New ISS global ‘Evolving Workplaces’ study: the office holds the key!

Despite the rise of hybrid work, the physical office remains vital for today’s workforce, serving as a place for social bonds and knowledge sharing.

Despite the rise of hybrid work, the physical office remains vital for today’s workforce, serving as a place for social bonds and knowledge sharing. As a result, the office must act as a catalyst for culture, innovation, and a sense of belonging — especially in light of employers’ persistent focus on employee attraction and retention. These insights come from a new global study of nearly 11,000 employees on workstyles and preferences, conducted by ISS, a leading workplace experience and facility management company. The ISS Evolving Workplaces survey was conducted in January 2025 among nearly 11,000 office workers — representing a cross-section of society - from the UK, the US, Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, India, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Singapore, Spain, and Sweden. While the survey showed that hybrid work has become the norm for most office workers worldwide, with 8 out of 10 working remotely each week, typically 1 to 2 days, 71% of workers still find the physical office important. The top three perceived advantages of working in the office are spending time with colleagues, knowledge sharing and learning from others, and getting out and about. Social interaction with colleagues is also among the key factors driving job motivation. While work-life balance is the top factor, collaboration with colleagues comes in second, along with hybrid work options and recognition and awards. This emphasis on in-person interaction also ties into concerns about the long-term risks of remote work. Despite the preference for hybrid work, 88% of responses highlight potential risks, primarily missing out on networking opportunities — both professionally and socially — limitations in career development, and weaker relationships with managers and colleagues. According to

Carl-Fredrik Bjor, Group Commercial & Revenue Officer at ISS A/S, these findings present both strong potential and evolving expectations that employers need to consider: “The physical office still plays a vital role but is undergoing a significant transformation. With hybrid work as the preferred choice for most employees, the office must foster connectivity, collaboration, and individual wellbeing. There’s no ‘one-size-fits-all’ model — it depends on the company and work-style personas. Ultimately, the office should reinforce the company’s purpose. However, from conversations with our 40,000 customers worldwide, we see that successful companies balance their workspaces to support both group work and socialisation, as well as the need for individual focus time,” he says. Another significant trend is that employees expect more from the office to enhance their workplace experience. When respondents in the survey were asked what would make them work from the office more in the future, the top driver was ‘food experiences’ like breakfast, lunch, snacks, or coffee. Facilities such as a gym, activity areas, and quiet zones were also high on the wish list. “Today’s workforce has high expectations. And while employers cannot always accommodate every request, there is no doubt that they face an increasingly significant task in making the office worth the commute — something many see as a barrier. Once again, it is a matter of understanding what drives motivation and engagement among your own employees. Sometimes, it can be the smaller workplace experiences that enhance people’s wellbeing and sense of belonging. The universal principle is that when people thrive, the business thrives”, says Carl-Fredrik Bjor.

L-Acoustics’ victories against European counterfeiters In a significant achievement for both consumer safety and intellectual property rights, L-Acoustics has successfully won legal judgments against two European counterfeiters of its professional audio equipment. These legal actions underscore the company’s unwavering commitment to ensuring audience safety and protecting the market for legitimate partners. Working through its dedicated Anti-Counterfeiting Task Force, L-Acoustics pursued legal action in both Germany and Norway against companies that were acquiring and renting fake L-Acoustics products, including loudspeakers and electronics. Initial analysis of the seized counterfeit products revealed alarming safety concerns, including metal components only half the required strength of authentic L-Acoustics specifications—resulting in a 48% decrease in safety. In Germany, the court ruled against a rental company utilising counterfeit Kara loudspeakers, rejecting their defence that they were not liable as they were only renting the equipment rather than selling it. The tribunal recognized the products as counterfeit, prohibiting the company from using other fake products. Critically, the court also mandated the disclosure of information regarding the origin of the counterfeit products, enabling L-Acoustics to investigate potential larger distribution networks. “L-Acoustics extends its appreciation to the German court for this significant ruling,” expresses Laurent Ostojski, Senior Legal Counsel at L-Acoustics. “This judgement not only protects our intellectual property but also helps maintain the integrity of the professional audio market.” In Norway, L-Acoustics acted against a local rental company offering counterfeit products at significantly reduced rental prices. The intervention was motivated primarily by serious safety concerns, as the fake speakers and amplifiers were being deployed in confined spaces with high occupancy at “russ bus” end-of-year student celebrations—creating a potentially dangerous situation. When faced with legal proceedings, the counterfeiter admitted wrongdoing, paid damages, and halt-

Our priority will always be protecting the public from substandard products that fail to meet proper safety standards.” All seized counterfeit products are being transported to L-Acoustics headquarters in Marcoussis, France for comprehensive analysis before being properly destroyed and recycled in line with the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility strategy. The eco-organisation eCologic, a member of WEEE in France, handled the entire destruction and recycling process, which was overseen by a bailiff to ensure compliance. “In addition to identifying the rigging dangers of these fake products with half the amount of metal required for our rigorous safety standards, our investigation also revealed that some of the counterfeit amplifiers had already failed before seizure,” explains Ostojski. “This underscores the risk these products pose. By ensuring proper recycling of these materials, we’re removing dangerous products from the market while minimizing environmental impact.” L-Acoustics manufactures all products in Europe under strict quality control and safety standards. Groupe Novelty smashes record for video mapping floor projection Three Groupe Novelty companies mobilised their respective technical expertise to deploy a night-time audiovisual immersive experience for the Parc des Oiseaux with a 17,000 m²projection onto a semi dried out lake. Located 30km North of Lyon (France) as the crow flies, the Parc des Oiseaux welcomes 280,000 visitors every year between April and October, when birds migrate back to this region which boasts over 1,300 ponds. To extend its appeal into the winter months, the largest bird park in Europe has taken on a new technical and artistic challenge with Les Nuits du Parc:an immersive night-time trail which ran from November to March 2025.The idea was to make people discover the park from a new perspective, as park director Emmanuel Visentin explains: “We wanted to bring some winter magic, an experience that would extend the link between the public and the park, without having a negative impact on our environment and its living creatures”. Whilst a majority of birds migrate South in the Winter months, some birds are permanent residents of the park. Involved in this ambitious project from the outset, local technical service provider Novelty AURA, with the help of sister companies Alabama Média and Teamagine, mobilised Groupe Novelty’s technical expertise to design an audiovisual and lighting show tailored to the many challenges presented by the site: complex topography, rigorous climatic conditions and strict respect for local wildlife. Accompanying the visitors along the specially created circuit were more than a hundred spotlights(PAR LED F1, SGM P5 and P6, Martin MAC Aura XIP, Starway ZoomKolor) as well as interactive light objects created by Lyon-based designers Pitaya and Drôme-based lighting designer Tilt, all controlled by DMX512.”From the outset, we structured this project by mobilising project managers specialised in each core business and drawn from the various Groupe Novelty entities. This organisation enabled us to deliver precise and appropriate technical

solutions at every stage of the project”, explains Arnaud Douchet, director of Novelty AURA and the overall technical coordinator for this project. Over forty discreet, IP65 JBL ‘mushroom’ speakers were scattered throughout the park to ensure continuity in the audiovisual experience between the 14 show areas. Video projectors installation was handled by Paul-Louis Blouin, video project manager at Alabama Média, with the help of Kelvin Quintois .“This project was incredibly exciting, because it allowed us to push back the boundaries of outdoor mapping, with various projections onto a wide variety of natural surfaces and the possibility of smashing a world record for the largest surface area ever projected onto the ground,” says Blouin. Created by Les Allumeurs de Rêves, the entire scenography and video content is managed by Modulo Pi servers, with the support of Sowarp for calibration and mapping management. using audiovisual devices adapted to the specificities of the site. At the beginning of their peregrination, spectators were introduced to the main characters, a fish (Juliet) and a bird (Romeo), and their seemingly impossible love story in the animation Encounter in a Cascade: There, a large 18m x 8m blended image on the ground used two 12,000-lumen Panasonic projectors facing each other on 7-metre-high totem poles. Further on, a similar albeit non-overlapping 11m x6.25m projection entitled Impossible Love offered two separate sand projections using two 7,000-lumen Panasonic projectors. The route then led to the Park’s penguin cove and the Fire Under the Ice spectacle, were two Barco27K lumens projectors hosted in a technical cabin finished with natural wood paneling, projecting the ice and fire animations of Les Allumeurs de Rêves onto a 30m x 20m surface area with content on the ground and wooden panels. Completing the scene were PAR LED F1 spotlights and

Chauvet Geyser RGB smoke machines discreetly integrated into the background. Designed by Novelty Toulouse, the modular, stackable wood-clad technical cabins were ideal for discreetly integrating audiovisual equipment, and have become the preferred choice fora large number of outdoor events thanks to their natural appearance and blend in the surrounding landscape. Visitors were then invited to discover the piece de resistance of the show, with three major sequences set around the semi-dried out lake: Love Nest, a monumental projection covering two sides of the Park’s panoramic tower using a couple of 20K lumen projectors rigged on their side; The Bottom of the Lake, a real technical feat featuring eight double stacked Barco 20K lumen video projectors installed at the top of the 30m high observation tower, giving life to an unprecedented 17,000 m²projection area; and finally, The Great Ball, a bird view 30m x 30m projection in the lake using three Barco 27K projectors coupled to a d&b E12 audio system rigged above a stage from which spectators could enjoy the show. Groupe Novelty used the same stage used by artists for the Musicales du Parcmusic festival which takes place every Summer. At the end of the night walk, an interactive area allowed young visitors to interact in real time with fish projected on the ground using three 7,000-lumen Panasonic projectors and an Augmenta tracking system. Gilbert Coudène, founder of Les Allumeurs de Rêves, points out that “the tremendous success of this project was only made possible thanks to the close cooperation between the various creative and technical professions, right from the design phase. We had a very clear roadmap: respect the wildlife, enhance the natural beauty of the park and work within its constraints to offer a truly unique experience.” For the first time, Les Nuits du Parc made it possible to open the site in Winter, turning a traditionally slack period into a tremendous economic opportunity. “We proved that it was possible to bring visitors to the park in winter, without altering its identity or disturbing the peace and quiet of its residents,” enthuses Visentin. In view of its success, a new edition is already being considered. “This project illustrates our ability to design and deploy complex technical systems in constrained natural environments. By combining the specific expertise of Groupe Novelty companies, we were able to guarantee performance, reliability and quality of immersion, all essential conditions for the success of Les Nuits du Parc”, concludes Arnaud Douchet.

Barco trading update 1Q25

8

Barco has announced the results for the 1st quarter ended 31 March 2025. Barco’s overall order intake grew in each of its divisions and rebounded significantly in the EMEA region. Healthcare orders increased 9%, driven by Americas and APAC. Enterprise orders grew by 6%, with ClickShare up significantly, partially offset by slower tender closures in Control Rooms. Entertainment orders were up 3%: Cinema orders in EMEA more than doubled year-over-year, while in the Americas they declined against a high prior year base that included a large Cinema-as-a-service order in 2024. Immersive Experience saw a double-digit increase, reflecting strong demand in EMEA and APAC and a resumption of demand in the rental market. Sales growth was robust across Barco’s divisions, with the highest percentage increases for Healthcare in the Americas and for Enterprise and Entertainment in EMEA. Overall, Healthcare sales grew by 6%, with double-digit growth in Surgical and Modality, fuelled by Nexxis software sales. Enterprise sales also increased by 6%, with Meeting Experience sales up more than 50% year-over-year, mainly driven by EMEA. Control Rooms sales were down due to delays in the project execution by integration partners, which primarily impacted hardware sales. Entertainment sales grew 11%, supported by the execution of a strong Cinema order book in the Americas, and the recent launch of new projectors and a rebound in the rental market for Immersive Experience. Impact was felt from the delay of the launch of the Encore 3 image processing software to mid-year 2025. The recently launched new projectors performed well, with further portfolio extensions expected in 2025. Barco CEO, An Steegen said: “Barco started the year well with solid year-over-year growth in each of our divisions. After a challenging 2024 for EMEA, it was good to see a rebound in both orders and sales in each division of this region. The US trade tariffs announcements have heightened volatility and uncertainty throughout our global markets. We are fully focused on mitigating the margin impact as far as possible and on protecting our competitive position, by leveraging our agile global manufacturing and logistics footprint and our experience gained during the post-covid supply chain disruptions. While the impact on customer demand and investment decisions remains uncertain, our teams are determined to navigate these new circumstances. At the same time, our fundamentals remain intact and our

strategy to further strengthen our global market position with innovation, new product launches and investments in software development is unchanged.” The US tariffs are disrupting global markets and supply chains, reducing visibility and increasing uncertainty. Barco is actively taking steps to protect its margins and its market shares. However, the effect on customer demand and investment decisions remains unpredictable. The first quarter was in line with our expectations. Given that the circumstances are still developing, it is premature to update our guidance at this time. Barco first quarter 2025 highlights • Orders for 1Q25 at 232.0 million euro, a 5% increase vs 1Q24, reflecting solid demand in all divisions, and a notable rebound in EMEA •Order book per 31 March 2025 at 568.6 million euro, growing 1% versus 31 December 2024 and 8% higher than end of March 2024 •1Q25 sales of 211.6 million euro, 8% higher than in 1Q24, with growth in all divisions, fuelled by Healthcare in the Americas and Enterprise and Entertainment in EMEA •Signed two major Cinema frame contracts covering more than 5,000 projectors across regions, for delivery in 2025 through 2030. • In light of the uncertainty associated with the US trade tariffs policy, we continue to assess the situation, and are taking precautionary measures to mitigate the impact

Smart buildings: demand beyond the pandemic! The pandemic drove a host of changes in the adoption of AV and IT solutions. Solutions such as: access control; the management of occupants and facilities; management of IoT functions such as security; HVAC; wayfinding; allocation of facilities and spaces; alarms and signage organisation of collaborative workspaces for both onsite and remote workers quickly escalated from desirable to essential. While issues surrounding the pandemic are no longer paramount, the case in favour of smart buildings has moved on to cost-effectiveness and soft benefits including enhanced innovation, inclusivity and improved work-life balance. The smart building concept that emerged both prior to, then kick-started by the pandemic found a home within the custom install fraternity as much by default as anything else. The technologies associated with smart buildings are equally at home with building management specialist, HVAC and environmental suppliers and even security and access control integrators and many others. The question is (or at least was): “How much of the necessary integration skill set falls within the orbit of an AV integrator”? What is clear, is that AV technologies play an integral part in smart building implementations. Allocation of these technological resources in smart buildings involves the intelligent management and distribution of AV equipment and systems, ensuring that all spaces within the building are appropriately equipped for their specific purposes. This can include everything from conference rooms to communal areas, classrooms, and other collaborative spaces. In the context of smart buildings, AV resource allocation typically relies on integrating AV equipment with building management systems (BMS) or smart building platforms. These systems uti-

20

lise sensors, automated controls and data analytics to optimise the use of resources, improve user experience and enhance operational efficiency. Examples clearly within the AV integrator’s remit include dynamic scheduling and room allocation. Automated room and facility booking systems can integrate AV systems with room scheduling software. Users can reserve meeting spaces that are equipped with the necessary AV resources (projectors, microphones, video conferencing tools, etc.), and the system will ensure these resources are set up and ready at the reserved time. Smart building systems can display real-time availability and resources of each room, allowing users to select rooms based on their AV needs. So how much can an AV integrator contribute to the success of a smart building implementation? Jim

FEATURE

Sebring, CTO of the Utelogy Corporation believes that: “In smart buildings, integration is most valuable when it streamlines operations, enhances the user experience, and centralizes control Functions such as access control, environmental sensing (HVAC, lighting, air quality), room scheduling, occupancy monitoring, and digital signage benefit significantly from data sharing and cross-functional automations. When these systems share data and respond dynamically, the building becomes more intelligent, efficient, and user centric.” Increasing sophistication Snart building tools are becoming increasingly sophisticated. For example, dynamic scheduling solutions utilise AI to predict and schedule AV resources based on historical usage patterns. If a particular meeting room is frequently used for video conferences, the system may

prioritise video equipment allocation and ensure that the necessary tools (like cameras and microphones) are always available. Depending on the anticipated use of a space, it can be configured automatically. Once a space is reserved, the AV system can automatically adjust settings for lighting, temperature, and equipment (such as appropriate screen displays and audio systems) to optimise the environment for the intended activity. It is a truism to say that almost every system shines brighter when it shares data: Take the role of AV in building security, using entry/exit data alongside conference room usage can identify under- or over-utilised spaces, or feed security alerts to digital signage or mobile apps for real-time occupant guidance. For access control and space utilisation, data generated can be used to create live occupancy heat maps, or to inform smarter floor plan designs, or dynamically reassign rooms when cancellations occur, automatically guiding attendees to their new locations. By weaving systems together, organisations gain richer insights, accelerate system responsiveness, and get more out of every square foot of physical space. Integration turns a ragbag of technologies into a cohesive, proactive environment—one that is better equipped to adapt to changing needs in real time. For example, integrating AV with HVAC can reduce energy consumption by dimming lights or adjusting temperature in unoccupied rooms. Spaces can be pre-conditioned before meetings begin for optimal comfort. Last-minute room changes can be pushed directly to hallway displays or users’ mobile devices and use digital kiosks for interactive wayfinding. From a resource management perspective, data fed back from smart building sub systems, can better inform management with space utilisation analytics. For example, sensors within rooms can track usage patterns and determine when AV equipment is actually being used. This helps prevent over-allocation of resources and enables better planning of future AV needs. Building managers can also use data from AV systems to analyse which rooms are frequently under or overused, optimising equipment placement or resource allocation accordingly. An increasingly important consideration today is energy efficiency and cost control.

Cost savings Power management can be optimised with AV equipment (like displays and projectors) programmed to turn off or go into low-power mode when rooms are unoccupied or when specific sessions end. In larger buildings, multiple spaces can be designed to share AV resources. For instance, a central control system could allow a projector or display unit to be shared across multiple rooms based on scheduling, reducing the need for redundant equipment. These efficiencies can be extended way beyond AV solutions installed in specific spaces. AV solutions can be integrated with HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) to adjust room conditions for comfort while conserving en-

21

FEATURE ergy. Much the same can be said for lighting and temperature control. For example, in a meeting room, the lighting can adjust based on the AV content being presented, such as dimming when a presentation is underway. Perhaps less understood is the positive impact of smart building technologies on the user experience of building occupants and visitors. Users can personalize their AV settings (e.g., microphone sensitivity, camera angles, screen configurations) through smart interfaces before entering the room. Touch panels, voice assistants or mobile apps can be used to control AV systems and request resource adjustments in real-time. An important consideration arising out of the pandemic was ‘user adoption’ in the context of AV and UC solutions. AV systems in smart buildings often support seamless integration with remote communication platforms like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or Google Meet, allowing employees or participants from various locations to join meetings effortlessly. Smart building systems can adjust audio and visual quality based on the number of participants in a room, or the current lighting and environmental conditions, to ensure the best possible meeting experience. During the pandemic, issues associated with using unfamiliar technology for sometimes mission-critical tasks brought training and solution reliability to the fore. The problem of ensuring that AV equipment from various manufacturers works seamlessly together within the smart building ecosystem adds a whole new level of problems to the issue. However, by integrating AV systems with IoT (Internet of Things) sensors, building managers can monitor the health of AV equipment and solutions. Predictive maintenance algorithms can alert building managers when a device is likely to fail, enabling proactive repairs before a system breakdown occurs and users experience frustration. Likewise, user training and education enjoyed something of a revival during the pandemic and beyond. Privacy and security concerns have continued to multiply way beyond the pandemic, and smart building technologies have a role to play in keeping building occupants safe, and their work secure. AV systems are integrated with building security, ensuring that only authorized users can access certain resources or sensitive AV equipment. Smart buildings can ensure that AV systems (like video cameras and microphones) respect privacy laws by dictating when and where they can be used, potentially with GDPR or other data-protection rules in mind. In worse case scenarios, building users can be alerted to major security problems. AV resource allocation can include managing public address systems throughout the building. These systems may be used for announcements, emergency communication, or even personalised messaging within different areas of the building. In emergency situations, AV resources such as speakers, screens and emergency lights can be automatically activated or configured to broadcast emergency notifications.

22

The role of the AV integrator Each smart building system—whether it’s AV, HVAC, security, or access control—remains grounded in its own discipline. HVAC specialists understand airflow and zoning intricacies, security vendors handle compliance and threat mitigation, and so on. If anything, AV is best positioned to integrate smart buildings because their devices are already (or should be!) on the network with monitoring platforms, such as Utelogy, to automate and monitor the connected devices. Systems like HVAC and security are typically less open to broader connectivity

FEATURE

and often do need extra integrations to bridge this connectivity gap in a secure manner. As demand grows in the smart building market, the most successful professionals will be those who either upskill into IoT and smart tech or form strategic alliances with experts in adjacent fields to deliver complete, secure, and interoperable solutions.

Measures of success

“The smart building movement didn’t just peak with the pandemic; it found its purpose!” Jim Sebring, CTO Utelogy Corporation.

Many of the technologies combined in smart buildings have former lives in other applications, many of which have obvious and direct measures of success – the benefits of digital signage in retail, for example, can be measured in terms of impact on sales. Whatever the additional ‘soft benefits’ of a smart building implementation might be, Jim Sebring is convinced that: “Tangible ROI is a critical baseline for any smart building initiative. Energy savings from optimized HVAC and lighting schedules, reduced downtime through proactive maintenance, and leaner staffing needs for system support are all clear and measurable indicators of financial return.” But Sebring is equally convinced that the value of ‘soft benefits’ should not be ignored: “The true value of a smart building extends well beyond dollars saved. Human-centric benefits—such as improved air quality, better space utilization, and enhanced user comfort—are just as impactful. These can be measured through sensor data, utilisation analytics, and periodic occupant surveys that capture sentiment around convenience, safety, and satisfaction.” Examples of softer success metrics include personalized wayfinding, dynamic room configurations and environments that adapt in real time to user needs. Inclusivity may take shape through multi-language signage, accessible room layouts, guided navigation for individuals with disabilities, or equitable hybrid meeting experiences for remote participants. Cross-functional collaboration can be a success in itself, where shared data between AV, IT, security and facilities teams drives cost-sharing and smarter planning. Ultimately, the smartest buildings are those that create not just operational efficiency, but emotional resonance—delivering environments where people feel supported, empowered, and inspired. Mixing sensor-driven metrics with periodic surveys captures both hard dollar savings and the human-experience uplift that truly defines a ‘smart’ building. In many ways, demand post-pandemic has only intensified. The pandemic acted as a catalyst, accelerating interest in safety, flexibility and automation. What began as an urgent response to health concerns such as touchless access, real-time occupancy monitoring, improved air quality, has now evolved into a new standard. Today, these features aren’t seen as futuristic perks; they’re foundational expectations. The global pause forced building owners and designers to reconsider how physical spaces could and should adapt. Elements like UV sanitation triggered by occu-

pancy sensors, dynamic HVAC responses to room usage, and hybrid-ready collaboration spaces are now part of standard design conversations, where previously they were just considerations. “That said, the shift hasn’t been without its challenges. Upfront costs, fragmented systems, and the need for multidisciplinary expertise can make adoption complex. But the long-term benefits such as operational efficiency, tenant retention, user well-being, and agility in adapting to hybrid or evolving workforces consistently outweigh the challenges.”

Conclusion Smart building implementations leverage a range of advanced technologies, including automation, AI, sensors and integration with other building systems and AV

24

solutions. This creates a more efficient, user-friendly, and sustainable environment while ensuring that resources are available when and where they are needed. As buildings become smarter, AV systems play an essential role in facilitating collaboration, enhancing productivity, and improving occupant experience. So, will the smart building concept be amenable to your clients, now that the imperative imposed by the pandemic is passed? Sebring believes that the benefits of the philosophy and the associated technologies can be just as significant: “As implementation costs become more approachable and technology becomes more plug-and-play, smart buildings are no longer just a trend, they’re becoming the default. The smart building movement didn’t just peak with the pandemic; it found its purpose!”

PPDS and E Ink celebrate 20 years of partnership PPDS started a series of 20-year anniversary celebrations at Touch Taiwan 2025. Taking part in a number of thought leadership opportunities together with E Ink during the event, PPDS also confirmed its commitment to bringing more colour accurate, larger sized Philips Tableaux ePaper displays for businesses wishing to take advantage of the dual bottom line benefits combining revenue opportunities with energy savings. Touch Taiwan – held at the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Centre in Taipei City – is the largest and most significant annual technology event held in Taiwan, attracting over 300 exhibitors and 30,000 visitors over three days. Joining E Ink for the first time at the event PPDS and E Ink are joined in their ambitions and commitment to delivering high impact, energy conscious solutions to market. The two companies enjoy a unique collaborative relationship dating spanning more than two decades, with E Ink acquiring Philips’ ePaper research and development division 20 years ago. Powering evolution together, in 2023 PPDS became the first global display manufacturer to launch a full size, full colour ePaper signage display with the multi-award-winning Philips Tableaux Series, creating a brand-new category for digital signage within the AV industry and supporting businesses across almost every vertical. Now available in 13”, 25” and 32” size variants, with more to come, Philips Tableaux is widely recognised as the world’s most energy efficient digital signage display, capable of providing vivid 24/7 images while unplugged and entirely power free. world, Philips Tableaux is a popular replacement for businesses seeking to swap out or digitise their paper-based communications (such as retail POS and menu boards), delivering instant sustainability benefits. And the ePaper journey with Philips Professional Displays and its customers is about to get bigger. Speaking to the media at Touch Taiwan PPDS, revealed that the next evolutions of the Philips Tableaux range, will include larger form factors for indoor and outdoor use, are nearing the final stages of testing and are set to be unveiled in the coming months. “We are delighted to join our friends and colleagues at E Ink here in Taiwan, celebrating 20 years of partnership together while teasing our next innovations. We were the first global display manufacturer to recognise the incredible benefits and opportunities – including sustainability – available through ePaper. Unsurprisingly, others are now joining us on the journey, and we are delighted to have pioneered this path for the industry. Continuing our incredible partnership with E Ink, we are in a prestigious position where we will always aim for the next step ahead to be at the forefront of innovation.” Hui Lee, President of E Ink Netherlands office, added: “At E Ink, we are proud to have continued our journey and our great relationship as a technology partner for Philips Professional Displays. Together with PPDS, our companies are based in both Europe and in Taiwan, allowing us to collaborate closely as we advance this incredible ePaper technology. With a growing range – in number and in size – of Philips Tableaux ePaper dis-

plays, together we are advancing our mission to deliver a more sustainable proposition for businesses around the world.” The most common question asked about Philips Tableaux is when it will be available in a bigger size? “ It’s not that simple. We can only move as fast as the technology allows. Not all colour ePaper displays are made equally. Image quality and performance in both indoor and outdoor installations are often crucial to the experience and brand ambitions for our customers. This is particularly true for companies for whom colour accuracy needs to be precise. At Oracle Red Bull Racing, for example, the colour mix for the car liveries can change from race to race, depending on light conditions. Ensuring that consistent look and feel, always. The same is true for environments where ePaper displays may feature alongside other digital displays – inside and outside. That is one of the big reasons why Oracle Red Bull Racing selected Philips Professional Displays as their Team Partner - whether for their huge Philips LED walls or for paper replacement with Philips Tableaux, we make colour accuracy work for that brand experience.” Bart Wouters, International Product Manager at PPDS notes that, at ISE 2025, there were a number of vendors showcasing larger colour ePaper sizes, leading to questions from the media and customers alike. However, Wouters explained that bigger doesn’t always mean better, and that focusing on image quality, colour accuracy, and performance in a range of lighting environments are key to acceptance of the technology by customers across the wider marketplace. He continued: “Unfortunately, some of the larger ePaper displays we are seeing would fall short of the expectations of our customers, especially those seeking displays for indoor use. At PPDS, we don’t compromise on quality, bringing an ePaper signage range that answers on better colours, better performance, better display management – with Philips Wave remote device management via our Android System on Chip – and better power options, including Power over Ethernet. We are working closely with E Ink on this and we aim to continue our ePaper journey at the forefront, with more world-firsts yet to come.” PPDS was the first manufacturer to introduce ePaper signage displays to the market with the launch of the 25” Philips Tableaux model in 2023, but the roots of this technology – and partnership – trace back more than two decades. Philips, with its heritage as a pioneer in display technologies since it introduced its first TV in the 1940s, was also instrumental in shaping the ePaper landscape, with the earliest ePaper research and development initiated by the product managers at Philips in the 1990s. E Ink acquired Philips’ ePaper division in 2005, enabling the company to scale its manufacturing capabilities and drive technological advancements, firmly establishing itself as the world leader in ePaper technology. These developments set the stage for innovations that continue to shape the digital signage and display industries today and were the foundations on which the Philips Tableaux range was developed.

thinking. Up to 15 people can play at once, and the system is tough enough to handle the harshest conditions, including outdoors, at sea and in marine environments where corrosion is a real issue.” Jos Van Der Steen, COO and Co-Founder of CONDUCTR, adds: “Innovation isn’t just about pushing boundaries. It’s about delivering scalable, commercially viable solutions that enhance guest experiences while making operational sense. Glow Court is a major step forward in how interactive technology is integrated into high-traffic outdoor environments. Developing a system that is durable, seamless and intuitive meant rethinking everything from software engineering to hardware resilience. We’ve built a flexible, high-impact solution that transforms underused spaces into valuable guest experiences, proving that innovation and practicality can work hand in hand.”

Eastridge Church in Issaquah, Washington, recently upgraded its main campus with a new Meyer Sound LEOPARD system that meets the high production values and diverse audience demands of its contemporary services. Designed and installed by AV integrator and concert/ corporate sound provider Point Source Inc in collaboration with Meyer Sound, the new upgrade replaces a legacy system that had become a bottleneck for both sonic quality and programming flexibility. “We were struggling with old equipment that was causing disparities in sound quality and volume all around our room,” says Lead Pastor Josh Jamison. “These guys came in and made our needs the focus and priority. They worked alongside of us as a true partner in ministry. Our experience, both in quality of work and quality of product, has been stellar.” stridge Church’s production team oversees full-service audio, video and broadcast support for both in-person and online worship, as well as special events and strategic partnerships with touring artists. Production Director Keefe Bieggar says the old audio system was holding them back - not just in terms of sonic performance, but in consistency and reliability. “Our old system was incredibly harsh and had substantial coverage issues,” says Bieggar. “The issues extended to the low end with a poorly deployed ground sub system. You could stand in one place and get blown away, then move four feet over and not hear any low end whatsoever. Every person in the congregation was getting a different experience.” The new Meyer Sound system at Eastridge Church centres around eight LEOPARD compact linear line array loudspeakers per side, supported by a flown centre cluster of three 2100-LFC low-frequency control elements in an end-fire cardioid configuration for focused, even bass coverage. Additional fill coverage is provided by ULTRA family point source loudspeakers, including ULTRA-X40 and ULTRA-X42 centre and side fills and ULTRA-X20 front fills positioned along the stage lip. The system is managed by a Galileo GALAXY 816 Network Platform.

Eastridge Church in Issaquah, Washington, recently upgraded its main campus with a new Meyer Sound LEOPARD system that meets the high production values and diverse audience demands of its contemporary services.

Point Source Inc. led the installation and system design, in collaboration with Meyer Sound Technical Support Specialist David Vincent and Eastridge’s in-house production team. “LEOPARD was the right size and scale for the room,” explains Curt Hare, Point Source’s owner. “It gave us the right visual impact, the right weight load, and the right coverage and power.” “Now, with LEOPARD and a unique flown 2100-LFC system, it sounds the same in every seat,” Bieggar says. “The response has been incredible. It doesn’t matter where we put the fader - we can run it quiet or loud and it sounds nice and smooth. The comments we keep getting are, ‘I can’t believe how clear everything is but it’s not harsh,’ and ‘It doesn’t hurt anymore.’” Meyer Sound and Point Source worked closely with Eastridge to meet both sonic and budget targets, leveraging the capabilities of the 2100-LFC to reduce system complexity and cost compared to previous designs. “Out of the three bids we received, Meyer Sound actually came in under the other two,” says Bieggar. “I wish every church could have Meyer Sound - it solves so many problems, and it’s shockingly affordable considering it’s a premium product.” With improved coverage and headroom, Eastridge Church is poised to support not only its weekly worship but also additional events

and special programming. “The old system just couldn’t handle touring shows. Acts had to bring in their own rigs on crank stands, which ate up seating and impacted sightlines,” Bieggar explains. “With the new Meyer Sound system, we can handle most of the events that come through without needing to bring in extra gear. It’s a huge win for us. This upgrade isn’t just about being louder or newer,” he adds. “It’s about removing barriers to the message. When the sound system becomes transparent, it stops being a distraction, people can actually engage with what’s happening. And that’s the whole point.”

The Bucharest National Opera House, a cornerstone of Romania’s cultural heritage, recently undertook an audio upgrade project focused on enhancing performances whilst preserving the venue’s historic interiors. Previously, the venue largely relied on rented live sound systems. Oftentimes bulky and not suitable as a permanent solution, these systems risked detracting from the old-world grandeur of the space and potentially distracting audiences. The opera house team collaborated with local distributor and integrator, Senia, to implement a permanent K-array solution, which offers a sleek and unobtrusive design and superior sound quality. “One of the key challenges we faced at the Opera House was balancing the requirements for a high-performance audio system with the need to maintain the original architecture and features of the venue,” reflects Ionut Mavrichi at Senia. “K-array’s slim-profile loudspeakers were carefully selected for their ability to blend seamlessly into the environment.” The main PA system features twelve Kayman KY102X loudspeakers, with six units per side, ensuring even sound distribution throughout the venue. To provide deep, resonant bass without overwhelming the space, four Thunder KS3P I subwoofers were suspended from the ceiling, with four more units available on dollies for flexible positioning based on the performance and event requirements. Audio coverage at the balcony level is achieved with six additional Kayman KY102X loudspeakers, ensuring a consistent listening experience for all audience members. Front-fill is provided by the ultra-flexible Anakonda KAN200+ loudspeakers, which are discreetly mounted to the front of the stage, delivering audio to those sitting closest to the action without interfering with the sight lines. The entire system is powered by Kommander KA208 and KA104 amplifiers, allowing the venue’s technicians to easily control and monitor system performance through the K-Framework 3 software. Custom RAL-coloured finishes were applied to the wall-mounted Kayman loudspeakers, blending them into the opera house’s interior design. The addition of a separate Pinnacle system in the lobby offers a consistent audio solution for smaller-scale events and gatherings. The acoustic calibration of the system was a major part of the project, given the venue’s complex sound dynamics, including multiple balconies and highly reverberant surfaces. “Matteo Fanara and I had the opportunity to visit the site and calibrate the sound system in person,” says Paolo Capponi, Product Support Specialist at K-array. “The calibration process presented several challenges, primarily ensuring a well-balanced sound distribution throughout the entire venue and, secondly, achieving homogeneous low-frequency coverage in the audience area without interfering with the orchestra pit and the stage.” To address these challenges, K-array and Senia’s team opted for a cardioid-suspended subwoofer configuration, which allowed for better control over low-frequency dispersion whilst minimising unwanted low-frequency energy on stage. Through extensive testing, using multiple measurement microphones

34

across the theatre, the team achieved a precise and linear frequency response, ensuring not only an even and well-balanced sound experience for the audience but also a precise calibration for the technical front-ofhouse engineers. This project represents a milestone for Romania’s cultural sector, marking the first major audio upgrade at the Bucharest National Opera House since the 1990s. Through modernising the venue’s AV infrastructure, the installation sets a new benchmark for cultural institutions seeking to integrate advanced technology without compromising their own heritage. “The project is a great example of the power of collaboration,” says Mavrichi. “Beyond its technical achievements, our expertise coupled with the support and hands-on calibration of the K-array team has resulted in a very high-quality system that, I am sure, will inspire other cultural venues across Romania.”

Christie laser projectors redefine cultural tourism experience in Wuhan Over 50 Christie 1DLP laser projectors have redefined the cultural tourism experience in Hubei province with the ‘Ballad of Chu’, an immersive theatrical performance that blends history and technology. As China’s first indoor immersive performance themed around Jingchu culture, this large-scale production sets a new standard for integrating projection technology into heritage-based attractions. Located in Mulan Everbright Town, the home of legendary folk heroine Hua Mulan, ‘Ballad of Chu’ brings to life the rich heritage of Jingchu culture through amazing visual effects and immersive storytelling. The 14,000-square-metre (150,695-squarefeet) venue comprises multiple performance spaces, including the third-floor theatre, the second floor ‘Zhaojun Goes to the Frontier’ performance, and the ‘Battle of Red Cliffs’ projection zone. Jianye Display played a pivotal role in the projection design, installation, and sys-

tems integration, ensuring seamless execution across all three venues: “Mulan Everbright Town has rapidly become a phenomenal night tourism landmark since its opening earlier this year,” said Ke Zhou, regional manager of Hubei district, Jianye Display. “Christie’s 1DLP laser projectors were chosen for their high performance, colour accuracy, and reliability, which are essential for delivering high-impact visuals in immersive environments. This project blends tradition with cutting-edge technology, offering visitors an unforgettable cultural experience.” The expansive third-floor theatre, equipped with 360-degree rotating seats, employs 36 Christie laser projectors to create a breathtaking four-sided immersive stage. On the second floor, the ‘Zhaojun Goes to the Frontier’ performance uses six Captiva DWU500S projectors with customised electric gauze screens to achieve a dreamlike, soft-focus effect. Meanwhile, the ‘Battle of Red Cliffs’ projection zone utilises three Inspire Series DWU860-iS projectors and gauze screens to bring ancient warfare to life with dynamic wall and floor projections. The scale of these installations is equally impressive, with massive projection surfaces such as the 9.6-metre by 6-metre (31.5-feet by 19.7feet) flying screen and the 10.6-metre by 6-metre (34.5feet by 19.7-feet) projection wall featuring 4K13-HS projectors in the third-floor theatre. These elements highlight Christie’s advanced technology in delivering exceptional visual fidelity. Additional projector models used for this enormous spectacle include the DWU1612HS, DWU8902-GS, DWU1100-GS, and DWU760-iS. Zhou noted that the team faced significant challenges during installation, particularly in the third-floor theatre, where precise projection mapping was required. They employed 3D simulation techniques to accurately model light paths at a 1:1 scale, ensuring optimal projector placement. To address environmental factors, weatherproof enclosures and intelligent temperature and humidity monitoring systems were implemented, safeguarding the projectors’ performance in demanding conditions. April Qin, senior sales director for China, Christie, commented: “Christie’s laser projectors bring an unparalleled level of realism and depth to immersive environments in the ‘Ballad of Chu’ theatrical performance. Their ability to deliver rich colours, sharp details, and seamless integration across large-scale installations makes them ideal for cultural tourism projects. We are proud to support Jianye Display in bringing this extraordinary production to life and setting new standards for experiential storytelling.” Since its debut, ‘Ballad of Chu’ has mesmerised audiences, immersing them in a visually stunning, multi-sensory journey through time. Visitors have hailed the production as both groundbreaking and awe-inspiring. Industry experts have also recognised its success, with Yue Chen, head of the Mulan Huaxiang Scenic Area, noting that the project has not only filled a gap in live performances showcasing Jingchu culture, but also set a benchmark for the integration of culture and tourism.

Central to this mission is the Stephenson Building, a state-of-the-art facility designed to support engineering and science disciplines. With its sprawling multi-level atrium, the building offers an open and dynamic space for presentations, collaborative learning and events. However, this architectural marvel came with an audio challenge – ensuring 100% intelligibility across its expansive, reverberant environment. To address this challenge, Newcastle University partnered with CUK Group to implement a bespoke Renkus-Heinz public address (PA) solution. The result has been transformative, enabling clear, impactful sound that enhances every experience within the space. “The atrium is a large, reverberant, open learning space used for multiple events that required intelligibility across the entire area,” explains Mark Bromfield, director of system solutions at CUK. “We instantly thought of Renkus-Heinz for the space, as they have a range of versatile solutions that are perfect for acoustically challenging venues. The advanced beam-steering technology of their loudspeakers made them a perfect fit for the Stephenson Building.” The team at Newcastle University, led by AV manager Colin Fahay, identified four zones within the atrium that required coverage. Three zones were designated as priorities due to their proximity to the presentation areas, while the fourth zone was considered desirable but not essential. “The installed audio solution has exceeded our expectations,” Fahay says. “It provides clear coverage and intelligibility to all four zones, enabling the audio system to be utilized from any presentation position, not just the designated areas initially identified.” To achieve this level of performance, the team began with a detailed acoustic analysis of the space, generating an EASE report in collaboration with Renkus-Heinz. allow fans to hear every play call, announcement, and musical cue with exceptional clarity. Whether it’s the roar of the crowd, the pulse-pounding music, or the announcer’s voice cutting through the excitement, the upgraded system keeps fans engaged and energized throughout the game. “Amplifiers play a crucial role in gain structure and providing the necessary headroom the venue has to have for peak moments,” said Morris. “There has to be a high level of confidence to install any given amp, and LEA gives us that confidence in abundance, making it an easy choice for us in future projects of all sizes.”

Meyer Sound updates the Beverly Theatre The Beverly Theatre in Las Vegas, NV is the first commercial exhibition venue to feature Meyer Sound’s new ASTRYA cinema loudspeakers. Its three new ASTRYA-140 screen channel loudspeakers replace Meyer Sound Acheron loudspeakers, marking a natural evolution in the theatre’s ongoing commitment to high-impact, precision audio. Imagined by The Rogers Foundation and built in 2023, The Beverly Theatre is designed for engaging, cross-disciplinary programming. It hosts

film screenings seven nights a week alongside concerts, author events, and talkbacks, with retractable seating for 146 and open-floor capacity for more than 400. The venue’s audio infrastructure, provided by Meyer Sound, delivers uncompromising sound across all formats, with a cinema system, P.A. system, and Constellation acoustic system at its core. “We have three programming pillars: live, lit, and film,” says Kip Kelly, The Beverly’s founding creative director and chief experience officer. “When we started building this, it was important to us that we’re not a multipurpose space, but a very intentional space for those three things. If somebody comes and enjoys a concert, it should feel like a concert house in every sense of the word. If someone watches a film, it should feel like a true art house. And when we host authors, it should feel like a space for them as well.” The ASTRYA upgrade replaces Acheron 100 screen channel loudspeakers but retains the rest of the original cinema system: six X-800C high-power cinema subwoofers and 14 ULTRA-X20 compact point source loudspeakers as surrounds. The Constellation system takes the room’s acoustic response from a physically deadened cinema environment to music and speech-optimized profiles at the touch of a button. Two ULTRA-X40 compact point source loudspeakers, pole-mounted on two 900-LFC low-frequency control elements, provide

coverage for live events in the theatre and adjoining terrace. It’s a system built for more than just performance—it’s built for storytelling. “We’ve always wanted the space to disappear and let the art come through,” says Kelly. “With film, that means presenting the director’s intent as clearly and accurately as possible. We don’t put a filter over the picture, so why would we do that with the sound? That’s what Meyer Sound has always given us, and this new ASTRYA system pushes that even further.” The Beverly presents a wide range of independent films, many with subtle, dialogue-driven soundtracks; Kelly says ASTRYA has already made an impression. “It hits you right between the eyes,” he says. “Hearing the nuances in someone’s tone of voice, or a low whisper... you don’t know how important those things are until you hear them. It changes the moment.” The upgrade was managed by Technology West Group, with consulting support from Jason Pritchard, who was also part of the venue’s original design team. “We’d already built in the infrastructure for digital signal paths and higher-voltage power, so this was a clean, efficient update,” says Pritchard, noting that the digital path extended from IMB to endpoint. Like Kelly, he emphasized ASTRYA’s articulation and definition. “What really stands out is the clarity, especially in the upper midrange. That’s where dialogue lives, and ASTRYA delivers.” Developed with feedback from top film mixers and sound editors, ASTRYA is Meyer Sound’s most refined cinema loudspeaker to date. With ultra-wide dynamic range, zero distortion, and extreme sonic clarity, ASTRYA ensures every detail from the mix stage is preserved in the audience experience. Meyer Sound plays a central role in every event at The Beverly is supporting the venue’s commitment to delivering stories with clarity and emotional resonance: “We call ourselves a storytelling arena,” Kelly says. “Whether it’s a sold-out concert with 500 people or it’s a small intimate book reading with seven people, a big part of our storytelling is great sound, and Meyer Sound is central to every single one of those experiences.”
