Introduction The Next Generation Toolkit is designed to help productions act, measure and celebrate sustainability through three connected tools. Together, these tools support productions in implementing sustainable practices and gain recognition for their achievements.

Coming soon. A digital version of the Sustainable Production Guide will be integrated into the Toolkit, providing tailored guidance based on your production's needs. In the meantime, departmental Sustainable Production Guides are available via the Resources link in the Toolkit, which directs you to the resources page on the BAFTA Albert website. These resources are designed to support your sustainability planning and certification journey. Please note that guides and checklists are for guidance only and cannot be submitted as evidence on their own. Supporting documentation must be provided to demonstrate that actions have been implemented by your production.

It explains the certification process, application requirements, evidence submission, and assessment outcomes. By following this guidance, productions can prepare high-quality applications and ensure their sustainability achievements are clearly evidenced throughout the assessment process.

I will use information only for its intended purpose. Embrace the Process I will approach this process as a learning opportunity rather than a compliance task as I understand that engagement helps identify meaningful ways to reduce emissions. Connect to the Purpose I recognise that my participation goes beyond reporting. It helps our industry understand its impact and accelerate climate action. Commit to Action Beyond Measurement I will use insights from the Carbon Calculator, resources, and certification to implement meaningful changes. Overview of Certification Programme The BAFTA Albert Certification Programme enables productions to demonstrate their achievement against key environmental sustainability criteria, recognising and rewarding those that go beyond minimum expectations. • • •

Certification is a dynamic, evidence-based process built around a flexible, points-based system. Actions vary in both impact and effort required. Productions can choose from a set of prescribed sustainability actions or propose their own initiatives for consideration.

This approach sets out a clear definition of what ‘good’ looks like, while remaining adaptable to the range of circumstances and constraints of different production methods. BAFTA Albert Certified This is the standard route applied for by productions, close to or after wrap. Productions apply for the Certified Route towards the end of production, answering questions and providing evidence of the sustainable actions that have taken place throughout. BAFTA Albert Committed This is an exceptional route created for TV productions that have a legitimate need for recognition before their transmission / broadcast date. Eligible productions can apply as early as the first day of prep and submit evidence of processes, policies, and frameworks established in pre-production to support sustainable practices, throughout the production.

How the two marks relate Both marks use the same points‑based system and require evidence of equal rigour. The distinction lies solely in the stage of production they reflect and what the evidence is demonstrating. The marks are fully independent. A production that first achieves Committed may later apply for Certified, but this is treated as a new, separate application with its own evidence requirements. Points or credit do not transfer between the two.

Who can apply In order to apply for Certification, a production must meet the following minimum eligibility criteria: • The aggregated duration of the programme or entire series must be at least 15 minutes. • The total budget for the project (including all episodes, where applicable) must be at least £50,000. These eligibility thresholds help ensure that Certification data remains representative of the film and television industry and that submissions can be managed effectively by BAFTA Albert. This enables resources to be focused on productions with the greatest potential environmental impact, helping to maximise the value and effectiveness of the Certification programme.

Alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are 17 global goals adopted by world leaders in 2015 to help create a fairer, healthier and more sustainable world.

Productions that achieve BAFTA Albert Certified or BAFTA Albert Committed status are contributing to these global goals through their sustainability actions and commitments. Analysis of the BAFTA Albert certification framework shows alignment with all 17 SDGs, with the strongest contribution to: •

Which Certification Route Is Right For You? BAFTA Albert Certified This is the standard route applied for by productions, close to or after wrap. Productions apply for the Certified Route towards the end of production, answering questions and providing evidence of the sustainable actions that have taken place throughout. BAFTA Albert Committed This is an exceptional route created for TV productions that have a legitimate need for recognition before their transmission / broadcast date. Committed Route Overview Workflow Committed is an exceptional route created for TV productions that have a legitimate need for recognition before their transmission / broadcast date. It can be applied for any time from pre-production until before TX. Unlike the Certified Route, which evidences completed actions at the end of production, the Committed Route enables productions to submit evidence of processes, policies, and frameworks established in pre-production to support sustainable practices. The criteria are adapted to reflect this earlier stage. This is also supported by a Committed Route Code of Practice that must be signed by a senior member of the crew.

Committed Route Application Process Route Selection Once you have set your production up on the Toolkit we advise you to start the certification process as soon as possible, to ensure you understand the requirements. If you select ‘Certification’ the below screen will appear and you can select ‘Apply’ on the BAFTA Albert Committed Route.

Committed Route Access Request To apply for access to the Committed Route, complete and submit a Committed Route Access Request. Ensure all mandatory fields are completed. Where relevant, use the comments box to provide additional context that may assist with the review of your request. As the Committed Route is intended for exceptional circumstances, the ‘reason why’ drop-down menu contains a list of the scenarios we would typically expect productions to use when requesting access. These options reflect the most common and anticipated reasons for accessing this route. While requests outside of these categories are unusual, we recognise that exceptional or unique circumstances may arise. For this reason, an 'Other' option is available. If you select 'Other', you must provide additional information in the comments box explaining the circumstances of your request. Requests submitted without sufficient supporting information may be rejected or returned pending further clarification.

You must download a copy of the Sustainable Production Code of Practice using the Download button at the top of the screen. The document must then be signed by an individual at Production Manager level or above and uploaded as part of your request. Requests submitted without a signed Code of Practice cannot be approved. An example of a completed and signed Code of Practice can be found on page 14 of this guide.

Example of Sustainable Production Code of Practice By signing this Code, the production commits to upholding these principles in a way that is appropriate to its specific context and operational constraints, throughout all stages of production. Where possible this production commits to: Leadership Maintain clear sustainability leadership, integrate environmental considerations into decision making and allocate appropriate budget and resources to support sustainable practices across all departments and workflows. Skills & Engagement Support sustainability training, communicate our approach clearly and foster a culture where sustainability is valued and all team members can contribute. Sustainable Suppliers Prioritise suppliers who are local / demonstrate environmental responsibility, include sustainability requirements in contracts, supply sustainable goods and support circular economy approaches. Carbon Footprint Measure our environmental impact, set meaningful reduction targets and be transparent about our progress and learnings. Essential Actions Take practical action to reduce emissions from energy, travel, transport, materials, waste and other significant areas. Prioritise lower impact options for facilities, logistics and operational activities. Circularity Design out waste through smart planning and careful purchasing. Manage assets so they can be reused, donated, or passed on. Follow the waste hierarchy (prevent, reduce, reuse, recycle, recover, dispose). Separate waste streams properly and avoid single-use items. Catering Prioritise caterers who prioritise sustainable sourcing, low emission options and food / catering waste reduction. Biodiversity Protect filming locations, particularly sensitive natural environments and minimise disruption to ecosystems. On Screen Sustainability Be mindful of how sustainability is portrayed on screen, avoiding normalisation of unsustainable behaviours and reflecting environmental and climate themes authentically where relevant. Positive Contributions Create lasting positive impact beyond our immediate filming activities through wider sustainability initiatives, community support and using your influence to drive meaningful change. Knowledge Sharing Share our learnings, innovations and challenges with the wider industry to support collective progress. Continuous Improvement Commit to ongoing learning, regularly review our performance and adapt our approach based on experience, learnings and feedback.

Access Request Submission & Outcome Toolkit Status: Not Started Once submitted, a confirmation message will be displayed on screen to confirm that your request has been received. We aim to review Committed Route Access Requests within 1 to 2 working days.

There are two possible outcomes for your access request:

Outcome 1: Request Not Approved If your request is not approved, a message explaining the reason will be displayed within the Certification section the next time you log in. This may be to: •

Signpost you to the Certified Route if it is deemed more appropriate for your production; or

•

Request additional information to help us assess your eligibility for the Committed Route.

Where further information is required, you may submit a new access request once the necessary details have been provided.

Outcome 2: Request Approved If your request is approved, you will see the confirmation message shown below. You can then select 'Start Now' to begin the certification process via the Committed Route.

Complete Questionnaire Toolkit Status: In Process Once access to the Committed Route has been approved, you can begin completing the certification questionnaire. This questionnaire is designed to capture the processes, policies, plans, and frameworks your production has in place to support sustainable decision-making and actions throughout the production You can find in depth guidance in the Questions, Guidance and Evidence Suggestions chapter of this guide. For the best possible outcome, make use of all the tools available to you: •

Sustainable Production Guide: Access resources, checklists & practical guidance to help you reduce emissions across your production. To help ensure your score accurately reflects the effort and impact of your sustainability actions, please take a moment to review the guidance below on the different answer options available.

Suggested options Each certification question includes a list of standard sustainability actions commonly used, allowing you to quickly select any that apply to your work. We also recognise that sustainable practice can involve new or innovative approaches. If your production meets the intention of a question through actions that are not included in the listed options, you can use the comments box (the last option on the list) to explain what you did and how it aligns with the intent of the question.

Comments box option The comments box serves two purposes: •

Alternative Evidence Use this box to describe sustainability actions or approaches that aren’t covered by the standard answer options but still meet the intention of the question. Any claims you make must be supported by appropriate evidence.

Additional Context You can also use the comments box to share any further information that may help us understand your response, such as challenges you faced, innovative solutions you introduced, or circumstances that shaped your sustainability decisions.

How we assess narrative responses Narrative comments are evaluated using the same criteria as the prescribed options: •

Do your activities genuinely address the sustainability objective behind the question?

Is the evidence you provide clear, credible, and sufficient?

If the question does not apply In the Environmental Impact Actions sections, you have the option to hide questions that do not apply to your production. If you choose this option, you will need to provide a brief justification, but you will not be penalised for selecting it. Please provide a clear and credible justification, as we will review your reasoning before approving the question as not applicable. Once approved, your score will be automatically recalculated based only on the questions relevant to your production, ensuring a fair assessment.

Selecting your answers and submitting your questionnaire Once you start your certification questionnaire, you will see the screen below. All questions are organised under four key themes: •

Each theme can be expanded to reveal the questions within it, allowing you to complete the questionnaire section by section. To the right of each key theme is a small arrow that can be selected to expand / collapse the section and reveal / hide the questions.

Work through each question individually and provide your response. Once you have answered all questions within a section, select Save before moving on to the next section.

Repeat this process until all sections have been completed and saved. When all sections are complete, select Submit for Assessment, located near the top of the screen. All questions must be answered to before you can submit. Please answer honestly and accurately, as you may be asked to provide supporting evidence for selected responses. Note: Contribution To a Sustainable Future section. Points will be awarded following assessment and will not appear in your total score until review is complete. Important: To enable scoring, you must select any relevant options and complete the narrative comments box by selecting the final option ‘Please expand on your selection in order for us to assess and assign a score’ and filling in the comment box . Assessors cannot award points without supporting information in the comments box.

Some questions allow multiple answers where applicable. Before submitting, review your application carefully, as responses cannot be edited afterwards. If clarification is required during assessment, you will have one opportunity to amend your application before a final decision is made.

Keeping a track of your predicated score Once you begin answering the questionnaire, you'll notice a grey box at the top of the screen displaying your current score. This score will update automatically as you complete the questionnaire and can be used to track your progress against the certification requirements. It is important to keep in mind that the minimum pass mark for certification is 55%. Note: The Contributions to a Sustainable Future section is worth up to 5 additional points. These points are awarded during the assessment process and cannot be self-scored within the questionnaire. Toolkit Status after you have submitted: Assessing Actions At this stage, you will be able to view your responses but will no longer be able to edit them. Your application will then join the assessment queue. Once your assessment has been completed, you will receive an email notification and can proceed to the next step of the certification process.

Switching Routes You can switch between the Committed Route and the Certified Route if you determine that the alternative route is more suitable for your production. Before changing routes, it is important to understand that all previously entered responses will be permanently removed. This is because each route has a different set of questions and assessment requirements. If you switch routes, you will need to start the new route from the beginning and complete the relevant questionnaire in full. If you later decide to switch back to your original route, you will again need to start from the beginning, as none of your previous responses will be retained. To help prevent accidental data loss, the system will display a warning message before you confirm the route change, ensuring you understand the implications and are happy to proceed.

Outcome of Assessing Actions Once you submit your certification questionnaire, it will be reviewed by an assessor. Following this review, there are two possible outcomes.

Outcome 1: Further Information Required If your responses are clear, complete and achieve the minimum certification pass mark of 55%, your application will progress to the next stage. At this point, your assessor will select specific responses for which supporting evidence is required. You will receive an email notification, and your certification status will change to Evidence Required. Please now follow the guidance on Submitting Evidence on the following page.

Outcome 2: Further Information Required If your assessor identifies responses that require clarification, additional information, or amendment, or if your score falls below the minimum pass mark of 55%, your application will be returned to you for updates. You will receive an email notification, and your certification status will change to ‘In Progress’ indicate that further action is required.

What You Need to Do Review the assessor's feedback carefully. The assessor's comments will be displayed in the grey information box at the top of the certification questionnaire.

Once you have addressed all feedback and updated your responses, resubmit your application for review. Your assessor will then reassess the questionnaire and determine whether it can progress to the next stage of the certification process. Tip: Providing clear, detailed information when responding to feedback will help avoid delays and improve the likelihood of your application progressing to the evidence stage.

Submit Evidence Toolkit Status: Evidence Required This is the stage where you will upload the evidence and documentation required to support the sustainability actions reported in your application. If your assessor has provided feedback, it will be displayed in the grey information box at the top of the screen. Please review this carefully before uploading your evidence. You will also see yellow warning triangles and the status Evidence Required next to the relevant key themes. Expanding a key theme will show which specific questions require evidence and display the same Evidence Required status against each applicable question.

Before You Begin Before uploading your evidence, we recommend familiarising yourself with the following sections of this guide: • •

Uploading your Evidence Work through each evidence request and upload the supporting documents for the relevant question. Use the comments box to clearly explain how the uploaded evidence supports your answer and demonstrates the action taken. Once you are satisfied this is complete press ‘save’. Note: It is also important to remember that the comments you provide alongside your evidence form a key part of the assessment. Clearly explaining how each piece of evidence supports your answer can be the difference between evidence being accepted or rejected. • • •

Does the activity genuinely address the sustainability objective behind the question? Is the evidence clear, credible and sufficient to support the claim being made? Would an independent reviewer be able to understand and verify the action from the evidence provided and comment left, to explain the uploaded evidence.

Taking a few moments to review these points before uploading evidence can help ensure your submission progresses smoothly through the assessment process. Once you are satisfied that you have uploaded all requested evidence and provided clear explanations in the comments boxes, ensure all entries have been saved before selecting Submit for Assessment.

Assessment Outcomes Once your evidence has been assessed, your application will result in one of three possible outcomes. The outcome will be communicated by email and will also be visible within the Certification section of the Toolkit.

Outcome 1: Certification requirements met Congratulations. Your application has successfully met the certification requirements. •

You will receive an email confirming the outcome.

•

Your production will be awarded BAFTA Albert Committed.

•

You will be able to download the BAFTA Albert Committed Mark from the Certification section of your production.

Outcome 2: Amendments Required This outcome means that additional information, clarification or evidence is required before a final certification decision can be made. Note: Productions will normally be given one opportunity to address the assessor's feedback and resubmit their application. As BAFTA Albert Certification is a recognised industry certification, applications are expected to be complete, accurate and supported by appropriate evidence. This outcome may occur if: •

Responses require further clarification.

•

Additional evidence is needed.

•

Evidence does not sufficiently support the action claimed.

•

Information provided is incomplete or unclear.

•

The application has not achieved the minimum pass mark.

If amendments are required: •

You will receive an email notifying you of the outcome.

•

Assessor feedback will be available within your application.

•

The feedback will explain:  What needs to be clarified, amended or evidenced.  Any additional information or documentation required.  How assessment decisions have affected your score.  The steps needed before resubmission.

Carefully review the feedback, make the requested changes and resubmit your application once all points have been addressed.

Outcome 3: Application Declined This outcome means the application has not met the requirements for certification. If your application is declined: •

You will receive an email confirming the outcome.

Feedback will be provided explaining the reasons for the decision.

•

The feedback may include:  Key evidence or scoring decisions that contributed to the outcome.  Areas where the application did not meet the certification standard.  Recommendations that may help strengthen a future application.

Note: As the application has not achieved certification, the production must not download, display or use the BAFTA Albert Committed mark.

Certification Mark Rules The BAFTA Albert Committed Mark can only be used in accordance with the Rules for Use of the BAFTA Albert Certification Marks policy, which can be accessed and read on our website. These Rules form part of, and supplement, the BAFTA Albert Toolkit Agreement Terms and Conditions between BAFTA Albert and each Production Company.

BAFTA Albert grants to the Production Company, with effect from the date on which BAFTA Albert confirms in writing that the production has achieved BAFTA Albert Committed status, a limited, revocable, non-transferable, non-sub-licensable, royalty-free and non-exclusive license to use the relevant mark solely in accordance with these Rules.

Only productions who have applied along the committed route, been assessed, and received confirmation they have met the required standard may use the Committed Mark which has been supplied via the Toolkit system.

The Committed mark can only be used for the specific production which has applied for certification, e.g. additional series of the same show need to independently apply for and be awarded certification to be approved to use the Certification mark.

Appealing a Certification Decision If you believe your certification decision was made in error, you may appeal. An appeal is a request for a review of the original decision. It is not an opportunity to submit a revised certification application. Appeals are submitted via an Appeal Application Form. To obtain access to the form, please contact BAFTA Albert or your international partner.

Before You Begin Appeals must be submitted within 30 days of receiving your certification decision. Appeals received after this deadline will not normally be accepted. We aim to acknowledge appeals within 3 working days and issue an appeal decision within 10 working days of receiving all required information.

What You'll Need to Provide When submitting an appeal, have the following information ready: • Your name • Your email address • Production company name • Production title, as it appears on the BAFTA Albert toolkit • Broadcaster / Funder • Grounds for appeal. Select the option that best describes your reason:  Procedural error. The certification process was not followed correctly.  Evidence not considered. Evidence that was not reasonably available at the time of the original certification assessment and may materially affect the decision.  Misinterpretation of criteria. You believe the certification criteria were applied incorrectly by the assessor.

What Happens Next Once submitted, your appeal will be reviewed by an appeals panel with members not involved in the original decision. Please ensure all required fields are completed before submitting your appeal. Additional information may be requested during the review process if required. Responding promptly to any requests for further information will help avoid delays in the assessment of your appeal. An appeal may result in: • the original decision being upheld; • the decision being amended; or • the application being referred for further review. The appeal decision is final. Once an appeal has been concluded, no further appeals relating to the same certification decision will be accepted.

This includes anything that raises awareness of climate change, climate solutions, normalises sustainable lifestyles, or makes eco-conscious choices feel aspirational. As the nature and biodiversity crisis is interconnected with climate change it is included in the themes we track - these could include biodiversity loss, environmental disasters or regenerative land use. Climaterelated and sustainability content can be included in everyday entertainment, not just news or documentaries. While climate stories focus on environmental issues, sustainability stories are about presenting a vision for a sustainable future: human‑centred, hopeful and grounded in agency. The combination of climate and sustainability storytelling helps audiences understand the reality of climate change and imagine the possibilities for our future.
