A smarter future for business Every business is looking for ways to work smarter, improve efficiency and make the most of its resources. Whether it’s streamlining processes, embracing new technologies, reducing administrative burdens or helping staff focus on higher-value activities, productivity remains one of the most important drivers of business success. The good news is that businesses don’t have to tackle these challenges alone. Across Ayrshire, Chamber members are already helping one another improve performance through innovative products, specialist expertise and practical support. From digital transformation and automation to AI-powered solutions, training, consultancy and business services, there is a growing ecosystem of local organisations ready to help businesses become more efficient, competitive and resilient. This edition of Your Business shines a spotlight on many of those organisations and the solutions they provide. It showcases how businesses are adopting new ways of working, simplifying processes and embracing technology

to unlock productivity gains. While technology is undoubtedly part of the story, so too are people. Creating productive workplaces means investing in skills, supporting wellbeing and ensuring employees have the tools and environment they need to succeed. Quite a year at Glasgow Prestwick Airport Cargo has taken off, millions of parcels have passed through the airport, Scottish salmon is flying direct to China and major investment has gone into the facilities needed to keep that growth going. Now there is another change - a new CEO. Jules Matteoni took up the reins in July, but he is certainly no new face at Prestwick. Jules has spent almost 30 years at the airport, most recently as Director of Operations. He has also been instrumental in developing the relationships that have helped turn China into

one of Prestwick’s most important and fastestgrowing cargo markets. He takes the top job after a transformational 12 months. New scheduled cargo services have connected Prestwick with China, the airport’s e-commerce operation has handled more than 30 million parcels and Scottish salmon is now regularly flying direct to Chinese markets. In June alone, 75 per cent of Scottish salmon consumed in China flew from Prestwick. And that growth is making a difference beyond the airport fence. Around 300 new jobs have been created, while new international connections are

helping Scottish businesses get products to global customers faster. Prestwick has also invested heavily in cargo facilities and new cool chain capacity, while delivering its seventh consecutive year of profit. Jules is now focused on keeping that momentum going. More cargo. More routes. More investment. More jobs. After almost 30 years at Prestwick, Jules knows what the airport can do. Now he gets to lead where it goes next. www.glasgowprestwick.com

Future-proofing the industry and the planet

10

At Test My Electrics, future-proofing the industry is not just about keeping pace with technology; it is about protecting people, communities and the planet we all share. As the electrical and renewable energy sectors continue to evolve, Test My Electrics believe it is their responsibility to invest in the next generation of skilled tradespeople and to help shape a cleaner, stronger future. That starts with young people. Through their apprenticeship training model, the team are committed to developing apprentices to the highest standards in the industry. They teach technical excellence, safe working practices

and attention to detail, but they also place equal importance on pride, attitude and character. For Test My Electrics, building great tradespeople means building great human beings too: people who take pride not only in their work, but in the way they carry themselves in life. The team are also looking ahead through their focus on renewable energy. By promoting accessible government grants for energysaving and low-carbon improvements, including schemes that help households explore renewable technologies, they are helping more people make informed choices for their homes and businesses. This practical support makes sustainability more

platinum

achievable and encourages customers to invest in long-term solutions. Test My Electrics’ mission is about generations: the apprentices they train, the customers they support, and the natural world they must protect. At Test My Electrics, they are proud to be thinking ahead, raising standards and playing their part in creating an industry that is skilled, responsible and ready for the future. testmyhouse.co.uk

Launch helps bring A Bear Called AH! to life This time last year, author Lorraine Johnston had an idea. Today, that idea is A Bear Called AH!, a beautiful gift book raising much needed funds for Ayrshire Hospice. The story follows Alex, who believes he is too old for a teddy bear. The adults in his life prove otherwise through stories about bears that remain important to them and the memories they hold. Lorraine invited 12 professional artists to illustrate the bears: Lewis Mackenzie, Peter Foyle, Margaret Johnston, Yvonne Taylor, Jacqueline Orr, Vanessa Lawrence, Lynn Howarth, Madhumati Manda, Ewan McClure, Kath Pender, Jan Ferguson and Paul Kennedy. Ann Robin also contributed the closing artwork. Every artist generously gifted their work and copyright to support the Hospice. Richard Longmuir, Creative Director at Launch, donated his time and creative expertise

platinum

to complete the book’s design and layout free of charge. Launch then worked with fellow Ayrshire Chamber member Brown Brothers Printers in Irvine, who brought the book to life in print. The project was celebrated at a launch party at Ayrshire Hospice, where contributors toured the facilities their generosity will help sustain. Every penny raised through book sales goes directly to Ayrshire Hospice, supporting patients and families across Ayrshire and Arran. Copies are available from the Ayrshire Hospice online shop, Gargowan Gifts at the Hospice and selected local retailers, including Bearing Gifts. Launch is incredibly proud of this partnership with Lorraine and Ayrshire Hospice and to have worked alongside Team Bear and Brown Brothers to support such an important local cause. www.launchscotland.com

Arena HR accredited by Qualifications Scotland Arena HR is celebrating a major milestone as Arena HR Academy’s Executive Diploma achieves Qualifications Scotland Level 8 accreditation. At the same time, the business is investing in its next generation, supporting young team members as they take exciting steps in their education and careers. After six years of development, the Executive Diploma in Practical and Reflective Leadership has been accredited by Qualifications Scotland as a Level 8 Award, equivalent in level to an HND. Developed by Founder and Managing Director Laura Rennie, the programme bridges the gap between leadership theory and the realities of managing people in today’s workplace.

But investing in people is not something Arena HR simply encourages other employers to do. One of Arena HR’s Trainee HR Practitioners has recently started her HR degree course at night school, with Arena HR supporting and funding her studies, allowing her to combine academic learning with practical HR experience. Another of Arena HR’s young team members has started her full-time Business and HR course at City of Glasgow College. The investment extends to marketing too. Following a successful summer internship, Arena HR has extended its Marketing Intern’s contract until she completes her final year at university, enabling her to continue developing professional experience alongside her studies.

“These milestones reflect an important principle that runs throughout Arena HR: if businesses want great people, they have to be prepared to invest in them. We are incredibly proud of Rachel and Fiona as they embark on the next steps in their career journeys, and we’re excited to support them as they continue to learn, develop and grow.”

PRODUCTIVITY SPECIAL

Beyond the AI hype: Are finance teams ready for what comes next? Why Scotland’s finance leaders are heading to Hampden this October. AI has dominated business conversations, but for finance leaders, the question is changing. It is becoming less about “What can AI do?” and more about “Are we actually ready to use it?” Beyond the hype, a more significant transformation is taking place. AI is moving from experimentation into everyday finance, supporting forecasting, identifying anomalies, surfacing insights and increasingly taking action across financial processes. But AI cannot fix weak foundations. Fragmented systems, inconsistent data and manual processes do not suddenly become intelligent because an AI tool is introduced. As

adoption accelerates, the quality and connectivity of the systems behind AI will become increasingly important. For finance teams, this raises a bigger question: how do you build a finance function ready for what comes next? With more than two decades of experience helping organisations transform their finance systems, Eureka Solutions has seen first-hand how the priorities of finance teams have evolved. Today, conversations are increasingly focused on connected systems, better data, automation and creating the right foundations for AI. As these questions move higher up the finance agenda, Eureka Solutions and Lightyear are bringing finance leaders from across Scotland together at Hampden Park on 21 October to

explore what AI-ready finance looks like in practice and how businesses can prepare for the next stage of transformation. If you’re a finance professional interested in joining the conversation, visit the website and register your interest. eurekasolutions.co.uk

Ayrshire tech firm helping transform Scotland’s care sector through AI

YOUR BUSINESS | AUTUMN 2026

An Ayrshire technology company is helping transform how Scotland’s residential care and specialist education sector records and improves outcomes for children and young people.

12

Developed by The Solutions on Demand Group in partnership with the University of Strathclyde, Geco Connect is an AI-enabled platform built around Scotland’s GIRFEC framework, SHANARRI wellbeing indicators, and the wider ambitions of The Promise. Already being adopted by organisations across Scotland, the platform is designed to reduce administrative pressure on frontline teams while improving the quality, consistency, and visibility of reporting across care, education, and wellbeing services. Rather than staff recording the same information across multiple disconnected systems,

Geco Connect creates a single operational workflow where information is captured once and reused throughout the organisation. The result is less duplicated paperwork, improved inspection readiness, stronger communication with local authorities, and more time for staff to focus on supporting children and young people. Martin Boyle, Managing Director of The Solutions on Demand Group, said: “Across the sector, incredible professionals are spending far too much time battling fragmented systems and repetitive reporting processes. “Geco Connect was developed to change that.” The platform also provides anonymised trend and outcome data across organisations, helping identify wider sector patterns and supporting future collaboration between providers, local authorities, and government.

Geco Connect recently received national recognition, winning the Innovation and Technology Award at the 2025 ROCCO Awards. The platform was also recognised by HSBC Commercial Banking and FSB, receiving runner-up in the Innovation Award 2026 category. www.girfec.co.uk

Build stronger digital foundations for your business Many businesses across Ayrshire are looking at how artificial intelligence and automation can help them save time, improve productivity and reduce admin. The opportunity is real, but the best results usually come when the basics are already in place. Before introducing new tools, businesses should first look at the processes they rely on every day. Where is time being lost? Which tasks are repeated manually? Where is information being entered twice? In many cases, small improvements to existing systems can make a significant difference before any major investment is required.

Security also needs to be part of the conversation from the start. AI tools, cloud platforms and automation can all improve how a business works, but only if data is handled properly, user access is controlled, backups are reliable and staff understand the risks. ITW4 works with businesses across Ayrshire and beyond to help them make better use of technology in a practical, secure and sustainable way. That may involve improving Microsoft 365, strengthening cyber security, automating routine tasks, reviewing backup processes or helping teams get more from the systems they already use. Technology should make working life easier, not more complicated. For local businesses, the

goal should not simply be to adopt the latest tool, but to build strong digital foundations that support long-term growth, resilience and productivity. itw4.co.uk

Driving productivity: platinum Developing talent For businesses across Ayrshire, improving productivity has never been more important. In a fast-changing economy, organisations must adapt, embrace new technology and ensure their people have the skills and confidence to succeed. At Ayrshire College, they believe productivity starts with people. As the region’s skills and workforce development partner, they work closely with employers to understand their challenges, develop talent and unlock opportunities for growth. The College’s support ranges from apprenticeships and professional development to tailored training and practical innovation support. A major step forward is their newly established Institute of Productivity and Innovation. The Institute will provide a focal point for businesses seeking to improve performance, strengthen workforce capability and turn new ideas into

practical results. By bringing together employer engagement, skills development, digital leadership and innovation, it will make it easier for businesses to access the right support at the right time.

adopting the latest technology. It is about helping businesses understand where change can make the greatest difference and ensuring their people have the skills and confidence to make it work.”

Understanding employer needs is central to this approach. Through their new Skills Pulse Survey, businesses can share real-time insight into skills gaps, workforce pressures and emerging opportunities. That intelligence will inform bespoke Skills Acceleration Plans, bringing employers, the College and regional partners together to identify priority actions and develop responsive solutions.

“Our new Institute of Productivity and Innovation will bring the College and employers together to explore practical solutions, develop workforce skills and turn new ideas into meaningful improvements. The focus will be on helping businesses work smarter, innovate and grow.”

Whether a business wants to build leadership capability, introduce a new service, adopt AI and automation or improve its processes, Ayrshire College can help shape a solution around your ambitions. Sara Rae, Vice Principal at Ayrshire College, said: “Improving productivity is not simply about

Ayrshire’s first smart recruitment intelligence platform - GRW Scout CIPD research found that 41% of employers who recruited in the past year had a new employee resign inside 12 weeks. The cost isn’t just measured in pounds - it’s lost productivity, unhappy customers and damaged team morale. When recruitment goes wrong it’s almost always because it’s unplanned and reactive. Local recruiter and entrepreneur Bruce Hydes, co-founder of GRW Talent Ltd, has spent nearly 30 years at the recruitment coal face. Churn, wasted effort and rework mean almost 60% of what recruiters work on goes unpaid. So he asked what a modern approach to hiring should actually look like? The answer became GRW Scout: a predictive intelligence

platform that reads a vacancy in depth, trends what’s happening in that market, tests remuneration, and scores fill potential. The shortlist it produces weighs the spec against what the market will bear today - salary, skills, who is available, and new hire retention. “As a small recruitment firm, we have to be careful where we spend our time and which vacancies we work,” Bruce explains. “Every hour on a hard or unfillable job comes at the expense of roles with less friction and a quicker return. We built Scout to help ourselves, but it soon became clear, that this is a breakthrough product for anyone to use.” GRW Scout launches ahead of Ayrshire Business Week; both GRW Talent and GRW Scout will be on stand. Members are invited to a free Scout read on any job currently.

Hunterston Data Centre Project Opportunities for Local and Regional Suppliers Maximising the efficient use of renewable energy is at the heart of Scottish-registered company Eneus Energy’s plans to transform Hunterston into a major data centre campus supporting the growth of AI and cloud computing. Combining extensive energy-sector expertise with Hunterston’s access to significant grid infrastructure, renewable energy and established industrial heritage, Eneus is progressing plans for a new campus that could unlock substantial economic opportunities for Ayrshire. Hunterston is one of the few locations in the UK capable of supporting a project of this scale. The construction programme is expected to sustain an average workforce of approximately 800, peaking at around 1,400, and support more than 4,800 personyears of employment. Once operational, 300 to 400 permanent, high-quality on-site roles, spanning electrical and mechanical

engineering, IT, logistics, and security are anticipated. The development is also expected to create significant opportunities for local and regional businesses across the construction supply chain, including engineering, civil works, logistics, accommodation, professional services plus ongoing campus operations. This is a long-term commitment to Ayrshire’s economic future and the opportunity for Chamber members is substantial.

Interested in becoming part of the Hunterston supply chain? Businesses interested in future supplier and contracting opportunities are invited to register their interest by contacting hunterston@eneusenergy.com. Further information about the Hunterston Data Centre Project is available at eneusenergy.com/hunterston.

Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce CEO Claire Baird said: The scale of investment proposed at Hunterston has the potential to create significant opportunities for Ayrshire businesses, particularly within the supply chain and wider support services.

Ayrshire Businesses remain resilient as profitability concerns mount

Skills shortages continue to constrain growth

The latest Quarterly Economic Survey (QES) highlights weakening confidence, rising costs and urgent calls for pro-growth policy support.

Despite economic uncertainty, recruitment demand remains strong, with 64% of businesses attempting to recruit during the quarter. 90% of recruiting businesses reporting difficulties finding suitable candidates.

Nearly half of firms now expect profitability to worsen over the next year, while confidence, demand and investment have all weakened since the start of 2026. The survey, which gathered responses from 111 businesses employing more than 12,000 people across the region, reveals that while firms remain committed to investing in their workforce and supporting growth, many are facing significant pressures from rising costs, skills shortages and weakening demand.

Inflation concerns rise • Labour costs (72%) and utilities (71%) place significant pressure on operating costs • 53% identify fuel costs as a significant pressure Despite these pressures, many businesses are choosing not to pass additional costs directly onto customers. Only 25% expect to increase prices over the next three months.

Domestic and international demand weaken Trading conditions also became more challenging during Q2:

• Domestic sales growth fell from 39% to 23%

CEO comment Claire Baird, Chief Executive at Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce, said: The survey shows businesses have not lost ambition. Firms continue to recruit, invest in people and look for opportunities to grow. “Businesses may still be generating revenue, but rising labour, energy and operating costs are eroding margins and reducing the headroom available for investment and expansion. “If policymakers want businesses to invest, recruit and grow, they must reduce costs, remove barriers and create the confidence that makes those decisions possible.

Businesses Seek Delivery, Not Promises The survey findings suggest businesses are seeking practical interventions that reduce the cost of doing business and create stronger conditions for growth. Businesses are calling for measures that reduce cost pressures, improve access to skills and accelerate investment. Business rates reform, tax incentives, support with energy costs, skills development and improved infrastructure were among the most frequently cited priorities. The Ayrshire QES dataset strengthens Ayrshire’s visibility and influence at both Scottish and UK levels and ensures that the voice of local businesses shapes policy discussions where it truly matters.

Could your business be more productive without asking people to do more? Increasing productivity does not always mean asking teams to work faster or harder. Often, the opportunity lies in removing repetitive tasks and inefficient processes that have gradually become part of everyday working. For many businesses, that might mean invoices being entered manually, receipts chased each month, expenses processed by hand or spreadsheets maintained because systems do not connect. Individually these tasks seem small, but across a team the lost time quickly adds up. Cloud accounting, automation and increasingly AI can help remove some of this unnecessary work. Lorna Logan, Accounts Advisory Director at

platinum

Dains Accountants, believes businesses should start with the problem rather than the technology. Lorna said: “Look at where your team is losing time. Are people re-entering information, manually processing invoices or expenses, or maintaining spreadsheets simply to get the information they need? Those are often the areas where automation and better-connected systems can make an immediate difference.” Dains has seen clients move from manual and spreadsheet-heavy processes to Xero and connected cloud tools, reducing administration while improving visibility over cashflow, profitability and performance.

Better productivity can therefore benefit more than the bottom line. Removing unnecessary administration gives people more time for customers, decision-making and higher-value work. dains.com

LOOKING AFTER YOUR WELLBEING

The hidden cost of the capable person Resilience, boundaries and why your most dependable employees may be carrying too much. Every workplace has one: the person who gets asked because everyone knows they’ll do it. The colleague who fixes problems, takes on the extra task and automatically says, “It’s fine, I’ll sort it.”

Healthy boundaries are an important part of that. Asking which task takes priority when everything is “urgent”, taking proper breaks, recognising when capacity has been reached and not carrying workplace stress home are not signs of weakness. They help make good performance sustainable.

They are often our most valuable people - and potentially the ones quietly carrying too much.

Managers also shape this culture. If the people who cope best are continually rewarded with more to cope with, eventually something gives.

When we talk about workplace resilience, we often focus on helping people cope better with pressure. But perhaps we should also ask: what are we asking them to be resilient to?

Perhaps workplace wellbeing needs a different conversation – one that combines resilience with boundaries, stress regulation, recovery and honest communication.

True resilience isn’t about becoming bulletproof. It is being able to navigate pressure and change without continually sacrificing our wellbeing.

Instead of simply asking “How resilient are our employees?”, organisations could ask: “Are we creating a workplace where people can remain well while doing their best work?”

Because your most capable person may keep saying, “It’s fine, I’ll sort it.” It’s worth making sure they don’t always have to. www.ayrshirehealingcentre.com

Ayrshire’s greatest asset isn’t a product, it is its people

YOUR BUSINESS | AUTUMN 2026

When people think of Ayrshire, they often think of world-famous golf courses, stunning coastlines, quality food and drink, and thriving local businesses. These attractions help put Ayrshire firmly on the map, attracting visitors, investment and opportunities to the region.

22

However, behind every successful tourism business, manufacturer, retailer, professional firm and local producer is something even more valuable: its people. As businesses across Ayrshire continue to grow and evolve, employers are increasingly recognising the importance of supporting the health and wellbeing of their workforce. Long NHS waiting times and employee absence can create significant challenges for businesses of

all sizes, affecting productivity, customer service and growth. Robert Craig, Healthcare Partner at WPA Healthcare Practice plc and Director of Clyde Health Ltd, believes this is becoming an increasingly important conversation for business owners. “Ayrshire has so much to be proud of, but the success of any business ultimately depends on the people behind it. Looking after employees isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s a sensible business decision that can help businesses attract, retain and support great people.” Born and raised in Ayrshire, Robert works with business owners across the region to help them understand the healthcare options available to support their employees and protect their businesses from the impact of ill health.

The team have supported employers to explore how the framework can be applied within their workplace settings. Feedback has highlighted the flexibility of the framework and its value in helping organisations embed wellbeing into everyday practice.

As workplaces continue to evolve, investing in employee wellbeing remains one of the most effective ways to build resilient organisations. The Workplace Health Team looks forward to continuing to support Ayrshire employers in creating workplaces where both people and businesses can flourish.

From elite sports performance to workplace resilience What do elite sports performance and success in the modern workplace have in common? More than you might actually think. Ayrshire health entrepreneur Ian Craig, founder of the Centre for Integrative Sports Nutrition, is about to launch an innovative initiative that bridges several decades of experience and the lessons learned from supporting high-performing athletes into the corporate workplace. The premise is simple. People perform at their best when they have the physical, physiological and mental resources to meet the demands placed upon them. However, nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress management and mental wellbeing can easily become afterthoughts in our busy working lives. Ian’s integrative approach brings these areas together, looking beyond individual

health habits to consider energy, concentration, resilience and sustainable performance at work. Accompanied by his passionate natural chef and health coach wife, Rachel Jesson, and professor of nutrition and healthy ageing, Justin Roberts, Ian is developing a range of engaging workplace wellness experiences. These include motivational lunchtime talks, practical nutrition sessions and focused wellness interventions designed to fit around the realities of working life – rather than adding another stress to the corporate inbox. The aim isn’t to tell employees how to live, but to empower them with useful knowledge and simple strategies that can influence how they feel and perform. For Ayrshire businesses, this offers a fresh perspective on workplace wellbeing: one that connects employee health with resilience, performance and functional healthspan.

The team is now inviting businesses to experience a first-of-its-kind approach to workplace wellness in Ayrshire, grounded in the science of human performance, health and longevity. www.intsportsnutrition.com/corporate Meet us on our stand at Ayrshire Business Week

What you don’t know can cost you Just like your business, we’re part of the 99.3% of small and medium businesses powering Scotland. We believe broking isn’t really about insurance, but more about risk, and making an informed choice about what’s important for you and your business.

Business insurance is a vital part of any business. Often, you only realise you’re not fully covered when it’s too late. Your insurance policy SHOULD provide:

1

Comprehensive Protection: Safeguarding your business assets and income, giving you the ability to “bounce back” after an unexpected occurrence.

2

Liability Coverage: Shielding you from financial losses due to third-party injuries, property damage, or legal disputes arising from business activities.

3

Employee & Operations Support: Covering staff injuries, protecting vehicles and equipment, and ensuring business continuity during disruptions or emergencies.

At Blue Rock we like to do things differently Our specialist team have developed an insurance review process like no other and it’s completely free. The Blue Rock Business Insurance Health Check. There’s no obligation to buy from us, or even to get a quote. If you’re not bowled over by our review process you don’t need to go any further (Yes, we’re that confident!) Let us benchmark your current insurance arrangements against the most vital test – the ability to pay claims. We’ll check your policy conditions for you and tell you where you stand. We’ll advise on areas where you’re over or underinsured.

EVERY BUSINESS that goes through our review at least ends up better informed and, should the report come back all clear, you can enjoy your renewed confidence in your protection. However, the majority of businesses that go through our review are surprised to find some major risks within their current insurance programmes, potentially leaving them uninsured. To find out whether your business insurance arrangements provide an illusion of protection…

WELCOME FROM THE CHAIR I hope you had a wonderful summer basking in the Ayrshire sunshine. I know, it perhaps wasn’t the heatwave they had down south, but at least we’ve got green grass. Autumn is here, and with it the new school term, which always feels like DYW’s real new year. Students are back in classrooms, employers are back round the table, and the exciting work of connecting the two has started again for the DYW Ayrshire team. The theme for this edition is productivity: through AI, better processes, and staff wellbeing. In fact, that’s likely going to be the ongoing theme for all of us for the foreseeable future, not just this edition. The ever-

growing impact of AI brings constant change to the way we all work and do business. Using new technologies to drive efficiencies in our processes is something we are all striving for, but it can also bring with it stresses and strains, and we will only be truly successful if our people, the ones driving that change, are supported properly.

partnerships, providing more hands-on workplace experiences, and more young people leaving education ready for whatever the future of work looks like.

That’s exactly why DYW matters. We’re not just introducing young people to jobs, we’re introducing them to good employers, ones who understand that investing in people is what actually drives productivity, whatever tools sit on top of it.

Finally, I’m extremely proud to say that this September DYW Ayrshire achieved yet another significant milestone with its 200th innovative school project, the Auchenharvie and Greenwood Roofing Project. Make sure you read all about this fantastic venture later in this DYW section.

Our focus therefore remains on building more employer

A DECADE OF IMPACT: HOW DYW INNOVATIVE PROJECTS ARE SHAPING TOMORROW’S WORKFORCE

26

For the past ten years, DYW Ayrshire has been creating innovative opportunities that connect young people with the world of work. Supported by Scottish Government funding, DYW Ayrshire has invested in projects that strengthen links between education and industry, helping young people develop the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to succeed in a changing labour market. Working alongside Ayrshire College and East, North and South Ayrshire Councils, DYW Ayrshire has championed a range of vocational learning opportunities that complement traditional education. These programmes have provided practical experiences, industry insight and valuable

qualifications, enabling young people to explore career pathways and build workplaceready skills. Over the last decade, more than £1 million has been invested in innovative projects across Ayrshire. This funding has supported a diverse range of initiatives, from employerled programmes and sectorspecific training opportunities to inclusive pathways that help engage and support underrepresented groups. Shaped by local needs, these projects have delivered meaningful benefits for learners, employers and communities alike. This report highlights the creativity, collaboration and impact of these investments, showcasing projects that have

transformed opportunities for young people across the region. Together, they demonstrate the power of partnership and innovation in developing a skilled future workforce. As DYW Ayrshire celebrates ten years of funding innovation, this report reflects on a decade of Scan to achievement read report while looking ahead to future opportunities for collaboration and growth.

CELEBRATING 200 INNOVATIVE PROJECTS AND OVER £1 MILLION INVESTED IN AYRSHIRE’S YOUNG PEOPLE There are milestones and then there are moments that truly demonstrate the power of partnership, ambition and belief in young people. On 4th September 2026, DYW Ayrshire proudly celebrated the launch of its 200th Innovative Project, marking a decade of investment in the future workforce of Ayrshire and a significant achievement for everyone involved in the programme. Funded by the Scottish Government, the DYW Ayrshire Innovative Projects Fund has now invested more than £1 million in creating exciting vocational learning opportunities for young people across the region. Since its launch in 2016, the fund has supported 200 innovative projects, helping thousands of young people gain new experiences, qualifications and insights into future careers. The milestone event took place at Auchenharvie Academy in Stevenston, where employers, educators, local authority representatives and partners came together to celebrate the programme’s impact. Guests were welcomed with refreshments before enjoying performances from young people and hearing from speakers who reflected on the fund’s journey and success over the past ten years. A highlight of the morning was the formal launch of the Auchenharvie Academy and

Greenwood Academy, AG Roofing Project, delivered in partnership with KRB Group. The project provides pupils with practical roofing experience while developing valuable employability skills and industry knowledge. It perfectly reflects the aims of the Innovative Projects Fund by bringing learning to life through real-world experiences and strong employer engagement. Following the launch, guests visited Lockhart Campus to see first-hand the range of innovative projects supported through the fund and learn more about the vocational and employability opportunities available to learners with additional support needs. While the event celebrated the 200th project, it also recognised the collective impact of all projects delivered across Ayrshire’s schools and communities. Over the last decade, projects have been developed in sectors including engineering, construction,

childcare, health and wellbeing, creative industries, cyber security and horticulture, helping young people explore careers aligned to Ayrshire’s key growth sectors. The results have been truly inspiring. More than 5,000 qualifications have been achieved through projects funded by the programme, giving young people the opportunity to gain industryrecognised skills, build confidence and develop practical experience valued by employers. As DYW Ayrshire enters its next chapter, the success of 200 Innovative Projects stands as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when education and industry work together. The milestone represents thousands of learner experiences, hundreds of employer partnerships and a shared commitment to ensuring every young person in Ayrshire can develop the skills, confidence and aspirations needed to succeed.

MORE THAN SUPPORT: A.C.E. CREATES MEANINGFUL OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL The DYW team were delighted to support our first funded innovative community project in South Ayrshire which was launched on the last Friday of June. A beautiful day for a beautiful project

Founded by Abbie and Claire McGill, A.C.E is a family-led, Care Inspectorate registered support service providing person-centred care and support across Ayrshire. ACE was created from a passion for improving opportunities for individuals with learning disabilities, autism, ADHD and additional support needs, ensuring they have access to high-quality support that

The name A.C.E stands for Activity, Creativity and Education – the three principles that underpin everything they do.

ACE believes that everyone deserves the opportunity to live a fulfilling, independent and meaningful life within their community.

THE AYRSHIRE APPRENTICESHIP CHALLENGE RETURNS FOR 2026/27

YOUR BUSINESS | AUTUMN 2026

The Ayrshire Apprenticeship Challenge is back for 2026/27, offering employers and apprentices an exciting opportunity to make a lasting difference in local communities while developing valuable workplace skills.

28

Open to organisations with Foundation, Modern or Graduate Apprentices, the challenge encourages apprentices to take ownership of a community-focused project from planning through to delivery. Teams can take on a wide range of projects, from community improvement

initiatives and fundraising activities to awareness campaigns, events, and educational programmes. Apprentices are encouraged to think creatively, identify a local need, and work together to deliver a project that creates real benefits for people and communities across Ayrshire. Taking part allows apprentices to step outside their usual role, build confidence, and gain hands-on experience in planning, leadership, problemsolving, and collaboration. For employers, the challenge provides an opportunity to support personal and professional growth while

demonstrating a commitment to community engagement and social value. We’re delighted to welcome this year’s participating organisations: NATS Prestwick, Shire Housing Association, Prestwick Aerosystems, GE Aerospace, South Ayrshire Council, Storm Aviation, Collins Aerospace, and GSK. This year, we have also introduced a voluntary marketing plan to help celebrate their progress, with social media highlights, apprentice stories, and project updates showcasing the positive impact being made across Ayrshire communities.

SPOTLIGHTING AYRSHIRE’S FUTURE WORKFORCE As part of this work, DYW Ayrshire is also conducting a series of industry surveys this quarter, focusing on the automotive, roofing, hair & beauty and visitor economy sectors. These surveys will help us gain a clearer understanding of current workforce challenges, recruitment trends, skills gaps and future talent needs across each industry. The findings will inform the campaign content, provide valuable local labour market insights and help ensure that engagement activities and support are aligned with the needs of employers and the opportunities available to young people.

DYW Ayrshire is launching an exciting new sector-focused campaign designed to raise awareness of skills shortages across key industries while providing valuable insight into the skills, qualities and attributes employers are looking for in their future workforce. Each campaign will focus on a specific sector and will be promoted through a dedicated e-shot alongside targeted social media activity across DYW Ayrshire’s channels. By bringing together a range of voices and experiences, we aim to create a compelling picture of the opportunities available, and the challenges employers are currently facing. The campaign will feature employer success stories, perspectives from educators, and practical examples of how meaningful engagement between businesses and young people can make a real difference. Most importantly, it will showcase why employers choose to get involved and the positive impact these partnerships have on both businesses and the next generation of talent. As part of the campaign, we are looking to work with local businesses to create short video features that highlight their commitment to supporting young people.

We’ll explore what motivates employers to get involved, the activities and opportunities they provide, and why they believe other organisations should consider playing an active role in developing Ayrshire’s future workforce.

By sharing these stories and gathering direct feedback from employers through our sector surveys, we hope to build a stronger understanding of workforce needs, inspire more businesses to engage with young people, strengthen talent pipelines, and help address the skills challenges facing Ayrshire’s key sectors. If you would like to get involved in this campaign, please contact ephilp@ayrshirechamber.org for further information.

WORK EXPERIENCE

CELEBRATING THE IMPACT OF WORK EXPERIENCE ACROSS AYRSHIRE From Monday 1st to Friday 5th June, DYW Ayrshire proudly ran a week-long social media campaign highlighting the value and importance of work experience for young people and employers across the region. Supported by our host organisation, Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce, the campaign showcased the positive impact that meaningful workplace opportunities can have on future careers and business growth. Throughout the week, DYW Ayrshire shared inspiring work experience success stories from across Ayrshire, demonstrating how placements help young people develop essential skills, gain confidence, and explore potential career pathways. The campaign also highlighted the many benefits for employers, including supporting future talent pipelines, bringing fresh perspectives into the workplace, and strengthening links with local education. As part of the campaign, DYW Ayrshire Marketing Coordinator Ellie Philp visited and filmed with several passionate employers, including J&D Pierce and Radbury Double Glazing, to capture their views on the importance of work experience and the difference it can make.

COULD YOUR BUSINESS OFFER A WORK PLACEMENT?

30

Over the summer, DYW Ayrshire partnered with the Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce Education Team, spending time out and about across Ayrshire engaging with local businesses and encouraging employers to support young people through work placements and career-focused activities. By working closely with employers, we aim to create meaningful opportunities for young people to gain valuable experience, develop essential employability skills, and build a greater understanding of the world of work.

Ayrshire Chamber’s dedicated in-house Work Experience Team works on behalf of North and South Ayrshire Councils to source high-quality work placements for S4 to S6 pupils. Placements can be tailored to suit the needs of individual businesses and may range from a couple of days to a full week, or even a more flexible arrangement such as one afternoon per week over an extended period. These placements provide young people with invaluable hands-on experience while giving employers the opportunity to support the

development of the future workforce, showcase their industry, and benefit from additional support within the workplace.

#NOWRONGPATH: CELEBRATING EVERY JOURNEY TO SUCCESS Launched in 2017, #NoWrongPath is an award-winning social media campaign led by DYW, designed to inspire and reassure young people as they receive their SQA exam results. This year, students across Scotland received their results on Tuesday 4 August 2026, with the campaign running throughout the week. The initiative encourages people from a wide range of backgrounds to share their personal journeys, highlighting how career paths often change and evolve over time. Participants reflected on what they hoped to do when leaving school, what they do today, and the valuable lessons they learned along the way. The DYW Ayrshire team was delighted

to support the campaign again, working alongside colleagues from Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce and a range of local businesses across the region. Their experiences showed that careers can take many unexpected turns, reinforcing the campaign’s message that there is no single path to achieving success.

TAKING FLIGHT: AYRSHIRE PUPILS DISCOVER OPPORTUNITIES IN AEROSPACE It was our pleasure to welcome pupils from five schools across Ayrshire to Collins Aerospace for our recent Aviation Awareness sessions, delivered in partnership with Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) Ayrshire. Working closely with DYW Ayrshire, we were able to bring together education and industry to provide pupils with a unique insight into the world of aerospace and the opportunities available locally. The pupils had the chance to meet our current apprentices, learn more about Collins Aerospace, tour our facility, and take part in a hands on activity where they created their own Inspection Repair Report.

These real world experiences are an important part of helping young people understand the many pathways open to them beyond school. Strong partnerships between employers, schools and organisations like DYW Ayrshire ensure that pupils and teachers have access to meaningful opportunities to explore different careers and make informed choices about their future.

For some pupils, a visit like this may inspire a future career in aerospace; for others, it may help them discover that a particular pathway is “not for me” and that is equally valuable. Our goal is to provide insight, build confidence and help young people across Ayrshire see the opportunities that exist within their own communities. Gillian Fallshaw, Collins Aerospace

The real value of 80 years in Ayrshire This year marks 80 years since McTaggart Construction was founded. For eight decades, the company has been a significant part of Ayrshire’s economic fabric, not just building homes, but building careers, businesses and communities across the region. In the past five years, the company has completed £34 million worth of projects in Ayrshire alone, maintaining considerable investment in local supply chains and contractors. Over the last decade, the wider McTaggart Group, which has grown to include three sister businesses, has recruited more than 500 Ayrshire people, and today it directly employs over 200 people based in the region. McTaggart Construction alone directly supports 28 Ayrshire businesses, most of them SMEs, sustaining hundreds more local jobs through continued partnership and repeat work.

YOUR BUSINESS | AUTUMN 2026

McTaggart Construction has been a people-focused business from day one, evidenced this year in four members of staff celebrating 20 years’ service with the company, all of them Ayrshire residents. Many others across the team have built long careers there, choosing to grow their skills and take on new opportunities within the company.

32

That investment shows in their work. McTaggart Construction’s developments, including those in Ayrshire, have been recognised at national level, including at the Scottish Home Awards, Homes for Scotland Awards and Herald Property Awards. Eighty years on, their regional story sits within a wider one: McTaggart Construction, still headquartered in Ayrshire, now operates across 50% of Scotland’s local authority areas, with 3,000 new affordable homes in its pipeline nationally - proof that investing in Ayrshire and growing across Scotland go hand in hand. mctaggartconstruction.co.uk

Every element of the Chamber’s print is now carbon neutral, delivered through a Carbon Balanced Programme that offsets the environmental impact of each page produced, turning an everyday business function into a genuine green credential.

The upgrade also brings smarter technology. New devices scan documents directly into each staff member’s own SharePoint repository, removing manual filing and keeping information organised and instantly accessible. Print jobs are now fully locked down with secure release, ensuring confidential documents are only ever collected by the intended recipient. And with the entire print estate managed through the cloud, the Chamber enjoys complete oversight, stronger security and real peace of mind. “We’re delighted to support Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce on their journey to smarter, greener print,” said Steve Young Managing Director at Stream Managed Services. “This partnership shows that sustainability and security go hand in

hand, every document is protected, and every page is kind to the planet.” streammanagedservices.co.uk

South Scotland MSP visits Ayrshire manufacturer MSP for Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley, Katie Hagmann, visited the 14-acre Land Energy site just outside Girvan last week for a learning visit and tour of the company’s expansive production facilities and wood storage areas. She met with John Lancaster, Head of Sales and Logistics; Nicola Taylor, Head of Products; Fiona Lancaster, Head of Bulk Sales; and Steven Baillie, Girvan Operations Site Lead, who led her on an informative tour of the site. The visit followed a presentation from senior staff about the history, products and key personnel of the company, as well as the unique economic challenges facing the biomass industry and the wider South Ayrshire region.

Katie Hagmann MSP said: “Land Energy is a business with sustainability at its heart. It has been incredible to hear about the opportunities the company is taking, but also its work in supporting the local community. “Having really good employment opportunities is key to building the local economy, and Land Energy is doing just that. I’d like to thank the team for a fantastic visit to the site.” David Bone, Communications Officer at Land Energy, said: “It was a privilege to have Katie visit the site and to have the opportunity to present our factory, staff and entire production process from the moment the sustainably sourced raw materials arrive at the factory to the moment they leave as one of our premium products.”

Founded in 2006, Land Energy is now the UK’s largest producer of sustainable wood pellets and briquettes, supplying low-carbon, renewable fuel to homes and businesses nationwide. The company also manufactures a range of sustainable products, including cat litter and horse bedding, as well as its innovative fungalbased soil conditioner, Solivita. www.land-energy.com
