REGISTRATION/INFORMATION
Summer will be here before we know it, and it’s the perfect time to keep dancing, try something new, and have fun at Backstage Dance Studio! Registration is no OPEN for our 6-week Summer Session, which runs from June 29th through August 6th, and we are offering a variety of dance classes in all styles and levels for danc of all ages. For our younger dancers, we’ll also have 2 weeks of themed performing arts camps, and for 6-11 y olds, we are offering 3 weeks of dance camps AND dance/gymnastics camps. We encourage all dancers to continue their training, explore new styles, and enjoy a summer full of dance and creativity. During our Shamrock Spirit Week (March 16-21), teachers are inviting parents to come into class for the last 5 to 10 minutes to see what your child has been learning in class this year! Students may show you part of the choreography they have been learning for the Spring Show, or demonstrate technique they have been working on throughout the course of the session. Each class will have a little something different to share.

When she's not teaching, Miss Lauren also loves to sing, read, and watch her sisters dance (see if you can spot them on the Signature Team poster!) She also enjoys acquiring new tap shoes for her personal collection

Iris Liu
Iris is enrolled in Miss Isabelle’s Saturday Creative Movement class. Miss Isabelle nominated Iris for always being a good listener and staying on task. Isabelle says that Iris has a fun attitude, great attendance and is an active participant in class. Excellent work, Iris!
Zoe Chen
Zoe is enrolled in Hip Hop 1 with Miss Shandie and was nominated for her hard work and for being respectful of herself and those around her Miss Shandie says that Zoe is always in the proper dress code, which is a bonus! Awesome job, Zoe!
Luke McMaster
Luke is a member of our Signature Team and was nominated by his Acro teacher, Miss Alyssa. She says that Luke is a stellar student in Acro! He is always ready to help set up the mats for the class, he focuses well when learning new skills, and he hypes up his classmates! Way to go, Luke!
Each month of our school-year session, dancers in Acro, Ballet, Hip Hop, Jazz and Tap classes will be working on particular skills. We will list these skills, along with a description (and sometimes links to additional information about the skills) in the newsletter. Practicing these skills outside of class is beneficial, so we encourage you to ask your dancers for demonstrations at home!

Definition: Full Scorpion: Both hands holding foot (or leg), supporting leg straight, still balance although a set time is not required, control, body upright and square.

Definition: A sequence of footsteps used to transition from one dance move to the next. Completing a full pas de bourrée begins by stepping back. Dancers then step to the side and back to the front. The movement is often repeated quickly to travel across the dance floor

tap BUFFALO
Definition: A tap step consisting of a step, shuffle, and a small jump (with shuffling foot going behind).
A.K.A. Shuffle Off To Buffalo, was created by vaudevillian jig and clog dancer Pat Rooney in the 1880s.
Advanced students can do flap shuffle leap.

Signature Team Updates:
The SIGNATURE Team has been busy dancing their hearts out throughout the month of February! They just finished up their first two competitions and conventions of the season, Revive and DanceMakers. We’re so proud of the energy and passion they’ve brought to their classes and their competition performances!
Our Signature Team dancers also performed their competition dances for the BDS community during their “Footnotes” Showcase on March 1st at IKEA Performing Arts Center at Renton High School.

STARS Team Updates:
Our STARS Teams are busily preparing for their first competition of the season at Spotlight Dance Competition the week of March 20th, and will have dress rehearsals in class before hitting the stage. The following weekend, they will perform again at AMP Dance Competition. We can’t wait to see them shine on stage!
Our STARS 102 Red and Purple teams compete in tap and hip hop, our STARS 103 team competes in hip hop and contemporary, and our STARS 104 team performs in contemporary. Good luck to all our STARS dancers!
