Ayrshire’s strength sparks drive for growth

As we look toward the year ahead, Resilience and Growth feel like the right theme for this edition. Ayrshire’s businesses continue to navigate shifting markets, new technologies and evolving customer expectations, yet what stands out is the determination and ingenuity shown across our membership. This ambition is what sustains our region and drives our shared progress into 2026.

Our Annual Dinner at Trump Turnberry was a powerful reminder of that collective spirit. It was a pleasure to gather with so many of you and to reflect on the achievements, challenges and aspirations that shape our region. We were honoured to welcome Mike Soutar as our keynote speaker - an entrepreneur and media

leader known for founding Shortlist Media and for his role as a trusted adviser on BBC’s The Apprentice. His insights resonated strongly with the moment we find ourselves in.

Mike’s reflections on resilience under pressure, the importance for leaders to have optimism and confidence in uncertain times, offered timely encouragement and practical inspiration. These themes align closely with the opportunities and challenges facing Ayrshire’s businesses today, and his perspective reinforced the belief that our region is ready to meet the future with confidence.

This issue also marks the introduction of our Quarterly Economic Survey (QES) to the region. By capturing real-time data from our members, the QES will strengthen our ability to target support, influence policy and advocate

for Ayrshire’s economic priorities with clarity and confidence.

Thank you for your continued resilience, innovation and commitment to Ayrshire. Together, we can turn shared challenges into shared success.

Supporting local skills and supply chains

A European energy company is continuing to build connections with local suppliers and as it progresses plans for further investment in Ayrshire.

Vattenfall recently became a Platinum Partner with Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce, signalling its commitment to the local economy as it seeks consent for South Kyle II Wind Farm, a proposed 11 wind turbine development in East Ayrshire.

With the potential to generate £9.5million locally and support jobs, South Kyle II Wind Farm will build on Vattenfall’s ‘local approach’ which saw many Ayrshire businesses join its supply chain during the construction of the earlier, adjacent South Kyle Wind Farm.

Simon Lejeune, Lead Project Development Manager at Vattenfall, said:

“If consented, South Kyle II Wind Farm will generate significant opportunities for local suppliers, and so we’re doing the groundwork now to raise awareness and make connections across Ayrshire’s business community. As part of this, we are delighted to become a Platinum Partner with Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce, and look forward

to developing further strategic collaborations. Similarly, Vattenfall is continuing to work with local schools, colleges and careers services to highlight the wide variety of wind farm related careers, and already this year we’ve engaged with hundreds of local young people keen to explore this growing sector.”

A 2025 survey found that 74% of UK SMEs are underinsured

Over the course of a year, organisations may expand services, purchase new equipment, hire staff, relocate premises or adopt new technologies. Regulatory requirements may also shift.

It is important to review your commercial insurance policies annually as they can quickly become outdated, leaving costly gaps or unnecessary overlaps.

• Improved cover accuracy and compliance – Business operations rarely stand still. New contracts, partnerships, digital tools and regulatory updates, such as changes to data protection or health and safety requirements, can all affect insurance needs.

• Cost efficiency and clarity – An insurance review is not solely about increasing protection. It can also reveal duplicated cover, outdated policies or excessive limits that drive up premiums unnecessarily. At the same time, it helps prevent underinsurance, which could lead to reduced claims settlements.

• Greater confidence and risk readiness – When leadership knows appropriate cover is in place, it strengthens stakeholder confidence. Clients, partners and employees benefit from knowing the organisation has taken steps to prepare.

Although every organisation is unique, there are several core areas that deserve attention during an annual review:

• Property and equipment values

• Revenue and turnover – changes can affect business interruption and liability cover limits Employee numbers and payroll – these may influence employers’ liability exposure

• Vehicles and drivers

• Cyber and data protection risks

• Policy exclusions and endorsements

• Contracts, leases or structural changes

Ayrshire Chamber Annual Dinner 2026

Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce hosted its 2026 Annual Dinner on Friday 27th March at the stunning Trump Turnberry Resort.

Supported by Principal Sponsor Dash Claims, together with Event Partners

M&M Theatrical Productions LTD and SCAPE Scotland, the event brought together business leaders and partners from across the region for a night of networking, entertainment and recognition. The evening was hosted by Robbie Duncan, featuring a lively programme that built towards an inspiring keynote address delivered by Mike Soutar.

Known for his work as an entrepreneur, media leader, and one of Lord Sugar’s trusted advisors on The Apprentice, Mike Soutar delivered an inspiring keynote focused on his professional journey, leadership philosophy, and lessons learned across the media, technology, and business transformation sectors.

During his speech Mr Soutar emphasised:

“The importance of strong, values‑driven leadership, particularly in times of change.

“Innovation as a necessity, not an optional extra, for organisations seeking to stay competitive

“The mindset required to succeed in fast‑evolving business environments, drawing on his experience in media, sport, and technology.”

A standout moment of the evening was the announcement of the 2026 Business Excellence Ayrshire Award. This year’s winner, Land Energy Girvan, was recognised for its impressive contribution to Ayrshire’s manufacturing and sustainability sectors.

Finalists The Solutions on Demand Group and Ailsa Reliability Solutions were also highly praised by Business Excellence Chair Steven Smith for their outstanding achievements and commitment to excellence.

The event also supported two local charities Alloway Railway Tunnel and Friends of Dundonald Castle through a charity raffle and an auction featuring a bespoke Scotland National Team kilt experience donated by Kilts 4U. The total amount raised was over £9000.

Rounding off the evening, guests enjoyed entertainment from Now Ayrshire Radio DJ Elliot Boyce, helping to create an upbeat atmosphere that encouraged continued networking well into the night.

Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce CEO, Claire Baird said:

“Ayrshire’s business community continues to demonstrate remarkable resilience, and Mike’s reflections on staying confident and optimistic under pressure truly resonated with the room.

“His insights into leading with purpose during uncertain times offered timely encouragement and practical inspiration. These themes align closely with the opportunities and challenges facing Ayrshire’s businesses today, and his perspective reinforced our belief that this region is ready to meet the future with confidence.”

The evening, at Trump Turnberry, was supported by a number of supporting sponsors, including Adworks, Arran Ice Cream, Now Ayrshire Radio, The Print Room, Renaldo’s, RMC Double Glazing and Trump Turnberry.

AERALIS: Building Scotland’s next generation of aircraft

Aerospace engineering has long identified Scotland as a sophisticated industrial and technological powerhouse. Sustaining that strength depends on programmes that create long-term, stable demand, high-value jobs and a resilient skills pipeline. To deliver on that opportunity, AERALIS is developing a sovereign fast jet training aircraft, designed in the UK and destined to be built in Prestwick for long-term use by the RAF and its global allies around the world.

The AERALIS programme harnesses the best of British design and production excellence to meet the needs of the next generation of fast jet training and support requirements. With final assembly planned to be based at the UK’s premier facility for aerospace and aviation operations at Prestwick Airport, AERALIS will

deliver jets at scale from Ayrshire both to the UK and to international markets thanks to being expressly designed for export customers to adapt the aircraft to meet local defence and industrial requirements.

As the UK considers options to replace its fast jet training capability, aligning that requirement with a British-designed and built aircraft is the singular route that ensures the UK will protect and strengthen sovereign control of its critical fast jet training capability while securing long term, high value industrial capability and resilience, showcased through the AERALIS programme delivering the Red Arrows’ next generation fleet from Scotland.

Ayrshire firm at the heart of vital life-saving push

Irvine-based EssJay Electrical Services is helping to drive the installation of crucial defibrillators.

Rolling out the critical kit is a key part of the team’s work from their base in the South Newmoor Industrial Estate.

It comes as new figures reveal North Ayrshire tops the Scottish charts for access to the life-saving devices.

A total of 723 new defibs were installed between Q1 and Q3 across Scotland last year. The biggest rise has come in North Ayrshirewhere 65 per cent more kits are now available.

With key decisions approaching, backing a British-designed aircraft built and exported from Scotland will generate the nation’s highest value technology export, securing long term, high-value jobs and positioning Scotland once again as a Tier One aerospace nation.

www.aeralis.com

Steve Roberts is the Managing Director of EssJay Electrical Services, who specialise in work ranging from domestic to commercial sectors.

He said: “Our workload is varied but by far the most fulfilling part of the job is to carry out installations such as these.

“The importance of every defibrillator kit is vital and you can see what it means to each community to have that peace of mind.

“We have found ourselves installing everywhere from Ayrshire right up to the very north coast of Scotland and the impact is

always significant.

“You always hope defibrillators are a piece of equipment which will never be required, but the importance of having them to hand cannot be underestimated.

“If they can save even one life by being available to the communities they serve, they have done their job.

“At EssJay Electrical, we pride ourselves on being part of the community and we’re proud to play our part in this way.”

National win for Land Energy

Land Energy, based in South Ayrshire, has been named the winner of the Resilience Award at the 2026 Industry Awards hosted by the Centre for Engineering, Education and Development (CeeD).

The award recognises organisations that demonstrate exceptional ability to strengthen operations, adapt to change and build long term resilience through effective leadership, strategy and continuous improvement.

The company has implemented a structured programme to align people, processes and strategy, building stronger, more resilient operations. Early improvements from targeted initiatives and gap analysis are already delivering measurable benefits, forming the foundation for ongoing organisational growth, strengthening internal systems and ensuring the organisation is well positioned to adapt and

grow in a rapidly changing energy landscape, as well as being more adaptable in the current geopolitically uncertain era.

Reg Stewart, Business Excellence Lead at Land Energy, said:

“We are incredibly proud to receive this award from CeeD. Building resilience is about ensuring the organisation is strong, flexible, and ready for the future.

Our entire team has been working hard to review our processes, identify opportunities for improvement, and align our people and systems around a clear long-term vision. This award reflects commitment across the whole business to continuous improvement and operational excellence.

We would also like to thank all the other nominees and CeeD for an amazing evening.”

People-powered ownership strengthens Booth Welsh

In 2025, Booth Welsh took a defining step in securing its future by transitioning to an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT). This milestone further supports Booth Welsh’s people-centred culture, and the focus on growth, resilience and collective success.

Founded in 1989, Booth Welsh has grown from a small family business into a multidisciplinary engineering company employing over 300 people, supporting clients across the UK and internationally. Over that time, the business has continually adapted to changing industries, technologies and client needs, evolving its capabilities while remaining grounded in its values. This ability to respond and grow through change has been key to its resilience.

Employee Ownership not only secures the long-term future of the business in the hands of those who know it best - its people - but also reinforces Booth Welsh’s commitment to Ayrshire. With around 60% of its workforce based in the region, the model strengthens local job security, encourages shared responsibility, and fosters a deep sense of pride in shaping both the organisation’s direction and its continued presence in Ayrshire.

“Our people have always been at the centre of Booth Welsh’s success. Moving to Employee Ownership not only protects the long-term future of the business but ensures everyone has a shared stake in where we go next. It strengthens our culture, builds resilience, and creates a platform for sustainable growth.”

As Booth Welsh looks ahead to 2026 and beyond, its commitment to Employee Ownership, innovation, and its Ayrshire roots positions the business strongly for continued growth and resilience.

CEO Martin Welsh commented:

Resilience in action: Ayrshire College powering offshore wind growth

In a rapidly evolving energy landscape, resilience is about more than adapting, it is about leading change.

Following a robust due diligence process, the College has signed a Memorandum of Understanding and Franchise Agreement with Energy Innovation, a Norwegian training and research centre. This partnership will establish Ayrshire College as a leading hub for delivering the full suite of Global Wind Organisation (GWO) qualifications, vital for a workforce supporting the transition to renewable energy.

Alistair Rodgers, Director of Enterprise Development said: “At Ayrshire College, resilience means anticipating the skills our economy will need tomorrow and acting decisively today. Through strategic investment, international collaboration, and our partnership with Energy Innovation, we are helping to

build a highly skilled workforce for Scotland’s offshore wind sector and support our net zero ambitions.”

Frank Emil Moen, CEO and Managing Partner at Energy Innovation, said:

“Our partnership with Ayrshire College combines strong vocational education with deep industry alignment and international experience. Together, we will develop high quality training pathways that meet real workforce needs, reflect recognised standards, and help technicians progress confidently from training into operational roles.”

Central to this ambition is the creation of the Scottish Wind Technician Education Centre (SWiTEC), recognised within the Scottish Government’s Offshore Wind Skills Action Plan, and critical to addressing national skills demand.

This growth is supported by £450,000 of Scottish Government funding, with over £300,000 already invested in training delivery and further funding allocated to staff upskilling and capital investment.

Through partnership, investment, and global collaboration, Ayrshire College is enabling sustainable growth and supporting Scotland’s transition to a low-carbon future.

Bowie Park takes shape as a major investment in Ayrshire

When Billy Bowie first outlined plans in late 2022 to invest £1.5 million in a new training ground for Kilmarnock FC, it was seen as a strong statement of intent. Today, that vision has grown into an investment of more than £7 million in a purpose built, not for profit facility, placing community connection at the centre of the club’s future.

Billy’s relationship with the club spans more than two decades, evolving from sponsorship in the late 1990s to majority ownership in 2019. Through Billy Bowie Special Projects (BBSP), this investment reflects a long term commitment to both the club and the wider Ayrshire community.

Located between Kilmarnock and Crookedholm, the site has been carefully

chosen to remain closely connected to the town. Alongside the pitches, improvements include a new access road, digital bus stops and the restoration of the pedestrian river path, helping ensure the benefits extend beyond the facility itself.

With construction progressing well, the first phase is expected to complete by the end of May. This will deliver multiple full size grass pitches, a nine a side pitch and a 250-seat stand. The facility has also been designed with community use in mind, with any income reinvested to support its long-term development.

Once open, Bowie Park will bring together the first team, academy, and women’s teams on one site, creating a shared environment focused on development and opportunity. More than a training ground, it represents a meaningful investment in Ayrshire and a positive step forward for the local community.

Long-term growth plans on the horizon for Ayrshire electrics company

In 2026, Test My Electrics stands as a clear example of resilience and growth in action. Based in Ayrshire, the company has continued to strengthen its position in an industry where standards are rising, costs are increasing, and expectations are higher than ever.

What sets Test My Electrics apart is not just technical competence, but mindset. Over the past year, the business has invested heavily in systems, training, leadership development, and operational improvements. Behind the scenes, processes have been refined, cash flow strengthened, and team performance elevated all with one goal in mind: delivering safer, more compliant electrical work across Ayrshire.

Director Neil Claxton believes resilience is built through intention, not reaction.

“2026 isn’t about surviving - it’s about building properly. We’ve made hard decisions, invested in the right people, and focused on long-term standards rather than short-term wins.”

The company’s growth reflects that philosophy. With a growing team of electricians, apprentices, and office staff, Test My Electrics continues to expand its domestic, landlord, and commercial services while maintaining its strong local identity.

Resilience, for Test My Electrics, means adapting without compromising. Growth means improving without cutting corners. In a sector where price competition is fierce, the company

remains clear on its positioning.

“We will never race to the bottom. We compete on professionalism, compliance, and doing the job properly.”

As 2026 progresses, Test My Electrics continues to demonstrate that steady, strategic growth - rooted in values - builds businesses that last.

www.testmyhouse.co.uk

2026 marks the start of a new, evidence - based approach to understanding Ayrshire’s economy, built directly from the insight of businesses of every size and sector. By grounding our work in robust data rather than anecdote, the Chamber can strengthen Ayrshire’s voice locally, nationally and across the UK.

For the first time, Ayrshire has its own dedicated Quarterly Economic Survey (QES) – a major milestone in how the region’s economic performance is captured and championed. The launch event on 26th February brought together businesses, partners and stakeholders to mark the beginning of a significant new chapter for the region.

Delivered in partnership with the Fraser of Allander Institute, the Ayrshire QES forms part of Scotland’s most respected business survey, providing an independent and timely snapshot of the regional economy. Its findings are monitored by key national policymakers including the UK Treasury, the OBR and the Bank of England, giving Ayrshire greater visibility and influence.

The survey will provide reliable, up-to-date evidence to shape local policy discussions with councils and regional partners, ensuring decisions on skills,

infrastructure, planning and business support reflect the real experiences of Ayrshire businesses.

The QES delivers vital insight into business confidence, investment trends, operational challenges and sector‑specific sentiment. Ayrshire’s results also feed directly into the wider UK QES, ensuring local voices help shape national economic intelligence.

Repeated quarterly, the survey will build a strong evidence base to highlight challenges, attract investment and support strategic decision-making - creating a powerful new platform for Ayrshire’s economic future.

Ayrshire Chamber publishes Q4 2025 Quarterly Economic Survey, highlighting strong regional resilience.

The report revealed that Ayrshire firms are facing sharper tax, inflation and cost pressures than the UK average, while still demonstrating resilience and a strong commitment to productivity and innovation.

Drawing on responses from 115 employers representing over 18,000 jobs, the survey establishes Ayrshire’s first regional economic baseline using the British Chambers of Commerce methodology.

Claire Baird, CEO of Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce, said:

Ayrshire has the ingredients of a high-performing regional economy talent, strong businesses and significant strategic assets. But this survey shows that too many firms are being held back by rising costs and uncertainty rather than competing on opportunity and innovation.

Businesses Prioritising Productivity and Improvement

Many firms are focused on adopting technology, enhancing customer experience, building partnerships and entering new markets. This reflects a business community that is not only navigating pressures but actively seeking ways to strengthen performance and competitiveness.

A Strong Foundation for Future Growth

Rising Costs Tighten the Squeeze

Ayrshire firms report sharper cost pressures than the UK as a whole.

69% cite taxation as a growing concern, and cashflow remains fragile with only 16% of Ayrshire firms reporting improvement

None of these challenges are insurmountable, but businesses need stability and practical action now. Give businesses the right conditions, and they will deliver the growth our region is capable of.

Innovation Highlights Long-Term Confidence

More than half of Ayrshire businesses are adopting digital tools or innovation, with AI, automation, CRM systems and digital platforms among the most commonly cited. Despite financial pressures, 22% increased investment in equipment or technology.

This inaugural Ayrshire QES provides robust evidence for shaping policy, targeting support, and strengthening Ayrshire’s voice across Scotland and the UK. While pressures are real, the finding reveal an adaptable, innovative and ambitious business community committed to succeeding. Read the full press release online at https://bit.ly/QESQ4PressRelease

Going the distance for Ayrshire Cancer Support

This year, John McCulloch is taking on the London Marathon with the support of Armour Home Improvements, who have kindly sponsored him and covered the cost of his place, allowing him to focus on raising money for Ayrshire Cancer Support.

Although John works elsewhere as an accountant, Armour Home Improvements is his family’s business, so it means a great deal to him to be representing the company in this way while supporting a cause that makes a real difference across Ayrshire. Armour is a proud corporate partner of Ayrshire Cancer Support, and with both organisations also being members of Ayrshire Chamber, it felt like

a fitting opportunity to give something back to the local community.

John’s goal is to raise £2,500 for Ayrshire Cancer Support, helping the charity continue to provide practical and emotional support to individuals and families when they need it most. The work Ayrshire Cancer Support carries out across the region has been a major source of motivation throughout his marathon training.

Preparing for the event has been a real challenge, involving early mornings, long runs and plenty of sore legs along the way, but knowing the effort is going towards such an important cause has kept him focused.

John is very grateful for the support he

has received so far from family, friends and the wider business community. Anyone who would like to support the fundraiser can do so by scanning the QR code alongside this article. Every donation is greatly appreciated.

Making Tax Digital: What Ayrshire businesses need to know

If you’re a sole trader or landlord in Ayrshire, now is the time to start paying attention to Making Tax Digital (MTD). From 6 April 2026, the new system begins, and many small business owners and property landlords will need to change how they keep records and report their income to HMRC.

The good news is that moving to digital records can bring real benefits. Many businesses find it reduces admin, saves time and gives a clearer view of income, expenses and cashflow throughout the year.

Who is affected?

From April 2026, MTD for Income Tax will apply to sole traders and landlords with turnover above £50,000, based on income from the 2024–25 tax year. The threshold will reduce over time to £30,000 in April 2027 and £20,000 in April 2028, meaning more people will gradually fall within the rules.

What do you need to know?

The important thing to know is that MTD doesn’t change how much tax you pay. It simply changes how you keep records and report them to HMRC.

Businesses affected will need to:

• Keep digital records of income and expenses

• Use MTD-compatible accounting software

• Send quarterly updates to HMRC

While this may sound like a big change, MTD compatible software will actually make things easier. It connects with HMRC to handle quarterly submissions and can automatically capture transactions and receipts, reducing paperwork and keeping records even more organised.

Perhaps most useful, it gives you a clearer view of how your business is performing during the year, helping you plan ahead so there are no surprises at year end.

The Future of Recruitment: Keeping the human touch in an AI driven world

Debbie Hunter, Director of AllNeeds Recruitment

When I first heard the term ‘AI’, my mind went straight to the Scottish band Altered Images - a misunderstanding that revealed far more about my age than my relationship status with the digital world and suggested that my ability to keep up with technology peaked somewhere around cassette tapes.

For a long time, recruitment discussions have repeatedly raised the same question: Will AI replace recruiters? In reality, today’s most successful hiring outcomes don’t come from technology alone or human intuition alone — they come from combining the strengths of both.

In 2026, recruitment isn’t about choosing between AI and people. It’s about understanding the distinct value that each brings to the process.

What AI Adds to Recruitment

Artificial intelligence has reshaped recruitment by taking on parts of hiring that are time-consuming and repetitive. AI can scan and process CVs in seconds quickly identifying relevant skills and expertise that would take even the most avid reader hours… or days…to review.

For recruiters and organisations, AI removes much of the manual administration that slows hiring down, enabling a smoother, more focused and efficient recruitment process from start to finish.

Why Human Expertise Still Matters

Recruitment has never been just about data. It’s about people - and that’s where human recruiters remain essential. AI can show what’s written on a CV, but recruiters uncover what’s behind it. They read between the lines picking up on professionalism, motivation, personal values, attitude and

ambition in ways algorithms simply can’t! They can ask the questions like why a candidate made certain career choices and assess their suitability within the organisations working environment.

Recruiters also play a critical role as trusted advisors, guiding candidates through the people-focused elements of the processpreparing them for interviews, managing expectations, and guiding both sides through sensitive conversations and negotiations. They provide guidance through important career decisions, combining professional judgement with a personal understanding that technology can’t replace.

AI + People = Modern Recruitment

When AI and humans work together, recruitment becomes both more efficient and informed. Technology supports fairness and objectivity by reducing unconscious bias at the screening stage, while recruiters bring perspective, context and accountability to final hiring decisions.

For employers, this hybrid approach delivers the best of both worlds. AI provides data led analysis and efficiency; recruiters provide professional judgement, experience and accountability for outcomes. Together, they help businesses secure talent efficiently and stay competitive in a rapidly changing hiring market.

Rather than replacing recruiters, AI supports them - streamlining administrative tasks so the focus can stay firmly on people and results.

The

next chapter of Recruitment

Recruitment isn’t being taken over by technology - it’s being improved by it. While technology supports the process behind the scenes, people led judgement remains at the core of hiring decisions.

Picking back up on my unapologetic love for 80’s music, who knew that back in 1983 when Rick Springfield wrote ‘Everybody’s talking to computers, they’re all dancing to a drum machine. I know I’m living on the outside, scared of getting caught between. I’m so cool and calculated alone in a modern world’ that those words would still be so relevant to me all these years later. Because WE ALL NEED THE HUMAN TOUCH! I no longer have Rick’s poster on my bedroom wall... it’s in the garage along with my cassette tapes… www.allneeds.co.uk

Ayrshire Apprenticeship Challenge 2026

The Ayrshire Apprenticeship Challenge 2026 came to an exciting close on Tuesday 3rd March, with the final event held at the Ayr United Hospitality Suite during Scottish Apprenticeship Week. Skills Development Scotland served as the principal sponsor.

This year’s Challenge highlighted the dedication and hard work of apprentices from organisations across Ayrshire. Over several months, participants were tasked with designing and delivering a project that would create a positive impact within their local community.

Six teams took part in the 2026 competition, representing: Joy by Corrine Smith Design, Shire Housing, Aquora, Prestwick Aerosystems, Ayrshire College: Hairdressing, and Collins Aerospace. Apprentices were encouraged to independently identify their project ideas and develop new skills.

This year’s initiatives included:

Aquora – A project aimed at engaging with schools across Ayrshire to highlight the diverse range of engineering careers, delivering interactive sessions and practical challenges.

Joy by Corrine Smith Design – Katie created and sold upcycled jewellery to raise funds for Ayrshire Cancer Support and organised a Christmas card design competition, with winning designs sold locally.

Prestwick Aerosystems – Apprentices completed a sponsored walk up Ben Lomond and used the funds raised to purchase Christmas gifts for The Night Before Christmas campaign, also volunteering to sort and deliver donations across the West of Scotland.

Ayrshire College: Hairdressing – Apprentices carried out a sponsored walk around Dumfries House wearing wigs and tutus, took part in a sponsored silence, and donated their skills for a day at Ayrshire Hospice.

Shire Housing – Keir delivered a housing presentation to senior pupils at Doon Academy, helping equip young people with practical housing knowledge.

Collins Aerospace – Apprentices created a memory wall at Whitley’s Retreat for families grieving the loss of a loved one, fundraising through a Halloween fancy dress run and a charity football match.

Each team submitted a portfolio and presented their outcomes to a panel of judges:

• Claire Tooze, Area Manager, Skills Development Scotland

• Claire Baird, Chief Executive, Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce

• Alistair Rodgers, Director of Enterprise Development, Ayrshire College

The judges were impressed by the quality and variety of the projects, awarding:

• Most Innovative Project - Aquora

• Best Individual PresentationJoy by Corrine Smith Design

• Best Team Presentation - Collins Aerospace

• Best Overall Project - Prestwick Aerosystems

Claire Tooze, Area Manager at Skills Development Scotland, said: “It was fantastic to see the breadth of entries this year. Well done to everyone involved in participating and organising another great event this year. It shines a spotlight on Modern Apprenticeship opportunities across Ayrshire as well as the commitment and passion of all the young people involved”

Ashleigh (Scotland) Limited

Ashleigh (Scotland) Limited recently welcomed pupils from schools across North Ayrshire to its sites in Kilbirnie and Irvine, offering them a valuable opportunity to experience life on a working construction site. The visit formed part of the company’s ongoing commitment to supporting young people as they explore future career paths.

During the placement, pupils took part in a range of practical activities, gaining hands on experience in trades such as joinery and bricklaying while also learning about the wider roles that contribute to a successful construction project. Under the guidance of experienced tradespeople, they were able to try out key skills, observe day to day site operations, and gain a deeper understanding of how different teams work together to deliver a project.

The experience provided a realistic insight into the construction industry, helping pupils see first hand the variety of opportunities available within the sector. By working alongside professionals and taking on practical tasks, the group was also able to build confidence and develop a greater appreciation for the skills involved in construction.

Initiatives such as this play an important role in inspiring the next generation, giving young people the chance to explore potential career pathways while developing practical knowledge in a supportive, real world environment.

Radbury Double Glazing Ltd

“Having Sean in through the Secondary School Work Placement programme was a great opportunity for us to see how best we could induct young people into our business in the future. Alongside providing an opportunity to a pupil with a keen interest in Business Management as a school subject to complement theory with real life experience, it was a great opportunity for us to learn from the experience as well. It is of huge value to us to give back to the community and prepare for a future in which we hope to be able to provide further opportunities to young people.”

Carrick Academy pupils tackle real-world tourism challenge

Pupils from Carrick Academy in Maybole recently gained first-hand insight into local tourism thanks to support from Ayrshire Chamber’s Education Team.

Working alongside their teacher, Kevin Reilly, S3 Travel & Tourism students visited the Alloway Railway Tunnel. During the visit, the class enjoyed a guided tour led by trustee Shelagh McLachlan, who explained the remarkable creative transformation of the tunnel, its community impact and the local history behind the project. By coincidence, pupils also met mural artist Chris Rutterford while he was installing new scenes. He spoke with the class about the artwork and the wider mural project.

Shelagh challenged the students to help promote the tunnel as a visitor attraction.

Pupils were asked to consider how tourism could increase visitor numbers, encourage donations and support the long-term care of the mural, as well as suggest potential tours or events that visitors might pay to attend. After four weeks of research and discussion, students presented their ideas to a judging panel. Suggestions ranged from donation boxes and raffles to posters, a small gift shop and local radio advertising.

The winning entry came from Aiden Murphy and Mason Steele. Their proposal to promote the attraction through local radio and the effort they made to record an advert impressed the judges. As their prize, the boys will have portraits painted into the tunnel’s “Last Train to Butlins” mural scene, securing their place in the artwork and local history.

Beyond the Surface: Inspiring future talent in hair and beauty

Nearly 100 pupils from across Ayrshire gathered on Wednesday 25th February for the annual Beyond the Surface event, organised by Ayrshire College supported by the Chamber Education Team. The event welcomed 98 pupils and 10 teachers from schools across Ayrshire.

Designed to introduce young people to the diverse career opportunities within the hair and beauty industry, the event provided pupils with a hands-on glimpse into the courses available at Ayrshire College.

Throughout the day, pupils participated in two interactive workshops, giving them the chance to experience practical elements of different disciplines. Workshops included Nails,

Hairdressing, Holistic Therapies, Spa, Make Up, Barbering and the YOU Salon. These sessions allowed students to explore the creativity and technical skills involved in each area while gaining insight from professionals.

The programme concluded with an engaging session from GROWBIZ, who spoke to pupils about entrepreneurship and selfemployment. Their presentation highlighted how skills developed in hair and beauty can lead not only to employment but also to running a successful business.

By combining practical learning with career inspiration, Beyond the Surface continues to play an important role in helping young people across Ayrshire discover future pathways within the hair and beauty sector.

Chamber Choices Programme marks successful completion of four cohorts

Chamber Choices was created for young people aged 16–24 with the aim of helping them build confidence, develop skills aligned with local labour market needs, and gain valuable exposure to the world of work..

Across four cohorts, 16 young people successfully completed the programme. Throughout its delivery, the programme was supported by a wide range of businesses and employers, including: Ashleigh Construction, AC Whyte, Barclays Bank, NSPCC, NHS, Dekors, Thistle Credit Union, TACT, SDS, GE Aerospace, Police Scotland, Ayrshire College, Amar Sports, EasyJet, BAM, Emergency One, Billy Bowie Tankers, Ardagh Glass, Killie Communities, Ayrshire Groomers, Woodward, GT Groundcare, Simpsinns, The Clipjoint Salon, The Salvation Army, Turnberry Hotel and Spa, Prestwick Airport, Ailsa Reliability Solutions, and Culzean Consultancy.

These employers supported the programme through worksite visits, mock interviews, and work experience opportunities. These activities provided participants with valuable insight and hands-on experience across a variety of industries - many of which they may not have previously considered.

Cohort Outcomes

Cohort 1 - One participant began college in August after completing Chamber Choices. His career goal was to become a joiner or bricklayer, and he was given the opportunity to complete a week-long work experience placement with Ashleigh Construction. He thoroughly enjoyed the experience, which provided valuable insight into the construction industry and helped confirm his career ambitions.

Cohort 2 - A participant from the second cohort secured an apprenticeship in mechanics, his intended career goal, just a few weeks after finishing the programme.

During Chamber Choices, he completed a week-long work placement with Billy Bowie Tankers, where he gained practical experience working alongside one of their mechanics. This opportunity helped strengthen his understanding of the role and confirmed his interest in pursuing a career in mechanics.

Cohort 3 - One participant gained seasonal employment with Card Factory. Retail had been one of her areas of interest, and although the position was a short term contract, it allowed her to gain valuable skills and experience that will support her in future retail roles. She also completed work experience at Ayrshire Groomers, as she hopes to work with animals in the future. The feedback she received from the employer was very positive and encouraging.

Cohort 4 - The fourth cohort was also very positive, with participants completing week-long placements in aerospace engineering, greenkeeping, hairdressing, and hospitality. One participant who undertook the greenkeeping placement performed particularly well and was recommended for a position at another golf club by the employer, George Taggart.

This programme has empowered young people who are not in education, employment or training to take meaningful steps towards their future careers.

What stage is your business at?

Owner-managed businesses across Ayrshire continue to demonstrate resilience as they navigate an increasingly complex economic environment. Many business owners are balancing the day-to-day demands of running a company with decisions around staffing, managing rising costs and planning their next stage of growth, while seeking clearer visibility over financial performance.

For some businesses, this means investing in people, equipment or new opportunities. Others may be focused on improving profitability, strengthening cashflow or gaining clearer visibility over performance. Many businesses reach a point where growth brings new opportunities but also more complex financial decisions.

Gary Ferguson, Accounts Advisory Partner, and Lorna Logan, Accounts Advisory Director

at Dains Accountants, work closely with owner-managed businesses across Ayrshire and see these challenges first hand.

Gary said:

We see many Ayrshire businesses reaching a point where growth brings real opportunity, but also new financial challenges. The right insight and advice can help business owners move forward with confidence and clarity.”

Lorna said:

“With the pressures of running a business, many owners need structured support to help stabilise finances, improve efficiency and make confident decisions.”

Understanding a business’s financial position can help owners identify the drivers behind performance and make more confident decisions about growth.
