ntegrated Systems Europe 2024 was the most successful edition in its 20-year history. Taking place at the Fira de Barcelona Gran Via venue the show attracted 73,891 unique verified attendees from 162 countries, a record since the show’s inception in Geneva in 2004. This represents an increase of 27% on the 2023 edition. Here is our selection of the show highlights. On Wednesday (31 January) ISE 2024 had 51,617 visitors, the highest number ever in a single day beating the previous record by almost 22%. The total number of registrations reached 95,396 with 172,627 visits across the four days. Attendee numbers for the Friday were at 24,528, a record for the show since it went to a fourday event. Alongside record-breaking occupation in the city’s hotels, bars, and entertainment venues, exhibitors reported unparalleled footfall on booths across the largest-ever ISE show. The exhibition showcased its highest number of exhibitors (1,408) and the largest show floor space (82,000 sqm net). ISE 2024 was a testament to the innovation of the pro-AV and systems integration community. Exhibitors from around the globe presented state-of-the-art solutions, ranging from advanced display technologies and immersive audio systems to smart automation and collaborative communication tools. The diverse array of products and services reflected the industry’s commitment to pushing boundaries and enhancing user experiences. ISE 2024 not only reflects the cutting-edge technologies defining our industry but also serves as a testament to the enduring spirit of creativity and camaraderie. As we celebrate this milestone, alongside our

So the numbers were great, but what about the content of the show? s year was the first opportunity for ISE attendees to consider the emerging technologies of AI and XR realities in the context of the AV / IT mainstream. With diary clashes, ISE 2024 was the first to go head-to-head with the London BETT show. Indeed, the educational component of ISE 2024 was exceptional. The conference sessions, workshops, and keynote presentations from multi-Academy Award-winning director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and leading digital artists Jeroen van der Most and Sofia Crespo were curated to provide valuable insights into emerging trends, market dynamics, and technological breakthroughs. Renowned speakers at the conferences and on the show floor stages shared their expertise on topics such as artificial intelligence in AV, sustainable design, and the future of remote collaboration. Attendees had the opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions and gain actionable knowledge to stay ahead in the rapidly evolving industry. The celebration of ISE’s 20th anniversary added a special touch to the event. Commemorative events, retrospective installations such as the ISE Time Tunnel and Vintage Audio Museum, and acknowledgements of industry pioneers highlighted the incredible journey of ISE. This not only created a sense of nostalgia but also underscored the industry’s resilience and adaptability in the face of technological evolution. With the success of ISE this year, and the prospect of further hall space in 2027, the future of the Barcelona show is assured. Next year ISE will take place in Barcelona from 4 - 7 February 2025.

ISE REVIEW

Emerging technologies: AI Artificial intelligence (AI) was one of the major talking points of ISE 2024, both in the content programme and on the show floor. On a residential level, according to CEDIA, AI is poised to redefine the way we interact with and experience our homes, making them more intelligent, responsive, and personalised. The association anticipates AI-driven smart home systems becoming increasingly adept at understanding user preferences, learning daily routines, and proactively adjusting settings to optimise comfort, energy efficiency, and security. As AI continues to evolve, the smart home sector stands to benefit from increased automation, improved energy management, and a more intuitive and user-friendly experience, ultimately shaping the future of connected living spaces. The impact of AI on the workplace and digital signage was also explored. Maintaining the balance With so many emerging technologies expanding the remit ISE, the organisers of the event ensured that the balance with traditional AV was maintained. An outstanding example of this was Sofia Crespo’s Projection Mapping Event at Casa Batllo - the facade of the iconic Gaude building. Following Refik Anadol’s mappings in 2022 and 2023, Casa Batlle has once again invited a renowned digital artist to transform the building into

a canvas for technology-driven art. The chosen artist, Sofia Crespo, is a pioneer in exploring organic life and its evolution through Artificial Intelligence. Co-founder of Entangled Others Studio, Sofia is best known for her work with neural networks and machine learning, along with her huge interest in biology-inspired technologies. Her work, including Neural Zoo and Artificial Remnants, explores the potential of AI in artistic practice and its ability to reshape our understanding of creativity. Sofia’s creations have been shown across the world, including a month-long takeover of Times Square last May during which digital works were displayed across 96 billboards. She has also been part of the Meta AI Artist in Residence programme, in collaboration with Meta Open Arts, during which she created Critically Extant, a project exploring the limits of available data as a means of engaging with critically endangered species. Sofia explains: “The great challenge has been to convey Gaude’s inspirations in a facade with a lot of personality and intricate details. I wanted to capture how he worked and thought, including the materials, the symbology, and his more spiritual dimension. It has been a fascinating project because it combines art and technology, the cultural legacy of Barcelona, and a creator whose work remains alive and is constantly reinterpreted by artists.” Mike Blackman, Managing Director of Integrated Systems Events, said: “We are excited to be working with Sofia Crespo and Casa Batlle to create what will not only be an incredible spectacle for ISE attendees but also allow us to say a huge thank you to Barcelona for hosting

us each year. Casa Batllo is one of the most recognisable buildings in the world and I can’t wait to see how Sofia uses this unique canvas to create a thought-provoking and unforgettable experience. Sometimes, it can be difficult to explain to people what the amazing AV technology that visitors experience during our show achieves, but these spectacular digital artworks, and the creativity of artists such as Sofia Crespo, truly showcase AV technology in all its beauty. A big thank you goes out to the team at Panasonic who are a huge support for this breath-taking project.” The Catalan Audiovisual Cluster introduced its new Switch report examining the impact of artificial intelligence on AV during a presentation on the ISE Partner Stage. As we journey through 2024, the realms of generative AI and spatial computing are not just evolving, they are converging to redefine our digital interactions and experiences. That’s according to Yanna Zhu, venture architect immersive and emerging technologies specialist, BCG, who explained that last year was pivotal for AI, with innovations like ChatGPT, Midjourney and DALL-E making headlines. “Simultaneously, advances in XR hardware with HTC’s Vive XR Elite, Meta’s Quest 3 and Apple’s highly anticipated introduction of the Vision Pro offer us more capable spatial computing devices which increasingly blend our physical environment with virtual content,” she said. “These recent developments indicate a future where AI and spatial computing are deeply intertwined, in that spatial computing devices are becoming an interface for AI-powered content.” The most exciting aspect of this fusion, Zhu explained, lies in the democratisation of content creation, giving virtually anyone the ability to become a creator, regardless of their technical knowledge. “New tools and devices truly break down the barriers that once reserved innovation for those with specialised skills or technical knowledge. With generative AI, intricate and complex ideas can be transformed into tangible digital creations through intuitive interfaces, making sophisticated design, animation and virtual experiences accessible to a broader audience. Spatial computing devices then allow users to interact with and shape their digital environments in a more natural, three-dimensional and human-centric manner. This democratisation not only fosters a rich diversity of perspectives and ideas but also heralds a new era of inclusive innovation, igniting a global renaissance of digital artistry and invention.” On the show floor, the prevalence of AI within AV applications is clear to see. Examples include Zoom releasing a new generative AI assistant (AI Companion) to its collaboration platform; Crestron’s new 1 Beyond PTZ cameras coming with built-in Visual AI to frame in-room meeting participants; and WolfVision’s Cynap Video bar which combines BYOD wireless presentation technology with a 4K AI camera and beamforming array

microphone. Scott Norder, COO at RGB Spectrum said: “AI is revolutionising the industry in various ways. Our main focus of video processing solutions, it enhance content creation and consumption. AI’s integration into video processing within the AV industry has led to more immersive, efficient, and personalised content creation and consumption while also reducing production costs and expanding accessibility, making it a crucial driver of innovation in the field.” While it’s clear that businesses are moving forward with various applications of AI and that the opportunities appear without limit, it’s just as clear that many questions remain as to the risks, both technical and ethical, that generative automation and machine learning bring, particularly as their capabilities continue to accelerate. LG 2023 annual results LG Electronics Inc. (LG) announced its financial results for the year 2023, disclosing a consolidated revenue of KRW 84.2 trillion and an operating profit of KRW 3.55 trillion. This marks the third consecutive year of achieving record-breaking annual revenue. The operating profit is also solid, approaching levels seen during the prior period of pent-up demand. Despite challenging external factors such as an economic slowdown and reduced demand, LG’s core business of home appliances and the burgeoning vehicle components business have demonstrated remarkable resilience, maintaining continuous growth for eight consecutive years. The combined revenue of these businesses exceeded KRW 40 trillion last year, a substantial increase from KRW 18 trillion in 2015. Over the same period, the proportion of these two businesses in the total revenue has risen from 32.5 percent to 47.8 percent. The performance is attributable to LG’s strategic efforts to enhance its business portfolio. The company successfully expanded its B2B business by identifying market turning points early on and integrated new business models, including subscription services, into existing frameworks. Furthermore, LG’s innovative content and service business model, leveraging its extensive user base of hundreds of millions of products globally, has also contributed to securing robust profitability. Looking ahead, LG is committed to a continual transformation from a mature business-oriented structure to a future growth-oriented one. Midwich year-end trading update Midwich Group has provided a trading update for the year ended 31 December 2023. The Group finished the year well and the Board now expects to report record revenue for 2023 of c.£1.3 billion, representing growth of approximately 7% over the prior year (6% at constant currency), with organic revenue in line with the prior year. Positive product mix resulted in gross margin of c.16.8%, exceeding pre-Covid levels. The Board anticipates reporting adjusted profit before tax of ap-

proximately £50 million, which is in line with market expectations*. The Group delivered strong cash generation in the year, of around 100%, ahead of our long-term expectations of 70-80% of adjusted EBITDA. Adjusted net debt** at 31 December 2023 was c.£90 million (representing approximately 1.3 times adjusted EBITDA). Stephen Fenby, Group Managing Director, commented: “After two years of exceptional revenue growth, the market backdrop throughout 2023 was much more challenging, with demand for our more mainstream AV products impacted significantly in many territories. We responded to this by focusing on our technical product categories, completing a record seven acquisitions in 2023 and ending the year with a strong M&A pipeline. I am delighted to report that the Group delivered the highest revenue, gross margins and adjusted profit before tax in its history and, I believe, we made further market share gains in our biggest regions. Generating a record performance in a tough market takes an exceptional team and I would like to thank each of my colleagues together with our customers and vendor partners for their continued support. Whilst the broader market backdrop remains uncertain, the recent acquisitions have integrated well and continue to trade broadly in line with our expectations. Consequently, the Group remains well positioned to continue to deliver both organic and inorganic growth in 2024 and the longer term.” Midwich will announce its final results for the year ended 31 December 2023 on 19 March 2024.

DIARY & EVENTS

Event report: BETT 2024 With all the furore around the biggest ISE yet, it was unfortunate that many of the usual participants in both BETT and ISE were forced to chose one or the other. Nonetheless, there were a number of announcements at BETT worth reporting. PPDS showcased its latest generation of complete across-campus hardware and software innovations. This year’s special event also includes the official global launch of the brand new 4K, interactive Philips Collaboration displays for Education, together with an official preview of its highly anticipated Philips Genius education software suite – delivering the manufacturer’s most advanced classroom solution to date. PPDS continued to make significant advancements in the education market in 2023, becoming the brand of choice for installations inside an increasing number of educational environments, including some of the world’s most recognised and prestigious universities. Classrooms, lecture theatres, auditoriums, libraries, reception areas, canteens, sports halls/stadiums, hallways, elevators, and student accommodation are among some of the recent examples of areas in which Philips Professional Displays are now prominent. Available in 65”, 75”, and 86” sizes across both model variants, the new Philips Collaboration Series for Education marks a significant step beyond the original Philips E-Line Series, which debuted in 2021, featuring an allnew tailored design, together with the latest advances in educational software delivering unrivalled levels of engagement and inclusivity inside any learning environment. The Philips BDL4152E (advanced) model also comes with Google Enterprise Devices Licensing Agreement (EDLA) certification, providing advanced and official access to the Google Play store, together with Goog-

le’s most popular Google Mobile Services (GMS), such as Google Classroom, Google Search, YouTube, Chrome, Google Drive, among many others, reinforcing intuitive use with familiar tablet/mobile experiences. CTOUCH was also active at unveiling the ‘CTOUCH Green Screen’. The ‘Green Screen’ represents CTOUCH’s vision for the most sustainable touchscreen in the market. It’s the next step towards creating an energy-efficient, future proof interactive touchscreen with the lowest possible carbon footprint throughout its lifecycle. The 'Green Screen' contributes to CTOUCH's sustainable mission to be net zero by 2050. This aim is in line with the Paris Agreement and in compliance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. Green Screen’ pushes the limits of sustainability. A back cover made from recycled plastic instead of steel. This results in a back cover with 71% less weight and 91% less kg CO2 output compared to current CTOUCH touchscreens. A dynamic LED backlight and blackboard application that only uses energy when actively used. This results in 41% less power consumption. A low voltage external power supply. As no voltage conversion is needed, it is possible to connect the screen directly to a solar power feed to get 100% green energy. By turning the power supply into an external component, maintenance and replacement in case of a defect are significantly easier and cost-effective. The next step is to further develop viability of these sustainability features and incorporate them within future CTOUCH product lines. This will directly impact CTOUCH customers doing their part for a sustainable future. A more sustainable touchscreen results in less CO2 impact and allows them to save money on their electricity bill.
