Hilton Hotels CEO Chris Nassetta is a living example of staying flexible while considering the long game when it comes to entrepreneurial thinking. To maintain the loyalty of Hilton housekeepers, bellhops, and other frontline workers despite the hotel shutdowns during the height of the pandemic, Nassetta built a Hilton Workforce Resource Center. The center connected Hilton staff with temporary jobs at retailers with increased demand, such as CVS, Amazon, and Albertsons.
Highly unconventional, this move demonstrated his willingness to try something new, to take a risk, with the goal of maintaining long-term engagement and motivation with Hilton’s workforce.
In this case study, Nassetta is demonstrating how a truly entrepreneurial mindset means shifting between elaboration logic and implementation logic. Babson can break down these key frameworks for leaders, guiding companies and leaders alike through embracing entrepreneurial thinking.

The future of work needs more entrepreneurial leaders who know how to create economic and social value simultaneously. Ranked 2nd best college in the U.S. (The Wall Street Journal, 2026), Babson College can help fuel these innovative mindsets through programming and advisory services for you, your team, and your company.
“Babson’s success equipping professionals with the skills and competencies required to succeed in any industry ensures that leaders of all kinds remain nimble and prepared to create solutions where the world needs them most.”
— Stephen Spinelli Jr. MBA’92, PhD Babson College President
Organizations that promote a strong culture of learning have 30–50 percent higher engagement and retention rates compared to their peers, along with increased productivity rates and profits. Yet the traditional approach to leadership development focuses on describing the problem— and the ROI of this approach is typically less than 10 percent.*
At Babson, the No. 1-ranked institution for entrepreneurship 30 years running, we prioritize action-based leadership models that enable organizational growth and development to help you stay nimble despite today’s fast pace of change. Through Babson Professional and Executive Education and Corporate Engagement, we work with and alongside corporations to increase your investment in professional development and advisory services, because we believe you deserve 100 percent.

“As a school like Babson knows very well, you can’t transform a company by changing the portfolio of businesses or by changing the capital allocation. The real transformation comes from the culture, and I think that was the pivotal moment in Pfizer, where we turned and we said that we are going to be a purpose-driven company.”
— Dr. Albert Bourla H’21 Chairman and CEO of Pfizer

Considering today’s rapid pace of change, you need teams who can confidently navigate uncertainty while building collaborative working relationships.
Babson’s world-renowned experts can develop corporate workshops and programs that center around immersive scenarios unique to your corporation, government, NGO, nonprofit, or startup. Your teams will leave our programs with a shared vision and action plans to address concrete challenges, identify opportunities, and make a positive economic and social impact.

Challenge
With the disruption in the publishing industry, the CEO recognized the company’s leadership and culture needed to transform.
Solution
A two-year initiative where leaders participated in strategic work sessions, developed an entrepreneurial mindset to identify opportunities for innovation, and received coaching based on a 360-degree assessment so they could apply what they had learned directly at McGraw-Hill.
Results
Qualitative and quantitative indicators demonstrated the initiative enhanced leaders’ mindsets and skill sets, drove gains in collaboration and enterprise activity, and enabled improvements in business operations.
Many companies struggle to diversify their vendors. This effort takes investment.
After completing an audit to determine need, here are a range of actions companies have taken:
Chobani broadened their incubator recruitment strategy to reach more female and minority business owners, with the goal of filling the gap to boost the number of vendors in their space. As a result, 75 percent of the next cohort were underrepresented minority founders and 63 percent were female founders or cofounders, representing a wide range of nationalities, backgrounds, and geographies.
Another company reviewed their process for determining which vendors were qualified. They found it was based on subjective criteria. As a result, they started a certification process for vendors based on objective criteria, allowing them to use vendors they would have previously viewed as risky.
This case study demonstrates how companies frequently forget that inclusive leadership shouldn’t just be relegated to the mission statement on their website. Working with Babson will help you develop the skills necessary in your organization for inclusive thinking and leadership.

“I wanted people to become more familiar with each other and what they do, and how they are all interconnected.”
— Michael Sweeney Executive Director for the Massachusetts State Lottery Commission
Michael Sweeney, executive director for the Massachusetts State Lottery Commission, chose roughly 25 colleagues to participate in this six-week program. The goal was to fix a problem where the lottery’s retail outlets were selling instant tickets out of order. The comprehensive plan of action they came up with, involving education, technology, and distribution, will be implemented this year. Once tickets are activated more correctly, the lottery expects to earn $2 million to $10 million in additional gross sales.

Nearly 40 percent of U.S. jobs currently sit in occupations that are likely to shrink by 2030.*
