Looking back with pride, moving forward with ambition
With summer in full swing and many of us looking forward to some muchneeded R&R, it is a pleasure to introduce this Summer Edition of our magazine - which also marks my final instalment as your President of the Ayrshire Chamber.
At this time of year, domestic and international tourists flock to Ayrshire to sample our local fayre, breathe in our sea air, explore our countryside, and soak up our rich heritage. However, international visitors account for only 8.6% of the 550,000+ overnight trips to Ayrshire, compared to 24% in Fife, 15% in Perthshire, and a national average of 30%. This represents a massive opportunity for us.
In response, the Chamber has led the creation and funding of the Ayrshire Tourism Initiative. Supported by our three local
a particular focus on capturing the North American market through our world-class golf offerings
As we go to print, it is clear the UK will have a new Prime Minister and a new Chancellor by the autumn. I hope that this brings a more pro-business, pro-jobs and pro-growth agenda to our shores. Regardless of the political landscape ahead, the Chamber - with your support and that of our partners - will continue to lead the way: representing Ayrshire, acting as the definitive voice of business, and enabling our local economy to thrive.
It has been a privilege to represent the Chamber, to strive for a more prosperous, successful Ayrshire. For that I am hugely grateful. When I hand over to my Vice President, Steven Easton in September I’ll do so with enormous pride - both in what this Chamber delivers and the small part I’ve been able to play in it.

Ayrshire and Arran: Where legacy leads
By Lynsey Eckford, Regional Director, VisitScotland
It’s hard to capture the appeal of Ayrshire and Arran through a single experience.
The region’s strengths lie in its distinct, varied and vibrant offering.
It’s a place of sweeping coastlines and island landscapes, championship golf, quality accommodation, exceptional food and drink, and distinctive cultural experiences and events.
Ayrshire gave us Robert Burns, whose words continue to resonate across generations and continents, and it was here at Prestwick in 1860 that The Open began, establishing the region at the heart of golf’s global story. These legacies remain vivid today.
The landscape itself is internationally recognised, from the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire UNESCO Biosphere to Arran’s designation as UNESCO Global Geopark in 2025. Together, these are powerful calling cards – but only offer at glimpse of what the region has to offer.
The aim now is to grow its appeal beyond its loyal domestic following.
That ambition sits at the heart of the Ayrshire International Visitor Growth Project.
Led by Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with VisitScotland and North, East and South Ayrshire Councils, the project combines targeted travel trade activity with practical support for businesses seeking to reach international markets.
Why is the visitor economy important to Scotland?
International visitors make a substantial contribution to the national economy.
The true value of tourism, however, is felt at a local level - in the accommodation provider able to trade year-round, the restaurant creating demand for regional produce and the community benefiting from greater footfall and investment.
Events are central to that picture too, creating compelling reasons to travel and helping extend demand into quieter seasons. From community traditions like the Marymass Festival and Arran Folk Festival, to global showcases such as The Open and the International Ayr Show, Festival of Flight, the region’s events calendar offers many reasons to visit.
What are international visitors looking for?
International visitors want authentic, unique, place-based journeys and they often plan well before they arrive, with around 70% using intermediaries such as tour operators to book. Building relationships with these intermediaries will be key to securing a stronger place within international itineraries.
Golf provides a compelling way into that market with Ayrshire’s championship heritage acting as a gateway to a destination of remarkable depth.
Beyond the course, visitors can taste high-quality food and drink shaped from fertile farmland, coastal waters and skilled producers such as Ayrshire Earlies and Traditional

Eckford, Regional Director

Ayrshire Dunlop cheese, both with Protected Geographical Indication status.
They can also explore “Scotland in miniature” on Arran, bringing together aweinspiring landscapes, wildlife, historic sites and island communities.
The scale of international opportunity becomes clear when you combine all these cultural and natural strengths.
What makes this project different?
The key to this project’s success lies in the partnership behind it.
It combines trusted industry relationships, international market expertise, and the collective commitment to economic growth and place development giving the project international reach while keeping local businesses firmly at its centre.
Businesses will receive advice to understand priority markets, develop experiences that are ready for international distribution and present them to potential buyers.
This is not about changing Ayrshire and Arran to suit an international audience. It’s about bringing the region’s experiences together, making them easy to discover and turning them into journeys that visitors can book.
Ayrshire and Arran’s legacy has long travelled the world. Now we invite the world to come, experience it, and carry part of that legacy back home.

Lynsey
Can your business cope with success?
Growth is something every business works towards - more sales, more customers, more opportunity. Across Ayrshire, many ambitious businesses are expanding into new markets, increasing turnover and investing in their teams. However, growth can also feel unsettling when it starts to happen and can quickly expose underlying weaknesses and bring new pressures. It is where many businesses in fact come unstuck.
Gary Ferguson, Accounts and Business Advisory Partner at Dains, works closely with owner-managed businesses and sees these challenges first-hand.
One of the most common challenges businesses face is managing cashflow. Growth consumes cash faster than most expect.
Businesses can find themselves stretched, funding increased stock levels, higher payroll costs and dealing with larger tax burdens, whilst increased sales don’t always translate into immediate cash with longer debtor cycles.
A lack of financial visibility can also catch business owners out. Businesses often outgrow their reporting systems, while processes that worked on a smaller scale become inefficient and the “how we’ve always done it” approach starts to fail as volume and complexity increase.
Gary said:
“Planning is key. Businesses need to understand their cashflow position under different scenarios, from bulk purchasing to delayed customer payments, consider funding options before they become a necessity, and ensure internal systems can scale as the

business grows, with standardised processes and the right technology in place. Just as importantly, owners often need to transition from being involved in every operational detail to focusing on leadership, delegation and longterm strategy. As the old saying goes, failing to plan is planning to fail.”

Award winning distillery showcases region’s unique character
Lochlea Distillery, an independent family-owned farm distillery in South Ayrshire, is heading into the summer season with a major international award win for its Single Estate Core Range.
The full range, Our Barley, Orchard & Oak, Dark Briar and Smoke Without Fire, has been awarded Double Gold at the 2026 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, less than a year after its launch. Double Gold is only awarded when every judge on the blind-tasting panel gives a whisky a Gold-level score, making it one of the most respected accolades in the industry.
For Lochlea, the recognition is particularly meaningful. The distillery grows its own barley on Lochlea Farm, distils every drop
of spirit on site, and matures its casks in its own warehouses. The result is whisky with a direct connection to the land, the farm and the people who make it.
Alongside the award-winning range, Lochlea continues to welcome whisky lovers into its story through its Private Cask Programme. Each year, the distillery dedicates a small portion of production to filling private casks, giving a limited number of people the opportunity to own a cask distilled entirely on the farm and follow its journey from barley to bottle.
As Ayrshire prepares for the summer visitor season, Lochlea is proud to play its part in showcasing the quality, character and ambition of the region’s produce.

Cautious optimism for Ayrshire businesses despite continued cost pressures
The latest Ayrshire Quarterly Economic Survey (QES) from the Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce indicates increasing stability and resilience among businesses across the region, despite ongoing pressure from costs, taxation and recruitment challenges.
The Q1 2026 survey draws on responses from 113 businesses, who employ more than 17,000 people, and provides a snapshot of the trading conditions, investment and levels of business confidence experienced before the Scottish Parliamentary elections took place.
Cost pressures remain significant
Ayrshire firms continue to experience stronger cost pressures than the UK average:
• 59% of businesses report taxation as a growing concern
• 53% cite inflation, down from the previous quarter
• Labour costs (72%) and utilities (59%) are the main drivers of price pressure
Policy disconnect continues to weigh on confidence
The survey also highlights significant concern over the alignment between government policy and business reality:
• 66% of Ayrshire businesses do not believe the Scottish Government understands their needs
• 59% believe current Scottish and UK Government policies are actively holding back or restricting growth
• 70% have delayed, reduced or cancelled investment due to government decisions

Improved international performance
International performance strengthened in Q1, with more than a quarter of businesses reporting growth in overseas sales, up from 17% in the previous quarter, and a further 58% experiencing stable international demand.
Claire Baird, Chief Executive Officer of Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce, said:
This quarter shows signs of stabilisation for Ayrshire businesses, with improving sales and easing price pressures - but costs, particularly taxation, labour and utilities, remain acute.
Firms are adapting, but this is not yet a recovery. Cashflow is fragile, skills shortages persist, and confidence remains constrained.
With the elections concluded, businesses now need clear, practical action to ease costs, unlock investment and skills, and ensure Ayrshire’s voice is heard.
A foundation for future growth
The Q1 2026 Ayrshire QES highlights a picture of an economy that is under pressure, but also of one that is adapting.
Businesses across the region continue to demonstrate resilience, flexibility and ambition. The scale and speed of future growth will depend on easing cost burdens, unlocking further investment opportunities and ensuring that national economic policy better reflects regional priorities.
The Ayrshire QES dataset strengthens Ayrshire’s visibility and influence at both Scottish and UK levels and ensures that the voice of local business shapes policy discussions where it truly matters.
• Q2 QES report published 16th July
• Q3 QES survey runs from 17th August – 11th September

Accelerate success with Ayrshire Chamber’s business mentoring
At Ayrshire Chamber, we believe that the right mentor can make a transformative difference to a business owner’s journey. Our mentoring programme provides entrepreneurs and professionals with the support, insight and encouragement needed to overcome challenges and achieve their goals.
Working with a Connect Me mentor helps bring greater clarity and direction, enabling mentees to focus on what matters most and create practical plans for growth. Through regular conversations, mentors help individuals increase self-awareness, recognise barriers to progress and identify new opportunities.
Mentoring also builds confidence and resilience. With the guidance of someone who has faced similar challenges, mentees are better equipped to make informed decisions, navigate setbacks and take positive action. Improved
communication, stronger networks and access to valuable experience are additional benefits that can have a lasting impact on both personal and professional development.
Perhaps most importantly, the Connect Me programme provides accountability and a supportive space to discuss ideas, concerns and aspirations.
As one of our mentees shared:
“I found speaking with my mentor to be very helpful. Their knowledge and their past experiences, along with their contacts, have really propelled my business along so far, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without my mentor and the Chamber of Commerce mentoring scheme.”
Through Connect Me, mentoring empowers individuals to grow with confidence, purpose and the support needed to achieve meaningful, lasting success.

Hotter weather, higher usage: What this means for your business water costs
For many businesses, summer brings new opportunities. More customers, busier premises and increased activity can all help drive growth. However, it can also bring higher operating costs, particularly when it comes to water usage.
Warmer weather often means increased demand across a range of sectors. Whether its hospitality businesses serving more customers, sports facilities maintaining pitches, manufacturers increasing production or offices welcoming more visitors. While the increase seems unavoidable, understanding how and where water is being used can help businesses stay in control of costs.
One of the simplest ways to stay in control is by submitting regular meter readings to your water retailer, ensuring bills reflect actual usage and providing a clearer picture of consumption trends throughout the year. They also help identify unusual spikes that could indicate leaks, faulty equipment or other issues. Alongside regular monitoring, simple water efficiency measures such as repairing leaks, maintaining water-using equipment and encouraging water-conscious behaviours can help reduce consumption and lower costs.
Understanding your water use isn’t just about managing bills. It also helps businesses build resilience, plan ahead and respond more effectively to changing conditions.
At Castle Water, they’re proud to support businesses across Ayrshire and beyond.
As a local employer and proud member of the Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce, they are committed to helping businesses understand their water services and make informed decisions that support both operational efficiency and long-term sustainability.
This summer, a closer look at your water use could be one of the simplest ways to keep costs under control.

Personal transformation turns into growing community
June marks six years alcohol-free for Gillian, co-founder of Our Circle. A milestone that began with what seemed like a simple decision but ultimately changed the course of her life.
At the time, she was juggling many of the demands familiar to working women today: family responsibilities, work commitments and the constant pressure of trying to be everything to everyone. Like many, a glass of wine at the end of the day felt normal, an easy way to relax, celebrate, cope and connect.
What began as a break from alcohol soon became something much bigger.
“I simply wanted to see what life might look like without alcohol,” says Gillian. “What I couldn’t have known then was how far-reaching that one decision would become.”
Over time, she discovered more energy, greater clarity, deeper confidence and a renewed sense of purpose.
Through her work today, Gillian sees just how much women are carrying behind the scenes. Many are leading businesses, supporting teams, raising families, caring for others and somehow hold everything together.
That experience ultimately inspired Gillian and her business partner, Karen, to cofound Our Circle, supporting women who are questioning their relationship with alcohol and looking for something more from life.
One of the greatest lessons she has learned is that transformation rarely begins with grand plans. More often, it starts with a quiet moment of honesty and the courage to ask, “What if I did something different?”

Reflecting on her own journey, Gillian says: “I’m grateful I asked that question. Not because it led me to stop drinking, but because it led me back to myself. And from there, everything changed.”

Jobs boost at centre of £150m investment
A £150m strategic investment across Cumnock & Doon Valley will prioritise jobs and career opportunities for young people.
The funds, administered and distributed by The 9CC Group, are being provided by windfarm developers through community benefit.
Stephen McCarron, chief operating officer of the 9CCG, said: “We are delighted to be making exciting progress on delivering positive impacts across the former coal mining communities of East Ayrshire.
“Our vision is to create a lasting legacy by building a better place to live, work, play and visit and we have now captured the area’s key demands and needs and look forward to

moving from short term projects to delivering strategic priorities.”
The ambitious details are outlined in the 9CCG’s Strategic Investment Plan Executive Summary and the Building Community Wealth Collaborative Working Report. It follows a highly successful conference Creating a positive legacy for Cumnock & Doon Valley held earlier this year to explore how best to invest the £150m of windfarm community benefit earmarked for the 9CCG area.
In May, the charitable organisation launched a pioneering five-year project to fund
Ayrshire’s oldest law firm celebrates its 150th anniversary

A series of special events during 2026 will mark a century and a half of Lockharts Law.
That history can be traced to a humble room in Ayr’s Wellington Square when John Lockhart began representing the official business of Victorian townsfolk.
Four generations on, Lockharts is still looking after the important matters in peoples’ lives.
Peter Lockhart, now a consulting partner, said the firm was keen to mark such a significant milestone of continued service since 1876.
Peter said: “The times certainly have been changing, and we have always been at the forefront of helping people navigate the legal world.
“When my great grandfather John started all this, he used to reach his candle-lit office by horse and cart. I think that history makes everyone in this family firm proud of the past while we take care of clients’ futures.
“One hundred and fifty years is a real achievement, and we are determined to celebrate this heritage.
Though the firm has invested in digital technology, it has kept a traditional ethos and promotes ‘old fashioned’ values.
Over the decades, the business has grown by taking over rival firms and always hiring the best talent. That was confirmed in 2022 when they were crowned High Street Firm of the Year in the Law Awards of Scotland.
Many of today’s Ayrshire law firms have partners and staff who at one stage in their careers passed through the Lockharts stable. www.lockhartslaw.com

Learning that works for business
When employers invest in developing their people, the results can be felt far beyond the workplace. That has been clearly demonstrated by UWS Graduate Apprentice Katie Wood, whose recent achievement was recognised as part of the Ayrshire Apprenticeship Challenge 2026.
As part of the Challenge, Katie contributed to a project with Joy by Corrine Smith, creating and selling upcycled jewellery to raise funds for Ayrshire Cancer Support. Alongside this, she helped organise a Christmas card design competition, with winning designs produced and sold locally. The project combined creativity, organisation and commercial awareness, while delivering tangible community benefit.
Katie’s achievement reflects the strengths of the Graduate Apprenticeship model: learning
that is embedded in the workplace and applied in real time. By studying alongside full-time employment, GA students translate academic learning directly into workplace activity, building confidence and capability as they progress.
Reflecting on her experience, Katie said: “Being able to apply what I’m learning straight into my role has made a real difference to how I approach projects at work.”
For employers, Graduate Apprenticeships enable staff development that delivers immediate value within the organisation. Employees remain in post, continue to contribute, and grow skills that directly support organisational objectives. At the same time, businesses play an active role in strengthening Ayrshire’s future workforce and local impact.
Many Ayrshire organisations are already seeing the benefits of this approach. For those

A new publication to promote Ayrshire as the world’s best destination for Scotland’s national poet Robert Burns has been launched.
In a collaboration between tourism teams from North, South and East Ayrshire councils, “Ayrshire - Birthplace of Burns” details the Bard’s connection to over a dozen Ayrshire towns and villages, and references more than 30 tributes to Burns including statues, monuments, murals and cairns.

The 40-page brochure also highlights days out, events, arts, products, walks, food, drink and accommodation in Ayrshire - all with a link to Burns.

Adworks celebrates 30 years of creative growth
This year marks a major milestone for Adworks as the Ayrshire based creative agency celebrates 30 years in business. Since launching in 1996, Adworks has grown from a small local agency into one of Scotland’s leading independent marketing and digital agencies, supporting clients across Scotland and beyond.
Over the past three decades, the company has built a reputation for combining creativity with commercial thinking, delivering branding, digital marketing, design, social media and strategic campaigns for organisations across sectors including tourism, leisure, construction, food and drink, healthcare and public services.
While the marketing landscape has
transformed dramatically since the mid 90s, Adworks has continued to evolve alongside it. From traditional print and advertising to today’s digital first world of content, data and AI-driven marketing, the agency has remained focused on helping clients communicate effectively and grow their businesses.
The 30 year anniversary is not only a celebration of longevity, but also of the people and partnerships that have shaped the agency’s journey. Many long-standing client relationships span decades, reflecting Adworks’ commitment to collaboration, trust and delivering measurable results.
Speaking about the milestone, the Adworks MD Daniel Knox said: “Reaching 30 years is a proud moment for everyone connected with Adworks. We’re incredibly grateful to our

clients, partners and staff past and present who have supported us along the way. We’re excited about the future and continuing to help businesses thrive for many years to come.” adworks.scot
