This term has seen our whole school focus on literacy take centre stage AGS hosted the Bucks Book Awards in March, with special guest author Tia Fisher, author of 'Crossing the Line'. This book is being read by Year 9 in Personal Development, and they were treated to an informative and engaging talk by Tia on the themes of county lines in the novel and her journey as an author.
March has also been AGS Writing Month - students have been embracing the chance to write freely and creatively, with over 260 students participating and over 900 submissions sent in (at the time of writing this newsletter!) Some highlights (anonymously) are listed below...

Write a story featuring at least five madeup words
"Deep in the Zogwood, where the trees are tall and purple, lived a small creature called a Pipsqueak He spent his days searching for Glimmer-berries, which are the only snacks that taste like sunshine and honey.
One afternoon, he found a giant Wobblestone blocking the path It was a smooth, round rock that shook whenever someone got close. To get past it, the Pipsqueak had to use his Zapper-wand, a tiny stick that shoots out bright blue sparks
With a loud crack, the rock rolled away, and he stepped into a field of Fluff-clouds. These were soft, floating flowers that felt like pillows. He sat down, ate his berries, and watched the sky turn green as the sun went down It was a perfect day in the woods."
What do you do to relax?

"One of my favourite ways to relax is by reading, because it instantly calms my mind and helps me unwind. When I get lost in a good book, everything around me fades away, and I’m able to zone out from any stress or worries I might have Reading gives me a peaceful escape and allows me to recharge, even if just for a little while. It’s my quiet space where I can breathe, reset, and enjoy a moment to myself."
Write a notice for your favourite club that would make someone join.
"Have you ever wondered...Is death to be feared? What makes something right or wrong? What makes you you?
Or just want to present your points so logically and convincing that you can win every debate, and your critiques so sharp, definitions so clear it cannot be easily broken down?
Then RS Club is for YOU.
Here at RS1 we explore famous paradoxes, debate exciting ethical dilemmas and share your ideas in a respectful, open environment. You don't need to be a genius You only need to be curious
When : 13:45-14:15
Where : RS1
Extra : We also get visits from Sam, who is currently working for a PhD in philosophy and has been to the space station!
Come along to see what you will discover! Your mind will thank you "

Year 12 and 13 Geologists visited Little Doward Woods near Rosson-Wye to study Devonian (from 420MyA to 358MyA) sedimentary rocks and complete some mapping They examined 18 sites across eight sedimentary rock types.
One site at Arthur's cave was probably used by humans from about 20,000 years ago. The bones of a range of animals that once lived in the area around the time of the last glacial maximum have been excavated from the caves, including those of woolly mammoth, woolly rhinoceros, lion, bison, hyena, and reindeer. The students used their observations to reconstruct the Paleoenvironments and to create a simplified geological map of the area

STEM this Spring!

This term has been packed with STEM and science activity at AGS, with students from all year groups exploring hands-on experiments, challenges, and real-world applications of their learning. The afterschool STEM Club, running every Monday, has been particularly popular with Year 8 students, who have been putting their engineering skills to the test Highlights included building spaghetti bridges strong enough to hold a 100-gram weight and designing parachutes to carry a raw egg safely from the gym balcony. Some eggs survived the drop, others didn’t, but every attempt offered a chance to learn and experiment.
Science enrichment activities have been just as lively Year 8 students explored the fascinating world of antibubbles, creating droplets of liquid surrounded by gas and discovering first-hand the patience and care needed in scientific investigation. Year 7 celebrated Mars Day with a live event from the European Space Agency, learning about extremophiles and the challenges of colonising Mars Meanwhile, Year 11 students practised microbiology in the lab, successfully isolating colonies of different bacteria and refining their practical skills.

A major highlight of the term was hosting the Bucks Book Awards on 11 March. Students from eight schools joined us at AGS, alongside author Tia Fisher, whose book Not Going To Plan has recently been shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal for Writing. It was a hugely successful day for AGS students: Henry was named winner of the county-wide Y9+ Bad Writing competition, earning praise from Tia for his imaginative opening line, and Umar took first place in the Y9+ Flash Fiction competition for his 150-word story The Last Photo, judged by Buckinghamshire librarians.
A huge thank you to Tia Fisher for joining us and helping make the event so memorable, and to Mrs Pushong and the Library team for organising another brilliant term of events. These activities showcase the creativity, enthusiasm, and dedication of both students and staff, making the library a welcoming, vibrant space for reading, learning, and connection at AGS.

Engineering and innovation have been in full flow at AGS this term, with students achieving excellent success in both competition and club activities At the Rotary Technical Tournament, held at The Grange School, teams competed in the challenging “Pipeline Vehicle” task, designing and building a working device from a limited set of materials. The PTA has had a fantastic term, with a range of events that have brought our school community together and raised valuable funds. The Second Hand Uniform Shop continues to go from strength to strength, proving hugely popular at consultation evenings and after-school sessions Thanks to the generosity of those who have donated uniform and the dedication of our volunteers, the shop has raised significant funds while helping to keep boys looking smart. Keep an eye on Classlist, WhatsApp and parent communications for upcoming dates, and if you would like to get involved, volunteers are always warmly welcome. Alongside this, our Bake Sale, now a firm fixture in the PTA calendar following its introduction after a parent survey, once again brought the school community together through the joy of food Reflecting the wonderfully diverse cultures of our school, the event showcased an incredible array of sweet and savoury treats, from Portuguese rissoles and samosas to Victoria sponges and brownies The students absolutely love it, and we hope to build on its success next year Photo attached – cake baked by Lucas Potts Y9.
The highlight of the term, however, was the brandnew Year 9 Disco and the photos say it all! Born from a simple idea that Year 9 students deserved a memorable event of their own, the evening came together through a collaborative effort between AHS and AGS, a positive parent survey, and the tremendous hard work of organisers Vanessa and Jon On the night, 160 pupils enjoyed entertainment from DJ Dan, a live performance from AGS band The Campus, a photobooth, mocktails, and plenty of snacks, creating an evening that students, parents and teachers alike are still talking about. The feedback has been overwhelmingly glowing, with one parent reporting their son called it "INCREDIBLE" and immediately asked when the next one would be It was a truly special evening, and a wonderful reminder of what our PTA community can achieve when it comes together.
