, particularly the new depots in Lathom and the £1.65 million investment into the new purpose-built facility in Newport?

EP: TR Machinery obviously aided our brand separation, which then allowed us to have more focus on the two AGCO brands that we hold. We have Martyn Gardner heading up the Fendt brand from our depot here in Newport, and Andrew Purnell heading up the Massey Ferguson brand across Churchstoke and Holmes Chapel.

MG: It was necessary to have this location at Newport because of the customer base and the Fendt brand that we represent. We wanted to offer the

best support and backup to our current customers and grow. The only way to do that was to have a full-service location here.

EP: The £1.65 million investment in the purpose-built Newport facility was a crucial step to supporting Fendt customers in a key arable farming area. This depot now has a team of fourteen people, including eight service engineers and one apprentice, to provide comprehensive support. While the Newport investment was part of a long-term plan, we also capitalised on an unexpected opportunity in Lancashire. Following the unfortunate news regarding Malpas Tractors, a team of former employees approached us, leading to the establishment of the new depot in Lathom. This location is perfectly

suited to our AVR Potato Machinery and Merlo franchise.

MG: It wasn’t necessarily part of the plan, but the opportunity was one we didn’t want to miss. There was already a knowledge of the AVR equipment, and so it was great to build upon this and their knowledge of the local customers.

The Lathom team is made up of five key employees who all came from Malpas Tractors, ensuring a seamless transition and continuity of service for customers in the area.

With the brand split between RVW Pugh and TR Machinery, how has this specialisation into Fendt and Massey Ferguson improved the group’s focus and customer service?

MG: The split between TR Machinery and RVW Pugh has significantly

improved our focus and customer service; it does concentrate your mind on that one product.

EP: This strategic separation allows both Andrew and Martyn to focus on their respective product lines, Massey Ferguson at the core RVW Pugh depots and Fendt through TR Machinery.

MG: The sales team can now provide more focused expertise, but as we both believe, it’s the after-sales support that sells the next machine. After-sales is slightly different with the brand separation because Newport is mainly Fendt, but we have engineers who can work on both brands to get customers up and running, just as AGCO’s aftersales works across brands. If you’ve got a big customer nearby, then you’ve got to support them.

The overall company is the RVW Pugh Group, and we operate with the mission that every single customer receives the best after-sales service, no matter the brand. We can’t say no just because it’s a different colour. That would create a huge division, and at the end of the day, we’re all working for the same goal.

EP: If we don’t achieve that goal, it’s not just one side that suffers; it’s everything. So, it’s always got to be a team effort. This ensures that the service provided is a direct reflection of the premium brands we represent and the level of service our customers expect.

The businesses are now a group of companies. How do the RVW Pugh and TR Machinery teams work together to ensure a seamless experience for all customers?

MG: Like we previously mentioned, the aftersales team working together is key in ensuring a seamless experience. But despite the brand split, the sales team also work together well, we have a group sales chat which is always being populated, and I think that it is important to collaborate and share information.

EP: The team relies on each other’s knowledge of customers, areas and machines to find quality leads and recommend the right equipment. We also have dedicated product support specialists across the group who assist the sales team with any queries related to machinery and telematics.

The last few years have brought many changes and uncertainties for agricultural dealers and their customers. How does RVW Pugh provide stability and confidence for customers and suppliers during these volatile times?

MG: I believe our customers find stability in knowing the RVW Pugh Group is still run and owned by the Pugh family. That history is a big thing; they see where we started and where we’re going.

EP: In a very uncertain world, our customers have also seen us continue to invest and grow by opening more depots and taking on more staff. But it’s a manageable growth at a pace that we dictate. We’re here and we’re committed for the long term.

The Lathom depot, for example, was an opportunity that came up. It wasn’t something we were actively looking for, but it all looked right because there was a team, an established area and a customer base in place. It was almost too good to miss. We don’t just open a new depot without the right people, because you’re nothing without your people, and it’s a small industry.

With regards to the suppliers, they look closely at our profitability and succession planning. We’re especially proud that we’ve grown our tractor market share in 2025, even as overall registrations have fallen by at least 20%. Our succession plan isn’t just about me being a Pugh; it’s about having the right structure in place. We have strong After-Sales Managers and Sales Directors to drive the business forward, because one Pugh or even three Pugh’s can’t do it all. As I’ve said before, we are nothing without our people. You recently announced the addition of the KUHN machinery franchise to your portfolio. How important is this partnership for the customers and RVW Pugh Group?

EP: We are really excited to be partnering with KUHN across all of our depots. We were appointed officially on the 10th of September 2025, and we hit

“...it’s the after sales support that sells the next machine.”

the ground running with multiple sales going through early doors, and the phone has been busy with lots of parts orders.

MG: I do believe as a group we have needed something like this. We can now offer the entire KUHN product range across all four of our depots. As we’ve grown, this has been increasingly difficult to achieve, with some depots handling one brand and others handling another. With the KUHN appointment, we’re not hindered by area conflicts, so our entire team can go out and sell any piece of equipment, from a straw bedder to a drill or sprayer.

With the KUHN product range, we have a reason to go on every single farm. It works well alongside our other franchises including Massey Ferguson and Fendt.

EP: We are lucky to have a number of ex-Rea Valley Tractors and Malpas Tractors employees who are very familiar with the brand and passionate about the products, that knowledge and energy has

 The TR Machinery depot in Newport, officially opened in 2025
“People can see we are investing in our premises and in the industry, we are here to stay!”

helped us hit the ground running like we have. It’s also really handy because their UK base, location-wise, is just 10 minutes up the road from our Newport depot and not much more than an hour from the other depots. Then, when it comes to the paperwork side, not having to deal directly with import documentation and costs is a huge bonus.

MG: We would like to think in the future, being so close, that we can work quite collaboratively with the team at KUHN UK. As machinery becomes more advanced, how is your after-sales and service department keeping pace with new technology to meet modern customer expectations?

EP: After-sales-wise, any opportunity that we have with the manufacturers for product training and installation, we send members of the team. Then, similar with the sales team, our manufacturers are very proactive with training, and even if there isn’t an official training programme running, the representatives from the brands will come to the depot and spend an afternoon offering guidance to the team if we feel like it’s necessary.

MG: The service side of our business has come a long way. Our engineers now have access to their job cards on their phones, so they can directly upload

images of a job as it’s being done. We also have trackers on our vans, which lets us quickly send the closest engineer when an emergency job comes in. Tools like Fendt Connect also help us be more proactive. For example, if a tractor is coming up for a service and we have an engineer in that area, we can get the job done on the same day. All of these things help us provide a more efficient and streamlined service for our customers.

From a dealer’s perspective, what are the most significant changes you’ve observed in customer demands over the last five to ten years?

MG: Over the past five years, customer demands have changed quite a bit, mostly because of new technology and a push to be more data driven. Farmers are now using fewer but bigger and smarter machines. This has led to a big jump in the use of telematics, which helps them keep a close eye on running costs and efficiency. The customer base has also become more divided; you’ve got your small-scale farms on one end and large farmers and contractors on the other, with not many in between.

EP: Because these big farms rely on expensive, high-tech machines, they expect them to be running all the time. This means there’s a much higher demand

for fast, reliable aftersales service from dealers to make sure their equipment is always good to go.

MG: One thing that hasn’t changed is our customers’ need for a reliable backup. We’re in a strong position to provide that, thanks to our large stock of machines. Whether a 500hp tractor or a 90hp loader tractor goes down, our customers know we can provide a temporary solution while their equipment is being repaired. In such a specialist industry, how do you attract and retain skilled talent, from technicians to sales staff, and build a strong team?

MG: I do feel like the brands that we represent are desirable, and a lot of younger people want to work with these brands. But similarly to the customers and what they like to see, prospective employees look to the company, the history, the investment and in an uncertain world at the moment, those things are very important.

EP: People can see we are investing in our premises and in the industry, we are here to stay! I find that you do get more people saying they want to work for a family firm over a corporate one. They don’t want to feel like a number; they want to feel like part of a team.

We’ve always worked to build a strong team spirit. We usually have a summer and a Christmas party, which are great opportunities for everyone from all the depots to get together. I love that I know everyone in the group by name still.

We’ve taken on eleven former Malpas Tractors employees, with at least one in each depot, and it took some time to get everyone integrated. But now, it feels like they’re all fully part of the RVW Pugh and TR Machinery teams. We no longer see

them as “ex-Malpas” staff; they’re part of the team, and everyone has integrated well.

I also think our flat management structure is important, and we operate an open-door policy. We don’t have layers of management or fancy titles. Everyone has a role to play within the business, but there’s no hierarchy. We don’t want to get so big that we lose that personal touch and the focus on our people. Our team members do what they do, and we encourage them to come in and talk to us about anything, work-related or not. It’s just nice to have that direct connection, and the business runs better because of it.

RVW Pugh has been a BAGMA member for over 20 years now. From your perspective as a member and a previous member of the BAGMA council, what is the most significant value that BAGMA

provides to yourselves and to the industry today?

EP: We’ve used BAGMA in various parts of our business, but the Legal Helpline is the primary resource. Since we don’t have a dedicated HR department, we rely on it quite a bit, especially when new legislation is introduced or we need a quick check on something. We’ve also utilised their Handover & Installation training in the past. Being a member of the BAGMA council for several years was a great experience. I believe BAGMA remains an important source of news for our industry and provides a crucial platform for dealers to come together to discuss shared challenges. While manufacturers are facilitating more collaboration, I feel it’s vital for dealers to have joined-up thinking, whether we compete or not, especially with the challenges agriculture faces right now. Beyond the recent expansions, what is your long-term vision for the RVW Pugh Group over the next five years?

MG: Five years is a lot to think about, especially at the moment with such an up and down industry. But I would like to see us streamline what we are doing to make our service even better and focused for our customers.

EP: We want to do what we do and do it well. My ideal measure of success would be that my staff come into a job that they enjoy for a company they enjoy working for, and that customers receive good service. We also want to keep retaining high satisfaction scores of 9s and 10s with AGCO. Our biggest fear is growing too quickly and losing that by not listening to the needs of our staff and customers. It’s better to take smaller, more deliberate steps than to run too fast. The past year has been anything but small steps, so now it’s a chance for us to stay firm and concentrate on the great foundation we have.

KUHN Farm Machinery has revealed the Karan highcapacity trailed sprayer range aimed at farmers and contractors requiring high daily spraying outputs and innovative technology to improve application accuracy.

Initially available as the mid-range Power model featuring steel and aluminium boom width options from 24 to 39 metres, the Karan range will extend to basic and high-end models, offering boom widths

KUHN introduces new generation sprayer range

from 18m to 45m, and tank capacities of 4,500, 5,200, 6,000 and 8,000 litres. The Karan offers choice and versatility, with configurations compatible with the simplest operations through to the most advanced requirements.

Edd Fanshawe, KUHN’s arable product specialist, says: “The new Karan has been four years in development, with extensive field testing, to ensure we’re bringing a product to users that will compete at the high-capacity end of the trailed sprayer market. The design of the machine is 99% new and is specifically aimed at maximising spraying time and accuracy.”

Central to the new range of Karan trailed sprayers is KUHN’s new Eagle automatic contour control system – an advanced technology package that uses ultrasonic sensors to constantly monitor and adjust boom position in relation to the spray target. This highly adaptable system adjusts to varying crop height or terrain (from a height of 30cm), ensuring optimum distances are always maintained.

The Autoset solution system enables tank filling at 900 litres/minute and spraying at up to 500 litres/minute, whilst rapid and thorough main tank cleaning is made possible by twin 360-degree rotating nozzles. A newly developed induction hopper is included as standard on the Karan, offering a rapid intake capacity of up to 220 litres/minute.

Precision spraying capability on Karan sprayers is achieved through incorporation of KUHN’s established Autospray PWM (pulse width modulation) technology.

A centred vertical hydraulic stand makes hitching of the Karan a simple operation, and there is an optional hydraulic pump drive that offers additional coupling and driving benefits. Control systems have been designed to provide all essential information as clearly and intuitively as possible, with bespoke screen displays for use in-cab or on the machine.

The Karan will be available in the UK for demonstrations during spring 2026.

The Show Goes On with Kubota fleet atThe NEC

A fleet of 30 G261 units from Kubota’s G-Series are helping to keep waste and facilities services on track at one of the country’s leading exhibition centres.

The delivery from Hunts Engineering to The NEC Birmingham was well received by Darren Hawkins, Head of Soft Services, and a large team of OCS Group operatives who are now benefitting from Kubota comfort, convenience and reliability across the NEC, Vox Conference Centre and BP Pulse Arena.

OCS Group have been responsible for cleaning, waste, cloakrooms, portering and the wider estates at the NEC Group’s venues since 2012. “We narrowed our initial search down to two brands before speaking to Richard Lucas from Hunts Engineering who brought us a Kubota G261 on demonstration” explains Darren. “We quite quickly discovered it could deliver everything our previous machines could with the added benefit of fantastic support from Richard and the team.”

The first delivery of 20 units was made in March 2025, later joined by an additional 10 units in July. “Their main task is to tow 1280 litre bins to various points, collecting litter and other waste during event build ups and breakdowns. As the old saying goes ‘the show must go on’ whether we’ve got machines to collect the litter or not so reliability is critical for us. So far, the Kubota’s haven’t missed a beat.”

The reliability of the fleet of G261’s reaffirms the sentiments of the NEC Estates Team, who have benefitted from the trusty power and performance of a Kubota M5-092 for the last 18 months.

“It was the positive feedback from the Estates Department that really spurred me on to look at smaller machines in the Kubota range” Darren adds.

CONNECTING WITH

Charlie Nicklin, CEO of IAgrE

Discusses

the changes he’s witnessed within both the engineering and educational arenas after close to 30 years in the industry.

What’s your background?

I grew up on our family farm in Staffordshire, messing around with motorbikes, tractors, etc. which then led me into engineering. I Initially wanted to be a tractor mechanic (which I still am at weekends!) so I did my National Diploma in Ag Engineering at Reaseheath in Cheshire. I then got the academic bug and went on to Harper Adams to do my degree. After graduating, I worked for an agro-chemical company for three years, designing and installing chemical spraying equipment into animal feed mills.

My interests in farm machinery then led me to apply for a role at JCB. After starting as a Design Engineer on telehandlers in 1996, I went on to lead projects and eventually I looked after the agricultural Loadall range. In 2005, I became Chief Engineer for tractors, heading up R&D for 11 years. In 2016, I became Chief Engineer on Backhoe Loaders (BHL) which was a big step up, and a role I held for just under five years before COVID struck and cost-cutting at JCB led me to explore other opportunities in the industry.

What are the major changes you’ve witnessed in the industry?

In the 80’s you had a big tractor if it had 6 cylinders! Average power has

pretty much tripled and continues to rise to maximise productivity and efficiency. It’s questionable whether equipment can physically get any bigger due to road transportation but power density (kW/ Tonne) in tractors will continue to rise.

The “electronic” revolution also started in the 80’s, pioneered by MF, along with their innovative combines yield mapping work. The technology now is fantastic with developments in boom section control, variable rate application, spotspraying, automated headland turns, the list goes on! Customer demand has driven such development, the challenge for some has been making it reliable.

Other major changes include engine emissions and equipment cost which continues to rise. For engineers, its an exciting time given the rise of autonomous machines, electrification and changes to farming methods to achieve sustainability.

Looking specifically at Education & Training, how has this evolved over the years?

When I started the role I wanted to understand the education landscape; I was pretty shocked at what I found. At the vocational level there are pockets of excellence, some have fantastic staff, some have fantastic facilities, very few have both and some have neither! We have some excellent qualifications, such as the apprenticeship schemes, thanks largely to LE-TEC (Land-based Engineering Training & Education Committee) who have pulled industry experts together and ensured the schemes are fit for purpose. The tractor OEMs use the qualifications to great effect and it gives the dealers what they need from a technician perspective. It does however drive them to a certain role and not to the broader aspects of agricultural engineering. We have lost the mid-range HNC/HND education which has created a divide between the vocational level and graduate which isn’t good for the sector. In Britain

we only have one university offering Ag Engineering at degree level, yet agricultural technology is fundamental to sustainable food production and our actual existence.

What’s the situation with T Levels and how will this impact the opportunities for those exploring careers in the landbased sector?

T-levels are replacing the existing level 3 qualifications. I dislike the mandatory “common core” business / management / sales element which occupies too much space in the syllabus at the expense of other subject-specific items. Only a small number of colleges have started offering these in the last couple of years but this will increase as the funding gets withdrawn from the old courses. There are challenges around the work placement and how it is achieved with industry; my view is that it would be better done in blocks rather than a day/ week. Hopefully we will see learners go from a T-level into either vocational roles or onto university to study at a higher level, as the BTEC qualifications did before.

How are IAgrE working with associations like BAGMA, and initiatives such as We Are Land-based Engineering to attract the next generation?

LE-TEC brings our organisations together and we work well and complement each other. IAgrE have a close relationship with BAGMA and the AEA. The AEA’s members are the manufacturers/importers, BAGMA’s are the dealers/retailers and ours are the people. We’re all about personal development through improving knowledge via CPD and recognition of qualifications and competence. I’m really keen to get more land-based technicians onto our Technician Register, they can be proud of having TIAgrE after their name. We all want the industry to be seen as professional, so we should recognise professionalism within it. Our members sign up to a code of conduct and are required to carry out regular CPD to maintain/extend their knowledge.

“We Are Land-based” is a fantastic initiative which showcases careers in our industry, it shows young people where and what they could study, and potential employers. It’s also given the industry access to material with a consistent message which schools/careers hubs can take on board to generate interest in our sector. It all helps raise visibility of the fantastic sector we work in.

“We have partnered with Safety Aide Ltd for over 20 years and we have always been very impressed with their service throughout. They are very professional and always willing to help you on any aspect relating to Health & Safety. There’s no doubt that Safety Aide have been instrumental in keeping all of our stakeholders safe at work and ensuring our compliance with the HSE across all of our locations.”
