Owning Our Future: Baby Steps Auburn House Case for Support

Page 1

Owning our Future

Our Mission is at Risk.

Baby Steps has called a lovely property in Auburn’s historic district “home” since 2017. The house and grounds are ideal, located less than a mile from Auburn University’s campus and provide the ability to offer individual housing, community, and support to Student-Moms facing an unplanned pregnancy.

In 2025, the property owner decided to place the house on the market. In response, Baby Steps returned to what has been an ongoing search for a comparable property similarly close to Auburn University’s campus.

The search revealed what we always suspected: our current house is uniquely configured to serve our mission.

Given the increase in housing prices since our founding in 2017 along with the increase in rental prices, Baby Steps’ ability to offer housing to Student-Moms at no cost is at risk.

Recognizing the challenge facing Baby Steps, the property owner presented us with a remarkable opportunity to own our home.

Baby Steps has the chance to buy the property at below market value.

“Baby Steps allowed me to raise my daughter in a peaceful and stable environment, something I couldn’t have done otherwise. I didn’t have to worry about how I was going to afford rent, bills, and daycare while going to school full-time. They gave me the ability to focus on school so that I could build the future my daughter and I deserve.”

- Sidney, Baby Steps Alumni

The Need is Clear. The Timing is Critical.

The opportunity to purchase the Baby Steps house is a defining moment in our journey, but this opportunity won’t last forever.

Real estate prices have nearly doubled in the last decade. Auburn’s campus population has expanded year after year. This purchase is both urgent and strategic.

Owning the house solidifies Baby Steps’ presence at Auburn University, reduces annual operational costs, and upholds the foundation of support that has helped Student-Moms earn their degrees.

For many students, the cost of housing can rival or even exceed the cost of tuition. Purchasing the Baby Steps house allows us to alleviate a financial burden and provide life-changing support at the heart of our mission.

“The best part about living in the Baby Steps house is having a place to lay our heads with no worries or frustrations.”
- Tyneshia, Baby Steps Alumni

From 2015 to 2025, tuition has increased by 24.54%, while the cost of living for college students has risen more than 20%. Housing prices have increased 95% over the last 10 years. The student population has gone up 25% in the last decade. The data shows that consistent financial increases over the years make being a Student-Mom that much more difficult.
